New village worth $100M to region Summerset is planning to develop a retirement village near Richmond that will become home to around 400 people. The village will be made up of approximately 280 retirement units with a mix of villas, townhouses and serviced apartments on Hill St North. There will also be a care centre which will include rest home, hospital and dementia care. Summerset has purchased an eight hectare property at the end of Hill St North for the development. It already has a village in Nelson, located in Stoke. “We’re excited to be bringing one of our retirement
communities to the very desirable Richmond area, and to the wider Nelson region,” Summerset chief executive Julian Cook says. “Richmond has a great climate, outdoor attractions and wineries, plus it’s also one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand.” Julian says Summerset’s Stoke village is their largest to date and “one of our fastest growing”. The new village near Richmond will bring over $100million investment into the region, as well as create employment opportunities, he says. Julian says Summerset has not yet decided on a timeline for the development.

WOB rack up big win
The Richmond Aquatic Centre wave pool is likely to be re-opened by the middle of next month after contractors finish repairing a leak and complete maintenance on the pool. Centre manager Vaughan Hope says the 470 cubic metre pool was pumped out after a leak was de-
tected last month. Vaughan says emptying the pool is a major undertaking so it made sense to bring forward maintenance work on the pool that had been scheduled for later in the year. “It takes a long time to empty the pool because we have to remove the chlorine and cool it down to sub-20 degrees, which takes two or three days, before we pump it out.
We had the maintenance scheduled anyway so we decided to do it now since we had the pool empty.” Vaughan says contractors have been working almost around the clock to replace faulty tiles, repair expansion joints, service the wave chamber and clean the pool. The Wave Rave will still run every Friday with the entry reduced to $5 until the wave pool reopens.

“Yes, piano, initially it was because I was forced to. [School bands] didn’t really exist in my day, I was in the choir, but I wasn’t good enough at the piano to be in the orchestra.”
“I play a little bit of guitar and I bang the drums a bit. I was part of a band when I was in intermediate. We had a couple of performances at local primary schools.”
Pauline Marshall, Brightwater. “I learnt the piano when I was younger but I don’t play it now I’m afraid. I did enjoy it but I didn’t practice it enough.”
Allan James, Murchison. “No, I’ve got two left feet when it comes to that. My mother tried to teach me to play the piano, she was a great pianist but I was too busy.”
Queen St upgrade delayed A modernised Queen St will feature two new water fountains, three zebra crossings, 35-40 new specimen trees, modern public seating and new LED street lighting, when the $9.5 million redevelopment of Richmond’s main street is completed. Tasman District Council is planning to dig up and reinstate Queen St as part of a project to improve flood protection in the centre of town. The main part of the project, which involves lowering the centre of the street and replacing the ageing stormwater system, was scheduled to start in August but a report to council this week states that it has now been delayed until February next year. The report states that the reinstatement of Queen St from shop

front to shop front provides the opportunity to enhance the safety, accessibility and functionality of the street. A design plan shows the main components of the street including bus stops, pedestrian crossings, car parking and surface materials. It states that the existing raised crossings will be replaced with three zebra crossings located at the Richmond Mall entrance, Sundial Square and the Public Library. There will also be two new water fountains, one each outside the Richmond Library and Pat’s Plaza, and 35-40 new specimen
trees. The street’s asphalt surface will be bordered by two 700mm wide buffer zones constructed of exposed aggregate to clearly delineate between the footpath and carriageway. There will be one bus stop outside the Richmond Mall entrance and a double length bus stop in the area of the Noel Leeming and the Arthur Wakefield. The report says the new design for Queen St is intended to be pedestrian and cycle-friendly while allowing for vehicle access. It will encourage delivery and courier services to use the rear of shops and car parks backing onto Queen St. The report explains that the major works to replace pipework in the traffic lane, reshape the road
and resurface footpaths will not start until February 2017. The majority of the work will be carried out through a box construction followed by footpath reinstatement. Footpath access will remain open for pedestrians while the box is in place but traffic will be detoured away from the box section while remaining open along other parts of Queen St. The council’s staff are working with Richmond Unlimited representatives to provide input for construction and communications to help minimise the impact to businesses during construction. Public safety and access for emergency services will be a priority while public access to existing businesses will be retained.

Fresh push for Rabbit Island rowing course

The idea of a rowing course at Rabbit Island is being refloated by Nelson Rowing Club captain Tim Babbage. Tim is keen to see a purposebuilt rowing course that would be capable of hosting the Maadi Cup national secondary school rowing regatta in 10 years time. The 2km course has been brought to Tasman District Council in the past, without success. Tim says it would be not just for rowing but also triathlon and water-skiing. “It’s been on the radar and it’s been off the radar,” Tim says. “It would be great for us but it would be great all-round for water sport.” The current plan would have it in The Traverse, which is sheltered from trees and goes against the prevailing breeze which means the course will be sheltered from the wind which can delay racing The Maadi Cup is a week-long regatta which attracts 2500 competitors and 1500 support staff, as well as 10,000 spectators for the two finals days. Tim estimated that would mean the Tasman region would benefit from 50,000 bed nights.

The Traverse, in between Rabbit Island on the left and Rough Island on the right, would be the perfect place for a rowing course. Photo: Toby Harvey/Eagle Imaging. The Maadi Cup is held in the North Island and South Island on alternate years. Lake Karapiro near Cambridge hosts the North Island event and Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel hosts the South Island version. Tim says a Nelson course could host it every four years initially and he believes it would have the backing of secondary schools because of Nelson’s location, especially with the challenges of getting to Lake Ruataniwha. “Obviously, within rowing this move would be quite contentious because the South Island Rowing Asso-
ciation owns facilities and surrounds of Lake Ruataniwha. “Twizel is a challenging place to get to and yet 10,000 people turn up there, so imagine how many would come if the event was in Nelson?” Tasman District Council communications advisor Chris Choat says any groups with suggestions like this are encouraged to submit it for consideration now for the Rabbit Island Draft Reserve Management Plan. Nelson Weekly understands the working group driving the rowing course idea will put forward a submission.

Golden Downs Golf Club will be featured on Sky Television’s Holden Golf World on June 8 following a spruce-up for their clubhouse. The nine-hole course set in forest in Golden Downs won the Sky TV competition for $1000 worth of Resene paint after they submitted ideas of how they would like their run-down club house to look, should they win the prize. Presenter Laura McGoldrick, who fronts the show, even flew in and lent a hand with a paint brush and then teed-off on New Zealand’s longest hole. Laura described the course as “beautiful” and somewhere she would like

The “Kiwi Clubhouse Makeover” allowed the club to paint a large part of the building, introducing a new charcoal colour scheme and new signage. President Gary Oldham says the opportunity had revitalised the club into spending more time trying to update the facilities beyond the fairways and greens. “The building was pretty tired and this is a godsend for us. “This opportunity will give us a new lease on life.” More than 50 people turned out to help including most of the 48 members at the club.

Holden Golf Show producer Stephen Baker says Golden Downs was one of three golf clubs from around New Zealand to be featured with the makeover. “This is what New Zealand golf is all about,” he says. “Golden Downs fits the mould perfectly with their can-do attitude and countless volunteers, these are the courses where a young kid could fall in love with the game and in 20 years time, be on the PGA Tour.” Club member Trevor Timpson played the club’s feature hole – the longest par 5 in the southern hemisphere – alongside McGoldrick. He says the club survives on voluntary input and described Sunday as the biggest day in the club’s recent history.

Business owners could be deported by Friday Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A family’s dream move to Nelson could have an abrupt end this Friday when they are scheduled to be deported from the country. Steve and Gail Webster moved to Nelson from the United Kingdom in 2012 with their two teenage daughters. But the “dream move” is turning into a nightmare after they invested their life savings into buying a local business and building new lives, only to be denied residency. “We’re a good part of the community, good-hard working people. We’re not millionaires who will build a factory and employ 1000 people – I wish I could – we’re just little people who really want to live here,” says Steve. The family were granted an interim visa last November, three years after they arrived in the country on a business visa, but had their bid for permanent residency turned
down in early April. Among the reasons was because they hadn’t employed a full time New Zealander after three years in business and hadn’t met growth goals. The couple say the business they bought, Earthbloom, wasn’t as good as it appeared in the books and it took them two years to work it back from the brink. Gail says the business has “turned a corner”, but that it wasn’t a big enough corner. “And that’s pretty hard to hear.” Last week the Websters had their bid for a temporary visa delayed, meaning that if another last-ditch attempt for a temporary visa this week is unsuccessful then they will have to leave the country on Friday. Steve is employed at Bowater Toyota, is a volunteer fire fighter and Earthbloom employs a part-time staff member. They say they feel gutted and are uncertain about what lies ahead. “We have no idea what our life is like past next Friday and it’s scary,” says Steve.
In an ideal world, the Websters would get an interim visa this week and be allowed to appeal their declined bid for residency – which will almost certainly fail. They can then resubmit their application for residency having met its business goals, which they feel they are on track to do. But it all hinges on getting a temporary visa this week. The Websters have already applied for holiday visas to Australia in case they have to leave on Friday. “As of right now, we have been ordered to leave New Zealand by Friday or we are liable to being arrested, incarcerated and deported. We’ve got to hop out of the country and they may not let us back in. So we’ve got a business that will just collapse, all our life savings will be lost because we won’t be able to sell it in six weeks,” says Steve. “We just want some common sense on this.” The Websters are hoping their last-ditch efforts will be enough to keep them in the country they love.

Higgins axes jobs in Nelson
Popular house goes up in flames
Simon Bloomberg Twelve jobs have been cut at the Nelson branch of Higgins Contracting in a “restructure to ensure on-going profit requirements” and one of the axed workers suspects there are more job losses on the horizon. The nationwide civil construction company employs 50 staff at its Beach Rd headquarters in Richmond but last week the Weekly learned that 12 of those jobs had been axed. In a statement, a Higgins spokesperson said the company had been consulting with staff about a restructure and that a “small percentage” of the staff would lose their jobs in Nelson. The spokesperson said the cuts were aimed at ensuring the the branch’s resources were in line with the demand for work so the business could “ensure on-going profit requirements”. They said company was working with staff to try and find suitable employment “elsewhere” with Higgins. One of the workers who lost their job, Allan Hoult says there were only limited opportunities for employment at other Higgins’ branches and that those opportunities depended on your qualifications”. “A couple of guys are going to Palmerston North and one went to Christchurch but that depended on your qualifications. I’ve also been in Nelson all my life so I have no interest in moving out of the district.” Allan says he wasn’t aware of the number of staff made redundant because the company held individual negotiations. However, Allan says Higgins told all the 49 staff, at the initial meeting, that they needed to get down to 25 staff “so I suspect this may not be the end of it”. Allan says he was also disappointed at the way redundancies were managed. “I know there are not too many jobs with redundancy clauses these days but we were just told ‘you’ve lost your job grab a case of beer off the back of the ute on the way out’. “I’ve been there three and half years so I thought that was disappointing. It’s bad timing too because my wife was made redundant just before Christmas. “I’ll be hitting the streets to try and find work because we’ve still got the bills to pay. I’m not going to be sitting around - it’s onwards and upwards.”

A derelict, century-old farmhouse that has been an irresistible attraction to thousands of photographers and wedding planners over the years has been razed from the Appleby landscape. The house, believed to have been built in either the late 1800s or early 1900s, was burned to ground in a controlled fire on Saturday. Property owner Robert Morrison had been

Tasman’s head coach Richard Anderson rated Coey as one of the top keepers in last year’s competition and says it was vital to get Coey on board early. “We believe Coey to be one of the stand out goalkeepers in the league, and he also has a great deal of potential to tap into. It is not an understatement when I say I believe he can become the outstanding goalkeeper within the competition.”

Nelson fraudster denied Supreme Court bid: A Nelson fraudster who stole $500,000 from clients in his investment advisory business has been denied the chance to take his case to the Supreme Court. Tony Mount is serving a six-year jail sentence after being found guilty of 75 fraud-related charges, including theft by a person in a special relationship and obtaining by deception. The former investment adviser was today denied leave to appeal to the Supreme Court. Mount’s proposed appeal focused on his claim that his fair trial rights were breached because he didn’t have a lawyer. “The proposed appeal does not raise any issues of public or general importance… there is no appearance of a miscarriage of justice,” says the Supreme Court.

Panama company owns $2.3M in Nelson property Andrew Board A Panama company, owned by a wealthy European shipping family, owns land in Nelson worth $2.3 million, Waimea Weekly has discovered. Four plots of land on Walters Bluff, totalling almost 11 hectares, is owned by Syra International Financing Company SA. The current government valuation on the land is $2,330,000. The company was set up by Panamanian law firm Icaza, González-Ruiz & Alemán. It was another law firm, Mossack Fonseca, whose records were hacked and released as part of the Panama Papers scandal, which has highlighted how the world’s richest people dodge tax around the world. Four hundred journalists from around the world worked on the so-called Panama Papers, which showed that New Zealand was among the countries used by wealthy foreigners to avoid tax in their own country. Syra is controlled by Swiss brothers Giovanni and Paolo Albertini, along with Giovanni’s son Alexandre. The family owns Marfin Management SAM which owns a shipping container company based in Monaco, on the Mediterranean.

Four blocks of land on Walter’s Bluff are owned by a Panamanian company. Photo: Toby Harvey/Eagle Imaging. According to Open Corporates, a UKbased website that collects information on companies around the world, Syra was founded on September 8, 1978 two days after two other firms also owned by the family were created – Chios International Financing Company SA and Andros International Financing Company SA. Another company owned by the family, Compania Naviera Marfin SA [Marfin
Shipping Company], was founded in 1947, also in Panama. Local accountants and lawyers spoken to by Nelson Weekly say it is unusual to have a Panamanian company owning land in Nelson and that it is likely an effort in “tax minimization”. The practice isn’t illegal but it is most likely done in an effort to use New Zealand’s tax system to avoid paying higher tax in their own country.

Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre’s Claire Delaney wants people to join in the Race to Rio. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Locals urged to join Nelson to Rio in 82 days Simon Bloomberg Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre staff are helping people get to the Rio Olympics one small step, lift, stroke and pedal at a time. The countdown to the Rio Olympics has started and the Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre is running a promotion aimed at encouraging its members and regular users to get fit and have fun leading up to the games. Individuals or teams gain points for a range of activities with the winner being the first to accumulate 11,897 points which is the distance in kilometres from Nelson to
Rio. Gym manager Claire Delaney says they already have around 40 people entered in the challenge which started on May 16 and lasts 82 days. Teams and individuals have been logging points online for activities that include swimming, running, walking, gym sessions and biking and their progress is being charted on a display outside the gym. “We sat down and worked out how many points we’d give for each activity to try and make it achievable for everyone,” Claire says. “But you need to average 145 points a day to make it to Rio before the games start.”
Although Claire says the activities are designed to showcase the centre’s range of facilities, there are also some curve balls thrown into the promotion. There are points for stacking firewood and mowing the lawns although photographic evidence is required - a video of individuals or teams doing the centre’s Workout of the Week is the biggest points-scorer at 50. Claire says there will be lots of prizes for the winning individuals and teams and prizes just for competing. People can sign up for the Race to Rio Distance Challenge at the Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre at 161 Salisbury Rd.

Native fish the centre of attention in Richmond Jessie Johnston They may not be as obvious as our native birds and vegetation, but New Zealand’s streams and their migratory inhabitants are still an important part of our ecology that need protecting, say the organisers of World Fish Migration Day in Nelson. World Fish Migration Day is a global celebration, creating awareness of the importance of fish passages and migratory fish. The Tasman region officially opened this year’s event to the world on Saturday, with an educational day at the former dam site on Richmond’s Reservoir Creek. Organisers estimate around 100 people visited throughout the day, witnessing demonstrations of remediated fish passages, enjoying children’s activities and learning from council’s resource scientist, Trevor James, about the many species of native fish who rely on migration to complete their life cycle. Around 75 per cent of the fish passage barriers in the Tasman district are overhanging culverts, rather than dams or weirs which make up the other 25 per cent. Whether it’s
an overhang of a few mils, or eight to ten metres, fish are unable to continue their journey through the culvert, which is why Trevor is involved with fixing these structures during yearly campaigns, creating a pathway for the fish using conveyor belt material and mussel spat rope. This allows fish to either use their wide, flat fins to suction on to the surface and walk up into the culvert, or wriggle up in between the ropes, a strategy used by fish like the inanga. “I’m so happy that so many people turned out to learn about our native fish. They are shy creatures, but when people see a native fish and they understand more about them, they care more for them. Because most of our native fish are nocturnal, it’s out of sight, out of mind, very little is known about them, whereas the birds are a much more readily identifiable thing,” says Trevor. The top of the south has 20 species of native fish with all but three of those species needing to migrate up and down our waterways to the sea. These include eel, whitebait, bullies, torrentfish, lamprey and common smelt.

Jessie Johnston It was a night to remember for Garin College band Motion, as they took out the Nelson regional final of Smokefreerockquest on Friday night. “We’re absolutely chuffed, the boys absolutely outdid themselves,” says the band's front man, Kieran O’Connor. “What a night, the crowd was fantastic, it’s a night where you just realise why you do music. I’m proud of the boys and very thankful to be where we are right now.” The four-piece band, including Sotaro Kawada, drums, Caleb Binns, keyboard and Carl Gillan, guitar and vocals, now has the opportunity to compete for the Smokefreerockquest title in the national final, which will take place in Auckland on Saturday, September 24. “I was saying to the boys beforehand, you know, let’s just forget about trying to get the awards and go out there and give it our all,” says Kieran. “We spent a lot of time polishing and critiquing the songs. We just wanted to get up there and play music that lots of people would enjoy.” The 12 bands vying for the title performed two songs each, in front of a sell-out crowd of 500 at the Theatre Royal, and while the level of talent was certainly high, it was Motion’s “refined sound and hook-driven songs set them apart.” Seven piece hip-hop crew The Hoard, from Golden Bay High School, will also get a chance at the national title after placing second. Both bands won musical gear from the events sponsor, NZ Rockshops, and will now be focusing on creating a 15 minute long recording of their best material which will be submitted to determine their selection as one of the top 30 national finalists. Joining them from the solo-duo section will be Cam Dawson from Garin College and Tegan Fisher from Waimea College, whose results were announced at the regional heats. The People’s Choice Award, which was done through text, went to Coastal from Nelson College for Girls, who will now be in the running to open the Smokefreerockquest national final. I really hope they get the temporary visa and full residency. They are doing wonders for the community and are an asset to Nelson. Victoria White.
Approval granted for Brook bait drop: What a bunch of useless, brainless idiots. Council members need changing. Soon, between baiting and that algae in river, there will be nowhere safe to takes kids or pets. So much for our lovely green-living Nelson. Amy Wilkinson.
I am sad and disappointed for you all-this is so wrong on so many levels! All the great things you contribute and this is how NZ treats you-sad, sad times - I will be hoping common sense prevails! Catherine Bozoky.
I can’t believe that they think they can make it predator-free permanently by three poison drops. The rats, pigs, deer and cats will come back the following season. Look at everywhere else that gets poisoned, the numbers drop for a period then usually come back stronger. Every time there’s heavy rain the fence falls down, so what’s the point of poisoning a lot of the birds as a result when the pests will bounce back quicker. Bryce Bird.
So this is how NZ treats good working people who also do

Local business tackles the big jobs Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists sure lived up to their name last week after performing a recore on a substantial commercial radiator. Taken from a D7 Caterpillar, used by a Nelson company in the local logging industry, the radiator turned up at the workshop on Tuesday evening, the team started work on Wednesday, then received a brand new core which was quickly flown down from Auckland, before the job was finished by the Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists team on Thursday morning. Recoring requires the entire centre piece of the radiator to be replaced, and while the team is more than capable of creating radiators from scratch, getting the ready made core from Auckland was far more time efficient and economic. While the caterpillar’s radiator is not the biggest they’ve tackled, it was still one of largest Richmond Exhaust and Radiator Specialists owner Bradley Ev- at around 150 kilograms, and ans with the massive radiator he and his team worked on re- backs up their motto that “big cently. Natureland earns welfare accreditation
Two years of hard work has paid off for Natureland, with the Tahunanui zoo this month earning its full welfare accreditation from the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia. Natureland is owned by a local trust
and employs eight people. Since the trust took over management of the facility in 2014, trustees Meg Selby and Mike Rutledge say welfare has been at the forefront of their thinking and acknowledged the entire staff for their efforts. Advt.
Your Family’s Health vs Your Money When someone in your family is diagnosed with a serious illness you have three choices; 1. Wait until they can be treated in the public system, (can be 6 months +++) and hope they survive long enough to receive the treatment. 2. Pay for the treatment, (drugs, surgery, hospitalisation) and hope you don’t need to mortgage your house. 3. Plan ahead, pay a little bit now and get treatment when you need it at no extra cost! Due to the lack of funding for the Public Health Service, you can experience long delays before receiving treatment and many of the important drugs are unfunded. There are a number of ways we can help you plan for the future, but don’t wait until something happens, otherwise it will be too late and you will “have” to choose between option 1 or 2!

Hello everyone, We would like to thank all the Brightwater residents and our visitors who turned out and helped to make our 100th Anniversary of Anzac Day a memorable morning. Thanks again to Charlie Taylor for donating a new flagpole to enable us to proudly fly our national flag. It was also great to meet many of you for morning tea afterwards in the Hall. This is something we intend to continue in years to come. There are still burglaries happening in and around Brightwater, so please be aware of goings on, and make sure to report any crime. A Neighbourhood Watch group is a very good tool to keep our com-

Brightwater School Netball Four netball teams from Brightwater School took to the courts last Saturday. It is great to see so many pupils training hard and giving their all each week, and special thanks must go to the coaches and managers who dedicate their time to the teams, and also to the families for their ongoing support, often braving chilly mornings to cheer them on from the sidelines. Waimea Area Quilters Our first Waimea Area Quilt Show last month was a great success and we thank the communities of Brightwater, Wakefield and beyond for their huge support. Neither could we have coped with so many visitors without the hard work of all the members of Waimea Quilters, the busy vendors and for the back-up of the Wakefield School Pool Committee who ran a successful English Tea Room which netted a goodly sum towards the school pool and produced a fine collection of cakes, slices and other goodies that were much enjoyed by the visitors. We were blessed with lovely weather on both days, beautiful quilts of every type and size you can imagine, all much admired by our visitors. We have gained several new members who joined us for our May meeting. This has
encouraged us all to get working so we will be able to run another show in the future. Visitors and new members are always welcome to come along to the monthly meetings of this friendly group. email waimeaquilter@ gmail.com for more details Two Rivers Walkway Planting Join the pupils of Brightwater School on June 21st for more plantings alongside the Wairoa River to help make the Two Rivers Walkway a memorable place to walk and ride. You can join the children and bike with them, or meet them at the end of Bryant Road. The first group will leave Brightwater School at 9.30am for planting from 10am to 11am, and the second group will leave at 10.30am for planting from 11am until midday. Brightwater School Winter Gala Brightwater School will be brightening up your winter blues this year as they get set to host the very first Brightwater School Winter Gala. The gala has all the ingredients for a great day out, including a huge array of items destined for the silent auction, hot food with a winter twist, plenty of entertainment for the children including laser tag, a climbing wall, bouncy castles, pony

The Brightwater School Winter Gala will certainly have something for all ages, and all things going to

Held on the grounds of Brightwater School, the winter gala will be held on Sunday, July 3, from 11:30am until 2:30pm. Make sure you mark it on your calendar.
Wanderers Sports Club Senior Rugby It was big weekend of travel for our senior teams last weekend. Our Golden Oldies left the Clubrooms at 7am to travel to Reefton for the annual Reefton Rockbusters Golden Oldies Rugby Tournament. They played three games and again were recipients of great hospitality provided by the hosts. As well as the all important rugby, the weekend consists of an evening function and breakfast, with a few hours sleep in between, before heading back home on Sunday. The Division 2 team travelled to Collingwood for their game (Taylors Wanderers 10 - Collingwood 27) and Division 1 to Seddon where they played Awatere/Kaikoura combined team and drew 26-26.
Many miles travelled for the love of the game. Upcoming Tasman Trophy Game Wanderers are hosting the Tasman Trophy semi finals on Wednesday 1 June at 7.30pm. Wanderers’ Club Day - 28 May 2016 There’s a buzz around Wanderers Rugby Club on the eve of their annual club day in Brightwater this Saturday. The Wanderers senior A team are unbeaten in the Tasman Trophy competition and the club is continuing to grow with more than 330 players at
junior and senior level. Wanderers’ club manager, Diane Drogemuller says the club is going from strength-to-strength. “There’s a great atmosphere around the club at the moment, especially with the senior boys being undefeated, it’s got us buzzing to be honest.”

Wanderers fullback Jesse Pitman looks to make a break against the Central defence earlier this season. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport Diane says the club prides themselves on their welcoming atmosphere for new players and creating an environment where families want to play their sport for generations. “I know, personally, I’m onto my third generation of family members who play here and I know several families who are in a similar situation. “Players move on to being coaches or administrators and then they end up getting involved in their kids’ rugby. The club day also offers the opportunity for past players to return to the club and see people they have not seen in many years. “The great thing about the club is the life-long
memories and friendships you create over time.” Wanderers senior A coach Todd Bavin says, with his team being defending champions, it has been a strange feeling for the hunter to become the hunted. “We know that every team is going to want to play their best rugby against us this season, and I think we have handled that challenge really well.” Todd says his players have remained grounded despite the success they are experiencing. “For us, it hasn’t been about the scores that we have been beating teams by, it’s been more about our systems and structure. “It may sound strange but there have been times

when we have been frustrated in the changing rooms because we don’t think we have played as well as we could have.” Todd says while the attack has been a high point, he’d like to see a lift in defensive intensity and line speed as the semi-finals loom. The day will also see a 100-game cap presented to lock Ben Douglas. Todd says the cap is deserved for a player he calls “the ultimate team man”. “He’s been in the team for quite a few years and he was here when the results weren’t going our way and the scoreboard wasn’t looking as good as it is at the moment. So he deserves the moment... he’s the ultimate team man. “You always know he’ll give you 100 per cent whether he’s playing 80 minutes or five minutes and he’s a leader. “All the guys look up to him and one or two were playing in our under-12s team when Ben started Engine Capacity 27.2ccboys on the and they would be ball 65831-65835 Weight 4.1kg sidelines. “Now they are playing alongside YOUR PRICE him. ” Todd described Ben as a man who always led by example but wasn’t afraid to voice his opinion if he felt the forwards were not pulling their weight. Diane says the club has put an emphasis on providing training for both its junior players and coaches. Both senior players and Tasman
Makos players and coaches are regularly seen training juniors on the core skills of the game as well as things like tackle technique. Former Highlanders and Scottish mid-fielder John Leslie ran a skills session for both players and coaches. Diane says even the most experienced coaches got something out of it. “John was really great with his time and extremely passionate about the game, even some of our more longterm coaches walked away thinking ‘that’s a good way of doing something in training’ which is a positive. “It’s important to offer those kinds of opportunities to our players because it will keep the club strong.” Diane says the club day will be a chance for new club members to get a feel for the environment. There will also be barbecues and raffles. “We always look to make it a really enjoyable day for everyone. “With Wanderers leading the way as the team to beat in Nelson and Marlborough, bigger crowds are coming to check out the games at the Brightwater Domain. “It’s like anything, when you’re winning, more people come along to see what is happening and that improves things around the club,” Diane says. Both Brightwater Domain and Lord Rutherford Park will play host to games on the club day.

The Children’s Garden is a brand new centre that has the best interests of both the parents and children at heart. Centrally located between Nelson and Richmond on nearly a quarter acre of established grounds, The Children’s Garden is able to provide full care and education for children up to five years of age. Well respected and experienced centre principal Natasha Kibble and her team completed a meticulous rebuild and restoration of The Children’s Garden premises, in order to provide quality learning and care within a beautiful, harmonious centre. Natasha’s 20 years experience in early childhood care and education includes carrying out extensive study into the Pikler approach at the Pikler Institute in Budapest and, as a result, children can let their imaginations run wild in a setting that feels like an extension of their own home. The Children’s Garden also offers small group care for infants, creating an intimate environment with just 10 spaces available. For more information on the centre’s philosophy, or to enroll your child, contact Natasha today on 553 0665 or visit the Facebook page at The Children’s Garden, NZ. West Coast-Tasman is a region blessed with many innovative and passionate people who are doing amazing things for our communities. Recently I took Prime Minister John Key to visit the Motueka Family Service Centre where we saw first-hand how new, innovative approaches to connecting families with social services are improving the lives of hundreds of people in Motueka. Lisa Lawrence and her innovative team work to find the best fit for families, and go beyond the pale to achieve the best results for their clients. Some really amazing people doing amazing work! The passionate Tasman Cycleway Trust has ushered in a fantastic asset for the Tasman District in the Great Taste Trail. This project was funded partially by the Government’s national cycleway programme, and I had the pleasure of jointly cutting the ribbon at the official opening of the Spooner’s Tunnel section last month. Gillian Wratt and her passionate team of volunteers are helping build an amazing asset for the region. So, even though West Coast-Tasman is a big, remote region, it’s innovative and passionate people are doing so many outstanding things to make this a great place to live, work, play and raise a family. Demand at open homes through the roof Kate Russell
The prospect of buying your first home should be exciting. But would-be home buyers in Nelson are dealing with a market so congested the houses are selling before they are even advertised. And you only need to attend a local open home to see how competitive things have become. Lines of cars, dozens of pairs of shoes at the front door and cramped rooms, are what househunters are facing at open homes around the region at the moment. Attending an open home in Victory’s Emano St on Saturday was just a taste of how tough things are, with around 60 people squeezing into the three bedroom Californian bungalow. With the fire roaring, sun streaming through the windows, and agents handing around coffee and chocolate - people were impressed with what they saw. But it’s a case of too many buyers and not enough houses, and people are missing out. In fact, local real estate firm Summit Real Estate say they are ex-
periencing almost a 50 per cent drop in new listings compared to this time last year. “There are so many buyers and just not enough houses for sale,” says Summit Real Estate sales and marketing consultant, Jon Ichon. “Some buyers are really desperate at the moment.” He says they have a number of buyers on their database who get to be “front runners” and view houses before they are listed, which an “essential” thing to do if you’re a serious buyer. Speaking to hopeful house-hunters at Emano St, many said they were finding it “hard-going”. Ellie Salcin was there with her seven year old daughter, and says they are looking for their first home after living overseas and in Christchurch. They weren’t initially considering the Victory area, but are now keeping an open mind. “We looked a bit last year, but gave up as we got put off by the prices. But then we realised it’s not getting any better so have been hunting again since February,” she says.

A busy open home at Emano St on Saturday. Photo: Kate Russell. “There are just so many people at open homes – you just keep asking yourself, ‘have we got a hope’”? Rebecca McKenzie and Enola Turner, also first-home buyers who have just moved here from Auckland, say all the open homes they have been to so far have been “crazy busy”. “It’s a bit of an emotional battering – you just see the same people again and again at the viewings,” says Rebecca. Out on Richmond’s Washbourn Drive, a peaceful three-bedroom house that was just listed on Thursday had already gone to multi-offer by Friday evening, and is now under a conditional offer. But yet, the open home still attracted around 20 groups all up, and the disappointment on people’s faces when they were told it was already under offer was hard to ignore.
Speaking at the open home on Saturday, Donna Ching-Tregidga from YOU. Realty says the amount of interest they are seeing is “huge” and most price brackets are “going crazy”. “If we had five properties like this one, we would have been able to sell all five,” she says. “We’ve had calls from Auckland and Wellington about it, with people willing to get on a plane just to see it.” Donna says they are seeing an increase in out-of-town buyers, especially people who are returning to Nelson after living abroad, or other parts of the country. House hunter Helen Dirkze, who has just moved here from Wellington, was at the open home looking for a retirement abode for her and her husband. She says they have been “quite surprised” at the level of competition. “We thought we’d be spoilt for choice,” she says. “There’s not
much coming onto the market right now. You definitely need to be a cash buyer.” Another couple at the open home said they were looking to buy in Brightwater, but, due to a lack of properties, they were now being forced to consider other areas. Donna says that both buyers and sellers are being really wise, doing their research and know what they want. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Craig Russell says the Nelson market remains strong, with prices rising in both Nelson and Tasman. “Listing numbers continue to fall which is contributing to strong demand across the board,” he says. The latest QV statistics show that Nelson home values rose 3.3 per cent over the past three months and 9.5 per cent year on year. The average value in the Nelson City is now $451,124, and $446,291 in Tasman.

Jacks blew past Marist in the second half to win 2518 in their Grade 1 netball contest at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. After a tense first three quarters, Jacks’ defensive pressure proved too much for Marist to handle. The teams traded early goals, but Jacks probably had the better of an opening quarter which felt like both teams were feeling each other out. Both defensive ends dominated the first half with goals at a premium. After a 6-all stalemate through the opening quarter,
Marist had the better of the second quarter until they let their intensity slip late in the quarter. Marist did well to play to their strength and slow the game down when they were on attack, ensuring they got the ball to the shooters. Wing attack Mica Kaye was busy around the court while Marist goal keep Gloria O’Connor grabbed some important rebounds to help her team to a 10-8 halftime advantage. A flurry of turnovers punctuated the third quarter, Jacks tried to speed the game up and implement long passes which did not work. Jacks goal keep Hannah
McCulloch was a positive for her team which often turned the ball over further down the court. When Jacks shortened their passes, they found results and eventually evened up the game as Marist’s intensity dropped. Jacks 4-0 third quarter run swung the momentum back in their favour. It was Jacks that had scrambled to a 17-15 third quarter advantage. Jacks goal defence Claudia Woods made a number of key intercepts as the margin grew. Marist’s patience in defence had given way to a flustered effort which resulted in more turnovers.

One of the enjoyable things in life is taking the kids out fishing. During the last school holidays we took our boys, Lucas and Ollie, out for a few days fishing. We stayed overnight at French Pass where we were blessed with calm and sunny weather. After a scenic walk to French Pass lookout, the kids couldn’t wait to get started with some fishing. Lucas caught his first snapper when he was three years old, now at seven he is becoming quite skilled and is already trying to tell Dad how to do it. On the photo you see him hold-
ing his new PB snapper he caught on this trip. For kids, this is a great adventure and aren't they lucky to grow up in this amazing environment, so it’s great to see them enjoying it. The fish they catch are entered into the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club annual fishing competition that finishes this month, followed by the big Prize Giving in June. The club offers and organises many different activities to be enjoyed by the whole family. Find out more at www.Dawnbreakers.co.nz

Waimea Old Boys RFC Waimea Old Boys rack up big win on home turf www.wobrfc.co.nz
Jacob Page

Back in the winners circle, Waimea Old Boys coach Mark Milne praised his side for their lift in intensity during their 40-12 win over Harlequins at Jubilee Park on Saturday. It was just the bounce back the team needed after they conceded more than 60 points in their last game against Waitohi. “The guys did well and lifted when they needed to,” Mark says. “Most importantly we got the five competition points and we are back into it.” With no Jeff Lepa or Troy Mangan at the back of the forwards, it was up to those who remained to step up. Mark says every one of them did. “It was a much better effort from us, something we can build on.” The scrums were good all day, while first-five Dylan Fletcher scored 20 points. A James Lash 40 metre dash for the try line on the stroke of halftime saw Waimea Old Boys lead the visitors 21-5.
While Harlequins cut into that lead with a penalty try for an early tackle to open the second half, the home team ran away in the last 25 minutes. When the game opened up, the Waimea forwards found space and easy metres on the fringes. Harlequins tried to attack at every opportunity but rarely did it gain them points. Waimea’s line speed on defence was also another key factor in nullifying the Harlequins attack. Mark says the return of Cailan Gibson, as well as Ben and Tim Coman, was invaluable. “They made a difference for us just with their experience and skill,” he says. Waimea will travel to Renwick this weekend looking for five competition points to try and force their way into the top four during the final round. “We’ve embraced the challenges of travelling during this tournament and I think it’ll be a great contest against Renwick who are always tough to beat at home,” says Mark.
Waimea Old Boys Div 2 win by 50 Jacob Page
Waimea Old Boys are in the top four of Nelson Bays division two rugby thanks to a convincing 50-0 win over Murchison/Tapawera at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Number 8 Poulavu Blake scored three times as Waimea showed no

mercy to the travelling team. Coach Wayne Bateman says his players improved immensely in the second half after playing as individuals in the first 40 minutes. “We were up 22-0 at the half but I didn’t think we played that well. There was too much individual
SG
play, too many 50-50 passes,” he says. “We spoke about it at halftime and the guys were a lot more clinical afterwards.” Wayne says his forwards had worked on supporting the ball carrier after some struggles in their previous game.
“It’s not perfect but we were a lot better and our defence complemented that. “To keep a team to zero and only concede two tries against Takaka shows our defence is improving well.” Wayne says his team is “in a good spot” to challenge for the title.
“I won’t say too much on that because there’s a lot of footy left but we are tracking nicely.” Wayne praised midfielder Francis Fatu as well as his back three for their attack. Waimea will play Rangers this Saturday at the Moutere Hills grounds with a 1.15pm kick off.

SportS CYCLING: Richmond cyclist George Bennett recorded his best result on the professional tour finishing seventh in the Amgen Tour of California on Monday. George, who rides for the Dutch team Lotto NL Jumbo, completed the eight-stage tour in 31 hours 49 minutes 40 seconds, just 1 minute 50 seconds behind winner Julian Alaphilippe. VOLLEYBALL: Waimea College student Holly Chandler and her partner, Northland’s Jasmine Milton, finished 10th at the Asian under-19 beach volleyball champs played in Laos last week. Holly and Jasmine caused a major upset at the tournament when they beat second seed China. They also defeated Australia 2 in pool play. RUGBY: Waimea Combined’s domination of the first half against Ashburton College was enough to see them get an important road win 27-21. Waimea led 19-0 at halftime but had to survive a second half surge from the home team to secure the win. Nelson College will host Waimea Combined at Nelson College this Saturday.

Richmond Athletic humbled by FC Nelson
Richmond Athletic coach Matt Campbell says the solutions are easy to find after the division one football leaders were humbled 4-2 by FC Nelson. It was the first loss of the season for Richmond but it was a bigger result than that if you peel back the layers. Firstly they were beaten on their home ground of Jubilee Park and secondly they have given FC Nelson confidence ahead of the two teams meeting in the second round of the Chatham Cup during Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Matt says there will be no panic. “I thought the first half, in particular, Richmond’s player Daryl Fenemor looks to was pretty poor,” he says. play the ball up-field during his team’s 4-2 loss “Our players are better than what to FC Nelson on Saturday. FC Nelson won the aerial contest early and it helped them to two early goals and an eventual 3-0 halftime lead. “I thought in the second half we showed more resolve and, at 3-2 down, we were a chance of climbing back into it and at least getting a point but the fourth goal was too much for us to come back from. Dion Keetly and Nic Payn scored for the home team but Sam Harris’ double helped FC Nelson stay in front. Matt was philosophical about the team’s six game win streak coming to an end. “The solutions are easy to see and, while it’s never great to lose, hopefully it will spur us on the better things.”

Apply for a Community Grant online
Richmond Unlimited – Annual General Meeting
Are you planning a great community event or project – but need a little help to make it happen? We may be able to help. Applications for our Community Grants are open, and there is funding available for Tasmanbased projects that meet a community need, join communities together and have community support. Priority is given to projects that can show financial support from other sources as well. We’re moving to a simplified, online-only application form this year. To help you get started, we will be running sessions at our local libraries to show you how to fill in the online form. Details of these will be posted on our website and publicised in future editions of Newsline. Applications close on 31 July 2016. Grants are available for projects that fit into the following categories: • Arts/culture/heritage/museums • Festivals and events • Youth and children • Social services • Environment • Emergency services • Sports and recreation facilities.
Tuesday 14 June 2016, 5.30 pm, Richmond Town Hall, Richmond.
For more information: Visit our website, tasman.govt.nz/link/grants or email Community Partnerships Coordinator Mike Tasman-Jones, mike.tasman-jones@tasman.govt.nz.
Rates rebate You may qualify for a refund of a portion of your rates. You have until 30 June 2016 to apply for a rebate for the 2015/2016 rating year. You will have automatically received a rates rebate application form and guide if you have received a rates rebate in the past. These were sent in mid to late August 2015. You need to pay your rates account as usual. We will credit the rates rebate amount to your rates account and notify you once your application has been processed. Water main and resurfacing works As part of their responsibility to maintain and improve state highways across the country, the NZ Transport Agency is upgrading the water main on Gladstone Road between Oxford Street and McGlashen Avenue and then resurfacing the road. Crews are working at night from 7.00 pm–6.00 am, starting Monday 9 May, for approximately six weeks (about 25 nights work). Crews will not be working every night and given the nature of the work they will not work if bad weather strikes. Work will occur in stages over the four weeks to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and the travelling public. If you have any questions or would like to speak to someone about this project please contact Andrew McAllister on 03 546 3680 or 027 448 6267. If you need to talk to someone while the work is happening, please contact Nick Hill, Ph. 027 2468 499.
Have a say on Moturoa/Rabbit Island proposals Consultation is now open on a draft reserve management plan to guide Moturoa/Rabbit Island for the next decade. Over the summer of 2015/2016, 660 individuals and groups let us know what they love about Moturoa/Rabbit, Rough and Bird islands, what they think should change and what should stay the same. That feedback was used to develop the Draft Moturoa/Rabbit Island Reserve Management Plan. That’s not the end of the process though – we still want to know if you think we’ve got it right. There are 12 key proposals we’re seeking specific feedback on, but you’re welcome to comment on any part of the draft plan. Have a say You can read the full draft plan and make a submission by visiting our website, tasman.govt.nz/feedback, or in hard copy at Council offices and libraries. Submissions close on Friday 8 July.
With the busy tourist season still with us, and winter on the way, more volunteers are urgently required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large database. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the World. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or contact Sally Symonds, Ph. 03 542 3983 (rosters) for further details.
