Queen St upgrade first stage almost complete Simon Bloomberg There’s light at the end of the tunnel for retailers affected by the first stage of the Queen St upgrade, with the finishing touches being completed this week. But it’s been a long and costly process for the retailers after repeated delays extended the deadline for completion of the stage by more than two months. The first stage of the Tasman District Council’s $11million upgrade between Gladstone Rd and McIndoe Pl started on February 7 and was initially scheduled for completion in mid-May. The construction has had a big impact on retailers and businesses at the bottom of Queen St with Village Cycles co-owner Andy Reid saying they have noticed a decline in the number of customers since the work started. However, Andy says they are fortunate to have escaped the full impact of the construction because they are a “destination shop” and have very loyal customers. “We have been a lot slower in the workshop for sure because a lot of the people who bring bikes in to be repaired aren’t our regulars,” Andy says. “We’ve still had plenty of people coming into buy bikes

From rusty heaps to a classic Ford Capri Simon Bloomberg It has taken Norm Cross over 40 years to finally get the car he really wanted and now he can’t stop smiling everytime he turns the key and revs the engine of his classic Ford Capri. Norm bought his first car, a 1958 Worsley 1500, when he was 18. It was “a bit of a rust bucket with a rattly old engine” but it was all the young pipe
fitter-welder could afford. Norm says he’s “owned quite a few cars since then” although none of them were much of an improvement on the Worsley. But all that changed three years ago when the Richmond car enthusiast retired and splashed out on a classic 1974 Mark I Ford Capri. “I’ve always liked cars but never been able to own a really nice one,” Norm says. “When I re-
tired, I thought I’d treat myself.” “I was talking to my neighbour Tom and he had this V8 Cortina and that got me going. I got the Capri because I like the style and shape - it reminds me of the Mustang.” Norm says he and his wife Rose will be taking the Capri to this Sunday’s Nelson Classic Ford Car Club’s celebration of Henry Ford’s birthday at Rabbit Island. The founder of the
Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, and every year the club invites all Ford owners to attend the birthday celebrations. It will be the 20th year that the club has celebrated Henry Ford’s birthday and chairman Peter Soundy says the event is always popular. The celebrations will be held at Rabbit Island, just past the Rough Island turn-off, on Sunday starting at 10am.

First stage of Queen St upgrade almost finished FROM PAGE 1 but we are lucky because we are a destination shop and have loyal customers. “We’ll be pleased when they finish outside our shop, but to be honest I’ll be even more relieved when the whole street is done and everyone can get back to normal. It’s going to be hard on everyone.” Despite all of the impacts, Andy says he’s optimistic the end result will be worthwhile. “I’m pretty pleased with the look of it. It’s got a really nice feel to it.” First National Real Estate director Mark Rumsey is also relieved. “It hasn’t been without its challenges, given the car parking and noise from the roadworks that were extended unexpectedly, so we are really pleased it’s all coming together now,” Mark says. “We’d really urge customers to surge back into the area again

manager Richard Kirby says they “certainly feel for the businesses” directly affected by the delays in completing the first stage, but he’s optimistic that those delays
were “a one-off ”. He says the next three or four stages aren’t as complicated as the first and should proceed smoothly “unless we dig something up again.” Richard says that stage one, which should be officially opened on Monday, has been tougher than everyone predicted. “We initially thought it would be completed in mid-May so we are around two months late. I thought it would be tough but it’s been a lot tougher than expected. “There hasn’t been just one surprise, there’s been a series of ongoing surprises and that’s compounded everything. We’ve had to redesign things to get around these challenges and once one of the contractors gets disrupted it affects the other contractors as well.” Council is holding a morning tea for retailers in the Richmond Library on Monday to celebrate stage one “nearing completion”.

Influenza cases confirmed Kate Russell
After a quiet start to the winter, the flu season has hit Nelson. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) has confirmed that at least two people have tested positive for influenza, with an increase of patients being admitted with respiratory infections. “After a mild start, we can confirm that the flu season has started in the Nelson Marlborough region,” says Barbara Gibson, Clinical Nurse Specialist (Infection Prevention) at Nelson Marlborough Health. Nelson Tasman GP spokesman Dr Graham Loveridge also confirms there has been a sharp increase in colds and flu over the last couple of weeks. “It’s about usual for this time

of year but there hadn’t been much in May or June so it feels like a sudden onset.” He adds that there has been a good uptake of flu vaccine this winter, with many workplaces giving free flu vaccinations to help keep workers at work. “The flu vaccine gives good but not absolute protection - probably 60 per cent effective. “Avoiding contact with flu sufferers, hand-washing, avoiding touching your face, alcohol hand sanitisers and plenty of sleep all help, and those with the flu should stay home.” Richmond Health Centre GP Dr Richard Martin says they have noticed an increase in people presenting with flu-like illness over the past four weeks. “Last year was a particularity low year for flu rates so it is an
increase from last year.” He says that flu rates in other centres such as Auckland are higher than our region at present, so he is expecting flu rates to increase here over the next four to six weeks. Nelson Hospital specialist and GP, Dr Richard Everts, says “anecdotally there is certainly a lot of flu-like illness around, so we are reminding healthcare workers about how to prevent passing on viruses.” Scott Fry, owner of Fry’s Pharmacy, says he isn’t seeing a worse flu season than other years, but that “it’s always busy at this time of year with coughs and colds”. “I’d definitely encourage people to get their flu jab now, especially the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions such as asthma.”

Old family truck lost and found Charles Anderson When the 1974 Bedford truck came rattling down the road, Gary Griffith thought he had seen a ghost. “All I could say was ‘oh my God’.” The last time Gary laid eyes on it was 17 years earlier at his father Arnold’s funeral. It had belonged to Arnold for many years and he took great care of it, hauling firewood across the region. “It just reminds me of hard work,” says Gary. The truck was sold shortly before Arnold died in 2000. But that truck took Arnold to Motueka Cemetery to be buried. Gary’s son, Dion, remembered the truck too. Over the years he had seen it around the place but then lost track of it. That was until the window installer did a job for a neighbour in Mapua. He noted the truck in the driveway. It was looking a little rusted and needed some work. After a short conversation with the client Dion realised that it was, in fact, the family truck. “I couldn’t believe it was just around the corner all this time.” So Dion did him a quote for the windows.
ABOVE: Dion Griffith, his son JD and father Gary with the 1974 Bedford truck that Dion found and refurbished which used to belong to Dion’s grandfather. Photo: Charles Anderson. LEFT: Dion's grandfather's 1974 Bedford truck after he bought it, but before it was recently restored. Photo: Supplied. “Then I did him a quote for the windows with that truck included.” The owner had received offers before and always declined them. But once he heard the sto-
ry about how much it had meant to the family, he made the deal. Then the difficulty was keeping it a secret. Dion wanted to surprise his dad so he took it home and sanded
off the rust and tried to polish it up the best he could. Arnold was always pedantic about making sure it looked good. “He loved cleaning and painting these things. He always worked
on them.” That enthusiasm for cars has dripped down through the generations and now Gary and Dion own several muscle cars between them. Despite the rust, the Bedford’s engine still turned over like it did all those years ago. “I heard a rumour that Dion had found it, but that was about it,” says Gary. Then there was the big reveal. Gary was standing outside his house when Dion pulled up. “I couldn’t believe it,” Gary says. “It’s just fantastic.” It has become a great talking point with the wider family who are chuffed with the blast from the past. Dion’s nine-year-old son JD thinks “it’s pretty cool, too” - it reminds him of an character called Mater from the movie “Cars”. “So that’s four generation of our family with involvement in this truck,” Dion says. “It won’t mean much to anybody else but this truck means a lot to us. It’s quite sentimental.” All that’s left to do is to figure out a new number plate. “We think ‘Oh my God’ might work nicely,” Gary says.

Boating safety seminar for women
Coastguard Nelson’s, from left, Rosie Musters, Rosie Furniss and Maureen May are running a boating safety course for women. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Simon Bloomberg Coastguard Nelson is running a course aimed at giving women sailors the knowledge to be able to take the helm if there is an emergency and they are suddenly left in charge of the boat. ‘Suddenly in Charge’ seminars have been part of Coastguard Northern Region’s boating safety education initiatives and now Nelson is “borrowing” the concept. The course is run by women, for women, and covers key safe boating topics so that they can take charge of the boat in an emergency. Coastguard Nelson regional instructor Rosie Musters says the seminar is aimed at women with little or no boating experience although all women are welcome to attend. It will cover navigational rules, buoys and beacons, VHF radio operation, safety equipment and rope work, and lasts two hours. Although Suddenly in Charge will give women a good understanding of basic boating safety, Rosie says it is not a substitute for the Coastguard’s Day Skipper, Marine VHF Radio Operator and Boat Master courses. “There are lots of women out there who go out boating or sailing with their husbands or partners and don’t know anything about operating the boat because they are not the ones doing it,” Rosie says. “That’s okay until something happens and the women need to be able to take over. “It’s not a comprehensive course but it’s a first step for women who want to learn more about boating. It’s designed to give women some essential skills to keep themselves and their vessel safe.” Coastguard Nelson committee member Maureen May, who will be helping run the seminar with Rosie and Rosie Furniss, says it’s important to have a seminar run by women, for women, because it can be less intimidating for them. She says it’s also a better option than a husband trying to teach his wife the basics of boating safety because “that doesn’t always work very well”. “It’s like people trying to teach members of their own family to drive,” Maureen says. “It’s not always the best thing for relationships.” Maureen also stresses that the seminar isn’t stereotyping women, but is simply a response to “a very real need”. “We have around 400 members of the Tasman Bay Cruising Club and there’s also the Nelson Yacht Club and all the boaties who take their families fishing. If half of those are wives or partners then that’s a lot of women out in boats and not all of them have the knowledge to take over if something goes wrong.” Suddenly in Charge will be held at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club at 8 Cross Quay, off Akersten St in Port Nelson, on Wednesday August 2 from 7pm to 9.30pm. Registration costs $40 with all proceeds going to support Coastguard Nelson. For bookings and further information email maureen_may@xtra.co.nz or phone 0274866850.

Third time’s the charm for amalgamation Judene Edgar Reporter
Burglaries in Idesia Grove Police have received four reports of burglaries in Idesia Grove, Richmond, in the last week, and another five in surrounding areas. Police are investigating the incidents but say that it is a good reminder to residents to be vigilant in securing their homes. Anyone who has been the victim of a theft, or who has witnessed any suspicious behaviour, is asked to contact their local police station, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Stolen van burned out A van stolen from Trafalgar St in Nelson last Friday night was found burned out on Clover Rd in Hope on Saturday morning. Nelson police senior sergeant Blair Hall says there was also a burglary at the shop at Greenwood Park in Appleby on Saturday night when a sum of cash was stolen. Anyone who saw a white Toyota van around Hope late on Friday or early on Saturday please contact the police on 5463840 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Tasman District Council reviews drinking water health risks Tasman District Council are assessing the risk of contamination within council water schemes following the campylobacteriosis outbreak in Havelock North last year. Council will decide on July 27 whether to implement a number of recommendations including the installation of emergency chlorine dosing in all future water treatment plant upgrades, an assessment of water treatment options for rural agricultural water supplies, and a risk assessment of private bores.

It appears that third time’s the charm with the successful amalgamation of the rural and urban fire services across the country into one organisation, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), taking effect July 1. While it has been a sometimes fraught and drawnout process, chairman of the now-defunct Waimea Rural Fire Authority, Tim King, says that “the biggest challenge was that the majority of fire fighters are volunteers, so if it wasn’t done well they could have walked away”. Two previous attempts at amalgamation failed before they even got across the line due to a lack of support. The new Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act replaced the Fire Service Act 1975 and the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977, and recognises the increasing role that rural fire-fighters play as first responders to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, rescues, and weather-related incidents. Former Murchison chief

fire officer Paul Wilkins estimates that, for the Murchison fire brigade, less than 10% of call outs in a year are for fire. “This time it looks like they’ve got it right”, says Tim. “The big positive for the volunteers is that they now have a singular-focussed and well-resourced organisation that they fall under”. The main source of funding for the new service will be a fire levy paid on insurance for contents, property and motor vehicles. “Previously, funding for rural services has come from a mixture of rates, forestry companies and DOC, whereas the NZ Fire Service was funded by insurance levies”, says Tim. “While that has worked well in our area, in other areas some rural fire services are quite behind in equipment, training and support”. Getting “new” equipment has sometimes been quite a convoluted process or has involved significant fundraising by the local community. Murchison Volunteer Fire Brigade’s most recent fire truck was passed

Hair dressing tutor Zaley Gill says this year’s theme was “Then and Now” with students looking at fashion and hair from the past and giving their hairdos of today a novel twist. “All our hairdressers went really well, there’s so much pressure on them but they all stepped up, taking inspiration from everywhere and then really evolving their ideas into all these amazing hairstyles.”

Golden Oldies to converge on Christchurch Golden Oldies teams from around Nelson and Tasman will have an opportunity to relive their sporting glory days at the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration in Christchurch next year. The Golden Oldies sports movement started in 1979 with the first Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival. It proved so popular that Golden Oldies now encompasses 10 sports which, for the first time, will all be played at the same festival in Christchurch from April 1-29 next year. Golden Oldies festivals are open to anyone 35 and over – there is no upper age limit with players in their 80s taking the field at the World Golden Rugby Festival in Cardiff last year. The Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration will include basketball, cricket, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, rugby, softball and squash. These sports have a history of participation in Golden Oldies with many teams enjoy attending bi-annually Golden Oldies Festivals around the world. Hagley Park will be the event hub, hosting the rugby, football, cricket and netball. Nunweek Park, Cowles Stadium, Mizuno Ballpark and Papanui Bowling Club will host the other sports, with golf played across Hareward, Christchurch, Pegasus and Terrace Downs clubs – the squash venue is still being finalised. Organisers are expecting around 10,000 competitors with many of those coming from outside Christchurch and overseas. To enter the festival or for more information, go to the website christchurchgoldenoldies. com.
Rocking the house
The Split Apple Rockers, just before going on stage for their second performance on TVNZ’s The Naked Choir, from left, John Foes-Lamb, Ernie Tarling, Dave Baker, Andrew Palmer and Craig Starrenburg. Photo: Supplied. Judene Edgar It might have been lacking in nudity, but TVNZ’s a cappella singing competition The Naked Choir, certainly didn’t lack in talent, with local group The Split Apple Rockers delivering two soulful performances. When TVNZ first put out the call for entries, the Split Apple Rockers weren’t even a group, but thanks to the help of choral director and midwife Celia Rodley, they were one of eight choirs who made it to the live TV show out of the 60 that auditioned. Despite not making it
through to the finals, singer Dave Baker says, “for five blokes who sing a bit, we did really well – but it’s all thanks to Celia that we went as well as we did.” Celia is also involved with Ma’s Place, a drop-in centre for mothers and young families needing support. After identifying a lack of family support services, Richmond couple Carol and Paul Marshall opened Ma’s Place out of their own home 18 months ago. Carol, who is also a trained midwife and mother of three, says “we feel very privileged to be able to share
what we have. “Having it in our own home has kept costs down and enabled it to happen.” Carol says that people from all ages and backgrounds, married and single, use their services. Ma’s Place provides baby gear, meals, support, education, mentoring, assistance to access services and housing assistance. When Celia approached the Split Apple Rockers about performing at a fund-raising concert to support Ma’s Place, the group jumped at the opportunity. “It’s a great cause and a nice
way to say thanks to Celia also,” says Dave. Also performing at the Ma’s Place Variety Concert this Saturday July 29 will be singer-songwriter Bryce Wastney, solo guitarist Shane Cammell, Mad Beat Dance hip hop crew and others. There will be baking for sale by the Waimea Soroptimists and raffle tickets available. The alcohol-free event is being held at the Hope Community Church, Ranzau Rd, Hope, from 7pm. Tickets are $10 per person, $20 for a family and children free, and are available at the door on the night.

Gemma’s musical career hits all the right notes Judene Edgar She’s back home for the holidays, but 18-year-old Richmond pop singer-songwriter Gemma Christall is not spending her time catching up on sleep, although she does hope to catch up on some TV – The Cul de Sac, that features her song ‘Your Head’. Inspired to start writing by her guitar teacher when she was 10 years old, she looks back on her old songs with a good degree of humour. “When you write you need to draw on your own experiences, but at 10 I didn’t really have a lot. They’re pretty funny to look back on now.” In Year 10 she joined her first band, One Notch Higher. “It was quite different having to think about all of the composition aspects for a band – what are the drums going to do, what is the piano going to do, and how do we get the audience involved.” Gemma entered Smokefree RockQuest with One Notch Higher for two years, making it into the regional finals, before going solo in 2015, winning the Nelson section, and then joining Nelson College
for Girls band Lane 3 in 2016, taking out the regional finals. Her recording breaks have come through the Play it Strange songwriting competition, which has seen previous winners such as Georgia Nott, Kimbra and Annah Mac. While a songwriting competition, the Play it Strange entry involves submitting lyrics and a recording of your song, and Gemma says she couldn’t have done this without the help of her producer Ryan Beehre, formerly of Minuit. In 2015 her song ‘Curse’ was selected and in 2016 ‘Your Head’, which has given her music a wider audience, including Greenstone TV who selected her song for the latest episode of The Cul de Sac, which aired last Sunday evening on TVNZ 2. Now at Auckland University studying Pop Music and Communications, Gemma is very aware of the competitive industry that she’s signed herself up for. “It doesn’t really matter how long it takes. It’s just about getting my music out there,” she says. Check out Gemma’s music on her FB page gemmachristallmusic.
At home for the holidays, Gemma is still busy composing. Photo: Judene Edgar.

Swim teacher wins award Simon Bloomberg Richmond Aquatic Centre swim school manager Lisa Stove’s contribution to water safety was recognised this month when she received a national award for teaching swimming and water safety. Lisa has been involved in swim coaching for more than 20 years and has managed the swim school at the Richmond pool for the past 13 years. She is also an accredited teacher with Australasian swim coaching organisation AUSTSWIM and last week was awarded their Aotearoa Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Award at a function in Auckland. Although Lisa is thrilled to receive the award, she says it is a direct result of a lot of hard work by her team of 23 instructors. She says the swim school instructors at the Richmond Aquatic Centre do an amazing job teaching thousands of children to swim every year. “The award is about the team and what goes on here every week,” Lisa says. “I’m lucky to have very good staff and lead a strong team with a very good team ethic.” Lisa says one of the keys to the swim school’s success is that it is continually introducing innovative new programmes. Although the school retains a focus on teaching people to swim it has introduced a wide range of other classes including water safety and aquatic-based fitness activities. “We have been heading towards water safety for some time – it’s been a big emphasis. We’ll have over 1000 school kids taking 10 water safety lessons here in term three, so it’s getting popular. “We’ve also initiated the Zero Tolerance for Drowning campaign last year and provide free water safety talks at kindergartens. Our water safety programme for Nelson’s new refugees is also popular and for many of them it is their first experience in a swimming pool.” It’s also that innovation that has helped sustain the steady increase in the number of people using the Richmond Aquatic Centre. When Lisa started at the pool 13 years ago, 300 children were attending swimming lessons each week – now they teach 1200 a week with an additional 1000 taking water safety lessons through their schools. “We’ve tried really hard to make it accessible for

everyone in the community,’ she says. After teaching swimming and water safety for almost a quarter of a century Lisa still retains her passion for the job, although sometimes she admits she needs to get out of the office and “go and sit poolside” to remind herself why she loves her job. “There are days when the admin gets overwhelming so I just go and sit poolside and watch the four and five years olds learning to swim. It’s amazing seeing it all unfolding at that age – it always gives me a real buzz.” Lisa’s award means she is now eligible for the AUSTSWIM national awards to be held in Australia in September.

Jessie Johnston Soroptimist International of Waimea has recognised the efforts of 10 of its members, who together have given the group 155 years of service. The members were presented with certificates and a cyclamen last Monday when they were given the opportunity to share some of their highlights from their time in the group. Monday night was the first time members contribu-
tions had been formally recognised and Soroptimist International of Waimea secretary, Diane Thomsen, says it will become an annual occurrence. “We’re going to be giving certificates out every year at five-year milestones, starting at 10 years. It’s important to us because, as in a lot of organisations, there’s always a drive to get more members, but in doing so sometimes organisations lose sight of the fact that retaining their
existing members and all of the knowledge and experience that they bring is vital. We feel it’s important to show that we value our members and having this recognition every year is a way that we can do that.” When speaking about their most memorable Soroptimist experiences, the ladies highlighted a common theme, the enjoyment they found in friendships within the club and the wonderful sense of value and team-

Giants' garage sale unearths sentimental singlet Jessie Johnston Reporter
jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Local basketball fans got the chance to grab a piece of Nelson basketball memorabilia last Sunday when the Mike Pero Nelson Giants put some of their old gear up for sale. “We’ve got a big container that we put our gear in between seasons, so we just had a big clean out of all the stuff that was just sitting there,” says Mike Pero Nelson Giants administrator, Janie Granger. Items included former playing singlets and shorts, track pants, balls and other Nelson Giants-branded items. “The gear isn’t ancient, when the sponsors change you can’t use the gear anymore and it seemed a waste to dump it when people can get some use out of it,” says Janie. When Janie’s son and current Giants player Ali Granger was looking through some of the items prior to the sale, he came across the singlet of his friend and former teammate, Brad Maclachlan. “A lot of the time you don’t get to keep the uniform be-

Right: Ali and Brad in Franz Josef earlier this month. cause they need it for the next year’s pre-season, and then they just sort of get put away and never get given to the people who wore them,” says Ali. Brad and Ali got to know each other through the Under-17 South Island team. Originally from Te Anau, Brad was encouraged to further his basketball career else-
where and Ali, who was already part of the wider Giants training group, told him to come to Nelson College, which he did. After playing for the Nelson Giants for a year or so, Brad decided to focus on a career in helicopters, and began training to be a pilot. Two years ago, he was involved in a helicopter crash that left him a
paraplegic, although he still works for a helicopter business down in Franz Josef. Ali, who recently got back from visiting Brad, says he hasn’t told his former team-mate about the singlet and will be posting it down as a surprise. “I would say he does have some gear from when he played but
that was six or seven years ago, so it’s going to get worn out. It’s good memorabilia and he’s just bought a house so he can hang it on the wall in his man cave or shed,” says Ali. “He’s got a whole new life down there and most of his friends wouldn’t even know that he was a semi-pro basketball player.”

The meeting concluded with the farewell of the association’s outgoing secretary, Barry Inglis. At a recent community meeting held by Fonterra, it was mentioned that Fonterra is directly responsible for approximately $34million going back into the local economy in the way of wages/salaries, payouts to farmers, and all of the different contractors that the farmers in-turn employ. Food for thought. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, August 7, at 7.30pm, in the Brightwater School staff room.

Theatre Fest 2017 is held annually around the country and this year Wakefield Country Players will be hosting round one, encompassing the top of the South. The event will run over three sessions and includes 12 different plays from Wakefield, Nelson and Havelock. Each group will perform just one act that is less than 50 minutes in length, with adjudicator David Chambers determining who will take home the awards and possibly advance to the next level of competition. “I think it’s a really good opportunity for people to see what other groups are doing and it exposes you to different styles
and genres. Someone once likened a one act play festival to a bus, if the first one that comes along is not to your liking, there’ll be another one along in half an hour,” says Wakefield Country Players’ Jen Amosa. “It’s a really good opportunity for people, who are perhaps less experienced on the stage, to get up and give it a go because it’s a shorter play, you’re not having to do a full-length version that goes for two hours. It’s also performed on a bare stage, although you can use your own props, but it forces people to get really creative in how they portray things because you don’t have the huge sets.” Performances will be spread across three sessions, so each group will only perform once, with a prizegiving bringing the event to an end. The adjudica-
tor can also choose to select one or more of the local plays to compete in Christchurch in mid-August in the Upper South Island festival, covering Canterbury, West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough. From there the top eight one act plays within the country will compete in the national finals in Wellington in September. The Top of the South District One Act Play Festival will be held in the Wakefield Hall, door sales only. The first session runs on Friday, August 4, from 7:30pm, while Saturday, August 5, will see two sessions at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $10 for one session, $15 for two and $20 for all three. The festival will also be a bring your own picnic event. For more information phone Tracy on 541 9663.

It’s great to be able to grow with Richmond and while we may be expanding, we’re still proud to offer the same professional services and friendly practitioners.” Doctors Lucia Mitchell and Janine Bailey of Washbourn Medical Centre, and their staff, will be joining the Richmond Health team as of August 1,
and Dr Andre Bonny will join on August 21. Lucia graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1981 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1983. She then completed general practice training in Greymouth, gaining Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1998, before moving to Nelson in 1999. Lucia greatly enjoys the variety that comes with working in general practice, with geriatrics, dementia and palliative care being particular areas of interest to her. Janine trained in Otago before heading overseas, returning to Lyttleton where she worked for a time in hospital medicine. Janine and her husband bought
a practice in Motueka and enjoyed 12 years there. Janine has spent the last 10 years working in Richmond and says she enjoys the ever-changing nature of general practice. In addition to teaching at all levels, her thirst for knowledge has seen her continue study in a variety of fields from acupuncture to neurolinguistics, as well as achieving Masters level papers at Otago University in cardiology, ethics, advanced teaching and learning techniques, and more recently, bio and neuro feedback. regular visits from medical specialist Dr Richard Everts, an ear specialist, and local counsellors, while Waimea Physiotherapy permanently operates out of the practice. These all complement the in-house services offered by Richmond Health Centre’s team of 10 general practitioners.
Their central location in Richmond’s Warring Car Park is not just convenient to the main business and shopping areas, it also makes them highly accessible to other neighbouring health services including Koru Ultrasound, Pacific Radiology and the handful of pharmacies on Queen St and in the

Just a thought...

Locals get crafty for winter market Arts and crafts made by talented locals were showcased on Sunday during the Pretty Crafty Winter Market, held at Stoke Memorial Hall. From clothing, jewellery and homewares to candles, dog accessories, hair accessories and more, the market encompassed a wide range of products, all hand-made. Nelson woman Veronica Griffith of VBee Food Wraps says her reusable bees wax food wraps are inspired by her desire to go plastic wrap free. “I
had a bundle of material and I had a bundle of beeswax, so I combined the two together. I don’t use any plastic wrappings anymore, and for me it’s basically just getting people to think about using something different to plastic wrap,” says Veronica. Tahuna and Richmond stallholders, Betty Ross and Tanya Colegate, of Foxy Dogs NZ say their creations are inspired by their canine friends. “Tanya and I are both dog owners and we decided that we needed to
do something to dress up the dogs of Nelson. We thought dog bandanas are quite good for dogs who don’t actually like to wear clothes or jackets. We’ve both got dogs like that, but you still want to put something cute on them because they’re your babies,” says Betty. Organisers Kala Wray and Sally Shaw say this is the second Pretty Crafty Market they have organised. Entry to the market was a gold coin, which will be donated to a local charity.

McIntyre is Hair
Owning investment property should be a rewarding experience and when it comes to getting the most out of your rental, whether it’s in Richmond, Mapua, Brightwater or Wakefield, Nicki Morris ticks all the boxes.
Cherie McIntyre from McIntyre is Hair has always welcomed aspiring hair stylists into her Beach Rd salon. As a talented and experienced stylist herself, Cherie has a lot to share with those studying and is proud of her latest student, Megan Wilkinson, who recently passed her finals to qualify. It’s a double celebration as Megan will also be going in maternity leave at the end of August, leaving her clients in the skilled hands of Louise Simpson.
“During many years involvement with property I have worked with a number of property managers. In most cases they did not live up to their own statement of intent, however I am pleased to say that at last I have found a property manager who not only lives up to what she says she will do but so far has exceeded expectations. Her honest, no nonsense yet thorough approach to the management of my property is refreshing change from the normal” – Roger “I have known Nicki since she became my property manager in 2010. I compliment her on her work ethics, efficiency and prompt three month inspection reports. During her time as my property manager, I have found Nicki faultless and honest and can certainly recommend and her rate her as a first class property manager” – Pat
“I just love McIntyre Is Hair. The salon is stylish while also being very relaxed and everyone is so friendly. The team do a wonderful job every time with my very difficult hair. It always feels like a treat having my hair done there.” – Adrienne

Whether your old trellis is looking tired, you need to block out the neighbours or perhaps keep pets and small folk contained in style, give Kirsty at SLK Trellis a call today.
For just over 30 years, Sunrise Cleaning Services Ltd has been working alongside the Nelson business community, keeping offices, retail spaces and other work premises clean and tidy. Sunrise Cleaning Services is also proud of the business relationships they have formed over the years and their commitment to supporting local suppliers within their operation.
“Kirsty, I’m thrilled with the finished product. Painted it the same colour as my deck and now enjoy not looking at my neighbours so much. The neighbours are also quite thrilled.” – Joshua “We needed to do the front fence on our property as we just had a small concrete wall and when we shifted into the house, our dog decided he could jump it. We didn’t want to do anything solid so we thought about putting some posts up and then doing five big trellis panels in between. We talked to Kirsty, she showed me some panels and it was exactly what I was wanting. I would highly recommend Kirsty’s work as she puts a lot of thought into her product. The quality of her work is great, she helped us decide on what we wanted and talked to us about things to consider and the timeliness was great.” – Tania
“We have been working with Bruce and his team since the re-opening of the Theatre Royal in 2010.The cleaners work to our very busy show diary and do an excellent job. Roy Tomlinson Haven Realty Roy Tomlinson is no doubt a tried and trusted name within the real estate industry, having entered into the profession after 15 years as a farm advisor. The skills he gained within this rural background and his love of working with people has made him an asset for those looking to sell their homes. Roy believes quality of service is a key factor in real estate and he is personally committed to providing that for his clients, the fact many people recommend Roy to their friends and family is a fantastic endorsement of the service he provides. Having worked in real estate for over 20 years and having achieved performance awards with all the companies he has been associated with, choose Roy for the successful sale of your home. “Roy has what we consider a rare quality today and that is someone who stands by their word and in turn does what they say they will. Integrity and honesty are two seemingly rare but wonderful qualities we received from Roy as our agent.” – Jamie
BabySpace’s team of teachers are not only highly qualified and experienced in early childhood education, they are committed to working with families to provide the best care for their infants and toddlers. “Our first child attended BabySpace four years ago and we did not hesitate to enrol our second child. I love that the same teachers are still there after a number of years, this really says something about the atmosphere and how the teachers are looked after as well.” – Sherie and Andrew Schwass “The teachers have nurtured our children’s interests, supporting them with their new challenges and made them feel safe and secure. We feel like BabySpace is an extension of family, the teachers being like surrogate aunties for our kids.” – Rebecca “We can’t thank you enough for the wonderful care you have provided for our children. The trust I’ve had in their education at BabySpace will be very hard to match, I think we have been so spoilt in having our children with you over the past four years.” – Anderson family

“When we decided to build a new home on our property we had no reservations in choosing PR Construction to do our build. We had seen the completed homes that they had already done in our area and were impressed enough to not even try looking for someone else. They have been extremely professional in all our dealings with them and the house is coming along just as we expected. PR Construction are managing the build to the extent that all we have had to do is make decisions on design and décor. We would recommend them to anyone.” – Dick and Liz Hocking

Lost opportunities cost Waimea Simon Bloomberg A lack of finishing cost Waimea Combined Schools a win in their UC Championship rugby game against Christ College at Waimea on Saturday with the home team conceding a late penalty to lose 10-7. Waimea dominated the first half, creating enough opportunities to establish a commanding lead. But instead, Waimea failed to capitalise on a succession of line breaks to go to half time locked at 0-0. “It was frustrating losing by three points when we should have won,” coach Glen Grant says. “The referee said after that he lost count of the number of line breaks we made in the first half, but we just didn’t finish off. “We pushed passes and lacked patience and I suppose that just comes down to experience. The boys played well but we could have won.” Glen says the team also gave away too many penalties which proved fatal in a low scoring encounter.
“The boys were a little keen and got penalised for getting up offside a bit - that cost us with that last penalty.” Glen says he was pleased with the way the forwards competed against a big Christ College pack but expects things to get even tougher against Timaru Boys High on Saturday. He says set pieces and defence will be critical against the giant-sized Timaru pack on what is almost certain to be a heavy ground. “I’ve talked to the other coaches and they said that Timaru is probably one of the biggest packs in the competition. “We did well to match it with Christs but this will be a step up – our scrum and pick-and-go and defence will have to be very good.” However, Glen says there is a chance the game will be postponed after last weekend’s flooding that hit the lower South Island. A decision will be made later in the week with the likely alternative being a mid-week game later in the season.

TEED!! Tasman produced some excellent results, upsetting many of the favourites, before suffering a heartbreaking 85-81 overtime loss to Hawkes Bay at the Aon National under-15 boys basketball final in Dunedin on Saturday. The Ed Book-coached team set a goal of reaching the top eight before the tournament but had to quickly revaluate that goal as they kept knocking over the big teams. Tasman dispatched Otago, Southland and Waikato in pool play before upsetting No1
ranked North Harbour in the quarters and Waitakere West 85-80 in the semi-final. Tasman continued its good form in Saturday’s final against Hawkes Bay and the two teams were locked 72-all after regular time. However, Hawkes Bay edged ahead in overtime to win the title against a gallant Tasman. ““I was pleased with the way they composed themselves when they were facing some real pressure,” Ed says. “The guys really stepped up and hit their shots when they needed to. “They did very well consider-

Dan hangs up his boots Simon Bloomberg
Wanderers hooker Daniel Perrin is preparing to open another chapter in his rugby career after hanging up his boots following the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. It wasn’t the fairy-tale ending Daniel had hoped for, with his team losing to rampant Nelson 41-19 in a surprisingly one-sided final. Although Daniel was disappointed his team couldn’t secure its third consecutive senior title, he can certainly take pride in a career that culminated in nine Super Rugby games for the Crusaders and Chiefs and 19 games for the Makos. “I can remember making my debut for the Crusaders against the Hurricanes,” he says. “Being a born-and-
bred Cantabrian that was a massive moment for me and my family – it was a real highlight.” Daniel’s journey to Super Rugby started as a four-year-old for a New Brighton “wee nippers” team coached by his mother Julie, and watched closely by his father Dave who was hooker for the senDan Perrin in action ior team. He earlier this season. progressed to the Aranui High First XV before making a memorable senior debut for Christchurch in 2003.

“I remember playing my first senior trial against a couple of gnarly old guys who were the incumbent hooker and prop. They pinned me in a scrum and I couldn’t move my legs – it was a tough introduction to senior footy.” However, Daniel’s rugby career took off when he moved to Nelson to join Wanderers and Nelson Bays. The rugged hooker became an original member of the Tasman Makos and, after a series of impressive performances, graduated to the Crusaders and later the Chiefs. “The player cabinet was pretty full in Christchurch so when I got a call from Wayne Love from Nelson Bays I moved up here and have never looked back. It was their last season in division two and I knew that the Makos were forming the next year, so that was the big plan. “It all came to fruition for me and I got the Makos number 26 jersey. I had a couple of years with them and then got a crack at Super Rugby for Crusaders and Chiefs.” After his Super Rugby career ended, Daniel switched his focus to club rugby, taking on the role as player-coach of Wanderers as they returned to the senior competition. And now that he is retired from playing, Daniel hopes take the next step in his coaching career. “It’s good to give back to the game and I’ve got a real passion for helping all the good young talent around the region. Being an original Mako, you want to keep that legacy going so ultimately I’d like to have a crack at that.”

Three of the region's four senior men's football championships were decided on Saturday, with Richmond Athletic the big winner. Richmond won two titles, the men's second and third divisions, with Nelson Suburbs winning the fourth division competition. The first division and women's divisions haven't been decided yet. Richmond's second division team was a comfortable three points ahead of its nearest rivals, FC Nelson reserves, when it lined up against FC Nelson Locomotive at Jubilee Park on Saturday. A draw would have seen them win the league. But a strong second half powered
Richmond to a 4-1 win, sparking celebrations on the club's main pitch. It was the second year in a row the club has won that division and coach Toby Gaskin says it was much tougher this year. "At the start of the year I said to the committee 'don't expect us to win it this year'. We only had about four players at the start, but we picked up a few more and the core six or seven players have really held it together." He says despite a three point lead heading into the game, there was never a thought to play for a draw. "The decision was that we had to go for the win but Locomotive put us under a lot of pressure. It was 1-1 at half time and it was only in the last ten minutes that we

pulled away." In the third division Richmond Thistle hosted FC Nelson NMIT, both teams were tied on 33 points heading into the game but, with a far superior goal difference, all Richmond needed was a draw to have its name engraved on the trophy. Player/manager Nick Rose says the team was keen to get a good result after the previous fixture against NMIT saw a 4-2 Richmond win reversed to a 3-0 loss after Richmond were deemed to field an ineligible player. "We felt like we owed them, so we were really happy to get a 5-1 win and win the league as a result." He says that Thistle have been transiting from a social side to one bringing younger players

through and that has helped them win the league this year. In the fourth division Nelson Suburbs Rovers were another team in the box seat, with a handy three point lead over nearest rival FC Nelson Masters heading into the league's final game of the year. Hosting Wakefield at home, Suburbs put the game beyond doubt by half time as they led 5-1. Two second half goals extended the lead. Player/manager Phil Williams says the beer was flowing after the win. "We played bloody well so I'm rapt we got the win. The last time we won this grade was about five years ago so it was great to win it again. There was a bit of beer flying everywhere and a bit of a sing song, it was great."
