Tasman’s booming ecomony

A strong regional economy and growing business confidence are creating jobs throughout Nelson-Taman resulting in one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Statistics New Zealand’s Household Labour Force survey for the September quarter showed that the unemployment rate for the region was just 3.9 per cent, well below the national average of 6.2 per cent. That’s down from 4.2 per cent in June this year and the 4.5 per cent recorded for the same quarter last year. Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency chief executive Bill Findlater says we traditionally have had the lowest unemployment but the economy is picking up and businesses are becoming more confident and that’s also having an impact on the figures. “It’s been a better year for us. I’m struggling to find any doom and gloom at the moment.”

Bill says the region’s primary industries are driving the economic recovery with horticulture “having a better year” and the forestry industry benefitting from high log prices. “When the primary sector has a good year it spreads through the whole region,” Bill says. Port Nelson’s business development manager Rob Hawkes says their log exports are booming on the back of high log prices with exports through Port Nelson and Picton reaching record levels. “We are seeing log prices higher than in 2011 which was the acknowledged industry high,” Rob says. “The Chinese economy is booming and that’s driving log prices up.

‘Perfect’ weekend for A&P show It is unknown how many people walked through the Nelson A&P Show gates on the weekend, but coordinator Annette Robinson says the feedback “had been excel-

lent” after a perfect weekend weather-wise. The Nelson A&P Show celebrated its 120th anniversary and while the goals had certainly changed since its

inception when it was based entirely on agriculture, Annette believed the animals always brings back the crowds. SEE PAGE 2

Perfect weekend for A&P Show FROM PAGE 1 “They had huge numbers registered and I feel we’re on a slight turn so maybe next year we can get some of the early years aspect back into the show,” she says. The Nelson A&P Show often comes under fire for its entry fee, and while a lowered family rate for this year seemed to go down well for some event-goers, the feedback from an entertainment point of view was mixed. Richmond’s Dean Hunter took his kids to the show and says the $25 fee was “a pleasant surprise”, but did admit it was a “little bit steep” having to pay at the gate and then come in and spend more money. “We come most years. Today I’d say there is less to do. It seems a lot quieter today. Whether it was busier yesterday

I don’t know. It definitely seems more thinned out,” he says. Grant Blakeborough, of Nelson, says he always brings the kids for a fun day out and they were “pretty happy with it all”. “We’ve only just got here so we haven’t had a good look around but so far I’m pretty happy with it all. It’s more for the kids and they love it so it becomes a bit of a traditional every year.” Peter Mott, of Wakefield, brought his grandkids along and thought the event was better than last year. “There seems to be more here,” he says. Families had to previously pay $30 to attend the show, but this year a prebuy ticket could be purchased for $20, and Annette says it showed with more families attending on Saturday. “The weekend pass is $25 and that’s a huge reduction for families. We want to make it affordable.”

FROM PAGE 1 “We are averaging 35,000 to 50,000 tonnes of log exports a month in Nelson which is up 10 to 15 per cent on last year.” Rob says the high volumes of log exports are expected to continue through until the second or third quarter of next year. Bill says a building boom and opening of a number of big retail stores is also creating jobs. Construction is picking up while employment in the retail sector was given a boost with the opening of the new Kmart store which has created 90 new jobs. But while Coman Construction had projects in Richmond, Stoke and near the airport, contracts manager Ben Coman didn’t believe there was a building boom at the moment. He says the current climate was showing signs of improvement, but that was in contrast to the slow period the industry had recently experienced. “I’d say by no means are we in a building boom yet. Certainly there are signs of improvement with the amount of building activity about but we’re not in the middle of a building boom.”

Murray says the outlook remains positive with the MDF plant that “just keeps running at full capacity” and its laminated veneer lumber plant’s products sold out to February of March next year. Matthew Hoddy of Vailima Orchards in Hope says the industry has been on the up for several years, based on growth in Asia and that means more jobs. “It’s been a growth phase for us for a few years now and it just continues to grow in the number of people we need and the number of work hours.” He says it is harder to find staff because there are fewer people looking for work.

Signs will remain at areas that have been baited with the poison but forestry users are reminded that they should be aware of the poisoning risk to their pets from eating baits or scavenging possum carcasses. An additional operation will be baited this Friday in the Old Sow area, near Dart River, the Wangapeka River and Tadmor Valley. Wednesday November 13: The Uklectics, a local band who held a fundraising concert at the Playhouse for the Nelson Hospice two weeks ago ended up raising more than $1000. Wednesday November 13: Since coming on the market and appearing in the Waimea Weekly, the historical home on Hill St that was built in1853 has had many people come forward to show their interest. Situated on 77 Hill St, the heritage cob cottage with onsite 1908 Edwardian villa is going for offers over $950,000. Anthony Carppe of Bayleys says he’s had lots of enquiries and an open home this Saturday from 11am is expected to draw a good turnout. Wednesday October 23: Henley School’s cookbook, ‘Seasons of Nelson’ has been selling steadily since the school held its launch party in October. The book, full of recipes that have been canvassed from the school community can be purchased from the school office during the week, at a cost of just $20 for one, or $50 for three copies.

Man marries his father Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz When 83-year-old Jock Nicholls got married to Leonie Joyce in the Rotoiti Chapel earlier this month it was a real family affair with one of his sons, Alastair, performing the wedding ceremony and another, Michael, acting as best man. Jock’s grandchildren also helped out with Alastair’s oldest son Jeremiah giving a reading and his daughter Katie singing a song while rest of the family including Jock’s three other children, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren attended the ceremony. Leonie also had plenty of family support with all six of her living brothers attending the wedding. Jock says the family involvement in November 16 ceremony made the big day even more special. “It makes it a bit unique especially with Alastair conducting the ceremony,” he says. Alastair has married “about 30 or 40 couples” in the Rotoiti Chapel after being persuaded to become a marriage celebrant by friends 10 years ago. However, he concedes conducting his own father’s wedding ceremony involved a little more emotion than usual. “I think it’s great that he is getting remarried and so many of the family is involved. He is not trying to replace

Leonie and Jock Nicholls with friends and family at their wedding in St Arnaud last weekend. Mum but he wants companionship and it’s lovely that he’s found it - we are all very excited to be part of it.” Not that Alastair had a choice. “He’s my dad and he said ‘you’ll be doing the ceremony’ and that was the end of it.” A devout Christian, Jock says meeting and marrying Leonie was a “Godgiven gift”. “A couple of years after my wife passed away, I was so very lonely I prayed to God. It was a Wednesday and on the Thursday Leonie arrived in St Arnaud. She was living in Te Awamutu and came down with friends to housesit a place near Gowan Bridge and they came to our church on the Sunday.

“After they left, I sent them a note to say thank you for attending the service and she replied saying she was really taken with our church. Then I phoned her and our relationship started from there. “But we almost never met. She didn’t want to come down with her friend initially because she said it was too cold and the airfare was too expensive but then she found a $49 airfare on line and decided to come.” Jock said he proposed to Leonie during a visit to Te Awamutu and then she came back to live in St Arnaud. “It was the first time I had been on a plane by myself so it was a bit overwhelming. But it was worth it,” he says.

Forestry prices give TDC a boost Increased profits from the Tasman District Council’s forestry operations have provided a small lift for the council’s finances thanks to rising log prices and reduced operational costs. The council owns a number of commercial forests including Rabbit Island, Kingsland in the Richmond Hills, Borlase and Eve’s Valley, and a recent report to the corporate services committee showed a net revenue of $1.129million for the year ending June 30. That follows a net revenue of last year leaving the council’s forestry account with a balance of $1.014million.

The council’s forestry contractors PF Olsen reported that one of the main reasons for the increase in profits were operational costs being $240,678 under budget. An increase in log prices on the back of strong demand from export and domestic markets also contributed to the improved returns. A total of 18,167 tones was logged from two council forests this year, Rabbit Island and Borlase, for a net return of $62/tonne. That’s an increase of $11/tonne on last year’s net return. The report stated that export markets were strengthening “as countries come out of

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz recession”. Domestic markets were boosted by the construction activity and rebuilding following the Canterbury earthquakes. The earthquakes had impacted on the market in a number of ways including reversing a decline in demand for wooden posts due to the downturn in viticulture. The demand for posts was now increasing because they were being used for building foundations and retaining walls in the

Canterbury rebuild. The report stated that the short-term future also looked bright for the council’s forests because of its policy to log mature trees. It stated that the widespread trend of logging semi-mature trees to capitalise on high prices was creating a demand for quality timber which would increase over the next five years. “The Tasman District Council forests are well placed to capitalise on this anticipated shortage of quality logs.” The council was budgeting on 18168 tonnes being logged next year, all from Rabbit Island.

Local motorcyclists turned more than a few heads when they attended Route 6 motorcycle club’s Dice Run on Saturday. More than 90 motorcyclists took part in the 160km round trip, which saw the group travel en masse from Stables Richmond, the Kohatu pub, Sprig & Fern Motueka, the Playhouse in Mapua, before finishing for a prizegiving at the Abbey Bar & Cafe. As well as cash and other prizes for rolling the highest dice, at each stop the publican handed over a bottle of spirits that was awarded to the owner of their favourite bike.

Motorcycle accidents concern police A helmetless motorcyclist speeding at 160km/h with a passenger in a summer dress on board was “at the extreme end of stupid”, says area commander Steve Greally, and came just days after a middle-age man died crashing in Golden Downs, raising questions over motorcycle safety. Scott Robert Healey, 45, was airlifted to Nelson Hospital and died as a result of his injuries after colliding with a van travelling in the opposite

direction. Police say he was just enjoying a day out with friends, but has now become part of a growing statistic of middle-aged men on high performance bikes who never make it home. Six motorcyclist fatalities have occurred here this year alone, and there was nearly another on Saturday when members of the Police Traffic Alcohol Group spotted a motorcyclist without a helmet, carrying a passenger. When he saw po-

lice the motorcyclist took off at speed and was clocked at 160km/h before he and the female passenger on board were found lying on the side of the road injured. “But thankfully not dead,” Steve says. “Motorcyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users and on a fine weekend like we’ve just had recreational riders are out in numbers. The grim reality is that a dream ride can all too easily turn to tragedy.”

He ended the demonstration using a modern electric shearing plant. “It’s just like having a haircut,” Dobbie assured the pupils as

Airport ready for giant birthday party It’s not often the community gets a chance to join in a party of this significance, but to celebrate its 75th anniversary, Nelson Airport will open its doors to the public this weekend. The free event, to be held this Saturday at the Air Nelson hangar is aimed at sharing the milestone with the community and a full schedule of entertainment is planned. Nelson’s aviation history started with the

landing of an Avro 504 in 1921 and has since flourished. Nelson Airport was constructed and opened and functioning in 1938 with the first commercial flight taking off on November 30 of that year. It has become the fourth busiest airport in the country with 800,000 passengers touching down and taking off every year. The open day will showcase the region’s aviation history and there will be 22 differ-

ent aircraft on display, including a number of classic aircraft. The RNZAF will attend including the Air Force band, TV weatherman Jim Hickey will be there as MC and to meet the public and there will be a fly-over by classic fighters including Nanchangs and the only known Avro Anson still flying. Along with DC3 and helicoptor rides available for purchase, there will be plenty of things to see and do for the whole family

Local artists gather for annual Richmond exhibition The Tasman Visual Art Group's annual summer exhibition keeps getting bigger with this weekend's fifth edition at the Richmond Town Hall featuring almost 200 works. Group member Averill Moore says the popular exhibition has been well supported by their 70 members who have entered some amazing works. Although the majority of entries are paintings Averill says there will also be a range of crafts including ceramics, felt work and candle holders. “We have a summer and winter exhibition and each year we are getting more people exhibiting,” Averill says. “This is our fifth summer exhibition and it looks like being our biggest yet.” In addition to the two exhibitions, Averill says group members meet every Wednesday for a “plain air” painting session. The group also holds a meeting that usually features a guest speaker on the last Wednesday of every month at the

says Nelson Airport CEO Kaye McNabb, who labels the event as a rare opportunity for community celebration. “This is going to be a very big celebration of Nelson Airport for the people of Nelson. We invite everyone along to enjoy the day out and to help us celebrate the 75th anniversary.” Free parking is available and the event kicks off at 10am and wraps up at 4pm.

Kevin Jourdain shows off the medal he earned by finishing the New York City Marathon. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Kevin Jourdain felt like he was on top of the world when he sprinted across the New York City Marathon finish line. All 42km were complete, and so was his life long dream. “I sprinted the last 100m or so,” says the Richmond man who was born with cerebral palsy. “It meant the world to me.” Kevin’s official time was five hours seven minutes and 20 seconds, which was just short of his own goal of completing the race in less than five hours. But Kevin says finishing it was all that mattered. “It feels awesome. I just love to run.” Kevin competed as part of the Achilles Foundation which enables people with all disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics. And while the marathon is generally perceived as a gruelling event, Kevin says all of his training in the lead up made it actually pretty easy. “It felt like another run just because of how much training I had done but for me it’s just totally natural to run. Basically the whole time, bar a few moments, I felt I could do this. I knew I could do it from the very beginning.”

Mother launches first ever book

With my staff having attended two serious crashes involving motorcyclists over the weekend it seems timely to have a chat about bike safety. Motorcyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users and on a fine weekend like we’ve just had recreational riders are out in numbers. The grim reality is that a dream ride can all too easily turn to tragedy. Despite what many riders might think, the riders are at fault in the majority of crashes recorded in Nelson Bays. Last weekend a man in his 40s died after crashing coming down Kerr Hill in the Golden Downs. He was just enjoying a day out with friends when that crash happened and his family will live with that forever. Unfortunately he’s part of a growing statistic - middle aged men on high performance bikes who never make it home. In Tasman Police District we have had six motorcycle fatalities this year, three in Nelson Bays and the average age of those riders was 58 years. We talk about the fatalities a lot, but behind that are also disturbing numbers of people left hospitalised for months or even incapacitated for the rest of their lives. While travelling to Marlborough on Saturday the Police Traffic Alcohol Group members spotted a motorcyclist who wasn’t wearing a helmet. He was carrying a pillion passenger and when he saw police he made a stupid decision and took off at speed. The next police car to come across him clocked him at 160 kmh. By the time police found him and his female passenger they were lying on the side of the road - injured, but thankfully not dead. They had braked heavily to turn into a private driveway and lost control. This incident is at the extreme end of stupid. While the rider wasn’t wearing a helmet, his passenger was in a summer dress and jandals. He didn’t have a licence, the bike wasn’t roadworthy and we are still awaiting blood alcohol results. He showed reckless disregard for his and his passenger’s safety. Thankfully the vast majority of riders are sensible and responsible people. However, many over-estimate their riding ability and I’d really like to encourage all riders to eat a bit of humble pie and seriously consider taking part in one of the rider training courses. These courses aren’t just for bunnies and beginners. Really skilled people assess all aspects of your riding technique and give you tips that will ultimately make you a better and safer rider. The feedback I’ve had from people who have been riding for years is that they learnt a lot on the courses and they all highly recommend them. You can find information on the courses at either of the councils.

A local mother-turnedauthor says her children’s book The Girl Who Loves to Sing tells an important message in relation to bullying. Stoke woman Rebecca Metcalfe launched the book, which is aimed at children between 3-10 years of age, at the Nelson Library last week and will be promoting it in the Richmond Mall this Sunday from 10am until 4pm.

Great range of food in the shade. Jeff McLaren. 1080 creates debate: Forest and Bird fully support the insane use of 1080 poison, a poison that can kill every breathing animal, bird, reptile, insect and even fish. They know that this poison kills the same native birds that they say we need to PROTECT! Gillian Pollock says aerial 1080 drops are the only way of protecting our native birdlife. Are you brainwashed Gillian? 1080 has been used in NZ since the late 1950s if it does a good job then why is it still used. Target the problem animals species by species, the millions of dollars spent on 1080 annually can create employment, the kills can be monitored 100% correct, no native birds are put at harm, farmers stock is not at harm and most importantly our beautiful country can stop being poisoned! It’s

time to realise that these government parties, animal health board, forest and bird and even more are just slowly poisoning New Zealand, killing everything that eats 1080. Is this what YOU want? Glen James. 1080 should not be used at all in New Zealand. It kills the native birds and they take longer to reproduce then the predators that DOC say they are targeting. Clinton Harvey. Ban 1080 simple. Kristyn Musson. 1080 needs to continue, if not the damage that would be done to our forests would be irreversible and devastating. We can’t allow possums and TB to spread further than they already have and those saying we should just pay people to hunt them are in dreamland. Most of the terrain would be too harsh for people to go and hunt possums. I agree that it isn’t great but until a better solution is found to keep possums under control we must continue with 1080. PAUL HENRY Business gives school a boost This Week

Richmond School principal Tim Brenton and students Cooper Adams and Sophie Hobden receive a free booster seat from Mobility 4 You’s Meryl Jordan last week.

The change to a law that will now see children up to seven years old restrained into a car seat while travelling is already having a major impact on Richmond School says principal Tim Brenton. So he was delighted to receive two booster seats from Queen St business Mobility 4 You, who recently gave one to a parent in the community as well. With more students needing to bring booster seats to school for class trips, and an increase in parent help, Tim says the school has found it is already relying on buses for transport more than usual. “This is wonderful to have two extra ones, because it’s already had an impact” he says. “The bus company are very good and they look after us very well. In the past if we’ve had four children in each car now we can only have two or three so we need more parents. If we can’t get enough support then we take the bus.” Tim says there have been times when parent support had been a struggle, but there were generally some that were happy to help.”

My gosh! I have survived 58 plus Christmases in my life, and certain things have darn well changed totally. When I was a kid, the level of anticipation and excitement was like magic – something was in the air, adults started going the most treasured gift of all time, his shopping more often, and we went to one and only beloved Son, Jesus, to die places like the Farmers roof in Christchthat we could live more as God wants us urch to ride the huge train. I remember Sunday school was full of stories about live – by faith. In fact if anyone has capthe baby Jesus, the animals, and some tured the real Biblical concept of Christmas, it is those who opt for a simple, kind of journey, that seemed to be renot expensive Christmas, and consider lated to God – though I had Santa and Jesus all rolled into one somehow I sushow they can give hope to others on the other side of the world whom God pect. Everything revolved around parAllan Wasley, also cares about. Children pooling toties, extra drinks, and hot, hot nights Wakefield gether to give something towards an aid waiting for the presents to finally be Anglican. agency project, are learning the more under the tree. In my parenting years, it was a joy to see faces of kids whom we could give valuable lesson, That “in giving we receive, and in dying (to self) that we gain eternal life” to quote gifts too, repeating our childhood delight. Since then I have seen another face of Christmas, the words of St Francis. Make your Christmas a a more honest face. The dreadful disasters in the chance to do something amazing to help somePhilippines, and earlier tsunami in Indonesia for one in greater need, and you will have entered the example. Since then I have realised that Christ- Christmas hope, found in Jesus.

Andy McQueen Chairperson - BCA It is now less than a month until Christmas and soon you will notice the lights going up on the Village Green and hanging baskets of flowers in front of the shops and we encourage you all to brighten up your places for the festive season. Just a reminder that the community Christmas event Carols by Glo-lite is on again in Snowdens Bush on Saturday December 14. The Nelson Cycle Trust has asked us for a recommendation as to where to put up information signs on the Cycle Trail and we have suggested a

large sign on Bryants Road near the Wairoa River, a small sign on the Brightwater side of the subway and a small one near the Domain if necessary. The Tasman District Council is having a meeting in Brightwater on Tuesday December 3 at 7pm in the Brightwater School Hall with updates about the Lee Valley Dam, so the next and final meeting for the year for the Community Association will be held on Monday night, December 2, and all residents are welcome to join us. On behalf of the association I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas. Cheers, Andy

Community focused fundraisers at Brightwater Church Saint Paul’s Church on Waimea Rd West, Brightwater, is currently raising money to replace the old vicarage. To do this parishioners have been organising a variety of functions. Recently, sixty senior citizens in our community enjoyed a devonshire tea in the gracious surrounds of “Aldourie." They savoured fresh scones and homemade jam with cream and enjoyed a range of dance, easy listening guitar and classical music provided by ‘Mitch’ and some very talented teens. The event was organised by Nicola Berthelsen, the Waimea Senior Care coordinator. Money raised has been added to the St Paul’s vic“A Trusted Name in Real Estate”

arage fund with a sum also being given to support youth work at St John’s, Wakefield. On Sunday December 15 at 2pm we will host our next function, a walk through historic St Paul’s church, beautifully decorated for Christmas. Stay for high tea and an hour of the magical music of Miles and Margaret Jackson. Tickets will be $25 with a limited number available from Scissor Art, the Richmond Mall and Mrs Brenda Watson, 111 Whitby Rd, Wakefield. The outside of the church will also be lit for Christmas each evening from December 14 to 18 and the church will be open for viewing each afternoon from 2pm til 10pm. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult. To walk through the church will cost $2.00 per person or $5.00 per family.

Want to get away from it all this summer? Murchison is a well known hotspot during the warmer months and is a great place to take some time out, whether you are looking to take a road trip further afield or simply want a close by holiday destination. Friendly local faces fill the town and you will find it abuzz with people who consider it a must experience holiday location – for many valid reasons. Murchison has always been a brilliant place to stretch your legs while on a long journey south bound, but over the past few years it has flourished to become a beautiful and convenient holiday spot in its own right, just a stone’s throw away from Nelson. With plenty to see and do to relax or unwind and adventures to enjoy, Murchison has something for the thrill seeker or those looking for a calm retreat. Have you been in to Bin Inn Richmond lately? If you haven’t, then what are you waiting for? You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of products you’ll find in store. The store has been locally owned and operated by Carolyn and Kevin Norgate for more than five years and in that time, they’ve really taken on board customer feedback and have transformed the store into a one stop shop for specialty grocery items. Everything you need to get cooking in the kitchen can be found in store, from peas, beans and lentils, pasta and rice, herbs and spices, to preserving ingredients. You’ll also find a variety of baking goods including products for breadmaking, cakes, biscuits, muffins and more, with most items available to buy in bulk. But Bin Inn Richmond isn’t just home to your favourite grocery staple items either, with one of the biggest ranges of gluten free products in town. Carolyn has noticed just how many locals have come looking for gluten free products and has built up an impressive range of ingredients that most gluten free lovers would normally search high and low, all over town for and now they are in

one place. “A large number of our customers come in specifically for our gluten free range. We have everything from pasta, pastry, pizza dough, pancakes, muffin and cake mix to biscuit mix, so there really is a big selection.” Alongside the great range of other bulk buys such as nuts, grains, cereals and lollies, as well spirit making kits, beer and cider brewing kits and cheese making kits, you’ll also find an extensive supply of handy household items. Bin Inn Richmond has sourced many home cleaning items such as laundry powder and laundry soap, along with an all natural eco friendly range of bathroom, kitchen and hygiene products. You can also fill your own containers from the self serve barrels of cleaning products which is great for the environment as well as easier on your pocket. This also means you can buy as much or as little as you need - plus you can save money. Compare the cost of filling liquids in your own container from the self selection bins with the prices of packaged cleaning products and you’ll be amazed at just how much you can save.

Carolyn has also introduced an amazing range of Dutch products to her store, including Bolletje Crisp Bread. Her relationship with the supplier means that this is a lovely, long term fixture of the store so you’ll always find your favourite Dutch treats on the shelf. Watch this space for an organics range too, as Carolyn has set some plans in motion to expand in this area. If you are a regular at Bin Inn, you’ll know all about Carolyn’s open door policy when it comes to suggestions on products. “We listen to our customers and find out exactly what they are looking for and how we can help. With us you are a real person, not just a number coming through the door.” This is one of the reasons many loyal customers continue to shop in store, they appreciate the good service, the friendly smiles and the fact they are appreciated by the staff. “One of the biggest differences between us and a regular grocery store, is that we stock a lot of specialty items that they don’t and the things we do buy in that are the same, we can offer them a lot cheaper and in bulk.” While Carolyn and Kevin weren’t keen on making any drastic changes when they took over the ownership of Bin Inn Richmond, regulars will note just how far the store has come, with changes to the appearance here and there and the obvious extension in products. The most recent changes appearance wise however has been the revamp after the floods that swept through Richmond, flowing through one door of Bin Inn and straight out the other says Caro-

lyn. “We had to close for three weeks while we were being repaired, but we were really grateful that the damage wasn’t worse.” While Bin Inn Richmond is owned and operated by locals, the store falls under the umbrella of a 100% Kiwi owned network of 34 Bin Inn stores, so you can take advantage of that collective knowledge. As well as Carolyn and the teams in-store advice, there is a wealth of information available online at www.bininn. co.nz where you will find discussion on a wide range of topics. Whether it’s baking and general cooking recipes, beverage brewing tips, gluten free items, they leave no stone unturned when it comes to quality food. You can also sign up to receive Barrel Talk, the monthly newsletter featuring recipes and news from the Bin Inn community. With an emphasis on quality whole foods and specialty grocery items; you can buy as much or as little as you like from a generous selection at Bin Inn Richmond. From baking to brewing, gluten free or hard to find items, you’ll be delighted at what you will find. To celebrate Christmas, Carolyn is holding a couple of great competitions. Call in and make a purchase and you will go in the draw to win an Ecostore Healthy Home bucket. She also has a great range of Christmas calendars to give away, so make sure you head in store to win. Don’t forget to drop your receipt in the Shop ‘n’ Win box either, for your chance to win $5000. Visit the team at 271 Queen Street, Richmond or phone (03) 543 8045

RESTAURANT AND TAKEAWAY

It’s been an action packed year for Bill, who recently took on two additional chefs, Ivan and Jerry, to help him keep up with the demand of the busy restaurant. The floods in April meant he had to shut the doors to his restaurant for eight weeks while repairs were made. Bill says arriving at the door to the restaurant the morning after he was shocked to find “a river running through, right from the front door and out of the back door into the car park.” So it was a relief to get straight onto repairs and reo-

pen without too much down time. Bill would like to say a big thanks to the local tradesmen that helped him get the restaurant back up to its high standard ready for reopening in such a short space of time. Open for takeaway lunch and dinner, with the reastaurant open from 4.30pm, things are getting busier and busier, so having two new team members on board has made a big difference. The bigger team means that Bill is no longer rushed off his feet in the same way he used to be. While he is still very busy preparing his delicious Cantonese and asian meals from scratch, he can also focus on preparing specialty dishes that he didn’t have the time to do before taking on Ivan and Jerry. Dinners at Eastern Cuisine are increasingly popular in the lead up to Christmas and Bill and the team make dining out a fun, friendly

experience. It’s the perfect option if you want something well prepared but want a break from cooking for yourself. They provide a great option to treat yourself and your family, and children are most welcome. In addition to enjoying a sit down meal in the dining room, don’t forget that Eastern Cuisine also offers two different takeaway options. One is a handy self-service smorgasbord for lunches and dinners, a handy option where you can simply choose the dishes you want from the available options at the buffet. The other option is the more than 90 different meal options on the restaurant menu, also available to takeaway, so you can order your old favourites and specialty dishes, but enjoy the convenience of having your meal to-go. Eastern Cuisine is well equipped to handle large parties within the restaurant and welcome any

bookings for Christmas and the New Year. Bill has completely revamped the menu for Christmas but while there are many new tasty items, the old favourites are still there. The dining room fits anywhere between 60 to 80 people comfortably and anything goes when it comes to keeping your guests happy. Whether you are celebrating the end of a busy year at work, having a large number of guests over or you need to cater to something more formal like a wedding function or milestone birthday, Bill and Michelle can help you plan the perfect party. There are a brand new range of menu options available to suit any number of people or budget. Whether you prefer to do a set menu or order ahead for the entire table, nothing is too hard to cater to. Set four course meals and banquets are very popular ways to celebrate at Eastern Cuisine, but talk to Bill about any other ideas you might have. Eastern Cuisine offers a full selec-

tion of Chinese favourites including Peking Duck, a dish prized for its thin, crisp skin, which is incredibly popular in China, amongst the local Chinese community and all Chinese food lovers. It is so popular in fact, that it is considered the national dish of China. If you want to serve Peking Duck at your function however, make sure you let Eastern Cuisine know in advance. Bill will need a day or two’s notice for this as it is prepared traditionally. There is also a superb selection of local NZ wines that go well with the menu, as well as a good variety of spirits which are traditionally enjoyed with Chinese food. The Christmas decorations are up and Bill is now taking bookings for end of year functions or parties so whether you want to celebrate with friends or family, or you want traditionally prepared Chinese takeaway, call in to Eastern Cuisine, open six days Tuesday to Sunday at 275 Queen St. Phone 544 3132 to talk to Bill about catering to your crowd.

Christmas Specials

Karlin Spiers, Reon Enoka, Finbar Ruebsam and Gabby Green are off to the National Summer Games in Dunedin this week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Special Olympians ready for nationals Forty athletes will represent Special Olympics Nelson at the National Summer Games in Dunedin this week and they’re all “excited” at the prospect of beating personal bests and winning medals. More than 1200 athletes from around the country with intellectual disabilities have embarked on fundraising and training programmes ahead of the tournament. The Nelson team had to raise $56,000 to send the competitors, caregivers and coaches plus another $8000 for uniforms. While the Canterbury Community Trust contributed $15,000, the rest was raised through art auctions and sausage sizzles. “The people in Nelson really look after Special Olympics and they seem to like us, they’re very generous and we’re very lucky,” says Special Olympics Nelson coordinator Lois Aitkenhead. “It’s a bigger team that last

year when we took 32 so we’re going up.” Nelson will have athletes across seven sports, including basketball, boccia, swimming, track and field, powerlifting and golf. “Swimming is the biggest one, along with basketball. They’re the biggest in New Zealand and it’s the same for us too.” The most experienced competitor is Ian Tomlinson who has competed in track and field at every nationals since 1984. There will be medals for a top three finish and ribbons are given out to all of the top eight. Competitors are put into division depending on their ability, giving them fair competition. The tournament will also give athletes a chance to qualify for the World Games in Los Angeles in 2015. “We’re aiming for personal bests for everybody and that’s all you can ask for.”

Boating Nelson is known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand, and what better way to enjoy our fantastic summer weather than relaxing out on the water, taking part in the great range of water sports, fishing, diving, and recreation that is on offer? Before you even think about hooking the boat up to the trailer though, don’t forget that planning and preparation is needed before you take to the water and a bit of forward thinking could save your life – or at least save the cost of a tow back to shore should something go amiss. Here are a few simple things you should do. Firstly, check the weather and sea conditions before deciding whether to go out. Know the tides and find out what the outlook is for the day. Whether you are buying a boat, taking yours out again with the arrival of summer, or you’ve been using it often, regular maintenance and equipment checks are the only way to ensure troublefree boating. If you do not, it will catch up with you, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next month, but it will almost certainly happen. So whether you’re heading over to the bay for the holidays or you are heading out on the water locally, it pays to make sure your boat is up to scratch before setting sail. If you want to have fun out on the water this summer for business, leisure or pleasure make sure you check out the great range of marine servicers, suppliers and providers that our region has to offer. ‘’Port Nelson, keeping people safe on the water this summer’’. Port Nelson has had a part to play in helping to keep water users safe locally since it’s inception in 1842. As a busy commercial port Nelson saw over 700 vessels over 100tons transit through last financial year, as well as the myriad of private boaties that use the port as their base, fishing, diving and playing in the beautiful Tasman Bay. In conjunction with the Coastguard, Port Nelson keep a watchful eye over all waterborne activities both commercial and private, and play an important part in providing both help and assistance to marine users and in some cases acting in an enforcement capacity. • “Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, who’ll put a penny in the old man’s hat?” Who indeed. But more importantly, who will put some veges in the garden, so that a bountiful Christmas can be enjoyed by all at the table. • It cannot be denied that home grown produce has a special flavour, and you know exactly how the plants have been grown. • So, if it is to be a cold Christmas meal, due to a hot summer day, we will need a lettuce or two. There are many varieties available from those that form beautiful hearts, to the much easier to grow picking lettuces, that come in a variety of attractive colours. These are what I choose to grow because they are so easy. • A salad just has to have some tomatoes in it. Have you got yours in the garden yet? If not, you may be a bit late for the Christmas hamper, but they are a MUST for summer meals. Again, there is a confusing selection to choose from, both on colour and size. Best that you make a selection for the sake of variety. Did you know that tomatoes should be planted deeply, to enable roots to form on the lower stems? The fruits don’t form on the bottom of the stems, and you will have a much stronger plant as well. • I know your potatoes are in and growing, aren’t they? So we need to say no more on that subject!

• And what about beetroot? Again in several colour ways but I like the good old dark red for colour. Also the elongated variety is much easier to slice, after you have enjoyed sliding the skin off the beet. [I love doing that!] • So we have the basics for a salad, but what about all the other summer veges that should be sown and grown now? Things like beans, zucchinis, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, both long and round, courgettes, and while you are about it, plant a pumpkin or two along with squash [said to be sweeter than pumpkin] and best that you plant sweet corn instead of sowing seed to catch up on a bit of time. You should keep up a continuation of sowing and planting to ensure a continuing supply of vegetables. • “If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will do If you haven’t got a ha’penny’ then God bless you’. In other words, if you don’t make an effort now, you will miss out! • I was going to talk to you about some plants with quite unusual flowers like kalmias, brunfelsia the [yesterday today and tomorrow] shrub, a crazy campanula called Octopus, and a hydrangea that has flowers that resembles a lilac. But all is not lost, there will be another time for that. In the meantime, keep the vege garden producing well!

WTTU on top after first day

They’re just halfway through the top of the table clash with Athletic College Old Boys but Waimea Toi Toi United appear to be well on track to claim the victory, and all but seal a spot in the two-day final. Backed by a five wicket haul to captain Cade Armstrong, it took just 46.2 overs for Bar 321 WTTU to clean through the RWCA ACOB batting order. Just five ACOB batsmen reached double figures as their scorecard

read 122 all out at the end of their innings. Cade only gave away 16 runs in an impressive 10.2 over spell which saw the Henley School teacher give the ACOB tail a lesson in bowling, earning his first five wicket bag of the season. After making a shakey start with the bat, WTTU asserted further dominance when Grey Hay took to the crease, hitting an unbeaten 113 runs off 128 balls to steer his side to 236/4 at the end of the second innings.

Now in Richmond Mall Flight Centre Richmond has been around for over 15 years in its Queen Street premises but, as of 18 November, they have made the move into Richmond Mall. Flight Centre say that it’s important to be where the customers want them and to be available when they’re wanted. Manager Sarah McDonald says what she loves about Flight Centre is that they are always innovative and always striving to be better for their customers. Her push to get them into the mall is very much in line with that. “People have an assumption that all we do is flights” she says, “we offer everything any travel retailer does, cruises, coach tours, packages - dreams!” Come have a chat and see our new store down at the mall!

Year 9s topple Nelson Waimea College has proven to have the best Year 9 cricket team in the region, finishing ahead of Nelson College and Marlborough Boys College to book a spot in the South Island tournament in Christchurch. Waimea, two Nelson teams and Marlborough all contested the year 9 College Cricket Tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday at Greenmeadows in Stoke. In the final against Nelson College

A, Waimea won the toss and elected to bowl first. A strong bowling effort saw Nelson A restricted to just 117 all out. Cole Saunders chipped in with three wickets. In reply, Waimea paced themselves well during the innings, managing to score the winning runs off the second to last over. Matt Heyward and Ryan Hooper both scored 34 runs sharing a 69 run second wicket partnership. Luca Palmer-Donaldson finished second place at the National Mini Motocross Championship on the North Shore. Insert: Brookie-Lee and Chase McManaway with the trophies they won at the same event. Young riders impress

The Nelson kids have shown there’s plenty of talent coming through the ranks after some impressive performances at the recent Mini Motorcross Championship on the North Shore. Brightwater’s Luca PalmerDonaldson, who finished second in the 9-11 year old 65cc class, was the top performing local with Ezra Fladgate finishing fifth in the 7-8 year old 65cc class, Chase McManaway

He’s got a pretty good racing pedigree,

his older brother Jake rides pretty bloody good, his dad rides pretty good and his twin brother Nico rides pretty good as well. They might not be the next Josh Coppins but they’ll be a force to be reckoned with that’s for sure.” The number of young riders has doubled in the past year with 47 taking part in the recent Nelson Mini Motocross Champs. “It’s bloody good to see the kids enjoy themselves.”
