Queen St retailers stay upbeat during upgrade Queen St retailers are experiencing a downturn in business as the street’s upgrade gets into full swing but many are remaining positive about the project with one business manager saying “these guys will soon move on and we’ll have a really nice little main street.” The Tasman District Council’s $11million upgrade started on February 7 and is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent the flooding that devastated Queen St businesses in 2011 and 2013. Ageing water and wastewater pipes and telecommunications and power services are also being replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. Three hundred and sixty-five riders completed 1190 laps, 10,115km and 184,000 metres of vertical climbing and had a blast doing it at the Port Nelson Kaiteriteri Six Hour Mountainbike Relay on Saturday.
The popular event attracted riders of all ages and abilities with super-fast solo rider Henry Jaine leading the charge, completing 14 laps in 5 hours 47 minutes and 30 seconds. But for most of the riders, the day was more about enjoyment than speed and Team USA certainly led the way when it came to having fun. It was impossible to miss Tommy
Winnington, Jude Saxon, Lloyd Elston and Cam Moore riding in their Stars and Stripes outfits chanting ‘USA, USA’. However, Tommy made clear that they were not fans of US president Donald Trump, announcing loudly through the team’s loud hailer that “we are not, in any way, affiliated to the United States.” One of the event organisers Craig
Skillicorn says they were delighted with the number and diversity of riders. Nelson’s Tom Dunn, 74, showed that age is no barrier to getting on your bike, riding four laps for his team MTM. Craig says the event also attracted plenty of families and school teams with riders as young as nine lining up with their mums and dads.
