Teacher pay deal a good first step Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Local teachers are mostly satisfied with the government’s revised offer for teachers, but there is still a long way to go, says local teacher Stacey Ashley. The largest-ever teacher strike saw both primary and secondary school teachers withdraw their services on June 4. Over 50,000 members across two unions decided to strike, after rejecting previous offers made by the Government. The aim of the strike was for the government to spend more money on improving teaching conditions, more staff and more release time. The new offer made by the government includes a pay increase for all teachers, as well as pay parity between primary teachers and secondary teachers. The offer includes a lump sum of $1500 for union members and a new top salary rate of $90,000. If accepted, primary school teachers will see their base salary increase, with a range of $52,429-

$82,992, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a big increase, as the base rate range currently sits from $47,980 to $71,891. Teachers with further responsibilities, like specialised roles or management, receive extra payment above the base salary. A new teacher’s salary would rise from $51,200 to $55,948 by 2021. While the pay increase is a big positive, teachers are still concerned about workload and release time. “A lot of what we wanted was to reduce the workload. While it hasn’t come through yet, the increase in the pay will hopefully bring more teachers in to the profession and get them to stay,” says NZEI Primary Lead Teacher for Nelson, Stacey Ashley. Stacey says that teachers hope that will go a long way towards easing workload and giving them more release time. “Teachers are struggling, working all the time. I’ve seen teachers hospitalised because of stress.” Teachers say that while the

government’s offer isn’t exactly what they were asking for, it is a good first step and holds lots of goodwill. “We were really asking for more support, but the pay increase is a way to get more teachers in the pool and lift morale. Some beginner teachers are holding down three jobs just for the privilege of teaching, so that will take huge stress off.” While the pay increase will help, the accord given alongside the new offer promises that the issues around workload and release time are being lis-

tened to. “It can’t all be done at once, but hopefully it will have a flow-on effect.” Stacey says teachers are feeling good about the offer, with the pay increase seen as an offer of goodwill. “We have faith that the pay increase will be followed up with more resources and more release time to ease the workload.” While there is still a ways to go, Stacey says that the government’s latest offer is a good start. “We’ve got stage one, now we just need to make sure those issues about teacher well-being are addressed.”

Around the world on two wheels FROM PAGE 1 Matt McCrorie Wolfgang Hollmer first came to New Zealand from Germany in 1965, as a hitchhiker. A lot has changed since then. “I first came here as a young traveller many years ago, I was even on the front page of the Wellington Dominion Post.” Now Wolfgang is back for what he calls his ‘farewell tour.’ “I wanted to visit New Zealand one last time, and so many other places I had been, so I decided to do it on my bike.” Last year, Wolfgang spent months cycling around Europe on his e-bike. Now he’s travelling the length of the country and will finish in Bluff after visiting his daughter in Christchurch. Some of the other locations in his trip included cycling through Asia, as well as around parts of Australia.

Financial relief in sight Jacob Page Financial relief isn’t far off for those most affected by February’s Pigeon Valley fire. The main Mayoral relief fund had paid $145,455 to 49 applicants. Another 17 applicants still needed to provide more information by the end of the week. The entire $477,921 in the main fund would then be divided up between all the applicants, estimated to be finished next month. Drivers urged to slow down Sara Hollyman

Nelson Tasman drivers are being urged to slow down as new data analysed by Teletrac Navman shows we are the worst speeders in the country. The company analysed police issued and mobile speeding infringements from January 2015 to December 2018 to find out which region has the worst speeders. The Tasman police district had the highest rate of police issued infringements per capita at 0.58 tickets issued per person.

We were topped by just one other district – Waitemata, with the highest mobile speeding infringements at 0.61 per capita. The two sets of local data gave our region the highest number of speeding infringements per capita at 1.01 tickets per person. The Tasman police district encompasses Nelson, Tasman, the West Coast and Marlborough. Across the district there were over 180,000 tickets issued by officers and mobile speed cameras during the period, a value

of more than $13.7million. Solutions Specialist at Teletrac Navman, Chris L’Ecluse, says they analysed the data to highlight the issue of speeding. “When I was a police officer, it was my job to knock on people’s door and tell them that the person they loved had died. It’s not a part of the job that any officer enjoys.” “Speed is key in stopping distances, travelling at 100km gives a stopping distance of 50m. Brake Charity estimated that for every 2km slower you are, a crash is 5 per cent less likely to happen.”

Hope School comes together for wellbeing Parents of Hope School have banded together to help support each other. Hope School is one of the oldest schools in the Nelson Tasman region and has been bringing the wider community together through the Hope School Country Fair for over 30 years. This year the fair will be held on Saturday, 21st September. Hope School may be a small rural school with a role of 73 children, but it has a big legacy and passionate students who love to showcase their school each year by way of their Country Fair. However, the number of events such as school fairs are on the decline as the logistics of organising them become difficult to sustain and organising teams become conscious of continuous requests for donations from local business. “Being a small rural school means that fundraising through events such as our Country Fair are essential to keeping our school operating” says principal Freya Hogarth. “But sustaining such an event requires a lot of local support at a time where we can see that businesses and community members have already been under a period of pressure and demand,” says Freya.

From left: Lucas Marshall, Ocean Gilcrest, Noah Kern, Georgia Hogarth, Harry Bass, and Tille Young with Hope School principal Freya Hogarth. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Yet continuing the tradition of the fair is something teachers, students, and parents all agree is too important to let disappear. “We all take such pride and joy in bringing thousands of people together to share a fun, family day out.” As the school looks forward to this year’s event, they do so with

a renewed focus on community well-being. Freya says that this year is one where community events like the school fair are particularly important. “It becomes apparent during recent events such as the Pigeon Valley fires and Christchurch attacks just how valuable it is to

be surrounded and supported by a close-knit community, so this year we would like to connect with as much of our community as possible” adds Freya. To that end, the school is looking to establish a new group known as the Friends and Whanau of Hope School. It is hoped that the group will

bring together past and present pupils and their families, local community groups, local businesses, and anyone who feels an affinity for the school and surrounding area, to help run events and create a stronger sense of community. The group will provide an opportunity to band together for various initiatives across the year that strengthen the bond between the school and the community. The first focus for the group will be revitalising the Hope School Country Fair, and getting a team behind the event to truly give it the focus and attention that it deserves. Hope School would like to invite anyone to join the Friends and Whanau of Hope School, or simply offer support to this year’s Hope School Country Fair. Anyone can help out by way of donating time before or during the event, donating goods or services, helping with baking, preserve making, crafts, propagating plants, offering entertainment options, or sponsoring a stall. For those interested, get in touch with the Hope School team through their website www.hope. school.nz/country-fair or by contacting the office on 03 544 8427 or office@hope.school.nz.

Local drummer finds his rhythm Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A local drummer is making some big noise on the other side of the world. Tasman’s very own Harry Binskin is is currently touring throughout the UK with breakout band ‘Georgia & the Vintage Youth.’ Harry emigrated to New Zealand from the UK with his family when he was 6 years old, but a desire to pursue his passion for drumming took him on an adventure to London back in 2017, after graduating from Waimea College in 2015. Unsure what to do with himself at age 19, while many of his friends were struggling through university life, Harry decided to make a go of it at his lifelong passion, drumming. His gamble paid off. Shortly after arriving in London, Harry started auditioning for bands, winning a spot with the band ‘Georgia & The Vintage Youth’, playing a mixture of jazz, swing & soul. Harry has been a lifelong drummer, and his inspiration isn’t far from home. “My parents were a massive in-

The band have recently been signed by a live agent ‘Talentbanq’ on a publishing deal that will see them record three EP’s. You can find the band on Apple Music or Spotify.

Trees and power lines don’t mix Trees and vegetation can interfere with our network and even interrupt electricity supply. That’s why it’s important to manage them so that they don’t get too close to power lines.

Network Tasman takes a proactive approach to keeping trees away from our power lines by surveying all of our lines on a regular basis. We store the information collected in these surveys in a database. Our database records the full history of each surveyed site, including the condition of nearby trees.

Librarian Marija Charlton displays a handful of some of the library’s more popular books. Photo: Matt McCrorie.

Popular books revealed Matt McCrorie The most popular books from the Richmond Library have been revealed to the Waimea Weekly. The Richmond Library has seen 2152 new members join from July 2018 – May 2019, with an increase in visitors in the last year, 27,052 more than the year July 2017 – May 2018.

A whopping 550,420 items were borrowed from the library in the last year, however down 4,308 from the year previous. Lee Child takes home the title for the most popular author, with three of his books the most popular adult books. ‘The Midnight Line,’ by Lee Child, was the most popular book, being borrowed 175 times,

If we identify trees that are growing too close to power lines, we let property owners know by sending them what is known as a cut and trim notice (CT Notice), as required by The Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. We issue more than 1500 CT Notices each year. Property owners are responsible for keeping their trees away from power lines. However, the regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim – we record whether a tree has had its free trim in our database.

with ‘Past Tense’ also by Child, taking the number two spot. Kids books also prove popular, with ‘Diary of a Minecraft zombie’ the most popular children’s book, borrowed 162 times in the last year. ‘The World’s Worst Children’ was the runner-up, and ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ still proves to be a children’s classic, borrowed 120 times.

When our vegetation team undertakes a survey they also look for trees with high-risk issues that could cause the tree to fall onto the lines, such as trees that are diseased, damaged, or have branches splitting out. All of these factors have the potential to damage the network and cause power outages. To help mitigate this risk, we negotiate a solution with the tree owner (this often involves trimming or felling the tree).

Surveying our lines and notifying tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages attributed to line damage caused by trees. With the cooperation of tree owners, our electricity supply has been more resilient and storm response costs have been lowered. This means everyone pays less for their electricity.

New Zealand better than most for gun buyback Steve Page With the new regulations about to take effect, Police have released more information, particularly the much anticipated “buy back” scheme. Gun owners were waiting to see exactly what their guns might be worth under this direction. So, let’s have a look. Let’s say we have a Colt AR15 with 30 shot mag and suppresser, along with an aftermarket upgraded pull-back slide. The real cost of that was gun $3500, Mag $200, suppressor $360 and pull-back $150. Total of $4210. So, how are the government going to compensate me when I hand in this weapon? The gun is in ‘as new’ condition and has hardly been used, maybe 50 rounds. According to the guides it’s worth $3325 and I will also be entitled to 70% of the value of the parts, roughly $500. All up I should get $3825. I’m not happy, but I’m ok about it. It will all depend on the condition of the weapon and the criteria are very clear when you go to the website. It gives you a complete breakdown on what you might reasonably expect as compensation. As a firearms owner

Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page holding what is now an illegal firearm, a semi auto Colt AR15. Very shortly these guns will have to be handed in, with compensation paid to the owners. Photo: Matt McCrorie. I do have to say it appears a lot fairer than the recent Australian buyback, and if we all keep cool, we can all be law-abiding citizens. Consider also the ramifications of not complying. Potential jail time and, worse still, a possible lifetime loss of license. As a sporting shotgunner that would not be fun at all.

Interesting to note, it is also becoming a trend worldwide so we don’t have it on our own. And an important part here we all need to be clear about. No matter if you agree or disagree, the police are merely enforcing a government mandate. Save yourself some grief and if you are unhappy don’t take it out

Exemptions People wanting to apply for an endorsement to possess prohibited items need to take the opportunity to do that during the amnesty period. For example, a person to whom the item has special significance as an heirloom, dealers, collectors, museum curators, theatrical members/ broadcasters, and people involved in wild animal and animal pest control. The Police online notification form enables people to show an intent to apply for such an exemption.

The buy-back process The buy-back process applies to newly prohibited firearms held by people with a valid firearms licence. No firearms licence is required to apply for compensation for prohibited parts and magazines that are handed in. The buy-back offer is available until 20 Dec 2019. A base price list has been developed in consultation with firearms and industry specialists which reflects a value for firearms in the New Zealand market just prior to the events of March 2019. A three-tier grading system - based on the condition of the firearm - will be applied to compensate owners of prohibited firearms fairly. A person with a prohibited firearm that is: • In new or near-new condition, will receive 95% of the base price. • In used condition, will receive 70% of the base price. • In poor condition, will receive 25% of the base price. There are two tiers that will be used for the compensation of prohibited magazines and parts: • Those in new or used condition will receive 70% of the base price. • Those in poor condition will receive 25% of the base price. The full list of firearms and parts available for buy-back are listed on the page Changes to Firearms Law - prohibited firearms, on the Police website. If your firearm is not listed on this price list, please note that we will be reviewing the list and up-dating where appropriate. You are encouraged to check the price list for the value of your item/s and then notify Police online of your intention to participate in the buyback process, if you have not already registered your intention to do so. Registering online will speed up the process when handing in your firearm/s at a community collection event or other hand-in option.

Modification Modification is voluntary. Some prohibited firearms with non-detachable tubular magazines may be able to be safely and permanently modified to reduce the magazine capacity. Those who elect to have their firearm modified will be able to apply for the cost of the modification, up to a maximum of $300, within the six-month buy-back period. If you are unsure if your firearm can be modified, we encourage you to seek advice from an approved gunsmith or dealer. A list of approved gunsmiths will be on the Police website soon. Then you should notify Police online of your intention to modify the firearm.

Community collection events Community collection events will be held around New Zealand, starting from 13 July 2019. This is an opportunity for you to hand in your firearm/s, magazines or parts, for buy-back or amnesty. If you have small arms ammunition which is now prohibited we can safely dispose of this, however, please do not bring any high explosive ammunition to the collection point. If you have high explosive ammunition which you need to dispose of, please call 105. A full list of community collection events in your area and further information about the process will continue to be updated on the page Changes to Firearms Law - prohibited firearms, on the Police website. Things to bring with you when attending a community collection event: • Your reference number from the Police online notification form. • Your firearms licence. • Your bank account number. • Photo identification (driver’s licence or passport). • All your prohibited firearms, magazines and parts, cleared of all ammunition. • Any other firearm/s or parts you wish to hand-in to Police for destruction.

Threat made to Waimea made of a non-conductive nylon. The pilot checked for any College A threat was made to Waimea College by a student online, on Tuesday, June 18th. Principal Scott Haines issued a notice to parents via the school app to say that the police brought the threat to their attention, but stressed that there were no concerns for safety. “The safety of our school community is paramount, and police and Waimea College investigated the threat with urgency,” Scott said. A young person had been spoken to who admitted that they made the post as a form of ‘social experiment.’ Scott says the student understands the distress they have caused and “deeply regrets their actions.” “Police and Waime College will be working further with the student regarding this, but we ask that everyone is mindful of their privacy at this time given the circumstances.”

Fake bank notes cause concern

Police have received reports of fake $50 and $100 notes circulating throughout the Tasman District recently. Police ask people to keep an eye out, and always check notes before you hand over any for goods. Anyone who believes they’ve received a fake bank note should report it to police.

Hot air balloon comes close to power lines

Passengers in a hot air balloon had a fortunate reprieve last Wednesday after they landed just metres from power lines in a frozen paddock in Moutere. The balloon, which had taken off from Dovedale earlier that morning, landed hard but safely in the field but was so close to the powerlines that it draped itself over them. The people on board did not feel an electric current as the balloon was

potential safety issues before the four people on board made it out safely. The Civil Aviation Authority was notified of the incident.

FINAL WEEK!

Creative Community Grants

Applications will soon close for the latest round of creative community grants. Creative New Zealand fully fund the grants and Tasman District Council administer them locally. There are three rounds per year. Closing dates are: 10 March, 10 July and 10 November. Projects must meet one or more of the following funding criteria: • Broad community involvement The project will create opportunities for local communities to engage with and participate in arts activities. • Diversity The project will support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity. • Young people The project will enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and actively participate in the arts. A Council appointed assessment committee made up of local councillors and community members considers all applications and apportions available funds accordingly. Not all arts activities are funded. Check the guide to ensure your project meets the criteria. Application forms are available at Tasman District Council offices, Tasman District Libraries, or on the Tasman District Council website.

New playground goes back to basics Matt McCrorie A new community playground has been built in Richmond, but it may look a little different to what you might be used to. While other playgrounds are full of bright colours, made with plastic, the newly-completed playground on Mako street is completely natural. The council project was undertaken by Nelmac, and Wholesale landscapes.

With a new playground needed in Richmond as development continues, Tom Filmer of Wholesale landscapes said that “the idea was to have more of a focus on a more natural play space.” “There was a move towards more artificial play spaces a number of years ago, building with plastics.” Now, Tom says there is a move back to more natural resources. “We’ve used logs, wooden equipment, trees. It a more

resourceful way of creating a playground. Tony Nichol, Landscape Supervisor for Nelmac, said the project was a nice change. “It’s really good to get away from plastic and metal, and to be using natural wood.” The new playground is a much more sustainable project. Tony says that some of the logs used on the playground were left over from other Nelmac jobs, like tree clearing. “It’s something that would

have gone to waste otherwise.” It’s also more cost effective and easier to maintain than a standard playground created with plastic and metal. “Plastic is a large capital expense and has to be replaced after about 10 years,” Tom says. And Tom says that it’s even better for the kids. “It gives them a chance to get a bit rough, get a bit more dirty and be exposed to good bacteria.”

It’s the start of a new chapter for Wakefield Pharmacy, with well-known and respected pharmacist Doug Chapman soon to be leaving the business to allow his life to take a new direction. The pharmacy has been located in the charming Wakefield village since 1951, and although it’s sad for locals that Doug is moving on after seven years of dedicated service, they can rest assured that new owners Scott Fry and Andrew McGlashen want to ‘carry on the torch’ and continue providing the best healthcare possible to everyone in the region. Wakefield Pharmacy services the local community across the upper South Island, including deliveries to the Murchison, St Arnaud, Tapawera, Dovedale and Brightwater areas. “It’s sad to be leaving the people, the staff, the faces I’ve seen every day,” says Doug. “But it’s another step forward in my life. I’ve got grandchildren arriving in Christchurch and kids back from overseas – so we are doing the family rather than business thing, so that’s exciting,

For Doug, running Wakefield Pharmacy has always been about patients first, business second. “We have always tried to make it a nice environment where people feel welcomed, happy and safe. Doug says he’s sure that with Scott and

Andrew as the new owners, the pharmacy will be just as good - and hopefully better. “It’s been an important part of the community and I’d like to see it stay that way.” And that’s exactly what Scott and Andrew plan to do. “We are very grateful for this opportunity – Doug and his team have done an excellent job and we are looking forward to continuing to provide a high level of services

to Wakefield and the wider rural community,” says Andrew. “We wish Doug every success and enjoyment with his retirement and customers will be pleased to see his familiar face back every now and again to help cover holidays.” Both Scott and Andrew are local Tasman boys. Welcomes new owners 4 Edward St, Wakefield

Fry’s pharmacist Rob Hill with Scott Fry. and Fry’s Pharmacy in Richmond. Andrew has managed McGlashen Pharmacy for the last eleven years and Scott has managed Fry’s Pharmacy for the last eight years. During this time Scott and Andrew have striven to deliver the highest level of customer experience through embracing new initiatives offered in the health care sector and always prioritising their customers health requirements. Many people will recognise the Fry name locally in the health sector in Wakefield and the wider Nelson area, with Scott’s brother Mark and sister-inlaw Eloise being doctors at the

Wakefield Health Centre. Scott and Andrew are excited by the chance to operate Wakefield Pharmacy and will take over the business on the 1st of July this year. Scott says “Our vision is to enhance the existing services and continue to provide the best healthcare possible for the community”. A key initiative is to undertake a refurbishment of the store in the next three-four months, to enhance the customer experience, which all the team are really excited about. Scott says, “we are excited to have a fantastic and experienced team onboard, with a few new members joining the team

to support our vision.” Scott and Andrew are delighted to have secured the skill set and experience of Zoe Millington as the Managing Pharmacist, supported closely by Scott Fry. Zoe has worked throughout New Zealand and the United Kingdom as a pharmacist and is very much looking forward to settling into the Wakefield community. Zoe has become one of the locals over the last few years in the Tasman area and is very keen on the outdoors and enjoying all the region has to offer. With ongoing changes in the healthcare system, Scott and Andrew are driven to ensure that any changes or initiatives such as new technology or health services will be available where possible to their customers. “A number of such initiatives have been implemented to date in the Richmond pharmacies, such as being one of the first in the region to offer Warfarin monitoring, which has been positively received by our customers,” says Scott. “I am hoping that with improved technologies, we can really drop the barrier of access to healthcare, particularly for some of our customers who are more geographically challenged,” says Andrew.

The Wakefield Health Centre staff would like to thank Doug for all his invaluable support over the years and wish him well for the future. We also welcome Andrew and Scott and look forward to working with them.

will soon be moving to a brand new, purpose-built premises. The premises is currently under construction, and is located opposite Richmond Health Centre on Oxford Street. The expected opening date is around the second week of September this year. In addition, we are looking forward to the long-term health collaboration opportunities that come with

being a more integrated health care centre.” Meanwhile, Fry’s Pharmacy has been located at Lower Queen Street Health for eight years now and Scott says, “the benefits for patients having the pharmacy located so close to other healthcare professionals really adds to the multidisciplinary approach, delivering better health outcomes for their customers.” Scott is looking forward to spending time between Wakefield and Fry’s Pharmacy after the 1st of July. Importantly, to ensure Fry’s Pharmacy continues to deliver the highest lev-

el of service to their loyal customers, Scott and Andrew have appointed a local pharmacist, Rob Hill, to join the Fry’s Pharmacy team, working alongside Scott. “We are thrilled to have Rob onboard and we are sure that you will enjoy getting to know him,” says Scott. So, it’s onwards and upwards for Doug and a busy few months ahead for Andrew and Scott. Andrew says, “A lot of people know us already and we are excited to have this opportunity to extend our services offered locally and continue to deliver fantastic customer experiences.”

more money and work is being put into shared spaces and cycle lanes and paths in new developments, and with the increased popularity of ebikes, it’s no wonder that cycling in the region is booming. Aptly named ‘HQ’ café has become a favourite spot for cyclists, and anyone who visits the café on a sunny Saturday or Sunday will see a horde of high vis jackets and a throng of bikes parked up at the front. One of those cyclists is 92-year-old Fred McKee, who regularly takes his e-bike out to Brightwater on a Saturday for a coffee. “It’s an amazing spot. I’ve been biking this way for five years” Fred says that the vineyards and orchards make for an attractive setting, and the Great Taste Trail helps. Brightwater is rapidly growing; Fred says that well maintained cycleways like the the one between Richmond and Brightwater are one of the reasons places like Brightwater are thriving. ‘Good cycleways make all the difference.’ Joanna Burbery, assistant manager of HQ café, says that “we even had to add several bike racks to the front of the café, just to accommodate the number of cyclists we have.”

Winning weekend The satisfaction was easy to see on the faces of the players and coaching staff from the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st division team as they fought back from 2 – 1 down to win 3 – 2 against Nelson Suburbs 3 – 2 at Saxton Field on Saturday. The winning goal came in extra time and coach Clay Wilhelmus said it was one of the gutsiest performances he’s seen from his young side all season. Lukas Knepper scored two of the goals and Alex Lindbom got one. The remaining Richmond AFC senior teams recorded another 5 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. The Fresh Choice Richmond 2nd team had no game. The wins were from Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Richmond Thistle, Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags, Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans, About Beauty at Monaco Swans and the Hothouse Foxes. The one loss came from the 2nd div Hornbills team . The Helen Ruston U16 Development Teama had a 4 – 1 win over Nelson Suburbs.

The Fensom family won the prize for the most successful boat and several other trophies.

A most successful year Dominik Berghamer At the end of the season, the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is looking back at its most successful year so far. Over 240 members is a new record for us, but we are hopeful to increase the numbers again next year. Once more, the Snapper Cup and lots of other events and social happenings will be on the programme. A majority of the members, including dozens of juniors, attended the big annual prizegiving last Saturday. A great opportunity to catch up with their fishing mates, look back at the last season, have a drink and spin a tale or two. Almost 700 fish of 24 species had been entered in the Club’s competition and, thanks to our most generous sponsors, prizes worth more than $5000 could be handed out to the lucky (and obviously skilled) winners. The overall winners of the 2018/2019 season were Ollie

Meek in the juniors section, Sue Hawkins in the Ladies’ section and – once again- Reid Forrest as the overall champion. Even though out of commission for over a month due to a major mishap, “Kayza” and the Fensom family took out the prize for the most successful boat. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club AGM will take place at the Nelson City Club on July 17th at 7:00pm. All members are invited to come along and have their say regarding club matters. Running a club of this size is no small task and we are always in need of new committee members who are willing to help share the workload. After four years of doing amazing work for the club, Michael Stump will step down as president, a huge Thank You! again from behalf of the committee and all members! If you are interested in finding out more about our club, visit our website www.dawnbreak ers.co.nz

Jacks too strong for Richmond F45 It was an equally energetic start by both Richmond F45 and Jacks at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night. Goalkeeper Sarah Steele returned from injury, however Richmond F45 were without effective shooter Tia van Diepen, which greatly impacted the performance of the side. Maddison Springer impressed, finding two early interceptions, with Amy Cunningham and Sarah Steele combining well defensively. Richmond enjoyed the speed and energy of Lauryn Hippolite holding the midcourt.

With the first quarter ending 13 - 9 in Jacks’ favour, the streamlined side stormed out of the gates in the second quarter, scoring five consecutive goals from the whistle. Hannah Dawson and Rayna Olsen were formidable in the shooting circle, however Richmond F45’s defenders made them work for every goal, reaching half-time at 30-18. Jacks continued to show what a well-oiled machine they wereinto the third quarter, with smooth through-court play. Steele made her presence felt, stealing several well-timed in-

terceptions. Dual-registered Garin College athlete, Caitlin Roberts, made a solid debut at wing attack. Harriet Ogilvie worked exceptionally hard at Goal Attack, shooting all of Richmond F45’s 24 goals in the quarter, ending the third quarter 41-26. Jacks continued to assert control with their formidable midcourt of Jess Drummond and Kirsty Thompson in the fourth quarter. Maddi Springer looked exceptional, however Jacks’ speed and precision cemented the win 59-38 and top place in the competition.

Runners battle the cold in winter marathon A cool winter’s day on Sunday meant that keen competitors were very eager to get underway at this year’s Monaco Mid-Winter Marathon. The rain that threatened for the day never eventuated and competitors enjoyed near perfect marathon running conditions this year. Now in its sixth year the full marathon field saw finishing times ranging from under 3 hours to more than 7 hours. Around 60 entrants toughed out the 42.2km marathon course, with a fantastic dozen of these participants taking on, and completing, the marathon distance for the very first time! Welcoming and celebrating first time marathoners has now become a key focus of the event! The male marathon looked likely to be a solo show, after the late scratching of some fast, local marathoners. A solo show it certainly was, with up-and-coming 18 year old George Varney of Blenheim, prevailing in 2 hours 50 minutes, more than half an hour clear of second-placed local runner Byron Munro and

third-placed Havelock resident Graeme Lear. However, Varney had plenty of company amongst fastpaced relay runners for much of the outward leg, with 2 relay teams also sneaking in under the 3-hour mark. In the end though, Varney prevailed to be the first to cross the line. This year’s marathon could well have been ‘all about the girls’ with several female entrants more than capable of prevailing in the 42km race. In the end, though, the women’s marathon race was won by local runner Klaartje Van Schie, in 3 hours and 20 minutes, coming in second overall in the full marathon, and coming close to breaking the existing women’s race record,. Van Schie would certainly have broken the women’s record were it not for a navigational mix up near Richmond on the outward leg that unfortunately saw several entrants running up to an extra kilometre! Marlborough’s ‘Ironwoman’ Jess Barnes looked set to be on Van Schie’s tail, but a tough racing schedule and winter ills saw Barnes have to pull out at

the 30km mark, leaving second place to existing record holder Colette Read in 3 hours and 32 minutes with third-placed Sarah Grimes nine minutes behind. This year’s marathon also saw 8 participants race walking the 42.2km with this year’s winner, local race walker Tania Gardner, recording a time of 5hours 11 minutes for the distance, narrowly missing out on the race record. Gardner is to be commended though as her failure to eclipse the record was largely due to rendering support and assistance to an ailing runner over the final few kilometres. Around 350 participants from places as far afield as the U.K and the U.S.A. took part across the event’s various categories. This year a large number of work and social teams dusted off their running gear to take part in the growing 6 person relay. The relay started at the Honest Lawyer, Monaco, with participants running or walking to Rabbit Island. Next year’s date is Sunday June 21st June, already with huge expressions of interest.

Nelson Matters

The new law I passed in 2016 requiring all rental properties to be insulated takes effect this week. It is estimated that it will make 180,000 homes nationwide and 3,000 in Nelson and Tasman warmer and drier. There is a cost, but the benefits of healthier families, savings in energy and lower power bills is worth it. New Zealand’s problem with damp, cold homes is due to our national building laws not requiring insulation until 1978. There was a mistaken belief that New Zealand’s climate was so mild that it was not needed. A few Councils required insulation prior to 1978 and some

wise builders installed it, but the legacy was 700,000 older homes without insulation. Retrofitting insulation into these homes is a massive undertaking. It needs a pragmatic approach because for some homes it is impractical. The biggest gains are in ceiling and underfloor insulation. National set out on this task when elected in 2008. I took the view that before the Government told others what to do we needed to get our own house in order. My first priority as Housing Minister was insulating the 30,000 state houses that were not insulated, which we completed in 2015.

The second phase was a subsidy scheme called Warm-Up New Zealand. We invested $440 million in the programme and got over 300,000 homes insulated, including 6,000 in Nelson and Tasman. It was great working locally with people like Councillor Bill Dahlberg who led the local Warmer, Healthier Homes Trust and Paul Brockie from Absolute Energy. Most of the uptake of the subsidy was by home owners. The problem with tenanted properties is that neither the landlord nor the tenant has the right incentives to get the insulation installed. The third phase was my regula-

tions requiring rental homes to be insulated. It included some pragmatic exemptions. It gave landlords three years to get the insulation installed. There has been a mad rush this month to meet the 1 July 2019 deadline. There is still a job to do in ensuring compliance with the new insulation law. I set up a new Ministry Compliance unit to help enforce the law. I also encourage any tenants to get in touch with my office if their home has not been insulated. There is still a last group of about 100,000 older owner-occupied homes nationally and 2,000 locally that need insulating. Grants

of up to 67% of the cost are still available for homeowners that can be accessed through EECA or by contacting my office. This work over the last ten years has got over 500,000 homes nationally and 10,000 locally insulated. One million New Zealanders and 20,000 Nelsonians are warmer and drier. The benefits are less people getting sick and fewer work or school days lost. Researchers have estimated it is saving over 100 lives a year. It is also saving millions of kilowatt hours of electricity. People sometimes ask why I am in politics. It is getting to do good practical stuff like this. Advt.

Kumagai-Bang Janene (nee Bang)

ORR Vincent Arthur (Vin)

Sadly passed away in London 9th June 2019 on her final journey, surrounded by family, taken too soon – aged 49. Soulmate, Wife and Love of her Life of Tanya. Much loved and adored daughter of Max & Jill, cherished sister of Michelle. Adored daughterin-law to Jan and the late Arthur. Awesome Aunty to Zoe and Megan. Loved Niece to Aunty Rae. Loved and Cherished enthusiast to Michael, Jeremy and Nicholas. Awesome mum to ‘The Boys’ – Dudleee, Duunstan and the late Dooogle. Incredible niece, friend and mentor to many. A person with a passion for life, and heart bigger than space. We would like to acknowledge Steve Delaney for his ‘above and beyond’ care and Nelson Hospital for the support provided, and all the incredible staff at St Thomas’ Hospital, London for their exceptional care, compassion and kindness. The contribution made by F A Albin & Son to assist with our arrangements to acknowledge Janene’s passing, and get her home were undertaken with the utmost respect and dignity. We are truly thankful. A service to celebrate Janene’s life is to be held on Friday 28th June 2019 at 1.00pm at Hope Community Church. Donations to The Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
