Trolley Derby finds new home on Queen St Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
An iconic Nelson event has found a new home in Richmond. The Trolley Derby, a staple Nelson event involving the whole community, celebrates the making and racing of trolley’s. As of 2020, Queen Street will be the new home to the iconic derby. The event places a large emphasis on family, with grandparents, mums and dads getting together with their kids to create their own trolley each year to race. Originally beginning in the 1950’s, the derby came and went several times before being revived in 2002, lasting 16 years. The derby was organised by the Nelson Trolley Club, who took over the event in 2010, after it being sponsored by South Canterbury Finance for a few years and Fresh Choice before that. However, the event stalled last year, unable to get sponsorship from local businesses.

Tim Bayley, one of the organisers, says that the proposed track would be from the Queen Street/ Hill street intersection, down to Edward Street on Upper Queen Street. “We wanted a change, and we went to see the Tasman District Council, they were very positive about having it here, it used to be in Richmond, and we thought it was time to bring it back,” says Tim Bayley. Stainless steel innovation for Moutere Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A residence on top of one of the hills in Moutere is going to have the first stainless steel pipes to provide water to a family house. Drilling work like this is the first that’s ever been done by the Waimea Drilling company and is expected to be finished next week. A 250-metre hole is being dug in order to the install stainless steel pipes. “The customer specified he wanted to use stainless steel which is quite unusual for this application as a house supply,”
ongoing but he was confident that it would succeed. “We don’t guarantee that we are going to find water, but we are pretty confident that we are”. Bernard Schinider is the owner of the property and explains why he chose the stainless steel piping. “Water that deep fell as rain more than 20 thousand years ago and it has been in the ground for a very long time, so this was before pollution”, said Bernard, who works in the food industry. He also intends to share the extra water with other people in town. “We have two water units here and somebody else can use it, like two new families in Mapua”, he says.
said Brandon Higgins responsible for the drilling. The work done with stainless pipes lasts longer and preserves the water quality. “Stainless steel doesn’t rust so it gives the water better quality, and regular pipes would last 50 years or more and those ones I`m not too sure, but it is longer” says Brandon. He says, usually this kind of material is used at water bottling companies or any related to high-quality, water as in food companies. “It`s very much expensive and that’s probably why a lot of people haven’t used it in the past”. The work on the property is

New service gets Wakefield moving Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A new bus trial for Wakefield is set to get underway next week, thanks to the hard yards put in by a community trust and concerned members of the community. The group, Nelson Tasman Community Trust, got a funding boost recently. Thanks to a community connect grant for $12,500 from the Office for Seniors, the community trust now has the means to begin researching the transport needs for older people in the Tasman district, and trial a community bus service between Wakefield and Nelson will be funded as part of this research. The Nelson Tasman Community Trust was formed in October 2018 and came about to meet a need that was severely lacking – a bus service between Wakefield and Nelson. In 2017 a petition for a Wakefield bus service yielded little results, after a Tasman District Council commissioned study reported that a service between Wakefield and Richmond would not be used enough to be viable.
John Vanderlaan, Hillary bird, Kerstein Beckmann, Peter Olorenshaw, Drew Bryant, June Johnston, Dyotana Constance, Jo Leyland, Ian Viapree and Dean McNamara who have been involved in the effort, trialling the new service. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Frustrated over the lack of results, several members of the community started to get organised. “In essence, the formation of our trust was in response to that,” says Kate Malcolm, chair of the Nelson Tasman Community Trust. Kate explained that a lot of other people came on board who had different concerns, particularly

about isolation in towns like Wakefield. “The whole lifestyle in areas like Wakefield is based around the use of a car, and if for some reason you can no longer drive, you’re completely stranded.” One particular group that Kate says is particularly isolated due to a lack of transport options is
older people. “We are in real need of a service that can keep older people in these areas mobile,” says Kate. Nathalie Lacaze Campell, treasurer for the trust, says that the project follows long term calls for increased public transport services in rural areas. “The grant will be used to re-
search the needs of elderly people in Mapua, Motueka, Tapawera, and with a trial bus service soon to start in Wakefield, the result of the research will be used towards a long term plan to offer more transport options.” Kate says the Wakefield bus trial will be open to all, but the timetable will be based around the needs of older people. “It’s early stages, at this point we’re looking at doing one return trip in a 9 passenger van that has been loaned to us.” The van is owned by the Wakefield Rest Home. A year ago when the new owner, Hilary Bird, had just taken over, councillor Dean McNamara approached her on behalf of the trust to see if the van could be used by the community when it wasn’t needed by the resthome residents. It turned out she’d had the same idea herself. In order to make the trial viable, the service will need to be half filled every trip. The service is based around similar models that have been used in Canterbury, and Kate says that it’s the first concrete step in the process of developing an efficient bus service. “We’re still early on, but we’re hoping it will gain momentum.”
If you are up to the challenge or know someone who is, now is the time to step forward. The future of the region is shaped by the decisions its elected representatives make – it’s not easy, it’s challenging, but it is rewarding delivering to your environment and community now and creating a future for our children. Closing 12 noon on Friday 16 August 2019. Nomination forms, information packs and Council pre-election reports can be picked up from libraries and Council offices.

Pigeon Valley fire six months on: Anatomy of a disaster The grass was so dry it was a pale shade of yellow. So, when Joel Scott drove past and saw leaping flames, he knew it was bad. He dumped his ute in the middle of the road and ran towards the fire. He fumbled for his phone and punched 111. “We’re going to need a chopper real fast,” he tells the call operator at 2.14pm on February 5 this year. He says the location, up Pigeon Valley Rd, is about 30km south of Nelson. Within minutes, it had gone from “the size of a barbecue fire” into a vast forestry block. As he talked to the contract tractor driver who’s understood to have inadvertently sparked the blaze when disc-ploughing a farmer’s field, other emergency calls flooded in. Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade were alerted to a vegetation fire at 2.16pm, according to the Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) SMS incident report. Brightwater units were roused about the same time. Fire and Emergency NZ’s internal message log first records details of a bush fire at 2.15pm. One minute later, it notifies of “a large bush fire – spreading due to winds”. By 2.20pm, a fire lookout operator stationed on the Barnicoat Range above nearby Richmond has directed the first helicopter to respond. Five minutes later, two more choppers are diverted from
a fire in the Waihopai Valley in the Marlborough region. Within 50 minutes of the first station alert coming through, 11 fire appliances from across the region had arrived on the scene. Just over an hour later, a central fire command point was set up. By 4.42pm on that first day, discussions were already being held on whether they needed to establish an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). Flames were reported to be leaping to 30m in the air as the 700mwide fire front had travelled approximately 2km in just two and a half hours. By 5.30pm, the fire service was getting calls from concerned tourists over whether they needed to evacuate their coastal camping grounds some 15-20km away. Homeowners were also ringing in asking whether they needed to gather up their things and escape. An evacuation centre had been set up at St John’s Anglican Church in Wakefield. By 6.33pm, the fire was “uncontained”, with five helicopters attacking it from the air. Residents in Eves Valley and Teapot Valley were by now being evacuated. Ground crews pulled out of Eves Valley shortly after 8pm “leaving it to the helicopters as it is too

By the next morning, Pigeon Valley was deemed “safe”, but residents still weren’t allowed home. Some landowners were escorted back to grab pets and transport livestock. That afternoon the Redwood Valley fire was contained around the houses. Sixteen helicopters were available for the aerial assault. Six more were available by day two, along with two fixed-wing aircraft which were used to drop fire-retardant. Over the following days, a total of 61 units from across the country were scrambled to join the fight. It would be the biggest-ever aerial firefighting operation in New Zealand’s history. The blaze spread across 2316 hectares, spanning 36.4km – a greater area than the devastating 2017 Port Hills fires in Christchurch. After 22 days, Civil Defence lifted the state of emergency. Fenz says it is undertaking an independent operational review of its response to the Tasman fires. “We will consider the findings once it has been completed,” says national manager response capability Paul Turner. However, the “indicated cause” of the fire is “operating equipment and machinery”, according to the SMS incident report.

Richmond still open for business Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Despite the closed doors, most of Queen Street businesses are recovering after last year’s major roadworks. There were 15 empty spaces on Queen Street and Sundial Square last week as well as some businesses closing, but the area is still a great place to invest. “Some of the empty slots already have new tenants, so they won’t stay closed for a long time”, says Charlotte Bidlake, events and marketing co-ordinator from Richmond Unlimited. Their primary role is to promote Richmond and to support and further the business interests of the central business zone. “We have the intention to talk to some real estate agents to think of ideas for good use of those spaces”, she explains. According to Charlotte, some good examples of business ideas would be a pizza enterprise, a florist or even a wine bar. “Those are the type of businesses we still don’t have on the road and would fill this gap in the market”,. Richmond Unlimited intends to annouce a new promotional

For the last 8 years, Mark Henderson has been the owner of the AvantiPlus bike store on Queen Street, and he is optimistic. “I think that the rent is reasonably high for a provincial town, but the plus side is that Richmond is a growing area and it’s growing quite rapidly”, says Mark.

Mark says, while you always have to be careful, if you do your homework and be smart about it, Richmond is a great place for business. Geoff Faulkner, the sales and leasing manager for Collins International, highlights the positive changes that the region has been through after the roadworks finished in 2018.
“Richmond is very popular at the moment”, he says. According to Geoff, “there is always a level of vacancy because it is a dynamic business, but since the roadworks were finished retailing is going very well in this region.” Heather Holland is a business owner who will contribute to the dynamic of Queen Street.
She owns the Classique Spa & Beauty Therapy that’s moving from Croucher St to Queen St next week. “We have been here for 20 years, we’ve outgrown our building and I think that will be a better location for me”, says Heather. “The street has a lovely outdoor area, people can sit outside, its got lovely plants, it’s just a nice place to be”. Not all businesses are feeling the same success, with one Queen Street shop closing its doors. “My brand has been in Nelson for more than 30 years, but with the competition from online shopping and particularly with the roadworks, it’s been hard to keep the business going,” says Lea Lock, owner of Foxy Lady. For her, it’s important that the community gets out there and supports those local businesses on Queen Street. Nicola Woodbury, owner of the Wooden Spoon Café, agrees that only the community will be able to maintain all the businesses down the street. “We need to be a drawcard for each other, to be a strong shopping community, to support each other and that’s the way for us to be strong”.

Lax landlords create insulation backlog Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A local insulation installer is frustrated that the lack of uptake from Nelson landlords to insulate their rentals has led to a backlog - despite them having plenty of warning. From July 1, ceiling and underfloor insulation must be installed in all rentals, where possible. Failure to comply may lead to a fine of up to $4,000 for landlords with penalties of up to $1000 for property managers. Landlords were given a generous three-year grace period to meet the requirements, after the last National government passed the law change in response to concerns that many rentals did not provide warm,
dry and safe accommodation. But owner of Absolute Energy, Paul Brockie, says despite having three years, many Nelson landlords left it until the last minute. So far, they have insulated over 2000 rentals in the region to meet the new legislation and have been “consistently busy” with plenty of pressure from landlords trying to comply by June 30. “Some property managers have been as frustrated as us with the lack of uptake from landlords when this Act was introduced three years ago,” says Paul. “We tried all sorts of things to encourage landlords to make an early decision and while lots of landlords are awesome and did, lots put their heads in the sand hoping it would
go away… Acts of Parliament don’t go away.” Paul says although they now have a back log, people have been understanding. “We are doing our best to satisfy everybody.” To date, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has received six calls seeking advice on insulation from Nelson with only one breach being reported to the Tenancy Tribunal since July 1. Meanwhile, Paul says his advice to landlords whose rentals are still not up to standard is to get your property assessed, get a quote and make a decision. “I know compliance teams are building around the country and I am sure no one wants to be in the space of ‘non-compliance’.”
Getting set up for solar power generation On a sunny day, solar power generation systems connected to our network produce enough electricity to run more than 800 average sized houses.
It’s important for us to know when new solar generation systems (known as photovoltaic or PV systems) are planned for connection to the network because we need to make sure the equipment meets required technical standards and is set correctly to maintain a good level of power quality for everyone using the network. We also need to know where PV systems are so we can keep line workers safe when they undertake network maintenance. Our process to help guide you through getting a PV system connected to the network is as follows:

Stage 2: If you decide you want to connect the system to the network, fill in a pre-purchase application form. This form is on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/solar. We use the information provided on this form to check that the part of the network you want to connect to has the capacity to handle the power from your system and to make sure it meets the required technical standards. We will also pass the details on to your energy retailer. They will make arrangements to fit a new meter that can record any surplus electricity exported back into the network. Stage 3: Once your system is installed and before it is connected to the network by a Network Tasman approved contractor, the installation will need a Certificate of Compliance issued, import/export metering fitted, and a final inspection. Your installer or electrician will help with arranging these things. If you are thinking about investing in a PV system and you want to connect it to the network, check out our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/solar, give us a call on 0800 508 098, or email us at info@networktasman.co.nz.

Graffiti hits business
The graffiti found by Jan Cockeram was at the Richmond Dental Centre back door. Photo: Bruno Saia
Overnight between the 17th and 18th of July the back door of the Richmond Dental Centre was found with graffiti on it. “It’s the first time this has happened”, said the practice manager Jan Cockeram. “We called the police and also the City Council, but we have been told that there are no cameras on the car park”. According to her, “that makes it harder to identify who did this”. Several other buildings in the area also have graffiti on them.

The work for the Waimea Community Dam has finally begun. Waimea Water Limited, which was formed to oversee the construction of the project, gathered to turn the first soil on the Dam project last week. The turning of the soil marks the start of the second phase, construction of the dam. The concrete face rock-fill dam will be 53m high, 220m long, and 6m wide at the crest. Around 430,000m3 of rock will be used to build the dam. Phase two is expected to take around 18 months, with a finishing date of October 2021 set. Once the dam is completed, the reservoir created by the dam will fill up naturally over several months, with the final commissioning in February 2022. The lake created by the dam will contain approximately 13 million cubic metres of water.

According to New Zealand Police, in a non-emergency situation like this, people should call 105 (“ten five”) or go to the website 105.police.govt.nz to report it. The new 105 number has been available since May and it was created to report things that have already happened, that don’t need urgent police assistance. For emergencies that are ongoing or have just happened, people should call the 111 number. That’s the phone that must be use in in case of fire and also to call an ambulance.

Mike Gill, Marty Price, and Mark Booker from Community Patrol Richmond with local Carol Barrett. The men from community patrol installed a security light in Carol’s driveway to provide safety and security, an idea that Marty Price, co-founder of Community Patrol Richmond, had three years ago. In the past three years the patrol has installed 21 security lights in the homes of elderly or those living alone, to provide peace of mind. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

60’s rock and roll bands are William’s inspiration when playing the drums. Photo: Bruno Saia.
Local drummer gets spotlight Bruno Saia
William Connor is only a 9-year old boy, but he is often spotted playing the drums as part of an adult band at Club Waimea in Richmond. “I play for fun and because I love music”, said the young prodigy. “My favourite bands are The Beatles, Queen and AC/DC” he confidently stated. “I play when I want to have fun”, he said. “You pretty much play every day, don’t you?” added his mum Paula Connor. His whole family is made up of musicians and that’s how he man-
aged to win a few prizes already. His band with his sister won the Open Band category at this years NZ Gold Guitar Awards in Gore. “They made it to the finals against me and my husband’s band”, said his mom. “William did a drum solo, everyone went wild and they beat their parents”, she laughed. William is counting the minutes until next year when he is going to watch his first big rock concert. With the prize money from one of the competitions, the whole family are going to watch Queen with the Adam Lambert show. He can’t wait!

The Snowdens Bush Trust, formed in late 2018, has got some momentum behind it, after gaining its charitable status and beginning its fundraising effort. Work began in 2018, when a group of Brightwater residents led by Janice Gibbs approached Nelson MP Nick Smith seeking advice regarding a proposed local land sale, when the The Nelson Diocesan Trust an-
nounced its intention to sell the former glebe in September 2018. The group hopes to purchase 3,500m² of land from the glebe, which would have been sold for residential development. Once purchased the land will be gifted to the Department of Conservation, custodian of Snowden’s Bush, and integrated into the reserve to ensure its environmental and heritage conservation. A sale and purchase agreement has
Ltd
been reached with the The Nelson Diocesan Trust, and now just has to be ratified by several boards within the Church, and will be signed on 2 August. Now, the trust has 12 months to raise the $350,000 required to purchase the land. A quiz night earlier this month saw the beginning of the fund-raising effort, but trust chair Jeremey Cameron says that it will have to be a community effort. While the community support has been great so far, and the trust has had positive constant feedback, the next step is to translate that into more formal support, Jeremy says. “We won’t get there unless everyone chips in.” The trust has set up a givealittle page, https:// givealittle.co.nz/cause/snowdensbushtrust, and anyone interested can also check the Snowden’s Bush Trust website or Facebook page for additional information.

Online voting gets underway for local hospitality awards When it comes to hospitality venues everyone has their favourites, whether it’s your go-to place for fantastic coffee, your regular pub that serves up a warm welcome and a good pint, or a reliably good restaurant where the food is just divine. To show your appreciation for a particular hospitality business in Nelson, people now have the opportunity to vote for them in the 2019 Ora King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards. The biennial awards are a celebration of excellence in the industry, presented by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand and Hospitality New Zealand. “As of Monday, July 22nd, the online voting for the People’s
Choice categories has gone live on the Nelson Hospitality Awards Facebook page and also on the Nelson App,” says organiser Shelley Haring. “The voting will be open for one month.” Nominations opened on June 14th and closed on July 1st, with over 1000 nominations received for the 14 different categories, which includes ‘Barista
of the Year,’ Outstanding Ambience and Service,’ ‘Head Chef of the Year,’ ‘Best Accommodation Provider,’ ‘Best Restaurant,’ and ‘Best Local Supplier.’ With the nominee shortlists now finalised, Shelley says eight of the categories will be voted on by people’s choice and the rest will be independently judged. “The winners are kept under wraps

until they are announced at the awards night party.” This takes place on September 9th at The Rutherford Hotel, tickets are now on sale via the Nelson Hospitality Awards Facebook page. Tickets include a 3-course meal with beverages. $110 per ticket or $1000 for a reserve table of 10. “What’s really cool about this

year is that lots of nominees are new businesses which have opened since the last awards in 2017,” says Shelley. “So, it’s not all the same regulars which is really nice. Also, the number of nominees here in Nelson is really big compared to what other regions get. This shows that Nelson people are really behind their hospitality industry.”
Organiser Harry Morris also described the local participation as ‘excellent.’ “It’s the best in New Zealand, which shows that people are keen on the whole event and want to be involved. Having that uptake in the first round of voting in fantastic. It’s also great to see a broad range of businesses in the various categories. This goes to show there is quite a
diverse customer base and variety of hospitality outlets now. As usual, some of the newer ones have come to the front again which is a national thing because they are fresh in people’s minds, and it’s also good to see some longstanding places nominated as well. It’s not all about being the ‘new kid on the block, it’s about being

involved in the industry and participating.” This year several nominations have been received for ‘Head Chef ’ and `Up and Coming Chef ’ who will now be contacted to see if they are willing to be in the competition side of it. “Not everyone can fit it into their busy schedules.” Overall, Harry says the competition is moving along at the same pace as previous years, with about the same amount of interest. “We are hopeful the night will be as good as it has been in the past.” He says with ticket sales typically starting off quite slowly, everyone seems to want to buy theirs at the last minute. “At the 2017 event, we had to fit in another 15 people on the day of the event. It’s always a bit of a scramble at the end, but the Rutherford are always really good at managing this event; it gets down to the wire at the end when the hard work is done on the organisational side of things.”

NELSON HOSPITALITY AWARDS
The Nelson Hospitality Awards not only celebrate our region’s fantastic, hardworking hospitality sector, they also provide a benchmark for excellence. “The best thing about competition is that it really makes you look at your business and focus your energy on where you can do better and how you can fix things,” says Harry. “You think – `I could change that'. It makes you look inwardly as much as outwardly because it’s very easy after years and years
of doing something to think it’s all running perfectly, but you know there’s change out there and it makes you re-evaluate what you are doing and put more energy into it.” To vote online for your hospo’ favourites, download The Nelson App or visit The Nelson Hospitality Awards page on Facebook where you can also follow the link to purchase tickets for the Awards Night, happening on September 9th.

food. Coming from a big family, I understand the importance of not wasting food. I was shocked at the volume of wasted food. Now, please excuse me for not being the cleanest, greenest eco machine. I aspire to be driving an electric car but actually drive a diesel van for work. I have never chained myself to a tree. I have never given money to Greenpeace and would never vote for The Green Party. I am average at recycling and often get the wrong item in the wrong box! Despite my mediocre attempts at reducing my carbon footprint, God blessed me with a “light bulb” moment. Within an instant it dawned on me that there was broken, wasted bread available for those in need in our region. Just as Jesus’ body was broken and available for all. Along with a team of
Supporter of Oxford United - The greatest football team in the world! Week in and week out churches across our region “break bread” and drink “wine” (albeit Just Juice or McCoy’s!). We call this communion to celebrate our Common union with God. He loves us enough to become one of us in the person of Jesus. In His broken body centuries ago, Jesus was broken and crucified. The breaking of One made way for the acceptance of all in the Divine family and celebration of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Somehow, the necessary bruising and breaking of Jesus, symbolised by bread, brings us home again. Last year I was watching a Youtube clip with my nine year old son on wasted food in western society. We watched bulldozers burying piles of wasted, out-of-date bread and
about 20 volunteers, we sought to find the broken bread and give to those who needed. One year ago Kai with Love was born! We have collected, sorted, hand packed, and re-distributed to thousands of families across our region, inspired by the words of our Saviour Jesus, “it is better to give than to receive”. Each week the number of families receiving food from us grows. Last week was no exception with more than 600 families receiving our food, over 100 of these on Wednesday in Richmond. This Saturday 27th July Kai with Love will join Helping Families Nelson to celebrate our first birthday with a giveaway of clothing, toys and food. Join us at the Headingly Centre, 10-2pm. For more information find us on Facebook or call 027-230-0146.

Water tank Cleaning Healthy Water tanks = Healthy Drinking Water
With 25 years’ experience behind him, Allan Rasmussen recently started his own business called Southern Streetcars, to get back to doing what he really enjoys – performance vehicle modification. “I first started about 25 years ago,” says Allan. “I moved to Auckland and worked for a couple of race car shops including ProAction, Kiwi-RE and Mark Petch Motorsport and I have built cars for Ashley Stitchbrerry, Kane Scott and Shane Drake. I learnt a lot in 5 or 6 years, then I came back here in 2003 and put it to work.” Allan says that by owning your own business, you feel pretty satisfied seeing what you have just built. “While there’re lots of businesses around which restore older vehicles, my focus is mainly on the performance side of things. Because my work in Auckland was building world series engines for New Zealand and the US, it was to a very high-quality standard. At Southern Streetcars – Performance Vehicle Modification Shop, Allan’s services includes full vehicle builds, exhaust systems and chassis notching, to fabrication services, performance engine builds and cylinder head porting. For more information, visit Southern Streetcars on Facebook, phone Allan on 021 251 8881 or email alrazz71@gmail.com
John Ross has owned his business Water Tank Cleaning for two years now, a venture which has seen him draw on his wealth of past experience. “It was an easy transition after owning Hotwash Waterblasting Ltd for 16 years,” says John. “I learned a lot in my previous business which involved commercial cleaning, including cleaning factories to food grade standards.” John also has a good knowledge of Nelson, Tasman and the West Coast from working across these areas for many years. “I own a ute and a light truck which are both 4WD and are fully equipped with suction and waterblasting gear to clean and sanitize old and new tanks.” John recommends getting your tank cleaned every two years. He has seen sludge at the bottom of water tanks and it’s not uncommon for him to have to remove dead birds, rodents, pollen and leaves. So, he finds it satisfying knowing that families are drinking clean water, because he enjoys helping people. Waimea takes home double win Jonty Dine
Waimea Old Boys have more than one reason to celebrate after a clean sweep in Nelson’s club rugby finals. The men’s team beat Marist and the women’s team beat Moutere in a dramatic day of finals footy on Saturday. The unprecedented rivalry that is Waimea vs Marist in 2019 wrote another thrilling chapter in the saga at Trafalgar Park on Saturday, with Waimea crowned as Car Company Nelson Bays Rugby Champions. With the scores locked at 20-all at full time, the sides were sent to an extra twenty minutes to decide a victor. It came down to a moment of magic from lock Lee Mcbrydie, who produced a spectacular chip and chase to score the match winner for Waimea. “Lee’s a bit of a legend, he started out with the B’s a few years ago as a winger so he’s still got a little bit of that in him,” says skipper Ben Eder

Waimea held off a spirited Moutere side 27-17 in a highly en-
terprising encounter, Skipper Stephanie Mitchell says she was beyond proud of her team. In the men’s final, Marist suffered early on as halfback Cleve Barrell was down with a knee injury. Marist failed to tidy up a high kick and Erenimo Tau pounced

on the loose ball and went in for the first try. Hopo Taufa responded for Marist on the back of a midfield break by Lote Saulekaleka as Waimea winger Daniel Monaghan was sent to the bin for a professional foul, and Michael Stringer com-
mitted a deliberate knock down, reducing Waimea to 13 men. Shannon Frizell was brought off the bench for Marist and the All Black looked to get involved early but as testament to Waimea’s defence, Marist opted to take a shot while hot on attack despite still trailing by 12. The green machine started to get a roll-on and Frizell proved too powerful as he went over for a crucial try to bring Marist within two. A Spowart try brought the score to 20-20 as the fulltime siren sounded. In extra time, as Marist looked as if it would repeat its Tasman Trophy victory, there was another twist. Moving into halfback, James Lash produced a brilliant ball for lock Mcbrydie, who chipped over Spowart and regathered in a superb display of skill. Marist hammered away as the clock wound down, but Waimea barely gave them an inch, eventually turning the ball over and sealing a famous victory.

Richmond athlete runs his 50th marathon Bruno Saia John Fitton ran a marathon for the first time in August 1976. He was 30-year old then and had no idea how many other challenges he was going to face. On June 2019, at 73 years of age, he completed a marathon for the 50th time and has no intention to stop now. “I always wanted to run a marathon, and the idea is that by having a marathon on the horizon you have the oppor-
tunity to train, if you don’t have that kind of objective, you might go a little slack” he says, while already planning his next race. “My aim is for 25 marathons in every 10-year period, going for three per year”, says John. “I’ve done most of my marathons after I was 60, when I was 50 I had done only 17 and I’ve done 33 up till now” he remembers proudly. He confesses the secret for such impressive results.
“If you can’t run, you walk, and if you can jog, then jog, no matter how old you are”. “Running keeps you healthy, it’s as simple as that, but you have to protect yourself from the sun”, reminds John, before he got ready to set off on one of his training sessions. “I’m up to about ten to fifteen hours per week of training because I’m very slow” he laughs. For him, what matters is facing his own limits. “You are competing against
yourself, years ago I could run fast and that’s what I did, now I’m slow, I run within myself and that way you always catch up in the end”. He belongs to the Waimea Harriers Club and every Saturday he is running somewhere with someone. “You meet other people and that’s also important, and you are satisfied when you aim for something”, says John, with his next marathon already in mind.
John Fitton ran most of his marathons after he was 60 and he wants to keep running.
Multicultural tennis day Almost 20 migrants from all around the world got together last Saturday morning at the Richmond Tennis Club to start learning how to play tennis and have some fun. The club supplied all the rackets, balls and the instructions for the players, most of whom were trying it for the first time. Trish Wehner, secretary of the Richmond Tennis Club, said that the idea for the event came up during a meeting with other tennis clubs. “We have a development centre through Sport Tasman, where we sit around the table and talk about events, and how we can promote them”. “Someone said that he had taken a group of migrants for coaching and I thought, ‘let’s do the same,’” says Trish. “So here we are giving it a go.”

Josh Amyes for big things in the pool Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz Tasman Swim Club member Josh Amyes will be part of a 40-person Kiwi team headed to the Australian State Teams Championships in late September. The 16-year-old Year 11 student at Nelson College, who lives near Motueka, said it was all part of his goal to qualify for the Junior World Championships in two years time. ”Those 4:30am alarms can be tough, but it is a motivator.” Josh competes in the 200m and 400m freestyle events and holds six Nelson/ Marlborough swimming records. It was his times at the past national agegroup championships that got him noticed for the squad. ”I train for anything so I train for 800m freestyle then it tops up my 200m and 400m swims and means I can sprint for longer.” Josh said his ”lanky” 6-foot 2-inch frame helps him power through the water in
middle distance races. ”It helps me both with the sprint and endurance levels.” Josh said he was 10 when he started to take swimming more seriously. ”Mum used to coach down at Motueka Swim Club so I used to jump in the car with her and train with her, and I got a lot of interested from that. Then three years ago, I switched to Tasman because (former coach) Andy Adair was here.” He said his former coach was a terrific mentor and worked him hard to push him to the next level. His new coach, Daniel Bell, who he has paired with for the past six, months is continuing to build on that foundation. Josh’s commitment stretches to nine pool sessions a week ranging up to two hours at a time, and he also has a gym training programme and diet to stick toy. ”It’s all about working towards the bigger goals and I feel like we are on the right track.” The team will have a training camp on the Gold Coast before heading to Canberra for the championships.

Tyler Marsh bound for Minnesota Jacob Page Former Waimea College basketballer and current Nelson Giant, Tyler Marsh, will head to Minnesota on a four-year college scholarship next month. The 19-year-old will play for division two school St Cloud State University where he will study psychology and get there in time for the preseason. Marsh has had to be patient to get his opportunity, having stayed in Nelson to pursue it as many of his mates left for universities around New Zealand. ”January 2018 is when the process began and we started talking to
coaches. ”There can be months that are quiet and they can get scary, but you have to trust the process. ”When I found out I was over the moon, jumping around the house. ”I was super picky, I had in my head where I wanted to go and what it would look like.” Marsh said it was his interactions with the coaches at St Cloud which won him over. ”For all their coaches to ring me before I committed meant a lot in the decision. ”Because it’s just been me for the past year, I’ve been able to focus on me, just hit the gym and work on where I want to go.”

the culvert and coffer dams so as to enable the river to be diverted. This is expected to be completed by autumn 2020. The construction of the 53m rockfill dam can then begin involving about a million tonne of earthworks. The construction of the 124m long spillway is the largest civil works of the project. It ensures the dam’s safety during a major flood. Its construction will begin in spring 2020 when activity on site and the workforce will peak. We expect the dam to be completed in late 2021 and to take about three months to fill. It has been a tortuous political journey to get this project started.

Nelson Matters
I am delighted construction is now underway on the $104m Waimea Community Dam. It is the largest dam to be built in New Zealand for more than 20 years and the biggest infrastructure project in Nelson since the Stoke Bypass. The first stage has been upgrading the access road into the Lee Valley, clearing the pine forest from the dam site, creating a contractor’s yard at Pig Flat and constructing settlement ponds for controlling run off. This has been successfully completed. The next stage is to excavate the actual dam site down to bedrock. Then comes the construction of

It has been subject to over a decade of debate at public meetings, Council meetings, Cabinet meetings, Select Committee Hearings and Parliament. I believe more strongly than ever that it is the right answer to securing the future of our horticultural industry, providing water for our growing urban population, improving the quality of water in the Waimea River and ensuring our region is more resilient to climate change. There are so many ducks to get in a row for a project of this scale to be built. Many have faltered in not getting resource consents, landowner agreements, or funding. My role has been getting a

bill through Parliament to enable access to the conservation land in the Mt Richmond Forest Park and helping secure $40million of grants and discounted loans from Government. I pay tribute to retiring Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne and those courageous councillors who have backed this critical regional project. These major infrastructure projects are always contentious. The easy option for politicians is to defer, seek another report, or do nothing. The Port Nelson Cut, Cobb Dam, Coastal Highway, Maitai Dam and Stoke Bypass all had their critics but have proved
their worth many times over. Now the dam is underway, we need to push on with upgrading the highway into the city and building Nelson a new hospital. Building the dam is now over to Waimea Water and the joint contractors, Taylors and Fulton Hogan to build it. There are many financial, safety and environmental risks for them to manage. It is a large project being built in remote, tough terrain. It will involve a team of over 100 engineers, machine operators and tradespeople, most of whom will be Nelsonians. I wish them every success in getting the dam safely built, on time and within budget. Advt.

Wanderers Sports Club Report
Wanderers Div 2 earn muddy good win over Stoke Taylors Wanderers Rugby continued the excellent 100% representation by teams in Tasman Rugby Union semi-final playoffs for the 2019 season, with the division two team recording a solid win on Saturday at Greenmeadows against competition leaders Stoke. It was Stoke’s first loss of the campaign On a ground that was soggy and muddy following the heavy rain during the past week, both teams endeavoured to play positive rugby, and although defences did dominate, commitment and desire by both teams made the encounter worthy of a final. With Stoke already assured top qualifying for the play offs, the pressure was entirely on Wanderers to perform, as a loss would have resulted in Riwaka securing hosting rights for the second semi-final next week. The coaches had obviously got that message across to their players as Wanderers started in determined fashion and dominated the early exchanges, rarely leaving the Stoke half. Stoke were resolute in defence and thwarted all attacks until a set-play move off a lineout after 30 minutes freed Josh Kelly on the wing, and he eventually linked with centre Ducati Morrell- Hopa who broke the deadlock. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the visitors led 5-0, and so it remained until the break.
Although Wanderers set-plays were solid, and structures and patterns were resulting in some continuity, Stoke’s defence created enough pressure to not allow any increase in the score and the second half continued in the same vein, with Stoke gradually building into the match, necessitating some big defensive efforts from the Wanderers. None were more committed and effective than flanker Gianni Bertacco, who went forward all day and stopped many promising Stoke moves dead in its tracks. Once again play continued for almost 30 minutes with a toeto-toe exchange between teams before Morrell-Hopa charged a kick down and won the ensuing race for the ball to eventually make the game safe for Taylors Wanderers, although again the conversion was astray and Stoke had the final say in the last act of the game to score a deserved try for a 10-7 result. In such a close low, scoring game it is evident that every player must have contributed, especially on defence for both teams and for Wanderers Bertacco was acknowledge as Player of the Day for his absolutely tireless tackling performance. Mark Tilley, who has improved with every game during the season at tight head prop, received two points for his best game, and Morrell-Hopa, with the two well taken tries received one point. The result meant that each
Josh Kelly pushing Stoke’s defence has plenty of Wanderers support with him. Wanderers senior team has this season qualified for every semifinal playoff, following the performance of the Taylors Wanderers division one team in both
Tasman and Nelson competitions and the Women’s team in the Tasman Championship. The club is rightly proud of all these achievements which signi-
fies a healthy, competitive club atmosphere. The division two team has gone a step further in hosting next week’s semi at Centennial Park against Riwaka, who defeated them earlier in the competition. Kick off will be at 2.45pm and there will be a golden oldies tournament preceding, with participants representing four local teams in what promises to be an entertaining, albeit slightly more sedate version of rugby on display. The next event on the club calendar will be the annual prizegiving which is to be held at Brightwater on August 24 which will celebrate the performances of each team in this season’s Tasman Rugby Union championships, acknowledging all players, management, staff, sponsors, partners and supporters of the Taylors Wanderers Sports Club. Contact Diane at Sportwanderers@xtra.co.nz to reserve tickets. Next week will also see a full round of JAB rugby recommence again after the holiday break and 10 games will be played at Lord Rutherford grounds as well as Centennial Park between 9am and 11.30am on Saturday. These games are always played in great spirit by the children and any encouragement is always welcomed. Come out and support the next generation as they display all the correct values that we admire in sport.
