Two people are “extremely lucky” to have survived a freak accident on Saturday night, after the van they were driving hit a cow and then took out a power pole on the Moutere Highway. The Nelson Fire Service was called out around 9pm to assist the Richmond and Appleby crews with the rescue. It is understood a cow escaped from its nearby paddock and was on the road when the van hit it. The male driver of the van was able to get out of the vehicle but a female passenger had to be cut out. Nelson station officer Craig Davies says fire crews used the Jaws of Life and spreaders, and it took more than an hour to free the female passenger. “The power lines were down so they had to wait to be isolated before they could do any work, otherwise you get electrocuted. It was a long, drawn-out extrication.” He says the people in the van were lucky to be alive and, if the

power pole was any closer to either side of the vehicle, then they probably would have lost their lives. “The people were extremely lucky, very rarely do you see a van hit a cow and a power pole and not have any fatalities. It was like it was stapled right through the centre of the van, underneath the van, across the front and over the top.” Both passengers were taken away by ambulance. The female passenger suffered a broken tibia, a split lip and broke some teeth. The cow was killed. Police were at the scene, diverting traffic.

Students take to the skies Rotoiti School quite literally took education to a whole new level last Wednesday when they were treated to a glider flight. Thanks to small community contacts, the school was approached by the Nelson Lakes Gliding Club and offered the chance to experience a flight in a glider. and spent around 10 minutes in the air, sailing over the airstrip and taking in the stunning views. President of the club, Nick White, says the decision to take the kids and their parents for a glide was also down to doing something nice and putting back

into the community, where they as members often spend their time. “There was quite a good line when I started, someone said, ‘the difference between gliding and power planes is when you go on a glider flight you want it to be as exciting as possible, and on a power flight you want it to

“Not really, I don’t come here that often, I come once a week but it doesn’t worry me, plenty of parking.”

“A parking area for dog owners, just a little bit of shade. If you’ve got people travelling around or they’ve taken their dog for a walk and they want to stop somewhere, a little bit of shade would be great.”

The school’s motto of ‘courageous learners’ was definitely well chosen and the school hopes the experience

can be repeated when their junior students reach senior age. “It was amazing,” says Felix Harper “I did a 180 degree turn; he was on the rudder because my legs can’t reach the pedals. I’m quite keen on aviation and I would quite like to be a pilot when I grow up.” The club has around 30 members with four club-owned gliders and around 10 privately-owned ones. Local equestrian riders gained some valuable tutoring over the weekend, thanks to the coaching of experienced rider, Lisa Cubitt. Lisa’s husband Sean has made regular trips down from the North Island to coach Nelson riders, but last weekend, for the first time, Lisa was doing the instructing and riders were thrilled to be learning from the Lady Rider of the year; a sought-after showjumping award at the Horse of the Year Show. A weekend of training with Lisa or Sean is organised through the local riders, who must help out with the pair’s travel costs and sort out the timetable for how the clinic will run. Nelson doesn’t have a large equestrian community and the opportunity to work with highly experienced coaches is a rare opportunity that riders greatly

prove her riding. “We had quite a big accident in November when he flipped over, so he’s just coming back into work now and we’re just working on confidence with him over the jumps again,” Zoe says. “It’s really helpful for local riders because we don’t have a lot of local trainers, especially showjumping trainers, and it’s really helpful for us on the off season to get some training in and fix up any problems we’ve got before the show season starts again.” Last weekend’s clinic saw around ten riders make the most of their chance to learn from Lisa; sometimes coming from as far as Blenheim to take part. Lisa and Sean run Team Cubitt Sporthorses Ltd and both have stand-out careers in the equestrian world nationally and internationally.

Car parking building one option for Richmond

A multiple storey car parking building, leasing car parks to businesses and reduced time limits outside ATMs are some of the options being considered in a review of Richmond’s car parking strategy. The Tasman District Council has been collecting information on parking trends in Richmond to develop the strategy that will be made available for public consultation later this year. Although some of the changes to Richmond’s parking are likely to be made to coincide with the Queen St redevelopment due to start next year, council is also looking at long term requirements. “We have a number of parking restrictions that are inefficient in turnover and so the management of our parking resources needs to be better,” council transportation manager Gary Clark says. “We do have people who park all day in some of our spaces which is not very good use of space and there are some all-day parking in some areas which is unusual for a retail area. “The challenge, for us, is that

Work begins on Saxton Field velodrome

Simon Bloomberg

Construction has started on Nelson’s new velodrome and the Saxton Velodrome Trust is expecting more good news with a charitable trust “close” to announcing a significant contribution to the $1.6million project. Contractors Downer started initial earthworks on the site adjacent to Garin College while Ching Contracting are putting in drains. Trust member Rob Ford says they are delighted the construction has finally started and will be even happier when they receive their latest grant. “We are in negotiations with a lot of funders, so we can’t say much,” Rob says. “But we wouldn’t have started construction if we didn’t have considerable funding and that is close to being announced.” The project is a joint-venture between Nelson City Council,

Tasman District Council and the trust, with the trust expected to contribute $300,000. The trust’s marketing manager Paul Jennings says they have already received funding from the Mainland Trust and he is optimistic they can reach their target. “Mainland Trust has supplied funding and are keen to continue their support.” Paul says. “We are also looking at further grants, as well as in-kind contributors and fundraising.” The trust has also set up a givea-little page on its website saxtonvelodrome.com Rob says the velodrome is expected to take another 16 to 20 months to complete and he can’t wait to get on his bike and ride around the 300m track. The long build time is needed to allow the material, used to shape the banked track, to settle and compact before it is surfaced. Although the velodrome will be used for competitive cycling,

Saxton Velodrome Trust members Rob Ford, left, and Paul Jennings, stand on the site where the new cycle track is being constructed, next to Garin College on Main Rd Stoke. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Paul says it is being designed to accommodate a wide range of users. The velodrome will be a community facility that will be suitable for cyclists of all ages, skills and fitness levels.

Pauls says the centre of the velodrome is designed for road safety training needs and will provide a safe environment for children to learn how to ride a bike, for elderly people to stay fit,

and for rehabilitation after injury or illness. Sport Tasman will also utilise both the velodrome and cycle safety arena in its programmes - the velodrome will be free to use.

Government staff threatened Police were called to three separate threat incidents on Thursday against government staff at WINZ, ACC and the Nelson City Council, and they’ve had enough. Police are warning that such threats could carry serious consequences with a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.

In the first incident, a 51 year old man threatened a staff member at the Nelson WINZ office. He was arrested for using threatening language and later released with a pre-charge warning. In the second incident, a 26 year old man threatened a staff member at Nelson City Council. He was arrested for behaving

threateningly and also released with a precharge warning. In the third incident, a 46 year old man threatened a staff member at the Nelson ACC office. He was arrested and charged with threatening to kill and appeared in the Nelson District Court last week. Senior Sergeant Shane Miles says any threats against staff at any organisation

were taken very seriously. “Anyone who is employed to do a job should not expect to be subject to any sort of threat in the course of their work. “People need to be aware that what they say in the heat of the moment, whether their intention is to carry out the threat or not, will be acted on.

Delight as Jetstar plans Nelson flights Andrew Board

Jetstar’s proposed expansion to Nelson has been met with joy from the region’s air travellers. Last week Jetstar announced that Nelson is one of seven regional centres it is looking to expand to before the end of this year. Many air travellers expect the competition with Air New Zealand will mean cheaper prices. The story was first reported in Nelson by nelsonlive.co.nz, and was met with excitement and relief by many, especially online. The story attracted huge interest on Nelson Weekly’s Facebook page and on a page called “Jetstar into Nelson”, which

has been campaigning for the move for several years. The administrator of the page, Martin Daly, a local church pastor, says it now has 3000 likes, up from around 1200 a week ago. “This region certainly needs competition, I’ve been disgusted at the prices so this is going to be better for the region. From business to tourism and for families.” Even Nelson-based TradeMe founder Sam Morgan expressed his delight in a Tweet to followers. “I just flew to Wellington and back for $500 on @FlyAirNZ. Be great to get @jetstar_nz to Nelson.” In another tweet he wrote: “Only takes 25 minutes to fly Nelson to Wellington, $10

nelson L ve nelson L ve

per minute. Silly prices. So short-sighted screw the regions.” Jetstar announced plans to start flying to regional destinations after they bought a fleet of five 50-seat Bombardier Q300 turbo-prop aeroplanes. The services are expected to operate to at least four regional destinations initially, with some of those under consideration being Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson and Invercargill. They will fly to Jetstar’s existing destinations in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown. Regional fares will go on sale in September

with first flights taking off in December. Waimea Weekly has long-reported stories of woe regarding Air New Zealand’s service to Nelson and those stories still hold the paper’s record for the most amount of reader feedback. Dissatisfaction of high prices and poor service were common. Jetstar Group CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka, says they want to bring “real competition” and stimulate regional passenger growth. “When we first started operations in New Zealand, domestic fares across the country dropped by around 40 per cent, and we expect fares will drop considerably on the regional routes where we’ll operate.”

HEADLINERS Snow dump great news for Rainbow: A new snow pump and snow gun, along with a good few weeks of snowfall, are all signs for the start to the ski season at Rainbow. Staff at the ski field have been prepping opening day on July 4 and say it’s looking in fantastic condition and much better than usual for this time of year. Beatty St fire: A fire that started in a King Salmon-owned storage facility on Wednesday afternoon was lucky not to have spread to an adjacent building. Three fire engines, a fire rescue truck and a HAZMAT vehicle, attended the Beatty St blaze just off Bolt Rd. Senior station officer Brian O’Donnell says, due to the nature of the building and the fact it is attached to another building under a different lease, extra fire appliances were called in to help. “We transmitted a second alarm which gives us four pumps instead of the normal two.” Students brave mid-winter swim: Pupils from Tahunanui School braved the cold last Friday as they took part in their annual Midwinter Swim. The swim is an annual event for the school and sees its senior students jump in the sea at Tahunanui beach. For school principal Barbara Bowen, it was her first midwinter swim as she only joined the school in April this year. “The beach is a big part of the community so it seems natural that we come down here each year.” She says the water was warmer than she expected and they couldn’t have asked for a better day. Most of the school’s senior students took part, as did teachers, other staff and some parents. To watch a video of this story, visit www.nelson live.co.nz

School of Music to raise $1.4M for upgrades The Nelson School of Music restoration and rebuild is gaining momentum, with a public fundraising campaign set to launch this week. The heritage building has been closed for over a year because of earthquake risk. The School of Music Trust is now in the process of fundraising to strengthen, refurbish and reopen the auditorium and build a new multiuse facility, complete with rehearsal and teaching rooms. The Rainey House site in Collingwood St is also set for a major revamp. With the plans drawn up, major funders in place, the community is now being asked to help reach a fundraising target of $1.4m out of the total project cost of $6.4m. Fundraising committee chair Colleen Marshall said she is confident there would be plenty of support for the project, given the School of Music’s role at the heart of Nelson’s musical life, and its national reputation. “We have already had some local businesses coming forward to help. There is so much goodwill out there.” Construction work is expected to start before the end of year and the buildings will reopen in late 2016.

Fixing Cable Bay Rd earns contracting award Donaldson Civil won the Hirepool Supreme Award at the Civil Contractors New Zealand Nelson Marlborough Branch awards held in Nelson on Friday for completing a challenging $3.1million repair of the flood-damaged Cable Bay Rd. The Stoke-based company took out the top award after earlier winning the Hynds Award for Projects Valued Over $1.5million. It received the awards for completing the contact to remediate Cable Bay Rd after it was extensively damaged by slips in the December 2011 flood, ahead of time and under budget. “It was a good project for us,” Donaldson Contracting’s co-owner Gary Donaldson says. “But it was also really challenging because we had to work in a very confined area on multiple worksites that were all different. “All the sites were on the down slopes from the road and some of the slips were too steep to walk on before construction. But we were lucky we had a very good crew on the job and good subcontractors - it was a 20-month contract but we finished it in 14 months and under budget.” Co-owner Ken Nell says they purchased a 13 tonne excavator with a special drilling accessory for the contract because the 29 work sites along the narrow, winding road were too confined for their 20 tonne excavator and a conventional drilling rig. They constructed 22 retaining walls, upgraded six culverts, drilled 438 holes up to 750mm

Shoppers win trip to Hanmer Springs

NSR Challenge Cup II, Tuesday, June 9: Tony Cook, organiser of the NSR Challenge Cup II, which took place over the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June, described the event as “bloody brilliant”. Fifty plus racers from Auckland to Dunedin and a number of locals competed in the slot car event, which featured 37 races and was hosted by organiser Tony at his home in Hope. Tony says it was a very successful weekend with a few new members joining up and heaps of support from spectators. This is the second year the races have been held and Tony says it will remain an annual event.

It’s the perfect time of year to be enjoying hot pools, which is exactly what Janice Reynolds plans on doing. There were 600 entries in total but it was Janice’s decision to shop Belinda DeClercq with Richmond Mall winners Janice and Bruce in Wild South that earned Reynolds. Nelson Young Professionals, Tuesday, June 9: Nelson Young Professionals have had an “absolutely fantastic response” after their article in Nelson Weekly on finding new committee members. Current committee member Wes Malcolm says the phones and emails were going hot and, in total, Nelson Young Professionals have gained a further 10 members; four or five of those looking set to join the committee. Nomin-eat, Tuesday, June 9: The group behind Nomin-eat says their cause has received a great response from the public since its article in Nelson Weekly. The Swedish Bakery in Nelson has come on board, supplying bread to go alongside the meals they cook, and there have been a number of donations of money. Joni Nacagilevu, one of the 20 people involved in making the meals, says they have also had around 80 new people join them on Facebook; meaning a growing awareness for what they do and plenty of nominations. Joni says Nomin-eat are thinking about increasing the number of meals they cook from 50 to 100.

Garin's Mahi Toi festival another smashing success Simon Bloomberg Flying hot air balloons can be a risky business, as students from Garin College found out during the school's Mahi Toi festival. Te Wairoa o nga Mahi Toi means the "spirit of creation in the arts", and last Thursday and Friday students at Garin attended a range of artistic workshops and activities as part of the festival. One of the most popular activities was Sky's the Limit, which involved making paper hot air balloons, but as 91 students found out it wasn't all plain sailing. Two of the paper balloons caught fire on the launching pad and another made an unplanned landing high up in a tree on the edge of Avery Field. But, according to teacher Tony Etchells, those miniHindenburg disasters are just part of paper hot air ballooning. "I found the plan for the balloons on the internet and we had a trial run with my two young boys at home. It went perfectly so we are trying it here, but things do go wrong. "If if it's too windy we lose some of them and there's always a chance of a fire. One of the balloons we lost last year landed two kilometres away and someone phoned the school and said they had found it." Garin's arts coordinator Lindsey Furlong-Taylor says students participated in flax weaving, claymation and cup cake decorating activities, as well as range of arts including singing, drama and creative writing. Students also created a stunning ensemble of clothing out of recyclable material for the RAW (Recyclable Art that is Wearable) competition. There were 40 entries in the RAW competition, with students Ellie

Elle says they decided on that theme after seeing an advertisement that showed one in three people suffer from domestic violence abuse. "We thought this was really shocking and we wanted to raise some awareness about that, so we created this garment that resembles some of this," Ellie says. "It's made from chipped cracked plates and broken curtains to symbolise the broken families and physical and mental damage domestic violence causes." People will have a chance to see the best of last week's performances and creations when Garin holds its Mahi Toi concerts at the Hope Community Church on July 1 and 2, starting at 7pm. Tickets for the concert cost $5 for adults and $3 for school-aged children and can be purchased at the Garin College office.

Stoke shopper wins $10,000 cash

Hope-based Delta has signed a new five year, $40 million contract with Network Tasman to maintain electricity and fibre optic cables in the region. The deal includes network maintenance, responding to faults and minor capital works. Delta has provided maintenance services to Network Tasman since 2011, employing 54 staff based out of the main depot in Hope and regional depots in Nelson, Motueka, Murchison and Takaka. Under the contract, Delta also maintains and builds Network Tasman’s consumer fibre optic communications network in Tasman and Marlborough.

Then last Monday, Ange got a phone call from the national headquarters of the Mad Butcher saying she was the national winner of the $10,000, a day that also happened to be her birthday. “That’s why I thought it was a prank. I thought someone was playing a joke on my birthday.” Ange says she isn’t sure what she’s going to do with the money yet. The options include a holiday, shopping spree or “doing the sensible thing” and putting it on her mortgage. Dan says he was stoked to see to go to a local. “And it’s great that a regular customer got it as well. Awesome.”

Delta signs $40M contract

Ange Cousins thought it was a wind up, she just wasn’t sure who would play that kind of prank on her birthday. “I didn’t believe the guy on the phone when he said I won $10,000. It wasn’t until I had another call from Dan [Perrin, owner of Mad Butcher Stoke] that I realised it was for real.” Ange was one of two Mad Butcher shoppers in New Zealand to win a $10,000 cash prize, simply by shopping at the store earlier this month. She says she remembers filling out the entry form but thought it was for some free meat, so didn’t think too much about it.

Modellers Pond: I have been a user of the modellers pond for over twenty years sailing my models of Nelson immigrant ships I have made. It is a fantastic pond to use and the cub scouts used to use it for their annual raft races back in the 1980’ -90s. I am sure in the future there will be some other hobby or craze, like the resurgence of scooters, that will be only too keen

to use it one day. Peta Raggett.

Rocks Rd footpath: It seems to me that if no trucks were allowed on Rocks Rd there would be no crumbling footpaths, and probably no disintegrating cliffs either. What a huge saving in time and money that would be! Those heavy trucks must be responsible for shaking the road which was never intended to support such behemoths when it was originally built on reclaimed land. Alison Kelso.

I say “Go Jetstar NZ”. Air NZ needs to have some competition to keep their pricing honest. We were recently flying to Invercargill a few times. It cost me less to come from Melbourne to Invercargill than it did from Wellington to Invercargill, by $100!! How the hell does that work. Jetstar will get things competitive which will be great. Help us build it!

Former Tour de France rider Nathan Dahlberg has ridden bikes of all shapes and sizes all around the world, but admits he will need to do some training to get used to the new 'mountainbike' he got last week. The Nelson-based cyclist, who rode in the Tour de France in 1988 and 1989, is aiming to set a new world record by riding a bike on top of the 8051 metre Broad Peak in Pakistan, next month. It would be impossible to carry a conventional bike up that high so Nathan asked his friend and cycling enthusiast, Dean Rainbow, to build a custom-made 'mountainbike' just for the expedition. "We had to eliminate anything that could fail in the low temperatures at that altitude," Nathan says. "It's 20-below up there and things likes chains, brakes and derailleur's would freeze up solid so we went for a penny-farthing design.

than jokes that he could take off and hit some seriously high speeds riding down the 35 degree slopes on Broad Peak without brakes. Nathan says he plans to take the bike for a test run carrying it up Mt Arthur and then riding it on the tops before he flies to Pakistan on July 9. “I’ll be riding it in the snow and ice wearing climbing boots and crampons so I’ll need some practise. The hardest part could be finding a flat piece of ground on the mountain - it’s going to be very steep.” Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world and if Nathan is successful he will break the present record of biking on the 7564m Muztaga Ata in China. He will attempt the record with Slovakian climber Zdeno Brnoliak, supported by a team of three other climbers. He expects the expedition to take around three weeks. Nathan is being sponsored by Kathmandu and Absolute Wilderness.

Choosing a career is a big decision for school-leavers but Waimea College year 12 students got a chance to have a test run last week when they ventured into the workplace for a day. Over 50 students signed up for this year’s Work Shadow programme which aims to give them a better understanding of the workplace environment. The students contacted workplaces around the district about the programme and last Thursday spent the day with their new employer learning the ropes. “Many students at secondary school have only a limited idea of what takes place in the workplace,” Waimea College Transition Coordinator, Rochelle Callaghan says. “Students, on the whole, return with more information and depth of understanding of what a work area involves. “They gain a knowledge of .co.nz the sorts of tasks, skills and training required. It really is a positive experience for the students, and we thank the employers for that.” Rochelle says the programme Waimea College student Emily Ramsay, left, with also encourages students to talk Richmond Vet Clinic’s Sally Powell at work last Thurs- about career options with their day. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. parents and caregivers and is

an opportunity for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to the community. Student Emily Ramsay says she selected the Richmond Vet Clinic because she wants to be a vet nurse. Although she already worked two afternoons a week cleaning at the clinic, she wanted to get a closer look at the surgical aspects of vet nursing. “I love animals and helping people so vet nursing is the perfect job for me,” Emily says. “The only thing I’d be worried about is getting too attached to the animals and wanting to adopt them all the time.” Veterinarian Sally Powell says she has been supporting the Work Shadow programme since it started three year ago. “It’s great for the kids to have hands-on experience to see if a job is what they expected. There’s a lot of romanticism about being a vet nurse but the reality can be quite different.” Rochelle says Waimea College also offers a similar programme for the Year 10 students called Work Watch which has been running for over 10 years. She says employers have “always been very supportive of these programmes and willing to have our students over successive years”.

The Kiwiana Caper has been ten weeks in the making but the hard work has paid off after the first of the school’s performances took place on Wednesday. Directed and choreographed by teacher Glenna Armstrong, the production was actually written around seven years ago by two teachers from Henley School. Richmond received permission to perform it as it fitted in so well with the school’s term topic of Aotearoa and has been adapted for Richmond by parent Kirsty Mirfin. It’s the finale for everything the students have learnt over the term, including New Zealand icons, places and famous people. “I’ve always believed you should give kids lots of different opportunities and experiences and this is, for some, the best thing that they do at school,” principal Tim Brenton says. “It’s their forte and it may not be out front as one of the main actors - it’s all part of being a team. “There are some kids who just thrive on being backstage in sound or lighting. Farmlands has been through a few changes in its time, including the move into its current premises on Main Rd Hope and, of course, its brand change from CRT; but one thing has, and always will remain the same, and that’s the staff ’s commitment to quality products and reliable advice. While the co-operative itself has been active in Richmond for many years, the building that accommodates staff and products is celebrating its fifth anniversary. When it was first introduced to the public at a grand opening party in 2010, both the Farmlands team and customers were delighted with its drive-through area and efficient flow, through sliding doors into the expansive store. Overall it provided Farmlands customers with an enhanced shopping experience and is certainly one of the reasons for Farmlands’ success. Resene High Five

While Farmlands is a farmer-owned co-operative, their services and products are for everyone, and that’s something the staff want everyone to know. It’s not all farm supplies either; Farmlands stock a huge range of products that cater to many areas, from clothing and apparel, to irrigation, household supplies, footwear, hand tools, safety equipment, animal health, horse care and stock feed for just about every animal on two or four legs. Although Farmlands is based in Richmond, Nelson customers are still on their list of priorities and there are a couple of important reasons why shopping with the co-operative is worth it. Farmlands offers customers a different type of retail experience because the team in the store are all experts within their specific category. “If somebody wants to come in and talk dog food, they

If people want advice, that’s what we’re here for, that’s why we hire the caliber of people that you’ll find at Farmlands,” says manager Bryan Thomas. Farmlands Richmond wants to make sure that people get the best value for money and, by making sure their staff have a full product knowledge, customers can walk away knowing they have spent their money wisely. What many customers aren’t aware of is the variety of stock that Farmlands hold and anything they don’t have in-store can be sourced, whether externally or from Farmlands’ network of 82 stores nationwide. It doesn’t matter if it’s stock food or clothing, Farmlands make sure they stock reliable brands and, in doing so, they can confidently stand by what they sell; they even wear it themselves because of its quality and durability, although it has to be hardwearing in order to stand up to the less than delicate life of many of their farming customers. New Show H On the Brightside The June meeting of the Brightwater Community Association was well attended, with guest speakers being Mayor of Tasman, Richard Kempthorne, and TDC CEO Lindsay Mackenzie. Items discussed with the Mayor were the noise after midnight outside the Brightwater Hall, lowering of the speed limit in Ellis Street, and the shortage of carparks in the commercial area, the dangers at the intersection of Ellis Street, Lord Rutherford Road and Bryant lane, the Bryant Lane Pumping Station and concerns about cyclists and pedestrians sharing footpaths. We were also updated on progress of the Waimea Community Dam. TDC say they will be meeting with us in September to follow up these projects. The Mayor also commented very favourably on the feedback received from the public about the 100th Anzac Day Celebration in Brightwater. Brightwater residents are welcome to display community notices on our Community Noticeboard in Ellis Street - just leave your notice in the satchel at the front of the noticeboard. Our next meeting is on Monday 6 July at 7.30pm in the Brightwater School staffroom. The next meeting will combine with our annual general meeting and election of officers night, and will be followed by a light supper. All are welcome to attend, Especially if you have any feed back on the new recycling bins and collections. We would also like feedback from residents about the speed of broadband and availability of mobile phone coverage. The Community Association has been asked to coordinate this for the Council in their bid to get this service upgraded. Andy McQueen, Chairperson, Brightwater Community Association

Brightwater School Students enjoyed a visit from Royal New Zealand Air Force Officer Cadets

Air Force drops in on Brightwater Students Brightwater School students experienced military style camp training last week when members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force visited their school. The Air Force officer cadets are participating in an Initial Officer Training Course in the Wairoa River Gorge area focusing on leadership adventure training. Part of their programme required the group to put together and participate in a community project. The group chose to visit two schools in the area to show students what they have learned and experienced during their time within the Air Force with Year 5 and 6 students. The group organised various ac-

tivities for the children, including drills, how to put up tents, use of radios for communication and how to use camouflage vision. They also set up a military style obstacle course and provided tours of two Unimogs. Officer cadet, Mikaela Christian organised the school visits and says it was a great team exercise. “It has been pretty awesome and we have seen a huge lift in morale,” says officer cadet Mikaela. The students and teachers enjoyed the training camp too. “I think the Air Force is awesome because they protect people, I liked watching the drills and going in the trucks,” says Year 5 student Jack Rawson.

Celebrating Community

Food is an important part of any celebration in all nations of the world, regardless of culture or religion. It has the ability to unite and strengthen community bonds and helps to maintain a common identity among a group of people. As a way of celebrating and creating community of the older residents in Brightwater, the Brightwater Community Anglican Church is holding their annual mid winter Christmas dinner for Brightwater’s over 65 year

olds on Tuesday 21 July. If you are over 65 and live in the Brightwater district you are invited to come to this free celebration. You can reserve your place by ringing the church office on 542 3694. Even the preparation and serving of the meal is a celebration of community, with the church organising, and other community organisations and individuals partnering together to present a wonderful meal. If you would like to offer help, please also contact the Church office.

A big thank you to all our Volunteers Our volunteers: Nelson have organised a volunteer challenge, incorporating a number of familiar local faces. It’s the first time the agency has done something like this to celebrate National Volunteer Week and it will see nine local leaders volunteering at nine different organizations for half a day each during the week. Volunteers in our community conduct a range or roles including environmental work, offering support to refugees, support at food banks, supporting the elderly, helping out at sport clubs and at events. There is also a demand for volunteers within the administration sector, including information technology and finance, and also at governance level as a committee or board member. People volunteer their time to organizations for a range of reasons; it could be a personal interest in the area, a desire to meet people or to help people, or to gain work experience. “It’s an opportunity for you to discover what you are passionate about. You can volunteer in any area that interests you, and you will begin to find out about what makes you happy: talking with people, young or old; IT work; or working with animals,” says Katy. Wanderers Win tasman trophy! Wanderers Sports Club has a proud history of success. Whether it’s been netball, cricket, senior B or thirds rugby, even tennis. But it’s been a long time since the club’s top rugby team could call themselves champions, more than 60 years in fact. This month, the drought ended. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers division one team won the Tasman Trophy and in the process its first major club rugby title in six decades. Former players, coaches and long-time

“There has been a few big bets out there from the old boys so the heat was on us. I’m glad we came through, it’s good for the club and it’s been a long time coming.” Club manager and life member Diane Drogemuller says there was a sense of relief as well as joy when the team won the Tasman Trophy after losing three finals in the last three years. “It was a biggie for the club,” Diane says. “There was just such a buzz around the club before the game and when they won. “I’ve been around a long time and I was

supporters have been vocal in their pleasure at the win over arch-rivals Waimea Old Boys and team captain Trael Joass says his team was aware of the senior’s long run without any championships. “It’s a feeling like ‘finally’, you know? There’s been a good core bunch of guys here for four years now and the new boys have bought into what we’re all about. Team morale is there, that’s the key.” He says there was pressure from some of the old boys to finally bring home some silverware.

thinking ‘is it going to be this time?’ I’m glad they won because I was getting tired of bringing the bubbly down to the club and then taking it home again.” And Diane, who has been at Wanderers “for about 35 years”, says that sentiment is shared by many of the club’s dedicated “old timers” including Life Members and former coaches Johnny Robinson and Graham Burrows. “Johnny and his wife Rae have been following the team since Johnny coached them in the 1960s and 1970s.

Wanderers Win tasman trophy! “Graham Burrows is another one who has spent so much time with the club. “He’s coached and been on the committee and is still down there most Saturday’s helping out. It’s been a big part of their lives and I know this win means a lot to them.” Diane says the key to the club’s success has been good coaching and a relatively “stable player base”. “There’s a good bunch of guys and they have been with the club for a long time which helps. The coaching side of things is very good too.” Despite the success of the club already this year, there is still the chance for plenty more silverware. Wanderers are odds-on favourite to meet Waimea Old Boys for the third straight year in the Nelson Bays club rugby championship final and a win there would cap off a memorable season for the Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers captain Trael Joass accepts the team. Mid-winter 'breakout' attracts 350 riders They came dressed as old men, super heroes and one even dressed his bike as a camel, but organisers say this year’s Six Hour Mid-Winter Breakout event was one of the best ever. Around 350 riders in 120 teams took turns cycling a loop of the Rabbit Island mountain bike circuit in the event, which was in its tenth year. Organiser Wayne Pool says it

was the first time it had been back at Rabbit Island for several years after spending the past five at Kaiteriteri, but he says it worked a treat. “I’ve had absolutely superb feedback from the riders, probably the best feedback of any event, so I’m really happy.” Wayne says, for many of the riders it was their first ever mountainbike event and that’s

what the day is all about. “It’s about giving people the opportunity to get involved and give people something to do in the middle of winter as well, because there’s not much else on.” Photos from the event are available at www.nelson-photogra phy.co.nz, in return for a donation to St John ambulance.

Schools rip into hockey

Nelson Hockey’s Craig Brett says. “This year we had teams from as far as Golden Bay and Tapawera attending.” Craig says the tournament is the finale of the Nelson Hockey school visits programme, where coaches instructed over 4000 students around the Nelson region. The tournament was played in five grades with Henley Sharks winning the year 3-4 mixed, Nayland Navy winning the year 5-6 mixed, Henley Leopards winning the year 5-6 girls. Central Black Sticks winning the year 5-6 boys and St Paul’s winning the year 7-8 mixed.

A record number of teams entered this year’s Nelson Hockey Top of the South junior tournament played at Garin College and Saxton Field. One hundred and twelve teams and more than 1000 players from 22 schools competed in the tournament which concluded last Thursday. The tournament has become so big, the year 7 to 8 teams had to be moved to Garin College due to lack of space on Saxton’s all-weather fields. “We only had about 100 players when the tournament started eight years ago so it has really grown,”

Pig hunters brave the cold Weather may have put a dampener on the Wakefield Hotel Boar Hunt, but organisers say it was still a good turn out. The annual hunt raises money for the Wakefield Community, with last year’s $500 given to the school although the decision is still to be made as to where this year’s donation will go. Hunting began last Thursday but poor weather left Friday and Saturday as the only decent days to get out and catch the winning stag or boar. At the prizegiving on Saturday night, George Baigent took the prize for the heaviest boar at 67.5kg and will be getting a shield on the hotel’s plaque. The average weight boar was caught by Nyrin Wills, who also got the largest tusks at 80mm. Ted Oakley entered the only stag which won both heaviest and av-

Twenty runners complete their first marathon

Twenty runners ticked off a major bucket-list challenge on Sunday, completing their first-ever marathon. The Monaco Mid-winter Marathon, in its second year, saw 300 runners compete a marathon, either by themselves, as part of a duo or as part of a six person relay team. Of the 70 doing the full marathon, 20 were doing it for the first time. Organiser Stu Cottom says that’s a fantastic result. “You always remember your first marathon, vividly, so hopefully this

has planted the seed for many of them.” Nelson’s Brian Kemp was the overall winner, coming in with a time of 2 hours and 53 minutes. The event also raised several thousand dollars for the Mental Health Foundation and Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust. Stu says the success of the event means it will be back in 2016, with a date of June 19 already pencilled in. “It was pleasing to see so many people there and I’m very keen for it to go on.”

Jubilee Park will be at full capacity this weekend as Waimea Old Boys get set to hold their annual club day. Nearly every single one of the club’s teams, including the senior A and B teams will be playing at home, and both coaches and players can’t wait. Being the biggest club in Nelson, there isn’t always the opportunity to play all their games together and Saturday, June 27, will be a chance for everyone to come down and celebrate being part of the Waimea Old Boys club.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys will be taking on Stoke as part of the Nelson Bays club championship, with the match kicking off at 3pm. Waimea go into the game as the top of the table and are guaranteed a place in the semi-final; their aim now is to win their two remaining round robin games and secure a home semi. The team has a lot to live up to having been the Nelson Bays trophy champions for the last two years. After a victorious run leading up to the final of the Tasman Trophy, Star & Garter Waimea Old

Boys were unlucky to have their only loss in the finals match. Having the support of a huge Waimea Old Boys crowd on Saturday will definitely put the pressure on to win but as they have proved throughout the season, they have all the resources to do it. Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys Bs are also leading their division two competition and will be going up against the Stoke B team at 1:15pm. Super Liquor Waimea Old boys too have just two round robin games remaining before their semi-finals and will be doing their best to make the Waimea Old Boys club proud. In other matches, the Waimea Old boys under19s are sitting around the middle of their competition but unfortunately, the senior women’s team won’t be playing at Jubilee this Saturday

as they’re currently competing in a ten-a-side tournament. But the day isn’t just about the senior teams; it’s also about the next generation of rugby union talent. And being the largest of the JAB clubs in the Tasman Rugby Union, there will be around 280 Waimea Old Boys kids taking to the field. JAB club captain Jeremy Salton is looking forward to having 19 JAB games taking place from 9am on club day, with some of the senior A and B players wandering round and helping out the kids who aspire to be like them as their rugby skills progress. Both Jeremy and Waimea Old Boys club president Duane Whiting agree the club day is a great way of celebrating the club and bringing together the community which is a big part of what Waimea Old Boys stands for.

Waimea Old Boys Club Day - 27 June 2015

As well as some mentoring from the current senior A and B players, the club says some Super 15 faces will be present on the day, including Chiefs player James Lowe and Crusaders Pete Samu and Billy Guyton. The Waimea Old Boys Club day begins with the JAB rugby from 9am and goes right through until the end of the Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys game. There will be a coffee cart and sausage sizzle available throughout the day and all members are welcome to stay around at the clubrooms for a $5 roast meal where they can hopefully celebrate a victory or two. Duane Whiting says club day is a great chance to celebrate the strength of the club. “We’re really lucky at Waimea, we have great player numbers and support across the board from coaches, parents, players, management, partners and sponsors. They are all critical to the success of the club, but in particular the sponsors and I’d like to thank Chings, Stihl Shop Richmond, Tony Crosbie from the Star & Garter and Steve Page from Waimea Weekly. All are huge supporters of this club.”

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Waimea to host old foe Stoke Simon Bloomberg

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys are determined to step up another level when they play Stoke in their Car Company Nelson division one club rugby game at Jubilee park this Saturday. Waimea hit a speed bump two weeks ago when they lost to Wanderers in the Tasman Trophy final. It was their first defeat of the season but they quickly regained their momentum last Saturday when they beat Kahurangi 20-19 at Jubilee Park. Now Waimea assistant coach Mark Milne wants his team to “keep lifting from there” as they get their division one campaign back on track. “We made a few adjustments after our loss to Wanderers and did a lot of things well

against Kahurangi,” Mark says. “I was very pleased with our defence but we still need to step up from last week. “Stoke have been playing good rugby and are always a good rival so it will be a tough game. We also want to play well because it’s our club day and that means a lot to us. “The club does a lot for us during the year and this is a chance to repay that. We have a very strong bond with the club’s JAB so we’ll be there to support their teams.” Winger Conner Trathen, No 8 Dale Russ and lock Tevita Cavubati scored tries in last week’s win. Waimea Old Boys led 19-6 at half time. The Waimea Old Boys Senior B team beat Riwaka 20-11 in the Car Company Nelson division two competition. Waimea Old Boys Senior Women beat Marist 22-7 and Motueka High 24-5.

Reunion for Waimea’s champion 1975 B team

Club Day will take on a nostalgic feel at Waimea Old Boys this year, when the championship-winning senior B team from 1975 meet for its 40th reunion. The team was coached by club patron Ken Smith and went on to beat Huia in the final in Motueka. Ken and player Colin Stuart were talking earlier in the year and Ken suggested they should host a reunion to celebrate 40 years since the title. Most of the team have been tracked-down and will be at the reunion. Two have passed away and a couple of others haven’t been able to be tracked-down. “There was one guy who came out from England to play for us and he didn’t hang around and there are a couple others that we think are overseas. But most will be there,” says Colin. Colin says he remembers they were down at half time of the fi-

nal, when Ken walked onto the pitch telling the team that one forward and one back wasn’t performing. “Everyone though he was talking about them and that sort of turned us around and we went on to win.” The reunion will start with a lunch at Armidillos, which is providing free lunches for the team. They will then head to Jubilee Park and watch the current senior B team and senior A team play before joining in the club day festivities in the clubrooms that night. Colin says he’s looking forward to catching up with them all but would like other players from that era to come along as well. “We had a good team spirit and camaraderie but we’d like to see anyone who played in that late 70s era to come along and have a beer with us during the games.” Anyone keen to get in touch with Colin can call him on 021 284 0144.

The rates rebate deadline for 2014-2015 rating year is quickly approaching. Applications MUST be in before 30 June 2015 to be accepted. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s Service Centres. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence. To check your eligibility and download a rates rebate form please go to our website www.tasman.govt.nz/property/rates/rates-rebate

Richmond Community Forum General Meeting – 7.30 pm Wednesday 8 July 2015, Tasman District Library Meeting Room. Coffee/Tea provided.

Want better rural broadband access? So do we! The Council is hosting a survey quizzing residents on their internet speed and access. We need your help to get an accurate picture of what internet access is like for Tasman residents so we can apply for government funding to help improve the situation. The idea of this survey is to gain information on: 1. Demand for broadband and mobile Internet services for home, community and business use across our District 2. Areas with no (or limited/poor) service By completing this survey, local people can help clarify where the greatest needs and demand are in the region. This will support our application for government funding for the next phase of fibre deployment in towns, the next phase of broadband in rural areas, and coverage of what are known as ‘Mobile Black Spots’. There are limited funds available for the extension to the rollout and the Government has signalled the most productive and appropriate needs will be met first. The goal of the application is faster and more reliable internet access in our region. You can support this work by completing the survey yourself if you live in Tasman, or passing it on to friends, neighbours and associates. The more responses we have, the stronger our application. The survey is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/tasmaninternet

Applications are open for Tasman District Council’s Community Grants. The Council allocates funds to support and encourage community-led projects. Over the last year, $207,000 was invested in projects ranging from local facility upgrades to local history displays, emergency service equipment to pest control, and local art to ANZAC commemorations. To be considered applications must be for initiatives within Tasman and/or demonstrate the benefits to Tasman residents. Ideally, the funds applied for will be for a specific service that has community support. This year the total allocation is $219,000 over eight categories; • Community and Economic Development Initiatives $30,000 • Arts/Culture/Heritage/Museums $32,000 • Festivals and Events $40,000 • Youth and Children $25,000 • Social Services $21,000 • Environment $20,000 • Emergency Services $16,000 • Sport and Recreation Facilities $35,000 Applications close 31 August 2015. Applications can be made online or you can download an application form at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/community-grants-application Hard copy application forms are available from Council Service Centres and Libraries in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka and Murchison. Contact Tasman District Council Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones for further information on Ph. 03 543 8403.
