Carol’s meal ideas for the masses Jacob Page
November also pulling the pin. However an idea to prepare fresh, nutritious, cost effective meals for people who will be staying at home as the country goes into lockdown, looks set to offer the people of Nelson and Tasman a much-needed community service. “We were gearing up for the biggest conference we had ever done which was 700 people on the 31st of March and that got pulled on Monday. “It hit me very hard,” she says. “I took a mental health day and
Carol Shirley is determined to keep her community fed one meal at a time. The owner of Beachside Conference and Events and Gourmet Catering saw her business “grind to a halt” last Monday as Coronavirus forced events she was catering to cancel or postpone, costing her hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process. All her events have been cancelled until the end of April with some events scheduled up until
then the idea to do these meals came out of that. “I very much think you sink or swim in these situations and I’m no sinker.” The 17 meal options ranging from $12 to $15 depending on if you would like a four-portion family option or individual options. Chef Lincoln Womersley designed the menu which ranges from classics like curried sausages and beef nachos to favourites like roast of the day or Carol’s famous smoked fish seafood chowder with garlic cob loaf to the
more contemporary lemon and basil barbecue chicken, smashed potato, salad and minted yoghurt or braised beef cheeks with garlic mash and peppered cabbage. “It’s restaurant styled food, made fresh, at a good price-point because we know everyone is feeling it right now but we have the classics that the older people know and love as well.” “There’s been a lot of support already and there’s a great community vibe even just people asking if we are OK. “We are damn lucky that we live
in a village,” she says. “The support that has come back has been huge. “I think everyone is trying to step up and help each other and that’s been heartening to see. “We’ll ride this storm with these meals and if there is a demand there when things get back to normal, we’d consider continuing it.” People can order online at www. beachsidenelson.co.nz or call 035457857 People can pay online, pay on pick up in cash or they have a mobile EFTPOS machine available. Deliveries are being done as far afield as Motueka and emergency frozen meals will be on hand for those who need it.
