Money donated to heat pool Simon Bloomberg

Swimming lessons have been heating up for Waimea Swim Club members after the club donated $20,000 to help pay for the installation of solar heating panels for the Waimea College pool. The club has been using the college pool to coach its young school-aged swimmers between December and March. Now the swimmers will be able to enjoy warmer water temperatures and a longer outdoor season thanks to the club’s donation. Club president and member of the Waimea College Board of Trustees Sue Malthus says the club had saved the $20,000 over a number of years, mostly from managing the public access to the pool on behalf of the school. Their donation covered about half the cost of the solar panel installation with the other half coming from a Canterbury Community Trust (now called Rata Foundation) grant to the school. Sue says the warmer pool is “already making a huge difference to the enjoyment of the club swimmers “The younger swimmers, who are more prone to the cold, are especially happy the temperature has increased,” she says. Richmond CBD beats Nelson’s Richmond’s central business district is outperforming its counterpart in Nelson, attracting significantly more retail spending according to new data commissioned by Nelson City Council. The data was collected by Market View during the July-September quarter and posted on the council’s website earlier this month. It shows that $59.2 million (up five per cent on last year) was spent in the Richmond CBD, compared to $37.8 million (down 3.2 per cent) in Nelson’s CBD during the quarter. The data was collated from all electronic card transactions which account for 70 per cent of total spending. It also showed how much is being spent in the retail sector, where that money is coming from and where people are spending their money. Although Richmond’s CBD

outperformed Nelson CBD by $21.4 million, wider Nelson including the city fringe, Stoke, Tahunanui and other areas attracted a combined retail spend of $111.6 million. Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says she has seen the figures in the report and is not too surprised. She says there has been a steady increase in both the mall’s sales figures and foot traffic counts while the number of big retail outlets in Richmond continues to grow.
