Two year wait for reception Phillip Rollo The wider Tapawera area looks set to obtain full cell phone coverage, with Vodafone currently in negotiations with a “preferred candidate” over a site to build a cell phone tower on. However, residents could be forced to wait another two years for it to eventuate. Residents of the rural township have been fighting with Vodafone and Telecom for more than two years with some individuals writing, calling both companies, and even setting up a Facebook page in protest. Tapawera Area School principal Kelvin Woodley, community council chairperson Dinkie Phillips and Tasman District councillor Stuart Bryant all agreed that there was a want for cell phone coverage in the area. Residents currently meet near
pockets of reception to use their cell phones. The cell phone tower will be part of the New Zealand Government’s Rural Broadband Initiative. The government has appointed Chorus to provide connectivity to rural schools through a direct fibre connection and has appointed Vodafone to provide rural community coverage through the delivery of infrastructure and a wireless broadband service. “We know people in Tapawera are very keen for the service and we are trying to secure the necessary agreement – but there is still some way to go,” says Vodafone’s Emma Carter. “We do have a preferred candidate, but we’re yet to conclude an agreement with the landowner. Once that part of the process is successful we will apply for resource management consent.”

Surviving another scooter challenge The challenge is to drive from Nelson city to the Marlborough Sounds in four days. It sounds simple enough, but there are plenty of buts. First, it must be done on a 50cc scooter, over some of the toughest off-road tracks in the top of the South Island. Then you must compete in challenges each day against the other riders with the winner raising cash for charity. Finally, you must do it with a smile on your face, although founder and organiser of the Survivor Scooter Challenge, Jason Monopoli, admits he’s never seen anyone struggle through the last one. The Survivor Scooter Challenge is now in its third year and will be bigger than ever. It’s a fun challenge, driving a 50cc scooter off-road and with great camaraderie. Jason started the event in New Zealand after competing in the Australian Postie Bike Challenge, where hundreds of people drive through the desert on a 50cc scooter. Since then it has grown from a few mates the first year to a maximum of 15 riders last year and 20 this year. Jason says he has already had confirmations from some riders for this year’s event but would like to see more

“Definitely. I want to see the boxing. Other than that, anything with New Zealand competing, really.”
“I’m from England, so I’m really excited. I can’t wait to see the opening ceremony and the closing ceremony, and the in between, haha.
“Yes, there are so many neat things. I like the crazy things, like the rhythmic gymnastics, and the diving is quite neat.”
“I’ll watch the windsurfing, since it’s the last year they’re doing that, I’m a kitesurfer. And the rowing, and the equestrian.”

Just keen to have a good time.” The challenge starts on November 21 and will make its way to Ward beach in the Marlborough Sounds. “We
want as much off-road as possible but still really scenic. Our challenges this year will be Olympic themed. We will pick some events and have some fun with them.” Jason is also hoping to get some corporate sponsorship to help raise more money for the designated charity – KPH, a charity for children with special needs. Last year the event raised $4500 for KPH. For more information visit www.survivorscooter.com, call Jason on 0508 467 264 or email info@orangedog.co.nz.

It’s show time
It’s all action at Waimea College as it prepares for the first night of its production, Guys and Dolls. Chris Goodyear and Bridget Field have claimed the lead roles for the show, which starts tonight. Chris has a wealth of experience from other productions both in and out of school, but Bridget is fairly new to the stage. “This is my first one so it’s kinda exciting, I don’t quite know what to expect, come opening night,” she says. More than 100 students and teachers have been involved in Chris Goodyear and Bridget Field star in getting the production togethWaimea College’s production, Guys and er, with the cast, crew, dancers, and a full orchestra of students. Others have been involved with creating the set and getting the costumes ready. Rehearsals have been going well and director Melanie Stewart is confident they will be prepared for opening night. “There’s lots of glitz and glamour, lots of dancing. It’s a happy musical. Everyone’s put in a lot of hard work, it’ll be definitely one worth coming to,” The production opens tonight at 7.30pm, with performances following on Thursday, Friday, and a matinee and evening performance on Saturday. Tickets are available from the Waimea College Finance Centre, with group discounts available.

Wakefield to become cycling mecca Rosie Thomsen
Wakefield could be hit by an influx of visiting cyclists, boosting the local economy. The township is set to become a popular cycle destination following the opening of a new suspension bridge between Brightwater and Richmond. With the section of track to Wakefield due to be completed by the end of the year, the village is already seeing a trickle of keen cyclists coming through. The track won’t be extended past Wakefield until 2014 and Fiona Newey of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust predicts that due to this, the village will become a hot destination for cyclists. “People are already biking along Higgins Rd, testing where the track is going to go. They’re excited about it, now that they’ve got the bridge in,

and they’re coming along to see the next step,” says Fiona. The influx of bike tourists is expected to have a positive effect on the local businesses, with the owners of local cafés and tearooms already noticing the increase in customers. “We’re getting a lot of cyclists, they’re making it a point of call. There are some familiar faces already, and not just locals,” says Allie Preller, owner of the Wakefield Villa Tearooms. “We’ve got the bike racks, the garden and inside seating, and there’s fresh chilled water. We’re already set up.” The track is primarily used by local families or older cyclists touring the country. The motivation behind creating the cycle trail is to bring tourists off the “beaten track” and attract visitors to rural areas. “It’s great for the whole community,” says Allie.

Crash survivor gets own home Phillip Rollo
Mark Cooper’s life was turned upside down when he blacked out at the wheel of his truck in 2010. He was driving back following a day of mustering when the accident occurred. “I fell asleep or blacked out. I think I got a bit cold,” says Mark. “I didn’t go around the corner. I went off the edge and over head to tail three times and sideways once.” The 21 year old Tapawera resident suffered severe spinal injuries leaving him without the use of 70 per cent of his body. He was in a coma for the first ten days, spent the next month in intensive care and the following six months in Burwood Hospital’s spinal unit. Following further rehabilitation, Mark reached a significant milestone last week when was finally handed the keys to his new home on Wednesday, having lived in a Richmond motel for the past 12 months. The Cooper family is still in “a battle” with ACC over the payment of the house, which has delayed Mark’s move back to Tapawera
and a chance to regain some independency. Mark was living in accommodation supplied by his employers in Fairlie, which is located two and a half hours south of Christchurch. “We got to the point where we had to bite the bullet. What we wanted and what he wanted was to move into his own home,” says his mother Julie Cooper. “It’s a bit bitter sweet but it’s fantastic to finally get him home where he can build his life back up.” Due to the size of the farm the Coopers live on, a self contained unit was able to be transported from Richmond, where it was built by Skyline Buildings. Julie says the family chose to deal with Skyline Buildings because of its history of working with people in similar situations to Mark. It has two bedrooms, one for himself and a carer. Mark says the space and access
are the best things about his new home. “Just being able to get around without breaking stuff and running into stuff. I’m quite happy with it.” Mark is a former Tapawera Area School student who also spent his senior years at Waimea College. He was a keen dog trialist and a skier. He also enjoyed “mucking around” with friends in his spare time.
Mark hopes to compete again one day in a dog trial and also has aspirations to get back into the workforce. “I just take it as I come but if I get the right set up I can get my way back into dog work. You can’t get too worked up but it’s going to happen one day.” He is also hopeful to one day drive again, in a custom built car.
I would rather have them with me than against me, add it up.

Thousands help bless fishing fleet Nelson’s fishing fleet has once again been blessed in the lead up to the hoki season, with thousands turning up for the twelfth annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. It was also a day to remember those lost at sea. Jude Wells, who lost her husband Barry in 1999, laid a wreath upon the ocean on behalf of the families of all those lost at sea. An ode of remembrance was played by piper Perry Smith, followed by minute’s silence for those lost at sea as well as those currently working on the fishing boats. Bill and Robyn Reid’s 1943 Avro Anson Mk 1 took to the sky for the first time last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Bill Reid couldn’t keep the smile off his face as his 1943 Avro Anson Mk 1 bomber took to the sky for the first time last week. Aviation enthusiasts and historians alike gathered at vantage points around Nelson Airport last week to witness the recently restored Avro Anson take to the air for the first time since its 10 year restoration project was completed in May this year. The aircraft lifted gracefully into the air to the delight of the spectators crowding to watch the occasion, and followed closely by a helicopter with film crew aboard. Bill and the Anson’s two test pilots took two flights around the Tahunanui-Monaco area, keeping within gliding distance of the airport. Robyn Reid says her husband was “really pleased” with the performance of the plane, as were the two test pilots. “He [Bill] was just rapt. He said it was awesome and he had a very big smile on his face for a few days,” she says. The next test flights will insure the aircraft can be signed off in order to obtain its airworthy certificate. At the moment it is on an experimental certificate, which enables it to do test flying. The aircraft will be shown and flown at air shows in New Zealand including Warbirds over Wanaka, and the Omaka Air Show in Marlborough. Robyn says an open day was still planned for the Nelson region. However, all of the tests will be completed before a date is confirmed. Nelson Airport chief executive Kaye McNabb highlighted the aircrafts rarity following its inaugural flight. “This is the only one of its kind in world to be flying so the occasion was pretty exciting to watch,” she says. “Seeing her fly is an amazing tribute to Bill and Robyn Reid and their team, and indeed to the skills, expertise and ability of the aviation industry in the Top of the South Island.” Bill is currently overseas attending the OSK KOSH air show in the United States. Kaye says the Avro Anson will put the New Zealand aviation industry on the map and was likely to be a hot topic at the show.

Ngaire is NZ’s oldest Olympian Andrew Board The last time the Olympic Games were in London, Ngaire Galloway was a 23 year old national swimming champion and preparing to take the stand for her first qualifying swim of the 1948 games. And she was almost beside herself. Never before had she raced in front of so many people and with no coaching or support staff of any sort she wound herself up with feelings of nerves and not wanting to let down her country. Then, as her name was called, the six other New Zealanders in the Olympic team, all men, stood in the stands of the swimming complex and did a haka. It brought the announcement of the competitors to a standstill and strange looks from Ngaire Galloway, who represented New Zealand at the 1948 London spectators. Ngaire was based in Dunedin when she qualified for the games, she trained in the morning before her day job as a secretary and in her lunch break. She was a New Zealand champion and needed to better the time of 72 seconds over 110 yards (100 metres) to qualify. She did that in a pool by herself and with three time keepers watching on but had to wait three weeks before the Olympic Selection Committee confirmed she would be going to the Games. Before leaving for the six week boat trip she was engaged to Ken, who would later become a doctor in Nelson for many decades. Because there was no swimming pool on the boat, the crew lined a container for her, which was slightly bigger than a bath, she could drop herself in it and practise her kicking. Weights were jimmied up with pullies so she could pull on them to practice her stroke. When she arrived in England she was separated from her teammates, because men and women could not mix, and had to find a pool to train in as the team manager had failed to do so. Fortunately she found a place swimming alongside the Great Britain team. In the leadup to the Games she won the English Swimming Championships but could not replicate her good form at the Olympics. She says walking out in front of 83,000 people at a packed Wembley stadium for the opening ceremony was one of the highlights of her life. The games were officially opened by King George VI and the choir music was outstanding, but walking out with the six other New Zealanders when 83,000 Brits erupted in gratitude to New Zealand's contribution in World War 2 was something else says Ngaire. “I’ll never forget it, never. We just tingled all over, it was incredible.” She has since been to two other Olympic Games as a spectator and will be getting up early to watch the games.
Mark-et Comment
We can all relate to this scenario. It’s 2pm and you are outside “your” property that you are hoping to move into and you are asking for the keys from the Real Estate salesperson and because the property has not “settled” you cannot have access. The stress and frustration are starting to take their toll. Unfortunately the person that often cops the brunt of your frustration is the salesperson who is in the right place at the wrong time. There are ways of minimising the stress, but before I mention these you need to know the following information. The keys and the property still belong to the current owners until the property is paid for in full, ie ‘settled’. You cannot take possession of the property unless you have paid for it. The salesperson does not need to be involved in this transfer as it is usually done between the solicitors. The reason why salespeople are involved is because they are easily available to drop keys off and are easily contactable. It is the owners responsibility to make sure all keys are available and it is the purchasers responsibility to ensure that their bank and solicitor are able to settle as soon as possible as per contract on the day. If no other settlements are involved on the purchaser’s property then settlement can take place at any time during the day. It is very uncomfortable for the salesperson to have to say “sorry no”, to a buyer when they are ready to move in immediately. But we are bound by a code of ethics and contractual law and we are lawfully unable to release any keys until the
payment for the property has been made in full. I like to try and get the buyers and the sellers together so that they can establish their own time frames as to when everyone can move in or out of their properties. In some cases excellent goodwill is shown, where the owners may allow access to the garage or even their property prior to possession, although their solicitors, rightly, don’t always approve of this. The key for a less stressful day of moving is to, communicate your intentions to your bank, communicate your instructions to your solicitor, meet with the sellers via the agent and discuss various options including where the keys are going to be on the day. Or alternatively, arrange bridging finance and settle on your new home three days before settling on your old home. This gives you three full days to move and the cost of bridging may be less than you think. This option needs to be discussed with your solicitor with regard to risk. I believe this is a great option. Rather than dealing with all the stress of moving out of your home whilst the new buyers are moving in, and then having to go back and clean the home for them and maybe also have to clean the new home; there is no guarantee from the seller that they will have their home spotless for you– it is a courtesy only. Talk with your salesperson about moving day, he or she is the best person to talk to as a “go between” for all parties concerned to keep things moving along. Business Update. Adv.

Kids get taste of the games

Excited students got the chance to compete against Olympians as the Olympic Experience Double Decker bus visited school groups in Richmond and Nelson. The bus was set up for the ANZ Olympic Town Tour, equipped with rowing and cycling machines on the lower floor, where the children could try out the Olympic sports and see how they fared against the times of top athletes. On the upper level, iPads were set up to take a photo of each student to send, along with an inspirational message, to members of the current New Zealand Olympic team. The bus arrived last Thursday, with its first stop along Queen St in Richmond. The bus went on
to Victory Primary School, where former Olympian Sarah Ulmer gave an inspirational talk to the whole school. Friday the bus tour finished up with Nelson College. The double decker bus has a rich history of its own, built in the 1960s and having toured the world twice. The bus is currently travelling the country, with athletes at each leg to inspire local schoolchildren. “I liked the rowing, and doing the photo and sending the message. I said kia ora, bring back the gold,” says Riley Douglas, 10. The students say they are looking forward to the Olympic Games, and are most excited to watch the BMX, gymnastics, shooting and athletics.

TO THE EDITOR
As a Tasman District ratepayer I feel it is time for a few honest facts with regards to the Nbus fiasco in Sundial Square. I believe after reading an article in the Waimea Weekly newspaper that some of the staff of the TDC have obviously no desire to see Nbus operate smoothly, which in my book does not help the business people of Richmond. That includes people travelling from Nelson who shop in our town. Over recent times TDC have removed at least three bus stops from Queen St. If my calculations are correct one bus stop should take up the space of three car parks. This being the case, TDC have gained nine car parks in Queen St yet have only lost two parks in Sundial Square. I believe providing two extra car parks in Sundial Square leading into the existing bus stop would solve the existing problem, apart from the ugly post box that holds up traffic whilst people stop to post their mall. Come on TDC, it would be four parks lost in this area as against the nine gained in Queen St. Even I can work this out without too much difficulty. R. Jones, Tasman.

‘A dragon please’ says delivery instructions Joanna Martin filled out the online form on the Briscoes website, typed in the product purchase number and her address, then she got the part that said “delivery instructions”. She wrote: “Please leave on the back porch… and a picture of a dragon would be awesome”. The result? Her cupcake holders arrived in a brown box with the printed out picture of a dragon on the side. Joanna, who lives in Hope, says she couldn’t believe it. “My flatmate was home, she called me and said ‘um your package from Briscoes is here and there’s a dragon on the side of the box.’ I let out a little squeal and said ‘that is awesome’.” Joanna says it’s not the first time she has heard of it before, with pizza boxes another common request. “I saw it on a website and thought it was pretty cool so when I bought something online I thought ‘oh, I’ll give it a go’.” She has since emailed Briscoes to express her gratitude but received an automated message Joanna Martin with the box sent to her by back. “I hope I didn’t get anyone in trouble beBriscoes with the requested dragon on the side cause I was so happy. It was really cool whoof it. Photo: Andrew Board. ever did it.”
Art expo coming to Nelson Nelson is taking its reputation as an arts capital rather seriously, preparing to host a massive art expo that organisers hope will lead the way for South Island artists. Nic Foster says the concept of art expos is big in Europe and other centres in New Zealand and it was about time Nelson followed suit. “We have so many wonderful artists here in Nelson and
this will be a great way for them to sell some work and get noticed by dealers.” Fifteen art dealers from the North Island will be flown down for the expo which will include the works of 98 artists, most of those from Nelson. The Nelson Art Expo will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on July 28 and 29. Tickets are $5 per adult.

Holiday photo puts Josh into comp final A holiday to Turkey in April may earn Richmond man Josh Donnelley another opportunity to go globetrotting. Josh was enjoying a ride in a hot air balloon when he noticed the neighbouring balloon was adorned with the Turkish flag. “I thought, well that would be a great photo,” says Josh, “it’s just gone from there really.” Josh’s photo is one of five chosen from amongst thousands of entries for the House of Travel ‘How Kiwis see the world’ photo competition. The winner is chosen by popular vote on the House of Travel Facebook page, with the overall winner scoring $10,000 and a Canon 60D, and the winner of each category receiving a $5000
Qantas voucher and a Canon PowerShot camera. Josh has already entered the photo in several photography competitions since he took it earlier this year, with mixed results. This is the first competition that it has reached the national finals. “I was really proud of the photo. Photography is so subjective; it’s great that it’s getting some recognition,” says Josh. The aspiring photographer has an exhibition coming up in October where his photography will be showcased alongside work from another local artist, and he says he hopes to eventually make some money from the skill. “One of the things I’ve found out with photography is that you have to get your work out there. Sometimes you’re not going to do well, but it’s still important to get it out there, get it seen,” says Josh. Gemma Chapman of Nelson is also a finalist, in another category for a photo she took of a paddle boarder

By the year 2050 it is estimated that the world’s population will be as high as nine billion, and that readily recoverable oil and gas reserves will have run out. As a consequence of our unsustainable use of fossil fuel, Earth’s surface will be 2°C warmer - above the United Nations threshold for “dangerous human interference with the climate system”. I will discuss what this will mean for melting of the polar ice sheets, global sea-level rise and the trend towards more frequent catastrophic storm events. Professor Tim Naish is the Director of the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University and a Principle Scientist at GNS Science. His current research contributes to the understanding of how continental margins respond to climate and sea-level change, specifically focusing on the role of ice sheets and Antarctica in the global climate system.
If it’s so obvious, why doesn’t everyone believe in climate change? Who believes in climate change? What is the psychology behind believing (or not believing) in climate change? Using data from two large New Zealand surveys, I’ll talk about some of the personality, political, pathological, and social factors associated with climate change belief. I’ll also talk about some of the biases in decision-making, which means it is very difficult to change strongly-held opinions either way. Associate Professor Marc Wilson’s research focuses on the application of social psychological theory to important issues. He is a highly regarded researcher and teaching practitioner who has received a National Tertiary Teaching Award and Victoria’s Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award.

Just a thought...
Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics said “the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” I would add “and finish well!” Twenty years ago at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Derek Redmond defined the essence of the human spirit. Disappointed at having to pull out of the 1988 Games in Seoul only 10 minutes before his race, because of an Achilles tendon injury he was determined to compete in the Barcelona Games. Unfortunately while running in the semi-final of the 400 metres he pulled a hamstring and fell. Realising his dream of an Olympic medal was over, with tears streaming down his face, he determined to finish his race. Then, in a moment that will live forever in the minds of millions, Redmond starts hobbling to the finish while the crowd, slowly, in total disbelief, rose and began to roar. His father Jim Redmond, seeing his son in trouble, raced down from the top row of the stands, leapt over the railing, avoided a security guard, and ran out to his son, supporting him as he hobbled painfully to the finishing line. With 65,000 people cheering, clapping and
crying, finally both father and son crossed the finishing line arm in arm. “I’m the proudest father alive,” he told the press afterwards with tears in his eyes. “I’m prouder of him than I would have been if he had won the gold medal. It took a lot of guts for him to do what he did.” It reminds me of the famous quote of US President Theodore Roosevelt. “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotion, spends himself in a worthy cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be Ross Ferguson, Richmond Com- with those cold and timid munity Church. souls who have never tasted victory or defeat.” Talking of the race we are all running, the writer of the book of Hebrews says, “Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us, stripping off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honour beside God’s throne.”

Local Man Embraces International Standards You may know Tom Jeffrey from his days with Marist Rugby, Tasman Wheelers, or his long standing management role with Sealord, or he may have had children at school with your children. What you may not know is that Tom Jeffrey recently purchased the existing Enviro Clean and Restoration business in Nelson and Marlborough. As a proud Tasman man, Tom wanted to make a difference in the local community by personally owning a business that would contribute to the wellbeing of people. Tom is excited to work with George Pope who has been with Enviro for five years and shares the same passion for going to work each day and making a difference in people’s lives. With Tom’s technical background and some 20 years of customer care, Enviro’s national team were thrilled to welcome Tom to the nationwide Enviro family. Enviro, New Zealand’s leading carpet cleaning and restoration company carefully selects business owners who understand the commitment to international standards within an industry. Enviro lives and breathes its commitment to the industry’s qualifications known as IICRC. It is these standards which make the difference to whether or not people are healthy and safe in their homes/work after Enviro has helped them with a flood, damage from a fire, a meth lab, sewage backflow, blood spills, chemical spills, trauma scene, mould remediation, tear gas, hoarder situations and norovirus decontamination. In these emergency, disaster and hazardous situations Tom, George and the rest of the team are on call 24/7. The IICRC standards also apply to Enviro’s carpet cleaning, hard floor cleaning, upholstery, leather cleaning and pest control services. Tom’s prima-
ry focus in delivering these services to homeowners, business owners and large commercial clients is to have people understand that the cleaning of floors and upholstery is not just a matter presentation, but of huge importance to their family and employees health. If you want to reduce asthma, bacterial and viral infections in the home or work place, reduce employee sick days or protect your family immune systems, then have your floors cleaned for health, not looks alone. The only way to clean for health is to use the hot water extraction method. This method involves truck mounted machines that have the ability to heat the water to a level that will kill bacteria and virus. Enviro only uses this hot water extraction method along with cleaning solutions that have the international CRI Gold Seal of Approval and are biodegradable. Tom is thrilled to know that every day he and his team are improving the health of local families and employees. As the only member of the New Zealand Carpet Cleaning Association in Nelson and Marlborough, Tom has access to the latest technology and scientific developments through the research undertaken by the Enviro group across New Zealand. Tom and his team plan to make sure that the Tasman community continues to benefit locally from this involvement. So if it is a carpet stain at home or work that’s been bugging you, or you realise it is time to take care of the health of your family and employees by cleaning your carpets, or you suspect a mould problem or need advice about a possible p lab or want to ask to be placed on our emergency response list in case of a larger scale disaster, then give Tom a call on 03 548 2831 Business Update. With the largest shed storage facility in the Nelson region, they can maintain a dryer product than competitors, even in the middle of winter. With Wholesale Firewood you can be confident you’ll get the best product and service. They stock a variety of firewood, which this year has included Macro, Gum, Pine, Old man pine and D.Fir, although demand has left only Blue Gum and Pine for this winter. The Autocross is a timed competition but there is no pressure – it’s all about giving it a go and having fun. Last year’s event attracted a range of vehicles and skill levels, with entries including a 1300cc road car to a Mitsubishi Evo 3 and everything in between. The entry fee is $20, with documentation and scrutineering taking place between 9:30 -10:00am this Sunday. Entries close at 10:00am. All drivers will be briefed at 10:15 with driving beginning at 10:30. Spectators are welcome, even if you don’t feel like driving you may have the opportunity to be taken for a lap in any car fitted with a roll cage. This weekend’s Autocross is just one of the great events in the Nelson Car Club’s annual calendar. These include autocross events, rally sprints as well as gravel and sealed hill climbs. Non-members are welcome to try out two autocross events before becoming financial members. The Nelson Car Club was established more than sixty years ago and currently has more than 70 members. Rabbits soak up finals glory Andrew Board
The Stoke Cobras started with a hiss but in the end couldn’t match the speed of Tasman rugby league’s new champions, the Richmond Rabbits. Super Cheap Auto Stoke Cobras were the two-time defending champions of the Tasman Rugby League Smokefree Bin Inn Cup but had already lost twice to the Stables Richmond Rabbits this season and once again couldn’t match its fitness late in the game. A bi-partisan crowd filed into Trafalgar Park for the match, each with equal support from the stands. Stoke was the first to score thanks to an overlap on the right flank allowing Hoani Tauwhare to dot down. The try wasn’t converted but the Cobras found several gaps in the Rabbits defence and mid-way through the first half scored a run away try to give them a handy 8-0 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in the half. But the Rabbits came back into the game despite the loss of prop Ryan Charles to injury
and after some sustained pressure, captain Deon Charles burrowed through the legs of the Stoke defence from a metre out to score his side’s first try. Further tries to Cam Salton and Callum Smith in the second half put Richmond in the lead, along with conversions from Lucas Bennett. Stoke also scored two second half tries, to Jamein Bristowe and Keani Edwards, but it failed to land one shot at goal. Lucas hit a field goal for the Rabbits towards the end of the game to give it a three point buffer. Deon says he was stoked with the massive support the team had and was ecstatic to come away with the title in the side’s first season. “It’s a bit of a fairytale finish really. But we put in a lot of hard work and started training last October and we worked really hard all year so we are rapt to win it.” A large majority of the Richmond side were from rugby union backgrounds but Deon says the team came together and improved as the season went on. “We can all safely say we are league players now and I think we’ll see a lot The Richmond Rabbits celebrate winning the 2012 Tasman Rugby League more rugby players switch over.” Smokefree Bin Inn Cup at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Nelson teams excel at age group tournament Nelson teams excelled at the Nelson Age Group Tournament held at Saxton Courts on Sunday. Under 17, Under 15, Under 13 and the respective Development teams competed against Marlborough, Buller, Golden Bay and Motueka. The Nelson Under 17s left its best until last when it totally outclassed Golden Bay 51–24 in its final game. Coach Tish Jamieson was faced with four withdrawals from the team she took to nationals earlier in the month. Sara Reidie and Courtney Robinson were both injured, Kaitlyn Stringer was in Wellington on Nelson Sparks Basketball duty and Keilamarita Pouri–Lane was ill. The SOS was put out to Tasman Under 19 reps Ella Marwick and Ashley Laing, who are both still eligible to play Under 17. Ella and Ashley bolstered the roster no end and gave the team confidence. Nelson took the court firing on all cylinders against Golden Bay, and everything fell its way when it raced out to an astonishing 15–1 lead after one quarter. Golden Bay were forced to make a wholesale change in moving Courtney Clark from goal keep to goal shoot. The move was Freya Watson’s key to lift and she worked tirelessly to contain her more experienced opposite. Freya pulled in an amazing six clean intercepts and rebounded strongly with great body position. ter against Buller Under 19. Nelson were guilty of numerous unforced errors however a hard fought last quarter saw the side come out on the right side of the ledger by the tune of 36–33. Nelson were definitely in touch with Marlborough when they were in arrears by one at the first break and by two at half time. However a below par third period saw the Nelson girls playing catch up netball. To their credit, Nelson lifted and drew the final stanza but it was a little too late with the final score 38–30 to the red team. Ashley did all that was asked of her when she was given the three different defensive bibs, and her work ethic lifted the lesser experienced girls. Nelson Under 15 Development had a one win two loss record however the side’s coach, Sarah Rankin gave her charges a pass mark. There has been a massive improvement as a team unit – it has worked on squares and straight line play and setting up for intercepts at training and it was pleasing to see some of the work paying dividends. More improvement can be expected when it plays at the Nelson Development Tournament on 12 August. Nelson matched Marlborough A in the first half, and after drawing the first quarter it was only one in arrears at half time. Marlborough lifted the bar in the second half and pulled away to win 36–19. Captain, Hannah Taylor lead by example – she was tenacious in defence and was extremely well disciplined with her .9m distance. Nelson was one goal better than Motueka Under 17 in each of the first three quarters. A number of positional changes paid dividends when it powered away to win 30–20.

The perfect season Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers have won the division three final in the most astonishing fashion, finishing the entire season undefeated. The team hosted the grand final against Wakatu Marist at Brightwater on Saturday, with Wanderers coming out on top courtesy of an impressive 26-0 win. Wanderers carried on its good form into the final and ran in two early tries. The first came from a good forward build up which saw Kevin Timpson crash over and the second was scored out wide by Darren Mongan after another solid build up, that combined with one conversion and penalty saw wanderers go into half time with a 15-0 lead. The second half was again keenly contested with Wanderers being reduced to 13 players at one stage

The squad knew what needed to be done on Saturday at Greenmeadows against arch rivals Stoke. To have any chance of making a play off spot WOB required a bonus point win – that translated to a solid win with four tries to gain the required five points on the table. The game opened well with both sides indicating they were there to do battle. After 10 minutes had past, Waimea had Stoke on defence with good pick and go’s from the forward pack, which this week was playing with confidence based off solid set piece, in particular a scrum that would make Fitzy proud. The passage of ‘up the middle’ attack topped off a good team spell with player/ coach Marc Hunter being pushed over under the sticks. He celebrated like a school kid with a new bike knowing this was a blow to the pride of Stoke. Jay Wright add-
ed the extra two from straight out in front. The only other points to be placed on the board came from the solid running captain Luke Thelin, busting through the midfield for a five pointer near the left-hand side. Jay was unsuccessful this time with the kick. Play then volleyed between the teams for the remainder of the half and the boys went to the oranges with WOB leading by 12-0. At the break, WOB coaches knew exactly what need to happened and drilled this into the boys – they responded in perfect fashion with the ideal start when within 30 second of the whistle Jay charged down a kick from Stoke’s 22, gathered the ball then passed out wide to waiting replacement centre Jude Raffills to go over in the corner. Jay then slotted arguably the toughest of the day from out on the left-hand touch to add the extra two. After the smashing start, play settled down

with Stoke gaining some composure. However, the next time the board ticked over (in the 64th minute) was when Waimea’s flying winger Lisette Paea showed good form down the right-hand touch line to add another try. Stoke showed all was not lost as it still had some fire in the tank and had Waimea pinned on its line for a good five minutes – they threw it all at the visitors and came up successful when its number thrust over with the conversion successful the score line was now 24-7. Next passage of play was open expansive running from WOB it involved Luke, Jude and was finished off with a try from Aiden McGuire under the dot. This was the try of the game with the ball changing hands about six times with passes that you swear were straight out of SBW game book, leaving an easy conversion for Jay and changing the score to 31-7 – this was the last points scored by the players. The last points of the day belonged to the

referee when he awarded a penalty try to Stoke – there was no question from any of the Waimea squad when number eight Dylan Hedges couldn’t resist tackling the Stoke attacker – never mind the ball was some five metres behind them. Wally of the week this week belonged squarely to Dylan. End score was 31-14 to Waimea, the boys had did it – now all they needed was other results to go its way. But it was not to be, with Takaka beating Riwaka which pushed Waimea out of the play off contention. Waimea now met Takaka at the Jungle (Jubilee Park) this weekend where a Waimea win will push out Takaka and let Nelson into the fourth spot play off. Plenty to play for as Waimea want to finish the season on a high, get down to Jubilee Park for the 1pm kick off to support the final game for the Waimea senior club season. Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Over recent weeks there has been some great weather to get out and do some winter fishing. D’Urville Island seems to be the most popular destination. Even more so with recent episodes on Matt Watson’s TV fishing show, revealing the awesome fishery we have in the Top of the South. On Saturday there were about 35 boats fishing the kingfish and snapper grounds within a stone’s throw of each other in Stephens Passage. A few good fish were landed but it would appear that the sheer number of boats may have put the kingfish off the bite. Please remember your fishing etiquette when there are lots of other boats around to avoid any mishaps and be patient with others when drifting through the strike zone. Take only enough fish for a feed. Sustainability is the key focus needed to really look after this awesome fishery, and we don’t take it for granted by being greedy. The scallop season has also now opened and the reports are of scallops in a mediocre condition, with a lot around the 87-90cm mark. On that note, make sure you carry an approved measuring device on board and not just 2 nails in a piece of wood. Otherwise when you are greeted at the boat ramp by a MAF officer you may find yourself in hot water with incorrectly sized scallops. Some scallops had little or no roe in them and the meat size was a bit on the small side. Okiwi Bay had good numbers but they should improve on size and quality with another 5-6 weeks under their belt.
The other day I was talking Kathy, our resident expert on the subject of kayaking and I thought I would share some of her thoughts with you. If you’re sitting in your office at work, or in front of the fire at home with a million things going through your mind and can’t remember the last time you did something you really enjoyed, then it’s time to get a kayak, some fishing gear, safety gear and get onto the water. Fishing from your kayak is not only productive, but it’s physically and mentally good for you as well. As soon as I get onto my kayak, I forget about all the worries in life and just enjoy being on the water. Some of the things I’ve encountered on my fishing adventures, I’ll never forget till the day I die. I’ve been lucky enough to have had encounters with orcas and dolphins checking me out, been pulled around by sharks and other large fish before releasing them as well as watching the most amazing sunsets and sunrises. For me, I love the challenge, the serenity as well as the physical exercise. You don’t have to spend heaps of money and you don’t have to go out 15km. You can just buy a cheap kayak and start in the rivers or bays with a simple fishing rod and tackle as long as you follow the basic rules to keep safe. It’s something the whole family can enjoy. Kayak fishing can be done all year long and you’ll enjoy the element of surprise in stealthy approaches to the fish, and whether you catch the big one or a great feed it really doesn’t matter. You’ll look around and be stunned by your surroundings whatever the weather.

Vegetation control – roadside spraying in rural Aareas Registration of non-spray areas Tasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn. Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval Council will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs. Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “No Spray” list, please contact Robyn Scherer, Engineering Secretary, Tasman District Council, Phone 03 543 8524 or email – robyn.scherer@tasman.govt.nz
