Fight for Grey Power gets physical The fight to control Grey Power has gotten physical, with supporters of former president Neville Male forcing their way into the association’s office on Saturday and again on Monday morning.

They claimed to be the rightful committee and refused to leave, as did supporters of the Kevin Gardener-led group, which includes office manager Pat Carrick and the executive committee.

After the confrontation on Saturday, po-

lice told both parties to leave and gave the keys to the landlord until 8.30 on Monday morning, when they could prove who the rightful tenant is.

The scene was repeated on Monday morning with police again telling both parties to leave the building until the rightful group could be decided.

Yesterday the national federation stepped into the battle, declaring its support for the Kevin Gardener-led group and saying it

But with the backing of the national federation, it appears the anti-Male faction have won their fight to lead the group, which has around 9000 members in Nelson.

Kevin Gardener didn’t want to comment on the situation, other than to say Grey Power will hold an AGM in April to elect a new executive committee and president.

Funding idea for cycle trail The Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trails Trust will this Thursday ask the Tasman District Council to accept a funding proposal that will allow work to start on the construction of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail between Wakefield and Spooner’s Tunnel. The trust has indicated it can

provide a combination of cash and inkind payments to council that would meet council’s requirements of matching funds for the $300,000 it has allocated for the trail in this year’s budget.

Council will only spend the $300,000 if it receives matching funds from either

central government or another third party. The value of this matching fund is yet to be confirmed by the trust although it wants council to agree to the proposal in principle so it can proceed with finalising the funds and in-kind payments.

Orcas back in our district

Golden Bay Kayak’s Tony Bateup and Lisa Savage had a whale of time when they went out for a paddle off Pohara Beach last Wednesday, enjoying a close encounter with a pod of around “20 or 30” Orca.

Tony says Lisa sighted the Orca at Taupo Point and they swam alongside their surf skis as they headed towards Tata Beach. Although Tony says he has paddled with Orca before, he has never seen so many or got so close as the Orca cruised alongside, swimming in the surf ski’s bow wake.

“It was hard to tell exact numbers because they were coming up all over the place but there had to be at least 20 or 30,” Tony says.

“They came around and stayed for ages too - they’d disappear and you’d think

“One of them swam right alongside the surf ski and rolled on its side and eyeballed me. There were two really big guys - I reckon one of them had a dorsal that was five feet high.”

Department of Conservation ranger, Mike Ogle, says seeing a pod of orca this large is quite significant, as generally pods in the area

contain around six whales.

He says the orca feed off the stingrays and an increase in stingrays is likely the cause for the high number of orca sightings this time of year.

“They seem to come through, hang around for a while and move on.”

He encourages people to enjoy the mammals and be amazed, but advises that there are some regulations around marine mammals.

This is mainly due to boat noise irritating the animals.

Vessels are not permitted within 50m of a marine mammal, and if there are more than three vessels you must stay 300m away.

Swimming is not permitted within 100m.

“Obviously it can’t be helped if they just pop up right beside a boat, but people should not follow or harass the animals.”

Mark says there are only 150200 whales in New Zealand so Tony and Lisa could have seen a good ten per cent of them.

World first: pest butterfly almost gone

Andrew Board Nelson could be on the verge of a world first, by eradicating the great white butterfly from the region.

The project to eradicate the great white butterfly has been run by the Department of Conservation since 2013 in conjunction with a number of agencies, including both councils.

The project has relied heavily on members of the public to inform them of sightings of eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. As a result, there has been just one sighting in the Top of the South since the start of December.

Project manager Mike Shepherd says the big push now is to make sure the butterflies are completely eradicated.

If that’s the case, it will be the first time the butterflies have been successfully eradicated from any region in the world.

“Most countries in Europe and Asia, where there’s a lot of these butterflies, have land borders, so they can’t try to eradicate these kind of pests. But because we’re quite isolated, we can.”

The butterflies cause massive damage to native plants and brassica vegetables and would have had a huge effect on the region’s market garden industry, as well as dairy, beef and sheep farming. The butterfly was restricted to Nelson but would have spread if not contained when it was.

In November 2013, 227 great white butterfly were found in Nelson, compared with just 12 in November 2014. In December 2013, there were 220 detections compared to just one in December 2014.

Martin says the current phase of the programme “Help us get to zero” is a public campaign urging people to hunt down any remaining eggs, caterpillars or butterfly.

Autumn is the time of year the butterflies emerge after remaining dormant in summer.

DOC is urging people to contact them on 0800 800 99 66 if they see any signs of the butterfly, its eggs or caterpillars.

Logging machine shipped to Canada

A revolutionary tree-harvesting machine, that has been developed and manufactured in Nelson, is attracting attention from overseas buyers, with one of the $1.2million machines being exported to Canada this week.

The project was initiated by Kelly Logging’s owner Nigel Kelly almost 10 years ago, after he was concerned that the existing practise of using logging crews to fell and harvest trees on steep slopes was too risky. And this week, the fifth aptly named ClimbMAX rolled off the production line and was exported to Canada where it will be used to harvest trees on Vancouver Island.

Nigel says designing and building ClimbMAX was a collaboration between four Nelson companies.

Kelly Logging initiated the project, Trinder Engineering modified the base machine to become a purposebuilt, winch-assisted tree harvester, Fluid Power Solutions designed the self-regulating hydraulic systems and Rzoska Electrical developed the controlling software system.

“It’s a real Nelson project and everyone has worked very hard to make it happen,” says Nigel.

Kerry says it takes about seven months to build one of the machines, which starts off as a standard 33 tonne Hitachi excavator.

“There’s not too much left of the original machine by the time we’ve finished,” Kerry says. “We change the cab, the boom and arm, and have to integrate all the winch system and a blade into a new undercarriage - there’s nothing else like it anywhere in the world.”

Although ClimbMAX is being used successfully in New Zealand, Nigel predicts the big demand will come from Canada and the US where it is perfectly suited to their logging operations.

School hooks into cycle trail for lessons Brightwater School students are going to be getting on their bikes this term heading out on the Tasman Great Taste Trail to get fit and learn cycle safety.

The cycle trail runs right past the school and principal Gerald Baldwin says they decided to make use of it by taking a group of students cycling every Wednesday. The programme started last Wednesday when 26 students, one teacher and two parents cycled 13km towards Wakefield and back.

“It’s going to be a physical and educational exercise,” Gerald says. “They’ll be out getting some exercise as well as learning cycle safety on the trail away from cars.

“We are also looking at incorporating some sort of curriculum related studies they can do when they are out biking. We could even cycle to Wakefield and Ranzau to join those schools in some sort of activities.”

However, the students on the first ride last Wednesday already had their first educational exercise receiving an unplanned David Attenborough-style nature lesson.

“They saw a cat carrying a dead rabbit across the trail, a hedgehog eating plums and a ram doing his job in a paddock. It was quite an interesting ride for them,” Gerald says.

Gerald says the school is also planning to build a 500m long cycle track through its grounds so they can teach the younger students cycle safety in a super-safe environment. He says the proceeds from the school gala which is being held on March 15 will be used to fund the project.

Nelson nurses helped heal WWI soldiers Monique Bergman

As Anzac Day approaches, the focus will be on those men who fought in World War One, but plenty of women also did more than their share for the cause and many of them were Nelsontrained nurses.

Despite the eagerness of New Zealand nurses to serve in World War One, initially they were not supported by the government, with the New Zealand Crown Law office stating that war was not a place for women.

Meanwhile, the Australian government asked for 12 nurses to join the Australian Army Nursing Services who were soon to depart for Egypt-they left New Zealand on April 1, 1915. Nelson’s Ethel Dement was one of the 12 nurses who arrived in France on April 6, 1916, and she was placed in a British hospital.

wrote from a British hospital “somewhere in France” said: “Tommy is so fine, so cheery in his privations, with the quaintest sayings and antics, and if you could only see them here after having faced death so often you would see another phase of the human, a phase which is new to us who have never faced war before”.

Finally the New Zealand government relented and on April 6, 1915, 110 nurses were officially enlisted in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. During the course of the war, 39 nurses who either trained, were born, or lived in our region, joined the service.

stresses of casualty nursing and the gruelling voyage home. She was a changed woman and a confirmed pacifist, having seen the devastation of war.

She purchased a small house on the Ridgeway in Stoke, where she lived with her sisters. When the Spanish influenza epidemic arrived in Nelson in 1919, she was called in to help nurse Nelson College boys at the infirmary. It was there she met her husband Eric Watkin, a teacher at the college. They married, had two children, and lived in Stoke until her husband secured a teaching position at the Wanganui Technical College in 1930, where she lived until her death in 1956.

Gertrude was awarded a British War Medal for her service in 1921. Servicewomen were welcomed back home and awarded extra decorations, such as the Royal Red Cross.

However, whereas some of their fellow servicemen were given loans and farm land, there was nothing like that for the women who served.

In all, 550 nurses served with the New Zealand Army Service overseas during WWI. If you would like further information on nurses and chaplains who served in WWI, please contact Cheryl Carnahan at the Nelson Genealogy Library.

She grew up on the family farm at Stanley Brook, Tasman, and always wanted to be a nurse but her father didn’t believe she was intelligent enough to qualify, so she was sent to live with her aunts in Nelson and worked as a dress maker.

Gertrude wanted to prove her father wrong and, at the age of 21, enrolled in the nursing course at Nelson Hospital, graduating with honours in 1916. At the time of enlisting in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service she gave her address as Te Rangi Private Hospital, Collingwood St, Nelson.

Her great niece, Janice Brown from Aniseed Valley, recorded Gertrude’s life and recalls her family telling her that while Gertrude stood on the verandah at the hospital, she could hear the guns firing in France and knew that the next train would bring another load of casualties.

Like many of the nurses during this time, she suffered from influenza and was admitted to the General Hospital at Walton on Thames. She left England in September 1919 to travel home and was with the New Zealand Army Service for two years before being discharged on October 1, 1919.

Broken bones run in the family

The McGlashen family’s photo album is expanding by the day to include X-rays of broken bones with both father and son cast in plaster from separate injuries.

In mid-January, two-year-old Connor, was happily playing on a waterslide at a neighbour’s house when he fell, twisting his leg and breaking his femur. His mother, Chanel, received a phone call from the neighbour saying it was probably best to come home from work, as her son had taken a fall.

He was cast in plaster from his chest to his toes on one side and was bedridden for the first two weeks after the accident. It has taken five weeks for Connor to be able to move around again even though he is still in plaster.

Just as Connor was on the improve, his father, Richmond pharmacist, Andrew fell off his dirt bike while riding through forestry trails last week and broke a bone in his hand.

He continued to ride after his fall, until the adrenaline wore off and the pain started to increase. Chanel now has two patients at home and DVDs have played an important part in the recovery process. That is why the family has decided to donate two DVD players to Nel-

“Time can go so slowly in hospital, it meant so much to us for Connor to be able to take his mind off what has happened and watch a DVD,” says Andrew.

Just when they thought there would be no more broken bones, one of Andrew’s staff, Rhonda, phoned to advise she had broken three bones in her foot.

He says that his pharmacy now looks like a warzone with staff hobbling around.

School bands to show their metal A ‘Just Metal’ music concert will be held at The Theatre Royal, next weekend which will feature local college bands including one from Waimea College.

The all age’s event has been organised

by Danny Freilich, Manager of local metal band ‘Legacy of Disorder’. He wanted to give local young bands an opportunity to gain professional live performance experience, as well as providing a safe and affordable event for teenagers to attend.

‘Legacy of Disorder’, who have recorded and toured in the USA, will

headline the concert with supporting bands from Waimea College, Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College and Motueka High School.

Waimea College students Siobhan Lavery, Matt Hammond, Ralph Paxton and Liam Golding, of blended thrash punk and metal band ‘Toxic Vain’, have been rehearsing during school lunch breaks and weekends for the gig. They came together over two years ago having grown up with metal influences such as Black Sabbath, Metallica and Megadeath.

The band who writes their own songs, won the Lowdown Best Song Award at last year’s Rockquest and say they are looking forward to playing a 22minute set of their original material. “It is a great opportunity to get out there, play live and have fun with the other artists,” says band member Ralph.

The ‘Just Metal’ concert, sponsored

When Nelson band, A Month öf Sundays, was formed a year ago they played their first gig at the Reapers Motorbike Club’s Owen River Party.

This year, they are back to play at the event once more in support of child cancer.

Lead singer Brent Thomason describes the band as a “mix of rock and heavy rock,” playing covers of Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crew and Wasps. They also have a couple of original songs.

With regular gigs at the Turf Hotel, as well as events at the Shark Club and Rattle and Hum, the band are quickly becoming a Nelson staple.

Along with Brent, the band includes guitarist Tony Mac, bass guitarist Michael Holmes and Glen Squire on drums.

Just a thought...

I personally like to try different things to simply coffee and chocolate. I once announced to my lecturers at seminary that I would be giving up study for Lent.

They were impressed by my willingness to give something up and to use this as a greater time of preparation. However, my lecturers informed me they wouldn’t be giving up grading during Lent.

As a Christian, I personally struggle with the concept of Lent. The ultimate sacrifice of Christ, and his resurrection are a cause of great celebration for God’s people.

No longer does sin, death and the devil have power over us, but we are called into

Traditionally, Christians around the world prepare through times of prayer, a focus on moving away from behaviours that hurt ourselves or others, and giving up items in our lives - specific foods, entertainment devices etc.

Young professionals to host BBQ in the Vines

Nelson’s young professionals have had a busy start to the new year, both in the office and out of it.

Nelson Young Professionals host a range of events each year and 2015 has already been busy with a mini-seminar been and gone, and the popular BBQ in the Vines being held this Friday, February 27.

President Michelle Byczkow says the BBQ in the Vines is the most popular event on the group’s calendar, after the spring ball. It gives people in the first 15 years of their career the opportunity to spend an evening drinking wine and eating great food with like-minded people, at Kaimira Estate in Brightwater.

The double-decker bus will pick 50 BBQ-goers up from Nelson city, Stoke and Richmond before getting to Kaimira, where a barbeque and wine will keep people fully entertained.

Michelle says it’s such a fun day and they’ve already had strong interest from members, but are keen for non-members to come along as well.

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour continues this weekend with a two day regatta of full-on racing. The Lake Rotoiti Power Boat Club is proud to host the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, the third round of a five series national competition.

The annual event is continually growing and watersport event manager from Acceleration on Water, Denise Preece, says numbers of those coming to watch last year’s regatta were good. “It was pretty spectacular last time and we were really impressed with the number of people who drove up there. It’s not far from Nelson, only a 50 minute or so drive.”

This will be the third time out in the water for drivers, although it’s the first of three rounds for the South Island. The power boat

season kicked off in November last year, with the first round hosted by Wanganui and the second held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge on February 1. After the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, drivers will travel to Hokitika for Easter weekend races and then things will come to a close in Cromwell on Anzac weekend. It’s one of the biggest events on the power boat calendar and will determine who gains the title of 1NZ Champion for 2015. Drivers will be coming from around the country to compete; as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill.

“It’s the third round of our national series and I’m currently sitting on third place on the table,” says locally-based driver and 1NZ champion for 2013, Julian Stilwell. “We were first after the first round so I’m quite

keen to get back up the table. We had a good round last round but it’s quite competitive and quite tough, we’ve got probably seven other guys that are quite capable of winning the round.

The biggest thing at Rotoiti is altitude, it’s a lot higher than most of the other venues we race on, which has quite a lot to do with turning. Formula 1 as a class is becoming quite strong nationwide and this is the closest season we’ve ever had, with the most drivers that we’ve had capable of running at the top. It’s very competitive this season compared to others.”

Waimea College narrowly lost the mixed competition to Golden Bay High School by six games in a count back in the Tasman regional secondary schools tennis competition played in Nelson last Friday Waimea’s Sam Edens and Nayland College’s Oscar Symonds had a tight battle with both players displaying solid serving and plenty of accurate volley and net play before Sam won 9-8. Nayland College’s Sophie Young and Frances Clark of Golden Bay High School also had a long match with Frances winning the third set in a tie break 7-5.

In the girls’ competition, Nelson College for Girls A defeated Marlborough Girls to qualify for the South Island champs to be played in Timaru next month. Marlborough Girls was second and Nelson Girls B third.

Marlborough College A team turned the tables on last year’s result, dominating the boys division and beating Nelson College A team across all singles matches to take the title. Marlborough B was third and Nelson B fourth.

Waimea was one of six teams that competed in the social grade which Sport Tasman’s secondary schools regional sport director Jeni Nunn says gives new players an opportunity to compete against other students in their age group. Motueka High School’s boys’ team won the social grade competition.

Games were played at the Tasman Tennis Centre and Hope Tennis Club.

Crowds flocked to enjoy wine, food, friends, family, fun and music at the Brightwater Wine and Food festival. The weather was perfect with just a slight breeze to keep the temperature down. Being a part of the Fight 4 Victory is a massive personal challenge – that’s no secret. But it’s not just the training that takes some adjustment, the added attention takes just as much getting used to.

The training for Fight 4 Victory has taken over my life to some degree. When I’m not doing it I’m thinking about it or can still feel those stiff muscles as a result of it. All of that I expected.

What I didn’t expect was all the stuff that comes with it – promotional stuff, interest from the public, which may seem a little odd coming from a journalist.

Since it was announced in Waimea Weekly that I’d be fighting Hayden Thompson, there’s been plenty of interest. I’ve had friends of his tell me to make sure I hit him hard, I’ve had friends of his tell me that he will “waste” me. I’ve had his old rugby coach pop into my office to tell me what a grave mistake I’ve made, “he knocked out ten guys in one season”, I was told.

I’ve also had the 11-year-old son of the Weekly’s owner ask me if he can come and watch the fight with his butterfly net, “to catch your teeth as they get knocked out”.

As you can imagine, none of this made me feel particularly chipper.

In pubs, supermarkets, and even down Trafalgar St and in Richmond Mall, I’ve had people come up to me asking how the training is going.

I didn’t expect that. People are genuinely interested and excited about the event. That’s a testament to the success of the original Fight 4 Victory in 2013.

And then there are the radio shows, promotional photos and even this column.

Last week, Hayden and I were invited onto the morning sports show on Newstalk ZB with Murray Leaning and Dave Birdling. It was a bloody good laugh and was the first time I’d seen Hayden since the fight was announced.

We eyed each other up and he told the show’s audience that I could have a career in music after the fight because I would have had “more hits than Elvis”.

And on Friday night we all lined up at McCashin’s Brewery to have our photos taken by Evan Barnes from Shuttersport for the official fight programme.

I’m not used to being on the other side of the camera and all the attention is taking a bit of getting used to.

All the while the training, the relentless training, continues to dominate our lives.

It’s five and a half weeks until the fight and the interest from the public just increases the pressure we feel, which provides plenty of motivation for training.

Wairua Warriors set to race in Nelson There is sure to be plenty of mud, sweat and tears when Nelson’s firstever organised obstacle course race is held at Happy Valley in April.

The Wairua Warrior race is organised by Stoke-based Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club, with help from Sport Tasman. The club, who competed in the Tough Mudder race in Auckland last year, found there weren’t any obstacle course races around our region, so decided to organise one themselves.

The event consists of a 6km race for beginners and a 12km tougher version for more serious competitors. The course over undulating terrain has a range of natural and man-made obstacles involving mud, water, walls, ropes and barbed wire.

Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club President, Greg Witika says the race is designed to be challenging but achievable and has something for everyone.

“All kinds of sports people with different fitness levels can participate in this event, from runners to walkers, to gym goers, there is no other event that puts all different kinds of sports into one”, says Greg.

Anyone over the age of 16 years can compete as an individual or as part of a team and so far they’ve received entries from rugby clubs, local colleges and businesses. It aims to attract around 500 competitors, including a team from Australia.
