Money donated to heat pool Simon Bloomberg

Swimming lessons have been heating up for Waimea Swim Club members after the club donated $20,000 to help pay for the installation of solar heating panels for the Waimea College pool. The club has been using the college pool to coach its young school-aged swimmers between December and March. Now the swimmers will be able to enjoy warmer water temperatures and a longer outdoor season thanks to the club’s donation. Club president and member of the Waimea College Board of Trustees Sue Malthus says the club had saved the $20,000 over a number of years, mostly from managing the public access to the pool on behalf of the school. Their donation covered about half the cost of the solar panel installation with the other half coming from a Canterbury Community Trust (now called Rata Foundation) grant to the school. Sue says the warmer pool is “already making a huge difference to the enjoyment of the club swimmers “The younger swimmers, who are more prone to the cold, are especially happy the temperature has increased,” she says. Richmond CBD beats Nelson’s Richmond’s central business district is outperforming its counterpart in Nelson, attracting significantly more retail spending according to new data commissioned by Nelson City Council. The data was collected by Market View during the July-September quarter and posted on the council’s website earlier this month. It shows that $59.2 million (up five per cent on last year) was spent in the Richmond CBD, compared to $37.8 million (down 3.2 per cent) in Nelson’s CBD during the quarter. The data was collated from all electronic card transactions which account for 70 per cent of total spending. It also showed how much is being spent in the retail sector, where that money is coming from and where people are spending their money. Although Richmond’s CBD

outperformed Nelson CBD by $21.4 million, wider Nelson including the city fringe, Stoke, Tahunanui and other areas attracted a combined retail spend of $111.6 million. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says she has seen the figures in the report and is not too surprised. She says there has been a steady increase in both the mall’s sales figures and foot traffic counts while the number of big retail outlets in Richmond continues to grow.

“I think they’re good, they stand out [and I think Richmond needed new signage], especially to get into the town.”

“I think they look jolly good actually, [I think they were needed] it’s not that easy to get into Richmond if you’re a visitor.”

“I think that they are a waste of money, I think they could have gone to one of the colleges and got the art group to do something which would have been very nice.”

“Not happy, [it’s a] great opportunity to steer people here and create interest, but there’s nothing iconic or significant about the actual design.”

Swim club donates $20k to heat pool would have to get out after half an hour it was too cold,” Michelle says. “Now they can stay in longer and can concentrate on the lessons better as well.” The warmer pool will also be an asset for other users including the Waimea Intermediate students and the college’s physical education and outdoor education classes. Waimea College’s head of physical education Gus Shirley says “anything that extends the length of our swimming season is a bonus”. The Waimea Swim Club uses the pool four nights a week with its volunteer coaches teaching around 50 children.

Our CBD outperforms Nelson’s FROM PAGE 1 “Our sales were up 2.3 per cent in July and foot traffic was up eight per cent, so we have had a good winter,” she says. “In September, sales and foot traffic were both up four per cent and we had 17 stores that increased sales by 10 per cent or more, with some as high as 35 percent.” Belinda says the opening of The

Warehouse in Richmond on August 28 last year would also have impacted on the figures. She says the mall’s supermarkets and fashion stores did particularly well in September. Belinda would not disclose how much of the $59.2million spent in Richmond’s CBD from July to September was spent in the mall’s 76 stores although she says that it would be “significant”.

Uniquely Nelson manager Simon Duffy says he isn’t concerned about the figures, because the retail spend in Nelson City including the city fringe is significantly higher than Richmond. “I don’t know why there is this competition with Nelson and Richmond, they are both very different destinations, Nelson has much more of a boutique feel than Richmond,” he says.

Here’s some stories from www. CLASSIC&MUSCLE CAR RESTORATION

Freak wind rips off verandah: Murray Sinclair of P&M fireplaces got a shock last week when he arrived at his shop to find the verandah blown off. The 12-metre verandah was torn off the building in a freak gust at 3.20 am. Nelson weather reported the wind reaching speeds of 69 kilometres per hour. “I couldn’t believe it, it wasn’t just some signage, it was the whole verandah, and that thing has weathered quite a few storms,” says Murray. “The gutter has rolled in on itself and dropped to the ground.”

A “great team effort” saved an elderly man and his house from a “very intense and very scary” fire that destroyed the garage on his Main Road Hope property on Monday. The 87-year-old man was asleep in his house when a fire started in his nearby garage at around 3pm. One of the man’s neighbours, Sam Harrison from the Brightwater Volunteer Rural Fire Force hosing down the remains of the gaMarianne Hart-Biggs, saw the flames and initi- rage with foam. Photo: Brittany Spencer. ated a “great team effort” that saved the day. “I was in my kitchen and I could hear this ‘bang, bang, bang’ so I stood up and looked out the window,” Marianne says. “It was a bit hazy but I just thought someone was having a burn-off so I sat down again. “Then a few minutes later I checked again and saw flames inside the garage, so I rushed out onto the road to stop the traffic and get help and dialled 111. A friend of mine was driving past and he stopped and rushed over and got the garden hose out and started hosing the house while another neighbour got the man out. “I was so worried about who was in the house. The garage was so close to the house and the fire was very quick, very intense and very scary.” Marianne says she has no doubt that the quick actions of her friend, Tony Inwood, saved the house from being burned down. She says the “two or three metre high” flames from the garage were “lapping against the house and the garbage bin was melting” from the intense heat. “When I ran out onto the road, Tony probably thought what’s this crazy woman doing now? He did a great job - everyone did an awesome job - I’m so pleased it had a happy ending.” The man was taken by St John ambulance to the Nelson Hospital where he was treated for stress and discharged. kg kg Fire fighters from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Appleby and BrightwaFresh Tegel NZ Chicken Loose Hothouse/Truss ter volunteer rural fire forces extinguished the Drumsticks/Thigh Portions fire despite a problem securing a water supply. Richmond’s chief fire officer Ralph Lonsdale says they had to wait for police to close the road to get their hose to a hydrant on the other side. Ralph also praised Tony’s quick thinking. Ralph says fire investigators would determine the cause of the fire although garages were typifor for cally full of flammable items.

Organisers hail ‘biggest A&P Show’ ever Competition helps The weekend’s Nelson A&P Show was a roaring success, say organisers. Event organiser Annette Robinson says it was the biggest show they’ve ever had. “We had upwards of 14,000 people come through, I’ve never seen two days like the ones we had,” says Annette. “There were queues of cars down Queen St just waiting to come in, and the paddocks were absolutely loaded with cars, it was really humming.” Even winds comparable to that of Wellington couldn’t damper the event as a steady stream of families continued to pour through the gates all weekend. “We didn’t expect the wind we got, it didn’t put spectators off but we did have to cancel some of the equestrian events for health and safety reasons which is really unfortunate, but thankfully nothing else was affected,” says Annette. Children were either running around looking at the animals, munching on treats or getting dizzy on rides, while the adults flocked to watch men sweat it out at the shearing, wood chopping and Strongman competitions. Traction engine enthusiast Rex Waddington came all the way up from Christchurch with his scale model Fowler to give free rides at the show. “I’ve been covered from head to toe in coal all weekend but I’ve never been happier, everyone loves the rides and I’d taken about 30-odd kids as well as their parents for rides by Saturday lunchtime.” Stoke’s Bernie Leckie says she enjoyed the weekend, “My husband and I have just been wandering around enjoying everything, it’s been lovely.”

Tapawera’s Shane Nathan had to make sure he was on his game in the open shearing competition at the Golden Edge Nelson A & P Show on Saturday. Shane wasn’t just competing against some of the best shearers from around the top of the South Island, he was being watched closely by some of the young shearers he employs in his Golden Downs shearing gang. “These competitions aren’t just about being the fastest shearer, they teach you to be clean, too. I’ve got some of my young guys along here watching so I need to make sure I get it right.” Shane, who employs seven shearers and five roustabouts, has been shearing for 11 years. He started after attending the Tetra shearing school and worked his way up from pressing wool and shearing his first 100 after about 10 months to running the gang. “It takes about five years before you get really confident, but it’s still hard work. They say a day’s shearing can be compared to running two

Shane says he tried dairy farming, fishing and saw milling when he was younger, but went shearing because it’s better money. Shearing also provides a good opportunity for people to travel around the world, with two of his young guys spending about two to three months a year shearing in Italy and Switzerland. Travers Baigent from Golden Downs won the open final.

Car thief: I teach people a lesson Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A man convicted of stealing cars in Nelson has revealed the reason he does it: to teach people a lesson. Police say there has been a huge increase in the number of vehicles stolen in Nelson and Tasman, with around half of those cars unlocked and with the keys still in the ignition. There have been several arrests in relation to car thefts over the past month and Senior Sergeant John Price says one of the “young men” arrested gave a bizarre insight into why he steals cars. “He said he wanted to give people a lesson about leaving the keys in their car – that’s how easy it is. It might be admirable that he wants to help educate the community but we think we can do it in a better way.” John says more than 50 per cent of reported car thefts are cars that are unlocked. “Some offenders walk around communities trying door handles. If they are locked they leave them alone – that’s the reality.” The thefts are happening across

A car that was stolen from the driveway of a local home was found burnt out on the Appleby river. Police say it is happening more often and urge people to lock their car. the district, but mainly from Atawhai to Richmond. They aren’t being stolen for parts or to try and sell, says John. “They’re taking it for a joy ride, using up the petrol, damaging the vehicle and then dumping it. “A car can be some people’s biggest asset, therefore it can be very traumatic. It’s the thing they have worked hard for, earning money to buy, so we really want people to try to look after it as well.” The majority of the cars are stolen from outside homes, up driveways and even in open garages. John says it is never the vic-

tim’s fault but car owners can help themselves to make sure it doesn’t happen to them. “These are not sophisticated people carrying out these crimes – they are simply taking advantage of opportunities, so by locking your car you’ll go a long way to keeping it safe.” John urges vehicle owners to lock their cars, even if they are on their own property, and says those that do will go a long way to putting off potential thieves. “It’s simple, but in many cases it works.” John says several offenders are currently going through the court system after being arrested.

544 9037 How to combat clay soils

This week we would like to talk about clay soils. In the Nelson Area we have a large amount of land that is clay based, and with that brings certain challenges. Yes, if you are a wine grower it’s wonderful, but if you want to grow a good veggie garden then your clay soil will need a little work. A good textured soil is a ‘crumbly’ one that allows the roots of your vegetables and flowers to grow through. To achieve this crumbly soil there are a few things you need to do. Clay is often good for nutrients, but we need to ‘unlock’ those nutrients to make them available to your crop. The best and most obvious solution is a good quality compost that is dug in well to around 30-40cm. The compost will break up the lumpy

clay particles and assist the water to move through the soil and avoid run-off. A very good soil conditioner is gypsum as it has the ability to loosen hard and compacted soil. It helps build deeper topsoil, improves From this soil drainage, and reduces root rot, moss and fungal diseases. It also provides calcium which strengthens cell walls, making To this plants more resistant to insects and disease. Gypsum also provides sulphur, necessary for the development of green, protein rich To this! leaves. So, if your garden is as hard as the Rock of Gibraltar after a dry spell, then it may be that it needs some work. Come and see us – we can give you all of the help you need. Business Update. Adv.

Smart phone app helps to save a life Kate Russell

Nelson police are praising a smart phone app that helped to save a life in Stoke last Wednesday evening. Officers were alerted to the scene at the Stoke tennis courts after a woman in her 60’s collapsed while playing a social tennis match and went into cardiac arrest. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly says when officers responded to the call for help they quickly realised that the woman was in need of urgent medical attention and started CPR. “They used an app on their smart phones to locate the nearest defibrillator, which was at a local supermarket,” he says. “Thankfully, they were able to get the defibrillator and successfully re-started the woman’s heart.” Senior Sergeant Blair Hall says it was only a matter of minutes from the moment the police were notified until they had a defibrillator on the scene, and the incident highlighted the value of defibrillators being kept in public places. “It’s a really good application, and

the more community organisations and businesses that have them, the better,” he says. “It certainly worked very effectively and quickly.” Blair says that the woman is still seriously ill in hospital, but without the app and quick-thinking by the officers at the scene the situation could have been a lot worse. The app, which is called ‘AED (automated external defibrillator) Locations’ can be downloaded to smart phones, or if you don’t have a smart phone, there is also a website which will tell you where defibrillators are located anywhere in the country. The website’s map shows there are 90 defibrillators in the Nelson/ Richmond area, and 18 in the Motueka/Golden Bay area. There are defibrillators located at Founders Park, NMIT, Riverside Pool, Nelson City Council, New World Nelson and Stoke, and Countdown Stoke, just to name a few. Police are encouraging people to download the app, or visit the website, www.aedlocations.co.nz.

Rising sea levels a concern for TDC Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says it’s time the government made rising sea level changes a national priority. Richard says the issue is already on the TDC’s radar but needs to be dealt with by central government. “For several years now every New Zealand council with a coastline has been debating and discussing what a future response to the possible impacts of sea level rise could be,” says Richard. “There is no doubt there is a need for a nationally consistent solution to ensure everyone is treated fairly.” Richard’s call comes after the release of

Parliamentary Commissioner for the En- tively soft structure of the Tasman coastvironment Jan Wright’s report, raising lines. “With the risks facing people’s homes what has been until now a predominantly and community infrastructure it is natural local issue to one of national importance. we want to protect those investments, but “The commissioner’s recommendation to how, at what cost, who pays? Richard says a national conversation about the issue needs to take place within the next few months, not years. “It is not going to be solved overnight, but the sooner we sit down to identify the possible solutions the sooner we can come to an acceptable community response,” says Richard.

These seven councillors continue to vote together and make it impossible for the mayor to advance her agenda. The mayor needs support. Proposals such as the Southern Link will never go ahead so long as Nelson has obstructionist councillors. Next year, ratepayers should look carefully before they reinstate those councillors who have voted as a block to hinder the proper development of the city. Dan McGuire.

Farmer feeds 3000 chickens by hand Feeding 3200 chickens and collecting their eggs, all by hand, sounds like hard work and it is, just ask Upper Moutere’s Sharon Macquet. Sharon has been busy tending to “her girls” since starting their family’s new business Willow Creek Farm last year. She and her husband Buzz initially purchased

1700 Hy-line Browns for their free-range egg operation, adding another 1500 a month ago and now says “there’s no such thing as weekends”. “We start collecting the eggs at 7am and finish by around 11.30am. We clean the eggs as we collect and then candle (inspect for imperfections over a light)

every one by hand and grade them. “We also have to close off the laying boxes and clean and vacuum them, and then feed out twice a day as well. The biggest laying day we had in the first year was 1649 eggs from 1700 birds, but at the moment we are getting around 1000 a day. “There’s no such thing as weekends off and they don’t know about public Insurance premIums IncreasIng? holidays - they just keep laying so it’s always busy.” pay one fIxed premIum for the lIfe of your polIcy. keep a close eye on the welfare of “the girls.” She also admits that automated equipment is expensive and is not in the new business’s budget just yet. Willow Creek Farm employs a local family, who job share, to help out and there’s always plenty of additional help around during the university holidays when Sharon and Buzz’s children Jason, Matt and Aimee lend a hand. Jason and Matt built the barns. Willow Creek Farms keeps the chickens in two barns, each surrounded by about a hectare of grounds. The chickens have 24hour a day access to the outdoors, although nearly all roost indoors

at night. Sharon says they decided to establish a free range operation because the chickens are happier, healthier and lay better eggs. They also aim to establish a point of difference by delivering the eggs within 48-hours of being laid, so that they are super-fresh. Sharon says Willow Creek Farm sells most of their eggs to cafes and restaurants around NelsonTasman, as well as a few retail outlets like FreshChoice Richmond and Raeward Fresh. They also donate around 40 to 60 dozen pullet eggs a week to the Salvation Army and sell seconds to pig farms.

The church is one of 30 community groups, churches, businesses and preschools which have been busy decorating their floats, cars, trailers and trucks and themselves for the annual parade. Holy Trinity Church has selected an angelic theme for the parade with children dressing up as arch, guardian and avenging angels and, of course, the angels that heralded the birth of Christ. Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says the parade will start from Edward St at midday although entertainment will start on Queen from about 11.30am. The floats and entertainers will go down Queen St and into Cambridge St with Santa’s sledge pulling into Sundial Square so he can meet the children. The floats will be judged with the top three receiving Pak ‘n Save vouchers valued at $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third. Two of Santa’s helpers from the Richmond Mall will be handing out toy reindeer antlers and Santa’s letters to children during the parade. Children can post the letter, with their home email address, into a letterbox by the mall’s information centre to get a reply from Santa.

It’s amazing what a touch of paint can do to a place, a simple flick of a brush and Wakefield Auto Services’ forecourt has been transformed into a fresh-faced space for both customers and staff. Wendy and Steve Peterson have owned the service station and adjoining workshop for nine and a half years now and both felt it was about time to upgrade their premises. The service station building itself is a fairly old structure, having been built in around 1953, and the driving force behind the improvements

was to perform strengthening within the shops walls. The forecourt building is now able to meet the current building code requirements, as well as enjoy some new additions including a new set of auto-doors, keeping their shop warm in winter and dust free from the outside forecourt. “It’s a big building, it’s cold in winter and hot in summer so hopefully with what we’ve done it will improve the working conditions for the staff as well,” says Wendy. “It’s quite amazing, the feedback we’re getting,

This is just one part of the grand plan however, and Wendy says they will be introducing further upgrades to the business in the next few years.

Wakefield Auto Services are proud to offer locals and those just passing through the village a handy collection of services, and not just automotive services either. As well as purchasing your petrol and diesel, the shop stocks everything you need to stay fueled up on the road too. We’ve all heard about the house that Jack built, but what about the house that Douglas Building Contractors built, along with a lot of support from other local trades, of course. Ange and Andrew Douglas have embarked on a project that has united businesses within the local community to create a ‘House for Hospice.’ Last year the Nelson couple, who own and operate Douglas Building Contractors, had the brilliant idea to construct a house in the Marsden Park subdivision and donate the profits from the home’s sale to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. Hospice provides a variety of specialist care services for people who have a life-limiting ill-

ness, supporting them, their families and carers through illness, death and bereavement. Their services are provided at no charge to patients and their families, and are available to everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, culture and gender, with care being provided to people in their own homes, aged-care facilities and in the Hospice In-patient Unit. A lot of people have experienced first hand the vital services that Hospice offers, either with their family members or friends, which made it the perfect cause for Ange and Andrew who wished to focus their support on a local charity, keeping the profits within the community.

The house’s construction was possible thanks to many generous businesses and individuals and benefited a great local charity.

There’s no doubt the project has required significant financial commitment from suppliers and contractors, who have contributed to the project by working at cost, holding off on payment until after the house is sold, or donating their time or materials. Construction on the house started in June this year after Marsden Park developers provided the section at a lowered price and the Nelson City Council agreed to postpone the building consent fees. It’s taken around 22 weeks to complete the home, including landscaping, and everyone involved has done a great job to get the building ready for the November deadline. Now the 230 square metre home is ready to welcome its new owners and Andrew is extremely proud of

what the House for Hospice team has achieved. “I think it’s great, it’s a testament to a lot of Nelson businesses who have come on board with it. A lot of them have incurred costs and held costs for a long time,” he says. “It’s great to see people helping people and a lot of generous businesses and individuals.” The house features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas and a double garage, plus, it will be high-spec with added extras including tiled showers, and a tristone kitchen bench. Now that construction has been completed, the home will be opened up to the public this weekend so that everyone can see the hard work that has gone into this special project. Starting from the ground and working

up, there are a huge number of charitable local businesses to thank – including ITM Nelson who delivered the frames; the concrete floor was poured with the help of Concrete Pump Services, Carter and Sons Concrete, Concrete Cutter and Higgins; the windows were installed by Nulook Nelson and Pink Fit Nelson installed the insulation. Galbraith Group took care of the exterior with plastering and painting, the teams from Plumbing Services, Richmond Locks and Alarms and Telfer Electrical also all played a vital role in the home’s construction. “We just want say thanks to everyone, for supporting us as a business and getting in behind and helping a good cause. Senior chefs cook up a storm Senior Chef is proof you’re never too old to learn something new. The educational cooking programme is designed for people over the age of 65 who are living on their own or with a spouse. The course gives them the opportunity to learn about nutrition as well as easy recipes that can be cooked for one or two people. With a previous background as a dietician, coordinator Annette Nistor says she had known about the programme, which originated in Christchurch, for some time, but didn’t realise it wasn’t happening in the Nelson region. “There are

a lot of people on their own in the community and a number of those people can easily become socially isolated. One of the things we know [that happens] when you become socially isolated is your interest in food declines, because you’re cooking for one which is harder than cooking for two.” Working alongside Annette is Leanne Craig and last year they began offering the free, eightweek course, using the commercial kitchen at the Headingly Centre. So far, five groups have taken part in the course with around eight people in each class. Participants start each session

with a lesson on nutrition before pairing up to cook a lunch and then sitting down as a group to eat it. They are also given a cook book, Cooking for the Older Person, to help them create meals at home. Last Thursday, all past participants came together at Headingly Centre for a Golden Dinner, but this time they enjoyed having the meal put on for them by Annette, Leanne and fellow volunteers. The next Senior Chef course will start in February and anyone interested in taking part in this or future courses is welcome to call Grace Church on 544 7071.

Hospital picking up on family violence

Burns, fractures and bruises are just some of the signs of family violence seen by Nelson Hospital staff, who have identified 198 cases of family violence since January this year. Nelson Hospital has had guidelines for identifying family violence cases but those have expanded significantly since the nationwide Violence Intervention Programme (VIP) was introduced to district health boards in 2007. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board now has two family violence coordinators who train staff to recognise the signs of family violence and ensure that the relevant social agencies become involved. Nelson co-ordinator for VIP Gina Lyon says the programme has resulted in an increased awareness of the social issues that impact on health. She says "family violence wasn't always seen as a health problem" but now that's changed dramatically. "People would come in with a broken leg and we'd address the broken leg and not what else might be going on with it," Gina

Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

says. "It was a very medical model that was not really looking at the social issues that might be impacting on their health." Although the VIP programme is focused on child protection and partner abuse, the board's director of allied health, Hilary Exton, says that screening for elder abuse is also being introduced. Hilary says they "have to be able to cover all types" of family violence and have "good policies, procedures, training and auditing" in place to ensure the programme is successful. Hilary says VIP was initially implemented in the emergency department, paediatric in-patients, maternity, public health, alcohol and drugs and mental health, because they see the most cases of family violence. It has been so successful in those departments it is now being rolled out into other areas of the hospital and its community services. "It's working well and we have to

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. acknowledge how well the staff support the programme. The nurses and medical staff and social workers involved in the programme are doing a great job." Gina says it is now standard procedure to screen all women, admitted to the key departments, for partner abuse. She says women are responding positively to the programme because they "trust that health professionals will know how to

respond appropriately and help them through the process". "They are really accepting of it. It might not be them but they understand it might be someone who is a victim of abuse and they say 'it's not me, thanks for asking'.' Although many cases of family violence are obvious, Gina says staff are trained to "pick up indicators" in the less obvious cases. Identifying the increasing number of elder abuse cases can

be especially challenging. "We see bruises with finger marks, burns made by cigarettes and whip marks from jug chords. Fortunately, there's not a lot in Nelson but we do see it and staff are really good at picking that up "But sometimes it's not as obvious - it might be something the patient says or how a parent and child are interacting. Elder abuse can be quite difficult because often the elderly feel like it is their lot and don't say anything. "We've identified cases of financial abuse after finding out they haven't been taking their medicine. When we ask them why they say because a family member who takes care of the finances might not be giving them money." However, Hilary stresses that family violence is a community issue and the hospital is just one of many agencies working together to combat the problem. "Our programme has close collaboration with police, Child Youth and Family, Women's refuge and Stopping Violence Services. No one service can address this problem and there's some really good work happening out there and that's really positive."

As we all look forward to the Christmas Break your community association is still following up all the items we covered last month. We have been advised that the foundations for the Village Green picnic table will be dug out and a concrete pad poured next week and we can then expect to follow up with the table very shortly after that. I am sure that it will become well used over the summer months. We got some very good support for the proposed 40 kmh speed limit in Ellis Street from users of the Brightwater facebook page. It is worth noting that the difference in travel times using a 40kmh and 50 kmh over the entire length of Ellis St is only 17 seconds!

We wish to advise the Brightwater Community that a new flag pole has been donated and is to be erected in the grounds behind the Memorial gates at the Brightwater Public Hall. A further announcement on the raising of our national flag will be made shortly, so that the community may attend. Our Christmas meeting will be held on Monday 7 December. Present will be a special guest - Rose Biss from TDC will be in attendance to explain the proposed 10 year development for Brightwater. All are welcome to attend. The venue is the staffroom at the Brightwater School, commencing at 7.30pm. Andy McQueen, Chairperson Brightwater Community Association.

Christmas fun at Glo-lites Saturday 12 December from 5-30 to 9pm. Brightwater Glo-lites is a highlight on the Brightwater Community calendar. The event is held at Snowden’s Bush with local fire brigade, school, kindergarten and church coming together to provide a fun filled evening of entertainment. Come along and enjoy a picnic tea with live music and Christmas carols. Food, refreshment and glo-lites are available for purchase, or bring your own, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Santa will be making an appearance again this year.

Christmas at Brightwater Community Anglican Church It seems every year the Christmas madness begins earlier. I think I saw the first shop Christmas decorations going up at Labour weekend! As we move into December, the pace will pick up as people do everything that they think they need for the perfect Christmas. Perhaps the best thing we can do to get it right is stop and remember the bloke that said “love your neighbour”, and remember that relationships are more important than stuff.

Take time to tell others how much they mean to you, and perhaps even give them a hug. Another thing that bloke said was to remember life is not all about you, acknowledge there is a higher power and let that knowledge influence your life. At your local Brightwater Community Anglican Church we have a number of things that we are offering the community to help reflect on this, culminating on Thursday 24 December at 10pm with Christmas Evensong being held in the old church of St Paul’s. A Traditional Christmas Service on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, will be held at 8.30am at St Michaels Church and at 10am at St Paul’s Church Hall on Christmas Day you can attend a Contemporary Christmas Service with Communion. May you have a blessed, unrushed Christmas, Rev Martin Harrison. Wanderers Rugby 7’s Wanderers Taylors Contracting 7’s team capped off an excellent year for the Wanderers Rugby Club, recently winning the Tasman Club 7’s Tournament held in Motueka. The team, in their new playing strip, looked the part and were lead by co captains Jesse Pitman and Steven Soper, determined to reach this goal after winning both the Tasman and Nelson Club 15’s trophies. Through their standout performances on the day, Jesse and Steve along with Sione Holani, Tone Ng Shiu and Angus Gibbons were selected in the Tasman 7’s training squad. The South Island 7’s tournament is being held in Timaru next weekend and Tasman will be going all out to qualify for the Nationals tournament. There is a good culture within the team that has been built through attending ongoing gym/fitness sessions at the Taylors Community

Gym in Brightwater. The Wanderers club have an Academy group for rugby players that train two to three times a week; to work on fitness, skills and strength. The Wanderers 7’s team is now working towards playing in the Woodend 7’s tournament held in Christchurch in 2016. Community Fun at Wanderers Sports Club The Wanderers Sports Club would like to invite you to come along to the Clubrooms on Friday 4 December from 5pm onwards to have some fun, enjoy a BBQ tea, and meet the people in your community. Activities will include beach cricket, touch rugby, barrel rolling, water games, lolly scramble and a special appearance from Father Christmas. Don’t miss out! Wakefield Bowling Club Brightwater resident Linda Sisterson has been selected for the Nelson Representative team to play in the Higgins Shield in Greymouth at the end of November along with clubmates Margaret Eames and Di Holland. Linda has won the Wakefield Club Women’s Open Pairs Championship with Di Holland and the Women’s Triples with Margaret and Di. Community Bowls continues on Thursdays into December, 6 – 8pm, all welcome, adults $5, children free. It will include the Grant’s whiskey “corner to corner” on 3 and 10 December. For more details phone Tony on 541 8316. Community Bowls is played on the excellent synthetic green. Special thanks to the green keepers, John van der Laan and Harry Beckers, who are both Brightwater residents and well known for their work around Brightwater as well as at the Wakefield Bowling Club.

Vandalism on the rise Do you know what your children are doing after school and into the evening? It is a concern that wilful damage is being done within the Brightwater community. The sports fields, buildings and skate park areas at the Brightwater Domain have all suffered damage recently as a result of children climbing on building roofs, breaking guttering, deliberately smashing bikes, scooters, outside furniture, leaving rubbish and spreading rocks on grounds that are to be mowed, breaking windows, graffiti and leaving rubbish everywhere. If you recognise these graffiti tags left on buildings around the domain last Friday night, or have any information about who may be responsible, can you please contact Ph 542 3444.

The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club day for November was a great afternoon, especially for the Meek family who are all very active fishers in the club. Twelve-year-old Ollie took out the Fish of the Month trophy, as he had submitted a great range of fish for the club competition. Ollie fishes at every chance and is also a fan of making up his own rigs used to target a wide range of species. His two favourites to fish with are either a sabiki, or a stray line out the back, which tends to be very effective. And to top it for the family, Ollie's mum Tracey took out the lucky draw cash prize for the club day. The water temp is rising nicely now, which is seeing some nice sized fish arrive in the bay. Interested in fishing? Why not come join this great club to meet other like minded fishos

Christmas appeal hoping to double donations The Richmond KMart Wishing Tree Appeal is aiming for a double-double, with organisers of the store’s popular Christmas appeal hoping to collect 2000 gifts. The Richmond store opened in November 2013 and received 400 gifts for the appeal in its first year. Last year, that number doubled to 864 and this year the organisers of the appeal are aiming to double that again, setting a target of 2000 gifts. “Our aim has been to double it each year,” Richmond KMart staff member Alicia McKitterick says. “Last year we had 864 so this year we will be

happy with around 1800, but we’d love to reach 2000.” The appeal, which is held in KMart stores across Australia and New Zealand, collects gifts and donations to support families in need at Christmas. It is New Zealand’s largest Christmas appeal, last year receiving 42,273 gifts as well as cash donations. Alicia says people donating gifts need to take a tag from the Wishing Tree and write a recommended age group and gender for the gift before placing under the tree. The tags are designed so that the donors can take half of the tag

to hang on their own Christmas tree at home. She says gifts can also be left at the express drop-off point at the front of the store. The gifts are distributed to families in-need throughout the NelsonTasman region by the Salvation Army. Gifts can be purchased from any retailer, not just KMart, or be handmade, but no second-hand gifts are accepted. People can also donate to the appeal by taking one of the special Christmas baubles from the tree and scanning it at the counter or by going online to kmart.co.nz/wishingtree

One of Nelson’s most experienced triathletes, Jon Linyard, showed he is on the comeback trail after winning his age group and finishing third overall in the Tineli Tri at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Jon has always shown plenty of speed in the first two disciplines of the triathlon but has been battling to regain speed on the run after suffering a series of frustrating injuries. But on Sunday morning, the 40-44 age grouper showed he is almost fully fit recording a fast 1hr 12min for the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. “I’m just pleased to be back, Jon says. “It’s neat to be physically fit again and competing. However, Jon says the standout performance of the day came from Waimea College athlete Hayden Squance, who won the race in 1hr 4min 13sec. Hayden exited the water in just 13min 29sec, completed the road cycle in 32min 17sec and then blitzed the 5km run in 18min 26sec. “That was a significant race for him, Jon says. “He is much stronger this season and is putting it all together - he has improved his endurance and his technique. “He ran 18min 26sec on that rugged course which is exceptional. His swim was also fast - he’s been pushing Thomas

Renee Hunt continued her impressive progress by winning the women’s race in 1hr 19min 36sec. The 40-44 age group athlete completed an 18min 28sec swim, 38min 2sec cycle and 23min 5sec run on her way to

beating second-placed Frances Riley by almost two minutes. The Tineli Tri is a selection event for the ITU Sprint World Championships held in Cozumel, Mexico in September next year. There was also a super-sprint triathlon and duathlon options. Cameron Jones won the men’s sprint duathlon, Luke Clotworthy won the men’s super sprint duathlon, Melanie Chick won the super sprint triathlon and Hunta Sutherland won the super sprint duathlon.

Herbicide application will also be used to control pest plants within waterway management corridors. For any objections, queries or comments on the operation please contact Giles Griffith, Rivers and Coastal Engineer, Ph. 03 543 8400 or Email: giles.griffith@tasman.govt.nz

Consent Type, Application Number and Proposal: Land Use (Application RM150755) Erection of an off-site plinth sign for the Allied Petroleum truck stop facility in Artillery Place. Submissions due: 4.30 pm on Friday 27 November 2015.

Community Notices Richmond & Districts Information Centre With the busy season arriving, volunteers are urgently required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road. Successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers initially before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large data base. They should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or Sally Symonds Ph. 03 542 3983 (rosters) for further details. Authorised by Keith Chaplin, Volunteer co-ordinator, Ph. 03 547 3116.
