Volunteer firefighters hit low The number of volunteer firefighters are in decline, and it’s up to the local community to get the numbers needed to turn up to callouts says assistant area manager for the Tasman Fire Service Tim Bennion. He says keeping the numbers up is a constant battle and puts the lack of available numbers down to a “transient population”

Largest family comp gets bigger

A local woman diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma is spreading the word about the lack of fertility treatment funding for cancer patients, and asking for a little bit of help in return. Rachel Burton, 20, was diagnosed with cancer at the end of April but says the biggest shock to her system was learning that the cure to her illness could also make her infertile. Rachel needs to undergo six months of chemotherapy in order to rid herself of the disease, but was told shortly after her diagnosis that the treatment could leave her unable to have children, something Rachel just couldn’t comprehend. “It was so shocking to be told I had lymphoma, but even then I didn’t realise getting better could make me infertile. I didn’t know

A search for Nelson’s largest family has attracted so much interest competition organiser Hakan Aslankilic of Cafe Olive has upped the prize pool. Having been inundated with entries, Hakan says he will offer a free lunch and a free breakfast to two of the other families. “It’s good to hear absolutely, that so many families have entered. We thought we’d offer the second family lunch and the third biggest family breakfast.” There are rules though, a family is defined as two parents and their children only and the majority of the children must be under 18. what to think, it was crazy.” Rachel was given a good prognosis from her doctor but her dreams of one day having children were dashed when she was told that although she could have some of her eggs stored for future use, fertility treatment was no longer funded for cancer patients. “The cost of the treatment is $10,000 and as of this year it isn’t funded. Embryo storage is funded, but I am 20 years old, I don’t have a partner that I can say to, ‘hey, wanna make some embryos?’” Rachel made the decision to take out a personal loan to pay for her own egg storage and ever since has been inundated with support from friends, family and locals from the community who want to help her pay it back. They have embarked on a mission to raise the $10,000 one way or another, and have organised a mass head shave at the Richmond Mall to do so.

Alongside mates who are making the trip up from Christchurch and family friends from Nelson, Rachel will have her own head shaved too in order to raise funds. She says she is using the event to “get it over with” as chemo will eventually make her hair fall out, and loves the fact that she has so much support. “It’s a real self esteem booster, it feels so cool to have everyone helping out. It’s amazing how many people are willing to help out when you need it. The event is also a good chance to just raise awareness of the fact that the fertility treatment isn’t funded. Not many people know that and it’s not exactly what you expect to have to deal with when you’ve got cancer.” To donate to Rachel’s fertility fund, you can deposit into the bank account, 060705-0441164-00 or head along to support the head shave this Saturday.

iPads and iPhones to save police time

Allowing police to use iPads and iPhones will increase efficiency by 30 minutes each day, according to a local sergeant. As part of a new device rollout, 6500 frontline officers were given an iPhone, with a further 3900 given an iPad to use on the job. The Nelson officers included in this rollout were given theirs this week and sergeant Blair Hall, who coordinated the project, believes it will help keep police in the community by reducing time in the office. By using iPads and iPhones, police will be able to access more information at their fingertips, view jobs and events, do personal checks without having to go through a communication centre, take photos at the scene and in time will be able to do most paperwork on the devices. “It makes it much easier and during the trial staff said it saved them half an hour a day or half an hour a shift just by having it with them.

Volunteer firefighters hit low FROM PAGE 1 The Murchison brigade services a huge area including the Hope Saddle, almost to Ingangahua, and just short of Lake Rotoiti, with the nearest brigade around 30 minutes either side. Paul says in most incidents, a fire is already at its peak by the time the brigade get there and doesn’t know what would happen if the wait was increased due to lack of volunteers. “Our main aim is to save lives, property, people’s livelihood. If we don’t get the numbers up, one of these days there won’t be anyone here to respond and I’d be absolutely gutted.” Paul isn’t battling with volunteer numbers alone, with Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade’s senior station officer Craig Piner saying he doesn’t think numbers have ever been this low. “It’s getting critical for us for sure, we really do need more people.” The Richmond brigade are currently operating on 22 volunteers, but need about 30 to feel comfortable. He says they need more numbers to have the coverage they need for the area, particularly during the day, bearing in mind that “not all 22 people are available 24/7, some work in town or do shift work”. The Richmond volunteer brigade covers the Richmond area and acts as a back up to Stoke, Wakefield and other areas

We’ve got heaps of people that actually would like to move on, but they can’t because they know the situation that would put the community in. “The lower the numbers the harder it is to get the truck out the door and that means the community is at higher risk. We won’t be able to help people as soon as we’d like to.”

Richmond church targeted Theft of security cameras from outside the Holy Trinity Church on Dorset St in Richmond is just the latest in a series of criminal events that has left it out of pocket says vicar Sue Gill. Police are seeking two people that they think may have information in relation to the theft which Sue describes as “perplexing”. She says since Easter, there has been damage to a car in the church carpark and a break in to the office where a locked drawer was smashed open. Sue believes most of the crime is occurring due to public accessway that comes across the church grounds and is appealing to the public to stop the vandalism and damage. “People don’t realise that if it does continue, we may need to look at closing the grounds off at night to stop people walking through, which would be inconvenient to everyone.”

No fix for fords There will be no fix for the fords on Golden Hills Rd that continue to claim cars as drivers pass through up to two metres of water, with a spokesperson for the Tasman District Council saying “there will not be any changes made to signage”. Neighbouring resident Frank Goeddert who continually rescues drivers in “desperate need” from the fords says although he is disappointed that the council will not be altering or adding signage to the road, people need to “wake up”

the alternative route” instead of risking it. “People should know that there is in fact an alternative route, down Challies Rd. Most people who live on this road choose to go the long way around because of the fords, so visitors to the area should too.” He also says that drivers should take note of the 30cm difference in height between the first and second ford. “If you’ve passed through the first ford easily, don’t expect that you’ll be able to do the same with the second.”

New ‘village’ meets some opposition More than 30 neighbouring residents to a proposed lifestyle village have major issue over its level of density says local man and lawyer Mark Greening. Following a community meeting where communications began between the developers of the village and those living in close proximity, Mark says a number of residents are now expressing their concerns more vigorously. Mark and Kristin Nimmo, of the Integrity Care Group, have plans currently going through the resource consent process at Tasman District Council to build a lifestyle village on Wensley Rd made up of 112 villas, 30 terrace houses and 26 apartments and a long term residential care facility with capacity for 100 beds and 58 serviced apartments. The model of high density housing has been identified as a need in Richmond but Mark, whose parent’s home backs onto the development site, says residents are now operating as a group to express their worry over the height of the development, closeness to the boundary and traffic that could be generated. He says the group isn’t objecting to a retirement village, but isn’t sure that is what is being proposed and that has brought on concern over traffic levels on an already busy street. “This is not strictly a retirement village although it has been bandied around as one. They are suggesting that people will be able to live here who are over 55. That will include retired people but it’s not exclusively retired people. So if you count up all the villas and the apartment blocks, you can make your own guess on how many vehicles will be going in and out at 9am in the morning.” He says there is also a concern that the Nimmo’s could bend the rules by proposing a 12 metre high building on land that is restricted to developments of 7.5 metres in height. “We would like the council to uphold the rules, rather than allow the developer to go beyond them.” Mark says if the developers made adjustments to plans in accordance with residents wishes, it

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz would have a cascading effect on the majority of their concerns. “I think residents would be happier if there were fewer villas on the overall development. This would provide more space on the boundaries and if the buildings weren’t so high then you’d reduce the volume of people in the complex and both noise and traffic.” He says any development in the style of Olive Estate should be subject to the high density discussion currently taking place between the public and the council. “This project should be subject to the high density discussion that the public had earlier. If this thing gets off the ground before that, it’s not fair on residents and this could set a precedent.” Sarah Etchells, who moved into the area three weeks ago says both she and her husband understood that the area would be developed at some stage and were fine with it but were concerned about how dense Olive Estate could be. “When we heard it was going to be a retirement village we thought well that’s probably OK, but when we had a look through the plans, the high density of it seems to be remarkable. The level of density struck me.” She says she doesn’t see how it would work in terms of access of traffic and storm water run off. “We want to find out are these plans realistic? Do they have a chance of being passed through council? Are they just flying a kite perhaps and seeing what they get away with? Mark and Kristin Nimmo couldn’t be reached for comment as they are out of the country but a previous press release stated that “neighbours feedback has so far been generally positive and where further information has been requested The Integrity Care Group have been delighted to be able to provide it.”

Wednesday June 19: Since appearing in an article in the Waimea Weekly, organisers of the Pay it Forward facebook page say it has taken off with donations continuing to pour in now that the group has now moved into their new premises. Their new base on the corner of Muritai St and Rui St in Tahunanui is now open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am till 2pm for donations of clothing, household items and furniture. The group need a hand to keep the stock in order and are asking anyone who could offer shelving to help them out. The Pay it Forward group will be at the car boot sale this Saturday at the Motueka Trading Post from 9am onwards, and are also organising a fundraising event at the Victory Community centre on July 18. Wednesday June 12: Since local rifle expert Greg Couper featured in the Waimea Weekly, he has had some great feedback on his products, exporting another three of his rifle muzzle brakes to Australia and fielding enquiries from locals. Greg now has a complete range of muzzle brakes from 223 to 50 bmg, and has some new additions on the way including some titanium brakes. Nature’s best a bit closer to home Nelsonians are lapping up nature’s best from a bit closer to home with milk now being sold fresh at a farm gate near Saxton Field. Julian Raine’s family has spent the best part of 80 years supplying the community with milk from Oaklands dairy farm, and now he’s bringing the business back to basics offering people a “homegrown” approach to milk. After a year of planning, Julian has invested $1.25 million into helping locals access fresh milk, providing it by the glass bottle out of two Italian vending machines. Julian says he believes all families should be able to buy their milk direct from local farmers and is pleased to be part of a growing trend, with similar ventures

popping up around the region.“I think it’s great that buying fresh milk is becoming more popular. People want to know where their food is coming from these days, what’s in it, and they also want to support Nelson people. They like to know it’s fresh, and local.” The vending machines hold 300 litres of refrigerated milk each and Julian says that eventually, one will hold unpasteurised milk, providing people with a choice each time they visit. By September he hopes to have a number of vending machines all over town, making his milk accessible to all. “I hope that buying fresh milk

becomes more of a norm. People should be able to connect with the farmer and speak to the person who produces the milk.” Julian also believes there are many health benefits in drinking Oakland’s milk, including the fact that it contains no permeates and it comes from cows containing the A2 gene, which is known for producing less lactose intolerance in people who drink it. Julian has plans to introduce a new milking shed onsite aimed at showcasing the farm to visitors who will learn about where the milk comes from firsthand. “There’s an ongoing story here, we’ll be adding products and adding to the brand, but at the heart of the business, there’ll be fresh milk.”

Protect us from GE: I would like to see TDC join Hastings District Council and put in place protections from GE crops for our farmers to investigate changes to regulate the use of genetically engineered crops in our region. Central government won’t protect our communities; it’s up to local government now instead. Growing a GE crop needs to be a publically notified activity that needs Resource Consent so the whole community has a say in making decisions about whether GE crops have a place in our community. Without adequate regulation the risk for GE is placed on GE free farmers whose crops have been contaminated from neighbouring GE farms and we will all pay for any clean-up from contamination. Milk in schools creates debate: I’ve heard it tastes disgusting. Jodie Seyb. My mum remembers the free milk from when she was a kid. I’m not happy with that. I thought that the offer of free milk for the kids was a good idea but with the choice taken from them, it’s not fair. Most parents can’t afford to give the kids plenty of milk to drink at home because of the cost, so free milk at school was a good idea. Now the choice has been taken from my kid and they’re missing out. School Snapchat pages shutdown The pages allow Snapchat app users to anonymously share photos on the web that were supposed to be private. The app was designed to automatically delete photos after being sent, but now many people, especially teenagers, are abusing the system by taking screenshots of the images and posting them online for all to see. Garin College principal John Boyce says his school was quick to shutdown a face-

book page featuring photos of Garin students as soon as it came to his attention last week, saying it is a form of bullying. “We had both parents and students come to us concerned about the page. Local dog walkers take the lead A group of dog trainers have been hitting the CBD hoping to become “Canine Good Citizens”. The four local women are currently taking part in a course run by the New Zealand Kennel Club and hope it will teach dogs to behave better around people and in different aspects of the town. Jenny Calder says the aim is to make all participants good owners, good handlers and to understand the bylaws involving dogs. “We don’t want our dogs to freak out when there’s things moving around in the city, we want our dogs to be friendly with people, children, and people with bikes,” she says. “We want them to be good citizens in a public area. You don’t want your dog barking at people, we want them to understand what is good behaviour.” Jenny says it is common for other members of the public to stop and pat the dog when she is walking it down Queen St and that it is important to teach them how to approach it correctly. “If someone gets bitten the dog gets blamed so

We don’t hear the reason behind it, just someone has been bitten by a dog. If a child gets bitten by a dog then the child has to have done something, unless it is attack trained. You shouldn’t leave a child with a dog anyway and these are things we are trying to teach the public.” The course is divided into four separate groups, the most basic learning simple commands and socialisation to bronze which deals with crossing the road and physical aspects of the town. Jenny says the group meet each week and is currently seeking more people to join.

Local wins top grower award Local man Jonathan Sutton has been crowned the Nelson Young Fruit Grower of the year after beating off tough competition from five other finalists from around the region on Friday. The competition, which was held at Hoddy’s Orchard, required contestants to complete a series of tasks essential to running a fruit growing business. Growing fruit is in Jonathan’s blood, he works at his families business Daelyn Partnership, which is well known for its boysenberries and apples, which it sells both locally and for the export market. As the winner of the competition Jonathan won $1500 cash, an Energie Fruit Trophy plus an orchard study trip to Hawke’s Bay that includes airfares and accommodation. He will also receive a one-day media and presentation course in Wel-

lington and an all-expenses paid trip to the Horticulture New Zealand Conference in July. He says the competition was a rewarding experience, but it wasn’t without challenges. “I am really pleased with my performance in the competition, but I really had to push myself as the level of growers was very high, they definitely didn’t make it easy.” says Jonathan. Jonathan, 20, will go on to compete for the national Young Grower of the Year title at the conference and says he’s excited to compete at a national level. “I’m really looking forward to the national event, it will bring new challenges and getting to meet other growers will be a lot of fun.” Canaan Balck, 22, who is currently a Block Manager for Hoddy’s Orchards placed third in the competition.

A warm roast meal on a wet miserable night appeals to many but the thought has eluded Richmond Roast House and Cafe owner Garry Higgins (aka Higgy) ever since the Richmond floods of 21 April this year. The Richmond Roast House was yet another Richmond business that was a victim of the floods, forcing it to shut its doors to repair the Roast House shop. ter destroyed everything it touched, including the walls of the building, but the most enduring problem for the Roast House was the rimu floor which was heavily damaged. “The floor soaked up so much water and it just wouldn’t dry, that was the longest process of getting us back into business,” says Garry. But with new gib board on the walls, another fresh coat of paint after just refreshing the interior at Easter, and some hard work on the floors, the building has been restored to its former glory.

Three of Nelson’s top female body builders have recently returned from the Australasia Natural Body Building Championships held on Australia’s Gold Coast. Paula Fearnley, Kat Bunting and Anne Jameson all competed under the team name Le Muscle Belles and achieved some excellent results. Anne was awarded third place in the Grand Masters Figure, while Paula placed second in the Masters Figure with Kat taking out first place in the same grade. The three ladies are all national champions but only Anne has ever competed at international level before. “It was a massive show and the best one I have ever been in, it was an amazing experience and we are very pleased with our results,” says Paula. The outcome is a great reward for the rigorous and dedicated training routine the team followed, involving gym sessions and a strict nutritional plan. Le Muscle Belles trained six days a week for two to three hours a day, consisting of mostly cardio and weight training in preparation for the championships. Their diet consisted of high protein foods such as chicken and fish with plenty of fresh vegetables. “A lot of people think body builders don’t eat much, but we probably eat more than the

average person, it’s just really clean food and high in protein,” explains Paula. The team has no time to relax now that the championships are over. Their intense training continues as they prepare for a Nelson show in August and the National champs which are to be held in Auckland in October where the ladies hope to continue their excellent form. To reach the Gold Coast, Le Muscle Belles received some outstanding support from the community who took part in raffles and quiz nights and offered sponsorship to make their trip possible. Le Muscle Belles would like to say a huge thank you to all their sponsors and everyone who helped them get to Australia.

Despite a wet weekend, the Wakefield Boar hunt attracted its best ever crowd over the weekend with a record 151 entries into the competition. The comp kicked off on Friday and organiser Susan Ferguson says she was extremely impressed with how many people turned out for the event. “This was our best yet after three years in a row, what a great turnout.” She says there were “more pigs than ever” and some “fantastic prizes up for grabs. By Nick Ippolito Do you have a deep longing; to belong somewhere, to have a group of people you can be honest with who you know and trust will never turn their backs on you, to have people who you can call family? Where do you find true community? I heard a story of a guy who used to be in a gang, and left everything to follow Jesus. He left the gang and got baptised and became part of a church community. After a while he stopped going to the church gatherings and when some of his friends asked him why he stopped going and he said, “when I got baptised, I thought that it was going to be like when I got jumped into my gang. When I got jumped into my gang suddenly everyone had my back, we became like a family 24/7. When I got baptised I thought this is what’s going to happen with the Christians. I didn’t know that it was just Sunday mornings and Wednesday Nights. I thought it was going to be family. I just had it wrong in my head.” When the pastor of this church, Francis Chan heard this he thought, “Oh no, wait a second! You’ve got it right, we’ve got it wrong.” Now hear me first, I’m a Christian and I love the church. But as a pastor myself I ask the questions, “why is it that so many people do not find true community within the church?” Is Chan right? Does the church have it wrong?

Today the church experiences pressure from the outside to perform and create excellent experiences for those who come to Sunday gatherings. Some people come into church with expectations on what they want to get out of it. If they do not like it they will leave and find a different one that will suit their taste or their beliefs. Much like finding the right cafe that provides their favourite coffee. True community is not meant to be a building we gather in and goes much deeper than just getting what I want. Does that sound like a family or does that sound like consumerism? To me, when I think of family I think of brothers and sisters getting together because of their love for one another, even with the crazy cousin you’re embarrassed by. Not to get things from each other but to give and help each other. When a church is working well I believe that the truest sense of community is displayed. God sent his son Jesus into the world to die for our selfishness (Galatians 4:3-6). Jesus describes the church as the family of God and anyone who follows him has been adopted as a son or daughter into God’s family. Jesus gives us true community and the great privilege of crying out to God as Father and everyone has been given an invitation to join the family. What will you do with your invite?

With all matches on the weekend cancelled due to field closures, the Stoke Cobras’ very faint hopes of going into the playoff series in pole position seem all but over. Mathematically, the Cobras can still reach first place with one round to spare, but it seems almost impossible needing to win, make up a 163 point deficit and hope that the Rabbits lose to the Wairau Taniwha for the first time this season. While topping the table at the end of the regular season does not secure the TRL title, Rabbits assistant coach Deon Charles believed it was still a significant milestone for the club. “Yeah I think it’s important for us to celebrate milestones like that along the way,” says Deon. “When you sit down at the start of the season you have your goals and

The rain was definitely the dominant factor in Nelson Netball on Saturday, so much so only Grades 1 to 4 were played at Saxton Courts. Conditions were far from perfect for the 10am round when Rival Cougars met Waimea College B. To their credit both teams played good, steady, wet weather netball – short chest passes were the order of the day which eliminated dropped ball and footwork calls. The teams could not be separated at the first break (9 all) or the second (16 all). Rival’s shooters Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid had the perfect record for the first half when they did not miss a shot. It was the first outing at goal shoot for Emma Deighton as she is more accustomed to a defensive role in the circle. While Emma was a little tentative to begin with, she settled in nicely and is another option in the offensive circle for coach, Lyn Olsen. The mid court of Ruby Jensen, Holly

JAB players get rewards

Waimea Old boys JAB teams are being rewarded by the generosity of a local business owner, who is donating the next generation of local sports stars a pizza when they win player of the day. The owner of both the Nelson and Richmond Domino’s Pizza stores, Billy Gao, has donated 270 pizzas to the rugby club each season for the last three years and says supporting local young people is important. “It’s great seeing the players of the day when they come in after their game and being able to congratulate them for playing well for their team. It gives me such a good feeling and I’m happy to do it.” Each player of the day for the club’s 18 JAB teams will be given a voucher for a pizza along with a certificate and a trophy after their game on a Saturday. JAB coordinator Jeremy Salton says the club was “extremely appreciative” of Billy’s generosity. “It’s really great to have Billy on board again this year, it is good to see the Billy Gao, owner of Richmond and Nelson Domino’s pizza stores with community backing the club and in turn the under 11 Red player Jeen Salton and JAB coordinator Jeremy Salton. club backs the community.” Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Saturday morning dawned with fairly bleak conditions ahead of the days rugby. With the A’s and B’s both scheduled to play in Brightwater, our Waimea ladies were the only senior team to play at home this week. Riwaka turned up with 10 players all keen for a run so it was decided Waimea would give three players and the game would be played 12 aside. Conditions underfoot were atrocious and with snow on the hills the air was freezing as the game was started. Waimea blew Riwaka out of the first half, getting most of their points on the board during this time. A quick shuffle up in both teams at half time saw a more evenly matched second half. As usual the Waimea ladies playing for the opposition showing no mercy on their WOBBA team mates and working well with the Riwaka ladies they kept the pressure on them throughout. Despite greasy conditions, the ball was kept in hand well by both teams and a great game was had by all. Players of the day, Anna Bradley and Stephanie Omundsen. Final score 83-22. This weekend Waimea are set to play against Stoke in what’s shaping up to be a tough game for both teams as they head towards the end of the season and finals. Public Notice pursuant to Clause 16 of the Resource Management (National Environmental Standards Relation to Certain Air Pollutants, Dioxins, and Other Toxics) Regulations 2004, of Breach of National Environmental Standard for PM10.

The Tasman District Council resolved to review the Introductory Bylaw – Chapter 1, 2006 pursuant to Section 158 of the Local Government Act 2002. In accordance with the Special Consultative Procedure provisions of Section 83 of the Act, the following Summary of Information is provided: Summary of Information The Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 1 – Introductory section came into force in 2006. The Local Government Act 2002 requires all bylaws to be reviewed within five years of coming into force. Once this Bylaw has been reviewed, it will need a further review in ten years time.

On this, the 18th day of June, 2013, Tasman District Council hereby gives notice that, PM10 concentrations exceeded an average 24-hour concentration of 50 micrograms per cubic metre (μg/ m3) as specified in Schedule 1 of the above Regulations within the area gazetted as Richmond Air Shed on the following two occasions: Day

Road shall have the same meaning as in section 315 of the Local Government Act 1974 and shall where the context requires include a street (excluding State Highways) and any place the public has access to, whether as of right or not. The removal of the “New Technology” section, viz: If, after the coming into force of any of these Bylaws, any person who wishes to install or use in the district any article or thing which had not been introduced into the district prior to the coming into force of these Bylaws and which, while not complying entirely with the provisions of these Bylaws, may in the opinion of the Council be properly installed and put into use, and which does not contravene the intention and spirit of these Bylaws, the Council may either generally or specifically authorise the installation and use of such article or thing, and may impose such conditions as it deems necessary. The section is now deemed to be irrelevant.
