Wakefield crossings deemed unsafe Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Concerned Wakefield residents are campaigning the New Zealand Transport Agency for a safety upgrade to three road crossings on SH6 after several near misses involving school children and trucks recently. The issue is the central refuge at the Pigeon Valley, Faulkners Bush and Arrow Street crossings aren’t big enough for more than a few people, add in a bike, buggy or scooter and it’s dangerous territory. Mum-of-three Jenny Lines, who is fronting the Wakefield Road Crossings campaign, says, “It can be absolute mayhem some days when school kids are crossing, the cars are spooked by the sheer volume of people. Sometimes the entire road comes to a standstill

to let them all cross, which creates the potential danger of a truck crashing into a queue of stationary cars. “All we want is to be able to cross without putting pedestrians or motorists in danger. The new subdivision, under development off George Fyfe Way, will add to the problem and make it worse.” As Wakefield’s population and traffic flow have increased significantly since the days when the crossings were first put in, they just aren’t adequate enough to cope with modern day living. The group has given two major presentations to Tasman District Council and the NZTA, one which showed visuals, concerns, suggested improvements, and possible funding avenues. The other gave results from a truck survey which the group

Wakefield road deemed unsafe for pedestrians fRoM PAGE 1 conducted to gain the drivers’ perspectives. Suggestions for safer crossings include making the central reservation wider or an ‘S’ shape with a cage around it to give more space for people to congregate; a zebra crossing; or an electronic speed change sign. The ultimate solution, however, would be an underpass like the one at Lord Rutherford Road in Brightwater. This would solve the issue for pedestrians and traffic. Tasman District Council are supportive with councillor for the Moutere-Waimea Ward, Christeen Mackenzie, calling Jenny “inspirational”. “I’m all for the upgrades,” says Christeen. “It reminds

me of the power of communities when they work together then advocate for change. This can result in solutions which make our communities better places.” A safety assessment has been carried out by the NZTA, and Top of the South System Manager Andrew James says, “We are hoping to put in some short-term safety measures such as improving signage and repainting road markings.” The NZTA are also looking into systems used nationally and whether they can be applied here. “We are not just fussy parents,” says Jenny. “This is an accident waiting to happen.” It’s just a matter of time.”

Education funding announced Jacqui Rawson

The education Minister unveiled funding for school building projects across the South Island at Waimea College last week. “This is a big growth area and we know we have to keep working really hard to keep ahead of the growth,” said Education Minister Chris Hipkins. “As a frequent visitor to Nelson I can understand why people want to live here,”says Chris. The funding is part of the Government’s latest investment of $164 million to build new classrooms and upgrade schools around the country. “You guys are in the position where we’re trying to do both for you, so we’re trying to deal with some outdated buildings, and we’re trying to give you more space as well,” said Chris. Seven million dollars has been marked for 11 permanent roll-growth classrooms at four schools to ensure that they have the space they need. One of those schools is Waimea College which is receiving four new classrooms as part of that $7m funding. Tasman School in Upper Moutere and Nayland College are also receiving funding for short term classrooms. “Families rightly expect their children to be able to learn in warm comfortable classrooms.”

michelle.westrupp@summit.co.nz The pandemic has helped force the hands of Blair Campbell into making a career change from tourism to horticulture. Blair spent 23 years in the tourism sector as a ski instructor and pilot who flew tourists around Queenstown’s iconic locations, and he had never given much thought to the horticulture sector. “I had been unaware of how big and important the horticulture industry is for Nelson/Tasman and New Zealand,” says Blair. The tourism industry, which had been progressing as a thriving world market, has been heavily affected by this year’s pandemic. Blair had already moved to the Tasman region and was working in a self-employed capacity within tourism when Covid-19 hit. He says, “two weeks into lockdown, I saw this job advertised and applied.” Covid career-changer, Blair is now a Wai-West pipfruit block supervisor and has no regrets over the career change. “I realised over lock-down this was an industry [horticulture]

Mika checks her blood sugar before eating, and then calculates how many carbohydrates she will have. From that she knows how much insulin to inject. This must be done before she eats because her blood sugar can rise very quickly once she eats. Belinda says that while others count calories, they count carbs. “Food is numbers to me now,” says Belinda. Mika understands the need for

insulin. It’s protecting her future. If she lets her sugar levels get too high, too frequently, she risks blindness and organ failure later in life. Life has changed in many ways but Mika, now eleven, joins in everything and enjoys sport, walking the dog and sleepovers. “I would definitely call myself a happy person,” says Mika. But she does get annoyed at times and wish that she could be a different person. Sometimes she thinks that when she’s older she will find a cure for diabetes, but she knows that’s a pretty big dream.

Teaching, learning, old-young Jenny Nicholson Menzshed and Mitre 10 have joined together to give primary students a taste of woodwork. The Workbox, New Zealand’s first mobile hard materials classroom, debuted at Richmond Primary School earlier this month. Menzshed volunteers worked alongside the children to help each of them make a set of bookends using materials and tools from the box. “Doing this stuff is fun,” said Isabella-Rose Perenise.

Isabella-Rose was helped by George Inglis, president of Waimea Menzshed. “I grew up during the war and dad taught me woodwork and metalwork skills,” says George Now he’s passing those skills on. And the twenty fully-engaged children were loving hammering and sanding to create something themselves. The Workbox is also being used for community projects. After two days at Richmond school, Menzshed volunteers helped renovate a house for Habitat for Humanity.

Deepwater ships are out for weeks at a time and need to keep medical supplies onboard to meet varying medical situations. For Talley’s, it’s the Queen Street Pharmacy that is keeping them supplied, even during Covid-19. “As a food producer, Talley’s was an essential business that continued to work and so still needed us as their medical supplier during the lockdown,” says Queen Street Pharmacy owner, Sue Morris. Covid-19 disrupted the global medicine supply meaning shortages in New Zealand of several medicines including Paracetamol. This saw the Government bring in monthly dispensing, and an increase in the dispensary’s workload. “We have supplied all of Talley’s deepwater fishing vessels for about eight years. “We supply things like plasters, bandages, seasickness tablets and patches, and even dental fillings in case a temporary filling is needed to be done on board.” If the boats don’t come into Nelson, Queen Street Pharmacy still provide supplies to Talley’s head office and they transport the supplies to wherever the ves-

Sue says Covid-19 bought new challenges and a lot of uncertainty in retail for many weeks, so they are grateful to clients like Talley’s who were “essential” businesses able to operate during lockdown. The pharmacy also had some contracts with rest homes, local schools, sports clubs and forestry companies, which have greatly helped business this year as retail continues to recover after lockdown. “We were fortunate that we were able to continue trading throughout lockdown. How-

ever, while the dispensary was crazy busy, the retail side of the pharmacy took a big hit. We had a huge demand for masks and sanitisers but the drop in the retail business for periods this year has been tough. Morris says retail is now improving. “People are gaining more confidence to come out and shop, and we really appreciate the support of the community,” she says. “We have some big promotional events planned, which we are looking forward to. These include facial events, makeover days and our annual Christmas shopping extravaganza.”

A needle with every meal When eight-year-old Mika went to the doctor because she was losing weight and going to the bathroom a lot, she had no idea she would end up at the hospital with a diagnosis of diabetes. A finger prick test showed Mika’s blood sugar was 33. Normal is 5-8. “Mum got me to sit in the car while she talked to the doctor. When she came out she was crying and I thought I was going to die,” says Mika. Mika and her mum Belinda didn’t know what type one diabetes was. Belinda’s reaction was to think she was a terrible parent who had caused her daughter to be unwell by what she had fed her. This month is diabetes awareness month and Diabetes New Zealand has the slogan ‘Love, don’t judge.’ Amanda Deans, Diabetes youth service branch coordinator said there is a public perception that diabetes is caused by bad diet. “We want to change the narrative and move away from blame language,” says Amanda. “No food is off limits, kids need to be kids,” she said. The major life change is that Mika now has insulin injec-

Working together for dream job Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Helen Belton has her dream job, working with animals and doing a bit of gardening. But eighteen months ago things were not looking so good for her. Helen had been out of work and realised she had barriers to employment. Reduced sight and hearing, anxiety and depression, saw her referred to Workbridge, an organisation that specialises in finding employment for people with illnesses or disabilities. They worked alongside her to find employment that suited her. “I got my dream job,” says Helen. Charlotte Botha, of Spring Grove Kennels, approached Workbridge after interviewing five or six people without finding

someone she felt would be able to help her run the kennels. “It’s so important that I get the right person because they need to be able to see which dogs will get along with each other. Otherwise we would end up with a dog fight,” says Charlotte. Charlotte said Helen interviewed well and is beautiful and enthusiastic. “Helen remembers the animals’ names and their temperaments and has totally worked out perfectly,” says Charlotte. Helen’s days are spent with the animals and cleaning up their spaces. One great part of the job is exercising the dogs in the swimming pool. She can have up to 15 dogs in the pool at one time, so really does need to know which dogs mix well together. Helen said she is the happiest she has been in the past fifteen years. She still

has her moments but is more stable than she has been for a long time. “Getting this job is like my dream come true,” says Helen. It’s pretty much a dream come true for the Workbridge staff too, as they work hard to see people settled into a job they love. They work with clients for two years, from teaching interview skills to supporting them for a year after placement. “Our role isn’t just finding them a job that suits them, it’s supporting them in their placement so they will be successful in the future,” says Workbridge employment consultant Andy Pippen. Helen is just one of their success stories, many of which they share on their weekly radio programme Beyond the Bridge, which is on Fresh FM Tuesday at 9.30 am.

Every year, for the past 12, McGlashen’s have provided $1000 for the support of a student 16 years of age or younger from the Nelson Tasman region. “Every year I put it out to any student within the region to apply,” says Andrew McGlashen. The students then apply in relation to whatever is their chosen field of excellence. And these areas of excellence can be anything from sports to art or academia. “We’ve had children applying who were doing well in swimming, theatre and music over the years,” says Andrew. The chosen student receives the $1000 towards the advancement of their field in whichever area they require it, whether it’s for something like flights or supplies. Harry Pugh area of excellence is tennis and he has won 5 national titles for 14-years and under. He will use the money to go to tournaments, for things like entrance fees and flights. “It’s a massive buzz to see what is happening with the up-and-coming kids in our area,” says Andrew. “It’s a great insight into the talent in the area and even if students aren’t the recipient of the sponsorship, you become aware of what they’re achieving and it’s great to monitor their progress,” he says. Crafting from the heart Jacqui Rawson The Pretty Crafty Market takes on different meanings for stallholders that become involved and, for some, what they create comes via encouragement from what sits in their hearts. When stallholder Karen Cooper’s mum died in England, Karen couldn’t bring herself to leave her mum’s collection of greeting cards on the footpath, in fact, she got a friend to rescue them before the recycling truck arrived. The cards came back to New Zealand with her and became the basis of her craft stall at the next Pretty Crafty Market. “I began turning them into gift tags, new cards, pictures and decorations,’ she says. “I also brought back several rolls of old wallpaper I found that was leftover from my childhood bedroom. “I made little pictures out of it and they are much loved - one customer in particular, a fellow stall holder, has bought several.” Karen says it was such a great feeling to give the items a new lease of

ahead. The market has had a surge in people appying to be stallholders and Karen believes that’s partly down to people getting their creative juices flowing again thanks toockdown. “Many people turned to crafting during lockdown realising the positive effect these activities can have on their mental health, especially in stressful times,” says Karen. Their November Christmas Market, which took place last weekend, was booked out by keen crafters and so they’re holding another market in December in perfect time for last-minute Christmas shopping. The hope is to set the market up as a monthly event if the markets continue to be popular. “I think will be a great thing for Richmond as we donate the door money to a different local cause each time,” says Karen. The next Pretty Crafty Market will be held on the 13th December at the Richmond Town Hall, 9 Cambridge Street, Richmond.

“Helpers needed for Christmas” 4 November 2020

The decision has been made to cancel this year’s Brightwater Carols in the Park at the Wanderers Sports Ground due to a lack of response from volunteers required to help run the Christmas bash. “We are extremely sad that we’ve had to scrap the event and hope to come back next year for another shot at it,” says club manager Diane Drogemuller. “It seems to be the numbers attending have got less as years go on,” she says. “People are extra busy and with the threat of Covid reappearing, it’s changed people’s outlook on things.” “Volunteer carers needed” 18 November 2020

Thanks to last week’s story in the Waimea Weekly, Age Concern have already had two potential volunteers come forward to offer their services as respite carers for their essential Carer Relief Service. The service provides much-needed time out for carers who look after housebound loved ones. Volunteers visit for a morning or afternoon a week to allow the carer, usually a partner, parent or family member, to go for a coffee or just run errands they wouldn’t normally have the chance to do. If you think you’d be able to help, either short or long term, contact Susan Arrowsmith at Age Concern on 03 544 7624 ext 3.

When the Hosie family from Brightwater decided to knock down their plaster wall and replace it with a wooden fence, they could never have imagined what lay in store for them. “As soon as the tradies started to dig, you could see a vision of yellow buckets spilling out,” says mum-of-two Alei-

sha. “The more they knocked down, the more buckets they uncovered. It was unreal.” It’s thought a previous owner had self-built the wall by filling dozens of 20 litre canola oil buckets with river rocks, then covering them with plaster. Matt Thompson from Fence It Nelson, says, “I’d never seen anything like it before. The wall ran around the entire pe-

rimeter of the property. “We ended up filling five skips and a truck. There must’ve been over 100 buckets all up.” “It was chaos,” says Aleisha. “So we went away until the buckets were removed. “We can see the funny side and whoever built it did a good job as it was up for around 20 years. The neighbours now call our place the Minion House!”

Barbara Brown, having done some Christmas shopping at the Queen Street Pharmacy, is putting her entry form in for the chance to win the $5000, part of the Shop&Win competition. The Queen Street Pharmacy are one of the 20 businesses in Richmond with the magical Shop&Win competition boxes where customers can place their entry form to be in for the chance to win the $5000. The competition ends on the 2nd of December so there’s only one week left to make the most of the 20 businesses and get entry forms in. The winner will be drawn on the December 11th and published in the Waimea Weekly on December 16th. To find out which businesses are involved in the Shop&Win competition check out the list provided each week in the Waimea Weekly. Photo: Jacqui Rawson

POWER LINES SAFETY FOR OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE If you’re checking or cleaning gutters and downpipes, painting the roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near the connection of the power lines to your house it’s important to know what to do to stay safe. Sometimes the power line can cross your property and drop quite low, or go across other structures such as a garage or a shed. Be aware of the location of the service line to your home when you’re planning how to do a job. If you’re planting trees, building fences or doing jobs on something tall in your driveway it’s always important to look up and around you to see where power lines are and keep away from them. If you’re catching up on home maintenance but working around electricity there are a few things to watch out for. Any work around electricity lines can be dangerous. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe while you do common jobs around your property.

If you need to carry out work near your service line you can have the power disconnected temporarily for safety. The safety disconnection service can be provided by one of Network Tasman’s approved contractors, listed on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/new-connections WASHING WALLS NEAR METER BOXES Remember, water and electricity don’t mix. So if you’re waterblasting your external walls keep away from the meter box. Water inside the meter box can cause problems. TREE TRIMMING AROUND LINES Be aware of the danger of trees connecting with the service line that goes from power poles on the street to your property. If you think your trees are getting too close to the line then it’s important to get the right advice and help to trim them back. Option 1: You can contact a network trained arborist to take care of the work as they’re trained to carry out this type of work safely. There is a list of network trained arborists on our website (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/trees-power-lines) Option 2: The power can be temporarily disconnected using the safety disconnection service so you or your contractor (e.g., a gardener) can do the work safely. (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/keep-yourself-safe). If you have a question you can email the specialists in our team at trees@networktasman.co.nz. We’re happy to provide advice to help keep you safe.

BROKER’S ORIGINAL PREMIUM DRY GIN OR NEW BROKER’S PINK LONDON DRY GIN

Creators Martin and Andy Dawson chose the image of a bowler-hatted gentlemen -an archetypal stockbroker to reflect the fact that historically England is the home of gin. Broker’s is a seriously good gin made in FOR MATES! a 200 year old distillery in the heart of England using a traditional copper pot-still. The recipe is as old as the distillery. A quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from English wheat is redistilled with ten traditional botanicals, creating a gin of outstanding flavour and smoothness.

Waimea Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

“We are very grateful to local businesses and organisations and members of the community for their continued support over the last 15 years,” says Steve. The newspaper is based in Richmond and serves the majority of the Tasman region, delivering every Wednesday over 12,000 papers to homes and stores from Richmond to south of Murchison, including 5000 rural properties - farms, lifestyle blocks and small towns. “Recently we became the only newspaper left to fully cover this area. And with the growth in the region, we continue to grow.”

Sporting and event sponsorships

The Waimea Weekly has always been actively involved in the community, providing sponsorships and charitable donations whenever possible. To name a few clubs, organisations and events it has sponsored over the years – Nelson Giants, Waimea College volleyball teams, Wakefield and Richmond Bowling Clubs, Greenacres Golf Club, Banardoes, Salvation Army, Walk with Us Charitable Trust fundraisers, and the 2019 Nelson Hospitality Awards. In addition, Waimea Weekly provides free

promotion every week to a number of non-profit groups and organistions. “We’re here to help our community,” says Steve “and to work with every business and organisation in this area to help our readers get involved.” Strong bonds with ‘sister’ papers

In 2010, Steve and Jenny founded The Nelson Weekly, along with Andrew and Sarah Board, and although they are no longer co-owners of the Nelson publication, they still work closely with them for the benefit of advertisers and news articles across the re-

gion. The Motueka Guardian and The Marlborough Weekly are also included in this close relationship between papers, this means that businesses who wish to advertise over the top of the South Island, can benefit from multi paper advertising buys. In June 2020, the publishers of the Nelson Weekly and the Waimea Weekly joined forces once again, this time to offer a property publication for people wanting to sell their home via the region’s top real estate agencies. The new product, namely The Property Weekly, was launched, featuring property listings from some of the region’s top agencies like Bayleys, Harcourts, Ray White, Mike Pero and more. With stands in popular locations, in the City Centre Arcade, Queen St Richmond (Bayleys, Mike Pero, Ray White, Harcourts) Supermarkets, including Fresh Choice in Richmond Mall and more, the magazines have been flying off the stands. Effective advertising and news coverage

“We can offer some great deals for businesses and organisations that want to reach a lot of people quickly and effectively,” says Jenny. The Waimea Weekly is now the media market leader offering the largest targeted audience, beating out all radio TV and digital platforms. This type of advantage is even more crucial for local businesses and provides everything needed for targeted advertising - marketing columns and advertising through to classifieds, design, editorials and news stories. News coverage at the Waimea Weekly is focussed on local and social issues, community happenings and events, and items of general interest. It appeals to readers who want to keep informed about what’s happening in their region, while also being challenged, amused and entertained by what they read. “Every story in the paper is local,” Steve says, “We are entrenched here in our area, we’re an integral part of this community. Our people know what matters, we are all locals and know what interests and benefits our readers.”

of keeping Tasman informed about the issues that matter.

Brightwater School Pet Day Jenny Nicholson

It was a beautiful sunny day for Brightwater School’s annual pet day last Friday. The students were joined by parents, grandparents, siblings, and the children from Pinegrove Kindergarten. Teacher Joan Duncan said that it was great to get the community involved and

they had someone from TDC there to microchip and register dogs. She was planning to take the opportunity to registering her puppy. Police dog handlers put their dogs through a series of exercises including showing how the dogs can stop a thief. The children then had turns sitting in the police cars and patting the police dogs.

There was a shearing display from Alan Dobson. Pet groomer Lauryce Colvill was there with her dog Piper, doing a demonstration of pet grooming. Along with the pet show, the children could decorate cakes and make sand posies. Amelia Haley, who made a mermaid cake and two sand posies, said it took ages for

her to make her posies. Her four-year-old sister Erin said she was going to bring her dog to pet day next year. “We don’t have a dog, but Erin is working on us,” Erin’s mother Becky said. While most of the pets were dogs, there was a variety of animals from Meg Inwood’s 28-year-old horse to Stella Brown’s baby guinea pig.

A personal history of rugby and war Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

At 95-years-of age Clarrie Maskill has wonderful tales of meeting princes, playing international rugby and being part of an impressive New Zealand artillery division. Clarrie began his story with eyes full of humour as he told of starting his life in a tent in 1926. The tent was his family home in Cromwell, Otago, where he says they didn’t have two bob to rub together. The family moved around as Clarrie’s dad took on new roles, finally ending up in Wellington where Clarrie got into wrestling, boxing, lifesaving, and rugby. Clarrie started a cabinetry course at technical college when he was 13 years old, but seeing his brother becoming a pilot in WWII Clarrie came home with navy papers for his dad to sign. “I’m not sure where I got that idea from,” says Clarrie, Clarrie’s dad told him that as Clarrie had already brought papers home to be signed to be a cabinet maker, Clarrie could finish that first then he’d sign the new papers. After finishing his apprentice-

It’s fantastic the Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show 2020 is going ahead this weekend in its usual beachside location by gorgeous Tahuna Beach. “Although we won’t have $300,000 dollar vehicles coming down from Auckland like we did last year, it will still be a great day out for motorhome enthusiasts,” says organiser Jan Heslop. Held annually at the region’s iconic Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, the event showcases New Zealand’s leading motorhome, campervan and caravan suppliers and designers, with new and used privately-owned motorhomes also available for sale and lease. “With so many Kiwis deciding to explore their own country, product has been in high demand, so some models are in short supply,” says Jan. “So, come along and see what’s available.” This year, the motorhome show

will be held on the last weekend of November. The event usually attracts around 2000 people from all over the South Island, with similar numbers expected this year. “We will be promoting safe practises as usual, asking people to register, scan QR codes, etc.”

Returning and new exhibitors Jan says the relaxed nature of the show and the overall success of the event has seen it grow exponentially. “It’s the partnership with Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park, working in with Nelson Rotary and Heslops, the superb location – it’s the whole package. We have a lot of exhibitors who are returning for the 2020 event and we welcome some new exhibitors too, including Diesel

nights for no extra cost.” There’s some wonderful prizes on offer this year including the Heslops Rotary Raffle Prizes for 2020. Ist prize is a 2/4/6 berth Maui Van 5-day hire, sponsored by the RV Super Centre. 2nd prize is a $1000 travel voucher sponsored by MTF Finance and 3rd prize is a $500 Gift Basket sponsored by Moutere Caravans.

We are also grateful to our sponsors – RV Super Centre, Heslops, MTF Finance, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, Magic 99.2 FM, Burnsco, Maui NZ, Moutere Caravans and Rotary Club of NZ.” Jan says they are especially

grateful to Peter Fraser and his team at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. “They always look after us. We get the opportunity to stay there for three nights and exhibitors can stay overnight for three

“All proceeds from this year’s show is going to mental health for young mothers with babies,” says Jan, who has been organising the event for the past 8 years and is still very passionate about it. Behind the scenes, Jan’s Rotary team of Barry and Hec, amongst others, have been busy doing a lot of the correspondence and invoicing for the exhibitors.

The Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show taking place at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park is great for people who are considering buying a motorhome or caravan or upgrading their existing one. “I’ve been learning a bit more about posting stuff on Facebook and things like that too,” says Hec. “I’ve been involved in Rotary for 40 years and one of the things I’ve learned is that you get nothing out of something if you don’t put the time in. Jan said they needed someone to take on the role, so I said ‘yes.’”

Come down this weekend If you are looking at buying or selling a motorhome, campervan or caravan, want to improve your current motorhome or just want to see what life could be like if you owned a motorhome, then head down to the Rotary Nelson Motorhome Show which takes place on Saturday, November 28th and Sunday, November 29th, 2020 from 10am to 4pm at the Tahuna Beach Kiwi Holiday Park, at 70 Beach Road, Nelson. Public Gate Entry: $8.00 per person, under 15 free. Parking: entry is off Parker’s Road and at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. NBS NELSON CITY BRASS PRESENTS

DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS WITH NBS NELSON CITY BRASS

5 7PM DEC

Rev. Don Moses Yes, Christmas 2020 is almost here! What can Christmas offer us this year? Especially given the worlds Covid health and financial crisis. What is truly valuable today? Two women were walking through the woods when a frog called out to them and said: “Help me, ladies! I am a stockbroker who, through a witch’s curse, has been transformed into a frog. If one of you will kiss me, I’ll be returned to my former state!” One woman took out her purse, grabbed the frog, and stuffed him inside. The other woman, aghast, screamed, “Didn’t you hear him? If you kiss him, he’ll turn into a stockbroker!” The second

woman replied, “Sure, but these days a talking frog is worth more than a stockbroker!” I’m not sure what stockbroker, or a talking frog is really worth. But I do know that the greatest commodities in life are rarely enjoyed by many people. Why? Because too many of us are looking in all the wrong places. Expecting satisfaction from all the wrong things. We hear repeatedly that the world’s most unhappy people are frequently those with the most money & fame. Yet most of us strive to emulate

their achievements, desiring & accumulating more possessions, seeking our moment of ‘fame’. Then wonder why we are dissatisfied with our lives as well. Maybe we are just valuing the wrong things? If we will allow it, Christmas reminds us that the greatest commodities in life aren’t extravagant presents, more possessions, exotic holidays, etc. These offer the illusion of contentment but in reality, contentment is never found by purchasing something we don’t presently have. The greatest commodities in life can’t be brought they can only be

given. These are the commodities of Christmas: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, and goodwill to all. These are the attributes that God commends to us in the bible and modelled for us in the life of Jesus. When we pursue these with the same passion that we pursue financial success then our nation; our families; our lives will be places of contentment. Also, we aren’t very good at developing these attributes by ourselves, we need God’s help. So why not ask him? Try talking to God this Christmas season. You might get a nice surprise! May your Christmas be one of joy and peace!

Waimea’s Corey Hogg and fellow Nelson referee Taylor Lynch have been named in the group of officials selected for the Basketball New Zealand 2021 National Leagues Referee Panel. The referees are those who the committee have judged to be the best available to referee in the Sal’s NBL men’s and women’s competitions, based on their performance in the leagues and national tournaments in the preceding year. Hogg made his NBL officiating debut earlier this year in Auckland. The panel is split into four levels based on performance and experience, with referees for the men’s games to be appointed from levels 1-3 and referees for the women’s league and DLeague to be appointed from levels 1-4. Notable changes from last year’s collective is Wellingtonbased referee Callum Welch’s promotion to the second-tier, while Aimee-Jo Clark (Wellington) and Taylor Lynch (Nelson) have been added to the crop in level four. National Referee Instructor and chair of the NRADC, Peter Rodgers, says he is pleased with the progression of the officials and the like. “It is really pleasing to see ref-

Maia Jones makes national development camp www.shuttersport.co.nz

Jacob Page Waimea’s Maia Jones has been selected for the upcoming Basketball New Zealand development camps. The camps will host rising basketballers in the under-15 and under-19 age groups, at Saint Kentigern College in Auckland. The U19’s camp will be held 11- 13 December; the U15’s camp is on 14 – 16 December. High Performance Manager Leonard King says this camp is very much focused on development, as opposed to selection based on age-group tournament teams. “The development camps are an opportunity for young players who show potential to grow into a great player. They might have the size, shape, and some ability, and might not be a top player in their age-group just yet, but the potential is there. That’s why these are called ‘development’ camps. “The Aon National Championships, for example, are an opportunity for New Zealand’s regional representative teams to compete against the best

Yet our national coaches and selectors are aware that these events are just one part of the identification and selection criteria, and not a key focus for an athlete’s selection for Na-

tional team representation. “Ultimately, Basketball New Zealand’s High Performance programme has an international focus and the athletes identified by our national selectors are ones who we feel have the attributes to become Tall Blacks, Tall Ferns or 3×3 Senior National team players,” says King.

Jo Edwards calls time on epic career Jo Edwards was sitting in Auckland traffic last week when she made the biggest decision of her 20-year international career. “I was sitting at the traffic lights and I thought ‘I’m done’,” says Edwards. “I almost said it out loud. That was the moment when I knew, yup, it’s time.” Edwards had been pondering retirement for the last six months (“not that seriously though”) but those thoughts began to solidify in early November. A series of “tough” conversations with her husband Dave made her realise it was time to draw the curtain. “People have always told me ‘you know when you know’ and that is definitely true,” says Edwards. “It’s always going to be hard and there is a definite sadness, but I also feel happy. It’s been 23 years – nearly half my life and this is perfect timing.” The 50-year-old admits the unexpected Covid-19 chaos – which took her away from the greens for nearly eight months – helped to crystallise her thinking. “The [2020] World Champion-

ships event was always an aim,” says Edwards. “But it didn’t go ahead this year and who knows about 2021. But I also wanted to give Bowls New Zealand time to put together new teams and I knew if I wasn’t fully committed then it wasn’t going to work.” The news will be received with sadness across the bowls community and wider New Zealand sport. Edwards is regarded as the greatest bowler this country has produced and has been a giant of the sport. But it’s also a time to celebrate a remarkable career, encompassing a record 646 caps for the Blackjacks and a staggering array of medals and trophies, including five World Championship medals (two gold), three Commonwealth Games triumphs and an unprecedented six World Cup singles crowns. Edwards struggles to pinpoint favourite memories – “that’s tough, after 20 years in the full New Zealand team” – but is particularly proud of winning world titles on all surfaces (northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere and indoor), which requires remark-

Edwards made her national debut at the Asia Pacific Championships in 2001, with her first match stretching across 18 hours. “I’ll never forget it – it just kept raining,” says Edwards. “We had to go back and finish the game the next day. I was nervous anyway; it’s your first international tournament and you think this could be your one and only chance.” At the following year’s Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Edwards was named to skip Sharon Sims in the pairs. “A lot of people thought the selectors had got it round the wrong way,” says Edwards. “I’ll always remember walking past the media area and hearing a commentator discussing it. He said it was such a bad decision, putting a brand-new player in like that. But it worked out okay.” Edwards and Sims claimed a memorable gold. Edwards is famously modest, and you won’t find her medals and trophies on display in her lounge room. “No – definitely not,” says Edwards. “Our home is our home… it is not a shrine. “That’s not my

She also looks back fondly on the 2008 World Championship pairs title in Christchurch alongside Val Smith. “We are best mates; we have known each other since school so that was pretty special.” Her toughest tournament was the last world championships in 2016. “My mother had passed away a few weeks earlier so it was really hard,” says Edwards, who still picked up silver in the pairs and a singles bronze.

style.” That may be so, but Edwards has become, in her own way, a national treasure. Her deeds have often resonated with the public, especially in Nelson, where she has become a local hero, albeit a reluctant one. “My husband used to point it out - I was a bit oblivious to it,” said Edwards. In the wake of a Commonwealth Games triumph, a teller at her local BNZ bank had an unusual inquiry. “She asked me ‘I don’t suppose you are wearing your gold medal,” laughed Edwards. “I looked down inside my sweater and said, ‘oh bugger, I took it off when I had a shower this morning’.” Edwards isn’t completely sure what the future holds. “I imagine I will keep playing,” says Edwards. “But I am not going to be training three or four time a week. And my husband always said we could get a dog when I stopped playing…so I might get a puppy!” Edwards will be forever grateful to all those who have been part of her life-changing journey.

Erin Bradnock Nelson cycling enthusiast Bev Greig had to scout fellow bikies from a picnic table when she wanted to find people to cycle with 12 years ago. Now the Women on Wheels cycling group has grown to 14 members with nearly all members in their 70s. Bev says she wanted to start a cycling group after returning from touring Europe to get other woman like her exercising and socialising. “I didn’t know any of these ladies before. People have joined just by word of mouth,” says Bev.

On top of the weekly meet-ups, the women have also organised other adventurous trips together including the West Coast Wilderness trail and Alps to Ocean trail down south. The ladies agree it’s each other, the chance to meet up with the group of people, that keeps them coming each week. “We’re a real mix of people you normally wouldn’t meet, we’re all just awesome women,” says Marilyn.

Salisbury / Champion Road Roundabout Work starts this month and continues after the New Year break to make changes to the roundabout on the intersection of Champion and Salisbury Roads. We’re putting extra lanes on the roundabout to cater for increased traffic as our region grows. We’re making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians (especially the many school children in the area) by adding raised crossings. We’ll be making some changes to water supply and storm water at the same time. The first part of the project is underway and as it focusses on changes to services alongside the road, there’s little effect on traffic.

Keep up to date with this project and any traffic changes on our website, tasman.govt.nz/projects. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding as we carry out this major project.

Temporary chlorination of Richmond water

NEWSLINE UPDATES

From January, you will always be able to go straight through the roundabout between Stoke and Richmond but you won’t be able to turn right from any entrance. The work will happen in four stages and the lanes will be clearly marked out so you know where you can go. Access to all the businesses and the Aquatic Centre in Champion Road will be maintained via a slip road off the state highway. They will all remain open for business so please show your support.

As part of the Salisbury / Champion Road roundabout upgrade, work is happening on the water mains and other services. As the water network is at a higher risk of contamination when we work on the mains, the Richmond water supply will be temporarily treated with chlorine to be sure it stays safe to drink. Please be aware that this is usual practice when we do major work on the water supply and does not in any way pre-empt or affect the decision the Council is still to make on the proposal to permanently chlorinate the supply. You can read more about water chlorination on our website, tasman.govt.nz/chlorination.

The Queen Street bus stops will be closed this Sunday 29 November due to a road closure in place for the Richmond Santa Parade. A temporary bus stop will be set up on Talbot Street (opposite PAK’nSAVE). Alternatively, catch the bus at the Salisbury Road bus stop between Talbot and Florence streets.

Proposals to classify reserves in Moutere-Waimea Ward We're proposing to classify reserves located within the Moutere-Waimea Ward (207 separate parcels of land in total), to give them a specified purpose. Submissions close on 15 March 2021. Find out more at tasman.govt.nz/feedback

Summer is nearly here – the perfect time to sort your firewood! Now is the time to start collecting or purchasing your firewood so you can dry it in time to use in your wood burner next winter. Green wood will not burn efficiently, leaving you with a cold house and a smoky fire which contributes to air pollution. How you store your firewood is important. There are a range of storage solutions including woodsheds, wood stacks, under house eaves or in your garage. However you choose to store your firewood, make sure that: • Wood is off the ground to avoid moisture seeping up from below. • Air flow can reach the sides of the pile. • The top of the pile is covered to keep rain off. Where to find Good Wood
