Linda Kenney, Wakefield. “It looks lovely, I like the idea of wider footpaths and benches out there to sit down. As an outsider, I come in to Richmond to get the groceries and it always looks pretty.”

Brian Payne, Richmond. “I’m definitely happy with it, it’ll be awesome with the more pedestrian-friendly streets.”

Rochelle Steer, Richmond. “Yep it looks fine, you can really see the difference between the new road level and the rest of Queen St. It will definitely be good should we get another downpour of rain.”

Allan Hawes, Richmond. “It looks pretty good to me, so much better than before. It’s more pedestrian-friendly which I think will improve the shopping.”

Vandals out of control FROM PAGE 1 improvements are required. “We want to make it easier for people to contact us and planning has begun to develop a single, non-emergency phone number,” says Mat. However, Nelson police constable Brett Kindley says they have now completed an investigation of the crime scene and will be “working hard” to catch the offenders. Brett says the burglary “fits with” similar burglaries around the region where “prepared” thieves have targeted industrial or rural sheds and lock-ups. Brett says it was a bad weekend for Richmond and Stoke with “around eight or nine” residential burglaries reported.

The weekend’s burglary continues a horror run for the club with the wet weather resulting in race days being cancelled which impacts on their income and ability to pay rent and track maintenance. In addition to this weekend’s races, Mark says the club was looking forward to hosting the national event for only the second-time ever in November. While the club has funds set aside to have the track ready for the nationals, unfortunately it looks like they will have to use that money on replacement equipment. Treasurer Kerry Martin is hoping that someone might have seen or know something and will contact the police with information.

“We’d love to get everything back,” he says. “The generator was on a silver, custommade frame with bright pink wheels, so it’s hard to miss, and the water pump is nearly brand-new.” However, it’s not all bad news with one of the club’s sponsors, Nelson TV and Video, stepping up to donate a PA system. Workshop manager Alan Simpson says, “we just wanted to continue our support for the club and to help out as best we could. We donated the original PA system so wanted to replace it for them.” Kerry says he is delighted with the offer and is hoping that other offers of help might be forthcoming so that they can shift their focus back to preparing for

Nick back for Nelson after rough campaign Simon Bloomberg Nelson MP Nick Smith knows politics can sometimes be a dirty business but says the personal abuse and threats directed at his family made this year’s general election campaign his “roughest” in almost 30 years in national politics. Nick was elected as Nelson’s MP for the eighth consecutive time on Saturday, winning 14,966 votes to beat Labour’s Rachel Boyack on 10,956 and Greens Matt Lawrey on 8324. Although Nick says Nelson voters are “generally very respectful” he had a torrid time this year with a protestor throwing rat poison at him and an offensive effigy of him squatting over a glass being displayed next to his caravan near the Nelson Market. However, Nick says the thing that “rattled” him during this election campaign was the “personal animosity directed at my children as well as personal threats made against me and my family”. “I know my occupation is my choice and the reality is that there is some impact on my family but I do feel it deeply when it impacts on my kids,”

Power cut A power cut last Wednesday, September 20, was caused by equipment failure at the Transpower Stoke Substation and resulted in 12,800 homes in the Richmond, Brightwater, Mapua and north Nelson losing power. The outage occurred at 2.55pm with power restored to all customers by 3.50pm. Forestry lucrative Tasman District Council-owned forests produced a surplus of $5.89million after a record year production of approximately 42,000 tonnes of logs. The return to council is $2.36million before internal dividends and transfers, including transferring $300,000 to the Mapua Precinct project. Council is also considering using the forestry surplus to fund part of the Waimea Dam project capital costs. Tapawera School reunion Tapawera Area School is holding its 75th reunion this weekend starting with registration and photos and a function in the school hall on Friday. An opening ceremony, bus tours and speeches will be held at the school on Saturday followed by a dinner at Club Waimea in the evening. The school was opened on May 29, 1942, by the then Minister of Education, Henry Mason. Revealing film The Wakefield Anglican Worship Centre is showing a documentary film The True Cost which pulls back the curtain on the global fashion industry. It asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing and was filmed all over the world, from the runways to sweat shops. The film will be screened free of charge on Sunday October 1 from 7pm.

Community heroes to be rewarded Simon Bloomberg

The team at Stihl Shop Richmond is so impressed with the number of people doing great things around our district that they wanted to offer a monthly award to recognise their contribution to the community. So, Stihl Shop Richmond’s Grant Blanchet approached the Waimea Weekly about the idea and we jumped at the chance to help reward our community heroes. The Stihl Shop Richmond Good Sorts Award will be handed out every month starting at the end of September with the winner receiving a $100 voucher to spend at the Stihl Shop on Gladstone Rd. “There are so many good people in the community who give us their time or do something to help out,” Grant says. “They can be anyone from sports coaches to volunteers in the local community group or someone who does a good turn for someone in need. “These are the people who make out community tick. We depend on them and they’re one of the reasons why this is such a great place to live, so we wanted to do something to recognise their contributions.” Grant says people can nominate any-

Pilots: Fees now sky high

Nelson general aviation operator Alan Caudwell in his hangar that he built, but which sits on land he leases from Nelson Airport. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Brittany Spencer Private operator Alan Caudwell is set to take to the seas not the skies, after having his wings clipped by high landing fees and hangar landlease prices at Nelson Airport. The retired aircraft operator and engineer is one of the private operators based at the Nelson Airport and has been flying for 59 years. His two RVs, Mustang, and his L39 jet are all housed in a 450 square metre hangar which he built himself on land he is leading from the airport. Leasing the land that his hangar sits on cost $9128 per year before the 77 per cent increase in March that now sees him paying $16,100. Nelson private operator and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s Ian Andrews says Nelson is a pretty good airport but they need to look after general aviation. “Profit is fine but it’s got to be realistic and I think they’ve pushed it a bit far,” says Ian. “Nobody expects anything for nothing but we’ve got a bit of land sitting on a swamp and we are paying huge rates per square metre for it.” But Nelson Airport chief executive officer Rob Evans says the increases are due to a three year review and is in line with land price increases in the region. “We have independent reviews of our land valuations every three years or so and adjust rentals in line with movements in the market.” Ian says that on top of hangar rates the landing charges have also increased. The Nelson Airport landing charge for Ian’s 3000 pound Piper Dakota is $17.68. In 2015, Ian flew a larger, 4000 pound Piper Malibu and was only charged $11.50 each time he touched down. From land-lease rates to landing charges, Alan says that private operators are being hammered. “I’ve done my numbers and I can’t afford to continue at this rate. I’m going to have to sell up the whole lot and go boating instead or something.” Alan says he’ll be sad to sell his planes but “aviation is just getting too expensive to be a weekend thing”. But like the lease fees, Rob says the airport’s landing fee increase is simply a function of a five year cycle and the airport has offered general aviation operators a discount to these charges which has been welcomed by most operators. “I think they should pay the equivalent of any operator using the airport services. Would you think it is fair that the taxpayers of Nelson and Tasman support aviation ‘hobbyists’?” Rob says the airport is still receiving plenty of interest from general aviation operators. “We are receiving enquires on a regular basis from existing and new businesses for hangar space. In particular in the tourist flights, executive jets and engineering training.”

Kristin Paterson was 26 years old with a toddler and a new born baby when she received her diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. While her friends were meeting to discuss babies, she was struggling to come to grips with cancer and what it meant for her and her young family. “I was really struck with the isolation of it all. I was home too sick to engage with people and increasingly I struggled to relate to my friends and family,” she says. “When I went to my first chemo treatment I was probably 25 years younger than anyone else in the room.” “I found there was really nothing for people my age. It was a pretty lonely feeling at a time when I really needed a lot of support.” Kristin says that the key is be-

ing able to connect to, and relate with, other people. While there are universal struggles for people with cancer, there are also unique struggles depending on your age and stage of life. “It’s about having a peer group that you can relate to.” In response to this need, in 2013 Kristin founded the Whole Lotta Life Foundation. The Foundation provides a nationwide support network for people with cancer aged 20 to 45, with regional meetups, retreats and online connections. Late last year, Kristin made a connection with Tribe founder Caron Proctor. Tribe is a business networking group that Caron founded in 2016 to provide mentoring, support and connections for women in business. “I was so blown away by Kristin’s story and really understood the need that the Foundation was filling, so I just

wanted to be able to help,” says Caron. “Tribe is about not being alone and so is Whole Lotta Life, so I think there’s such a great synergy, and I thought that we could help to shine a light on the cause.” So, a group of Tribe members have used their skills and networks to create the ‘Shine your light’ fund-raiser which is being held at the Granary this Saturday. Promising a fun night, there’s music, entertainment, cash bar, canapes, a “Men Den”, indoor games, dancing, and a silent auction with great items from Jens Hansen, Oxygen Skincare, Kimi Ora Resort and Marama Vineyard. Thursday’s fund-raiser for Nelson charity Walk With Us has attracted some great items for its silent auction, including a week’s free motorhome rental from Hope company Discover NZ. The charity fund-raiser will be held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms on Gladstone Rd this Thursday starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are still available for $20 at the Richmond Mall, Nelson Weekly, Stirling Sports Nelson and Whitwells in Motueka. Discover NZ owner Tony Terrell is pictured in one of their motorhomes. Judene Edgar The Murchison A&P Show is a celebration of the area’s rural history and a fun-filled family day, but unless the committee gets an injection of fresh blood it is feared that there may not be a 98th show next year. Committee member Sue Cooper says there is a strong possibility that next year’s show, currently scheduled for February 17, will be cancelled. “I think people think it will be alright, but we’ve got to the stage that if we don’t have a general secretary by October 3, that we simply won’t be able to put on the show,” she says. An equestrian secretary is already in place and the committee are hoping to be able to share some of the other responsibilities previously done by the secretary. “Traditionally the secretary has been one big job and it probably scares people off, but we’ve divided the role up to try and make it more manageable,” says Sue. While they have had a lot of offers to help set up on the day, the secretary role is a critical one that “ties everything together”, and the Show can’t go on unless someone steps up. “We know people love the Show and last year was fantastic with the return of sheep shearing and wood chopping, as well as the ever-popular equestrian section and terrier racing, and we’d really like to be able to reach 100 years,” says Sue. “It would be such a big loss to the community to not have the show.” Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact Sue Cooper ph. 027 755 9411, Diane James ph. 523 9345 or Colette Barrow ph. 027 528 7063.

Something old, something new Judene Edgar

Got some news? Ph 544 9037

Seeing a dream come true for a family member and a love of “warm fuzzies” is all the motivation Tania Smith needed to take on her ‘pay it forward’ venture, wedding dresses for loan and hire. Paying it forward is based on the concept of doing good deeds for others, with the only condition being that they find an opportunity to do a good deed for someone else at another stage, hence continuing the cycle of good deeds. Tania’s good deed is providing wedding dresses for people who can’t afford, or don’t have time, to get a dress of their own. “A relative of mine had two weeks to plan her wedding because her fiancé had terminal cancer, so she put it out there to see who could help her and was blown away by the response,” says Tania.

The service has been running through the pay it forward Facebook page, but Tania wants to extend it and make it more publicly available. In the six weeks since she took on the role, she has been busy washing, steaming, mending and refreshing the dresses. “Wearing a beautiful dress and feeling beautiful on your wedding day can be very important, and this should be available to anyone,” she says. Tania has a range of wedding, bridesmaid, flower girl and mother-of-thebride dresses but is keen to get more to give people more choices. She’s also keen to extend her range of accessories including gloves, handbags, tiaras, veils and shoes. “Really it’s anything that helps the bride to look and feel beautiful and special on their day.” Unfortunately, some of the dresses have not been re-

turned in the past, so Tania charges a modest deposit of $100 with the hope that this will encourage people to return them. However, she refunds half of the deposit and, to honour her family and founder of the concept, she donates the other half to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. A florist by trade, Tania willingly provides her wealth of experience in wedding planning as part of the service and works with the bride to find the right dress and get the right fit. “I love weddings and the warm fuzzies you get assisting someone who may not be able to afford it otherwise.” Anyone interested in donating any of their wedding clothes or accessories, or looking for an affordable dress can contact Tania through her Facebook page by searching ‘wedding dress loan and hire’.

A fresh taste for a fresh start Judene Edgar A fresh start on Queen St is being marked with some fresh foods, live entertainment and cultural activities as part of ‘The First Taste’. To celebrate the “fresh new look” of Queen St following the completion of stage two of the construction works, the street is going to be transformed into a multicultural experience with street foods from around the globe. Queen St businesses will be setting up stalls on the street with foods from Turkey, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and, of course, lots of fresh local flavours. Poppy Thai owner Pobsak Srithong says it should be a fun day with lots of good food and entertainment. “People can come and try our traditional Thai barbecue,” he says. Richmond Unlimited committee member and Wooden Spoon café owner Nicola Woodbury says that they were definitely keen to be part of it and are looking forward to it. “We want to have some fun with it and make it a fresh start,” she says.

“It’s a great opportunity to build our business community and build our sense of community as well.” Waimea College bands RELM and Deadbeat Express will be providing entertainment, and council community partnerships officer Lani Evans says there will also be a range of cultural performances and activities, including Chinese and Bhutanese music and dancing, flax weaving and henna body art. Utilising the new pedestrianfriendly space, Lani says there will be tables and chairs available so that people can sit and enjoy the entertainment while sampling some of the foods on offer. “It’s going to be a real celebration and an opportunity for people to check out the fresh new street layout,” Lani says. Richmond Unlimited coordinator Charlotte Bidlake says she’s delighted at how many businesses have “jumped at the opportunity”. The First Taste is October 14, 11am to 2pm on Queen St, between McIndoe Pl and Cambridge St.

Henley pupils experience cultural diversity

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Henley School pupils are already living in a culturally diverse society with more than 16 ethnic groups represented at the school and last week they celebrated that diversity at a multi-cultural day. The school has been studying cultural diversity this term and as part of those studies enjoyed some hands-on experience of around 10 different cultures. Pupils watched a Japanese puppet group, Thai dancers and the school kapa haka group perform, listened to a refuge family from Bhutan tell their story about their journey to Nelson and then sampled ethnic cuisine from eight different countries. Year 4 pupil Emma Wilson says the entertainment and ethnic food were the highlights of an interesting day. “It was quite fun watching different types of puppets moving around - you could hardly tell there was someone controlling them,” Emma says. “There was a long line for churros, but it was totally worth it.” Teacher Hanna Baldwin says the multi-cultural day activities were a continuation of their studies which had already included skyping students at schools from China, Japan, Rarotonga and Hong Kong. A group of international students from Waimea College had also visited Henley to talk about their cultures. “Waimea international students had created ebooks about their cultures and showed them to the kids,” Hannah says. “They talked about all the things they did in their countries and how it was different here, so it was very interesting.” Pupils in the middle syndicate had also researched their ancestry “because everyone in New Zealand is an immigrant.” The studies continued last week and this week when the pupils visited a special multi-cultural display at the Nelson Provincial Museum which had been set-up just for Henley. The school’s multi-cultural day was sponsored by the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Skies clear for Hope School Country Fair The sun shone on the Hope School Country Fair for the first time in years and locals certainly made the most of it. People from as far as Atawhai descended on the school on Saturday, to make the most of the sunshine, activities, entertainment, and stalls. Organiser Sarah Whittle says she was absolutely thrilled with how the fair went. “It’s been amazing, there are lots of happy faces and this is the first time in years that it’s been dry all day, and we didn’t hear the sound of rain on the roof this morning which was just joyful.” Sarah says, each year the fair is a real team effort by the staff and families and this year was no different. “All the families have really come together to sort everything out, we had so many people down here on Friday to set up and spruce the school up.” Sarah says one of this year’s most popular stalls was the white elephant, with a signed rugby ball from All Black Beauden Barrett, a signed singlet from Olympic gold medalwinning kayaker Lisa Carrington, a family pass to Weta Workshop, photo shoots, canyoning adventures and cyclist George Bennett’s signed Lotto N L Jumbo jersey. The fair raised around $38,000 for the school.

Setting the stage Judene Edgar Reporter

judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It’s been a long time since Richmond Town Hall was the home of movies and theatre, but it’s set to make a comeback thanks to youth theatre and arts trust Live Arts Nelson. Currently in rehearsals for their latest production ‘Honk’, which is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Ugly Duckling”, the Live Arts team are also busy raising funds to help get stage lighting for the town hall. “Our goal is to make all facets of arts more accessible to the people in the Tasman district,” says trustee Sarah Pumphrey. Their most recent production, ‘The Surprising Story of the Three Little Pigs’ was held at the Motueka Memorial Hall in June with rehearsals at the Richmond

Town Hall, as most of the children performing live in the Richmond-Waimea area. But they are keen to be able to rehearse and perform in Richmond, and have their sights set on next April. Sarah says that they’re currently working with Sport Tasman, who manage the facility, and Tasman District Council to get stage lighting to enable performances to take place in Richmond, and have applied for funding to help make this happen. “We have some great facilities in Tasman such as the Motueka Memorial Hall and Richmond Town Hall, so it would be great to be able to utilise them more,” says Sarah. Their current production, ‘Honk’, is a high-energy musical comedy which tells the story of Ugly, the duckling who is born into ridicule and loneliness because he is different. It is a mixed cast of 25 youth providing an oppor-

tunity for some of the more experienced cast members to shine in lead roles, and for others to experience musical theatre for the very first time. Sarah says that one of their goals is to provide opportunities for people who’ve never been involved in art or the theatre before, and to give them a really positive experience. Seth Eastmond, who plays Drake, the father of Ugly, says he loves the singing, the dancing, and the acting. “It is all great fun and it’s such a great opportunity to be able to try all of it,” he says. “They’re the most awesome bunch of kids and it’s so rewarding seeing them grow in confidence,” says Sarah. The full-length musical is to be held at the Motueka Memorial Hall from October 4 to 8. Door sales will be available, but for a guaranteed seat tickets can be purchased online at www.eventfinda.co.nz.

Richmond School associate principal Donna Miles, centre, with some of the kapa haka group members. Photo: Judene Edgar.

Farewell to two great community leaders Judene Edgar The region is set to farewell two well-respected community leaders when Richmond School associate principal Donna Miles, and Nelson Police senior sergeant Shane Miles, head to Wellington at the end of the month to take up new challenges. Donna and Shane shifted to Nelson with their two young girls at the end of 2002 when Shane took up a section supervisor role. Donna secured a new entrant teaching position at Richmond School, coincidentally, the school they’d already chosen to send their girls to. “Richmond School was an easy choice for a job and for the girls,” says Donna. “We shifted to Nelson because we

wanted to bring our kids up in a positive, safe community, which we’ve achieved,” says Shane. But with one now training to be a teacher in Dunedin and the other heading to WelTec for special effects make-up artistry, Donna says it’s time for new challenges. Shane has accepted a role training the instructors at the Porirua Police College in firearms use and tactical training, and Donna is heading back into the classroom at Greenacres School “which is where my real passion is.” “I was so happy to get my new job but I’ve been here [Richmond School] one-third of my life, so leaving is really hard,” she says. Throughout her 15 years at Richmond School she’s turned her hand to nearly every role possible, from new entrant teacher

to syndicate leader, curriculum well as its highlights. As a memleader, behaviour management, ber of the negotiation team, Shane special needs, special abilities and has successfully managed to talk associate principal. But both have made a big impact in their respective roles and will be sorely missed. “Shane’s been a great leader and has contributed a lot to the community,” says Nelson Bays Area commander inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly. Richmond School principal Tim Brenton says, “Donna has been a real leader and will be a huge loss to the school. We’ve been fortunate to have her here this long.” “She’s always seen the glass as half full and that has facilitated the positive atmosphere here.” They will both miss Richmond, their work colleagues, sports clubs, and friends. But Donna says the best thing about Richmond is the children. “They’re the coolest kids and it’s such a fantastic community,” says Donna.

Come 'under the sea' these school holidays Kate Russell The Little Mermaid Junior is making a big splash in Nelson these school holidays. The Nelson Youth Theatre Company is bringing the Disney classic to the Theatre Royal from October 1 to 7. The production, based on the Hans Christian Andersen story, has been adapted from the 2008 Broadway musical and the 1989 film. Set in a magical underwater kingdom, the play follows the beautiful young mermaid Ariel, who longs to leave her ocean home for the world above. But she first has to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with evil sea witch Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl with the enchanting voice. Director Richard Carruthers says they have a cast of over 50, aged from five to 17, who have spent the last three months rehearsing. And because they have so much talent in the theatre

He says the hour-long show will appeal to a wide audience, from three-year-olds to teens, as well as adults who grew up watching the film. "It’s slick, fun, bouncy, happy, and colourful – everything

you’d expect from a Disney show, but on the stage," says Richard. "It is very family-friendly and moves very fast so children won’t get bored. There is lots of magic, underwater creatures, and all the costumes have been made by the parents." Audiences are also being encouraged to dress up as their favourite Little Mermaid character, and will also have the opportunity to come on stage afterwards and have their photo taken with the characters. "That will just add to the magic," says Richard. "It’s a great way for children to get a feel for youth theatre." The Little Mermaid Junior is on from October 1 to 7. Tickets are $17 for children, $25 for adults or $75 for a family of two adults and two children, with show times ranging from 1pm, 2pm and 7pm. Respecting the generations Judene Edgar Waimea youth councillors Mara Leyland and Tayla Shuker are welcoming a decision by Tasman District Council to appoint a youth advisor onto their community development committee, saying it’s important to respect the viewpoint of different generations. Last month council undertook a survey seeking feedback from young people and received 637 responses. The survey of predominantly 12 to 19 year olds, reveals that the friendly community, the great outdoors, and accessibility, were considered some of the best features of the Tasman district. Their major concerns included environmental sustainability, particularly single-use plastic bags, drug-taking, safety, and a lack of things for young people to do. “They identified a correlation between boredom and drug and alcohol use which was very insightful,” says Councillor Dana Wensley. While there was a marked

contrast between responses from urban and rural youth, particularly in relation to accessibility, safety and drug concerns, the number one request was for more activities, specifically targeted towards young people, and places to “hang out”. Mara and Taylah consider having a voice around the council table is about being part of the solution, rather than focussing on the problems. “It’s hard to find solutions in a survey format – solutions require talking and working together to find something that suits everyone,” Mara says. “It helps us to see what we, as a youth council, can do to support those changes and come up with solutions,” says Taylah. Both agree that youth getting a direct line of communication to council will be beneficial in increasing youth understanding of council as well as council’s understanding of youth. “You can assume and send surveys, but when you hear viewpoints first-hand, it makes it more real,” says Mara. “It’s about respecting each

generation and what they have to offer.” “A lot of youth are very informed,” says Taylah. “This is about affecting change in the future.” Dana agrees. “It’s their future, so it’s important to have that future-focussed perspective when planning, especially with inter-generational issues such as climate change, as it will only ever involve a longterm view.” “I was so impressed with their professionalism and valuable insights. It also shows that a lot of the concerns are the same regardless of age, such as safety, drug abuse and accessibility,” says Dana. Council community partnerships officer Lani Evans says that a lot of the solutions lie in working with other community groups and organisations such as Sport Tasman and CAYAD (Community Action on Youth and Drugs) to facilitate community-lead opportunities. However, finding opportunities to talk to youth more will be a big part of finding solutions also.

Win yourself a new garden with Wholesale Landscapes Wholesale Landscapes has a proud history of giving back to the community and they’re about to make another local very happy at this year’s Nelson Home and Garden show. Already they’ve run the Wholesale Wish promotion and given away four pallets of firewood to four worthy causes but this is the biggest give-away yet, a garden and landscape makeover worth $10,000. “The prize is going to include eve-

rything, there’ll be design consultation with the winner to see what it is that they might be after in a garden, then from there it’s all up to us to make sure everything’s completed to a high standard and that includes all the labour and materials,” says Wholesale Landscapes team member, Tom Filmer. The idea behind the prize is to “change somebody’s outlook for the better,” and that’s not just in terms of the garden they see out their win-

dow. A $10,000 garden and landscape makeover has the potential to raise the value of a property, by 10 per cent research shows, which could make a huge difference to people’s lives. There are also heaps of health benefits that come from having a natural greenspace. Not only will people be able to get active while tending their garden, there is also the opportunity to grow organic, healthy fruit and vegetables in the planned vegetable garden. This will be designed by local horticulturalist and author Bill Brett, who will also spend time with the winner, teaching them about how to plant out their vege garden and maintain it so it achieves a successful harvest. “Once we help them with this garden, they’ll be spending time in it with family, hopefully, learning about food and being active,” says Tom. “At the start of the month they may have a space they hardly use and our plan is that by the end of the project, they’ll have a space that they can enjoy with their family and friends.”

To enter in the draw for the $10,000 garden and landscape makeover, simply head along to the Nelson Home and Garden Show on Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30, or Sunday, October 1, fill in your details on the prize computers and the finalists will be drawn following the show. On Saturday, October 7, Wholesale Landscapes will be holding a prize draw event on site at 55 Saxton Rd, where the winner will be announced. There will also be spot prizes, gift bags, specials and promotional items up for grabs, and a sausage sizzle. When work gets underway on the garden, the team will be running a video series on their Facebook page so people can follow its progress and maybe get some tips for their own backyard. The Wholesale Landscapes team looks forward to seeing people at the Nelson Home and Garden Show this weekend and have lots of advice and information to offer those looking to make the most of their property.

many other community groups. It was a disappointment to see graffiti on the rear of the pillars of the Memorial Gates. Diane Drogemuller has worked hard to remove it, both from the gates and the Community Hall. There remain concerns over the Lightband Road, River Terrace Road and Ellis Street intersection. Traffic departing from Ellis Street into River Terrace Road, or turning right into Lightband Road must stop at the compulsory stop sign. Traffic leaving River Terrace Road have a Give Way sign. There is obviously confusion as near misses continue to occur. Drivers are driving as they used to, but fail to note the changes made. The onus will always be on the party leaving Ellis

Street i.e. through the compulsory stop. One thing the community as a whole will have to face up to is expansion within the area. Brightwater is a popular residential area and further building is mooted. This will put pressure on infrastructure: schools, roads, water, sewerage etc. The association endeavours to stay abreast of developments and works with TDC to see that any changes are to the benefit of the community. Our next meeting will be on October 2, at 7:30pm in the staff room at Brightwater School. Roger Ball of Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management will address us on any issues of concern to residents. All welcome.

Wine and food festival to stay in Brightwater Due to overwhelming public opinion, it was decided last week that the Nelson Wine and Food Festival will remain in Brightwater next year. It had been planned to move the event to the Richmond Showgrounds which offered potentially easier access and more shade. “We decided to keep the event in Brightwater pretty much straight after the feedback we got when we mooted the idea to shift it,” says organiser Kevin Gear. “So,

it was one of those things that sort of decided itself. We are now in the process of upgrading Middle Earth Vineyards from a shade point of view. We will also have a larger representation there from the Cancer Society who will have more gazebos and more sunscreen for those attending.” The date for next year’s Nelson Wine and Food Festival is Sunday, February 18, 2018, from 11am until 5pm.

New Show Home at 5 Fairose Drive,

New gun shop now open on Ellis St Brick by brick, Brightwater’s newest business has taken shape, and now owner Shane Kelly is welcoming gun enthusiasts through the doors of Kelly Country. “This started around five years ago when I was out here helping a mate and I saw the land. I’ve built Kelly Country over the last two and a half years in my weekends,” says Shane. “I was trying to create a store that was different from everything else, more focused on the shooter and reloader.” Although a passionate shooter, Shane’s background isn’t in gun shops. He’s worked in a local freezing works, spent time deep sea fishing, and currently works for the Nelson Marlborough DHB,

but it was his time in the military that saw him work closely with firearms, including shooting competitions. However, with 50 years’ experience behind him and 12 years in the firearms industry, it’s Nigel Johnson that people will see behind the counter. “I first met Nigel when I was 16. I’d bought my first 22 and I got him to work on it, and over the years our paths have crossed in a few different areas including antique arms and mutual acquaintances,” says Shane. For many, Nigel may be a familiar face as there probably isn’t a major franchise that he hasn’t worked for. Having shot at three world championships and with a love of black

powder shooting, Nigel could almost be called a firearms guru, and will be sharing his knowledge, tips and skills with Kelly Country customers. “I grew up in the UK on a farm and firearms were just part of the business. When I came to New Zealand I thought it was wonderful, because you could have all sorts of things you weren’t allowed to have in England,” says Nigel. As well as stocking factory ammunition, firearms, clothing and accessories, Shane’s vision was to create a purpose-built facility where people could custom reload. For some, reloading is actually a hobby in itself and many enjoy developing their ammunition just as

much, if not more, than shooting. “I’ve had experience in all forms of shooting pretty much, I’ve hand loaded since I was 17. Through hand loading, you learn much more about the gun, you learn what it likes and how to get the best out of it, you can buy factory ammunition and it will shoot ok in a gun but once you start hand loading you can get much better accuracy,” says Nigel. As far as Shane and Nigel are aware, Kelly Country is the first of its kind in New Zealand where there’s a testing tunnel on site, although it’s not yet operational. “When it is up and running, the tunnel will allow people to test the muzzle velocities and all that, so

they can perfect their ammunition before manufacturing the quantities they want. The one thing we do stress though is that it’s not a firing range, the idea is you’re testing the product you’ve developed or if you’ve got a fault with a firearm,” says Shane. “We’re not just a gun store, we’re offering people a place where they can learn about their guns, socialise with other shooters, and to be able to have the testing tunnel makes it such a complete package.” With some awesome display pieces also set-up in the building, including a Bofors anti-aircraft gun, Kelly Country is certainly worth a visit whether you’re a keen hunter or shooter.

Orchids on show in Stoke Kate Russell

Lovers of orchids can indulge in a impressive display in Nelson this weekend, and find out more about growing the exotic blooms. The Nelson Orchid Society is holding their show this Saturday in Stoke. President of the Nelson Orchid Society, Barry Rhodes, says there will also be orchids Richmond orchid grower Dirk De Groot will be displaying some of his or- for sale, starting from $7.50, as chids at the Nelson Orchid Society show in the Stoke Primary School hall well as demonstrations. He says there are thousands of this Saturday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

varieties of orchid species, but growing them takes dedication and is slowly becoming a lost art in Nelson with the society down to around 25 members. “Orchid growing is very rewarding, but collections are slowly disappearing in Nelson, so it is important for the society to find new, interested growers,” says Barry. “The society would like to know of any private orchid collections, to see what orchids are still around in Nelson.” He says most orchids need to

be grown in heated houses in Nelson, unless you are growing cold-growing varieties. “Orchid growing is addictive – once you’ve got a few plants, you want to keep adding more.” The Nelson Orchid Society show is on this Saturday, 30 September, 10am – 4pm at the Stoke Primary School hall. Admission is $4, kids under 12 free. If you would like to find out more about becoming a member of the society, you can contact barry_rhds@slingshot. co.nz

Many people today find their lives increasingly busy, noisy and stressful. We tend to rush from one thing to the next, trying to cram in so much because we are fearful of missing out, or feel obligated to fulfil what we imagine are society’s expectations. Most of us are prone to this pressure that we largely place upon ourselves. We carry mobile phones and let them rule our lives by being constantly available, everywhere. Television and internet take up our time, too. So, with family commitments and responsibilities, work, meetings, committees, friends, our social circles - including church – we are very connected and involved with other people. All this places pressure upon ourselves. Finding time and opportunity for silence, stillness and solitude can be almost impossible, a joke, a luxury, seen as a waste of time even. There is nothing inherently wrong with being busy or using technology. It is the way that we do so that is the crux of the matter. Technology and all that it produces makes many areas of our lives easier and more efficient, but unless we are careful it will rob us of silence, stillness and solitude. We need these to keep in touch with ourselves, those closest to us, indeed all people, and to make time for the important things in life. And the most important is a sense of the divine, involving a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Busyness and putting off this relationship is not a new problem because Jesus encountered it in his time on earth. He had invited some people to follow him but they were too busy with their personal lives, and so missed out. You can read this in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 9, verses 59 to 62. Then, as now, we can always find things to distract and occupy us, to take us away from deeper reality and peace. In fact, we are really good at distancing ourselves through activities and noisily expressing ourselves that we risk never really coming to understand our true selves. But it’s not all doom and gloom. We can start small and learn to cultivate and seek opportunities for silence in our daily lives. Sitting quietly with a hot drink while we still our restless hearts. While out walking, or during our lunch time, turn off the music, put the mobile away and hear the voice of God. Move from silence into stillness and just be with God. Psalm 46 “Be still and know that I am God”. May your stillness be blessed.

Racing to a family reunion Simon Bloomberg After nine years of racing at the business end of the Torpedo7 Spring Challenge, Nelson’s PennySue Franklin is looking forward to another “very recreational” family affair in the 11th edition near Geraldine on Saturday. Penny-Sue teamed-up with some super-fast friends to win multiple veteran’s titles in the first nine years of the world’s biggest all-women’s adventure race. But last year, she decided to step back and join her sister Louise McGillivray and friend Jenni Payne in the sixhour event. “I’ve done all 10 races so far and the first nine were very competitive,” PennySue says. “But after Wanaka, I decided my body needed a rest so I entered

the six-hour race with my sister and a friend. “They’d never done anything like this before so it was such a cool challenge. Jenni didn’t even own a bike so she borrowed my son’s – it was a huge sense of accomplishment.” And this Saturday, it will be an even bigger family affair when she lines up at the start with her daughter Abbey, 20, and Louise in the aptly-named Team Cup of Tea Time. Penny-Sue says she was planning to race with the same team this year, but when Jenni couldn’t make it they quickly recruited Abbey. “We will be very recreational but I’m looking forward to it,” Penny-Sue says. “It’s going to be nice having chats to people going up the hill instead of gasping for breath.”

Penny-Sue says their team name was inspired by Louise’s request for a cup of tea in the transition in last year’s event in Golden Bay. It was the first time in nine years that PennySue’s husband and support crew Chris had been asked to make a cup of tea for a team member. “We’d usually be racing in and out of transition in a real hurry, so he wasn’t used to that,” Penny-Sue says. The six-hour race will be Abbey’s second Spring Challenge, after she joined her cousins Georgina and Beatrice Fulton to win the school’s section in Queenstown in 2013. Now, after years of watching her mum compete in the race, she will be joining her on the start line on Saturday. Race director Nathan Fa’avae says 597 teams of three have entered this

year’s race, making it the biggest adventure race in history. Nathan, who is a five-times world champion adventure racer, says the competitors will enjoy trekking, mountainbiking and rafting around a spectacular course that “showcases the region”. “It’s based in Geraldine, but you don’t have to go far and you are in the Southern Alps,” Nathan says. “There’s a lot of real wilderness country and the teams will see some really amazing scenery.” The race will be held in three, six and nine-hour sections, all starting with a 1km run to the 10km rafting stage on the Rangitata River. Teams will then complete a mountainbiking and an orienteering stage with six and ninehour teams also completing a long trek.

Nelson hockey stalwart calls time on career Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

One of Nelson hockey’s most dedicated servants is leaving the district after 45 years of playing, coaching and administrating the game he loves. Craig Brett, 54, started a lifetime in hockey playing for Stoke before joining Federal and then later making the inevitable transition into coaching. But perhaps his greatest contribution to the game has been over the last 14 years serving as a regional development officer, a job he concedes will be hard to leave behind. Craig started working for Sport Tasman as a development officer under the CoachForce scheme in 2003, looking after Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Buller. He later took on the same role for Nelson Hockey, a job he has made his own over the last seven years.

“When I first started with CoachForce, I had some long days driving down to schools in Greymouth and Karamea and then coming back to run our programmes here. It wasn’t sustainable so, when the opportunity came up, I took on the role as regional development officer for Nelson Hockey in 2010. “It’s only a small area but there’s still so much to do. We have 1200 players and 18 programmes, so we’re always busy.” Craig says the growth in numbers of junior players has been one of the highlights of his time as development officer. When he first started, the Nelson primary school’s tournament attracted around 100 players – this year’s edition attracted around 900. “We have quite good growth at junior level and it’s very satisfying seeing that progress. We’ve worked hard to develop our programmes and keep them interesting and we’ve had good support

Craig Brett is leaving after 40 years of playing and coaching hockey in Nelson. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. from coaches.” Craig says the success of the junior programmes is one of the reasons that Nelson has produced top quality players like Black Sticks Anita McLaren and Kelsey Smith. And that is likely to continue says Craig. “There’s five or six young players around here now who have very good futures.”

Craig says they are also fortunate to have a new stadium and two artificial turfs which “have made a big impact on the sport in Nelson”. Playing mid-week games has also been a good move because it avoids clashes with other sports. A personal highlight for Craig has been his involvement with

Masters hockey, including winning three world titles. However, the veteran concedes it’s getting harder to stay in shape to play the game he loves. “The Masters hockey has been a real buzz although I’m a lot slower than I used to be and have to train a lot harder to get the same output. We tried to add the number of games I’d played a while ago but we gave up – it’s well over 1000 but I still love it.” Now, after 14 years, Craig says it’s time for a change as he and his partner move to North Otago later this month to start the next chapter in their lives as owners of the Moeraki Tavern. “I think I’m the oldest development officer in the country and it’s a full-on position, so it’s time for someone new to take over. “But it’s going to be a hard thing to leave. Nelson Hockey has been good to me and so has my club, and that’s something I’ll always cherish and remember.”

Tennis clubs’ ‘have a go’ day popular Hundreds of local children took their school tennis lessons a step further over the weekend by having a crack at their local tennis club. The annual 'Have a Go Tennis Day' encourages children from primary and intermediate schools in the region to pop down to their local club for some coaching and to give the sport a go. Nelson Bays Tennis regional coordinator Ali McQuillan says tennis is "embraced" in 90 per cent of the region's schools in the form on the Tennis Hot Shot programme, which is supported by NBS and Sport Tasman. She says the ‘have a go’ day is a continuation of that programme. "The day marks the conclusion of the schools’ programme allowing pupils to get down to their local courts to put their skills into practice at their closest club with their school mates. “The recipe certainly worked this year, we are thrilled with the turnout and the positive active environment at each of the clubs.” Eleven clubs across the region took part in the day on Saturday, with 44 schools from Nelson to Golden Bay invited to take part in a free tennis session to launch the summer tennis season. The atmosphere of fun and games on court was boosted this year with a beautiful and sunny spring day. “Each club radiated a warm family atmosphere, parents relaxing on the sidelines and courts overflowing with aspiring tennis stars. This year’s event bodes well for the coming summer season, it was a huge success,” says Ali.

BLUE SEPTEMBER SEA SWIM: Nelson swimmers from left, Maggy Johnston, Michele Surcouf, Jill Bann and Sandra McGregor at the Blue September Sea Swim on Sunday. Swimmers lined up at the boat ramp by Nelson Yacht Club before plunging in to the chilly waters for the annual sea swim which raises funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Organised by the Nelson Triathlon Club, in conjunction with Placemakers, the event saw 37 swimmers take to the sea, raising around $3500, although the exact total is yet to be counted. Hayden Squance was the first male back, followed by Placemakers’ Matt Hansen, while the first female back was Kerry Mathieson. The 600m swim that participants undertook symbolises the 600 men who die each year from prostate cancer. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The Nelson Giants pulled the largest viewer numbers during the national basketball league this year -one of the many reasons the team's major sponsor has signed on again for 2018. The Giants will once again be known as the Mike Pero Nelson Giants after the local real estate company recommitted to the team it has had naming rights for since 2015. Managing Director for the Giants, Steve Fitchett, says during one Giants game this year, it was viewed online by 20,000 people and it consistently drew the most number of viewers via the New Zealand Herald website. Craig says that sort of exposure, along with those coming to the game, local coverage and a sense of community are some of the major reasons he's decided to recommit to sponsoring the team. "We see that it's a good night out for people. The Giants is a strong brand and that's why we signed up initially. We wanted to be aligned

with them and they wanted to be aligned with us. They are two good brands. Moving forward there are some good things happening with the Giants and we want to be a part of that." He says the national coverage was also a factor in Mike Pero head office also coming on board to help with the sponsorship. Craig says sponsoring the Giants is the "best sponsorship deal in town". The deal is also great news for the Giants, which endured a tough year on the court in 2017. Steve says the team was operated on a tight budget as it battled to survive through tightening finances. "There's a lot of work going on at the moment in looking at the Giants over the next 25 years and planning for that, to get it right, so it's great to be able to secure a major sponsor for next year." Steve says the management team is now busy looking at players, working on governance structures and planning. "But we'll always be a team that looks after its local players first. It's what we're about."

We want Tasman to be a great place to live for people of all ages. As part of our planning for the next 10 years, we’re asking our older residents how we can make it easier for them to get out and about, participate in social activities or employment, access housing and achieve good health. The feedback will be used to inform the drafting of our Long Term Plan for 2018 – 2028, and to develop an AgeFriendly Policy. Come along to a drop-in session, or fill in an online survey, to get involved. Community drop-in sessions Murchison – Monday 9 October, 10.30 am – 12.30 pm, Murchison Sport, Recreation & Cultural Centre, Hampden Street. Fill in the survey: www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback

Events The First Taste Enjoy a delicious range of food from around the globe and check out the fresh face of Queen Street. Live entertainment and activities. Saturday 14 October, 11.00 am – 2.00 pm on Queen Street between Cambridge Street and McIndoe Place. Adventure Awaits on Tasman's Great Taste Trail Join the Kiwi Guardians on the hunt for fun and adventure in the great outdoors. The Toyota Kiwi Guardians programme encourages kids to explore and learn about the environment - it is like a big treasure hunt! Check out the DOC website for more information www.doc.govt. nz/kiwiguardians and to download your adventure map. Sunday 15 October , 10.30 am – 12.30 pm at Sandeman Reserve, Sandeman Road, Richmond. Register online at www.tasman.govt.nz/recreation/events/walk-series Summer Events Guide The Summer Events Guide is back again this summer, showcasing events happening across the Nelson-Tasman region. To be considered for inclusion in the guide, event organisers must ensure events are listed on It’sOn no later than Sunday 1 October. To list your event go to www. itson.co.nz/organisers If you are interested in paying for advertising space in the Guide, contact judy@printhouse. co.nz, ph 03 543 9480. Second-Hand Sunday is 8 October – Registrations now open What is Second-Hand Sunday? It's a way to re-home household goods – anything from chairs, books, clothing or left over-bits and pieces from building projects. Please don't put out food, dangerous goods like faulty electrical equipment, or chemicals. How do I participate? To offer items, simply complete the online registration form at www.tasman.govt.nz (search phrase “second-hand sunday”).

How do you want to be represented? We’re about to carry out a representation review, which looks at how many councillors should be elected, if they are to be elected by ward or the District as a whole and, if by ward, the number of wards, their boundaries and names. The review also examines whether to have community boards and how many. Further information can be found here: www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Your survey responses will help us formulate an initial proposal for public consultation.

Not ready for the building inspector? Cancel early, no fee It's important to us to deliver a timely and efficient building inspection service. We know it’s always a bit of a juggle to everything to line up at the right time for the inspection. In recent months, we have had an increase in the number of instances where the job is not ready when the inspector arrives on site. This isn’t efficient use of our resources and it is causing frustration with other industry partners who miss out on an inspection booking for that day. We cannot emphasise enough the need to be certain that you will be good to go on the day - so we're introducing an option to cancel early without incurring any extra cost. Cancel by 2.00 pm the day before the booking - no charge From 1 August 2017 you can cancel an inspection booking if you are not ready, until 2.00 pm the day before, without incurring any fees. Cancellation after 2.00 pm will incur a cancellation fee of $150. Any inspection we encounter not ready at the time of inspection will result in a failed inspection and will incur the standard $150 re-inspection fee.

Moturoa Rabbit Island front beach logging For the next month there'll be logging activity at Moturoa Rabbit Island's front beach. There are also some closures on Rough Island. Visitors to the island are asked to keep to the marked trails and obey signage. Logging is in progress and trucks are in constant use. Please use caution, particularly at intersections. More details at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/moturoa.

Do your trees hang low? Now is a good time to check that the vegetation on your property hasn’t become a nuisance. If you have a hedge, shrubs or trees that grow alongside a footpath it’s up to you to make sure they don’t make it hard for people to get past – including those with prams or mobility scooters. So please take a walk around your property and check if any trees, shrubs or bushes need a haircut.

Tasman parks become magical playgrounds A virtual reality playground can be found in parks throughout the District until mid-2018. Where can I play? Magical Park is aimed at 6 – 11 year olds and will be available at the following parks: Ben Cooper Park, Richmond: July – October 2017 Bill Wilkes Reserve, Richmond: July – October 2017 Decks Reserve, Motueka: November 2017 – February 2018 Mapua Recreation Reserve: November 2017 – February 2018 Faulkners Bush, Wakefield: March – June 2018 Lord Rutherford Park, Brightwater: March – June 2018 Visit www.tasman.govt.nz to find out more.

New thinking wanted for website It’s served us well, but the time has come to redesign our website. We’re looking to make it work far better on mobile devices, improve the search function and make it a useful and useable resource. We’d love your help Websites should be for the people who use them most, so we’re asking for your help. Your responses will help us build a site that puts you at the heart of our online services now and in the future. Every answer helps us improve. Become a website tester Later, as we build the site we’ll need people to help us test the website. We’ll need people with a range of devices, different internet speeds. People who use assistive technology such as screen readers or read-aloud systems are also very welcome. You can sign up as part of the survey. Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback and share your ideas.

KAHURANGI NORTH AERIAL RAT & POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling rats and possums in the Golden Bay area. The Kahurangi North aerial operation is part of the Department of Conservation’s Battle for our Birds programme. Control Area The aerial treatment area spans 2,254 hectares of public land managed by the Department of Conservation, from Kahurangi Point north to Big River. Public access to the Department of Conservation treatment area is gained by the respective legal public access points. A detailed map of the treatment area may be requested from Vector Free Marlborough Ltd, or viewed at the Westport and Takaka DOC offices between 8:00am - 12pm and 2pm - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Commencement Date The operation will commence with the application of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets. Following completion of pre-feeding, the application of cereal pellets containing 1080 will commence on or after 30th September 2017, weather dependent. Bait Description Pre-feed: Non-toxic cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, non-dyed (brown in colour) - first aerial application Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green with a toxic loading of 0.15% sodium fluoroacetate (1080) – second aerial application. Precautions The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area. Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses. The risks of poison carcasses to dogs may extend downstream of the control area. Warning signs will be erected at all main public entry points and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs. Please follow the instructions on the signs. Wild animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until the area is declared clear of pesticides. **If you suspect poisoning Contact your local hospital, or dial 111 National Poisons Centre 0800 POISON – 0800 764 766 In the case of a domestic animal being poisoned, contact a local veterinarian.
