An end to village fiasco?
Owners of Waimea Village, Michael and Carolyn Wright, have agreed to sell the village to the residents. The deal was stitched together by Tasman mayoral candidate and current councillor Kit Maling and if completed will end almost three years of bitter dispute between the residents and owners of the village, in Richmond. Details of the deal remain confidential but residents were briefed on the options on Sunday afternoon. Some residents were disappointed the Wrights would profit from their erratic behaviour over the past few years but most were in agreement that it was the only logical outcome and that now both sides can move on. The agreement was signed on Friday and Kit addressed residents of the village on Sunday afternoon with the proposal. It

will mean each home owner in the village has the opportunity to buy a 172nd share of the village, one share for each home and at a cost of $8200. Those who can’t afford to buy a share, or those who don’t want to can still lease their land as they do now but their monthly levies will be higher. A board will run the village and it will employ a part time manager to do all the things Michael Wright paid himself $100,000 a year for. Kit says the savings by getting rid of the Wrights would be huge and it would allow the residents of the village to get back to enjoying their retirement and living in peace again. “This is all SEE PAGE 2

about making this a better place for you to live and putting the past two and a half years behind you,” he told residents. Seventy per cent of the residents need to agree to buy a share for the deal to go ahead, something he is sure will happen. “I’ve door knocked on all the homes in the village three times now so I have a fairly good idea about what they’ll say and I’m confident we’ll get the necessary money.” If the deal falls over Kit will lose $7000 of his own money that he has put up as a nonrefundable deposit. He says house prices are likely to jump after the Wrights are gone. Kit has been just one of the community leaders attempting to help the residents of the village since the dispute with the Wrights started in late 2010. Others that
helped put pressure on the Wrights include councillor Judene Edgar, her husband and accountant David Verhargen, lawyer Warwick Heal, Pam Coltman, the residents committee and its chair Jerry Rowland, Weekly publishers Steve and Jenny Page, whose mother lives in the village, and other businesspeople. It was the efforts of these people that laid the foundations for this week’s news. Kit told the Weekly he was thrilled to have agreed to a deal. “I’ve been trying to do this for a long time and it was the only way it was ever going to end. I won’t say how much it’s for but whatever it is, it’s worth it.” Waimea Village residents committee chair Jerry Rowland says he’s happy that there appears to be a conclusion to the matter. “It will be fantastic when the people of the village will be able to control their own destiny and run the
village for all the villagers.” One of the conditions of sale is that court proceedings against the Wrights to protect money that should be in the repair and replacement fund is dropped. Although that will only be done after due diligence is completed. The sale becomes unconditional in 42 days, at the time of signing. The dispute between the Wrights and the residents of Waimea Village has been over annual levy increases and a concern that almost $400,000 in a repair and replacement fund isn’t in the fund. The issues have seen residents protest on Gladstone Rd, two rounds of arbitration, an on-going court case and plenty of acrimony on both sides. Residents spoken to at the meeting on Sunday say they can’t wait for it all to be behind them and to say goodbye to the Wrights.

It generally snows a good eight times a year at St Arnaud, but this year it was nothing like that at all. A warmer than usual winter meant for the first time in a number of years there was no significant snow fall at ground levels. Management at Rainbow Ski Area pulled the pin on the season three weeks earlier than expected after last week’s rain washed out the remaining man-made snow. Daniel Corbett, a spokesperson for Metservice, described our winter as a “winter of two halves”, but acknowledged that across the country it was the warmest winter on record. “It is not completely uncommon

[to get no snow in St Arnaud] but the type of winter and mix of weather systems have played a big part in how often snow falls over a winter,” he says. Lake Rotoiti School’s acting principal Nicky Crawford couldn’t remember a year when it didn’t snow in St Arnaud, but says from a logistical point of view, the lack of snow was actually a good thing. “Snow causes us all sorts of problems, especially with getting children to and from school,” she says. Last year the school had to be closed for two days due to
Frozen
snow, and Nicky says snow fall can create power cuts and makes it difficult for the school bus to get in and out of the town. “A lot the children travel to school on the bus, which isn’t a 4WD. So we have to be aware if it’s coming.” Hamish Neill of Rainbow Ski Area says the lack of sufficient snow was evident up the mountain too. “It has been unseasonably warm. August has been really warm and July/August was when we generally get the most of our business and the most of our snow, but that’s where it fell short.” Rainbow Ski Area was now closed until next winter.

School office lady says goodbye after 30 years If you’ve ever called Brightwater School at some point over the past 30 years, it’s very likely that you would have spoken to Helen Stewart. Having been the office lady throughout that time, Helen has decided to step down at the end of term, retiring to spend more time with her family. She says the school has been a big part of her life. “But you’ve got to move on sometimes, that’s what happens in life,” she says. Helen’s children were students at Bright-

They’re now in their 30s and with children of their own. “Once my children reached school I had to start earning money, like all people. I was a teacher aide at the start. brary. But it grew as the school grew.” With a young family, Helen enjoyed the lifestyle of working in a school, able to take time off during the school holidays. “I just loved it. I loved being here. It was different everyday and the kids kept you young.” As the school grew (it has increased by six classrooms), so did Helen’s working hours and her role in recent years has been fulltime administration. When asked what she will miss the most about the school, Helen answers “being
part of the Brightwater community”. “You know everyone. The pupils are now the parents. Brightwater is growing and I’ll miss the company of the staff too.” Seeing the former pupils now in their 20s and 30s with children reminds Helen “how long I’ve been here,” she laughs, and she remembers most of them too. “That’s the nice thing about it. You see them grow up and now they’re chief executives, excelling in sport, art and music. They were children and now they’ve developed and take on fantastic roles.”

Property insights The importance of quality photography Many people will view your property on line and make an instant decision about the value of the property to them, based on the presentation of the photos. You may never know why your property has received so many web viewings that go no further. There will be some viewers who are “just looking’, but there will be others who have interest in buying property like yours but are not impressed enough with the photos to warrant contacting your agent.

Why’d the cow cross the road?
IHC DINNER: IHC is hosting a three course dinner next month, with a special guest speaker set to take to the stage in support of the cause. The dinner is being held on October 11 at the Nelson Suburban Club. Tickets to the event can be purchased from Smiths City Nelson, the Nelson Suburban Club and the Richmond Mall. SUPER SWEET 16: Nelson’s most extravagant sweet 16 birthday party went off “without a hitch” says those organising it. The bands were flown in from Auckland, the guest list topped 190, food and wine came from Nelson’s top restaurant and a giant cake topped it all off. The final cost wasn’t revealed but was “a big budget”, according to the organiser who works for the family hosting the party. The teen at the centre of the party is a student at a local high school and was said to have had an “amazing” night. Music was provided by Soundstage, Jamie McDell, boy band Titanium and Mixit DJ.

Taylor’s Contracting is currently building a cattle underpass for a Spring Grove dairy farmer. While anyone driving from Brightwater to Wakefield would have noticed the diggers, cranes, and plenty of road cones along the State Highway, on the other side of the road is a visible new underpass which will allow the owner of Homedale’s cattle to cross under the road safely. The current work being undertaken was excavating a “race” away from the underpass.

Police plead: ‘lock your car’ Police are still fielding multiple reports each week about thefts from cars as it appears the public still aren’t getting the message that by simply locking their car it can go a long way to keep it safe. Acting sergeant Nick Kempthorne says police had received a number of reports of wallets and other valuables being taken from unlocked cars. The thefts are district-wide and predominately occur in residential areas with cars sitting under carports, on streets or up driveways, although they do happen in public car parks too. “It’s a perennial problem. People are making it easy for dishonest types to take their stuff by not making it secure and by leaving it in temptation’s way,” says Nick. “In most of those cases people had left valuables in full view inside the car. The offenders targeted those vehicles because they knew there was something worth taking.” While the response from police might appear passive, urging the public to lock their car doors or keep valuables out of sight is continually being stressed. It was only
in February of this year that police sent out a press release saying the number of car thefts had doubled since that time in 2012. The acting area commander at the time Ross Lienart said it was a problem Nelson had been dealing with for a number of years. “For whatever reason Nelson people seem to think it is safe to leave valuable items in unlocked vehicles, or within sight from outside vehicles. This is unfortunately not the case,” he said. This week police spokesperson Lisa Colville says the frequency of thefts come in “pockets”. “We might get hit really bad one week or one weekend and it’s because vehicles are constantly unlocked,” she says. Lisa says the type of items being taken is mixed. “Obviously they’re looking for the opportunity to take cash, wallets or small electronic items but sometimes its fuel or whatever else people leave in their car.” Nick says people should avoid leaving valuables in cars, but if it was unavoidable then they should be locked in the boot out of view.

Free Wi-Fi reaches mall Richmond Mall is now covered with free wireless internet. Set up by Richmond Unlimited, free wireless internet went live in the CBD and can be accessed from along Queen St and in Sundial Square. However, one of the key areas that had not been secured was the Richmond Mall. Until now. Although some independent busi-
nesses had their own free Wi-Fi, Justin Wells of thepacific.net, the company operating the connection, says it went live on Thursday and covers most corners of the mall, other than Pak n Save. On average 120 devices were connecting to the free Wi-Fi each day and that is likely to pick up considerably during summer.

Gala goes on despite rain
The community rallied behind the Hope School fair on Saturday, turning up in the hundreds and spending thousands of dollars, despite pouring rain dampening the day. School principal David Pritchard says the logistics of postponing the event would have been too difficult once Friday night had rolled along, and while earnings were down from last year, he was grateful to those that donned the raincoats and umbrellas to support the school. “It was wet but we just kept on going,” he says. David described the community support as
“stunning”. “It was just amazing. For example one lady bought five dollars worth of plants but spent ten and says ‘keep the change, you deserve it on a day like today.’” It was unknown exactly how many event goers there were on Saturday morning, but the amount of money raised appears to be north of $23,000. “That’s down [on last year.] There wasn’t anywhere near as much people. But when you’ve got fresh food and stuff like that, cancelling is always a challenge. Once Friday came we were too far gone.”

Cook book winners The category winners for the Richmond Mall cook book have been announced, with five locals being named as having the best recipes in the region. Centre manager Belinda de Clercq says it was a tough job just choosing one winner per category for the Christmas, jams and preserves, children’s, desserts and family meal sections but the people who won had “fabulous recipes and a fantastic story to go along with them”. As the publishing date for the cook book featuring local home recipes draws near, Belinda says she has been blown away by the quality and variety of the recipes that have been sub-
mitted to the competition. Overall category winner Elaine Flannery of Stoke took out first place due to the strong history her recipe had within her family. “It’s a traditional Christmas Plum Duff. It came from my mum’s mother, was handed down to my mum, then my mum passed it down to me and then me to my daughters. Now I’ve just got to get the ‘grandies and greats’ to make it to keep it going.” Elaine says her memories of the Plum Duff are that it never lasted long because her mother would put “three penny bits” into the bottom of it for the kids to find to ensure they “would eat the lot.”

I have been commenting for quite a few years that this would be a sad day when this had to start happening in New Zealand as common practice. I moved from the USA when I was 8 and have visited back several times, it's all prepay there. I interpret it as a sign of the times of economic inequality and decreasing community trust. What does it matter you have to go in and pay anyway. Leticia Robertson.
I don't see why there's any hoo-ha about it. You put petrol in, you pay for it - why does it matter to customers which way around that is when it's helping out the local business owner? As long as there's a way around the fill-up issue, no problem! Lisa Fowler.
What about when you want to fill up and dont know how much it will be? Claire Kelly. I shop at Z for Flybuys anyway but that policy would make me not shop with them. Wayne Nicholson. I don't understand how this works.. when I get petrol I usually just 'filler up', I don't know exactly how much it's going to cost..how do you pre-pay that? Thank you: I'd like to thank the lovely ladies walking their dogs and the Nelmac gardener who assisted me, my 8 week old and my four year old boy who fell in the Maitai river riding his bike along Avon Terrace today. Luckily the river was low and he was wearing his helmet which protected his head from the rocks in the river. Forever grateful to you. Joanne Moon. Lee Valley Dam: It should have been done years ago. Simon Scowen. I’m sure it will eventually go ahead but rather than just waiting for it to happen, which may still be years away, the community needs to be proactive now about water storage. How many summers like the last can growers cope with if cuts
are made...? Pity TDC cut back on enviro education, people living in the urban areas are most likely to take a laissez-faire attitude to water savings as it rarely effects them other than washing cars or watering gardens when restrictions are in place. Should I be elected I will ensure education is a priority because this is the only real way to effect change. Sue Wilson.

Marriage knowledge quizzed in public
Cool, it’s Pete Madsen this Saturday
Think you know you partner? Enough to be publicly quizzed about them and get the answers right? Well some well known local couples do and they are willing to battle it out amongst themselves in the name of fundraising. Mayor Richard Kempthorne and his wife Jane, Richmond Mall manager Belinda De Clercq and her husband Dion and former Tall Black Ed Book and his wife Lisa, along with several couples will jump on stage and take part in Grace Church’s ‘Marriage Match’. The idea is to get each couple to answer a series of questions individually, and then quiz their other half to see which couple is the best match says organiser Sandra Johnson. “We wanted an event that would break the mould and be a bit of a laugh. It’s going to be a very entertaining evening testing the couples on how well they know each other. I don’t think they know quite what they’ve got themselves in for.” Belinda says she and he husband Dion who have been mar-

We’ve been studying all week.” Richard however admitted that although he and wife Jane have been married for 34 years, he’s “terrified” and doesn’t know what to expect. “It will be fun. I’ve talked about it with her and asked what her favourite
colour is. I’ve forgotten it already.” Sandra says the emphasis is on the fun factor and encourages the community to get behind the event, with proceeds going towards sending the church’s youth group to the Philippines to see visit their sponsor child. Candidates pitch their case to you
By now you should have received your voting papers in the post. Along with voting for mayor and board members of the district health board, you will vote for those to represent you on council. In the Waimea-Moutere ward there were only three candidates, so you won’t
Judene Edgar I am a dedicated councillor who understands the council processes so can effect change; a strategic thinker who strives for pragmatic outcomes; and am passionate about Tasman’s future. Weekly says: Top councillor, a tireless worker, we need her back.
Gordon Currie
I have spent the best part of a quarter of a century involved in the care and concerns of the 50+ citizens of the region, also those on low and fixed incomes who find rate payments very difficult. Weekly says: Coming back for another crack, was a tidy enough councillor last time.
Mark Greening I will bring the skills of a tax lawyer and adjudicator. I also have over 18 years of business experience. I am passionate, positive, honest, fair, a hard and tireless worker and someone you can trust. Weekly says: Currently works in Wellington, says he would commit to council if elected.
Alan Turley
My experience in local government and the ability to make sensible and cost effective decisions make me well qualified. We need the FOUR best candidates elected. Weekly says: Former NCC councillor, lives in Brightwater.
WW.
your vote. Waimea Weekly believes we need strong, dedicated candidates that can lead this district into the next few years. We are at a critical point for the region and it’s vital we continue our growth and have the right people to help steer that.
Janine Pugh
Zane Mirfin
I care about Richmond and its community. I have a portfolio of employment, and life experience [behind me]. Weekly says: New candidate, pretty much an unknown on the council scene. Says her family is her first priority. Lives in Hope with her family.
I’m intelligent, sensible, fair, objective, approachable, and a good listener. I’ve worked hard over the past three years and the ratepayers of Richmond have trained me well. I am ready for a 2nd term. Weekly says: We haven’t heard much from Zane over the past three years. One of two incumbant councillors in the race.
John Cumpstone
Michael Higgins
I would never claim to be the best, but I can assure you that I would represent and serve all constituents. I am an active listener and will bring empathy and compassion to the job. Weekly says: New candidate, works as a rural postie and is a volunteer fireman.
I am able to grasp the heart of each matter that comes before the council, and take it to a good outcome. Weekly says: An effective former councillor. Now says he supports free car parking in Richmond. Lives in Wakefield and is backing Richard Kempthorne for mayor.

Nelson’s kids on the Block After a week on the Block NZ television show, Nelson’s Tom and Loz Heaphy were wondering what on earth they’d gotten into. They were the underdogs with no renovation skills, they couldn’t even build a decent letterbox and realisation that they could be in for ten weeks of losing was hitting them hard. “We said to the producers, ‘did you just put us on this show to be the losers?’” says Loz. “We thought ‘what are we doing here?’” But it didn’t take them long to turn it around, heading into this week they were on a streak of three wins, including their children’s bedroom, the dinner wars challenge and their bathroom. Suddenly it all seemed to come together, says Tom. “We don’t like losing and I pictured ten weeks of us losing the whole time and being a joke and being an embarrassment and that was really tough to get our heads around. Winning the bathroom was huge,

Winning the Block NZ could be a life changer but they say just finishing the challenge will be ultimate experience. “We never said we were in it for the money but that it was a nice benefit of it and that. But going through it, the way we’ve grown, the skills we’ve learnt, that’s more valuable,” says Tom. “We’ve learnt so much and it’s something we’ll always remember and hopefully something we’ll always look back on with pride and happiness… but winning money will add to that,” he jokes. Just a thought... Over the last few months I have found myself watching programmes like ‘The Block’ or ‘Extreme Makeover’ and I think it is because I enjoy watching people and houses being restored to their former glory. There are times that you watch someone with body and self-esteem issues go through the process that doctors, dieticians and fashion experts put them through, then at the end they appear with newfound confidence and style, so much so that it is hard to believe they are the same person. I was sorting some photos the other day, including some
old photos of myself and I thought that my before and after images were pretty staggering too and my kids didn’t even think they were the same guy! For a start I am tanned, blonde and if I do say so myself, buff. This got me thinking about what people see when they look at me. You see before I met Jesus I was buff, blonde and tanned but ugly to the bone. I made fun of any one who did not meet my standard of normal, if they walked differently or spoke differently, or if their weight was not my normal they were fair game. Over time as I began to know Jesus better I asked God for a change in my perspective. As I began to replace culture for eternal truth a strange

thing began to happen and I started to see beauty in the people that our culture labels as ugly, undesirable or rejects. As a result I am beginning to find opportunities to serve them rather than spending so much time on my own shortcomings. I have a long way to go, but I am wondering out loud what it would look like for me and you to take seriously God’s desire for us to love him, others and ourselves. It is however true that God has done an extreme makeover on my soul and the best news is he’s not finished yet. By the way I cannot wait for tomorrow cause in my opinion I get better looking every day! - Jeff Wright, Richmond Community Church.
Big turnout for pig hunt Huge crowds turned out for the Taylor’s Wanderers Pig Hunt Challenge on Saturday as local rugby clubs swapped their boots for their Ridgeline and battled it out off the field. The challenge is aimed at bringing together each rugby club for a final Saturday of friendly rivalry and it did just that, with Taylor’s Wanderers taking home the trophy and Murchison falling short in second place. Challenge co-organiser Frank Goeddert says he was really pleased with the turnout and says a highlight was watch Hunting Aoteroa’s Matua Parkinson giving out prizes to
the children who entered. Matua and his film crew followed the pig hunt from Thursday through to Saturday, heading out with local hunters to capture the culture here in Nelson. Local woman Janeen Wilson and hunting partner Jo Albers have been chasing boars together 25 years and says the Wanderers hunt was known as one of the best. The prize for the heaviest boar went to Dan Fisher for his 62kg entry and with the most uncanny luck, average weight went to Nyron Wills who also won it last year. Nyron donated $500 of his $1000 prize to Wanderers JAB.

Richmond Ward For Tasman District Council I am standing for another term as the TDC Councillor. My main concern is to keep the cost of rates affordable; this requires diligence and fiscal prudence. We are faced with upgrading infrastructure and replacing that what has reached the
end of its economic life. We must be aware of the future of our water supply and adopt the most cost effective method of maintaining an adequate supply to meet all requirements. To maintain a vibrant and

sustainable future for Richmond, and ensure all of the regions facilities are kept up to the best standards is a priority. In the Council Chamber I will continue to support any effort to keep rates to a minimum and bring to
the attention of the Mayor and other Councillor’s the hardships many have in paying higher council charges and rates. The success of the council is in discussions around the Council Table and by making sound, economic decisions.

GIRLS DAY OUT: Ranger Guides and Pippins held a “Big Sister, Litter Sister” day last weekend up Lee Valley at the Guides’ Paretai Lodge. The event is held all around New Zealand once every two years and is coordinated by the Rangers Guides who are the senior group in the region. The programme for the day was based around a teddy bears picnic and gave the Rangers Guides an opportunity to test their leadership skills while the Pippins, who are age five to six, were able to experience the fun activities organised.

The spring summer range is being unpacked in store so you’ll need to get in quick to get the best of the selection. From basics, casuals, business or play, you will only need to shop at one place this summer. Made for Men is the only dedicated men’s fashion store in Richmond and Warren has carefully chosen the best styles for the season ahead. From short sleeve, cotton casual shirts, bright colours in short and long sleeves, paisley prints, stripes, checks and more the selection is a mixed bag with something to suit each individual. New suits, a range of all leather belts, contemporary and classic ties are also in store and a brand new underwear range is on the offering. Check out Daxters – available in a boxer or brief in black or steel grey. Gone are the days when fashion was limited to what was on trend. Warren says the variety he consistently stocks in store is one of the reasons his customers leave so well dressed.
“It used to be that if stripes were in, everywhere you went that is all you would see. We stock a huge variety so that if stripes are in that’s great, but you’ll find a range of different colours and designs to suit your individual style too.” As well as the new clothing range, Warren also has a great collection of formal wear and suit hire. Suit hire is a great choice for those special occasions such as school balls, weddings or any black tie dress code and Made for Men has a suit to fit all shapes and sizes. If you are purchasing and need a few adjustments, ask him about your tailoring options. Need your clothing dry-cleaned? Remember that Made for Men are the agent for Master Valet Drycleaners and Laundry. Cellar Door TC D The Restaurant & Cafe @ Waimea Estates 59 Appleby Highway For fresh, seasonal flavour knock on the Cellar Door, the brand new café and restaurant now open at Waimea Estate. Just in time for the first grapes of the season, Katrina and Neil Ward’s dream has come to fruition and their café amid the vineyard is now open for business. Not only have they started the menu from scratch, they’ve completely revamped the style of the café. A complete makeover means the café, whilst in the same premises is almost unrecognisable from what it was. A conservatory now opens out into the vines, wood and stone blend throughout the interior and a feature wall photograph by Andre Ismael of the sprawling Waimea Estate takes pride of place. Katrina and Neil, both passionate chefs with a wealth of experience have come back to Nelson after a stint in Wanaka. It dawned on them that there was no better place to open their own café or restaurant than Nelson, where their philosophy of fresh, simple flavours using local ingredients could flourish. Just four months ago the duo took over the cafe and restaurant and after some hard work, creativity and the help of Waimea Estate owners, the Bolitho family, the result is a stylish, relaxed dining space with a menu that speaks for itself. Katrina and Neil have had a lot of fun coming up with the menu. Their shared love of fresh ingredients along with the fusion of their café and fine dining ex-

A reputation for great homemade food and great service has been a constant at the Boulevard but there have been a few changes over the years too. While the busy foot traffic of the mall passes by, the café has kept its sheltered dining space to allow a bit of privacy and time out from the world. We also serve as a channel of communication with TDC and other bodies that affect our community. Last month we had a visit from Hugh Briggs of the Tasman Cycle Trail Trust who are looking to enhance the track through Brightwater with new signage and asked where we want signs located. We are seeking donations from the community to purchase a portable
speaker system that can be used by community organisations in Brightwater such as schools, sporting, youth, senior and cultural organisations. Last Anzac Day here in Brightwater we hired a similar sound system for our Anzac service and it was most useful and really enhanced the service, allowing us to play the appropriate music and the speakers to be heard clearly. Soon we will all receive voting papers for our local elections. The candidates offer different choices so please use your vote wisely. A special electricity meter on your switchboard called an import export meter enables you to sell any excess power back to your power company. • Cut your electricity bills: sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be dramatically reduced • Sell electricity back to the grid: if your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can’t use it, you can sell the surplus back to the grid. • Fix your power prices for the next 30 years. Regardless of what the power companies do in the future, with the correct sized system, you determine your power usage.

Is Wakefield Rest Home setting the standard for assisted living? Twenty years on and still going strong says they are. Join the wee gem of a rest home in celebrating their milestone anniversary this weekend and congratulate them on their achievement. The friendly team and fun loving residents are taking a walk down memory lane this Saturday and invite anyone who has made a connection with the rest home over the years to join in the party. Twenty years is a fantastic achievement for Wakefield Rest Home and they want to share the moment with one and all. While it is a small facility, good things come in little packages and the friend-
ships, relationships and great atmosphere within are all reasons it has stood the test of time. Beautiful surroundings, personalised care and a tight knit culture are just some of the great things about Wakefield Rest Home. Being privately owned, they’ve been able to stay on the smaller end of the scale and currently cater to just 22 residents, with two full time staff and 21 part-timers. The staff are all true professionals and offer care that is second to none. “That is what makes all of the difference,” says manager Geraldine Harvey. “The calibre of the staff here is fantastic. They are all very capable, competent and all go the extra mile. You can’t buy that for
love nor money.” The country setting makes a trip out to Wakefield Rest Home worth the journey. Along with a picturesque location the rest home shares a great community connection. Just a stone’s throw away you can enjoy a cup of tea at a café, sit with a sweet treat at the tearooms, call into the pharmacy, 4 Square, hair dresser , or post office, all within a strolls distance for capable residents. A medical clinic is located next door and Faulkner’s bush reserve provides a seat in the sun where residents can spend the day taking in the sights and sounds of nature or spending time with visiting family. A range of social activities are on hand

for the residents to take part in, with crafts, flower arranging, singing, entertainment, music and bowls, they are spoiled for choice. Wakefield Rest Home and local volunteers are also proud to deliver an affordable meals on wheels service for the wider community in Wakefield, supplying nutritious and delicious meals to those who still live independently, but need a helping hand with meals. Families are always pleasantly surprised at just how much their mum, grandmother, or grandfather love their new home. A lovely letter arrived just last year from a more than satisfied relation. Joy Potter of Queensland wrote to Geraldine saying just how grateful she was for the high level of care and companionship her mother found at Wakefield Rest Home. “Mum would brag to me chuckling about being waited on hand and foot, I have seen the constant fun and laughter that the staff engage in with the residents. “She would continually reassure me that this wee rest home was her new home and that she loved it. She enjoyed having like minded friends new and old, to share her golden years with.” The twenty year mark is a huge success for a Wakefield Rest Home and its longevity boils down to the staff who truly care about the people who live there. It’s obvious from the residents, their families and the fantastic feedback they receive that the staff are genuine in their care. Celebrate 20 great years with the small rest home with the biggest heart this weekend. Afternoon tea, music and fun will kick off at 2.30pm and wind
down at 4pm. Wakefield Rest Home also welcome new residents with open arms so to find out more information simply drop by or phone Geraldine on 541 8995

Delayed flight robs Titans of final shot The Tasman Titans have missed out on a spot in the South Island InterDistricts rugby league finals after their opposition didn’t show up and the competition’s governing body labelled the match a draw. The Southland Rams had their flight from Invercargill cancelled on Friday night, and the decision was agreed by both parties to accept a default. With Southland sitting second on six competition points, and Tasman third, needing a win and to make up a 36 point differential to sneak ahead, Titans coach Phil Bergman was under the assumption the default would leap frog his side ahead of the southerners if they were given a default 30-0 win. But instead, a 30-30 draw was decided, robbing his side of a chance to win back the title they won against Southland last year. “It’s bitterly disappointing,” Phil says. “The unfortunate thing about this whole fiasco is that a team can default and somehow reach the final ahead of us.” When questioned whether he was
Hoani Takao of the Tasman Titans during their first South Island Inter-Districts game. Photo: Phillip Rollo. annoyed at the situation, Phil’s frustrations were aimed at the rule book rather than the opposition. “It’s in the rules and they get interpreted by a board. In a case a few weeks earlier the West Coast defaulted to them [Southland] and they received the two points and a 30 point differential. Had that been applied in this case, which I can’t see a reason why it wasn’t, we would also have been awarded the
two points, the 30 point differential and we’d be in the final against Canterbury Development.” The ruling now sees Tasman end the competition in fourth place behind the Otago Whalers, a position Phil says doesn’t reflect the 2013 season. “We just needed that last game. We just wanted a go. It all feels very empty and I’m disappointed that we just didn’t get a crack.”

Max Clark for Mayor NO LEE VALLEY DAM
RATE PAYERS will subsidise water costs of dairy farmers, orchardists and others if the Lee Valley Dam is built. RATE PAYERS are deliberately being kept in the dark as to costs and funding by this council. RATE PAYERS are paying $1 in every $5 of their rates to service debt. This must stop. Only priority projects should be considered. RATE PAYERS need forthright leadership and business sense for the Council’s income of over $100 million per year. RATE PAYERS want a change in Council culture and overspending. The proposed Lee Valley Dam’s only capacity is to financially drain our district, with further increased debt likely to be $60 million and increased RATES TO ALL RATE PAYERS in the Tasman District.
NO LEE VALLEY DAM
The site of the proposed dam is in an area of high earthquake risk, close to the Flaxmore - Waimea - Heslington fault and the Alpine fault. The wellbeing and safety of the people of Brightwater should not be compromised by building a dam with holds 13 million cubic metres of water in a known earthquake prone area. RATE PAYERS don’t want toxic drinking water from more intensive farming and increased irrigation and leaching with nitrates, phosphates and faecal bacteria in the river.
THERE IS NO WATER SHORTAGE - IT’S ABOUT RIVER MANAGEMENT I PROPOSE a more user-friendly, cost effective and safer alternative: (a) A series of WEIRS on the river between Lee Valley and Appleby Bridge that would provide storage of water and provide a constant feed of water to recharge the aquifers, as was successfully done on the Wai-iti River by the Council and a popular water management method in Australia. Join me on (c) Household rainwater storage tanks and water re-use systems.
The people of Tasman must be listened to – I am prepared to listen

New grades highlight touch rugby season
Touch referee Wayne Bateman is gearing up for the summer touch rugby season which begins on October 23. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The Richmond touch module will include two new grades this year with a Men’s Over 35 and Business House Social Mixed added to the competition. Touch begins on Wednesday October 23 with four senior grades, Men’s Open, Men’s Over 35, Social Mixed Open and Business House Social Mixed, and a popular junior grade for school kids. Registration for the senior teams is still accepted and entries can be taken to the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms on Tuesday October 1 from 6-7pm. Teams must have at least six players but no more than 14.

The entry fee is $350 per team. Module coordinator Aleisha Hart says the reason behind the new competition was to add some variety to the senior grades, and she was hoping businesses would jump in behind the new mixed grade. “A lot of the older guys thought some of the college kids were running loops around them,” she says. “But it also separates the grades we’ve got and makes it more social for some. Hopefully we can get some more people who would be keen to have a work team entered.”
2013 ELECTIONS 20 September to 12 October I live in Wakefield but have lived in both rural and urban settings throughout my life. The Top of the South has been home for me for over 14 years and I love this region. I owned and managed Wakefield Pharmacy for 13 years and have a special fondness for the Wakefield and Brightwater communities along with all the rural communities to Murchison and beyond. I now have the time to give back to the community by standing for the DHB. I am passionate about healthcare and have broad experience as a health professional and in health governance. This includes the boards of Nelson Bays Primary Health and the Pharmacy Council of NZ, membership on the NMDHB Hospital Advisory Committee for nearly ten years and senior management positions at Middlemore Hospital where I also sat on the clinical board. We deserve to have our health care provided efficiently and effectively getting the best value from every health dollar. I want to help ensure community healthcare isn’t stifled by the DHB deficit so we can invest in local health initiatives to prevent illness and stay well. I have the time and passion to help get better value from our DHB. I bring a vast amount of experience from senior international roles in BP, TelstraClear and my own consultancy. I have managed budgets in excess of 250 million dollars and have formal internationally recognised qualifications in Management, Project Management and Governance. My family and I have lived in this region for 9 years. I’m a keen cyclist and past president of Tasman Wheelers cycling club. I believe that we need to encourage a fully integrated approach with all stakeholders to promote healthy lifestyle choices that will benefit us all long term. I stand for: • Promoting schemes that enable people to improve their own health and wellbeing • Making good quality, well considered decisions based on accurate information and unbiased advice • Ensuring the ‘health dollar’ is spent wisely and benefits all groups in the community • Ensuring Quality and Safety in the Health Care System • The workforce needs the best possible support to enable it to meet the demands of addressing the ever higher health standard expectations of our community Vote for me and I will bring a strong blend of community involvement, commercial and governance experience to contribute to the success of the NMDHB.

Brigid Forrest - Marlborough • 25 years of medical service to the “top of the South” - General Practice (GP) - Community Geriatrician working with the elderly • Experience in governance on school, community and advisory Boards • Running a successful local family business • Strong Community focus
trict Health Board
Brigid Forrest wants the best healthcare possible for you and your family. A vote for her will mean continued medical perspective on the NMDH and progress towards equitable health services for everyone in the top of the south. As a qualified medical practitioner who has spent 24 years working in Marlborough – initially as a GP where she specialised in obstetrics delivering several hundred local babies, in the last 12 years Brigid has worked as a GP locum and community geriatrician for the NMDHB. Brigid believes that Marlborough people have lost a lot of services over the last 10 years and access to services ‘over the hill’ for many of the population is difficult and expensive – as it is for similar populations in Golden Bay and Murchison. She believes there needs to be an equal distribution of health services and a more open discussion about where the health budget is best spent. With governance experience on school and community boards, being passionately involved in community projects such as Bike Walk Marlborough – integrating safe walking and cycling in both urban and rural areas within Marlborough - Brigid is well placed to advocate on the community’s behalf.

Nelson praised as football host
Nelson Bays Football has had a ringing endorsement after the Lotto Premier Girls New Zealand Secondary Schools Football Championship. Nelson hosted the tournament at Saxton Field earlier this month and it was done so well that executive committee member of New Zealand Secondary School Football Association, Grant Jarvis, felt compelled to say so. In a letter he praised the facilities at Saxton Field and the management and says he wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it come back to the top of the south. “In summary we congratulate you for a truly splendid week. Our commitment to return at least each third year, if invited, was firmly endorsed at the AGM. Nelson Bays Football is held in very high esteem by our member schools,” he wrote. Waimea College finished tenth at the event.
