Offer for village rejected An offer to buy Waimea Village has been rejected by its owners increasing the bubbling tension at the village even further. Members of the team negotiating for the residents with Michael and Carolyn Wright for its purchase wouldn’t go on the record with the Waimea Weekly but it is understood an offer of around $700,000 was made for the village, an offer rejected as too low. The Wrights counter-offered with $1.7 million, which was also rejected. It is understood they bought the village in 2005 for around $350,000. Residents had hoped to buy the Wrights out of the village so they could manage it themselves after ongoing lease fee disputes, but that now looks unlikely and residents are pinning their

hopes on winning a court case against the owners. The case – which should be heard within the next two months – is disputing the amount of money in a repairs and replacement fund to be used for the upgrade of the village and which the residents pay into. The residents believe the money that should be there isn’t, but the Wrights have previously told the Weekly it does exist but have refused to send proof to the residents. Councillor Kit Maling has been working with the residents on the buy-out deal and is disappointed the offer has been rejected. “What they want for it is ridiculous and the residents SEE PAGE 5

You could forgive Zoe Walker for wanting to pinch herself. Lining up against the defending champions the Kia Magic, marking Silver Fern legend Irene van Dyk and playing in front of a capacity crowd, the former Waimea College student really was living her dream in the Trafalgar Centre on Sunday night. But while the 69-46 scoreline will be one to forget, there is no doubting the moment will be one to remember for the 19 year old Easiyo Tactix defender. “It was awesome especially in front of the home crowd and being the first game against the Magic. It was a real honour,” she says. “This was something that I was aiming for after college, maybe in like five years time. It’s come pretty soon.” Zoe had played against Irene at a New Zealand Under-21 training camp but was still clearly a little starstruck, especially looking across the court to see a host of other Silver Ferns including captain Casey Kopua, Laura Langman, Leana de Bruin and Julianna Naoupu. “Irene is really lovely, she says hi at the beginning of the game and she doesn’t talk any smack. As soon as she’s under the post you know she’s not going to miss and then if she does her rebounding is just awesome so it’s pretty hard.” This was the first time an ANZ Championship game had been held in Nelson and while organisers will be happy with the capacity crowd of 1500, it was substantially lower than the 4000 fans that regularly show up in Christchurch. However, Tactix coach Leigh Gibbs hoped those in SEE PAGE 2

Boy racers being phased out
A tougher approach from police seems to be phasing out boy racers, amid fear their cars could be crushed or impounded for repeat offences. Earlier this month police minister Anne Tolley stated that illegal street racing offences had fallen 35 per cent since 2009 when the Government introduced legislation to combat boy racers. Local police have also welcomed the news on the back of their own operation in 2012 that saw cars impounded as a result of driver behaviour. A spokesperson for the Nelson Police says the individuals involved were finally getting the message that they could lose their vehicle if their driving habits are not altered. “This group has in the past not been deterred by financial penalties for their actions. The fact this operation has been so successful is put this down to the individuals involved realising that there is a real risk.” But while a harder approach by police has seen some boy racers stop gathering at Friday night skids, some young drivers spoken to by the Waimea Weekly say police are tar-

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz geting anyone that drives a modified car, even if they do not use it to drive illegally. Liam Gill, who has only been fined once for speeding, says he was all for cleaning up the act of people who broke the law as it gave the rest a bad name. “Unfortunately they come down hard on everyone and us legal ones still get hassled big time. But what’s got to be done gets done.” Liam says the vehicle confiscation and seizure bill, which ensures offenders’ cars are crushed after their third driving offence, has changed the way people in the car community operate. “I for one don’t want my $15,000 car crushed so I avoid trying to even tempt myself to do a burnout. Not saying people still don’t but if you get caught you should pay the price.” Another driver, who admits he was getting fined every weekend and is on his sixth licence suspension, says he is not surprised
that the number of offences are reducing as he himself had stopped because of tougher police enforcement. “It’s a step that needed to be taken or the streets will soon be owned by boy racers,” the driver says. “Basically having my licence taken from me for getting too many fines has stopped me from driving illegally because I don’t want that to happen again.” Other drivers told the Waimea Weekly they stopped attending skids at Waimea West on a Friday night simply because they had “grown up” while some took the legal path and visited events in Christchurch. Another driver who was building a boy racer car says he goes to Christchurch for drift competitions and was not using it on the street to kill anyone. “There is a big difference with the attitude and mind set. Some think it’s okay to go out the wop wops and do skids and I agree fully but what if it took an ambulance one and a half hours to get out there and by that stage a driver was dead? They need to hurry up and build this Tapawera track so young teens stop getting killed and impounded.”
Zoe’s dream netball debut FROM PAGE 1 attendance enjoyed the rare the opportunity to witness first-class netball. “You saw last year’s champion team on show and they certainly made us work hard.” When questioned about Zoe’s start, she said it was thoroughly deserved. “Over the game Zoe was learning how to change things up but I think she did well as a 19 year old.” Zoe was used in two defensive positions throughout the game with the GK bib being swapped for a GD one in the third quarter, although her debut was cut short with a muscle strain restricting her to a spectator role in the fourth. The Easiyo Tactix now head back to Christchurch for the weekend’s matchup against the Southern Steel, although the side is scheduled to return to the Trafalgar Centre on May 19 to play the West Coast Fever.

Murchison residents are hoping they have seen the last of rising flood waters after work began this week to shift 80,000 cubic metres of gravel from the Matakitaki River. Tasman District Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency have agreed to jointly fund the $500,000 river work project after intensive lobbying from residents that have endured a flood clean up three times in the past two years. Councillor Stuart Bryant says while there are no guarantees that the work will fully prevent flooding in Murchison, it should give the river much more capacity for water to flow. “Engineers and council staff are pretty confident that this should ease the pressure at the bridge,” he says. river, says the announcement has been a long time coming. “We’re extremely over the flooding. We’ve been lobbying the council for a long time to get some action done,” he says. Dave says the worst effect the flooding has had was the lake of water mixed with cow manuare, silt and fertlizer that has formed over his property each time.“It’s not a raging torrent it deposits that silt very quietly across everything. The bottom level of the house gets trashed so all of our appliances are up on raised platforms at the moment until we could see what the council had done.” Dave says his insurance company had been “squirming” at the thought of further flooding. “The insurance bill is in its tens of thousands everytime and for us the landscape and garden is either washed off somewhere or covered in silt.”

Chance to meet Longest dry spell ever the councillors still causing problems Richmond ward councillors will meet with the public tonight to discuss three key topics. Part of the Meet the Councillors Series, the discussions will include the Draft Annual Plan – which is out for consultation until April 22 – as well as upgrades to Queen St and urban density and what that could mean for Richmond.
Councillor Judene Edgar says the three topics are importantly crucial for Richmond. “They could change the face of Richmond as we know it and the community need to be aware of the projects, timing and potential costings.” The discussion is being held at the Tasman District Council Chambers at 7:30pm tonight.

Offer for village rejected FROM PAGE 1

School unveils water wheel
For its 100th reunion, Brightwater School added a logo of the town’s iconic water wheel to the school uniform. Fast forward 25 years and the school has gone one better, building an actual replica at the front of the factility. Past students came from far and wide to reunite for the 125th celebrations, which featured a dinner, a social, the water wheel unveiling and presentations from current students. Principal Gerald Baldwin says the highlight was having letters written from current students to all of the attendees. “They found them in their classroom and actually talked to them so that was definitely the highlight. They said it was just wonderful being able to talk to the children.” A water wheel used to power the town and has been an iconic symbol for Brightwater during the past 25 years. Gerald says it was a special occasion being able to unveil the replica, which will operate during school hours.
don’t have that sort of money so we still working on it but I’m not confident.” That news comes after some residents have been issued with eviction notices after they refused to pay the latest lease increase forced on them but Kit says those people should seek legal advice. “They need to do that. There are places around that offer free advice and residents need to use those services,” he says. Residents committee chairman Jerry Rowland says people in the village are confused and upset. He says he’s not
surprised by the Wrights rejection and their counter offer but is disappointed. “We’re now looking forward to the court case and putting our faith in the justice system.” The monthly lease fees were raised from $80 in 2010 to $125 the following year and are now $184.75. The Wrights are set to issue another increase next week. Residents own their homes, pay normal council rates and all other bills. The lease covers a management fee, mowing of the lawns on the common grounds only and general maintenance of the village, although residents argue this hasn’t

Aussie lawyer threatens Weekly
F
Hey, thanks for reading our paper. Have you got a story? Give us a call on 544 9037
The Gold Coast lawyer behind the cancer trust “ripping off ” local donors has threatened the Waimea Weekly with a lawsuit after it exposed the trust’s fundraising tactics. The threat comes as the Cancer Research Charitable Trust suspends all fundraising in New Zealand and the Department of Internal Affairs launches an urgent review of the trust and its activities. The Australian-based trust – which was collecting in Nelson and Tasman last week – was found to have donated less than 5 per cent of the $1.1 million it collected from New Zealanders over four years, with the rest going towards staff and administration costs. Since the article was published in the Weekly the story has spread nationally and was printed in The New Zealand Herald last week and featured on the national Newstalk ZB talkback programme. Last week the Weekly received legal threats from Troy Manhire, the executive officer of the trust and a lawyer on Australia’s Gold Coast. Dozens of locals have also come forward with their stories of donating to the trust, saying they feel “ripped off ” and are disgusted by the low amount

that the trust donates to cancer research. In the last financial year not one dollar of the $111,000 collected – some of that from Nelson – was donated to any charity. Mr Manhire says that donating to cancer research is only a part of the trusts goals, the other being awareness. He says collectors hand out flyers to those who donate which “reaches thousands”. The Department of Internal Affairs, which oversees registered charities, has launched an urgent review of the trust. The Serious Fraud Office is also evaluating the matter, and police say they will await the outcome of those probes before acting on a complaint. On Sunday the trust said it had written to Internal Affairs to advise it had suspended fundraising while it addressed concerns about its practices. Trustees would also meet this week to consider changing the trust’s name, given its focus had shifted from research grants to public awareness campaigns. But questions remain over where the trust’s money is being spent.
In a 2007 press release, the trust said funds raised in New Zealand were used exclusively for New Zealand projects, but it has been revealed that nearly 40 per cent of the trust’s money is spent in Australia. Under the Charities Act, a registered charity must state the percentage of its annual income spent overseas. In January, the trust notified Internal Affairs that 38 per cent of its New Zealand-sourced funds were spent overseas. The total amount is not yet known because the trust’s latest financial returns are not yet publicly available. Mr Manhire, would not go into financial detail on Sunday but said the money spent in Australia went towards New Zealand projects. He gave the production of cancer prevention pamphlets as an example. “You’re trying to draw some conclusion that in some way we’ve misled people - that’s not the case,” says Mr Manhire. Fundraising Institute chief executive James Austin said he was “very shocked” to hear just how little money went towards research. “They should lose their charitable status,” he says. Additional reporting, Matthew Backhouse of APNZ.

Big crowd rocks out The organisers of the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare say this year’s event was the perfect blend of business and entertainment. Early feedback from stall holders was that the 2013 event was the most successful yet and it was also visited by a record crowd estimated to be between 3000 and 4000. Richmond Unlimited chairman Steve Page says a younger crowd was well behaved with only the “odd minor incident”. “We did notice a huge increase in the amount of kids and I don’t know what the answer to that is to be truthful.” Steve admits heavy metal covers band Repeat Offenders probably appealed more to the young audience but says they came into their own as the night wore on. “It probably wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but at the end of the night they

It took a lot of searching, but these former marching girls have proved to be the final pieces of the puzzle that Eleanor Duncan has spent the last year trying to solve. It all came together for Eleanor earlier this month, who held a reunion for the Tamerlanes, a 1950s Nelson champion marching group who had since lost touch. After an article published in the Waimea Weekly in September last year missing members were encouraged to come forward and the team managed to track down the final 29 Tamerlanes marchers to join in the celebration. Eleanor says attendees at the reunion came from near and far to be at the event, with some travelling from Auckland, Hamilton, Waikanae and Timaru as well as 17 more who were still living under the radar in the Nelson region. While she says it was a lengthy process finding contact details for the missing members, the positive reaction she received from each person when they were found was encouraging and gave her and co-organiser Ruth Parker the push they needed to see the project through. “We found people through talking to many people, someone who knew someone who knew something

The last person on our list was only found two weeks ago and she was very pleased and surprised to be found.” The Tamerlanes spent the weekend reminiscing and while a leisure marching display was cancelled due to wet weather, Eleanor says the weekend was extremely satisfying.
“It was great fun becoming reacquainted with women we knew more than 50 years ago, thank goodness for the name tags.” After a farewell coffee on Sunday, the local ex marchers vowed to get together in the future at least once a year and keep in contact with those who live elsewhere says Eleanor.

200 walk for water
The Walk for Water will become an annual event with organisers praising “a very good turnout”. More than 200 people took part in the 15km walk from Richmond to Rabbit Island on Sunday morning, although some participants chose to bike or run as they ventured through the latest segment of the Great Taste Cycle Trail. The event was organised by the Nelson-based Water for Prosperity charity which is fundraising money to supply two African towns with water bores because they do not have clean running water. Charity spokesperson Matt McDowell says the walk was a success and praised the publicity by event sponsor Waimea Weekly. “They all loved it. Everyone was raving about it,” he says. “A few people had been on the cycle trail before but everyone enjoyed it.” The event raised a total of $4792.70 which was “an amazing achievement”, says Matt. He thanked the fundraising efforts of everyone that took part or supported the event and was grateful to those who made significant contributions including some individuals that raised more than $400 each. “It was a really good effort from some people and there were quite a few big sponsor form totals,” he says.

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club While the endless summer carries on with long hot days and not much wind making it awesome fishing weather. The water in Tasman Bay is very hot at over 20 degrees with lots of albacore tuna now being caught all over the bay in 40 metres of water. The kingfish are still in massive numbers around the Boulder Bank and Motueka spat farms with the spearos getting the bigger ones by hand picking them. Land based fishing is also doing well with Kina Beach, Mapua and the Back Beach producing some good pannie snapper. Kenepuru has finally started to fire with some good double digit fish getting landed now for those putting the hard yards in. Only a couple of months of the fishing season left so if you haven’t been out to get a tuna now is the time as the water will start to cool off from now on. This will also see the snapper start to move out deeper and the kingfish start to leave the bay. It also means the big kingfish and snapper will turn up around D’Urville Island in the next couple
of months and hopefully give us as good a season as we had last year. With the amount of feed that’s been around this year I would not be surprised if it’s a very good winter fishing Kayak fishing in the region has been great this past month with big work ups from kahawai adding to the sport and the thrill on the yaks. Plenty of great sized snapper between 3 and 5kg still about and being caught. The kayaking numbers are increasing and we counted ten in the bay this past weekend. It is especially good to see some younger people getting in to it with their parents. With amazing weather still with us there is still plenty of time for getting out there and try your luck. The forecast for Easter is looking pretty good at this stage with maybe the odd shower if it comes to that. The settled weather looks set to continue for a while yet, so get amongst those fish in Tasman Bay as there will be no better opportunity, than that of a long weekend.

Seasonal change draws shoppers With winter looming, Richmond Mall is buzzing with shoppers from all over Nelson being drawn in by the change of season fashion says mall manager David Hill. He says the mall is noticeably busier, with each retailer beginning to unpack new ranges of winter woolies, with stock already going out the door despite the longer than usual summer Nelson has experienced. “Now is a very good time of year to be shopping at the Richmond Mall, there’s new products in every store and already people are grabbing the latest look fashion that has come in for the
change of season.” He says customers should also get in quick to make the most of summer sale items that stores still have limited stock in. “I would get in quick to grab a bargain, there’s some great end of summer specials on offer.” Customers can also be in with a chance to win big next month as the Richmond Mall is giving away $1000 worth of vouchers each week for the month of April. Shop at the Richmond Mall and drop your entry into one of the entry boxes in the Richmond Mall.

Last week the big dry affecting most of New Zealand was mercifully broken with the arrival of long overdue rain. Not enough to really help the farmers, but sufficient to bring new life to parched lawns and gardens in our towns and cities. Almost overnight brown lifeless lawns returned to their original sparkling green. An amazing transformation from death to life, bringing hope to some who thought they may be faced with planting a new lawn in the autumn. To me this dramatic change of fortune is symbolic of the Easter event which members of the Christian faith will celebrate this weekend. I invite you to reflect on that story too while enjoying the holiday with family and friends and partaking of Easter eggs and hot cross buns. For the Easter story is one which is so relevant and applicable to real life as we confront it with all its ups and downs on a daily basis. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection affirms God’s love for humanity, and highlights a central truth: that there is always the possibility for new life to arise from the ashes of human frailty, suffering and injustice. The pain and despair of loss, so keenly felt by Jesus’ followers on Good Friday, was replaced three days later by an awareness that the spirit of this courageous and compassionate man was not dead and buried, but still present and active among them. This was enough to transform their shattered lives, to give frightened doubting people renewed hope and direction for the future. That Easter good news story is a timeless message of encouragement when life turns to custard. We catch glimpses of it as Christchurch begins its slow recovery; we see it in our local communities whenever people respond out of compassion to assist people in need. In life there will always be disappointments, knockbacks; we don’t always get what we want in spite of our best efforts. That’s life. But the challenge for us is to still have the faith to live as Easter people, to maintain a positive attitude, a quiet optimism, in spite of the uncertainties and injustices we live with, and to be bearers of Easter hope and love to those who have doubts and fears about themselves and their world. Then the truth of Easter will really come alive, and the holiness of this special holiday be a gift and a blessing for us all.

Heavy trucks granted access on city streets Trucking companies will be able to operate more efficiently now that Nelson City Council has allowed heavier vehicles to carry full loads on city streets. As a result, it should also reduce the amount of trucks on approved roads by 23 per cent, according to the Nelson Regional Transport Committee, and Glenn Heybourn of Stuart Bryant Transport says it is welcome news. “It definitely benefits us because it will reduce truck movement with more weight so there’s more productivity. It’s a benefit to everyone really,” he says. “If you had a high productivity motor vehicle that was doing four loads a day, well now we can do that in three loads a day.” There are two types of HPMV: over length and higher mass. The New Zealand Transport Agency gives permission for both to operate on state highways while local authorities are responsible for approving higher mass trucks on its routes. Our accident rate is about twice that of Australia and almost six times that of the UK. If we managed health and safety as well as in the UK, 83 fewer people would die each year. Why is performance in New Zealand so poor? David Lyttle believes that most people: do not believe that all accidents are preventable; completely underestimate the effect a serious accident will have on their business; see health and safety as important but not urgent; do not put sufficient time and effort in to managing safety. The benefits of an effective health and safety management system include keeping people safe, complying with the law, meeting clients’ health and safety expectations and preventing severe disruption to your business. Securo systems have been proven over many years and are equally suitable for a one or two person business to a larger employer needing to gain ACC accreditation. If you are ready to take health and safety seriously then call David Lyttle at Securo to discuss your needs.

Celebrate Easter
Are you fit for Good Friday Reverend Martin Harrison While eating a hot cross bun the other day I was asked if I was fit for Good Friday. I immediately felt guilty because who can eat just one scrumpous hot cross bun. It is so good you can buy them anytime of the year. After all I don’t know why they have always been associated with Easter. But back to the question am I fit? Well yes I’m not doing too bad for a person that is slipping past the middle age, I do a bit of walking and other types of exercise. I’m better than most, I think. But is this what the person means as I eat my calorie laden snack? Am I fit for Good Friday? What is good

WE’D LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE
Friday really - other than the first day of a long holiday weekend? Good Friday is used by Christians to remember the Death of Jesus. So what is “Good” about it? What the Jewish authorities and Romans did to Jesus was definitely not good (see Matthew chapters 26-27). However, something good came out of it. The results of Christ’s death are very good! Jesus death was a demonstration of just how much God loves us and how far he was willing to go to show it. The Bible says; Romans 5:8, 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 1st Peter 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit. Jesus prepared for this moment all his life. Not only by the way he prayed but also by the way he lived his life. Perhaps the question am I fit for Good Friday could mean “Do I have a healthy Spiritual life?” I’m not sure. But I am going with others on Good Friday morning to an event organized by the local churches. Together we will celebrate and think about the significance of Good Friday. It’s a walk starting at 11am from the Methodist church in Wensley Road to the Anglican Church on the hill, pausing for reflection on the way. Why not join in and not only exercise your physical body but also your brain and spirit. And come to think of it, Hot cross buns are tied into Easter. The cross on the top

Celebrate Easter
because of the impact of this man in the mere 33 years he had on this earth. In Christian churches around this region we recognise that our sinful nature separates us from the close relationship we were intended to have with God. Nothing we can do as a “good” person can change this. But the amazing news is that God didn’t leave you and I in that place with no hope and no options. He sent his son Jesus to teach us how to live (as recorded in the bible) and then Jesus paid for your sins and for my sins by dying on the cross, taking the punishment that you and I deserved. Just when it seemed like it was all over, three days later, Jesus then rose from the dead. In doing so he broke the power of sin and death, proving he is the Son of God and made a way for you to know God if you will ask Jesus to forgive your sins and become the centre of your life. You were created for this. The journey of life has its ups and downs but in the midst of this God is knocking on your heart and asking if you will let Him come in. This Easter why don’t you come to Richmond New Life or another great Christian church near you and find out more about this celebration called Easter where Jesus died for you that your life would be radically and positively changed for eternity. Celebrate Hope this Easter Everyone could use a little hope, no matter who you are there is hope to be had for absolutely everybody. Easter offers us the assurance that the many difficulties and challenges that threaten to overwhelm us can be overcome. It can be hard to keep going on with the daily struggles of life, but whether it’s hope to succeed, hope for our family members or hope to
get through a tough time, hope is out there for all of us to take a hold of. Annesbrook Church are celebrating the message of Jesus and the hope he brings us this Easter Sunday with a special event that is not to be missed. People from all over Nelson are experiencing a church that is unique in everything they do. Annesbrook is a vibrant, exciting and dynamic church in the heart of Nelson that people leave feeling uplifted and can’t believe that what they have experienced is church. Annesbrook Church has grown into a large vibrant community of people who are passionate about spreading the truth and love of Jesus and alongside the different services and workshops available, it’s the people from all walks of life who attend that continue to empower and inspire each other. Graham Heslop, associate pastor at Annesbrook says, “When you go to church you shouldn’t leave feeling beat up. Jesus was never about that. In fact, whatever He did, whatever He said, it left people lifted, larger and more in touch with life”. Annesbrook Church are excited to offer a contemporary environment for all people, both young and old to spread the hope of Jesus. There is never a dull moment and the use of music, multimedia and fun are all part of the experience. Whether you go to church or not, do not miss the Easter service at 10am this Sunday at Annesbrook Church. We can’t reveal all, but let’s just say you will not be disappointed. Head in early with the family and grab a seat, enjoy the free hot cross buns and reach out and grab the hope that there is to be had. There will also be an Easter service held at 5pm this Sunday night, with elements from the morning’s service along with a free pizza shout. You can find Annesbrook Church this Easter Sunday at 10am, 40 Saxton Rd, Stoke, Nelson.

Speedway season finishes in Nelson Speedway continues to soar in Nelson with driver performances, crowd numbers and money through the gate all up on previous years. The Nelson season came to a close with the War of the Wings on Saturday night and when reflecting on the past few months, president Kris Carpenter says it was one of the best yet. “Our volunteer base is awesome and it just seems to roll from one year to the next,” she says. “We just want to make sure we’re putting on a show that is worth $15
so people come back.” Kris, who is stepping down from her role after three years, says the season was highlighted by the New Zealand Superstock Championship. Results on and off the track aided the club significantly with Dale McKenzie and Thomas Stanaway making the podium in front of a capacity crowd. “We’re a little club and we’re putting out some good champions. Their performances were definitely a highlight.” An announcement on the new president is expected in early June.

Families enter four hour relay A mountain bike relay race aimed at family participation was held at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Run by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, the largest of its kind in the country, the 4 For Four event saw competitors in 15 teams of four loop a simple trail four hours. The trail took approximately 15 minutes to complete and consisted of 50 per cent gravel road and 50 per cent single track through the bush. Organiser Wayne Pool, who came up with the idea after noticing a father and son
racing together at a previous event, was thrilled with how it turned out. “I was really happy, I got a lot of great feedback and everyone had a good time,” he says. “There is no other event that people can collectively do as a family.” While some families were competitive, Wayne says most people were “just out having fun.” The winning team, Well Ballanced, completed 20 laps in the four hours, one lap ahead of the runners up. The race will become an annual event.

Big round one win for Wanderers Phillip Rollo
Wanderers Wolves will enjoy the Easter break on top of the TRL standings after a comfortable 48-8 win against new boys Victory Phoenix Vikings on Saturday. Team manager Michelle Welsh says the Wolves were wanting to start the season strong, picking up where it left off at the end of 2012. “Absolutely. We’ve got new management and new coaching staff so it’s a pretty perfect way to bring it all together,” she says. With the entire league developing significantly each season, teams need to make sure they aren’t left behind and Michelle was confident the side would continue to
be competitive despite new players making up 40 per cent of the squad. “We’ve got a lot of guys that have never played before but luckily they came at the start of preseason and have picked it up really well and really quickly.” After the bye the Wolves will take on the Tahunanui Tigers, who surprised defending champions the Richmond Rabbits 30-28 on the weekend. “We know it’s going to be a tough game but it will be a good one as well. We just need to work on things each week and get better as we go.” The Stoke Cobras defeated the Wairau Taniwha 32-18 in the round’s other match. All games were played in Tahunanui.
