Grapevine rugby ball takes shape The world’s largest grapevine rugby ball was unveiled last week and its owners are hoping Tasman locals and visiting rugby fans will help it grow even bigger. Lars Jensen of Richmond Plains and Jon Harrey of Te Mania wine unveiled the piece as part of a grapevine sculture expo at Richmond Plains and Te Mania Winery along with items from local artists David Carson, Michael MacMillan and Rosanne Armstrong. Seeing it is an organic vineyard, Lars says the vines are just mulched up in to compost each year although on the odd exeption, the vines are used in to balls to put around the house or garden.
SPCA ready for cupcakes
But with the Rugby World Cup around the corner, he was inspired to “go big” and create something a bit more special for the tournament. “We thought the world’s biggest grapevine rugby ball. There’s none bigger that we know of, so we’re claiming it.” Lars estimates the ball to be around 400kg and takes eight “strong” men to carry it around. But the near four meter high ball is still not complete. Visitors are able to add it to on arrival at the winery. “It gets bigger by the day. People might see art but this is a great opportunity to Lars Jensen of Richmond Plains and Jon Harget involved.” The Big Balls Syrah was also unveiled rey of Te Mania wine have constructed a rugby ball out of grapevines. Nelson SPCA’s third annual Cupcake Day is coming on Monday August 29. SPCA Cupcake Day is based on an old fashioned bake sale, where SPCA supporters around the country are encouraged to bake cupcakes and sell them to friends, family and colleagues and send the donations to the SPCA. For the second year in a row, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s cookery department have agreed to help bake and decorate over 500 cupcakes. The cupcakes will be sold at the Nelson SPCA and the SPCA Op Shop and at most Coffee Carts around Nelson and Richmond. Last year’s event raised over $4800 for the Nelson SPCA, with money this year going towards for de-sexing initiatives.

NEWS IN BRIEF Four gold medals at this year’s New Zealand International Wine Show were won by local wines with three coming from the team at Seifried Estate. All three of Seifried’s gold medals were for riesling - one of the winery’s original varieties. Brightwater Vineyard’s 2011 Nelson Sauvignon Blanc was also awarded a gold medal. “We are extremely pleased with this result as this wine was only bottled last month. Wines normally take about six weeks to settle down,” says Gary Neale of Brightwater Vineyard. Brightwater Vineyards entered four wines and was awarded a medal for each of them including a silver medal for their Brightwater Vineyards 2011 Lord Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc. Trophies will be announced at the awards dinner on Saturday September 3. This extends their golden run, having received gold medals for Sauvignon Blanc every vintage for the last seven years. With Nelson shortly to host the Nelson First XV Wine Competition, a trination tasting where the top 15 aromatics from the US, Italy and Nelson will go head to head. These latest results confirm once again that Nelson really is up there with the best of them, says Anna Seifried. Brightwater Playcentre would like to thank Pub Charities for their support in building the new deck. In last week’s On the Brightside, the playcentre incorrectly acknowledged Canterbury Community Trust for the funding, when this was actually received for a different project.

Despite recent reports that local apple growers are in a ‘dire state’ with some facing possible financial ruin, Horticulture NZ’s newest director Julian Raine says there is no need to panic. Julian, a local fruit and berry grower himself, admits that at present there are many growers facing a financially challenging time and says the exchange rates are the main problem; however he remains optimistic about the future of the industry. In 2010 many growers suffered a financial loss and despite markets performing well this year, the high New Zealand dollar will undoubtedly erode export returns resulting in poor financial outcomes again for

Local knitters help keep Moldova warm
Nelson knitters have put their talents to good use, knitting 290 blankets to be sent to children in chilly Moldova, in Eastern Europe. The annual ‘Operation Cover Up’ gets knitters all over New Zealand making blankets, hats, scarves, jerseys, mittens and slippers to send to Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries. Nelson organiser Elaine Borger, of Wakefield, says blankets have been coming in from all over Nelson and this year’s tally is similar to last years. “It’s great to see them all out like this and to see that we are able to use our knitting for good.” The programme is run by Mission without Borders, an interdenominational organisation. Operation Cover Up was started in 2000 by Taupo woman Liz Clark, she heard that children are often very cold in Moldova, with minus 20 degree temperatures in the winter. She rallied around Taupo to get people to knit peggy square blankets for the children. The idea exploded and last year 10,000 blankets were sent to Moldova from New Zealand.

Cadet growers finish training Seven fruit production cadets received their national certificates before their industry peers at the Pipfruit New Zealand Growers and Consultants Technical Seminar last week. Certificates were presented by Kevin Withington, New Zealand Young Fruit Grower of the Year, himself a Hoddy’s Orchard cadet from a few years ago. Kevin says the cadetship was an “excellent platform to launch a career in orcharding.” He also appreciated the time and effort they had put in. Good networks were developed and the full industry support of cadets was a feature of
their training. “Our industry needs skilled young people to become future industry leaders”, says Agriculture New Zealand course tutor Martin White. The qualification was at an advanced trade level, most cadets taking three and a half years to complete This intake of cadets came from larger orchards on the Waimea Plains and Mariri area. Martin says they are key staff for their businesses, being practical, well organised, with a passion for quality fruit production. Two of the cadets began their training at Nayland College.

I want to commend Judene Edgar on expressing her views in the Waimea Weekly. I feel that democracy needs to be respected when views are expressed re this amalgamation issue. I also feel that Tasman District Council, which is the most affected by this takeover, needs to be heard and not labelled as being after only their jobs/ positions. Too often people get into personality fights when it is the issues and viewpoints which need to be discussed and heard. It could lead to the tall poppy syndrome where nobody dares to speak up as their job could be on the line. Local body democracy does not need this, and it is a shame on democracy if we let this happen. C Winslow.

The organisation Destination Nelson Lakes was formed in January 2011. Its’ mission is to promote the Nelson Lakes region as an all season hub for national and international visitors with economical and environmental sustainability and community support at the forefront. With this in mind the committee members, all
who come from a cross section within the community and have a passion for the environment as it is now, have come together to try to improve communications within the community and for visitors, encourage collaboration amongst business owners and improve awareness of what the region has to offer, along with improving service to our visitors and the community. Destination Nelson Lakes has placed a new community notice board at the Alpine General Store in St Arnaud and a more up-to-date website is currently being built. A summer event is being planned to showcase our environment to a broad range of people. Destination Nelson Lakes has more than 30 members who support the mission and vision of Destination Nelson Lakes. The working committee of seven meets once a month and holds open meetings in St Arnaud from time to time. Notice of the open meetings is given in the community newsletter and published in the local newspapers. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss their concerns. General enquiries about the conditions in St Arnaud can be made to the Department of Conservation Nelson Lakes Area Office at St Arnaud who do an excellent job assisting visitors. The DoC office is open 7 days a week. There is also a webcam which shows conditions at the lake. Committee Destination Nelson Lakes.

Mall manager puts faith in security after ‘knife attack’ Richmond Mall manager David Hill has given his vote of confidence in the mall’s security systems following an unprovoked “knife attack” on Thursday afternoon. An 18 year-old male recieved minor cuts to his face and arms following a small altercation near the ATM machines by Farmers where he had previously been eating afternoon tea. Security and police were on the scene soon after the attack with the former actually following the alleged offender out of the mall, says David. The attack occurred around 3:30pm, and thanks to numerous amounts of witnesses the alleged offender, believed to be a 22 year-old male, was arrested within

Just a thought... We were saddened to hear last week of the death of Corporal Doug Grant in Afghanistan. We feel for his wife and children, and for his wider family and his colleagues in his SAS Regiment. From our vantage point many thousands of kilometres away the reasons for our troops being in Afghanistan and in other trouble spots in our world may seem unclear. But actually being there brings the rights and wrongs into much sharper focus.
During my years as an army chaplain I had a bit to do with the recruits that came into the army. They had many reasons for choosing such a career. Adventure, the outdoor life, learning new and often marketable skills, the camaraderie and many new friends they would make were just some. Part of the task of the staff, including us chaplains, was to make more explicit the specific ideals that underpin service in the military and in the police force as well. These ideals

opment Grant. This initiative involves eight $250 grants made over a 12 month period to local individuals or teams to assist in their development, in their chosen sport. An application form is required to be completed and the trust will consider applications at quarterly intervals throughout the 12 month period, the next closing on September 1. The previous sporting grants were awarded to Waimea College brother and sister Laura and Justin Wehner, along with Josh Stove and Blake Homblow of Nelson College. are service to one’s country and putting one’s life on the line if necessary. For Christian people, such ideals are part of our faith. Jesus himself put his life on the line as he challenged the injustice and false ideas of God in his society. He paid the ultimate price, but was wonderfully vindicated by God in new resurrected life. Jesus, in giving his life for others, has inspired countless other people through the ages to do the same. We will probably not be asked to put
our lives on the line in the same way as Jesus, or Corporal Doug Grant and others in the defence force and police. Nevertheless, the ideals that lie behind such service surely commend themselves to every citizen of our country.

It won’t fly without it’s electronics - neither can your health. Chiropractic – Physical or Electronic Award-winning research at Auckland University’s Human Neurophysiology and Rehabilitation laboratory challenges the age-old perception that chiropractors realign bones. Dr Heidi Haavik Taylor, BSc, PhD measured participants’ brain activity before and after chiropractic treatment. Altered messages from the manipulated joints resulted in better muscle function and control by the brain. If a bone is misaligned, it is logical to blame muscle activity. Any therapy focused on treatment of muscles without regard to abnormal brain control is likely to produce short-lived results. “Self-Management” of back problems is limited by the ability to monitor neurological function accurately. To quote Scottish orthopaedic surgeon Gordon Waddell who helped establish the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Clinical Guidelines for the Treatment of Acute Low Back pain: “Failure to restore function means any pain relief will be temporary and reinforces chronic pain.” Clyde’s practice was established in Richmond in 1975. He is an honours graduate from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in the Midwest of the United States, and was involved in electronics in New Zealand for six years prior to his chiropractic studies. His interest in chiropractic was the result of a horse riding accident in his youth and later experiences with his wife’s severe allergies.

Brooks Spreading have been looking after the fertiliser requirements for local farmers, horticulturists and market gardeners for the past eight years and their customer base continues to expand. Mighty Mix Dog Food Company was established in Marlborough where it’s first product,
Livestock Agent Servicing the Murchison, Tapawera, Motueka and Richmond areas
Mighty Mix Frozen Dog Food Concentrate was invented by Christine and Colin Drummond when they were contract mustering on a high country station during the harsh winter of 1992. Concerned by the health of her working dogs in the trying conditions, Christine decided to make them some food herself - using all natural products, and drawing on her background in naturopathy and homeopathy. When her dogs quickly took on a new lease of life on the “mighty mix”, Christine offered it to other musterers in the area and the business took off. Mighty Mix have added three more products to their range – Mighty Mix Large Dog Formula Biscuit, Mighty Mix Family Dog Formula Biscuit and Mighty Mix Nourish Formula Biscuit, meeting the needs of every dog from large breeds, working dogs, family pets, less active dogs and even those who need a little pick me up. To find out more about this fantastic range of dog food, visit their website www.mightymix.co.nz . Of particular interest is the price comparison of Mighty Mix against other leading brands. Orders can be made to local agent Mark Newcombe via the website, by emailing marknewcombeltd@xtra.co.nz or by telephoning 03 522 4272.

Special olympians take court
GOING FOR GOLD: Waimea College girls senior A basketballers Shannon Perrett, Emma O’Rouke, Katie Adamson, Summer Roberts, Hana Wilkinson, Gracie Roberts, Kayla Cross, Gemma Stirling and Kaitlyn Stringer are currently in Palmertson North challenging for national supremacy at the New Zealand Secondary School Basketball Championship. The girls have reached the semi-finals three times in the past four years. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Waimea girls hooping for national glory The Waimea College girls basketball team has a reputation for success, but its current crop of players are hoping to be the golden generation as they target national glory in Palmerston North this week. With three top four finishes in the past four years, the side is the end of a generation with five of the top players all in their final year at Waimea. “They’ve been together since they were year five and six, this isn’t the end of their career but it’s certainly a milestone,” says assistant
coach Gareth Have. Waimea finished third at the South Island tournament which doubled as the national qualifier. Two of the tournament favourites, Fraser Girls’ High School and Mt Albert Grammar School, are both paired with Waimea in pool play. Gareth says the talk in training this week had been about “winning their next eight games,” which of course would see them win the title. “That’s our goal absolutely. We’ve got a lot of talent and a very deep
bench.” Current New Zealand age-grade players Summer Roberts, Shannan Perrett and Hana Wilkinson highlight the Tatjana Zizic-coached side, while Kaitlyn Stringer and Gracie Roberts have both had New Zealand trials. Third place is the highest position Waimea has reached and it’s well within reach this year in Palmerston North. Gareth is doing live broadcasting for the tournament which can be viewed at www.sportswebcasts.com.
A three day basketball tournament and training camp for secondary school aged special olympians is gearing up for another year. The Special Olympics Regional Event held on September 6, 7 and 8 will feature teams from Rosehill College, Allenvale College, Papanui High School, Marlborough Boys’ College and local schools; Salisbury School, Waimea College, Nayland College as well as a Tapawera combined team. Day one will include a training camp taken by former Tall Black Ed Book and a celebrity game of basketball with special olympians Clayton Marr and Dean Skinner involved. Day two is the big showdown with nine teams from the colleges competing in three divisions after a round of skills. One hundred athletes with special needs are expected to take part in the event, nearly double the number that participated last year. The tournament will be held at Waimea College with Saxton Stadium out of use for the Rugby World Cup. Waimea will be the favourite out of the local teams.
Intermediate teams entertain at annaul winter tournament Waimea Intermediate School came away with nine wins from 18 at the annual winter tournament held at Saxton Field on Thursday and Friday, the biggest haul out of all the participating schools. Big wins came from the open boy’s rugby team, the U48kg boy’s rugby team, the boy’s hockey team, the C netball team, the boy’s volleyball team, girl’s volleyball team, rugby sevens, the badminton team and the girl’s football team. Tournament co-ordinator Leslie Smith says the results paid credit to Waimea’s big focus on sport at school. “It’s like it every year,” she says. “We have big numbers here, we’re a school of 590 and we have terrific parent support and terrific staff support for coaching sports. Waimea Old Boys 2011
www.wobrfc.co.nz
Thirds thrash Mot, reach grand final Waimea Old Boys have reached the grand final of the Nelson Bays men’s divison three after putting 60 points past Motueka United at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Waimea Old Boys took the game 60-19, the high score appearing that it was a one sided afar – but it was definitely not the case. A high spirited Motueka pack along with their loyal and vocal support put in a hard hitting game. The first half delivered the majority of the points with the score at the break 40-14 in favour of the red and whites – the scoring was opened by a charge down by the ever present open side flanker of Jason McDonald and finished off by halfback Thomas Bowater. The next period of points came from the boot and pace of second five-eight Josh Rutledge, slotting a brace of penalties then reading a Motueka pass superbly and getting a 65m intercept try which was self converted. Motueka then showed Waimea what happens when you
turn your back when they quickly tapped a free kick to muscle over under the posts. Waimea’s next three tries came from a great team effort – Stephen Waghorn was the man at end of the link in the corner, next was Mike Bates benefiting from a great draw in pass by Chris Harper to dot down. The last try of the half for WOB was set by the forwards, a rolling maul to gain field position then slick back play through the hands topped off by fullback Shane Laurence. But the last play of the first 40 belonged to the ref when he awarded a penalty try to Motueka after WOB where hard on defence and infringed one too many times. The first points of the second half went to big Kane Hart when he used the grunt to grab five points for Waimea just two minutes into the half. Josh continued his impressive day on the scoreboard and made Motueka play for ill discipline by successfully kicking another two penalties.
Motueka hadn’t given up, they created some field position into Waimea territory, and after some solid forward play they were rewarded with a try nine minutes into the half, unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful and this was the end of points opportunities for the visitors. Shane Laurence was again the benefactor of good back play as he notched up his second try out wide for the day. Josh’s impressive points haul was made up of: one try, four conversions and four successful penalties a total of 25 points. The remaining 35 points came in the form of tries to: Shane Laurence (2), Thomas Bowater, Kane Hart, Stephen Waghorn, Mike Bates with one penalty try also awarded to Waimea. Call out to ALL Waimea supporters to be vocal for the Senior Division 3 side a they take on Marist in the grand final this Saturday. The game will be kicking off at 2:30pm at Jubilee Park, Richmond.

10A net important scalp Waimea College 10A kept their Grade 2 final hopes intact when they recorded an important 41–33 win over Stoke Richards Woodhouse on Saturday. The well drilled team have been promoted from Grade 3 and have been playing enterprising netball throughout the season. While Stoke were up to the task and drew both the first and fourth quarters, the college team were superior in the middle stages of the encounter. Stoke started strongly against the classy students and had a little more possession with some great timing, with Kat Soper and Tessa Hancock providing quality ball to their shooters. Shae Gallagher took out the snowboarding with Phil Gothschalk and Ben Godwin-Mathewson equalling for second spot. Julian Probst was the best of the skiers followed by Leo Sandler. Emma Ditzel and Gracie Roberts were staunch in defence as they toiled to apply pressure to the Stoke’s shooters, while Breanna Whiting made an impact when she was introduced at centre at major break. Breanna had presence through court and along with wings Annie Eden and Lucy Ingham had speed to burn. Courtney Zwart and Jessie Matthews also contributed well. Mackenzie Archibald put in a sterling performance at goal attack when she converted an impressive 21 from 25 while Lanessa White rebounded strongly to deny Waimea a second opportunity.
