Heads of the school When Tom Rackley was just a Year 9 student he always dreamed of becoming a head student at Waimea College. Following his announcement as one of the four students to lead the school in 2013, he couldn’t

be happier. “Since then it was always the precedent all throughout school. It’s like the pinnacle at the school. Everyone looks up to the head students,” he says. Joining Tom is Hugh Knight, Hannah Arnold and Brittany Irvine.

Hugh agrees that is the biggest leading role and he always wanted to “aim high”. The head student role requires the quartet to represent Waimea College at events outside of school and take top leadship roles within it.

“I disagree. I think they should keep it the same if not make it more often. There are too many old dangerous cars driving around already.”

“Six montly is the one I’d go for. Once a car gets to five years old then it needs to be checked and trimmed otherwise they just get let go.”

Let’s get a few things straight about the whole Weetabix/Marmite affair. I, myself and other English shop owners only sell these products to people who want them because they love them and have eaten them all of their lives. We don’t sell them to directly oppose Sanitariums products as they don’t like those products. Weetabix is a company in the UK not just a product. They make Ready Brek and other products with their name in the top corner, are Sanitarium going to block that as well? When Sanitarium came into my shop and threatened legal action they were really smug in doing so, saying that if I don’t comply it will become very expensive for me. They then sent an email to me demanding that I give up all of my Weetabix to them and the names and addresses of anyone I had ever sold Weetabix to. I thought Sanitarium was a company

the same as me but obviously they are the law and this is their police state. Any way they were obviously losing the popularity stakes so they dropped the Weetabix issue only to go behind the scenes and block it’s entry into the country. I tried to buy the name Weetabix but Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand refused saying it was too similar to Weet-Bix and too similar a product. Their point being it might ‘confuse’ you, the unthinking public. I would hate to see you in the supermarket if you came across two different brands of Baked Beans. To destroy that pallet full in Christchurch is a crime. I have kept my head down and said nothing since they left me alone but I am getting sick and tired of their behind the scenes tactics. Surely we should have the freedom of choice to eat what we want to eat. Weetabix is not your brand Sanitarium, it belongs to Weetabix. Bob Wren, English Bobs Emporium, Richmond.

WoF change could risk drivers’ lives FROM PAGE 1 Mitsubishi Lancer with four bald tyres. Someone had cut the front springs and those springs were actually gouging into the inside of the tyres and it had no rear brakes on it at all,” says Barry. AA motoring services general manager Stella Stocks says while AA is still working through the proposals, there was potential for lives to be at risk if testing was reduced. Stella says she is concerned at one pro-

posal for new vehicles that would mean a new car would not be tested for roadworthiness until three years into ownership, and then annually after that. The government says motorists will save money not having to test their vehicles so often but Tony believes they should be less focused on the financial side of things and more worried about safety issues. “My concern is the safety, knowing what’s out there on the roads with my wife and kids.”

Rising insurance fees has forced the Forest Lodge freemasons from a site it held for close to 140 years. Wakefield’s Forest Inn has been the brotherhood’s home since 1873 but its new port of call is in Nelson City’s Nile St where three other Masonic lodges are based. Forest Lodge trustee Rod Marshall believes it is the result of rising insurance costs following the Christchurch Earthquake. “One of the lodges here closed down so there was also a vacancy. We were encouraged to consolidate instead of having buildings scattered around the place. I could see our costs were only getting greater out there and the hall was only used two nights a month,” says Rod. “I think it was the Canterbury Earthquake. The insurance was the big one we looked at. The water goes up and the rates go up and the power would go up but we made the decision when we heard about the insurance. There is only so much you can ask your members to pay.” The Forest Lodge was initially set up by the Freemason members that lived out in the country and were unable to travel into town. There are still a number of members from that area that car pool into the new premises. The Forest Inn site was sold after just three

months on the market. It was zoned as residential and is now occupied by a couple that were previously based in Best Island. Rod says it was sad leaving for two reasons. “It was our own building so we could do what we wanted when we wanted. Here we have to learn to fit in with other lodges. Not only that, but the other lodges used to enjoy coming to us as we were out by ourselves.” There are five different Masonic lodges in Nelson; those are the Forest Lodge, the Nelson Lodge, the Whakatu Lodge, the Victory Lodge and the Southern Star. The Southern Star is the only one of the five that does not go by the New Zealand Constitution. Freemasonry traces its beginning to the ancient craft of stonemasonry which flourished in several European countries for centuries. Their practitioners built many of the great churches, cathedrals and other buildings during this era. The men developed a strong moral and ethical code which, in essence, survives today in the form of Freemasonry. The Forest Lodge is open to anyone over the age of 21. Currently there are more than 50 members in the Forest Lodge – a figure that has dropped over the years. For further details on the Forest Lodge, visit http://theforestlodge116.org.nz/

Car owners get planting Tahunanui beach had some new sand dunes added to it last week, thanks to Honda drivers. The Honda TreeFund tree planting day is held annually at the back beach as a part of the council’s sand dune recovery programme. To date Bowater Honda has provided over $70,000 worth of funding for over 13,500 trees which have been planted on Tahunanui Beach, in Appleby, the Moutere and on Haulashore Island. Last Wednesday the team from Bowater Honda, along with some dedicated local customers, turned up at the “raised car park” on

the Back Beach Rd to literally plant a truck load of trees into the sand dunes to aid in the sand dune recovery. The planting day is a result of Honda’s unique TreeFund initiative which sees 13 native trees planted for every new car sold. Honda has been funding tree plantings nationally since 2004, and to date over half a million trees have been planted around the country. Ten native trees are funded for every new car that Honda New Zealand sells, with another three funded by the dealerships (Bowater Bowater Honda customer Maarten van Geldermalsen plants at Tahunanui Beach Honda) as sellers of that car. So for every last Wednesday with from left; Matt Enright, David Eagle, Steve Williams, Janny new car sold, 13 trees are planted. van Geldermalsen and Martin Bonny. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson Grey Power will elect a new executive this week with a special general meeting to be held on Thursday. Last week Neville Male, spokesman for the 33 members who requisitioned the meeting, placed an advert in the Waimea Weekly which caused some confusion he says. “Since the recent public notification about the forthcoming special general meeting for Nelson Grey Power members to elect new office holders and an executive committee I have received a number of enquiries asking why this SGM is being managed on behalf of the 33 financial members of Nelson Grey Power, who requisitioned the SGM, and not by the official secretary of the association.” He says it was not a preferred way to handle the meeting but is allowed in the association’s constitution and that the most important thing now is for members to come along and elect a new executive after former president Gordon Currie and five other committee members resigned several months ago. The special general meeting is being held at Warnes Bowls Stadium in Stoke from 1pm. “With a new executive appointed and a subsequent re-energising of Nelson Grey Power as an organisation there is much to be done to address the concerns of older persons in our community,” says Neville.

Habitat for Humanity extends its reach Habitat for Humanity is well known in Nelson for its work with new houses but the local branch is extending its reach and hoping to catch a new wave sweeping the movement and the country – renovations. For several years Habitat for Humanity in other centres around New Zealand have been promoting a new service called A Brush with Kindness and Nelson’s chairman Rob Silcock says it’s about time Nelson caught up. “We didn’t jump on it straight away because we were a bit sceptical about it but it’s taken off big time around the country and it’s another way we can help people.” The scheme isn’t a “freebe” says Rob but does give people the opportunity to get upgrades on their house with the help of a well-respected organisation. “What we’re doing is trying to target people who don’t know where to go or who to get in help and for $20,000 for less we can bring it up to a habitable standard and that is one of our mottos, that everyone deserves a reasonable home.” Once the job – from landscaping, to a new bathroom, to replacing rotten weatherboards, to installing insulation – is complete, Habitat will then work with the home owner to go to their bank and refinance their mortgage with the added value of the house taken into account and use that money to pay Habitat back for the cost of the work. “We will get in there and help out and let people know if their job is viable or not because we do have a $20,000 limit but we’re looking forward to getting stuck into it.” Anyone keen to find out more can call 545 0050 or email nelsonchair@habitat.org.nz.

Golf club nears 75th jubilee Phillip Rollo

One of the most stunning golf courses in New Zealand will reach another historic milestone when it turns 75 years old in November. The Tasman Golf Club on the Kina Cliffs is widely regarded as the most picturesque nine hole golf course in the country. If you are walking along the beach, don’t be surprised to see a scattering of golf balls in the sand as one of the link’s traditions is to hit a ball from hole three into the ocean. The course was first purchased in July 1937 by Harold Dodson for just 170p. He bought the land off the Baigent family and the club eventually paid him back. It is believed that there were just

15 members when the club first started. There is now 181 members and they come from right across the Nelson-Tasman district. The capital value off the course is well into the millions and its main source of income is from holiday golfers over the summer period. Its most well-known player is former HSBC national nine hole golf winner Jill Gillian and its top event is the Kina Open which is held every November. Former prime minister Bill Rowling is a former member of the club. Former club president Alan Tait says it is a “good old country golf club” that is heavily involved with the local horticulture scene. “A lot of young golfers that have gone on to bigger things, it’s like a

breading ground. It’s a nice friendly club and it’s not too expensive,” he says. Shirley Heine, who is the oldest ladies member, says “everyone is on the same terms”. “Some of the old golfers that have left for various reasons will hopefully come back and we can catch up and tell some good stories.” For its 75th jubilee, the Tasman Golf Club is encouraging all past and present members, along with potential new ones, to experience what is easily Tasman’s most scenic course. The official jubilee will run from Friday November 30 to December 2. Cost is $15 for golf on the three days and $45 per head for dinner. IHC bring Meads to town

IHC is bringing one of the world’s greatest ever rugby players to the region for its fundraising evening at the Nelson Suburban Club next month. Sir Colin Meads will headline the night that also includes a three course buffet dinner and plenty of spot prizes as the Nelson IHC Association looks to secure key funding for future projects. Nelson IHC Association chair Dell Williams says Sir Colin is “an icon”, not only because he is widely recognised as the greatest All Black of all time but for his work with the national IHC body. “He was branch president where he lives for

many years and he’s a life member for the national society,” she says. “If you haven’t heard of Colin Meads then you’ve been asleep haven’t you? He’s quite well known.” Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Nelson Suburban Club for $60 per person. The evening will be held on Sunday October 7. This is the first major IHC fundraiser that has been held in Nelson for the past four years. “We need to make the public aware that IHC still exists because there is no longer an envelope appeal with door knocking. The recognition factor has probably slipped but we could use the money.”

Tourism boost through Hobbit Nelson Tasman Tourism has announced it plans to use the The Hobbit films as a unique marketing opportunity to attract visitors to the area. The region, which is already home to three film locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as the “One Ring” maker Jens Hansen Jewellers, is expected to attract high numbers of Middle Earth fans in the coming years. There was no missing the cast and crew of The Hobbit in town during filming in 2011, however actual film locations will not be made public until the screening of each of the three films. NTT has announced it will lead its marketing campaign with the tagline “Nelson Tasman: Have A Hobbit’s Holiday” which has been approved by Warner Brothers for exclusive use. Working closely with Tourism New Zealand, Lynda Keene stated that “the primary goal is to cement Nelson Tasman as a must visit destination for Middle Earth fans.

From My Desk

The funds will go towards a lot of “behind the scenes work” that includes paying for carers, maintaining an IHC home in Stoke which includes a new $20,000 playground, paying for usage of the Ngawhatu Swimming Pool, supporting a day base in Richmond and many more services. The New Zealand Government does not pay for the majority of activities and services involved at IHC. There are 110 people on the Nelson IHC Association membership list. Nelson IHC is one of the only services for intellectually disabled people that includes day time activities.

Who is Elim? $1.5M church to Elim Church on Main Rd Stoke, has been a fixture of the community for decades, providing a safe place for locals, a helping hand and a place for children to have fun. But what is Elim? What does it mean and why that name? Elim churches were birthed out of the Welsh revival. The Elim Pentecostal Church was founded in 1915 by a Welshman named George Jeffreys who was an outstanding evangelist and church pastor. A well-known evangelist, Smith Wigglesworth, came to New Zealand for crusades in 1922. This was the beginning of what was to be known as the Pentecostal Church of New Zealand. In August 1949 negotiations were set in motion by the Conference of the Pentecostal Church of New Zealand to link up with the Elim Church of Great Britain. The Elim Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom has more than 500 churches and more than 9000 churches in many countries around the world. The Elim Church of New Zealand has more than 40 churches throughout the nation with significant churches in the main centres, where thousands worship. The name Elim was picked as it was the name of an oasis mentioned in the Bible, located on the escape route of the Israelites from Egypt.

It was the idea of finding shelter and refreshment that inspired the name Elim. Every year Elim holds its Annual Conference where over 1000 people from around New Zealand gather for three days of worship, teaching and fellowship. It is its belief that Elim has a significant part to play in the world today and they are confidently looking forward to what God will do in the future. Nelson pastor Richard Batchelar says the church is going strong and aims to help people, care for people and do good work in the community. Richard and his family have been at the Nelson church for a few years now and he says attendance has doubled since and he is looking forward to seeing it grow further. “It’s actually about loving people and helping people do life. It doesn’t matter if you’re in our church or not, we just want to help people. We say to people ‘don’t let life do you, do life’.” Richard says it is exciting times for the church, with a new building now approved, a full preschool, an after school care programme and courses for families from budgeting advice to parenting and relationship help, there is something for everyone. “We care, we want to help and we are at the start of something very exciting here.”

Elim Christian Centre pastor Richard Batchelar with his wife Maria and children from left; Bella, 2, Eva, 10 months and Joel, 4.

Elim strongly believes that a church is not about the building, it’s about the people. With that said, the church is about to enter an exciting time in its history, building a brand new facility on its Main Rd Stoke property. The $1.5 million building will house a main hall, office and administration block, meeting and conference room and will allow for expansion of its popular after school programme. The new church, which will be built next to the current church, has resource consent from Nelson City Council and a target date of late February is pencilled in for work to begin. Church pastor Richard Batchelar says the new church will cater for

future growth of the church but also give the community a new facility. “It will be an asset for Stoke and hopefully nice and appealing to the eye for people that drive past.” The new building will house a 250 seat auditorium, a 70 seat conference room, offices and storage space. It will sit right next to Main Rd Stoke with the current church demolished after the build for car park space. The church currently has about a third of the cost already saved and is applying to various funding sources for a contribution towards the building. Richard says the current timeline will have the church finished and ready for use by late October 2013. He says he hopes it will be more

A church involved in our community Elim strives to have a positive impact on its community and you could hardly doubt it’s done that in Stoke. Aside from running popular school holiday programmes, after school care programmes and a full pre-school, Elim also volunteers in the community and runs various courses to help locals. Two years ago Elim took its close relationship with Stoke School a step further to provide lunch for its pupils each Monday during winter. Pastor Richard Batchelar says there was a need and it was something positive the church could do, so each Monday students get a bowl of soup and a bread roll to fill them up and get them ready for an afternoon of learning. Richard says it’s rewarding to be able to help and while the church has a family focus, it isn’t all about the children. Elim also runs relationship enrichment courses, parenting courses and free budgeting courses, which are WINZ approved. Richard says in the next five

years the church hopes to have a budget centre established to help people get out of debt. Of course Christmas is a really important time of celebration for Elim as a church. So each year members of Elim give financial donations, which enable the church to put together Christmas Boxes to help families in the community have an awesome Christmas Day. “We hear about families who may be doing it rough over Christmas and put together a tailored Christmas Box packed full of quality food, treats and even presents for the kids. The person that nominated them takes it around and says ‘here, we hope you have a great Christmas’.” “A lot of people find Christmas hard so why not make it nice for them,” says Richard. “Again, its about loving people and helping them do life. We just want to help people.” Richard says when the new church is built they will have better facilites to do more work in the community and be able to bring people in to its holiday programmes.

Serving the community, city, nation and the world.

Habitat for Humanity is an International organisation that started in the United States in 1976 and was introduced to New Zealand by Ian Hay of Keith Hay Homes in 1993. Two years later former Keith Hay Homes salesman Julian Shields and Di Cressey set up the Nelson affiliate. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to building simple but decent houses for families in need. Its mission statement reflects that objective: “Habitat for Hu-

manity is a Christian organisation that works in partnership with people of goodwill and families in need to eliminate sub-standard housing by building and selling simple decent homes on an affordable basis.” Habitat seeks to give people a hand up, rather than a hand out. Families chosen for Habitat homes are expected to provide $500 deposit plus 500 hours of their own time, whether it is helping in the actual building or by way of raising funds.

Hen Houses & Poultry Supplies Spring is upon us and Appletons Hen Houses and Poultry Supplies is bursting with new life. Heritage chicks are hatching, week old balls of fluff are chirping and a mother mallard duck has even moved to Appletons to raise her ducklings in the sunshine. If you have been thinking about keeping chickens, spring is the perfect time to get started. Appletons carry everything you need to set up, from day old chicks, to feed, feeders and drinkers, shavings, hatching eggs and a wide range of kitset hen houses and chicken coops that can be customised to your needs. Fionna and Gordon Appleton run their business from the heart, and what started as a few guinea fowl when they built their home in 2004 snowballed into the full blown poultry supplies business that it is today. Fionna and Gordon have a love for birds, and Appletons on Mt Heslington Rd has thrived as people have shared their enthusiasm and seek their help and advice for keeping chickens. Passionate preservers of the heritage breeds, Fionna and Gordon dedicate their lives to rare heritage breed poultry and have a busy time hatching many different varieties. Heritage breeds are good layers and are popular, striking looking backyard chickens to keep, with many people choosing to keep the traditional breeds. They also stock the brown shaver for those that like to keep the commercial hybrid as a backyard layer. Developed, designed and

Beginners can look to Fionna and Gordon who will help you decide what chickens would best suit your lifestyle and backyard taking the stress off getting started. “If you are new to keeping poultry and would like some specialist advice on how to set up and keep your chooks at your place we are very happy to provide this service for our local customers,” says Fionna. Deciding on your set up will depend on what you want to get out of your chooks, if you want lovely laying girls, they’ll need a safe, secure place to sleep

and lay. Chooks also enjoy foraging and having access to free range, which is perfect for the backyard or paddock but can also be kept happily confined to a run. Having a safe and enjoyable place for your chickens to live and lay is important, and Gordon custom designs and builds kitset hen houses and chicken coops. When Gordon and Fionna started out they built their own hen houses, and friends liked what they saw so much that they requested their own. With their hen houses a huge success, Gordon now builds kitset houses and coops to order, shipping the houses to anywhere in New Zealand. Fionna says customers are amazed at

An illustration brought to life in the form of a ceramic design has been awarded the overall prize at the South St Gallery Awards held at Craft Potters on Friday. The artist behind the creation is Ana Aceves of Richmond. Ana says this is the first piece of craft pottery she has done based on the character Maia, of which she has been illustrating for many years. She hopes to complete an exhibition telling the story of Maia in the coming years. It will be presented alongside the illustrations. The design depicts Maia sitting on a wharf fishing with her dog Peachy. She has caught a message in a bottle, instead of a fish, which is why it has been titled ‘Message in a bottle’. “I’ve only been in the club for a year so this is the first time that I’ve done something like this. I just like to do happy little moments. I want people to look at it and smile.” The piece took Ana two weeks to complete but she says experts could probably do something similar in just one day. “I enjoyed putting her together, especially going from the illustrations suddenly to see her in

a three dimensional form was fun. It wasn’t tedious.” Mike Rodgers of South St Gallery sponsors the awards evening which is held annually at Craft Potters in Hope. The awards are contested by members of Craft Potters and the students from the Diploma of Ceramic Arts course that is run by the Otago Polytechnic. There were four separate categories with some entrants then divided into sections depending on how many years of experience they have. Ana, who is originally from Spain but relocated to Nelson from Christchurch last year also took out the mixed media section for designs that incorporate other materials. Juliette Fox, Richard Suter and Sandra Mead were the three winners in the hand building section while Jack Robinson and Tanja Elzenheimer took out the wheel thrown section and Sharon Trustum was first in the alternative kiln firing division. Overall, there were 56 pieces in the competition which was judged by well established potter Christine Boswijk. To view Ana’s illustrations visit www.anaaceves.com

Double glory for Federal Phillip Rollo Federal had two reasons to celebrate on Saturday as one of New Zealand’s oldest hockey clubs further cemented its status as Nelson’s premier club. Federal left it late to secure a 3-2 victory over NBS Stoke in the Hockey Nelson division one mens final, following prior success by the women’s side who dispatched Waimea College 4-0 in the game before. Craig Brett, who scored two goals for the Federal side in the men’s division one final and also coaches both the men’s and women’s teams, says it was a “pretty big thing” to have both teams in the final, let alone coming home with the silverware. “The women’s game was probably more expected but the men’s game could have gone either way. We were lucky to come

back and take it out,” he says. Federal has now won the women’s division one final nine times in the past ten years. It also won the Top of the South title just two weeks ago. But this is the first time in around four years that both genders had taken Nelson’s top prize in the same season. “At the end of the day there is a great pathway at the Federal club. It’s one of the oldest in the country, it’s well over 100 years old. We had eight teams out of 14 in the finals [over various grades] this year, so it’s a pretty good result.” Craig says the women’s side is playing its best hockey in a number of years, having spent a handful of seasons as a collective, only filtering a couple of younger talent into the ranks each season. The side did well to mark Waimea College star Kelsey Smith out of the game, as it was all one way traffic in favour of the champions.

Tennis open day a big hit The Tasman Tennis Club’s push to get the whole family involved in the sport was given the tick of approval by the 100 new players that took part in its open day on Saturday. Each tennis club in the Nelson-Tasman region held their open day, welcoming children in the morning and adults in the afternoon. son and is also targeting getting the whole family along. Club president Derek Ballman was pleased with the turnout. “Yeah it was quite good especially in the morning. I’d say there was about 70 kids there,” says Derek. “We had quite a few new players in the afternoon. We just want to promote the club and show all of the different coaching aspects that we can offer to players from around Nelson.”

The region’s first introduction to a mini motocross championship is being hailed as a success by its organisers. The Nelson Motorcycle Centre Mini Moto X Champs, which is run by the Nelson Motorcycle Club was held in Quail Valley over the weekend and gave some riders a perfect warm up before the national championship in Upper Hutt next month. Riders from Blenheim, Takaka, the

West Coast and Christchurch contested the championship against dozens of Nelson’s best four to 11 year olds. One of the visiting riders is the current 50cc national champion. Chase McManaway of Wakefield beat Keira Crichton in the intro class; Toby Walker of Stoke was first in the trail bike class, beating Braydon Hardy and JaneyRose Reyland-Batchlor; Mitchell Smith of Greymouth won the 50cc

unclutched class, edging Brightwater’s Nico Palmer-Donaldson and Krugar Griffith of Takaka; Christchurch’s Cobie Bourke was too good for local duo Luca Palmer-Donaldson and Ezra McFarland in the 65cc 7 year old to 8 year old class; while Hope’s Bailey Aldridge reigned supreme in the 65cc 9 to 11 year olds class. A handful of Nelson riders will make the trip to the Mini National Championship on October 5 and 7.

The Tasman rippa rugby team has finished fifth place at the national championship, its highest ever placing. The team, which was represented by Richmond School for the second time in two years, was beaten by Canterbury 5-3 in the quarter finals before going on to beat Poverty Bay 6-4 and suffering a narrow loss against Auckland in the final game of the tournament. Rippa rugby is a popular non-contact form of rugby where players rip velcro-fastened tags off each others’ waists instead of tackling. Teams are chosen to represent their city at the Wellington tournament following a regional competition that was held earlier in the year.
