Shop ‘n’ Win returns - bigger and better Get involved in Waimea Weekly’s Shop ‘n’ Win competition and you could start the New Year off with $5000 cash in hand. The popular competition has been running for the last 10 years and will see one lucky shopper win $5000 cash, while the business that issues the winning entry receives $1000 free advertising. To get in the draw, simply shop at any of the participating retailers in Richmond, fill out an entry form and put it in the

Shop ‘n’ Win box. Last year, the Richmond-based competition received 65,000 entries and Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says he is expecting another big year. Local retailer Westmeat has been a supporter of the competition ever since it started, the team crossing their fingers for one of their loyal customers to win the cash prize next year. “Westmeat greatly enjoys being part of the Shop ‘n’ Win competition as it’s our way of saying thank you to customers

for a whole year of support and patronage,” says staff member Bernadette Johns. Retailers participating in the competition are easy to identify, simply look for the Shop ‘n’ Win poster in their front window or check out the list of amazing businesses on page 11 of this paper. The Waimea Weekly Shop ‘n’ Win competition runs from December 27 until January 24, 2018. So get shopping, support local businesses and be in to win.

“A number of times I made a resolution to give up smoking. It never worked because of the New Year’s resolution, but I did manage to give up eventually.”

“Every year I make a resolution, usually related to fitness or travelling somewhere on my bucket list. I make an effort to meet most of them.”

“I never set a New Year’s resolution because I know I’d never follow it through.”

“I’ve thought about it, but I’ve never really set them because I know people just don’t stick to them.”

Not built for speed

Mayor’s Christmas Message

Judene Edgar

Richard Kempthorne

Now that Queen St is back open again until February, motorists are taking the opportunity to come and see its new look. However, community constable Kyle Abbott says that people need to remember that it is now a 30km zone. Tasman District Council reduced the speed limit on Queen St, from Gladstone Rd to Salisbury Rd, and along Sundial Square from 50km to 30km in August. However, due to the ongoing roadworks, most motorists were not aware of the change. “With the road opening and the slower speed environment, people need to know that it’s only 30km,” says Kyle. “It’s an area now for pedestrians, just as much as vehicles.”

Council has installed signs on Queen St near the corner of Salisbury Rd and Gladstone Rd, as well as on Wensley Rd and the exit of the Upper Queen St shopping complex carpark, but Kyle says that the signs are small and that many people don’t really notice them. “While the new layout lends itself to a slower speed, a lot of people are speeding, particularly between Salisbury and Wensley roads.” Police have also had reports of a number of near-misses on the wider footpaths. Due to the absence of a footpath kerb motorists are using the footpaths to perform U-turns or are driving up on the footpaths while parking. “Without the kerbs, cyclists and motorists need to be even more aware of pedestrians.”

Senior Constable Susan Finigan is urging motorists to reduce their speed on Queen St. Photo: Judene Edgar.

It is the time of year for reconnecting with family and friends, reflecting on the achievements of the past 12 months, and enjoying summer in one of the best places in the country. This year, 2017, has been one of the busiest years for the council that I can remember. Councillors and staff have worked extremely hard over the past 12 months and I am proud that this hard work has been rewarded with significant progress in a number of areas to benefit our community. Included among these are a new Freedom Camping Bylaw on its way, work towards a secure water supply for our urban and rural communities, responding to population growth pressures, improved recycling facilities, water quality improvements – among many other things. I am always particularly proud to

be Mayor of Tasman District at this time of year, because every year I hear of so many of you volunteering your time or resources to people in our communities who are less fortunate. Summer also reminds us how lucky we are to live in this district, and often gives us the chance to show visiting family and friends the many special places and experiences we have nearby. I hope you get the chance to make the most of it, and that many of you can take a break from work and the usual daily stresses. For those of you who continue to work in our retail, hospitality, tourism and service industries – thank you. We could not offer locals and visitors such memorable experiences, year-round, without you. Whatever your plans are this holiday season, stay safe, look out for one another and I wish you all a very prosperous New Year.

What made news in 2017 2017 has been another busy year. From the opening of a new RSA room at Willow Bank Heritage Village, to vandalism at the Radio Controlled Car Club – here are a few snippets of the stories that made the headlines this year. QUEEN ST UPGRADE The $11million Queen St upgrade started on February 7, designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent flooding. Ageing water and wastewater pipes, and telecommunications and power services, are also being replaced. The upgrade has been hit with significant delays and cost over-runs and has left Richmond businesses struggling to cope with the disruption. FREEDOM CAMPING The Wakefield community and Baigent family were successful in getting freedom camping banned from the Edward Baigent Memorial Reserve. Donated by the Baigent family in memory of Wakefield’s founding father Edward Baigent, the reserve had been damaged by rubbish, fires and human waste. Over 100

Going all the way? Richmond’s Queen St is now open all the way. You can once again... drive up… or down, stop… or go, park... or leave, shop… or look, drink… or eat. You choose. Over 50 shops and a great mall open 7 days, packed full of interesting stuff and so many cafes and coffee houses they’re worth a visit on their own. All the way down Queen St.

MCGAZZALAND BECOMES REALITY In August this year, Waimea Weekly brought local people the news that a group of Wakefield residents were working towards creating a complex to be known as McGazzaland, a tribute to Nelson’s world-famous freestyle mountainbiker Kelly McGarry. Kelly died tragically in early 2016 after suffering a cardiac arrest while biking in Queen-

stown. In November this year, work got underway on McGazzaland, which will encompass a jump track for bikers, a second track out of asphalt and a skatepark. RICHMOND CEMETERY VANDALISM In September, the Waimea Weekly reported on two incidents of vandalism at Richmond Cemetery, which saw over 70 grave damaged. Two youths were found to be responsible and were made to face up to the families affected.

No beach fires this summer Late-night summer bonfires on the beach are off limits this year due to the high fire risk. “We have high fire danger conditions across the region,” says principal rural fire officer Ian Reade. “Any time a wind over 20kmh exists, these conditions climb to extreme.” Fire permits across the Nelson Tasman region have been cancelled, with the exception of the Nelson Lakes and Murchison areas. “No fire permits except in the Lakes Murchison area are being issued due to the conditions, and this includes beach fires in Golden and Tasman Bays,” Ian says. “This year there is a 9.30pm high tide on New Year’s Eve. With tides at this time it tends to push any fires being lit dangerously close to the beach front vegetation.” Grass drying rates are at the point where unirrigated land is at risk of a fire start from sparks and hot objects including vehicle and motorbike exhausts. “People need to be diligent when working and recreating in the outdoors.” Users of mountainbike and walking tracks are asked to be mindful that if a fire starts below them, it may be difficult for them to get out of the way of a fire. It is suggested that people use these areas either in the cooler mornings or later evenings when the fire danger is at its lowest point of the day. Access to commercial forests and high-risk areas is also being shut down. “If there isn’t any significant rain for several more weeks there will be further shut downs of access to walking and mountainbiking areas,”

Cemetery vandals face their victims The two youths who damaged around 70 headstones at the Richmond cemetery in September have faced their victims. Nelson Bays Youth Aid sergeant Charlie Parfitt says that a Family Group Conference was held for the two youths on December 12. “The conference was attended by 40 to 50 victims who were all related to deceased persons whose graves were damaged.” Following what was described as a “robust and positive process”, agreement was reached at the conference and plans formulated, and these matters will now proceed through the Youth Justice system.

says Ian. “Every catastrophic fire starts as a spark - let’s not let that happen in our region.” Homeowners living in rural locations or close to scrub or forest areas are advised to take precautions in case a fire starts nearby. For more information go to www.fireandemergency.nz

Christmas around the world For many Nelsonians, Christmas is a time spent decorating trees, wrapping and unwrapping presents, playing Snoopy’s Christmas too many times, and leaving milk and cookies out for Santa. But the multicultural nature of our region means there are many other different traditions being celebrated too. Kate Russell spoke to three immigrants who are bringing aspects of their culture into their kiwi Christmas this year.

Switzerland: Andrea Goodwin arrived in New Zealand 18 years ago from Switzerland and, although she is married to a New Zealander, she still incorporates her homeland into her Christmas. With two young children, she says it’s important to carry on those Christmas traditions. “In Switzerland Santa is known as 'Samichlaus' who has an assistant called ‘Schmuzli’, and they visit on 6 December,” says Andrea. “He’ll turn up and tell the kids what they have done good or bad and give them some goodies – normally nuts and mandarins, and we do this with other families in Nelson.” Christmas is also celebrated on Christmas Eve, where candles are

lit on the Christmas tree and presents are opened. “On the sixth, we also make little men out of sweet brioche-type

That is very traditional.” Andrea says it can be “tricky” to incorporate these traditions into the New Zealand way of doing Christmas. “But, it definitely adds another layer to our celebrations,” she adds.

Bhutan: Bipan Pradhan, his wife Anjana, and their 19-year-old daughter Pragya are a refugee family from Bhutan, who have been in Nelson for three years. Bipan is Bhutanese of Nepalese origin, and Anjana is Nepalese. The family practice the Hindu religion. “We celebrate two festivals Dashain, in October, and Tihar, known as Bhai Tika, in November,” says Bipan. “Our Christmas celebration is somewhat similar to Bhai Tika, there is not much difference, we play Deusi and Bhailoh like Christmas carols, going from house to house singing and dancing, and, of course, there is a get together for a celebration.” Their Christmas this year will involve a big celebration with their community, involving dancing, prayer, singing, dressing up and Bhutanese/Nepalese food. They give each other presents, but they don’t usually practice any typical western Christmas celebrations - although Pragya says there are many in their community who have “embraced” some Kiwi traditions. Philippines: Marie Lindaya moved to New

Zealand from the Philippines 28 years ago and now lives in Richmond. Even though she has been here for nearly three decades, she still celebrates Christmas in true Filipino fashion. “People in the Philippines like to celebrate Christmas for as long as

Marie says Christmas for her is a mixture of western and native Filipino traditions. “We have Santa, Christmas trees, cards and carols - but we also have our own traditions such as the ‘parol’, which is a bamboo pole or frame with a lighted star lantern on it. She says Christmas Eve is important and many people stay awake all night, going to church for mass, followed by a midnight feast called ‘Noche Buena’ that includes lechon (roasted pig), ham, fruit salad, rice cakes and steamed rice. Marie has also been volunteering at both the Nelson and Richmond community Christmas dinners for many years and, if she’s not overseas visiting family, that’s where she’ll be. She also joins the Filipino community in the region each year for a get-together at St Marys Church. Marie says regardless of where you come from, keeping traditions provides a source of identity and pride of who we are, where we came from and celebrating our culture. “It helps tell our story, the influence of colonisers and other countries towards us and how it blended with our own original tradition.”

Our top ten things to do and see... One of the biggest attractions of the Nelson-Tasman region is the stunning outdoors, we’ve got hundreds of hectares of pristine native bush, lakes, rivers, mountains and beaches all on our back doorstep. So, we’ve put together a list of our Top 10 outdoor places that will make for a memorable and enjoyable day trip. 1. Tahunanui Beach There’s no question that Tahunanui Beach is one of Nelson’s hottest holi-

day spots. Not only is it a beautiful beach with safe swimming opportunities, it’s just a stone’s throw from the city. There’s also plenty to do beside swimming, building sandcastles and sunbathing. The beach is right next door to the iconic Lions playground, Natureland Zoo, Pro Karts, fun park, hydroslide and much more, with Moana Stand Up Paddle Board and Kitesurf Nelson also on site, hiring out equipment to

those who are a little more adventurous. Head to the back beach for a walk with your dog, have a game on the tennis, volleyball or petanque courts or check out some of the great food and beverage providers, there’s just so much to do in Tahunanui.

Tahunanui Beach. 2. Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park The Nelson-Tasman region is renowned for its mountain biking, with hundreds of kilometres of man-made trails meandering through stunning scenery. There are a huge number of choices including Dun Mountain, Codgers, Silvan and, of course, Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park. The parks network of tracks has increased dramatically since the first stage was completed in 2009 and now has 28 trails ranging from the grade

two Easy Rider that connects to the Great Taste Trail, right through to the advanced trails like Skullduggery. One of the parks most popular loops is the twisting, turning climb up Ziggy and Corkscrew, leading to a spectacular outlook over Kaiteriteri beach, with a sweeping return ride down Jaws. Get on your bike and see for yourself. 3. Rabbit Island Rabbit Island truly is a unique jewel in the region’s crown, offering people a vast sandy beach, safe waters to swim in and a great network of cycle tracks connecting to Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. The beach features picnic areas, barbeque facilities, toilets and a boat ramp, not to mention the Mapua Ferry which takes people from Rabbit Island across to Mapua, where you’ll find great shopping and dining opportunities. 4. Te Waikoropupu Springs Te Waikoropupū Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold-water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and

contain some of the clearest water ever measured. Located in the Takaka Valley, around six kilometres west of Takaka township, Te Waikoropupu Springs is home to a number of native creatures including the long-finned and short-finned eel, koaro and a healthy population of giant kokapo, one of New Zealand’s most threatened native fish. Within the forest areas birds like the fantail, bellbird, tui and kereru are observed in the wetlands, while grey duck, white heron and the black shag are regular visitors to the water.

6. Whispering Falls Located in Mount Richmond Forest Park and accessed via Aniseed Valley, the Whispering Falls track makes for a great day trip. While the walk itself takes you through some pleasant scenery, the real reward is arriving at the beautiful Whispering Falls waterfall. The first (lower) waterfall is reached five minutes after the last bridge, while the second (upper) waterfall is a further five minutes. The walk is easy and recommended for families with kids, and if you’re looking for a picnic spot, head five minutes past the upper waterfall and enjoy your lunch on top of the hill. 7. Mapua Wharf Mapua has seen some big changes over the years that have transformed its old wharf into a fantastic hospitality and craft hub. It also offers a wonderful variety of activities that the whole family can enjoy and is connected to Rabbit Island via the Mapua Ferry, for those making the most of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. Take a leap off the wharf or throw in a line and try catch a fish, wander through the shops and galleries or relax in the café’s and restaurants that serve up fantastic food and drink. 8. Maitai Caves The walk to the Maitai Caves is largely flat, on a well-formed track and takes people through some beautiful mature beech and podocarp forest. The last section of the track is much steeper, however, this only lasts for 10 minutes before you arrive at the entrance to the limestone caves.

The caves are steep-sided and, even in dry weather, they can be slippery, so take care if you’re venturing inside. The first cave is about 15 metres long with a second smaller chamber behind it. Make sure you bring a torch, so you can fully explore this spectacular place. 9. Grampians The Grampians are the big rolling hills behind Nelson, with pockets of regenerating native vegetation and exotic trees. A moderately hard walk, the Grampians offer people views out to the marina, the central city and the Boulder Bank, starting at the corner of Brougham and Collingwood Streets or from the centre of town walk via Selwyn Place and Collingwood St. At the top of Collingwood St there is a map of the Grampians, detailing the numerous tracks you can follow.

From the car park, a short walk takes you to the cave and the beautiful deep, clear pool where the Riwaka River emerges from the depths of the Takaka Hill.

Maiden Jeans acoustic duo James Mead and Dianne Sutherland will be playing at The Villa every weekend lunch-time in January. Photo: Supplied. over 100 hours a week - not the New Zealand lifestyle they were after. So, a year ago they packed their bags and shifted to Wakefield. The Villa café opened in February offering a selection of handcrafted, German-inspired cakes and pastries, tea and coffee, wines and beers and, best of all, great hospitality. Adding a small kitchen, they also opened The Daily Exchange, in the former The Treasure Box shop. The Daily Exchange provides a selection of German sausages, cured meats, cheeses, finest oils and vinegars, as well as handcrafted chocolates from New Zealand and around the world. The Daily Exchange also doubles as a function room allow-

ing for group bookings and parties. A chance meeting led to the introduction of music at The Villa’s in March. UK-based acoustic duo Maiden Jeans, featuring expatriate Dianne Sutherland and her UK partner James Mead, add to The Villa’s atmosphere playing country, folk and easy-listening music weekend lunch-times. Michael and Marleen are taking a well-earned break over Christmas but say that they will be back open Tuesday, January 2, for the Wakefield Community Craft Fair. “The shop will be stocked with some wonderful things for people to buy and they can come and enjoy some live music and have something to eat.”

Wakefield Community Craft fair

The Wakefield Community Craft Fair has a long history in the Wakefield community, in fact, it’s been held on the second of January for the last 40 years. It started out originally as a community market, incorporating talented crafters, producers and artists from Burke’s Bank to the bottom of Spooners Range. Over the years it has gained many new stallholders and grown significantly, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, through to sewn and knitted products, jewellery and much more. The fair’s organising committee is on a mission to create an event once again that celebrates the talent of the Wakefield community and, of course, it will be held on January 2, 2018. “We’re focusing on local

“We are absolutely stoked – another step closer to putting Wakefield on the map,” says Michael. “Everyone has been so supportive.” The judges used the results of people’s choice voting, their expertise and local café knowledge to help seek out the top cafés in the country. Judges visited the cafés in November in a “mystery shopper” format. Michael says that they didn’t know who was coming or when, but knows to expect another visit sometime before the national winner is announced in February. “It was always about more than just The Villa, it’s about working with the community to help make Wakefield a destination.” Before opening The Villa in February, Michael and Marleen worked in five-star hotels in Switzerland, Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Caribbean and on cruise liners, but the simpler life in New Zealand beckoned. Shifting to Auckland 10 years ago, Marleen worked at the Langham and OTT Patisserie, Auckland’s best German bakery and pastry shop. Michael’s skills were in hot demand at The Hilton and Langham hotels and then as head chef for catering company Collective Hospitality. However, Michael was back working

Each year people drown in New Zealand waters who may have been saved if they had been wearing a lifejacket, says the Coastguard. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade campaign, which went nationwide for the first time last year, saw over 4500 lifejackets traded in for new across the country in an effort to help keep boaties safe on the water. Since the campaign started three years ago, over 7000 lifejackets have been traded in, meaning thousands of boaties are now safer on the water. “Lifejackets save lives, it’s as simple as that,” says Coast-

guard New Zealand CEO Patrick Holmes. “Two-thirds of recreational boating fatalities would likely be prevented if lifejackets were worn - a lifejacket has never ruined a day on the water.” The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade van will be visiting over 35 major boat ramps and locations around the country throughout the busy summer holiday period, laden with lifejackets. The van will be at the Kerr Bay boat ramp in St Arnaud, Thursday, January 4, from 1pm to 4pm. It will then be at the Akersten St boat ramp in Nelson on Saturday, January 20, from 9am to 1pm, and on Sunday, January 21, at Bays Boating in Motueka from

8am to 11am and at the Kaiteriteri beach front opposite the campsite from 1pm to 4pm. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to update their lifejackets,” says Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison. “We got two for the family last year, and they’re great.” All you have to do is bring your old or damaged lifejacket to the Old4New team at the van and receive a discount on a quality, modern, and fit-for-purpose Hutchwilco lifejacket. Boaties and members of the public can also get advice about boating and water safety from the friendly team. According to the Coastguard, only 70 per cent of

boaties say they wear a lifejacket at all times when out on the water. This rate is highest for kayakers and canoeists (83 per cent), and falls to just over 60 per cent for people in power boats and 55 per cent for people in sail boats. “We advise people to wear them at all times – things can happen very quickly, and you don’t always have time to reach for them,” says Wayne. The Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade is proudly funded by Maritime New Zealand with support from the Southern Trust, in conjunction with generous support from kiwi companies Hutchwilco and the Giltrap Group. Baseballers get noticed At the completion of a successful season, Nelson Baseball sees three of its members head out of town on national gigs. Cooper Grant, 13, and Reegan Lawton, 14, are this week training as part of the NZ U15 squad. The final cut of this squad will be named as the national side to play in the Oceania U15 qualifier in Auckland from January 18 to 21, 2018. Their team mate Harrison Kroos, 15, has been selected to play for a New Zealand U16 selection team in the Gold Coast Summer Classic Baseball Tournament, in January. Coach Marty Grant acknowledged the players had put in the effort and training and it had paid off in their selection. Nelson Heat Baseball Club president Tom Kroos said all the region’s players had seen marked improvements over the spring season and it was pleasing to see some of them being noticed at national level. The three boys are also part of the baseball team that is currently topping the senior men’s

Why don’t people appreciate the kahawai?

The humble kahawai When I fished Tasman Bay waters for the first time I couldn’t believe it. There were thousands of fish that made the water boil, they were easy to catch, tasted good and put up a hell of a fight when hooked. Yet the locals seemed to ignore the massive work ups. That was half a dozen years ago, and I still don’t understand why people don’t appreciate the humble kahawai more. Especially at this time of the year when other table fish are oftentimes few and far between these fish provide exceptional fishing on light gear. A kingy of the same weight couldn’t fight any harder. Try the morning hours in the area between the radio mast and Pepin Island (but stay out of the marine reserve) and chase the

birds who reliably indicate where to find the fish. Small, slim spinners, skirted lures or micro jigs work a treat, but change trebles to large single hooks, otherwise you will get a spectacular kahawai airshow but hardly any fish in the bin. Cast or troll the lures and don’t forget to let the kids have a go too! Bleed them and put them on ice immediately to get a perfect result and give the raw fillets a try; either thinly sliced as sashimi with soy sauce and wasabi or marinated island style as ika mata – you won’t regret it, I promise. Otherwise just fry them, mince them for fish patties and pies or, of course, chuck them in the smoker – divine. Dominik Berghamer

It’s a long hot summer. Water temperatures are up significantly and our local fish don’t like it. They go deep. So you must fish deep into the cooler water. That includes berley. Try and get it down as low as possible. And a bit of etiquette, don’t fish some other boats berley trail, yup some of you are! Make lots of space and besides its much more peaceful that way.

Mixed year for sport Andrew Board 2017 was the sporting year that might just be looked back on as the one that set up future glories. As a sporting year for Nelson, 2017 didn’t quite get there, really. Of our top teams, Tasman United, Nelson Giants and Tasman Makos, only the Makos had a season they’d like to remember, despite losing its third NPC final in just four years. As a host, Nelson’s only Blackcaps games will be on December 29 against the West Indies, with last summer’s games falling in 2016. We didn’t host any major games at Trafalgar Park, outside of the Makos, and the Black Sticks didn’t come either. We did host the inaugural Netball World Club Championships at Trafalgar Centre and fortunately they will be back

next year. In the club scene, not one club dominated the major codes. In senior club rugby, Waimea Old Boys won the Tasman Trophy with Nelson winning the Nelson Bays competition. In football it was FC Nelson which scraped home in the Nelson Bays Football first division and in netball Jacks OPD came away with the championship. In senior cricket it was undoubtedly Stoke/Nayland’s year, winning a total of three titles including this month’s 110-over competition. Of the locals doing well, Nelson Sports Award winner and rower Zoe McBride is an obvious standout, alongside bowls’ Shannon McIlroy, All Blacks Liam Squire, David Havili and Kane Hames, cyclists Jack Bauer and George Bennett. In fact, George was arguably the region’s best-performing

Nelson Tasman is a boaties’ paradise and nearly half of all adult Kiwis head out onto the water in a boat each summer. Unfortunately, Maritime New Zealand says that, on average, 20 boaties die each year on New Zealand’s waters. Tasman Harbourmaster Dan Cairney says that the key is preparation, because the buck stops with the skipper, no matter how big or small your boat is. “Boating safety doesn’t happen by chance, you need to prepare your boat, check your gear and know the rules and weather conditions,” he says.

“The weather can change very quickly so always check the forecast before you go and on NowCasting channels when you are out there.” Dan says that it’s important to use a marine weather forecast because land forecasts don’t take into account wind speed over water or wave size. There is also a MetService Marine App that you can download for free. You need to ensure that there is one lifejacket, in the right size, for each person onboard. However, lifejackets and communications work together. Wearing your lifejacket, you are much less likely to drown, but if you can’t call for help no one knows to rescue you, and then hypothermia becomes a serious

risk. Dan recommends taking at least two waterproof forms of communication with you – VHF radio, cellphone, distress beacons (EPIRB or PLB) and flares or torches. “You also need to let people know where you are going, who’s with you, and when you expect to be back.” Research from Maritime New Zealand found that 34 per cent of users of powered vessels and 38 per cent of sail boats users consumed alcohol while on the water. The Safer Boating Forum has identified alcohol as one of the key risk factors in fatal and nonfatal boating accidents. Dan says that the best rule of thumb is to wait until you’re back on dry land before having a drink.

“Alcohol affects your judgement and it changes how your body reacts if you are plunged into the water,” says Dan. Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison says that they will be on standby 24/7 throughout the summer period “in case things go wrong”. A key focus for water safety this year is local knowledge, and Dan says that Tasman’s Guide to Boating and Water Sports in Tasman District is a great place to start. Essential safety equipment checklist: • Lifejackets – the correct size for each person • Communication equipment – two waterproof methods • Navigation – charts, plotter, GPS, depth sounder, lights

• Alternative power – a spare outboard or oars • Bailing system – bucket, bailer or bilge pump • An anchor – with three to six metres of chain • Fire extinquisher – stored within reach of the deck or cockpit • First aid kit – basic kit for minor accidents or injuries • Torch - spare bulb and batteries • Throwline – for person overboard • Fuel – take one-third to get there, one-third to return and one-third in reserve. More information about local boating conditions, tides, harbours and rules can be found at tasman. govt.nz/recreation/boating-fishing/ or nelson.govt.nz/recreation/ recreation/boating-and-fishing.

For some reason he wasn’t nominated for the Nelson Sports Awards but is the region’s sole representative in the Halberg Awards. But for all the lack of great sporting moments in 2017, it could be the year that set up a big year of sport for our region. 2018 will be the year the All Blacks play its first-ever test match in Nelson and it will be the year our lawn bowlers aim for gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. It might also just prove to be the year our top teams bounce back. The Mike Pero Nelson Giants are already putting together a better team than they had last year and could this be the year the Makos earn their first premiership?

Helpers are currently being sought for cricket ODI games at Saxton Oval this summer, to ensure everything runs smoothly as people cheer on the Blackcaps. Many of these unsung volunteers have been doing it season after season because they love the game and want to give something back to it. Errol Millar is a prime example. The 71-year-old has devoted more than 30 years to sport as a rugby referee, cricket umpire and Trafalgar Park scoreboard operator. He is still umpiring senior club cricket and is one of the many Saxton Oval stalwarts who put their hand up every year when Sport Tasman calls for

helpers. He and his fellow volunteers will again play a key part in making sure our two cricket internationals over summer are a hit. They will show you where to park your car, check your bags, help you to your seat and point out where to find everything. They will keep the ground tidy and even assist with getting the covers on and off in the event of a weather break in play.

years he’s helped with crowd support and comfort on the embankment, although he says Nelson spectators are well-behaved compared to bigger venues. Errol also enjoys working with the other volunteers and says he has met a lot of good people. Forty-five helpers are required for both the T20 match against the West Indies on December 29 and the one-day interna-

Tasman Bay Food Group Managing Director Marina Hirst Tristram says Juicies is all about summer, sport and families, so the opportunity to partner with Nelson Cricket was too good to miss. “We’re big sports fans so we’re really excited to be helping grow and support cricket in the region. Fish are popping up all around Waimea Intermediate thanks to a new initiative trying to highlight the connection between our homes and businesses, and our streams and waterways. The fish stencils are being spray painted by Waimea Intermediate students beside the drains in the school to help make students more aware of where the rubbish that gets put down our drains goes. Part of the school’s ‘survival and sustainability’ theme for the term, students have also designed posters that are being put up around the school so that other students understand why the stencils are there. “You’re not meant to wash your cars on the driveway because all of the chemicals wash into the drains, which goes out to the sea,” says Waimea Intermediate student Tom Lams. Tasman District Council environmental education officer, Adie Leng, says that the programme is designed to

tional against Pakistan on January 9, while a smaller group is needed for New Zealand A’s encounter against Pakistan on January 3. This is in addition to a large crew who get the ground ready by doing such

tasks as erecting canopies and signage and numbering seats. Sport Tasman events organiser Jane Miles, whose job it is to assemble the volunteers, says it is usually no problem getting enough people for the cricket. "This bunch is really keen. They come from all areas and many are retirees who have extra hours to devote to community projects. "Many are former cricketers keen to give back to the sport and who want to see Saxton Oval continue to get such matches. Others do it because they like the interaction with the public and enjoy welcoming visitors to the region, and some do it as it is a great day out where they also get to watch an international game.’’ Volunteers are provided with a uniform, food and drink, and there is a follow-up meal as a thank-you. "We are very lucky to have such a keen and active database of volunteers who are vital to the whole operation and whom we really appreciate,’’ says Jane. "They are like a big family and there may be others out there who want to be part of this.’’

I’d be devastated if my dog got sick because of someone’s ignorance or arrogance.” Jimmy Lee Creek flows into the Washbourn Gardens pond, which is part of the stormwater system. Council staff visited the pond last week to check on the unusually high levels of algae. While the warm, dry weather and increased sediment levels in the pond are all contributing to the algal levels, resource scientist Trevor James says, “feeding the ducks, fertilising lawns and washing cars, all impact on stormwater ponds such as Washbourn Gardens”. Councillor Dana Wensley says that both the community and council need to play a role in protecting our waterways.

Thunder aiming for NZ title Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Tasman Thunder has named an experienced line-up to head to Auckland for the New Zealand Stock Car teams championship on December 29 and 30. Having made the final two years ago, the team have unfinished business to try to claim the top prize and bring the event back to Nelson. The Thunder will be the only South Island team making the journey this year. Keightley Teece makes a welcome return after missing the earlier teams events. The current South Island champion claimed fifth spot at last year’s New Zealand individual title. His inclusion will bolster the lineup. Michael Paynter leads from the front. The quiet assassin knows how to use the bumper but is equally at home setting the pace. Brad Neiman generally takes up the lead. He will be on the pace and is crafty at avoiding trouble. Adam Hall does what needs to be done in the block role, making a

reserve. He has stepped up this year, racing for the KB Indians team last year he learnt quickly to become a regular member for the Thunder this season. He will have to step in if one of the other drivers gets injured. Craig Tatnell and John Everett have been the other members of the Thunder team this season but

were unavailable for Auckland,. Mel Heine manages the team again this year. The format this year is a four car line-up and a reserve. While traditionally it’s normally five cars racing and a reserve, the Thunder have been racing the four-car format in the events to date, which could be a strate-

gic advantage heading into the championship. They will be put into qualifying groups on the first night with points being awarded for the top five finishing spots. The second night will be first car past the post wins. The winner will then advance to a semi and final. The team that wins the title also gets to host the event the following year. The Thunder made the final two years ago but were defeated on night two against Rotorua last year, who eventually lost to Auckland in the final. The Thunder won the Teams Brawl here in Nelson in November and were on the end of an unlucky referee’s call in Christchurch to miss the final a week later. They will be one of the most experienced team’s at this year’s title and head north with high expectations. The Tasman Thunder Stock Car team would like to thank their sponsors, Deans Truck Services, BNT Richmond, Image Creators, Richmond Fibreglass, Supercharge Batteries, Imagepress Photography, and the Nelson Speedway Association.

White water wonder Most of the 250 plus competitors at the weekend’s Buller Festival were from out of town, but Nelson boy Tommy McDowell made sure he was up there with the best – taking out the C1 open men’s slalom. The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s premier white water event and attracted a large crowd of out-of-town competitors – including a former Olympian from the UK. The festival started off with the popular boater cross, an event which sees kayakers race together down the river. Over the course of the weekend there was also kayak and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP race and the classic cardboard cup, which involves making a vessel out of cardboard and tape and taking it down the river. The event is held every year and

I don’t think they’ve sold as much bread, meat and beer as they did this weekend.”

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wensley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural residential subdivision in Wakefield are the latest developments to get the green light as the Tasman district continues to grow. By Tim O’Connell While the rest of the South Island encountered rain, snow and pestilence it was typical Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri Beach on Sunday as hundreds descended on the shoreline for the Riwaka School Mid-Winter Festival. Bands, performances and the standard array of hot and tasty food made for a welcome way to spend a winter morning, while children were entertained by bouncy castles, mini jeeps and trains as well as a big dig for

prizes around the golden sands. The main attractions of the day were the mid-winter dip and the duck race, both of which drew plenty of entries from locals and out of towners keen to support Riwaka School. Fairies, bumblebees and superheroes were among the costumes on display as the swimmers gathered for the former. Jeanette Clark from Lower Moutere was found in pre-plunge contemplation of the icy fate that awaited her. “Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of mine,” she said. With the tide in for the 11am start of the dip there was a very short run from the shore to the ocean, leaving the hundred or so brave folk who entered little time to chicken out. Admirably, a handful managed to remain in the water for an extended period of time to milk the moment, although it should be noted that most of these people were female. For the rest however, the sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone abruptly hitting the rewind button on a DVD. The duck race was a slightly more drawn out affair, yet attracted just as much interest as the earlier event, although it wasn’t long before the nature of inanimate object racing set in and a good portion of the entered ducks were soon bobbing listlessly in the lagoon, Speaking to the Guardian after an extremely successful day in the sun, Riwaka School Principal Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the event. “There was just a real good buzz around the place and a real connection between the community and school,” he said. Showing leadership and immense fortitude, Mr Campbell took to the water for the dip along with Deputy Principal Katherine Sefton, a feat which he says was “better than coffee”. The Mid-Winter Festival raised close to $9000 for the school, a total which is believed to be up on previous years.
