Pensioner arrested for arson Grim details are emerging about the arson attacks on forestry blocks between Murchison and Tapawera, including devices used to start them. Last week a man, aged 71, was arrested for the attacks which occurred between February 4 and April 6 this year. It is understood, but not confirmed by Nelson Police or the Rural Fire Network, that the fires were lit with timing devices in different parts of the forest. Firefighters working on one fire had to deal with others starting up around them. Police arrested the man after completing a search warrant with members of the Armed Offenders Squad at a property in the Murchison area last Thursday. Police found automatic weapons, including an AK47 and a large amount of ammunition. The man has been charged with three counts of arson, three offences relating to the unlawful possession of firearms, two charges relating to the possession of a large amount of am-
munition and a charge relating to the possession of cannabis for supply. The arrest comes after a 12 week investigation by police, Nelson Forests Ltd and the Rural Fire Network. Police would not comment on the case as it is now before the courts. Principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says the fire-fighters responded quickly before fires could escalate, limiting the potential damage. A firefighter spoken to by Waimea Weekly refused to talk, saying they had been told to keep details of the case secret, but did say the experience was “very scary”. Because of the multiple fires appearing at different times, Ian says it was a more difficult task for fire-fighters. “It was quite uncertain times for the guys responding, because you weren’t sure what was going to pop up around you,” he says. “We had to protect ourselves.” The man remains in custody until his next court appearance on May 8.

Sanitarium bullies retailer Phillip Rollo
English Bob’s Emporium will no longer sell Weetabix despite huge support from all over New Zealand urging the small business to “stand up and fight” against Sanitarium. Sanitarium threatened Bob Wren with legal action after the English boutique shop owner had been importing and selling Weetabix, an English alternative to the popular breakfast cereal Weet-Bix. Sanitarium then followed up their verbal legal threat with a formal letter demanding contact details of all the people “English Bob” had distributed Weetabix to. The letter also requested Bob removed all of the Weetabix from the shelf, “immediately delivered” the Weetabix to Sanitarium, removed any reference to the cereal on his TradeMe account and named the supplier of his Weetabix. Bob was given until April 27 to comply with their needs or they would “take whatever action” deemed necessary to protect their rights, including legal proceedings. Sanitarium’s general manager Pierre van Heerden told the Waimea Weekly last week selling Weetabix in New Zealand breached a trademark owned by the New Zealand breakfast company because it

Working bee to fix damaged bike tracks Phillip Rollo A local mountain biker has organised a working bee to help fix the damaged biking tracks on the Dellside Reserve in Richmond and he needs your help. Mike Brien, who is also an outdoor education teacher at Waimea College, has been working on fixing bike tracks damaged after severe slippage wrecked some of the area’s most popular spots, following the December floods. Mike says it is going to be a long term pro-
ject to get most of the damaged tracks back to the condition they were in prior to the flooding, but every bit will help. So this Sunday morning he is seeking the help of the community to work on rebuilding the tracks. The Tasman District Council has allowed work to begin on the Loadstone Gully track, so that will be the first port of call over the coming weeks. Mike has already spent eight hours with the shovel himself on the Loadstone Gully track.
“I’ve got three or four people that have already said they’re keen so I’m just putting it out there to the general public to give us a hand and get these tracks back up and running,” says Mike. “Some of them are fairly unrideable at the moment. For example the Loadstone Gully has had huge washout where the creek was and it’s a meter and a half deep. One of the slips is 12 meters across.” TDC will be supplying to large pipes for a culvert and the priority on Sunday’s working bee will be getting those in place.
“Maybe there’s enough people that can work in the slip area, which is not easy to work on. I had to use a rope and a harness initially.” Mike has helped build some of the mountain biking tracks in the area and doesn’t want to see that work go to waste. If you are interested in helping out at the working bee, you can contact Mike on 021 063 3880. It is requested that you meet at the Dellside Reserve on Loadstone Rd, Richmond at 9am. Shovels, rakes, gloves and other equipment are recommended.

Top dogs shine at annual trial
TO THE EDITOR
Regarding your story on Wednesday about the Weet-Bix/Weetabix trademark and bullying legal case; when I came to New Zealand seven years ago I found Weet-bix and figured it was close to my childhood favourite of Weetabix. I have it often, but it is only similar, not the same. I had always assumed that either; Sanitarium had seen the popularity of Weetabix, noticed that it wasn’t on sale here, and decided to cash in by using a slightly different name for a slightly different product (Weet-bix). So as not to have trademark issues or Sanitarium had paid the UK company for the Weetabix rights and the agreement involved a slightly different name and slightly different product. I do occasionally get Weetabix from UK shops in New Zealand, as it is a different product, that I prefer. I get it rarely, as it is expensive as an import. So the story on Wednesday struck me as surprising. How rude of Sanitarium to claim rights over Weetabix, when Weet-Bix is a different product, with a different name, sold in different shops – there are clear differences and no real competition. Such overt bullying and lack of appreciation for the product that inspired their own line makes me less likely to want to buy Sanitarium products. They suggest ‘customers might get confused’. That is as likely as getting confused between Coca-Cola and Pepsi; possible, but not enough to worry about, especially when products are in different shops and at massively different prices (and in different packaging). How dim do Sanitarium think the New Zealand population are?
They say every dog has its day. Unfortunately for the local owners that day belonged to the visitors. The 91st annual Waimea Sheep Dog Trials were held outside Wakefield on Thursday and Friday with more than 40 dog owners entered. The majority of those numbers came from outside Nelson, with Ray Dury and Mike Forsyth showing up the locals. Ray, from Rangiora, took out the long head and the short head and yard divisions with his two dogs Westie and Ted. Rodney Biggs competes in the long Mike, from Seddon, won the zig zag head at the Waimea Sheep Dog Trials. huntaway and the straight huntaway Photo: Phillip Rollo. with his dog Chance.
Golden Bay’s Grant Wylie was the pick of the Nelson competitors finishing as high as third place in the zig zag huntaway with his dog Will. Tapawera’s Eion Herbert was fifth in the short head and yard. But Nelson’s most successful competitor was Rodney Biggs. Rodney had three first places in the maiden catergory, allowing his dogs Jack and May to move onto the intermediate grade at the next competition. A swag of Nelson competitors are likely to enter the Tux South Island and New Zealand Dog Trials held in Wanaka on May 28.

From My Desk What a busy week at Fashion Island, with our talent quest and fashion parade. I am amazed at the incredible talent of the young contestants. From nine year olds singing and dancing to the older teenagers writing their own songs and playing instruments. The Rock Box, Portmans, Dotti, Hartleys, Amazon and Jay Jays put on an incredible show down the catwalk with all shoes provided by Andrea Biani and The Body Shop executed wonders with the makeup. The models looked glamorous and it was a great way to see an array of the winter fashion in our stores. The store I would like to introduce this week is KOOKY. All the designs are cut and styled to look fabulous on a size 8, through to a size 22. Catherine and her team spend time with women, fitting them for special occasions and also casual dress, explaining how to wear the designs properly, what to wear them with, and the characteristics of the fabric. The KOOKY store has such a calm atmosphere, a pleasure to spend time in. Have a fantastic week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Yes - it’s all here: 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, modern kitchen, great garaging and an extra
shed that could make a great stable area. This very sound family home has no close neighbours and the mature trees form a screen from
shed, a logburner on wetback, 2 heatpumps, and a fully fenced section - the front separate from the back, great for kids and pets! Owners have bought elsewhere, so be first to
the road. This would suit a contractor, or a family with lots of gear and animals.

Fire Without Permit have entered the 2012 Smokefreerockquest. They are from left: Rigel Blanchet, Jordan Harvey, Hana Tava, Jacob King and Bowyne Blanchet. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
On a (rock)quest The school holidays weren’t all about sleeping in and playing Xbox. Four of the five members from high school band Fire Without Permit spent the first three months together doing enough of that. But with two weeks off school, the now five piece pop rock band was busy practicing ahead of next month’s regional Smokefreerockquest heats. Fire Without Permit, a band named after a sign on the road, consists of 12 year old Hana Tava on vocals, Nelson College twins Rigel and Bowyne Blan-
chet and Waimea College duo Jordan Harvey and Jacob King, all 14. They all met through their music teacher and decided to form a band. Nelson heats will be held on Friday May 11, before the regional final just one week later. So fine tuning their catchy two originals, Love and Inspiration and You Can’t Fool Me, over the holiday period was paramount. Because the twins go to Nelson College, finding time to practice usually has to happen on the weekend.
Fire Without Permit first started two years ago, under the name Forever Without. Rigel says it was probably because they were forever without a lead singer. That was until Hana came along. So how did the new name Fire Without Permit come about? “We were being rebellious in national parks. Nah in all seriousness we had a period when we were looking for names. There was a sign as we were driving through Brightwater and Mum was like ‘Fire Without Permit’ and it just stuck,” says Jacob.

WHK Richmond Celebrates Milestone and introduces new Principal, Andrew Smith
Twenty years is a long time for any business to survive, and it seems an appropriate achievement for a firm whose role is to help other businesses prosper. Chartered accounting firm WHK in Richmond began its life as Hintons. Over the years, the name and location has changed, but staff are helping a lot of the same clients, two decades later. Assisting individuals and business owners achieve success is a privilege not lost on WHK principal, Andrew Smith. “Helping people identify and achieve their goals is hugely gratifying. Our aim is to see our client’s businesses develop and grow. We have significant experience and a proven track record in assisting small to medium businesses and understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the owners.” Andrew became the new principal in WHK’s Richmond office late last year. He grew up in Nelson and has been a chartered accountant for 17 years, working in New Zealand and around the world in various roles. Most recently, he was chief financial officer at Unimar Limited here in Nelson and Andrew also has experience in London’s banking and finance sector and managing significant accounting and information system projects in Malaysia. Andrew has strong commercial acumen together with operational management skills and provides clients with a wide range of advice including strategic and business planning, business growth, governance and risk management, financial reporting and forecasting, and buying and selling businesses. Existing clients are already benefiting from Andrew’s commercial experience across a wide range of industries. Andrew says his transition into the role has been helped by a talented and experienced accounting team. Associate principal Jill Vollmer, and senior manager Brent Cheyne have been working for the firm for more than 14 years. Despite retiring from full time work, Alan Hinton, founding partner, also remains working as a consultant.
“I’m really proud of the team, their expertise and the long standing relationships they have developed with our clients. We value their loyalty highly and it’s crucial that our clients have the confidence in us to get the job done right.” The office also has a big advantage over other accounting firms in the area in terms of having specialist resources available locally and around New Zealand and in Australia. Mark Davies, WHK principal, runs the only specialist tax team in the top of the south and has over 20 years experience in the tax industry. Clients enjoy the advantage of meeting with their tax specialist face to face ensuring the best possible outcomes are achieved. Business growth manager, Paul Rosanowski, works alongside the clients, helping them develop and grow their businesses. Sometimes managers and owners are so close to their business it’s hard to get perspective. Paul provides mentoring and advice to ensure clients achieve their goals. WHK is now an approved partner in the NZTE Capability Development Voucher programme which allows small and medium sized businesses to grow management expertise through WHK training programmes for groups or individual businesses at a discount of up to 50%. Businesses often find it hard to justify the investment required to outsource strategic planning and advice so this provides an invaluable opportunity at a discounted price. If you’d like increased business or personal wealth, call Andrew Smith, WHK principal, on 03 543 9144, or drop by for a no obligation chat with one of the Richmond team.

Simon is a qualified tradesman more familiar with working with his hands than numbers, but WHK staff have made his accounts easy to understand and he finds visits a pleasure. “Andrew is extremely good. I relate to him really well and he relates to my staff and that is important to me. I’m a very practical thinker and work with my gut feeling a lot and to find someone that understands my style, which obviously works really well for us.” Aside from doing Jennian Homes’ annual returns and strategic planning, WHK’s tax team has been able to help Simon with specialist advice around company
restructuring which he has found invaluable. “Andrew’s got a good head for day to day business and when we start talking about particular areas it’s always nice when they can bring in a specialist who knows that field. You feel comfortable making those decisions when you’ve got good people around you.” “To be honest, the WHK staff I’ve had to deal with over the years have all been extremely professional. They come to everything with a really positive attitude and there’s always a lot of seminars and support for business people. As a company they seem really proactive about growing peoples’ businesses. I can highly recommend them.” Advt.

With Robyn Hollis
Wow! Autumn in Nelson would have to be one of the best times of the year. Cool mornings and evenings, beautiful sunny, warm days and not much wind. Autumn to me is the best time for planting and a great time to spend in the garden cleaning, tidying and generally enjoying getting ready for the next season. The photo this week is of the early flowering camellia sasanqua “setugeka”. This one is in my garden but I love seeing these come into flower down the railway reserve. They make a colourful statement of spring-like colour amidst the autumn leaves. Mainly in colours of red, white and pinks they are normally smaller in leaf than their japonica cousins, and the flowers are mainly single petalled. “setugeka” is my favourite with the flower reminding me of a poached egg, but “hiryu”, “mine-no-yuki” and “plantation pink” are all readily available and popular for the smaller garden. “yuletide” is a really delightful small sasanqua camellia that is well suited to container growing if you don’t have garden space. It has a bright red flower
but be warned, it does take time to grow. They all have a tidy habit and with their glossy green leaves, look good all year round.
Tips
Thisks wee
• Now is the time to freshen up pots and tubs that may be past their best. Take out the old plants when finished and also take about a 1/3 of the mix from the pots. Add a couple of handfuls of sheep pellets and top up with fresh potting mix. • You are now ready to fill these with the 3 p’s and a v! pansies, polyanthus, primulas and violas for the pots and of course poppies and calendulas for the garden. • Keep feeding your pots with a liquid food such as Thrive, Powerfeed, Biogold, etc. • Prepare you soil well for your garden planting of annuals by mixing in some well rotted compost and sheep pellets and ensuring your drainage is good. Apply a general garden fertilizer to the top 10cms before planting and then with your first watering in a dose of Seasol is a good idea to help strengthen the roots. • Handle plants carefully when planting out, do not crush the stems and only plant them to the same depth as they were in the containers. • Space as recommended on the label- planting closer can result in leggy plants. • Water immediately after planting and reading p /s g 2-3 times a week if needed until estabin w e, so blo roblem ible hos p x a e t fl o lished. f n o here is 0m plus ost anyw d with 6 e lm p a ip ll u e • Looking around my garden the hostas q h wer is e st, soil, s
are starting to die back now so it is a good idea to take off the old leaves as mealy bug and aphids like to live under them. Same goes for the old leaves of the hellebores (winter roses) – and although fallen leaves can make a good mulch it is a good idea to move them from garden beds and put them in a pile to rot down as they will only harbour slugs, snails and other pests if left on the garden.
Q& A Q: We have just moved into a house with a lovely kiwifruit vine. It is covered in fruit but they are all really hard although they are starting to drop off. We have tried a couple but they are very bitter. Will the fruit ripen and how can we assist it? A: Kiwifruit is normally picked “green” and held in cold storage. Fruit that is not chilled will ripen gradually over a few weeks but to speed up the process you can put it into a plastic bag – about a dozen at a time- with an apple enclosed. This should advance the ripening process by 2-3 weeks and give good edible fruit. Not a question but an interesting conversation and tip, from the horses (or in this case the fishes) mouth, as relates to the dreaded “whitefly”. David from Waitapu Gardens in Takaka says he has found a cure. He uses a spray with salmon oil as the base ingredient. You only need a small amount so use according to the directions and spray sparingly. He has also noticed that the leaves on his tomatoes are stronger and the plants healthier overall. To get this wonder spray I can only suggest you contact CRT in Richmond as I do not have a name. Until next time……….

a previous injury. Signs of possible arthritis include stiffness – especially on rising after rest, reluctance to run or jump, restlessness, especially at night and yelping when pressure is put on a joint. Your vet will be able to confirm if your pet has arthritis and can suggest some treatments to help your pet. There are quite a variety of medications which your vet could prescribe, including natural therapies, that will reduce inflammation in joints and slow the programme of arthritic changes to the joint surface. Ways you can help are to give your pet a padded bed to sleep on and a warm place to sleep in the winter and maybe a coat to keep the joints warm. Slippery floors provide a challenge to sore joints where the muscle tone has reduced and their legs slide away from beneath them – putting mats on slippery floors can help, or just avoid these areas altogether. Monitor body weight as reduced activity can often cause weight gain which further hampers mobility and puts strain on joints. Our nurses can design a weight loss program if necessary for individual pets. Frequent short walks keep mobility optimised. Avoid long or strenuous runs. Hydrotherapy is a good way to keep up the muscle strength and your vet may recommend this as a treatment option. Call now to make an appointment with the team at Town and Country Vets on 544 1200 and see what options are available for your pet this winter.

Richmond Rabbits run riot Phillip Rollo The Richmond Rabbits scored 12 unanswered tries to give them early bragging rights over neighbours Wanderers Wolves. The 62-0 thrashing is the Stables Richmond Rabbits’ biggest win of the Smokefree Bin Inn Cup season. Richmond has lost just one game this season. Cam Salton and Lucas Bennett were two of the top performers for the Rabbits with Cam scoring four tries himself, following some grunt work from the two props. Dane Saina and Callum Smith also chipped in with two tries a piece. Wanderers were not helped by an early injury to star back Ethan Cooper, but the impressive team performance should have many of the Rabbits pencilled in for higher honours when the Town Stables Richmond Rabbits fullback Cam Salton shrugs off the v Country teams are named in tackle from his opposite during Saturday’s 62-0 victory over July. the Wanderers Wolves at Ngawhatu. On the eve of leaving to work in Australia, Nelson racer Ashley Kelly has won the Nelson Ruff ’n’Tuff endurance race, the first South Island round of the 2012 Mickey Thompson New Zealand Offroad Racing Championship. Ashley, a longtime offroad racer, now finds himself torn between work opportunities in Australia and the lure of a championship title and must weigh the two over coming weeks. With fastest time in qualifying for the 192 km event and a flag to flag victory under Nelson driver Nevile Taylor in action over the his belt, Ashley is well weekend. He finished second in his class. Defending champions Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro will be confident to register the first win of the netball season when they take on bottom seed Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers A. Richmond were reasonably happy with their overall performance at the recent Geraldine Hodgson Tournament – with some good and some not so good patches. Being top seed, Richmond will face the lower ranked teams in the opening rounds. Richmond have a wealth of talent and experience in all areas of the court with Nicky Rampton and Kathleen Thornalley anchoring the offensive end. Richmond have lost Moana Forbes to Jacks OPD however, they still have a classy mid court with Kat Jones, Lisa Book, Belinda Kolomatangi and Sharon Finch. Nayland College’s Breanna Joyes will dual register to pro-
vide another option in the mid court. Wanderers are a totally new team and will have New Zealand Mens representative, Jared Lock at the helm. The shooting duties will be shared between Jordan Dennehy, Poroani Stephens and dual registered Nelson College player Shevaun Collier. Both Jordan and Shevaun have had experience in the premier grade for their college teams last season. Wanderers will be looking to establish combinations while endeavouring to play good, basic netball. Waimea College have only three players remaining from last year’s squad. Coach Faye Eden has a well balanced team with four year 12 and four year 13 players along with two year 11 students. The talented Ella Marwick will shoulder a hefty workload through the mid court.

The objective of the Service is to improve the quality of life of residents in aged care facilities who have limited family and social contact. A Community Visitor befriends a resident of an aged care facility, who has been identified by the facility, as being lonely or at risk of isolation.

Notice of Intention to Change of Reserve Classifications
Important Reminder to all Water Permit Consent Holders subject to Water Meter Returns
Parts of Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation Reserves Pursuant to Section 24 of the Reserves Act 1977, the Tasman District Council gives notice of its intention to change the classification of portions of the Tapawera and Brightwater Recreation Reserves. The affected portions of the respective reserves are utilised for the following activities: Tapawera Recreation Reserve – Toy Library, and Playcentre Brightwater Recreation Reserve – Pinegrove Kindergarten It is considered desirable to change the classifications of the relevant portions of the reserves from Recreation Reserve to Local Purpose (Community Buildings) Reserves. This will more correctly align the current uses of the reserves to a more appropriate reserve classification. The intention is to have current uses reflected in the reserve classifications. This process is essentially an administrative action and there is no intention to change any current activities on these reserves. Recreation uses on these reserves will continue as they do now, and those portions of the reserves will retain Recreation Reserve status. Some car parking areas will be included in the change of classification process, but the car parks will remain available for all reserve users, as they are now. The change of classification for the Brightwater Reserve will be slightly larger than the land occupied by the Kindergarten at present. This is partly to minimise survey costs and partly to provide for potential expansion. For plans of the portions of the reserves intended for changes of classification, and to make further enquiries, please contact Robert Cant at Tasman District Council – robert.cant@tasman. govt.nz, Ph. 03 543 8400. Submissions or objections on the proposed classification changes should be made in writing, to the address below, and must be received no later than 4.00 pm on Monday 28 May 2012. Council’s Compliance Officer, Daryl Page, reminds consent holders that the requirement for water meter returns runs until Monday 30 April 2012. Daryl advises that if you cease water use before 30 April 2012 you must tell Council and this can be used as your final reading for the season. Only then can the requirement for further returns be removed. Otherwise, returns are required by 4.00 pm Wednesday. Missing or late returns may result in Council staff reading the meter at a cost to the consent holder of $200.00. Council takes this opportunity to thank those consent holders who make their returns on time. Accurate and timely water meter returns are key components of the water metering project.
