Frustration grows over ‘unrealistic’ wage Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Pak’nSave workers who are fighting for a living wage and additional sick days are unhappy with the
lack of bargaining by Pak’nSave Richmond owner Andrew Howard and say that the offers that they are getting are ‘unrealistic’ compared to the industry. After working throughout lockdown as essential workers, staff
from the Richmond Supermarket are lobbying for essential pay and a living wage. FIRST Union organiser Ross Lampert says that the offer was ‘predictably disappointing.’ “They did come up a little bit, but
it’s still not in the realm of reality,” Ross says. “Their offer is below what is really going on out there, with Countdown going up to a living wage – their offer is significantly below that.”
“It’s not realistic that workers at Pak‘nSave should be paid far less than workers at Countdown,” Ross says, especially when a Countdown supermarket is in

$50,000 worth of prizes received for charity auction FRoM PAGE 1 the Nelson/Tasman area. Local businesses have swung their support behind the event, amassing prize donations to the value of $50,000. Current statistics demonstrate that the charity chosen by the Nelson College students is deserving of funds and that youth suicide is not going away while it remains a taboo subject. Between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020, 24 people committed suicide in the Top of the South. This is the highest number in five years, a climb of 20 per cent despite the national rate falling to its lowest in three years. “The generosity keeps coming and it keeps surprising me every time, it’s actually very humbling,” says auction organiser Steve Page, “Going out and asking people for donations is not always an easy
task, and certainly not in the current climate,” says Steve. Trend Kitchens are the auction’s lead sponsor who has donated the design and installation of a top-of-the-line, kitchen fit-out worth up to $20,000. The prize value equates to the equivalent of the type of kitchen you’d find in a brand-new 3-bedroom home. “It was a privilege to be asked to support this cause and I’m proud to be able to support a charity that is as deserving as this,” says Trends Kitchens Nelson branch manager, Grant MacPherson. Other impressive donations include a one-day hunting trip to Glazebrook Station, Blenheim, with airlift by Helicopters Nelson from Brightwater over to the hunting lodge and back. Another is the latest Shimano 9000S electric package, fishing rod, reel and braid from Hunting and Fishing

Frustration grows over wage offer from PAGE 1 the works just minutes up the road from Pak’nSave Richmond. A building consent application was lodged with the Tasman District Council for a Countdown supermarket on the corner of Champion Road and Salisbury Road in May this year. Rachel Boyack, Labour Candidate for Nelson and former FIRST Union organiser, was the union organiser for Pak’nSave Richmond when bargaining began in 2015. In recent months she has lobbied owner Andrew Howard to come to the bargaining table. “An employer dragging their heels for 5 years is unusual,” Rachel says. “The offer on the table from the employer still doesn’t meet what should be a fair rate for essential workers who are putting themselves on the front line. These are skilled workers.” “During the Covid-19 lockdown the public recognised the essential role of supermarket workers.” Pak’Save Richmond’s parent company, Foodstuffs South Island, states on their website that: “Corporate social responsibility is central to our approach to business, from board level to checkout. lective agreement.” “We reached out to them in February and March offering to attend mediation which they declined. We are perplexed as to why they would decline, but we remain open to mediation and are respectful of the process which we don’t believe should be done via the media,” Andrew said. But Ross says that workers have been faced with endless delays. “The company did request mediation, but we thought we could achieve a collective agreement. There was every indication that they were interested in settling, but then Covid hit. When we finally were able to meet again, they hadn’t made movement on their offer.” “In terms of the media, he personally won’t meet with us, so how else can we talk to him?”

Proposed new school may not go ahead Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Ministry of Education have three options on the table regarding how to meet demands as the student numbers in the Tasman area continue to grow. “We have secured a site for a new primary school in Richmond West. At this stage, the details of the site and its purchase are commercially sensitive,” says Ministry of Education deputy secretary, sector enablement and support, Katrina Casey. “I don’t think a primary school is what’s necessary at Berryfields, some other school like a middle school would be better,” says Richmond Primary School principal, Tim Brenton. Tim is concerned that people are not aware of the Ministry’s projected figures which demonstrate why consideration should be given to schools other than primary. In July 2019, the primary school numbers for the region were 1,799 and the numbers projected for 2048 are 2,970. The projected figures for Waimea Intermediate are 1165 in 2048 and for Waimea College, 3046 students in 2048. “Many parents of children at Richmond School are already telling me that both Waimea Intermediate and College are too big and want to see other schools for that age range to be built,” says Tim.

Tim has been involved in the working party formed by the Ministry a year ago. It’s aim to investigate the possibility of the Ministry purchasing land in the Berryfields area specific to building a new school. “We can’t be short sighted on this; we
need to look at a 30-year type plan,” says Tim, “and there are more options than the three the Ministry are proposing.” Nelson MP Nick Smith is keen to see a new primary school being built within the Richmond West development, Ber-
Nelson Matters
National announced tough new border policies last week. https:// www.national.org.nz/securingour-border. This is what is needed to stop further incursions of Covid and prevent the huge consequential disruption and economic damage. New Zealand has a huge natural advantage in this pandemic as the most geographically-isolated country in the world. The problem is we keep squandering this with sloppy border management. We were slow to close our borders in February. It was a mistake to allow tourists to continue to enter New Zealand in March on the basis they would self-isolate. I had numerous Nelson reports of these
requirements being blatantly ignored. I also had reports from dozens of Nelsonians returning to New Zealand earlier this year appalled at the lax controls on re- entry compared to other countries. These failings contributed to our first wave of Covid requiring the six week lockdown but were forgivable given this novel virus and unprecedented challenge. I was proud as to how Nelson and New Zealand responded. We limited the death toll from Covid to 22 and by May had us free of the virus. It was plain by April that extensive testing was pivotal to containing this disease. The World Health Organisation refrain was Test, Test,
and Test. Ministers assured New Zealand in June everybody crossing the border would be tested on day 3 and day 12 of their isolation. It is scandalous that 70% were not, triggering the resignation of Health Minister David Clark. The new Health Minister Chris Hipkins assured us all border and isolation staff would be regularly tested. We found out last week that 63% were never tested. Many requested it but were refused. Experts say this is the most likely cause of NZ’s second wave of Covid. The consequence has cost billions with our largest city having to be closed down. Many businesses have failed and thousands of jobs lost. The
ryfields, in Lower Queen Street and is gathering signatures for a petition in support of this. “Our roll at Waimea Intermediate is currently stable at 625 students,” says Waimea Intermediate acting principal Janine Higgins. Further to this, Janine says that Waimea Intermediate will work with and adapt to whatever decisions are made by the Ministry of Education. She states that it’s a decision for the Ministry of Education and that Waimea Intermediate need to trust the Ministry will make sound decisions based on data and the consultation process. There will be a survey open to all those interested and suggestions from the community will also be considered. A further meeting is scheduled for early September. At this time, no date has been set for when the Ministry will make a final decision. The Ministry says that should a new school be required or if there needs to be changes to the year levels of the current schools then a period of formal consultation will be required under the Education Act and require a Ministerial decision. A new school at Richmond West is one of the three Ministry’s options discussed at a community engagement meeting held in Brightwater recently. This option is open to whether the school will incorporate years 1 – 6 or year 1 – 8 and means the adjustment of numbers at some of the outlying schools such as Appleby and Brightwater. Another option is to leave things as they are until the area’s primary schools, Waimea Intermediate and Waimea College have grown enough that it generates a demand. The last option would be to relocate Ranzau School into new school facilities in Richmond West for Year 1-6 or Year 1-8; with the same adjustment of numbers to the outlying schools and Waimea College, as stated in the first option of a new school.

Government got complacent. Testing dropped to just six one day, nationwide, prior to the second wave of infection. National proposes six changes to fix our border controls. We will Covid test every traveller before entering New Zealand. The Government says this breaches returning New Zealanders’ human rights. Tough times require tough measures. It is more reasonable to infringe these travellers’ rights by testing them, than the rights and jobs of millions affected by re-incursions and lockdowns. Nor is it in these people or other passengers’ interests to be flying while they have Covid. National will create a single bor-
der control agency to address the muddled approach from multiple Ministers and agencies. We will regularly test all border and isolation facility staff. We will also make contact tracing technology compulsory for anyone who treats or tests Covid patients. We will also widen the availability of Covid testing and establish a maximum waiting time of 60 minutes. We will also invest in Bluetooth technology of the sort developed by Nelson entrepreneur Sam Morgan. National’s policy is about multiple lines of defence. Yo – yoing in and out of lockdown is not sustainable. Tough times call for tough border measures. Advt.

High hopes as local cannabis company raises $1m Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A Nelson-based medical cannabis company has high hopes after raising more than $1,176,178 through crowd-funding and landing a $90 million supply deal, despite not having grown any plants yet. The company, chaired by former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, announced last year that it had been granted a cultivation licence by the Ministry of Health, and that a site had been found for a cultivation facility in Brightwater. Plans to break the ground on the research and cultivation facility in Brightwater for mid-2020 have been pushed to 2022, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Essentially, we had an investor lined up for the Brightwater facility, but through Covid his businesses interests took a hit and he got nervous around investing. It happens,” says Aldo. Despite issues with investors, the company is still moving forward with a retrofit facility in Christchurch, which will enable the company to start fulfilling existing orders, and hopefully give investors confidence that the business model works. Despite not having a single plant in the ground, over $1m has been raised through crowdfunding, with hopes of reaching $2m.
Major water leak causes frustration on Gladstone Road
Former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says Covid-19 delayed some of his medical cannabis company’s plans to dominate the local market. Photo: Supplied. It has also signed an agreement to supply Australian company Hektares with $30m of medicinal cannabis next year and a further $60m worth in 2022. The retrofit facility in Christchurch will still be a small operation in comparison and be able to produce 6 tonnes of dried cannabis annually, compared to the 30 tonnes that the Brightwater facility will be able to produce. Aldo says that he hopes to have the Christchurch facility underway by the end of September, with plants in the ground by the end of October. “My New Year’s resolution was to make sure we had some plants growing in 2020. Covid
came along, but we’ll get there, and hopefully start harvesting in
Aldo Miccio early February and get some of those orders fulfilled,” he says. Aldo says that they expect more
investors to come on board once the smaller scale Christchurch facility gets going. “Doing the retrofit first gives us a bit more security for investors and shows that we have a proven model on a small scale – that is lacking in the industry. We want to be one of the first to have a harvest in the country.” Aldo predicts that around 200 new jobs will be created once the Brightwater facility gets up and running. The Government legalised medicinal cannabis in December 2018 and passed regulations that enabled the scheme in December 2019. A referendum will take place this year around recreational use.
Contractors dealt with a major water leak on Gladstone Road in Richmond on Friday last week. Contractors were called around 9am to attend to the leak, which affected surrounding streets and shut water down around Richmond. A water tanker was on standby for residents who were out of water. The water was off while contractors worked to fix the leak, and residents reported that water in the area came back on shortly before 3pm. Residents noted on Facebook that a similar leak happened in the area earier this month.
Richmond shops and Mall affected by Chorus Internet outage
A Chorus outage meant that internet in central Richmond, including the Richmond Mall, was down on Friday. The Richmond Mall reported that internet went down at around 4:45pm on Friday afternoon last week, and that their retailers were without internet for some time.. A spokesperson for Chorus confirmed the outage and said that the internet was down for around 45 minutes while contractors fixed the problem.

Airport head steps down Staff Reporter
Trees and power lines don’t mix Trees and vegetation can cause power cuts. That’s why it is important to manage them so that they don’t grow too close to power lines.
Our vegetation team surveys the network regularly, checking for trees and other vegetation that is a risk to the power lines. Before you plant anything near power lines, consider how big it will grow. We send ‘cut and trim’ (CT) notices to property owners where we find any trees growing too close to our power lines. We are required to do this by law under the Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. If you receive a CT notice you can choose to have the trees trimmed or felled. The Regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim. We keep a database of each surveyed site so if you are eligible for a free trim, our tree contractor will cut the tree back to a safe distance from the lines. You are then responsible for keeping the tree trimmed in the future so that it doesn’t grow too close again. Trees notified to you in a CT notice must only be cut by a network certified arborist. They have specific training and the necessary insulated tools to safely cut trees close to power lines. Our vegetation surveyors also look for trees that are a high risk to the power lines – these include trees that are diseased, or have damaged trunks/broken branches that could fall onto the power lines. Owners of these trees will be contacted by our surveyors to discuss their options. Surveying our power lines and working with tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages caused by trees. We appreciate the effort that tree owners are making to keep their trees clear of the power lines, your neighbours will too! If you have any questions please contact our vegetation team on 0800 508 098 or email trees@networktasman.co.nz

The CEO of Nelson Airport, Rob Evans, has announced his resignation after five years in the job. Airport chairman Paul Steere says Rob achieved great success with the management of passenger growth, the strong leadership shown in the building of the new terminal, and his dealing with the Covid-19 challenge. He says that that challenge has made Rob assess his future career path and he is now looking for new challenges. “We wish him well and thank him for the significant commercial contribution made under his stewardship.” Paul says Nelson Airport has achieved substantial success over the last five and a half years, culminating in the completion of the award-winning terminal development. “Along the way many new relationships have been developed and the airport reached 1 million passengers in 2019.” Rob says it’s been a privilege and an honour to have led Nelson Airport through an “ex-

Work progresses at Kohatu Park Work at the much-anticipated Kohatu Park is progressing, while membership to its incorporated society has been made free of charge. The motorsport and adventure park development is located just east of Motueka Valley Highway with plans including a 3.5km car racing track, a rally circuit, drag racing strip and karting track. The Olivers Rd junction upgrade was completed in December 2019 and work on widening and upgrading the access road into the park commenced in July. The Kohatu Park board also made associate membership
totally free, so that as many people as possible can keep up with the progress. The Nelson Offroad Racing Club has been holding clubonly practice sessions for over a year at the park, and last year the Nelson Car Club carved out an autocross track of over 1.4 km, on which club members are now competing each month. Talks are ongoing with the Nelson Motorcycle Club with the aim of achieving similar results for their members, and discussions with other local motorsport clubs are also taking place. Nearly half of the 500-acre site
has been allocated to non-motorised activities. “We want to provide space and facilities to appeal to all sectors of the Nelson Tasman population,” says Kohatu Park chairman, Garry Adcock. “Cyclo-cross, mountain bikes, orienteering, clay pigeon shooting, remote control vehicles and drones are among the possibilities that we are looking at.” An open day may be held later this year, once work has progressed further, to show members of the public around the new park. Dear Staff In reading the article about Pak’nSave in the latest issue of Waimea Weekly I am left with the impression that Pak’nSave doesn’t particularly value its staff, but rather takes them forgranted. This is all the more noticeable when another grocery chain makes a point of seeing that its staff are fairly treated and appreciated. In this day and age surely staff should receive a living wage, recognition of long service and adequate sick leave. Pak’nSave prides itself on having the lowest prices. I hope these are not at the expense of its staff. Whenua Iti inspires leadership in students Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Four Waimea College students joined students from other colleges from around the region to be part of a new programme delivered by Whenua Iti Outdoors to help students push themselves, and assist their leadership abilities to rise to the surface. “You learn more about who you are as a person and what type of leader you can be,” says student Ella Calder. The three-day course which took place at the Whenua Iti Outdoor’s grounds in Lower Moutere, and for one day at the Abel Tasman National Park, hosts students chosen by the schools whom they believe will benefit the most. “We looked at our year 12 board of students for those kids who don’t always get a chance to shine, the chance to take a lead,” says Waimea College dean Jan Wilson. “We wanted it to be the students who don’t necessarily push themselves, who don’t have the confidence they’ll learn how to lead and achieve something for themselves,” says Waimea College dean Andy McHaffie. The funding for the programme was provided by the Tasman District and Nelson Councils specifi-

Whenua Iti Outdoors, Mark Bruce-Miller. The course focused on the development of key skills to enable students to feel confident and inspired to take up future leadership positions. It uses fun adventure-based learning games like a high rope course which ma-
noeuvres the students out of their comfort zone. “You have to have some trust in yourself and not rely on others,” says student Eden Kett. The course provided first time moments, not only for the students but for the organisation itself.
This was the first time the programme had been run at Whenua Iti Outdoors and, based on feedback from the Waimea College students, it was a successful event. The students had praise for the friendliness of the staff and how organised the programme was. “We learnt skills that we can apply to different situations, things like needing to listen to others, everyone has good ideas, you just need to listen,” says student Zac Last-Harris. And from Whenua Iti Outdoors point of view, the students did well too, and not only because they’d given up the final week of their school holidays to do the course. “I was exceptionally proud of every single student as they willingly challenged themselves and then exceeded their first expectations,” says Whenua Iti instructor Joni Tomsett. Although nobody can ever remember everything they’ve learnt on a three-day course, it’s the most important things to them individually that the four students will remember and take forward after year 12. “The students really appreciated being selected in the first place and the chance to learn how to lead,” says Jan.

Huge uptake on E-book use Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The use of online and electronic resources like e-books and audiobooks has surged in the Tasman region this year, due in part to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, with library members turning to online resources when visiting the library wasn’t possible throughout Alert Levels 3 and 4. While data shows that inperson visits to the libraries in Tasman have gone down due to the lockdown restrictions, the library has seen a huge uptake from users in online resources. The Tasman District Libraries saw a decrease in library visits in the year 2019-2020 – the library estimates that visits will be reduced by around 117,000 due to the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions. But the library being closed didn’t mean people put their books down.
The library has built up an extensive collective of online resources in the past few years, with 17,388 e-books and audiobooks available by the end of June 2020. The 2019/2020 year saw an increase of 41.5 percent in usage of e-book and audiobooks, totalling 39,327. Loans of these online resources made up 7.7% of the libraries total issues in the year. “Interestingly, there was a significant surge in issues of ebooks and e-audio during the period the library was closed from March to May due to Covid-19 levels 3 and 4,” says Richmond Library collections manager Justine Lester. Justine says that there were many first-time users of online resources like e-books and audiobooks. “The feedback we received showed that our library users were extremely grateful to still be able to read, issue new books, and listen to e-audio, even though the library buildings were closed.”

The lockdown may have altered the way that members of the public think about library resources. “They [library users] now understand that our physical books are just one part of the huge amount of resources we offer,” Justine says. Despite restrictions being eased, borrowing levels for online resources like e-books are still higher than the same time last year. “Which indicates that those new users are continuing to borrow e-material,” Justine says.

Waimea Weekly Locally Owned and Operated
The Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Vaping Amendment Bill was passed on 5 August and will come into effect this November. It will see a ban on the sale of vaping products to those under the age of 18. It will also prohibit advertising and limit the sale of all flavours to specialist stores, with shops like dairies, supermarkets and petrol stations restricted to mint, menthol and tobacco. Waimea College principal Scott Haines says that he has been concerned about the lack of regulation around vaping for some time. “I have particularly been concerned with the targeting of minors, especially when it comes to targeted flavours aimed at minors.” Scott says that while there is some research to indicate that Vaping is a safer alternative to smoking, it is still clear that it is not safe for young people. “I certainly support the legislation. In my view it is far too easy for young people to access.” Scott says while vaping isn’t a significant issue for the school, it is a growing area. “It’s something we encounter periodically. But a few years ago this wasn’t an issue at all, so it is a growing issue.” Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson welcomes the changes, saying he has taken a “very hard line” against anyone vaping on school grounds. “Several students have been stood down from school for vaping this year. The incidents I am aware of have been across all year levels, which is a concern.” He says they have seen a rise from virtually no instances of vaping a couple of years ago to seeing it as a growing concern over the past 18 months.
Nelson secondary school principals have welcomed the Government’s new vaping law. Waimea College principal Scott Haines says that while vaping isn’t a huge issue for the school, it’s good to have restrictions. Photo: Matt McCrorie. “Personally, I believe that the risks of vaping, although widely reported to be less than traditional smoking, are still not fully understood. We welcome any move to restrict these products and particularly the flavours and advertising clearly targeted at young people.” Nelson College headmaster Richard Dykes also supports the new regulations but says there is still work to do. “It’s a step in the right direction - it mainly closes the gap and has certainly placed logical restrictions, but it doesn’t go as far as I’d have liked.” He says they are working with multiple students who are vaping, with some reaching out to the NMDHB’s health promotion service for information. “We patrol the school grounds - it’s like going back to the 1980s, chasing smokers across the school yard.” Gayle Hay, Smokefree Health Promoter at Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service
runs these information evenings, and says they encourage parents to talk and connect with their kids regularly. “They also offer the opportunity to plan alongside other parents on how to have these conversations and hear their common experiences.” She says she is happy to see the new laws will come into effect soon. “The bill presents some first great steps taken to support both those wanting to become smoke-free and protect young people from starting to vape. There is more work still to be done to de-normalise smoking and vaping. Our young people copy what they see, and vaping should always only be seen as a quit-smoking tool.” The new law will also ban vaping in cars with children, enable all retailers to display products in-store and allow speciality stores to continue offering loyalty points and discounts.

Garin student in NZ’s Rockquest top 10 Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A Garin College student has wowed national judges with his unique entry into this year’s Smokefreerockquest. Zac Griffith, 15, who placed in the top three for the regional competition, was placed highlycommended in the national competition this year for his unique country music style and original songs. This year, due to Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the usual weekend of high-school bands rocking it out on stage was replaced by video entries, with students recording themselves performing and sending videos to judges to be placed. Tapawera local Zac, who sings and plays guitar, placed in the Nelson regional competition with his original song ‘When tracks had trains’ which he wrote about the old railway lines in the Top of the South. His first time entering rockquest, Zac was nervous that his country style might not fly.
Zac Griffith impressed judges in the rockquest nationals with his unique country style and original songs. Photo: Matt McCrorie. “I had to write two more songs for the national competition, it took me by surprise,” Zac says. “Zac is one of those amazing young people who is a song writ-
ing machine. It wasn’t like starting from scratch,” says music teacher Kathryn Hunt. “He was very reluctant to enter as a country boy, he didn’t feel it was

academy in Australia in 2018 on a scholarship. “That’s when I started songwriting.” An experienced performer, Zac first got into country music when he was seven years old. “I watched the Johnny Cash movie ‘Walk the line’ when I was seven, and then we went to the pub in Tapawera with my family one night, and I got up and sang ‘Ring of Fire,’ and I’ve been hooked ever since.” “I didn’t think Rockquest would be the right fit for my country music, but obviously it was,” Zac says of his win. Zac says that the depth of the lyrics in country music has always been what has attracted him to the genre. “There’s something about the depth of the lyrics which you don’t get in any other style of music,” he says. “Zac’s style wasn’t like anything I’d seen at rockquest, and I thought that would be a good thing,” says Kathryn, who encouraged Zac to enter. Property Management Ltd | “He’s going to win next year, no doubt,” says Kathryn.

Countdown on forEngineSnowden’s Bush Trust Capacity 30.1cc Matt McCrorie The countdown is on for members of the Brightwater community who are trying to save part of Snowden’s Bush, with just four months to raise another $145,000. The Snowden’s Bush trust was formed last year to purchase the frontage of Snowden’s Bush along Waimea West Road from the Anglican Church and add it to the reserve. Work began in mid-2018, when a group of residents came together to save the land. The group is aiming to raise $350,000 and has so far reached $205,000, both from raised and committed funds. While the group has made progress, the Coivd-19 pandemic meant that their efforts were brought to a standstill.

Now members of the trust are calling on the community to support their final push towards the finish line as their deadline looms. “The Covid-19 pandemic has created a challenging fundraising environment,” says trust member Jerry Cameron. Jerry says that the Anglican Diocese, which is selling the land, was happy to extend the deadline to allow the trust more time to fundraise. “The TDC is also pleased to extend their commitment to Jerry Cameron and Janice Gibbs at Snowden’s Bush. Brightwater starts to form again
Matt Stuart Chairperson bgwCa Hi all, as we near the completion of the Brightwater street upgrade we will see it come together in a good way. We have made some changes to allow for the Brightwater Four square parking to be on a angle to allow a little more room to reverse out onto the main road. (The way they used to be) Currently the power poles running up Ellis street are about to be taken down to make the street look and feel less cluttered, as the lines are going underground. Footpaths are wide and very good as shared walking and biking, I have seen many people start to use this. Over the month of July we had a few crime incidents and we are thankful the cameras are in place
and working. They have gone a long way to help the police solve some of the issues we have seen in the district. Once again, huge thanks to all who have supported this so far, we are still open to donations for stage two. As a Brightwater member I would like to thank the Brightwater church for the wonderful job they are doing helping the families in need with food packages, and even firewood free of charge for those requiring same. As a community we need to look after one another so this has been a great help for many. The Brightwater community association has welcomed some new members so please, all feel welcome to come and join in and have your say about future Brightwater projects, and meet with other likeminded people. New members are welcome.

Charles Tyrrell QSO Very Reverend This column will be both my first and last contribution to Just a thought! For the last 18 months or so, I have had the real privilege of caring for the Anglican parish of Wakefield and surrounding districts. The patch I have been covering goes from Wakefield to Tapawera and on to Murchison. After 16 years of leading the ministry at Nelson Cathedral, it has been wonderful to work in a rural setting, with good, honest and very friendly folk. The new vicar for Wakefield and the surrounding districts, the Reverend Don Moses, along with his wife Lynda, will officially begin their new roles in mid September. One of the real joys of my time in the Wakefield area, was to join the Waimea Ministers’ Association and to meet regularly with other ministers and representatives of different churches. This association is one of the best I have ever attended. The churches in this area are committed to each other and annually sign a charter that underpins all we do and are.
Our discussions are wide ranging and our care for all

“
the people of Richmond and Waimea is very evident. Anyone reading this who is
considering joining a local church, should do so with great confidence. In all of our churches in the Richmond and Waimea area, you will find a warm welcome, a friendly worshipping atmosphere (what we Christians call fellowship), inspiring worship and teaching, and confidence that our faith in God is sincere and open. St John’s Church in Wakefield is the oldest wooden church in the South Island. It is possibly the oldest church in the country where there is still weekly worship. Just down Edward Street, there is the new purposebuilt Worship Centre. Like all the churches of our association, we cater for traditional and contemporary worship. God does not stand still and neither should the church. Nationally and internationally, the church has been rocked by growing secularism and in some places, differing scandals. Never forget that Jesus is the ‘sure foundation’ of the Church, and nothing can harm us or distract us from our core business, which is to ‘Worship God and to love God for ever.’

Tania Huddart from Hearts and Bones Pilates and Jaimee McDonald from JM Pilates are a team of two highly knowledgeable and experienced individuals who share a passion for Pilates and their customers’ wellbeing. Together they provide the benefits of Pilates with the specially designed, spring-assisted machines to help customers to improve the way they move. They’ll also help customers to understand how these movements relate to everyday actions and teach how to make those actions work for, rather than against the individual. Their knowledge is about understanding how the body moves in space. Meaning it is about moving more of you, more often. Tania and Jaimee believe that the real value in attending Pilates is what you do in your everyday life. You have so many movement opportunities every day. You don’t need to find that perfect hour. Increasing your muscle strength and flexibility and preventing or recovering quicker from niggly injuries are some of the benefits of
Pilates. It’s also good for increasing your balance and co-ordination, improving your mood, posture, and alignment. The ladies provide private training along with group sessions of a maximum of three people using a variety of group equipment. They also provide Myofascial release therapy. Myofascial tissue is the tissue that surrounds and supports muscles throughout our bodies and can be areas of chronic pain. They also run short workshops related to specific body areas so an individual can manage their own niggles through simple movement and lifestyle changes. If you’re interested in becoming a Pilates teacher Tania would love to have you become part of the Pilates family by offering Pilates teacher training. Tania is celebrating her 25 years of Pilates teaching this year and has been training teachers for the past 18 of those. Jamiee has spent 20 years in the fitness industry and is passionate about Pilates and ensuring safe and efficient movement for clients.

Palmer Road and Hollybush Place – The man behind the name Marg Farrelly Leaving Brightwater and travelling along Waimea West Road, the first road one meets on the right past the Wai-iti River bridge is Palmer Road. Hollybush Place is a more recent development and can be found off Lord Rutherford Road not far from the Lord Rutherford Memorial. William Palmer was born in 1806 in Milton Malzon, Northamptonshire, England. William had married in 1825 but his wife died the following year. He remarried in 1828 to Elizabeth Bellamy. The 1841 England Census shows that William and his wife had four children of their own as well as two of William’s siblings living with them. William was left to look after his younger siblings when his parents died, his father in 1825 and mother in 1829. William Palmer, his wife Elizabeth and their four children arrived in Nelson on the 28th October 1842, having set sail on the Olympus from Gravesend on the 16th June, in a voyage that took 134 days. William and his family had received free passage to New Zealand, his application having been recommended by the Reverend Dr Butcher. William’s occupation at the time was given as an agricultural labourer, mason

and bricklayer, fitting the bill of those sought by the New Zealand Company to populate the new settlement of Nelson. The passenger list states that William was
aged 36, Elizabeth 33, two boys aged 5 and 2, and two girls aged 10 and 8. By 1844 William had opted to farm in Waimea East. Soon after, in 1845, William had relocated south of the Wairoa River and is recorded as being on Accommodation Section 90, in the Waiiti Valley beyond the 88 Valley

Stream. The Palmer household were living in a clay house on ten acres, partly fenced, three of which were cultivated. William had seven pigs and twenty hens. His crops consisted of potatoes, barley, and wheat. In March of 1847 he was granted a licence to operate an inn on part of his section, where he was to provide stabling for four horses and rooms for two guests. The inn was just over three-quarters of a mile south of Wakefield.
In 1849 he built the Hollybush Inn and Accommodation House on land beside the Wairoa River. Hotel licenses were being granted to persons willing to supply accommodation and ferries at river crossings. He had dismantled the wooden building that had served as his previous inn and reassembled it to become the new inn. He also ran a ferry service across the river. The Hollybush Inn was situated on the Brightwater side of the river, just downstream from the present road bridge. Unfortunately, William did not live long to enjoy his role as publican and accommodation host as he died on the 8th Feb 1850 at the age of forty-three. The cause given for his death was heart disease. He is buried in the Hallowell Cemetery in Nelson. His wife Elizabeth later remarried and was buried in 1882 at St. Paul’s churchyard in Brightwater. Her headstone contains a memorial plaque dedicated to the pair. The inscription reads: In Memory of William & Elizabeth Palmer 1806-1850 1809-1882 Arrived in Nelson from Northampton with their family October 28th 1842 on ‘The Olympus’ Dedicated by descendants at Palmer Connection Reunion 25th October 1998.

The seven senior teams from Richmond AFC recorded four wins, two losses and a draw on Saturday, with their three youth teams having a win, a loss and a bye. The wins came from the young Fresh Choice second division team, the fourth division Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans, the Sprig and Fern Upper Queen Street Masters and the Hothouse Foxes 1st division women, with the Foxes having their 10th straight win of the season.
The women have now scored 51 goals so far and conceded only two. Both the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle and Global Wings Travel Hornbills third division men’s teams had losses. The Fresh Choice Richmond 1st division team travelled to Marlborough to take on Blenheim Rangers in a doubleheader league and cup match. The local boys knew it would be a tough day against league leaders Blenheim, however
with goals to Max Duncan and Dylan Bruce, the side were extremely happy to come away with a 2–2 draw. Unfortunately that meant they went into extra time to find a winner for the second round Price Charity Cup match, in which Blenheim finished the stronger against a 10 man Richmond side scoring twice more to end the game 4-2. The club hosts four senior games at Jubilee Park this Saturday, one at 1pm and three at 3pm.

Waimea surge past Marlborough Boys Jacob Page Reporter

A spirited second half saw Waimea Combined claw back a 16-point half-time deficit to beat Marlborough Boys’ College 34-21 in their UC Championship rugby encounter at Trafalgar Park on Thursday.
Waimea trailed 21-5 at the main break but clicked into gear in the second 35 minutes to earn a bonus point win. Their fourth win of the season lifts them to ninth on the table. Coach James Lash said the team went away from the gameplan in the first half and struggled with the greasy underfoot conditions. He said the determined effort in
the second half showed what the team was capable of. “In previous years we would have struggled to bounce back from a start like that, but this group believes in their abilities and showed if we stick to the plan and do the basics, we are capable of playing some good rugby,” James says. Waimea used attacking grubber
kicks and the big boot of Macca Springer to control the second half of the match and take the victory. “We wanted to get our exit play, from kick-off, right which we did, and then force them into errors in the middle of the field and win the territory battle that way. “Our backline has a lot of talent and I think we were able to put
them under pressure in the second half and capitalise on that.” Waimea earned a 10-day break before they travel to Timaru to play Aoraki Combined on Saturday. “There has not been much of a break this season so I think the timing of it is good with still three games to go before the 2020 competition is over,” James says.

Sprig and Fern runners shine Yvonne West A warm, sunny afternoon in Richmond on Saturday was a wonderful surprise after rain predictions and set the scene for what the 95 cheerful and enthusiastic walkers and runners described as, ‘a great event on a fantastic course’. This was despite the course around the streets of the Upper Richmond area being relentless in its undulations. As soon as one hill climb had been conquered, and a short reprieve on a downhill section enjoyed, another hill appeared in front of the competitors. The race started off at the Bill Wilkes Reserve and took a slightly differnt track than last year, ending up at the Sprig and Fern as usual for much needed rehydration. Social distancing protocols were made clear to competitors before racing began, and also after running had been completed. Despite this being a challenging 10km and many

taking part for the first time in an event like this, there was a great sense of achievement as runners and walkers triumphantly crossed the finish line. While the emphasis of the event was on participation and enjoyment, this did not detract from the com-
petitive spirit among the top athletes. Dan Busch and Klaartje van Schie were the clear male and female winners in very commendable times of 37.38mins and 41.56mins respectively. The male walkers were led home by Don Bate with
Elaine Llewellin the first female walker. This was the second in the Waimea Harriers series of four Sprig and Fern sponsored 10km events, with Brightwater hosting the next race on the 12th September and Mapua the last race on the 17th October.

Wanderers division two earn semi-final A late penalty goal from Bobby Palmer earned Wanderers a division two home semi-final this week. Wanderers beat Marist 11-10, to gain second place on the ladder. Marist progressed to next week’s semi-finals and will play Huia, while Wanderers will host Collingwood. As indicated by the score, the match was a dour affair and relief was the predominant emotion at the conclusion, although Josh Post was justifiably awarded Player of the Day in a titanic effort up front. Bobby Palmer was the Back of the Day for his calmness and reliability at the end. A full card of JAB games was played with matches respecting the Covid-19 level 2 regulations and it was particularly pleasing to see some excellent sideline support for all these games.
Wanderers under-14 team played in Motueka and produced a thoroughly entertaining match against Motueka High School and, although slow to start, scored three good tries in the first half to Hamish Jolly, Jackson Keane and James Strang. They then added five more in the second half with Keane and Strang both getting a brace. Forward dominance was established by Dylan Reed, Ryan Ward and Fynn Paine in the engine room and the team was well led as always by James Strang. Wills Harvey and Leroy Max both contributed manfully to the team effort which resulted in a 48-7 victory. Taylors Wanderers under-18s played at the same venue and also lost by a single score to Motueka High School, this time 26-19 in another competitive and entertaining
match. Callum Stuart stood out for his all round play, well supported by Elliot Brough, Sam Law and skipper Taylor Berkett. The third Wanderers team to play in Motueka on Saturday was the under-13 team who played Riwaka in really positive display of hard working forwards and linking back play. In a match where the girls were the stars on the day, Jaymee Clements, Makeena Holland and Maddie Greenaway performed excellently and saw Wanderers run out to an early 26-0 lead in the first half, before Riwaka fought back well in the second half to score three good tries and result in a final score of 43-17 to the Wanderers side. Tries were scored by Gavin Holder (2), Jaymee Clements, Ryan Campbell, Aiden Burke, Leigh Carter and Luke Woodwiss.
