Volunteer firefighters hit low The number of volunteer firefighters are in decline, and it’s up to the local community to get the numbers needed to turn up to callouts says assistant area manager for the Tasman Fire Service Tim Bennion. He says keeping the numbers up is a constant battle and puts the lack of available numbers down to a “transient population”
where people are unable to respond during the day time. “It’s the nature of the beast, a lot of the brigade volunteers are working away from the area they are servicing.” He says while local brigades are still able to respond, it puts the onus on the people already volunteering to be available and says “it’s up to the community to volunteer”
