Best of both worlds

What a Labour Weekend it was for Nelson art enthusiasts and sport’s fans. On Friday night the city hosted its biggest street party – the Masked Parade, followed by the carnivale. Thousands turned out to take part or watch the annual spectacular, which is a part of the Nel-

son Arts Festival. But the parade was only the start, a jam-packed weekend of shows, as well as Art Expo Nelson, kept art-lovers more than satisfied. Then the sport. Our Tasman Makos beat Taranaki on Sunday to make the Mitre 10 Cup final against Canterbury this weekend,

the team’s second final in three years. Waimea Old Boys star Marty Banks was the hero of the game scoring 21 points including a last-minute try to secure the win. It’s certainly been a weekend to savour and you can read all about it in today’s Waimea Weekly.

“When I had a tooth out and it got infected, it took a couple of weeks for it to come right, I had to go onto antibiotics, it was very painful.”

“When I went to the school dentist, I thought they were practicing on me. It wasn’t with the high speed drills we’ve got now or the injections. It put me off dentists.”

Debbie Springer, Brightwater. “The bill, I haven’t had a particularly nasty one, just in general, when you get a tooth ache you always think how much it’s going to cost.”

Ancell Brown, Richmond. “When I was seven years old, in those days the drill was foot operated, they had to chase me round the waiting room, every time the drill went into your tooth it slowed down.”

Queen Street upgrade works start

The first phase of work to upgrade Queen Street’s underground water pipes started on Monday when the Tasman District Council’s contractor Downer began laying a small water pipeline on the northern side of Richmond’s main street. Downer started laying the pipes between Gladstone Rd and Sundial Square, as well as installing communication and power ducts. Other work will involve moving, wherever possible, above-ground power boxes out of Queen St. The work is the first phase of the multi-million-dollar Queen St upgrade, in which ageing and undersized stormwater, water and wastewater pipes will be replaced. The street’s surface will also be reshaped to better control floodwaters and redesigned to make the street safer, and more accessible for all pedestri-

and allow the major upgrades to be carried out faster. “Downer will be doing some of the work at night to minimise any disruption to businesses and users of Queen St. A small number of car parking spaces will be unavailable at times while

Simon Bloomberg Christmas will come early again this year for one lucky Richmond shopper, thanks to the Waimea Weekly’s Shop ‘n’ Win competition which starts on Thursday. The popular competition gives shoppers a chance to win $5000 in cash just before Christmas when they shop at participating retailers in Richmond. All shoppers who fill out an entry form when they make a purchase at one of the 40 participating shops or services in Richmond go into the draw to win $5000. Last year, the Richmondbased competition received a record 98,000 entries and Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says he is expecting another big year. He says participating retailers can easily be identified by the Shop ‘n’ Win poster in their front window and includes all the shops in the Richmond Mall. “We’ve got about 40 shops and services, like car repairs, around Richmond involved,” Steve says. “This will be our 10th year and we can’t wait to hand over $5000 cash to a lucky shopper - it will be a

Masked Parade highlights another top arts festival Brittany Spencer From taniwha to astronauts, and butterflies to dragons, the streets of Nelson were swarming with people for the 21st annual Masked Parade on Friday. Over 1500 people took part in the ‘Flights of Fancy’ parade while a large crowd flocked to the streets, watching schools, groups and individuals fly on by. Among all the colour and creativity was Tasman School’s unique, pure white entry - ‘A Gondwana Dream’ – which won it both the school category and the Kim Merry Supreme Award. to all the multi-coloured entries, and featured native creatures such as moa, tuatara and kiwi walking alongside a long white cloud feature - a nod to the country’s Maori name. In the school category, Tasman was followed by Mahana School, while in the group category Electrix Cheerleading placed first, ahead of Girl Guides Nelson. The Purple Lepidoptera won the individual category, with Dragon and Whelp as runner-up, and Waimea Intermediate were given the highly-commended award. Judge Elaine Ang from the Nelson Youth Council says, while Tasman stood out, judging this year’s Masked Parade wasn’t easy. “It was a really hard decision, especially with so many awesome ideas, and you could see they had all put a lot of work into it,” she says. Tasman School parent Saramea Waterman says the parade was “absolutely fantastic”. “It was a great atmosphere. The crowd was so responsive, and it was just such a fun thing for the kids to be involved in,” she says. “There is just so much creativity in Nelson, and it’s great to see it out here on the streets.” Nelson Arts Festival team leader Axel de Maupeou says the event

couldn’t have run any better, and he was impressed by the

sophistication of all the costumes displayed. “They were fantastic - the level of creativity and imagination displayed was absolutely mesmerizing, and almost all were made out of recycled materials,” he says. The parade kicked off the last weekend of another successful Arts Festival, which officially finished yesterday.

Axel says that this year’s festival went very well, and the feedback they have received so far has been “overwhelmingly positive.” “I think it just shows that we’re still able to engage new audiences, while still keeping our fellow supporters interested - it is a great achievement for us,” he says. Kate Russell The Nelson Tasman Hospice has found new land in Stoke. Frans Dellebeke of the Nelson Tasman Region Trust Advisory Group, at a recent meeting, described in detail the planned move from the existing Manuka St establishment to a new purpose-built Hospice, where 1.4ha of land has been purchased in Suffolk Rd. The Hospice announced earlier this year that they needed a new site, due to the planned expansion of Manuka St Hospital, meaning the current site wouln’t be big enough for both facilities. Frans told Nelson Weekly in March that they were hoping to find a site in either Stoke or Richmond. He also said the move would be a “huge positive step forward” for the Hospice, giving them the opportunity to create something much better for patients, families and staff. The new building, which needs to be up and running by 2019, will also be able to offer more outdoor space and gardens - something that has always been on the board’s wish-list.

Public ‘the highlight of Art Expo’ says artist

Brittany Spencer Interacting with the public was the highlight of last weekend’s Art Expo Nelson for Hope artist Greta Greenwood. Amidst 150 artists at the Saxton Stadium, Greta, whose studio is the kitchen table in her Hope home, was back for her third Art Expo and says it was the public who made it so brilliant. “Seeing people come back after buying or looking at your work last year is incredible and that’s the glory of the Expo, you get to stand there by your work and have those interactions. “It’s always a bit of a mystery as to who bought it and where they put it but here you get to know the buyer and have a really nice interaction with them and then you see them come back year after year and it’s really encouraging.” From the Mapua Inlet and Rabbit Island to Lake Rotoiti and Lewis Pass, Greta’s painting are all places locals can connect with. And they did, Greta sold two of her 12 abstract landscape acrylics within the first half an hour of the Expo opening on Saturday. “A lot of people like the free and loose style I use, but I think the main thing is that they connect with the local landscapes. For some of them it’s their favourite place and others have memories attached to the locations, they feel a bit of a heart response because they know the places.” Expo organiser Nic Foster says the event was a great success and they had thousands of people through the door. “We had lots of people from out of town attending and there were many significant sales,” he says. There were nine award winners, with Jane Blackmore of Wellington winning three awards.

unchanged. “The district’s water supply and its funding is one of the big challenges for this council,” Anne says. “We also need to maintain the on-going balance of rates and services.” Sue says the election of three women on council has increased its diversity “which is good for

any group”. However, Sue says they hope to add a lot more to council than diversity. “I think, throughout the campaign, people were saying it would be nice to have female input on the council but I don’t think people voted for us because we are women. I think they voted

for us because of what we can bring to council.” Mayor Richard Kempthorne recommended Tim King as deputy mayor at the meeting and councillors unanimously supported that recommendation. Tim has been deputy mayor since 2001. The next full council meeting is in Richmond this Thursday.

“We need to make sure we understand exactly what the community feels on all issues,” Sue says. “Sometimes we can get trapped by a loud, vocal viewpoint that is a minority so we have to be careful to avoid that.” Although it is a new-look council, Anne says the key issues facing councillors this term remain

SO LD

The three new women on the Tasman District Council are excited about bringing their “feminine” viewpoint and more diversity to the table but say one of their main goals is to “maintain community involvement and transparency” in council’s decision-making. Anne Turley, Sue Brown and Dana Wensley all attended the inaugural council meeting in Richmond last week, joining other newcomers Kit Maling, Trevor Tuffnell, Paul Hawkes, David Ogilvie and Dean McNamara. Although the meeting was largely ceremonial, Dana contributed to one the new council’s first decisions by instigating a change in council’s quorum for subcommittees from two members to two elected members. Dana says that change will help maintain “transparency and community involvement” in council decision-making because elected members can be held accountable by ratepayers. Sue and Anne also consider maintaining transparency and community involvement is critical for councillors with Sue saying “we need to make sure we listen to the community and give them opportunities to come forward with their viewpoints”.

Saints and Angels event back

Richmond Baptist Church’s, from left, Paula Nicholas, Craig Keelty and Jan Rolfe, are helping to organise Saints and Angels event this weekend. The free community fair was held for seven years and attracted around 3000 people annually before it was put on hold in 2011. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg The Richmond Baptist Church is resurrecting its popular Saints and Angels event after a five year recess so that families have an alternative to Halloween. The free community fair was held for seven years and attracted around 3000 people annually before it was put on hold in 2011. However, the church decided there was still a need for an alternative to the “pagan Halloween celebrations” and has organised a free, family-friendly event for the community. “We haven’t run it for about five years but it was just so popular we decided we had to bring it back and offer it to the community,” one of the organisers Craig Keelty says. “We wanted to give something to the community but we also wanted to have an alternative to Halloween so kids aren’t out walking the streets trickor-treating. “We like to see kids enjoying themselves but the church is against the principal of Halloween. We are offering a family-friendly alternative for the whole community.” Craig says the organising committee has had “great support” from businesses around the district and has a enjoyable evening planned. There will be entertainment and food for the children, including a bouncy castle, pony rides, mini-jeep rides, a sausage sizzle and ice-cream sundaes - Nelson Giants basketballers will also be there to shoot hoops with the kids. There will be tea, coffee and cakes for adults as well as educational fire safety demonstration and a St John Ambulance display. Everything will be free. Saints and Angels will be held at the Richmond Baptist Church grounds at 123 Salisbury Rd in Richmond from 5pm to 8pm on Monday, October 31.

Police caution against social media to catch thieves: They should be caught regardless of how or who. Information is a key part of solving crime and what's the problem with getting as much information as possible. Ben Cooper.

barriers up? Craig Kempton.

I wonder if traffic lights would be helpful, though I find the intersection ok when driving straight through. The problem seems to be the traffic coming from Wakatu Estate! Ann Gallot.

Police don't want to be shown up. Katrina Prendergast. I agree. If someone is wrongly implicated then the damage caused could be horrendous. I've blocked Nelson Snippets for that very reason. Social media has a far reach, so those disseminating information have a responsibility to ensure they're right. But the police seem to be a little bit behind the times. Perhaps they could engage through their own social media site more to engage with the public for help. I'd prefer Nelson Snippets to be sharing police posts rather than be the police. What happens if Nelson Snippets' involvement damages a court case and then would-be criminals get off? That would not be a good outcome. Lisa De Gray.

People want results, and the results speak for themselves. Daniel Mur-

So police 10/7 can ask for help, but an independent social media site that pretty much solved the case is " inappropriate". Adam Pearce. The police also have a Facebook page where I've seen them ask the public for help.. What does it matter as long as the criminal are caught. Besides, the best way to catch one is word of mouth because people like to gloat after they have torched a poor family's car. Paige Hawkins.

A stop sign isn't going to do anything. As a frequent user of that intersection it needs a roundabout with a bypass and merge lane for south bound traffic, similar to the Whakatu Drive/ Quarantine Road setup. The issue is that it's impossible to turn right out of Elms St in traffic because of others turning in. Roundabout will fix that. Heath Bowman.

It's good to see the community fighting back and letting the crims know we don't accept being ripped off. Elaine Wills.

If social media works go for it, why wouldn't you use any tool you can to find crooks. That's why we have security cameras and guard dogs etc. Plucky Piwakawaka.

Such a lovely man. My friend and I use to walk past his house every day on our way to Intermediate, morning and afternoon you would always get a friendly wave out the window. Stacey Flowerday. I worked in a supermarket in Stoke about 35 years ago and Bruce used to come in and give us each a freshly picked flower, even back then. Such a lovely man, has a heart of gold. So nice he still does that, good on you Bruce. Lynda Sturkenboom. Well done Bruce, I am glad your kindness has been recognised. Sue Capstick.

Well done, everyone! Congrats to Tasman School for the Supreme Award :) Ruth Jarman.

Bruce used to bring me flowers when I worked at Kabas in the mall. He found me at the cafe in Mitre 10 after I left the mall and would bring me flowers there too. Almost 10 years of putting a smile on my face. Sue Macdonald.

Worked at Silver Moon kiosk in Richmond Mall he was often walking around with a trolley and handing out flowers. Bless him. Karen Ferguson.

It's not the intersection that needs improving, it's the driving. I've never found that intersection "too hard" to use. Chaz Snith.

kept it. Such a special man. Courtney Milne.

Masked parade another success: I loved every minute, well done! Kaushalya Cowland.

Flower man Bruce Haycock recognised: I remember him always giving me a lovely rose, when I worked at Pak ‘n’ Save. Paula Fearnley.

Deadly intersection to be changed: Man, people suck at driving in Nelson. That was 80km as long as I have had my licence and was the main motorway, people just need to be more aware of what is going on around them. Stefan McLean.

If someone is identified, it doesn't matter how the identification is obtained. The info is passed on so Police can act. Exactly how it happened here. Before social media, this person or persons would have got away with it. How about everyone work together instead of putting

Fight 4 Victory 3 is on at the Trafalgar Centre on November 5. Our very own Give it a Go Girl Brittany Spencer hopped in the ring with former contestant Emma "The Riddler" Riddell to see if she could match it with the best. Spoiler alert -- she couldn't. My sanity was definitely in question as we drove up to Victory Boxing. Who in their right mind would spar against 2015 Fight 4 Victory's Emma "The Riddler" Riddell, with absolutely no experience? Oh wait, that’s right, me. After a quick how-to, it was time. In the far corner and standing at what seemed like seven feet, the lethal lawyer had some postcourt aggression to work off, in my corner there was nothing but a barely-five-foot-me, giggling nervously and shaking in my sneakers. We were given the signal and if I’m being perfectly honest, my hands were sweating before we bumped gloves. They say the most basic rules of boxing are to keep your chin down and gloves up, I didn’t need a knock to the head to forget that within the first few moments. I was failing at protecting my face and trying to coordinate my

I was even more determined but if I was going to land a hit it had to be now. Jab, jab, hook, I was out for blood but I would have been happy to slip under her defences just once. And then it happened. My glove connected with The Riddler’s nose, and I had a moment of king-of-the-mountain glory. But in typical Brittany fashion, I was so stunned I'd hit her that I forgot we were sparring and apologised repetitively, shattering my nonexistent boxing cred. I put everything I had into that last bit but I couldn’t help thinking it was the longest 90 seconds of my life. It wasn’t until later that the guys sheepishly admitted to stretching each round out to two minutes. For the last fifteen seconds, I went full attack, my gloves were down, my chin was up but I was gunning for it. When that final signal came, my arms dropped and hung at my side, my chin finally went down from fatigue rather than technique and the urge to lie down on the canvas had never been so strong. Inevitably, Emma easily took it out but that didn’t matter, I got a look at her red nose and that was all I needed, I was chuffed.

Too many retirement village options? Specialised legal advice from a local firm

The Nelson and Tasman region has over 11 retirement villages. With an ageing population, our great climate and the region’s reputation, it is hardly surprising that even more are planned. The decision to enter a retirement village can be very tough at an emotional level, this is made even harder given some of the complex ownership and residency models used by the various retirement village operators. The good news is that the Retirement Villages Act 2003 provides a safe framework and it ensures adequate information is provided to those considering their options. Unfortunately, you are still left to interpret and decide on the wide variety of ownership and cost models available. At Hamish.Fletcher Lawyers we regularly help our clients better understand their rights and obligations under each scenario. Often it’s the rights that you don’t have that are important and need to be clearly understood. In order to make the right decision, a careful consideration and balancing of factors needs to be undertaken, such as; health care requirements, personal lifestyle preferences, affordability and financial assistance, flexibility and estate planning. Your lifestyle options are often more

restricted the greater your health care requirements. Thoughtful consideration needs to be given, not only to your current health care requirements, but your likely requirements going forward. If you have a clear understanding of what your future health requirements might entail then this can have a bearing on your decision. We assist clients in ensuring they are fully aware of the legal and financial impact of not only entering a village, but moving between different occupancy options within a village and when they exit or change villages. Estate planning is a very important step prior to any decision being made. It helps if this is done well in advance of any potential move, in fact we encourage you to review your estate planning when you first enter retirement. A clear estate plan can help remove anxiety when a decision needs to be made, as the affordability and flexibility factors have been resolved allowing you to focus on your health care needs and lifestyle preferences. With offices in both Nelson and Richmond, we have experience with most village’s contracts. At Hamish.Fletcher Lawyers we deliver high quality legal advice fast, to ensure you are getting great advice when you need it most. Business Update. Adv.

Alf’s Dragoons lead students into battle

With their newspaper swords raised and their battle cries piercing the quiet spring day, Hope School students marched into a re-enactment of the Battle of the Somme last Thursday. Overseen by Alf ’s Fifth Waikato Dragoons, a regiment of Alf ’s Imperial Army, the day was all about hands-on learning for the students. The visit was one of three made by the group to local schools, focusing on the Battle of the Somme which took place between July 1 and November 18, 1916. In particular, Alf ’s Fifth Waikato Dragoons looked at the New Zealand Division’s expe-

rience as they went into the line on September 15. “It’s a great way for children to learn about history without being sat in the classroom reading about it. They’re actually out there doing something and generally, when you’re doing something, you learn a lot more,” says Hope School principal, Freya Hogarth. Starting off in the library with an information session, the Dragoons explained some of the facts and figures and gave visual demonstrations so that students could get an idea of the scale of casualties and deaths during the Somme. Heading outside, the school took part in some marching drills before the visit culminat-

I really enjoyed it. It was a good experience. My favourite part was probably learning to march and having all the fights,” says Maia Kininmonth, 11. “I learnt that it was all muddy and that there was tonnes of barbed wire and how dangerous it was. I really liked the flour bombs,” says Preston Holder, 11. Alf ’s Fifth Waikato Dragoons cover many battles throughout history from ancient times, through to the World War’s.

Brightside Community Association’s October meeting was a busy event. Oliver Kearney, the new CEO of Network Tasman addressed the meeting over concerns with trucks turning left from Lord Rutherford Road into Waimea West Road. To improve turning requires moving the existing power pole to allow re-aligning of the corner. This would cost in the order of $110,000 - $200,000 - money which Network Tasman must prioritise according to demand and potential risk Glenys Della Bosca spoke of the work of Neighbourhood Support and the growth the group had experienced in the Waimea district. Since her talk it has been found that the normal funding has not been forthcoming and the group is struggling to remain active. Marty Price, the Waimea Co-ordinator, is on indefinite leave without pay until further notice, requiring two days work to replace this activity and the group desperately need an alternative source of funding.

Neighbourhood Support embodies the community spirit and it would be a retrograde step to see this activity falter. The matter of speed of traffic in Ellis Street and the issue of trucks passing the Brightwater School during starting and finishing times was raised again. These issues have been aired over many years and we have yet to find a solution. The Association will make further representation to TDC for the speed limit on Ellis Street to be reduced to 40kph. Although many may feel this an imposition, trials have shown that it adds a further seven seconds to travel the length of Ellis Street. Meantime, the Brightwater School will carry out surveys of trucks passing the school during starting and finishing times and decide on measures to increase safety for pupils and parents. Progress is being made on the Village Green Car Park. Initial plans have been drawn up and you may have noticed workers taking samples of subsoil recently. Tenders are to be called for the work which must be completed within a four-week period, finishing no later than the end of April, 2017. This, hope-

fully, will help ease the problem of “musical cars” in front of the shops at busy times and provide longer term parking. Progress is being made with the additions to the Anzac Memorial at the Brightwater Community Hall and will be ready for the next Anzac Day service The flower pots in front of the Brightwater shops have been re-painted and replanted by the Brightwater Scouts. This has been a wonderful community project, beautifying the area and giving the Scouts a pride in their community. Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm at the Brightwater School Staffroom, November 7. If you have suggestions to improve our community, problems you can see, feel free to come along and have your say. Brightwater School learn about the battle of the Somme Students from Brightwater School were visited on Monday, October 17, by Alf ’s Fifth Waikato Dragoons. The group used hands on activities including a mock battle with newspaper swords to educate students on the World War 1 battle of the Somme in France. As well as being a lot of fun for the school, it also taught them about the casualties and deaths that were a result of the battle.

Edible Pots for Brightwater Shops An idea has grown from a parent’s desire to provide the Brightwater community with fresh and functional garnishes from a line of pots outside the Brightwater shops. Brightwater Community Association agreed to the replanting, Brightwater Scouts agreed to plant and service the pots and Weathersfield Organic Seedlings jumped on board to provide their locally made potting mix and an array of organic herbs and strawberries. They create a berrilicious taste sensation for the passing school children, as well as an opportunity for local shoppers to

150 year anniversary

A reminder that St Michael’s church, the lovely white wooden church along Waimea West and the one with the funny shaped trees, is celebrating its150th anniversary. The first wooden church opened in 1843, but it later needed substantial repairs so the current church was built, with its foundation stone being laid on November 24, 1866. To celebrate this event there will be a service on Sunday, November 27, at 10am, with the Bishop of Nelson the Right Reverend V. Richard Ellena in attendance.

Brightwater Scouts also wish to acknowledge a donation from ReadyLawn enabling them to repair potholes in the dens lawn, and Place for Plants who donated a lemon tree. The Jamboree 2016 fundraising has gone well and there will be a big thank you to contributors in the New Year. Currently Scouts Brightwater committee is inviting applications for a Group Leader and Treasurer as roles change within the group.

We welcome you to be part of this service to help us celebrate, particularly if you have family connections with St Michael’s or have been married in this lovely church. Following the service there will be a light lunch at Tea Pot Valley Camp. Just a thought... Jon Parkes, Whakatu Presbyterian Church If God is a God of Love, why does God not intervene to stop suffering? That is a question I am often asked, especially around funerals. We all know people whose lives have been cut too short and witnessed families suffer in grief and pain. In fact, one thing all humanity has in common is we all

suffer. So why does God not step in to end suffering? For someone in the middle of suffering it is not the best time to answer such questions due to unhelpful platitudes. For other people though, a helpful question to ask is “if you were God, how would you cease all suffering?” Extrapolate your answer to see if that would work in the real world.

Much of the suffering in the world is caused by humans, the main culprits being greed, lust for power and selfishness. Humans are free agents. We can choose to be selfish or selfless. God never forces anyone to choose to love their neighbour, rather God desires we choose to do so. God desires we be selfless, show compassion and mercy and love for one another. But it is our choice. Ponder the issue of pain. It is not necessarily a bad thing

even if unpleasant. Pain lets us know when something is wrong and is necessary to show us the issue that needs to get fixed. Another aspect of suffering is that some of the deepest human moments come when we allow ourselves to care for someone suffering, the love shown, the words “I love you, thank you for being a good mum, I will miss you when you die”, are some of the deepest and most profound moments we experience. These are not easy

moments but are very precious human moments. God did turn up to deal with suffering. Jesus Christ who is God, taught how to live including how to love one another. He taught ways to end selfishness and therefore end suffering. But he was rejected and killed on a Roman cross. Thankfully, on Easter Sunday he rose from the dead proving lifein-the-next. That gives every human much hope in the suffering they experience.

Jump Jam teams from Henley and Richmond schools had a dress rehearsal for the South Island regional finals in Christchurch this weekend when they performed their dance routines at Richmond School on Friday. Henley and Richmond’s Strictly Jump Jam teams and Richmond’s X-Factor team qualified for the South Island regional final back in August. They were the only two schools in Nelson to qualify for the final and will be taking 27 girls to the aerobicdance event at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday. “We have been practising

Jump Jam section and will complete a standard fiveminute dance that will be assessed by a panel of judges. It is the first time in 10 years that Henley has qualified for the final. Richmond qualified for the Strictly Jump Jam and X-

Factor sections and teacher Sherie Schwass says they are taking 16 girls to Christchurch. Richmond has qualified for last two finals, with its Strictly Jump Jam team finishing fourth and the XFactor team finishing second last year.

Recent ant observations in Nelson have revealed the presence of Argentine ants in large numbers in certain areas. With summer on its way, it is time to start planning what methods to use to control argentine ants. In past years there was really only one option and that was to use bait. If not applied correctly, and if neighbours did not treat at the same time, then control was not of the expected levels for the price paid for the product. The last two seasons have seen the use of a now tried-and-proven method of getting long-term control of argentine ants for a reasonable outlay by the householder. The X-IT Ant™ programme relies on the use of at least two, possibly three, different products to achieve ant control. To get the best result from your X-It Ant application your sprayer must have no spray residue from the previous use of insecticides (e.g. Ripcord®Plus) Best results are achieved when a new sprayer is used and only X-IT Ant is used in it. X-It Ant works by being non-repellent to ants so that when they walk over the dried spray residue they pick up the insecticide on their feet and take it back to the nest where the ants preen each other, and thereby pass the insecticide onto other ants, including the queen. Ant colony control is achieved once the queens are dead. You must know where the ants are for successful treatment, so a full inspection of the

property is required, so check all these places: Sleepers, trees, curb and channelling, driveways, paths, gardens, compost heaps, all fences including the wire or boards, rails and posts, pergolas and plants growing on them. Firewood piles, downpipes, rubbish bins, bbq’s, outdoor furniture, pot plants, vehicles, decks and any trees overhanging the boundary. The best time to look for ants is in the heat of the day when they are most active.

1. X-It Ant™: 225mlpack(OnlyuseOUTDOORS). Spray all ant trails, path edges, driveway edges, curb & channelling, fences including posts, rails, pergola posts, etc. Tree trunks require a minimum 1 metre band up and around them. Bushes / plants that touch the house need to be pruned so that they no longer do so. Spray a 1 metre band up and out all the way around the exterior of the house.

2. Bi Force® Granules: 500g shaker pack

In gardens, long grass, compost, and any areas where X-It Ant™ cannot be applied successfully.

3. Dust 2 Dust™: 100g puffer pack Use for the killing of ants in wall and ceiling cavities, cracks and crevices, under inaccessible decking, under cupboards and into retaining walls. Business Update. Adv.

are the current Ranfurly Shield holders. The two teams have played in Christchurch already this season, with Canterbury winning 45-14. However, the Makos will gain confidence from their semi-final win, which was set-up by two late tries in the first

half to take a 24-12 halftime lead. Makos captain Shane Christie says it was the turning point of the game, along with 21 points from Marty Banks, including a gamewinning try in the last minute. “We finished that first half really well but we came out flat after halftime

and they threw everything at us, and we did bloody well to hang on and show a lot of character when we needed it.” The final will be played at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium on Saturday night with kick-off at 7.35pm.

Jaine beats record and Bennett in tight finish Simon Bloomberg Nelson rider Henry Jaine managed to do what some of the world's best cyclists failed to do this year when he edged out George Bennett in a desperate finish to the NBS Milk and Honey race on Sunday. And Henry broke his own race record in the process, completing the road cycle from Takaka to the top of the Takaka Hill, and mountainbike down the Rameka Track back to Takaka, in just 2hr 33min 40sec. George, who was predictably first to the top of the Takaka Hill and led to the bottom of the Rameka, slipped off the pace in the final kilometre to finish in 2hr 34min 47sec, with top junior Cameron Jones third in 2hr 41min. Henry's win was based on superior mountainbike skills through the technically demanding Rameka Track. However, Henry admitted he was concerned he may have dropped too far off the pace during the tough climb up the Takaka Hill. "I don't know if I'm not fit enough yet or I was just having a bad day but I struggled up the hill. I felt sick, but I knew if I could hold on I'd have a show

"I was fourth or fifth to the top and then I just started picking off the leaders. I caught George at the bottom of the Rameka and from then on it was always going to come down to a sprint." George, who had a great season riding for LottoNL-Jumbo on the world pro tour, admitted the race was a lot tougher than he expected with the change from a road bike to mountainbike proving challenging. "It was hard. I even got cramp

- I haven't had cramp for 10 years." Wellington's Sasha Smith won the women's race riding the entire course on a mountainbike in 3hr 38min 24sec. Alison Mander was second in 3hr 48 min with Mel Chick third in 4hr 5min. Niamh Fisher-Black won the Queen of the Mountain for the first female rider to reach the top of the hill. Patrick Higgins rode a mountainbike the whole way to win the men's Treadly race ahead of Ollie Whalley with Jace Christie third.

Speedway’s fireworks meeting on Saturday Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway is about to light up the sky with its annual Coca-Cola fireworks display on Saturday night. It’s Nelson’s biggest fireworks event of the year and the action on the track promises to be just as competitive as some of the region’s best speedway racers search for silverware. It is the club’s busiest meeting of the year with real family atmosphere ensuring a fantastic night for both young and old.

There is plenty happening racingwise with the Trackman Trophies for midgets and productions taking place. The stockcars have a best pairs event with super stocks vying for the Dave Scott Memorial Trophy. It will pay to be early on Saturday, the road entry by the pits is closed before the meeting but will be open for exiting and there is no parking on the road. People can meet the drivers before and after racing and grab a photo with their favourite driver.

Stoke earn local bragging rights on diamond SpOrtS Jacob Page

Stoke Eagles pitcher Josh Kellly looks for a strike during the Labour Weekend Softball Tournament at Saxton Ballpark. Photo: Evan Barnes Shuttersport.

The Stoke Eagles have gone the better of the two Nelson teams at the annual Labour Weekend softball tournament that finished at the Saxton Field softball diamond on Monday. Stoke and the United Titans were up against seven other teams, the most in the tournament’s history. Stoke got bragging rights over the Titans with a narrow 9-8 win on Saturday. The young team backed that up with a 10-5 win against Halswell Hornets on Sunday. Stoke also beat 2015 champions Albion 2-1 on Monday. The Titans lost their final game to winners Papanui 14-0 on Monday. Stoke Eagles coach Stu Power says his team was competitive against every team, which was the goal. “We’ve pushed teams hard but some errors in the field have hurt us at times.” He praised the offensive production of Gavin Peattie, as well as pitchers Josh Kelly and Riley Power for the heavy workload they’ve handled throughout the three days. “Gavin has been great with scoring runs and in the field, while our young pitchers have performed exceptionally well against some top-class hitters.”

Cycling Waimea College student Michaela Kerr won the under-19 title and finished second in the open women’s section of the Calder Stewart Elite road cycling series after the final race in Canterbury on Sunday. The Mike Greer Homes rider completed the 116km women’s race near Leeston in 3hr 21min. Tasman Wheelers masters rider Warrick Spence was second in the Revolution Criterium in Rolleston on Saturday while Karen Fulton was third. Triathlon The Nelson Triathlon and Multisport Club is holding the first Kiwisport Spring Triathlon of the season at Rabbit Island on Sunday. There will be sprint and shortcourse triathlon and duathlon events with races starting at 10am. Competitors to register from 9am to 9.30am with a race briefing at 9.45am. Adventure racing Nelson adventure racers Nathan Fa’avae, Dan Busch and Brent Edwards are preparing for the world champs in Australia starting on November 8. Nathan’s Seagate team is ranked No1 for the eight-day, 600km team’s race through Shoalhaven in New South Wales. Brent and Dan are members of Team Yealands. US scholarship for swimmer C Jacob Page Tasman swimmer Caitlin Delany has had a fortnight she’ll never forget and now has an American college journey to plan. The 18-year-old won a national title in the open women’s 200m breaststroke at the New Zealand Short Course Championships in Auckland earlier this month. She also claimed two age-group titles as well as a silver at the same meeting and was named winner of the Glue Family Cup for Greatest Achievement in Sport at the Waimea College Sports Awards. Last week, she also verbally agreed to a swimming scholarship at San Diego State University. Caitlin describes 2016 as a breakthrough year. “It’s all down to the training

that has paid off.... good coaching and putting in the effort. Those nine pool sessions, a weight and a dry-land session each week has helped mould her from someone who swam for fitness at 13 years old into a champion. “I remember training for fitness and I played a lot of other sports and then we got a new coach and he told us we’d be swimming competitively and I ended up really enjoying it.” A promising netball defender, Caitlin realised she had to make a choice and chose the individualised sport of swimming over a team environment. “I like how the results come down to your hard work. “I was quite heavily freestyle and then I decided I wanted to try other strokes so I gave breaststroke a try and the more I did it the more it clicked.” She says taking the top award

at the Waimea College Sports Awards was amazing recognition both for her and her sport. She says agreeing to go to an NCAA Division One swimming college is an exciting prospect. “I know they have amazing coaches and a great team and I know they’ll be competitive within their conference.” Caitlin had three other colleges keen for her swimming talent on their campus. She will study business and commerce. The former Brightwater Primary School and Waimea Intermediate school pupil moved with her family to Richmond to be closer to the pool where she trains. She says her family and coach Andy Adair have been hugely instrumental in her success and she is very appreciative of Tasman swimmer Caitlin Delany has agreed to a swimming scholarship to San Diego State University after a breakthrough season. Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning is spanning the globe in an effort to benefit the NBL franchise next year. Since the Giants season ended in April, the 32-year-old Oakland, California, native has been to Las Vegas for an NBA Showcase camp for free agent players, attended the Philadelphia 76ers NBA training camp, spent time in Madrid, and is currently “watching as much basketball as possible” while in Israel working with Maccabi Tel Aviv. “I’m trying to make use of not having a partner or kids and see as much basketball, and learn as much as I can, while I’m young.” Tim says one of his major focuses while away has been looking at defensive systems as he pin-pointed defence as an area where the Giants struggled in 2016. He says the signing of former Wellington Saint Dion Prewster was a step to solving the issue. “We spoke to our guys at the end of the season about guys they felt were hard to match up against and (Dion’s) name came up quite a bit."

Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning has been all around the world in preparation for the 2017 National Basketball League season. Photo: Evan Barnes Shuttersport. The coach, who will look to return to Nelson in midJanuary for his third season in charge, believes he has the right mix of Nelson-based players and newcomers from outside the region. “The secret to the franchise in Nelson is that we give opportunities to up-and-coming players from the region. “We thought Finn [Delany] would have a big year for us and he did, and he’s going to

be a great guy to have back after he finishes with the Breakers. You know you’re going to get a better player back with him because he’s so mentally tough like that.” The Giants will also be looking for two new import players. “I already know the guard I am going to sign but it’s a case of finding one more player, probably in the backcourt.” There will also be no pres-

ence from Giants legend Phill Jones, who retired last season. Phill is helping behind the scenes in the lead-up to the season but has hinted at wanting to keep a low profile and enjoy time with his family. “Given the amount of experience Phill has, I’d be silly not to at least have him available for advice throughout the season,” Tim says. “I’m keen to come back and do the best I can for the Giants.”

Nelson senior cricket got underway on Saturday for the season with Waimea Toi Toi and Stoke Nayland picking up victories. Dylan Eginton’s 73 was enough to get StokeNayland to 144 all out before they restricted Nelson College to just 92 all out thanks to 4 for 17 from captain Ryan Edwards. At Victory Square, WTTU opener Stephen Binnie made 68 to help his team to 211 all out. In response, Wakatu could only manage 131 all out. Tasman debut with draw

Henry’s

to

Jacob Page Tasman United coach Richard Anderson believes his team needed a spark and Alex Ridsdale provided it with a 25m strike during the team's 2-2 Stirling Sports Premiership draw with Canterbury United on Sunday afternoon. Pine Industries Tasman United had dominated the first 40 minutes but found themselves a goal behind thanks to a scrappy goal from Andre de Jong in the 41st minute. "I thought we played well and controlled the play up until then," Richard says. "We needed something special and Alex provided it with a strike that showed real confidence. Tasman trailed again after they conceded a penalty in the 68th minute but Paul Ifill cancelled that out with a well taken penalty of his own in the 81st minute. "I think we showed plenty of courage to come back like we did. "To get this result against the team that finished fourth last year will give us a lot of confidence for our game against Auckland [this week]," Richard says.

Events for motorcyclists

Closure – Moturoa/Rabbit Island and Rough Island

Friday 18 November – Brittany Morrow Come along to the Waimea Club from 6pm and hear what Brittany has to say about wearing “All the gear. All the time”. She will tell her story about how an unlocked helmet visor flipped up at speed and dragged her off the back of a friend’s bike in 2005. The helmet saved her life, but a complete lack of protective gear meant that her life changed forever. She has become the Queen of Road Rash – www.rockthegear.org. Hot drinks and snacks provided. Saturday 19 November – Dave Moss Dave will be at Speights Ale House from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. Dave’s mission is to ensure that every motorcyclist gets the fundamental information needed to understand the basics of their own motorcycle’s suspension. With that information all can begin to understand why setting up a motorcycle chassis and suspension is critical to rider safety for every motorcycle produced. Check out Dave’s website – www.feelthetrack.com. No registrations are needed for either event. For further information please contact Krista Ph. 03 543 8551 or krista.hobday@tasman.govt.nz.

To allow harvesting operations to take place, the following closures and notices are in effect on Rough Island.

A ban on Salisbury Road will come into force in November. There will also be new short-term parking spaces (2 minutes) outside Waimea College and Waimea Intermediate to make it easier for parents to drop-off/pick-up their children without driving into the school grounds.

River weed control season starting 2016/17 To control woody weeds and riparian pest plants growing along our rivers, we operate a spraying programme November to April. We target broom, gorse, buddleia and wilding willows that, if left, will block river channels over time. Due to regular spraying since 2012 there are only relatively small areas within flood channels to control this season, so efforts will be focused on controlling pest vines in selected riparian areas (species such as old man’s beard and chocolate vine). Areas to be targeted for this work include the Waimea and Wai-iti Rivers, the Sherry and Motupiko Rivers in the upper Motueka catchment, and the Lower Motueka near the township. Techniques will include backpack spraying, motorised pressure sprayers and cutting and painting as appropriate. If a river adjoining your property is to be sprayed, a contractor will contact you.

Get your summer event licence sorted Are you planning a one-off summer event that includes the sale of alcohol? If so, you will need to apply for a special licence. A special licence will allow you to sell alcohol at a one-off occasion or event, such as a food and wine festival or a quiz night. Licensed premises can also apply for a one-off extension to their hours or area for a special occasion or event. If your event will be held between 20 December 2016 and 7 February 2017, you need to apply for your special license by 22 November 2016. You can find out more about special licences and download an application form at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/special-licence.

Summer sport codes sport NZ rural travel fund Are you a Tasman rural based club or do you have rural based players? If so, the Tasman Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund can help meet your travel costs. Sport NZ Travel Fund reduces the barriers for young people (aged 5 – 19 years) taking part in local sports competition by offering grants to subsidise travel costs. The clubs must apply on behalf of players and the next closing date is 31 October. Application forms and further information is online at www.tasman.govt.nz/council/grants-funding or contact Mike Tasman-Jones on Ph. 543 8403 for further information.

Spooners Tunnel update The recent wet weather has slowed up repairs at Spooners Tunnel. The unique requirements of the site means work cannot proceed during or immediately after rain. At this stage, the earliest the tunnel will be open is the first week in November. Thanks must go to Nelson Forests Limited who have taken the opportunity to bring forward harvesting in the area during the tunnel closure period to avoid an additional future closure of the trail, which passes through their forest.

Short-term chlorination for Richmond’s water To safeguard Richmond’s water supply while major supply pipeline work takes place, chlorine will be introduced into the water between 4 and 7 November. This is a temporary measure. Once the work is finished and the bacteria risk is gone, we will stop chlorination and the water will continue to undergo ultraviolet (UV) treatment as usual. Will my water be affected? The Richmond water supply covers the Wakatu Industrial estate and ENZA in the north, residential houses on the northern side of Champion Road (in the Nelson City Council area but serviced by Tasman District Council water supply) and all of urban Richmond, including the Beach Road area and as far south as Haycock Road. If you live in this area you will receive chlorinated water for this time. I don’t like the taste of chlorine – what can I do? We suggest you fill clean bottles with water before 4 November and store them somewhere cool and dark in order to have unchlorinated water for drinking during this period. Alternatively, you can leave chlorinated water out in an open-topped container for several hours, then chill it, to reduce the taste of chlorine. How long before the taste returns to normal? It may take a few days after chlorination stops for the taste and odour of chlorine to disappear completely. I have pet fish – can I top up their water? If you have pet fish, don’t forget to de-chlorinate the water first before topping up their tank or set aside some non-chlorinated water before 4 November. You can de-chlorinate by using a specialist chemical you can buy from most pet shops.

ROADING Road closures The following roads are to be closed to ordinary vehicles for the periods and times indicated below. Applicant: Westland Car Club Location of road closure: Matakitaki Road – 500m before property 933 to 500m past Mailman Creek Bridge Date of road closure: Saturday 3 December, 10.00 am – 7.00 pm Date objections close: 5 November 2016

PROUD TO SHOW YOU OUR FANTASTIC NEW PRODUCTS

NEW IN - ARCAM!

STARTING FROM

1699

$

The Audiophile is now the new ARCAM dealer for the Top of the South. Come in now for a demo! FMJ Series - The A19 and CDS27 are both part of ARCAM’s Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) product line. The name comes from the fact that the units are made of steel and aluminium. The look and feel of these ARCAM products is understated but well put together. The black chassis are certainly not flashy or drenched in knobs and lights. “Elegant” and “functional” are words that come to mind.

Pair the ARCAM A19 integrated amp with the CDS27 SACD/CD player with network streaming to maximise the performance of this next generation player.
