New village worth $100M to region Summerset is planning to develop a retirement village near Richmond that will become home to around 400 people. The village will be made up of approximately 280 retirement units with a mix of villas, townhouses and serviced apartments on Hill St North. There will also be a care centre which will include rest home, hospital and dementia care. Summerset has purchased an eight hectare property at the end of Hill St North for the development. It already has a village in Nelson, located in Stoke. “We’re excited to be bringing one of our retirement

communities to the very desirable Richmond area, and to the wider Nelson region,” Summerset chief executive Julian Cook says. “Richmond has a great climate, outdoor attractions and wineries, plus it’s also one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand.” Julian says Summerset’s Stoke village is their largest to date and “one of our fastest growing”. The new village near Richmond will bring over $100million investment into the region, as well as create employment opportunities, he says. Julian says Summerset has not yet decided on a timeline for the development.

WOB rack up big win

The Richmond Aquatic Centre wave pool is likely to be re-opened by the middle of next month after contractors finish repairing a leak and complete maintenance on the pool. Centre manager Vaughan Hope says the 470 cubic metre pool was pumped out after a leak was de-

tected last month. Vaughan says emptying the pool is a major undertaking so it made sense to bring forward maintenance work on the pool that had been scheduled for later in the year. “It takes a long time to empty the pool because we have to remove the chlorine and cool it down to sub-20 degrees, which takes two or three days, before we pump it out.

We had the maintenance scheduled anyway so we decided to do it now since we had the pool empty.” Vaughan says contractors have been working almost around the clock to replace faulty tiles, repair expansion joints, service the wave chamber and clean the pool. The Wave Rave will still run every Friday with the entry reduced to $5 until the wave pool reopens.
