Shooting and stabbing rocks 2 communities

SLAM DUNK: Emma Flanagan, 9, of Richmond gets a helping hand from Fico Finance Nelson Giants basketballer Darryl Dora while the team were shooting hoops in the Richmond Mall last week as part of a school holiday promotion. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

A deadly shooting and a brutal stabbing just days apart has rocked the Tasman district says its mayor Richard Kempthorne. The long weekend turned into tragedy for a Richmond family, and came close for another soon after. Richmond man Ian Boyd critically shot his son Brendon Boyd, who was visiting from Christchurch, at a house in Tadmor Valley on Thursday evening. Several hours later, and after an intense police man hunt, Ian shot himself dead in a Dry Weather Rd driveway. And in a separate incident early on Sunday morning, a 22 year-old Richmond man was stabbed in the head, face, throat and shoulders. The victim, who was known to police, was stabbed outside the police station on Queen St at about 12.30am. His injuries were not life threatening and he was discharged from hospital the same day. In Tadmor, the estranged father and son were apparently trying to work things out. But things took a drastic turn for the worse just after 11pm

on Thursday. Brendon went to visit his father at the family property in the Tapawera area but left before talking to him. Ian followed his son and a dispute occurred on the side of the road a short time later, where Ian broke one of his son’s teeth, say police. Brendon then drove off and went to the property where he was staying. Some time later his father turned up at the address and shot him at close range in the chest. Paramedics and the armed offenders squad were flown to the scene from Nelson and Brendon was flown to Nelson Hospital and then on to Wellington Hospital for treatment. After seeing a police cordon Ian drove into the driveway of a former church in the Tadmor Valley at 3.30am and three shots were heard. “The man suffered fatal self inflicted wounds to the body and face and a shot gun and high powered rifle were recovered,” says Tasman District Commander, Superintendent Gary Knowles.

Twin tragedies rock communities

NEWS IN BRIEF • The community development fund is to enable the Tasman District’s smaller communities to make plans, provide activities, run events or services to enhance their town or to attract visitors. The fund has an allocation of $20,000 for the 2010/2011 year. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2011.

FROM PAGE 1 Police say it appeared that Ian had “just snapped” as a result of the altercation. Meanwhile police were just as busy on Easter Sunday after a quick response from the public helped police charge a 28 year-old man for stabbing another man in Richmond. The victim was walking along the street on crutches and was accompanied by a woman when the attack occurred. The attacker has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. “I’d like to thank the public for coming forward so quickly and also the business owners who have made video footage available to us,” says Detective Pat Nally. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthrone says the two events, just days apart, will have a big impact on the communities of Tapawera and Richmond. “The shooting is a sad event and it is concerning when these events happen in our district. We need to support the police and take ownership for what happens here. It’s important we look out for each other.”

Hundreds observe ANZAC Day in Waimea

Anzac Day services were well attended around the district, says a delighted Richmond Waimea RSA president, Terry Richardson. Bad weather around the country impacted on the general service turnout, but in true Nelson style the rain stayed away. At 9am Brightwater held a service outside the gates of the town hall and saw around 50 people come to pay their respects to those who have served the country. Richmond RSA say more than 1000 people turned out to the Richmond service in Memorial

Park at 10am. The Richmond Districts Pipe Band led the returned service men and women into the park and the Waimea College brass band accompanied the hymns. An excellent speech was made by former Richmond man and now Air Commodore Steve Moore. Terry says he appreciates those who generously gave money last week towards Poppy Day. “The figure could be a bit down on last year because we’ve had tragedies like the Christchurch earthquake and the Pike River mine disaster, but Nelson people have still given generously.”

All White wedding Jeremy Brockie has starred on the worlds biggest stages without nerves getting to him, but on a secluded hill in Golden Bay he was a mess. The Olympic and world cup All White had planned the moment he was going to propose to girlfriend Jess Passmore, then when he pulled out the box, the ring was missing. Fortunately Jess was facing the other way and Jeremy was able to quickly snap it shut before she saw. “I was just thinking, ‘oh god, I hope it’s in my pocket, I hope it’s in my pocket’.” It was, and second time around Jeremy was able to bend down on his knee and extend the ring. Jess says she burst into tears. “I didn’t actually hear him, but I said of course. I was shaking and crying, I was so happy.” Jeremy, a former Richmond Athletic footballer, is back in Nelson for a month during his off-season

from his A-League football club, Newcastle Jets. The pair met in Townsville, Jess’ home town, when Jeremy was playing for the North Queensland Fury. This trip to Nelson is Jess’ first since they began seeing each other 18 months ago. Jeremy says he started thinking of how he was going to propose while in China with the All Whites and settled on horse trekking in Golden Bay. He did it during a break on the trek, overlooking the bay. They say they are still weighing up where the wedding will be next year but Townsville and Nelson are the two options. While back in town Jeremy also took part in a coaching clinic at Jubilee Park, orgainised by his childhood club, Richmond Athletic. Jeremy is now an ambassador for the club and regulary visits when back in town.

Easter fair celebrated despite mud Teresa Hattan From hot donuts and coffee to arts and crafts and the ferris wheel, the Mapua Easter Fair once again had something for everyone. Despite the temperamental weather conditions on Sunday, hundreds traipsed through the boggy Mapua Domain in search of something to keep dry or warm. Wakefield mother and daughter duo Ella, 11, and Jane Binskin were spotted trying on hats, telling the Waimea Weekly they were having a great day despite the conditions. Several local stall holders made the trek over the hills for the popular Easter fair, with many saying it was great to see so many braving the

damp and cold to support the event. The final decision on whether the fair would go ahead was made at 5am on Sunday. In its 29 years, the fair has never been cancelled and has been postponed only twice, so the organising committee decided to go with their gut instinct. Of the 340 stallholders, around 10 percent didn’t show up. At an estimate based on gate takings, around 8,000-10,000 people braved the weather conditions to attend the annual Easter fair this year, slightly down on the 15,000 expected. However, it is thought around $25,000 to $30,000 was raised for the Mapua School and Mapua Playcentre.

Tasman police out in force over Easter Close to 600 speeding tickets were issued over the Easter weekend, including for one driver who was clocked at 144 kilometres an hour. Tasman Police were out in force on the roads over Easter weekend, with the strong presence seeing no fatalities and no serious injury accidents over the holiday period. Police across Tasman District, which covers all of Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast, breath tested more than 5000 drivers. Fourteen were found to have excess breath alcohol, with the highest reading being 1035mcg. Just over 830 traffic infringement notices were issued, along with 588 speeding tickets. Six people also had their vehicles impounded. The speed camera also had a busy weekend and processed 1050 photos of speeding drivers. Tasman District Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson says while she was pleased the district had no fatalities, the fact that her road policing staff had issued 1420 infringement notices showed people were still not getting the message about the danger of speeding and drink driving.“This is a huge amount of offending for our district over a four-day period. Local police also apprehended a well-known offender for possession of cannabis for supply, possession of cannabis resin for supply, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and possession of a knife. “I want to acknowledge the great work done by all of my road policing staff this weekend. I am extremely pleased with their professional attitudes and commitment to keeping our roads safe.”

Business update Put Your Best Foot Forward This Winter! If you suffer from cracked heels, corns, ingrown toenails, calluses or dead skin – it’s nice to know that there is someone who can take care of them all. Eniko (Anni) Fekete is a European Chiropodist and Beautician, trained in Budapest and with 17 years experience. Anni can have your feet looking and feeling great. ‘Cracked heels, corns and ingrown toenails can look unsightly and cause considerable pain, and if not treated, can sometimes lead to infection. ‘I specialise in relieving the painful symptoms, treat the underlying problems and make your feet look great, ready for those summer sandals,’ Anni Eniko Fekete promises Anni. ‘I use a warm foot bath and specialised products that will make your treatments less like a clinical procedure and more like a pampering session. I concentrate on callus and dead skin removal until the soles of your feet are entirely smooth, corn and ingrown nail removal, nail and cuticle care, followed by massage and topped off with your favourite nail colour.’ Reflexology is another area Anni is passionate about. This treatment works on the whole body so that all of the interrelated parts function together in harmony. In particular reflexology can help with concentration, lower back pain, bowel disorders, digestive difficulties, sore throats, help boost self confidence, help you breathe easier, increases heart and liver function and can improve fertility. Anni offers all of the treatments you would expect from a beautician – facials, waxing, eyelash tints, manicures and pedicures. Particularly popular is the Galvanic non-surgical face-lift. It helps to lift, tone and firm ageing facial tissue with low frequency settings to allow stimulation of the epidermis, improving the appearance, condition and texture of the skin. Anni operates from Fitness Zone in McIndoe Place, Richmond. Call to arrange a consultation and take advantage of her Mothers Day specials.

Lower Queen St in the 1930s Teresa Hattan Progress in Richmond has come along in leaps and bounds over the past 80 years, as can be seen by the photo below. The photo was taken by the brother of local man Henry Haycock some time in the 1930s opposite where the pine forest factory is today. “We owned the farm, Ashfield, right opposite and that photo was taken by my brother in the 30s, I think around 1933. We were supplying milk to the first milk treatment station in Nelson, who were selling off bottled milk,” says Henry. One day Henry’s brother stopped and looked up the road to spot the Hammond’s cows turning into the paddock right opposite the farm’s entrance, so he took a photo of them from out of the milk van. “You can see right up and what the main street was in those days.” Roland Hammond, who was the son of Mr Colin Hammond who bought the property that was part of the Ashfield Estate which was formerly owned by John Wallis Barnicoat. Barnicoat was a surveyor who worked on the Waimea Plains, the Motueka area and the site for Dunedin city. “He took up the land in 1843. I think that [Dunedin] was his last survey before he took on the property in Lower Queen St.” Henry’s grandfather bought the 80 acres on the other side of the Ashfield Estate. The name of Ashfield came about in the 1800s. Henry believes Barnicoat said to Mr Hammond ‘I’m going to plant an Ash tree and it’s going to be right in the middle of this acre beside the house and we’re going to call the property Ashfield.’ The Haycocks bought Ashfield Estate in 1903 when the estate was sold up. Henry says his grandfather purchased the 80 acres, but he could’ve bought more. “But Mr Colin Walter Hammond was Barnicoat’s farm manager so he bought it.” Henry’s father bought the farm from his brother in 1925,

learn more about the industry by visiting a number of farms on the same day to look at what different breeders are doing. Alpacas are native to South America and have been bred in New Zealand since 1987 with approx 17,000 alpacas currently grazing the country. Alpacas can be successfully farmed on small lifestyle blocks (one acre will support

five or six animals) or farmed in conjunction with other livestock on larger farms and require little maintenance. If you are considering starting your own herd or just want to see an alpaca up close, visit one of the farms featured in this ad between 9am and 4pm. You can be sure of a warm welcome and reliable advice from an experienced alpaca owner. Adv.

FOOTBALL ACADEMY: All White and former local boy Jeremy Brockie with just some of the young people at the Jeremy Brockie Academy April Holiday Football Camp held at Jubilee Park last Wednesday. Jeremy and Richmond Athletic players Joe Green, Jordan Yong, Ben Wright and Sam Mason-Smith spent last week coaching 100 of the area’s future football stars. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Athlete has high hopes for games Phillip Rollo One of Nelson's most promising track and field talents just completed an athletics season of fivestar quality. Richmond Athletics star Bailey Cotton, 12, beat the level five standard, of the Colgate Star Awards system, in every one of the nine events he competed in throughout the summer. Bailey's talents are even more impressive considering the versatility he has shown, excelling in a variety of different disciplines.

TOP ATHLETE: Richmond Athletics star Bailey Cotton, 12, hopes to perform well at the South Island Colgate Games next season. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

He sprinted the 100 metres in just 13.7 seconds, jumped 4.52m in long jump, threw 9.68m in shot put and ran 800m in an impressive 2.29 minutes. “I was real proud. It's the best I've ever done,” he says. Bailey started track and field when he was five years-old but noticed his talents after setting Richmond Athletics records, for his age, three years later. He has since won three gold medals at the South Island Colgate games in 100m, 800m and shot put, along with a silver medal in the relay. One battle Bailey had to overcome this season was a false start in the 200m sprint at the Tasman Centre championship. He was disqualified from the race, although other competitors who false started in their races were allowed to remain in their lane. The disqualification meant he was one event short on available points to become the overall meet champion. But despite the disqualification, he still accumulated enough points to take the title. “The guy who disqualified me didn't think I could stay up the top.” He even got some encouraging words from his idol, Alex Jordan. “He just said 'chin up' and that it had happened to him before.” Bailey plans to continue athletics for as long as he can, he's just unsure which event he will favour. His rugby career is also a big focus. He was a member of three Nelson Bays representative sides last year and has regularly being playing in rep sides one year his senior. With the announcement that the South Island Colgate Games will be held at Saxton Oval next season, Bailey is targeting “records and gold medals” at the event on his home soil. Bailey is still weighing up whether to attend Nayland College or Waimea College for 2012.

Back-to-back titles at Easter champs for midget driver Teresa Hattan Gaining back-to-back Barry Butterworth midget titles has only been done twice before, but local man Nick Marquet managed to do it over the weekend despite terrible conditions for the Easter speedway championships. Two days of action had to be crammed into one for the rather damp Easter Championships at Nelson Speedway over the weekend. Canning the event altogether was not an option for organisers, as the championships saw a number of drivers travel from the North Island to compete, so Sunday went ahead with around 30 of the 43 races completed. Nick says racing on Sunday was pretty tough but he was happy to come away with a placing, ensuring he held on to the title. The midget driver is following in his father’s footsteps, who is also one of the back to back title holders.

Winning the title last year was great for Nick, especially as it was his first year racing. “We had a pretty good run this year, we basically only had to finish three races, we had enough on the second placed guy, and I think we finished about eight points clear in the end.” Nick finished ahead of Dave Kerr from Christchurch, who is four time South Island champion, proving consistency is key in speedway racing. “It’s always pretty good coming up against him, he’s probably the best driver in the South Island, he just had one race in Christchurch he didn’t finish where as we finished all the races for the series.” Over the series Nick finished second in the first and second rounds and then third on Sunday at the Easter champs to retain the Barry Butterworth title. Nick and his father Leigh, who owns the car, will be looking at heading back to the track next season with the hope of hanging on to the trophy for another year. “We’ll have another crack at it.”

Waimea Old Boys 2011

www.wobrfc.co.nz

Waimea robbed in Good Friday clash The Stables Waimea Old Boys Senior A clash against Nelson came down to the wire over the long weekend, but a missed knock off by the officals handed the visitors the win, scoring a last gasp try in the left hand corner. With the two Nelson rugby heavyweights trading leads, spectators and Waimea supporters at Jubilee Park on Friday witnessed some top quality rugby, despite the one point loss a bitter pill for Waimea fans. After Waimea led at half time, the second half saw each team edge into the front a number of times. After a try to Nelson, Waimea hit back with a try and penalty kick to lead the match by four with just minutes remaining. SMASH ‘EM: Waimea lock Greg Monk Even though the result wasn’t as planned, coach Mark Milne says he was happy with takes on the Nelson defence.

the play, especially the attack but was less glowing about his sides defensive efforts, saying it will be a focus at training this week. “I wasn’t too happy with defence; the boys left too many holes and dropped tackles. Defence is about attitude, we need to take ownership when it comes our way,” says Mark. The boys will be putting systems in place so slips like this don’t happen again. “We were also on the wrong end of the penalty count, we were pretty heavily penalised, but that does happen.” A positive for the boys however, were their set piece. A top performance was put in my Ben Eder, who has moved from a football background to rugby. “He was a first half substitution as wing. In training and early season games he was

in the loose forwards but he went on as a winger on Friday and played well,” says Mark. Waimea were also boosted with the return of Makos halfback Kaide Whiting, which allowed Phil Gibson to return to first five and Andrew Lethan to move from pivot to his perferred fullback role. This Saturday Stables Waimea Old Boys take on Stoke at Greenmeadows. “It will be a tough assignment; Stoke will be hoping to turn around the result from the last round when we beat them at home but we need to beat them.” Try scorers on Saturday were Todd Bavin and James Lowe. The squad will lose number six Brent McKenzie for a couple of weeks after he suffered a “smashed up” nose. Kick off is at 3pm.

Water consent holders are reminded that the requirement for water meter returns runs until Monday 2 May 2011. Daryl Page, Compliance Officer at Tasman District Council, advises that if you cease water use before 2 May 2011 you must tell Council so that the reading on the day you cease your take can be used as your final reading for the season. Only then can the requirement for further returns be removed. Returns are required by 4.00 pm on Wednesdays. Missing or late returns may result in Council staff reading the meter at a cost to the consent holder of $195.00. Council takes this opportunity to thank those consent holders who make their returns on time. Accurate and timely water meter returns are key components of the water metering project.
