A Stoke grandmother is relieved her young grandson has been taken away from the boys’ mother and says “we are not sending him back to that crap” following serious concerns for the boys’ safety and well-being. The grandmother approached the Waimea Weekly last Wednesday desperate to get her nine-year-
old grandson away from the boy’s mother and her partner who had been living in a “disgusting” faeces-ridden flat in Richmond. The grandmother, who does not wish to be named, says she has been worried about her grandson’s well-being for some time and had contacted Child Youth and Family (CYF) about the
situation. Although she says the Richmond flat was disgusting, with rubbish, human faeces and drug paraphernalia throughout the house, she claims CYF failed to do anything to help. But this week the grandmother’s family took the initiative when they went to her grandson’s new home in Nelson and removed the
boy. She says they have contacted their lawyer and are hoping to obtain a court order to gain permanent custody of the boy. “The grandfather went around to see my grandson at this new place which CYF says is okay but that has nine people squashed in,” she says. “My grandson was really upset and she [the mother]
Helicopter’s leading lady recognised Simon Bloomberg Eighty-eight Valley’s Robyn Reid will be the latest person inducted into Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame, recognising achievements in a wide range of business sectors including over 30 years in the aviation industry. Robyn has been in the headlines in the last few years after she and her husband Bill completed a 10-year-long restoration of a classic 1936 Avro Anson Mk1 warplane in Nelson. But Robyn’s career in aviation started long before that and ultimately led to key roles in a wide range of business and community groups. Robyn started her involvement in aviation after meeting a young helicopter pilot named Bill Reid in Nelson in 1979. The couple

and we needed to get into commercial work. Deer recovery was a pioneering industry and of course with any pioneering industry the stakes were high. Consequently there were many helicopter accidents in those days.
“Bill had been flying for his father’s company prior to us starting our own business and he always had a really good approach to safety. I think that helped us implement good safety procedures for our business too and that led to my involvement with

She has also been a member of the Civil Aviation Authority and the NZ Aviation Security Board, the chair of the CAA audit committee, Helicopter Division of Aviation Industry Association and Top of the South Aviation Cluster while interest in vintage aircraft led to her appointment as a trustee and director of Warbirds Over Wanaka Ltd. Robyn says she is “really proud” of winning the inaugural directors award for safety in an industry that demands extremely high standards. “It was for a commitment to improve safety in aviation which is an industry that demands excellence. said “yes, this is fine send him back” but our lawyer has said “no don’t send him back” so hopefully we’ll get a court order through today saying we’ll get custody. “We are not backing out now. We are not sending him back to that crap. No kid deserves that.” CYF spokesperson Helen Aiken says they had conducted an assessment of the boy’s family but acknowledged on Tuesday that they had got it wrong and she apologised on the agency’s behalf. “While Child, Youth and Family was involved in an assessment of this family we have not done a good enough job. “The photos prove our assessment has been poor. I apologise for that.” Helen says CYF workers had since visited the family in their new residence and would con-

good enough - if 95 per cent of the landings are successful and five percent are not the industry wouldn’t survive.” Interestingly, after more than 30 years in aviation, and living with a house full of pilots, Robyn has never flown, deciding instead to focus on the ground-based aspects of the business. “Bill is a pilot and our son Toby and daughter-in-law fly helicopters but I don’t fly. I decided that if I flew as well then I’d be telling Bill what to do all the time instead of half time - he did the flying and I ran the business so we clearly knew our roles.” Robyn worked hard to acquire the necessary skills to run their business, studying part-time for Certificate in Quality Assurance at NMIT. She also gained a Diploma in Quality Assurance and

a Certificate in Business Studies and continues to study for a Bachelor of Business Studies studying extramurally through Massey University. And it was those qualifications that helped lead to a number of key appointments outside aviation, including one of her favourites as the inaugural chair of the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency from 2003 to 2010. Robyn says she is “very humbled” by her induction into the Hall of Fame although insists “there are a lot of people that deserve this far more than I do”. “Sometimes you just go about your daily routine and you don’t realise you are helping people so it’s nice to be recognised for that. It’s also an honour to be included in the Hall of Fame alongside so many influential businessmen and women.”

EXPLORE Feeling the cold? Wendy Pearson
Maitai School’s Emily Smith, left, and Jane Wills give the bubble-tube in the new sensory room a trial run on Monday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
New sights, sounds and smells Simon Bloomberg Maitai School students will benefit from an innovative new classroom designed to help them control their sensory environment to create a better space for learning. After four years of planning and development, the Nelson special needs school opened its new Wahi Tairongo, or sensory room, on Tuesday. The hitech room allows students to control the sounds, sights and smells they experience, which principal Jane Wills says has a big impact on their ability to learn. “Many of our students have difficulty making sense of the
things they are experiencing and that can be overwhelming,” Jane says. “Being able to control what they hear, see and feel can help them calm down so they can benefit from more effective classroom learning.” Jane says the sensory room will also be able to help stimulate those students who have difficulty recognising senses. “They might play upbeat music or watch a colourful visual experience and that can help them learn.” The school’s occupational therapist Emily Smith will be showing staff how to use the room which includes a massage chair, colourful bubble tube, audio-visual equipment

Life Education founder steps down Andrew Board Since it was established 14 years ago, Nelson’s Life Education Trust and its memorable mascot Harold the Giraffe, has passed its message of health and respect to thousands of Nelson and Tasman children. And the man who started it all is now calling time on his stint with the trust. In 2002, bank manager Chris Buckley was working at Westpac in Nelson. The bank was a national sponsor of Life Education Trust, but the trust wasn’t set up in the top of the south. It was then that Chris’s boss at the time tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he wanted to get it off the ground. “I thought ‘cheers for that, not that I have enough to do’. But when you understand what it’s all about and the success that it’s actually had - it teaches kids that we’re all special - I was happy to be involved.” The initial tasks included raising the profile, setting up the trust, raising money,
finding suitable trustees and employing an educator. The trust hosted golf tournaments, cooked barbecues and knocked on doors for sponsorship, but Chris says the support of a business couple set the trust on the path to success. “We were very fortunate that we had a benefactor early on, Roy and Renate Savage. Both were from Nelson and went on to have very successful business careers in New Zealand and Australia. They had a synergy with Nelson and it was a concept close to them. They were very, very good to us and effectively helped us get the mobile classroom.” Another key to the trust’s success was the quality of their educators, says Chris. “We’ve been blessed with the calibre of educators that we’ve had. Michelle Andrews was the first one and she was brilliant, absolutely brilliant, and really helped us make a success of it, but all of the educators since have been equally as good. They are
Founding chair of the Nelson Life Education Trust, Chris Buckland, outside the trust's mobile classroom. Photo: Andrew Board. special people.” Chris’s involvement hasn’t just been as the chair or trustee, he also took the opportunity to wear the Harold suit and was able to see up-close the impact that the trust was having on local kids. “When you see the mobile
classroom full of kids, there is an excitement there. They listen and they all want to ask questions. You see the excitement and the pleasure that they get out of it.” But after 14 years Chris says it’s time for him to step off the board and let the “younger generation” take
it forward. Current chair of the trust, Michelle Fitzgerald, says Chris has left a huge mark. “He’s made such a massive contribution. He’s just been fantastic. He’s been a great representative and we’re sad that he’s leaving, but we also know that he’ll be
there to help us out if we need him.” In summing up his time with the trust, Chris says he was “stoked and proud” to leave the trust on a high and will always take an interest in the trust’s work. “Once you’ve been in the system you can’t kick it out.”

Tasman district’s rivers feature in film
Simon Bloomberg
The “beauty and diversity” as well as the dark side of Tasman district’s streams and rivers will feature in a new documentary designed to “inspire” people to look after our waterways. Our Waters In Common, which has been commissioned by the Tasman District Council and filmed and produced by Nelson company Maze Audio-Visual, will premier in Richmond next month. The documentary cov-
ers a wide range of topics based around the council’s extensive research on streams and rivers around the district. Council resource scientist Trevor James says the documentary film features “a cast of 35” landowners, scientists and community group members and presents an “honest discussion” of the state of the district’s streams and rivers. Although Our Waters In Common was commissioned by the council, Trevor says council staff have a “reasonably low profile” in
CLEAN SLATE IN LIQUOR OPERATION: A joint-controlled purchase operation, run by police, District Licencing agencies and Public Health, was held last Friday. The operation targeted both on and off-licensed premises in the Nelson-Tasman region. A total of 19 licensed premises were visited by 15 and 16 year old volunteers. None of the premises visited sold alcohol to the volunteers. “The controlled-purchase operations are carried out to check processes and ensure compliance with the law by licensed premises. There will be further Controlled Purchase Operations held periodically over the coming months, all licenced premises are reminded to be vigilant. A good result for us is when we have no sales are made to our volunteers” senior sergeant John Price says. “
the film. “It’s the community speaking and there’s a lot of honest discussion. We haven’t censored them too much - we are not shying away from the issues. “The films starts off by showing the important values of our rivers and in most rivers those values are being maintained. The only problem we have is that our urban streams and smaller lowland streams in a pastoral landscape are in a pretty bad state.” Although Trevor says council,
landowners and community and environmental groups have been working to improve the state of the district’s waterways, there is still a way to go. “There are some great community projects going on around our rivers but we want to increase the rate and scale of that work. So that’s the biggest objective of the film - to inspire the community to look after our waterways. “But the beauty and diversity of the district’s rivers shines through and the stories of so many good

Amidst the uproar following the announcement that the Education Minister is proposing to close Salisbury School, Nelson’s Emma Thompson has begun a petition to save it. Emma says what Salisbury wants is a .co.nz The car that flipped upside down in proper discussion about how keeping .co.nz it open, and changing its focus slightly, Wakefield on Friday.

Spooners Tunnel closed: Just three months after its opening, the Spooners Tunnel has been closed to the public. The Spooners Tunnel is temporarily closed to the public to allow structural improvements to be carried out at the northern tunnel entrance. Council Engineering Services manager Peter Thomson says the tunnel was closed to the public last Wednesday after a routine inspection. “Unfortunately, with a tunnel that is 125 years old, some maintenance issues are to be expected,” says Peter. “Spooners Tunnel has experienced a significant change in use since it was opened to cyclists and walkers as part of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail and that, combined with heavy rain over the past few weeks, may have had an effect as well.” The tunnel will be closed for two weeks.

Harris Builders nail top awards The Nelson Marlborough West Coast Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards were tinged with sadness after Harris Builders stole the show, winning five awards including the Supreme House of the Year. One of Nelson’s most respected and award-winning builders, John Harris died suddenly in May this year, aged 53. John’s wife Jo accepted the award on behalf of her late husband, adding a sombre note to Saturdays gala dinner at the Rutherford Hotel. “He was an amazing builder who was known for his quality workmanship, so this year’s awards were very emotional,”
Nelson Registered Master Builders president Paul Brockie says. “But we were all glad Jo could come along – John would have been very proud of her for getting up there and accepting the award.” Harris Builders won five regional awards for a Nelson home it constructed in a vineyard. The home won the Supreme House of the Year, a Gold Award, New Home Over $2 million Award, the Craftsmanship Award and the Outdoor Living Award. Nelson company Jennian Homes Nelson Bays Limited also won four awards. Jason Gardiner Builders Limited won two awards for two Nel-
son homes to take home Gold in the Nulook new home $650,000-$1 million category and silver for the Carters New Home $1-2 million category. Nelson-based company Hybrid Homes won the sustainable home award for the lifestyle category and also took home the silver award for Nulook new home $650,000-$1 million category. J Lewis Building won the gold and category awards for the future-proof Building New Home $500-$650,000. The gold award winners will now compete against winners from around the country at the national awards in Auckland on November 26.

Lydia’s Market Comment We are very busy at Bayleys and I have personally concluded a large number of rural and rural lifestyle property sales over the last three months. Demand for rural and lifestyle property is high, especially for small holdings within 30 minutes of Richmond. People definitely have an increased awareness of the need to take care of
themselves, and in particular to know what they are eating, and how best to be healthy and happy. More and more people are wanting to return to the “Good Life”, find a place of their own where they have room to grow their own veggies and fruit. Demand for these types of properties is high and I have buyers waiting for suitable properties to come on the market.
List your property with Lydia before 31 Sept and go in a draw to win $5000 worth of travel vouchers.
If you are thinking of making a move and would like to know the market value of your property then please give me a call. I am very happy to provide you with reliable and confidential information. It is just a call away.

Former props ready for big push to Fight 4 Victory Andrew Board When two former Nelson Bays rugby props face-off at Fight 4 Victory this November it is highly likely that both will finish the fight as winners. Pouesi Fitisemanu and Joni Nacagilevu both made their sporting careers on being big men. Both played in the front row for Nelson Bays but both say they are now too big and need to lose some weight. They are hoping that training for the charity boxing event on November 5 will motivate them to lose that extra weight and make them healthier. In fact, not only are their goals from the fight similar, so too are their journeys to it. Pouesi moved to Nelson in the early 90s after a mate in Auckland announced he was heading to play rugby in the Top of the South. Pouesi asked if the club, which turned out to be Riwaka, needed a prop. They did, so Pouesi packed up the HQ Holden, drove south and began playing his rugby for Riwaka. Not long after he met the publican’s daughter and found himself quite happy to stay put. “It was perfect, bach, a boat and a good woman,” he laughs.
He went on to play for Nelson Bays from 1992 to 1996, before playing in Australia and then for Auckland in the NPC in the late 90s. A major knee injury ended his playing days, leaving the big prop “frustrated and angry with sport”. “It took about two years of actually hating sport. My whole life revolved around rugby, I lived it and breathed it. To have that taken away was frustrating and I probably had a little bit of anger there. Back then, rugby for me was like a release valve too. I suppose, a young islander, you get to the weekend and blow it all out and you start each week fresh.” Without rugby, Pouesi focused on family and raising his two daughters, but as the exercise stopped the weight piled on. “When you have a good wife who cooks well and I suppose it’s in our makeup, food is comforting. When I was stressed it was easy to turn to a pie or a sausage roll. Fight 4 Victory is a chance to change that.” “I was at the last Fight 4 Victory and I was sitting with my wife and said ‘that’s me’. I think it was the next day that I texted Paul [Hampton] and said I was keen. My daughters never saw me play rugby and there was no social media like today, so there

This is a chance to show them that dad isn’t just a couch potato.” For Joni, the motivations to take part, and the route to Fight 4 Victory, are almost identical. Joni played 1st XV rugby for Nelson College, played senior rugby in Christchurch before coming home and lacing up for Marist. In 2000, his club form led to selection for Nelson Bays and Joni played four seasons for the Griffins before hanging up his boots for eight years. “When my girls were born I just stopped playing, keeping an eye on the family and that. After a few years of not playing I just slowly started piling on the

weight. From being really involved with rugby to nothing, it got to the point where I could feel my knees wanting to pop from the weight. Doing up shoe laces was also hard.” Like Pouesi, his kids hadn’t seen dad play rugby until this year when he was asked by his old club to come and play Bs. “I turn up, play a solid 20 minutes and that’s me,” he jokes. “It has been good to be back out there, but hard.” Joni’s mother recently passed away and he says that, and his growing waistline, convinced him to take up the Fight 4 Victory challenge. “I’m probably carrying an extra
40-50 kilos. That’s why I’m keen to give it a go.” Both men said they weren’t nervous about competing in front of a big crowd. “It’s more the rules,” says Pouesi. “Like, can I put my tongue in his ear? Us front rowers have got a few tricks up our sleeves,” he jokes. Joni says, while they’ll both be doing everything they can to win, ultimately they’ll be helping each other. “It’s a life-changing event really, either keep on going, same old thing or do something different. Doing this, we’ll be helping each other. “This is our first step for the rest of our health journey and for me that’s the biggest prize.” Victory Boxing programme coordinator Paul Hampton says there could still be another fight or two added to the November 5 card, which raises money for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. Nineteen fighters from the ten confirmed bouts were unveiled to 200 invited guests at Bowater Hyundai in Nelson for the traditional After the Bell event earlier this month. General admission tickets for Fight 4 Victory 3 are now for sale from ticketdirect.co.nz or the Theatre Royal.

e l p o e p d o o f h s e Y ou r f r Ann Holmes of the Nelson Classic Ford Club will be among those celebrating Henry Ford’s birthday at Rabbit Island this weekend with her 1964 Ford Falcon. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Ford owners celebrate founder’s birthday They come in all shapes and sizes and this Sunday, Nelson Classic Ford Club vehicles and owners will hold their annual cruise out to Rabbit Island to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. Born on July 30, 1863, Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company, a name that has become synonymous with reliability. Whether it’s a Model T or a brand new Ford with the latest vehicle technology, everyone is welcome to attend the birthday celebrations that generally attract around 100 cars. Ann Holmes recently joined the club after purchasing a 1964 Ford Falcon, prior to that, she and her husband Dave had been members of the Model A club. In fact, with their new addition, Ann says they have a Ford car from just about every decade except the 1950s. “We’ve got lots of Ford’s, it’s just easy to get parts and repair them and, with the Ford Falcon in particular, it’s a car I remember from my childhood, that’s the attraction I think.”
Selwyn and Noreen Hannah will also be there on the day with their 1965 Mark 3 Zephyr 6. Selwyn’s first Zephyr is still on the property, it sits by the side of the house but is in no fit state to drive after it was wiped out by a truck in central Auckland, a particularly devastating accident for Selwyn who had put a lot of money into achieving its mint condition. Selwyn and Noreen originally started owning Ford’s as they made great family cars, always capable of towing the caravan on family holidays. Having owned over 50 cars since 1968, Selwyn has had experience with a number of different vehicles, including a dabble in Holden, but has always returned to the tried and trusted Ford. Sunday’s event will be a great opportunity to view some of best Fords in the Nelson region. There will also be a sausage sizzle and, of course, a birthday cake. Once the cars are set up, the public will be able to view them from about 11am.

Hello Brightwater, Members of the Brightwater Community Association met on Monday 4 July for their Annual General Meeting and as a result, we have a new committee, all bright eyed and bushy tailed, and ready to head into the next 12 month term. Elected were: Pat Lithgow – Chairperson; Sally Symonds – Vice Chairperson; Andy McQueen – Treasurer; Barry Inglis – Secretary. The objects of the Brightwater Community Association include: fostering interest in the community; encouraging discussion on all matters relevant to the community and its residents; acting as a channel for communication with TDC and with other statutory or interested organisations and collecting and disseminating on matters of interest or concern to the community. Over past years we have been involved in many projects around Brightwater.
These include the construction of the BMX track which is a fantastic community asset; the painting of the mural and the resurrection of the Village Green. The Community Association is also heavily involved in running the annual Anzac Service. This year Charlie Taylor helped out by donating a new flagpole and it is hoped that by next year there will be a new memorial stone with an updated and complete list of those from our district who fought for their country and did not return home. Work on the Village Green is an ongoing project and now that the community association have been given title to some of the area, creating a low maintenance and user friendly space that is available for all to enjoy is something we are looking forward to. We are also looking at revamping a few public garden areas around town, and creating a

150 year anniversary Have you noticed the lovely white wooden church along Waimea West - St Michael’s church, (the one with the funny shaped trees)? The first wooden church was opened in 1843 in Waimea West, but it later needed substantial repairs so a new church was planned. The foundation stone of the current St Michael’s Church was laid on 24th November, 1866, 150 years ago. To celebrate this milestone there will be a 150th anniversary service on Sunday 27 November, 2016 with the Bishop of Nelson, The Right Reverend V. Richard Ellena, in attendance. We welcome you to be part of this
service to help us celebrate, particularly if you have family connections with St Michael’s or have been married in this lovely church. Following the service there will be a light lunch at Tea Pot Valley Camp. If you would like to be part of these celebrations or want further information, please email: brightwaterchurch2@ gmail.com or Pauline Coy paulinebc@gmail. com. For the history of St Michael’s please see http://www.waimeanelsonanglican.org.nz/st-michaelschurch.html With Blessings from St Michael’s Church

In the rush of modern day life, people often don’t have the time to think about why they should, and where they can shop local, as opposed to shopping online or from a national chain store. Most of us, it’s safe to say, are driven by price and convenience. But if you do happen to have a minute to ponder the pros of supporting local businesses, here are a few reasons to start you off. One of the major benefits of shopping local, of course, is the money cycle. When money is spent locally and passes through many local hands, more people are able to benefit from it. It’s not always important how much money the community actually has but how much of it can remain in circulation locally before being leaked out. When you choose to shop with a local retailer, they in turn spend their money locally, paying staff, signage and design company’s, paying for maintenance from local businesses for their office or company cars, spend-

cially, but in person too, giving up their time to coach sports teams, and often using their businesses to do good for local causes, such as allowing people to run sausage sizzles outside their store as a fundraising activity. In fact there are examples all over Richmond of local businesses giving back to the
community on a daily basis. Local retailers bring something special to where we live - they give the community a unique flavour. While every town or city around New Zealand has its chain restaurants, grocery stores and department stores, it’s those one-of-a-kind shops businesses,

often less than the jobs displaced when there becomes less demand for the services of small, local businesses. Nowadays we are constantly bombarded with thousands of corporate advertisements telling us that cheapness is important above all else, leading us to overlook the values that independent businesses provide us, both personally and in our community. If you’ve ever dealt with a large company, you will know that getting help can sometimes be a nightmare, from the moment you dial that 0800 number, to the irritating music you’re forced to listen to as you’re transferred from one person to the next. Local businesses often have a far more personal and efficient approach because the people who make the decisions, being the owner or the manager, are on hand during business operation. The expertise, product
knowledge and quality of the products you’re purchasing can also be far better at a smaller, locally owned business, because they don’t have the backup of a national chain. They have to stand by their products and keep their customers happy so that they can pay their bills. If you’ve ever started your own business, and even if you haven’t, you can appreciate the amount of time, hard work and commitment that goes into not only bringing a business to life, but keeping it operating. Yet many people bypass their local shops, assuming they will be more expensive than the chain stores, without thinking about the effect it is having on the small business person. There are also many locally owned retailers within the community that people need to remember are part of a national retail group, but are owned by local franchisees.

There are of course occasions when you have to shop with a big box retailer to get exactly what you’re after, and local businesses know they can’t just expect your custom, they have to provide, within reason, the best deal they can arrange for you. Whether you’re doing the weekly groceries, organising a trades person or looking for Christmas or birthday gifts, buying products and services is a part of daily life, but before you pull up outside your nearest big box retailer or national service provider, take some time to check out the great range and quality products your local business owners have to offer first. Don’t think you’re too small to make a difference, every purchase you make with a local retailer is a step towards a better community economy and a Keeping it local is important for a number of reasons, including supporting busiunique identity for the town nesses that give back to the community, maintaining a unique town and keeping a strong money cycle within the local area that everyone can benefit from. we live in. Jacob Page Wanderers prop Drew Petelo watched last year’s Nelson Bays division one rugby final with a dislocated shoulder - this year he scored two tries to help his team repeat history. Wanderers beat Marist 19-17 in a tense final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. The top qualifiers overcame an early 10-0 deficit thanks to their loose head prop who scored the team’s first and last tries of the game. “I feel like if you paid to see that final, you got your money’s worth,” Drew says. “I don’t have anything left in the tank - I’m out on my feet, but it feels so good.” Drew says sitting on the sidelines for almost all of last season thanks to a shoulder injury made the win sweet. “To be on the sidelines last year wasn’t a great feeling but this group of men worked hard and we deserved it.” The forwards had to go with seven men for 10 minutes before halftime. Their goal line was under constant threat, but they held firm.
“We just said to each other that everyone has to dig deep and that’s what happened. It’s nothing new to us.” Captain Jesse Pitman described the game as entertaining. “We never felt like we were on the back-foot, we believed we always had enough points in us,”Jesse says. “It’s much more satisfying to win it this year. Last year it felt like a relief to finally win it after being in two finals with Waimea and coming up short. It feels like we proved a point.” He said he was delighted for Drew to have a performance like he produced. “Drew is the kind of team mate you want. “You turn up for training and he’s out there doing his broncos, he puts in the work and thoroughly deserves it. “I hope he gets picked up for (Tasman) Griffins - I’m sure he will, he’s a top bloke.” In other finals, Marist scored a late try to beat Motueka High School 2725 in the women’s final while top division two team all season, Collingwood, confirmed their dominance with a 15-8 win over Riwaka.

Federal won the semi-final in Blenheim 3-1 to earn their spot in the decider and record their first win against Aotea Kiwi this season.
Their reward is a showdown with Tasman who proved too strong for a faltering Stoke side 6-1 in Nelson. Federal have also not beaten Tasman this season. Tasman coach Tim Kerr was delighted with the effort of his team to bounce back after a heavy 5-2 loss to Federal Titans the previous week, “The guys all went away and worked on their individual skills

Piper earns medals, breaks records in the pool Jacob Page Tasman swimmer Piper Riley came home with eight medals in a recordbreaking performance at the Canterbury West Coast short course championships in Christchurch on the weekend. The Waimea Intermediate pupil won three golds and five silvers. She gained victory in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle. She also broke her own Nelson-Marlborough agegroup records in the process, having just broken the 100m freestyle record. She did all that while beating swimmers two years older than her. No distance short or long seems to phase Piper who is currently the fastest 1500m swimmer for her age in New Zealand. Piper says she remembers learning to swim at age three, but it was her first experience at squad swimming that stands out. “I remember just being chucked into a pool and being told I was going to swim 1500m right then. “I remember doing it and thinking when is this going to be over because my arms hurt. I had no idea how far that was in terms of length
so I just kept going.” Piper sneaks into the 13-year-old age group by just eight days for the national championships later this year and is targeting a medal under swim coach Andy Adair. To achieve that, she will continue to get up at 4am five days a week to come to training from Motueka at the Richmond Aquatic Centre. Piper has read plenty on former and current Kiwi swimmers Danyon Loader and Sophie Pascoe and hopes to one day be an Olympian herself. “I like the challenge and it’s a mental game,” Piper says about swimming. “I also like to travel and meet lots of people.” She says she enjoys training with Andy along with the rest of the morning squad. “Andy’s doing the breaststroke during the races so he’s right into it like he’s racing with you, t h a t’s cool.”

Clayton and Josh rule on home motocross track Clayton Roeske and Josh Coppins were the best of the Nelson riders at the Nelson Motocross Championships at 88 Valley over the weekend. While Saturday’s weather held, the overnight downpour made for tricky racing conditions on Sunday, which meant the competition was cut a race short. Clayton, from Nelson, finished second in the junior feature Dash for Cash to Dunedin’s Grayson Veitch in what was a gripping two-rider shootout. The lead changed three times in one lap before Grayson won. The experience of Josh saw him win the senior Dash for

Cash as well as win every senior MX I event. Clayton dominated the 125cc 15 and 16-year-old class while Marshall Phillips from Christchurch won the 12 to 14-year-old 125cc class. Nelson’s Madi Berry was on the podium for the women’s racing for the weekend, while Nelson’s Luke Heaphy won the mini races. Race organiser Bryan Heaphy says all the riders did a fantastic job given the conditions on the Sunday. “It’s very tricky in weather like
that and after so much rain to be consistent with your speed, but some of the lap times were terrific. “We had to change some things around in terms of the course as it was quite boggy and wet in parts, but I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Bryan says more than 140 riders competed in 13 race categories, including several current and former national champions keen to test themselves on the redesigned track. The next major event will be the Top of the South Secondary Schools Motocross Championships at the same venue on August 21.
