Forest fire concert all go

The public now have an opportunity to say thank you to all the first responders and volunteers who helped fight the Pigeon Valley forest fire. The fire was the largest forest fire in New Zealand history, blazing for several weeks and causing residents across Pigeon, Teapot and Redwood valleys, along with Wakefield, to evacuate their homes. Fortunately, responders were able to protect homes and families, with only one house destroyed. It is proposed that on Saturday, March 23, there be a parade down Queen Street for all the responders and volunteers who helped in the effort, across the board, ranging from firefighters and police, to any volunteers who lent a hand in some form or another. The public are invited to come down and cheer on the marchers. The parade will end with an outdoor concert at the A&P showgrounds, organised by Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page in conjunction with the Tasman District Council, and supported by a wealth of other local businesses such as NBS and the Richmond Mall.

Forest fire concert all go Local ladies aid evacuees FROM PAGE 1 Alongside several local bands, acclaimed New Zealand rock band Warratahs are set to perform, known for their hits such as Hands of my Heart and Maureen, both have which become Kiwi classics. The band has said they are “really looking forward to getting up and performing.” Steve says the concert is a way of saying thank you to all of the fantastic volunteers and responders who worked hard to fight the fire. “This is your concert. Bring yourselves and your family along and enjoy what is going to be a great afternoon of some of the most iconic music heard in this town for a long time.” The concert will be free for all responders and volunteers and their immediate family. It will be $10 per person for the general public.
The cost of putting on the event is being paid for by sponsorship from local businesses, so “100 per cent of the $10 you pay to get in goes towards the mayoral relief fund,” says Steve. He says the event is not only a great opportunity to say thank you to all the responders and volunteers who helped fight the forest fire, but also to celebrate the end of a traumatic and challenging time and put on a “great party for everyone to enjoy.” People are encouraged to bring chairs and picnic blankets. There will be food vendors on-site, or people can bring their own food. No alcohol is allowed. There will be more details to follow in coming weeks. If you are a local band and you want an opportunity to give back and play for a large crowd, or if you are a local business and you want to help sponsor this event, you can contact sales@ waimeaweekly.co.nz
Matt McCrorie Members of the Stoke/Tahunanui Inner Wheel group were a part of the community effort to give back and help those evacuated from their homes due to the Pigeon Valley fire. Gathered in Richmond at the home of Ruth Bagnall, members made and filled toilet bags for families who were evacuated from their homes. Inner Wheel is an international women’s organisation and its Stoke/Tahunanui club decided that they had the resources and the time to help. Ruth says that toiletries are a basic need that sometimes gets overlooked, and that they were trying to make sure that everyone who was evacuated had access to basic hygiene products. “We wanted to do something to help, so we called up Civil

One of the companies really feeling the heat of the Pigeon Valley fires is Tasman Pine. The company owns 60 per cent of the plantations lost in the Pigeon valley forest fires, which is roughly 1400 hectares out of the 2343ha burnt. Chief operating office Steve Chandler was appointed to his new role mid-January and says his start at the job has been an “interesting one”. Tasman Pine is yet to make estimates as to the cost of the damage caused by the fire, with Steve saying that once the fire is over there will be a lot of salvaging to do before the cost of the losses can be estimated. While unable to calculate the exact loss, Steve says that out of the 36,000ha that Tasman Pine owns, the plantation lost was one of the “most productive”. Around 100 employees were out of work as a result of the fires, as many loggers were deployed in fire-affected areas. “Along with that, the risk was so high last week that we had to stand down crews, etc because of the restriction,” Steve says.

Ph 541 9667 Work fighting the fires is ongoing. He says there were a large age range of trees, ranging from trees planted last year to those coming up for harvest, “so the losses would have been greater if the entire area was ready for harvest”. Before Tasman Pine can start replanting, a lot of work needs to be done. “Planning around replanting needs to happen first. A lot of dead trees and live trees are still standing, so we have to clear those first.” Steve says the job ahead needs to be undertaken with planning and caution. “Until the fire is completely out there is the risk of people walking into pockets of ember, as well as roots burning under-

ground. So work there won’t start for a while.” Steve said the effort that everybody has done in the fire is “absolutely amazing” Tasman Pine has an exemption from Civil Defence to continue logging, under very strict conditions. The forestry industry is paying for helicopters on standby, and no work continues past 1pm. “This enables some logs to flow into the industry, so we can start to get back some movement there,” Steve says. He says most large forestry companies in New Zealand don’t insure against fire and wind, because the cost outweighs the risk. Tasman Pine is one of these companies.

at about 10.15am on Thursday, and from what he was told, the fall from the roof happened about 9am the day before. It was a fall of about five to six metres, he says, as although the house is only single-storey, it is near the edge of a bank, so it was a bigger fall that it would have normally been. His neighbour was flown to Christchurch Hospital with his spinal cord broken at about shoulder height. He also needed about a litre of blood drained from his lungs and had a damaged spleen. “And he’d been in the hot sun all day, so he was pretty sunburnt.” Ambulance crew who attended told him that his neighbour would not have lasted until the end of the day, had he not been found. The experience has given him a different perspective, he says. For a start, he has painted the roof of his two-storey house a couple of times and he has never used a harness. “If I do it again, I will.” It’s also served as a reminder that it only takes a split second, and your life could be changed forever.

Broken back after fall from roof A Richmond man spent 25 hours lying in the open with a broken back before his neighbour found him - sunburnt, dehydrated and with internal injuries as well as his back. The neighbour, who does not want to be named for fear of identifying the injured man, says the ambulance crew who attended told him the man would not have lasted too much longer without help. He says he knew his neighbour was up on his roof last Wednesday morning, clearing his guttering of leaves, hoping forecast weekend rain would allow him to refill his water tank. The following morning he saw that there was still a hose and an extension cord for water blasting up on his neighbour’s roof. “Everything just looked the same as it did the day before. I thought I’d better go and check up on him. “Everything was open. There was no answer,” he says. Walking around the property he heard what he thought sounded like a sick sheep. It was actually his neighbour calling his name. He immediately called 111. He says he found his neighbour

Applications opened on Monday for people affected by the recent forest fires who want to access money from the Mayoral Relief Fund The fund was set up to support individuals and families with essential costs of daily life not covered by insurance or other funds. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the fund will help where an immediate need exists. He says the outpouring of support from communities all over the country in the wake of the Pigeon Valley fire has been incredible and the relief fund provides a further avenue of support for those in need “The eligibility to apply is reasonably wide in the hope those in real need are not in any way inhibited from gaining the support they need.” Application forms are on the Tasman District and Nelson City Councils’ websites, along with information about the criteria under which money will be distributed. “Since the fund opened for donations the government has committed $170,000 and there’s been generous support from the community through private and commercial donations,” Richard says. “And that’s not counting the contributions from the various ‘Give a Little’ pages set up around the country to support those affected by the fires.” He says the fund will be available to support local businesses whose activities have been restricted by the fires, for example, contractors not able to work due to the ban on outdoor machinery. It will also be available to help meet extraordinary costs of not-for-profit organisations providing care for animals. Addressing the problem of private land damaged in the efforts to contain and manage the fire, the government has said it will provide financial support to landowners whose land was damaged because of the essential fire-breaks. Some of the fire-breaks are likely to be in place
for some time yet and the full cost of remediation won’t be known for a while, but work is already under way to identify the likely scale of the impacts, costs and work needed. “In the meantime, if there is an immediate financial need not covered by insurance or other forms of assistance, people are advised to apply as soon as possible.” Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese says there has been a region-

firefighting effort. A Civil Defence fire update on Monday said Fire and Emergency New Zealand had achieved a 30-metre “blackout” zone around the entire perimeter of the fire, a goal they have been working towards for some time. Work is now focussed on expanding that zone to 50 metres. The location and elimination of hotspots is also ongoing.

On Sunday, the decision was made to lift the remaining cordons so access to all the affected valleys is now available. However, Civil Defence Controller Brennan Wiremu says it is important that everyone remains aware of the potential for sudden changes. “Excellent progress has been made with the fire but it is still burning and, as a result, we need valley residents to stay vigilant.”

Water shortage remains critical
The much hoped for rain across the Waimea over the weekend never really materialised, with the water shortage still critical. Urban residents and businesses connected to the reticulated supply in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield Mapua, Ruby Bay and their rural extensions remain on restrictions banning most outdoor water use and requiring a 25 per cent cut in use by businesses. These restrictions also apply to the rural water schemes of Dovedale, Eighty-Eight Valley and Redwood Valley. Outdoor water use is prohibited except: watering fruit/veges using a bucket/water can on alternate days; firefighting; and for genuine health and safety reasons. Tasman District Council acting engineering services manager Dwayne Fletcher says he is encouraged by the response from businesses and homeowners to
the call for water conservation, but more savings are needed. “We are still drawing too much water from our supplies,” Dwayne says. “Most businesses have begun reducing their water use to meet the 25 per cent cut even though many will face extra costs as a result. Don’t wait for official word to begin doing your bit – the situation is critical now and immediate action is required. “There are lots of simple ways you can save water around the house. If you haven’t already, please check out our website for some tips. “If you’d like to set a goal for your household, have a go at trying to use just 125 litres a day for each family member. Read your meter regularly to keep track. There’s info on our website about how to read your meter, and it’s a really good habit to get into so you’re aware of how much you
use. Keeping an eye on your meter will help you identify leaks as well.” Water permit holders in the Motupiko and Dovedale water zones must stop using water for anything other than essential human use and stock drinking water from Monday 25 February. A cease take direction has been issued to these areas as a critical water shortage continues for much of Tasman District. Dry Weather Taskforce convenor Dennis Bush-King says while urban water restrictions would remain the same for another week, permit holders in several water zones as well as those on the Dovedale scheme would face greater restrictions. “There is no water left in the lower reaches of the Motupiko or Dove rivers, so they will move to a cease take,” Dennis said. That means water cannot be taken for irrigation and may only be used
for human and stock health purposes. Other areas that will face increased restrictions next week include upper Motueka upstream of Woodstock, and Golden Bay, both of which move to Stage 2 rationing – a 35 per cent cut in allocation. Dennis says the situation remains serious and the prospect of some rain towards the end of the week, while welcome, is unlikely to bring immediate relief. “Everybody in our community – whether you are urban, rural, connected to the reticulated supply, with a private bore or a permit holder – needs to think extremely carefully about every drop of water you use. Please don’t irrigate fields unless you absolutely have to. It’s cheaper to buy feed than to water a paddock at the moment, so if you don’t have a commercial crop that desperately needs water right now please think twice,”
Dennis says. The current dry conditions have surpassed the previous driest period. “We have had 6.6 mm of rain in the last 55 days, he said late last week. The previous driest 55-day period was in 2001 with 17.2mm. “Soils are very dry and any water the plants are getting is coming from irrigation. This is why rationing is hurting. If you can only apply 35 per cent of your permitted allocation you have to be very careful as to where it goes.” He says the slowing rate of decline in river flow and the fact salt levels are stable probably shows the impact of the restrictions already in place and the temporary bund which has been constructed in the lower Waimea River. “That’s allowing us to keep restrictions on the Waimea Plains at their current levels rather than escalating them further at this stage.”

Electricity lines charges to fall Network Tasman is cutting its prices from April 1, with the average residential customer’s line charges falling by around $3.50 per month (including GST). The company’s cost of connecting to the national grid has fallen and it is reducing its prices to reflect this. Chief executive Oliver Kearney says, after discounts, Network Tasman’s residential prices remain the lowest of
New Zealand’s 29 electricity distribution companies (MBIE Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices, November 2018). Even before taking discounts into account, Network Tasman’s residential charges are expected to remain among the lowest in the country. He says Network Tasman is also taking the opportunity to improve the fairness of its charges so that the prices
consumers pay better reflect the costs of serving them. The effect of the changes is that a greater proportion of cost savings accrue to those consumers who have previously been paying relatively higher lines charges. The effect of these changes is that our charges will fall for 99 per cent of residential consumers, if they are on the right electricity plan, he says. Households consuming more
than 8000kWh a year should be on a ‘standard’ plan and those consuming less than 8000kWh a year should be on a ‘low user’ plan. The low user plan is limited, by regulations, to primary residences. Baches and other secondary residences do not qualify. Network Tasman recommends any users who are uncertain if they are on the correct plan contact their electricity provider.
New line pricing from 1 April 2019
T
Understanding the table below:
he prices in the table below are used to charge electricity retailers in the region served by Network Tasman. Retailers determine how to package this cost together with the energy, metering and other costs when setting the prices that appear in your power account. Our prices cover the cost of our local distribution network and the cost of national transmission of electricity.
The current Group 1 price category (15 kVA capacity) for most residential and non-residential consumers is being replaced with 3 new price categories: 1GL, 1RL and 1RS. Non-residential connections will be Price Category 1GL. The 1RL category is for primary-residence low-use connections, ie consuming less than 8,000 kWh per year. The 1RS category is for residential connections that are not a primary residence (eg bach) or consume over 8,000 kWh pa.
Network Tasman’s residential prices for the average consumer will decrease by 5% (about $3.50 incl GST per month) from 1 April 2019 to reflect decreased costs of national connection for the coming year. Discounts are credited directly to consumers’ power accounts for eligible connections twice per year. The first discount will be calculated based on usage from 1 April 2019 to 31 August 2019, the second on usage from 1 September 2019 to 31 March 2020.
Electricity retailers already classify residential connections by the primary residence/8,000 kWh threshold, and we will be using their advice to determine the new price category for each current Group 1 connection from 01 April 2019.

One of Colin Beaumont’s kumara plants flowered recently – something he had never seen before.
Flowering kumara plant a rare event The current extreme dry weather has frustrated many home gardeners in the area, but for one it has provided something rarely seen, particularly in the South Island. Colin Beaumont grows kumara, both in a pot and in his Waimea Village garden. He recently noticed that the plant he was growing in a pot had flowered, something he had never seen or heard of before. Colin says the flowers do not last long – they are gone in a day. When he spoke to the Waimea Weekly the plant had flowered twice but it looked like another would also ap-
pear soon. A search on the internet by Colin’s daughter revealed that another kumara plant flowered in Auckland about two years ago, but that was considered to be a rare event. Plant and Food Research plant breeder Steve Lewthwaite says, while it is not uncommon for orange kumara plants to flower, that was not the case with red varieties like the one Colin was growing. He says the shortening day length often had a part to play, while the hot dry weather in the Waimea this summer could also have triggered the flowering.

A ratepayer-initiated petition is calling for a poll on the voting system used to elect Tasman District councillors. The petition is seeking support for a referendum between the current first past the post (FPP) system and single transferable vote, a preferential system. The petition needs the support of 5 per cent of registered electors in the Tasman District to force the referen-
dum, which would be held as part of the local body elections later this year. Petition initiator Liz Thomas says the petition is on target to achieve that before its May deadline. “It’s taken us a year to get to this point,” she says “It’s a great opportunity for we electors to have our say on which voting system we prefer. “We want voters to think
about the benefits of moving to the proportional system.” In September 2017, under a six-yearly review required by law, Tasman District councillors voted to continue using the FPP system. However, the law also provides for ratepayer-initiated petitions. “We vote for our representatives and pay for all council operations. It should be our responsibility to choose what
system we use to elect them,” Liz says. “That’s Democracy 101!” The petition will be at Richmond Library on Thursday, February 28 between noon and 3pm, where people can call in, discuss, and, if they want, sign the petition. Tasman District Council staff will be there to answer questions people may have about local government and the upcoming elections.

The Department of Conservation is planning to use a targeted wasp baiting method to reduce wasps in public conservation land in various parts of the Tasman district. One of the areas to be targeted is around Lake Rotoiti. The focus will be on about 5000ha of public conservation land on the western slopes of the St Arnaud Range in the Nelson Lakes National Park and in the Big Bush conservation area. Wasp control will also be undertaken in the St Arnaud village, as well as at a number of recreation sites in the wider area. The operation is planned to coincide with times when wasp numbers have reached threshold amounts and wasps are known to be feeding on protein. This will happen sometime from the end of February to the end of March. The wasp poison Vespex, a paste bait incorporating an insecticide mixed into a protein matrix, will be used. Other areas being targeted include 46km of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track from Marahau to Whariwharangi hut and around huts and campgrounds along the track, and the Sylvester Lakes track.

Boat show celebrates 20 years
This weekend’s Antique and Classic Boat Show at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park celebrates 20 years of the beautiful and the bizarre among Kiwi heritage boats. At 640 metres above sea level it’s New Zealand’s highest altitude boating event, with fine craftsmanship and unusual entries continuing to attract the crowds. Organiser Pete Rainey says boat owners are willing to admit it is a bit mad to hunt down old boats abandoned in sheds and spend years sanding, polishing and tracing boat history and boat bits. “Over the years we’ve seen different styles to the fore… sometimes it’s been jet boats, sometimes clinkers and now we’re seeing a real interest in the big classic speed boats from mid-19th century, some imported and some New Zealand built,” he says. “The boat show’s consistent factors are the enthusiasm from boat lovers for a day out sharing their projects, the attraction this has for the wider public, and the really glorious setting on the shore Lake Rotoiti, with the backdrop of the St Arnaud range and Mt Robert.” Pete says the format will stick to the tried and tested.

Graeme and Diane Dutch in Beattieful, a wooden clinker runabout that won the Jens Hansen Cup for best overall boat at last year’s event. Photo: Supplied. “Why change when people love what we do? The displays on the land in the morning are an opportunity to swap restoration stories and pore over the detail of the hardy clinkers, classic yachts, cedar kayaks, veteran jet-boats and replica steam-boats on display. “Then it’s time to take your pic-
nic to the foreshore and watch the fun of the sail-past, the races for each category and the usually humorous “Le Mans” beach start to the seagull dinghy race.” A glossy hard-backed book documenting the 20-year history of the Antique and Classic Boat Show will be launched for sale at the event.
Throughout the 20-year history of the event the winner has taken home the Jens Hansen silver cup, with a smaller version of the trophy to keep. Pete says the support from the Jens Hansen workshop over the years has been outstanding, and the original cup is not only a magnificent object, but now established as a trophy well
worth winning. As the event is held in a national park and close to the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project, dogs are banned. Drones are also banned. The show is on this Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3; from 10am to 4pm, with displays on land in the morning and events on the lake in the afternoon.

Tasman Police are reminding boaties to make sure they have the right equipment on board before heading out on the water. About 9am last Friday, a group of boaties were taken by surprise when their boat overturned in the water off the coast of Marahau, near Adele Island. The four men had been distracted by a large fish, and in their enthusiasm to look at it they unbalanced the vessel, which flipped. Police Search and Rescue coordinated a marine response, which included the harbourmaster and commercial vessels, and the group was picked
up by a mussel harvester. Constable David Cogger of Tasman Search and Rescue says the group was lucky to be found, given there was initial difficulty in pinpointing their location. “The group managed to keep one cellphone dry to make an emergency call, however they were extremely lucky to have managed this. “A grab-bag containing a GPS, marine radio and some flares would have greatly assisted them and helped speed up the search and rescue operation,” David says. “It was only after police and Maritime New Zealand relayed a mayday that other ves-
sels were able to come to their assistance – this kind of delay can be the difference between life and death. “It’s a timely reminder for boaties, especially if you’re heading out into a remote location, to have the appropriate emergency and communication gear on board. “This gear can save your life if you get into trouble. “We’d like to thank those crew aboard the mussel harvester, Platinum, who stopped their workday and responded – without their help today things could have turned out quite differently.” None of the four men were injured in the incident.

Organisers of last weekend’s clean-up around the edge of Waimea Estuary were pleased with the turn-out, but not the amount of rubbish they picked up. Photo: Supplied.
Community gets behind clean-up Matt McCrorie Just under 320kg of rubbish was collected from Waimea Estuary last weekend, much of it plastic and polystyrene. It was part of a nationwide effort co-ordinated by the Green Party, with the estuary clean-up starting near The Honest Lawyer in Monaco and working its way towards Richmond. Around 100 people took part, which the Green’s Nelson spoke-
person, Matt Lawrey, says was a great turnout. One thing that did concern him was the number of cigarette butts picked up in the Whakatu Drive area, some of them near bush. “It appears that, despite the extreme fire hazard, people are still chucking butts out of the car window, which is horrifying. “Overall, though, it was a really positive exercise and a great example of the community coming together for the environment.”
One of those taking part at the estuary was Green Party co-leader and Climate Change Minister James Shaw. James says it is up to everyone - the government, businesses and the community - to protect the oceans from rubbish. “We’re busy in government tackling our mounting waste problem at the source, but right now there’s too much waste choking our sea life which we need to work together to clean up.”

The Great Taste Trail has been reopened with limited access on Moturoa/Rabbit Island from on a trial basis to enable riders to use the trail to get to and from Mapua. The Tasman District Council says it has worked closely with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Kiwi Journeys and Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust to develop a safety plan that will provide guided access across Moturoa Rabbit Island to the ferry landing. Kiwi Journeys has not only offered to provide guided access to those who will use the track to and from Mapua, they have also pledged $1 per ferry trip toward the Mayoral Relief Fund for those people affected by the Pigeon Valley fire. Closed since the recent fire, in line with the rest of Moturoa/Rabbit Island, the trail is open for guided access only to and from Mapua by bike. Access will be allowed by guided convoy where the ferry operator, Kiwi Journeys, will meet people at the
island gate and escort those groups to the ferry, and in reverse for those who have accessed the island by ferry. As the fire danger has not diminished since the island fire of February 9, the trial does not allow open access to island or the beach. A council spokesman says it hopes that in providing the trial convoy system it can provide some enjoyment of the trail and support associated businesses despite the heightened fire risk. However, it cannot risk unsupervised access and it does not have the resources to provide supervised access. The convoy will be managed by Kiwi Journeys and other companies must work with them, the spokesman says. Kiwi Journeys is responsible for the convoy’s safe operation. The council is working with FENZ to open Moturoa/ Rabbit Island beach access as soon as it is safe to do so. Go to www.facebook.com/ kiwijourneys.co.nz/ to see the ferry timetable.

Pupils gain pest control insight A group of Waimea Intermediate pupils gained some valuable practical insight into their study of pest control in the Tasman district. The pupils, who had been reading about trapping as part of their studies, were visited by Tasman District Council biosecurity officer Robin van Zoelen, who answered questions they had prepared for him. Robin told the group that the biggest pest in the area was a toss-up between possums and ship rats, although stoats were not far behind. Possums could completely defoliate particular types of trees and eat baby birds while they were up there, while the rats also had the ability to climb trees to get to bird nests. There are a range of different traps used to control pests in the district, Robin says, depending on what is being targeted. No one type of trap was 100 per cent effective, so it was important to have a few different tools in the toolbox. There are trapping operations in place across the district, he says, including around St Arnaud, Project Janszoon’’s efforts in the

New iconic building - a dream destination for peanut butter lovers!
Waimea Intermediate pupils who questioned Tasman District Council biosecurity officer Robin van Zoelen (front right) were, back row from left, Max McClelland, Amelie Purdie, Eli Newton, Eise Tijsen and Jasper Davidson, and front row, Indiana Daikee, Poppy McPherson and Keisha Bubb. Abel Tasman National Park, work around Mount Arthur and into the Cobb Valley with Friends of Flora, and the Battle for the Banded Rail around Waimea Es-
tuary, which has trapped a lot of hedgehogs. The group heard that they would be surprised the variety of different habitats were possums were
found. “They are everywhere. From sea level to above the snowline.” The pupils also questioned Robin about the use of 1080, the reasons
behind its use and its impact on wildlife other than possums. Robin also told the pupils about live capture traps, and how often they had to be checked.
Pic’s Peanut Butter World – Nelson’s newest ‘star’ attraction opened its doors to peanut butter lovers on Saturday, with throngs of people eager to see the purpose-built destination. “It was a grand occasion – we had food trucks, bouncy castles and live music, plus it was the first chance for people to look through the new building and get a birds eye view of our peanut butter being made,” says owner and founder Pic Picot. “They also got to watch the unveiling of the biggest peanut butter jar in the world!” Designed by Simon Hall of JTB Architects, Pic’s Peanut Butter World is a 3500m² building which houses a generous 500m² foyer featuring an attention-grabbing spiral staircase and public café, offices and tour mezzanine overlooking the working factory. The building, which has a unique industrial ambience, celebrates its function while also making
a significant contribution to the Stoke landscape. “Pic has an infectious enthusiasm for architecture and all things different and playful,” says Simon Hall. “Working with Pic to create his dream factory has been a fantastic process and it’s an exciting building for Nelson Tasman. Pic's Peanut Butter World is designed to celebrate all things whimsical. It can be likened to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but with peanut butter.” Visitors can see Pic’s Peanut Butter being made from the vantage point of specially-constructed viewing platforms, meet people who make their favourite spread, learn more about the owner Pic’s journey as a peanut butter maker and even make their own peanut butter. Pic’s Peanut Butter World is Pic’s way of thanking the Nelson-Tasman community for the support it has given him, his product and 42 employees

Survey considers forest’s future What the best uses are for Kingsland Forest, on Richmond’s backdoor, is the subject of a Tasman District Council survey that closes on February 28. The council is in the process of preparing a plan that will help determine future uses of the forest, taking into account its current
mix of recreation, commercial forestry and biodiversity restoration functions, and what the best mix of these will be in the future. Kingsland Forest is one of several forests owned by the council to raise revenue and reduce the demand on rates. Many of the forests, such as Moturoa/Rabbit Is-
land and Kingsland, are also key destinations for recreation. The forest covers about 100 hectares, most of which is planted with pinus radiata. A significant proportion of these trees are due to be harvested in the next few years. There are also pockets of native species within the forest
that are being restored through additional planting and pest control by active and keen volunteers. The forest also contains the ‘Barrington Gum’, a Eucalyptus regnans or mountain ash, which is reputed to be one of the tallest trees in New Zealand.
Nelson Matters
Nelsonians need to know how they will be impacted by the Government’s Capital Gains Tax (CGT) now Labour’s former Finance Minister Michael Cullen’s detailed proposal is out. It will start in April 2021, and will cost families and businesses in Nelson and Tasman $130m a year when fully implemented. The CGT will be applied to any increase in value of any asset like property, business, farm, shares or retirement investment. It does not apply to personal cars, boats, art, jewellery or wine collections. The rate of the CGT is the person’s highest rate of income tax which for most people will be
30c/$ if they earn over $48,000 p.a or 33c/$ if they earn over $70,000 p.a. This is double Labour’s previously proposed CGT of 15c/$. It makes no allowance for inflation. This makes it one of the most onerous capital tax regimes in the world. Many Nelson families will be hard hit by the detail of the CGT. It hits Nelsonian’s 50,000 Kiwisaver accounts. It applies to the family bach. It applies to the family home if one has flatmates and can apply if one has boarders, a home office, a home business or if the home is used for AirBnB. The CGT also applies to lifestyle blocks over 0.45ha
of which there are hundreds in Nelson and Tasman. This CGT is particularly tough on Nelson’s 4,000 small businesses. Every business will need to be valued including goodwill costing an estimated $20million. Any gain in value from that will now be taxed. It will be a boom for accountants, lawyers and valuers. Businesses are going to be more focussed on tax management and less on growing the region’s wealth. My first objection is that it will hurt the overall economy, costing jobs and investment. It discourages enterprise and productivity.
Stormwater from the forest flows through the Richmond urban area before reaching the sea. Any decisions on future land use will need to consider the impacts on these stormwater flows. Copies of the survey are available on the council’s website or at its Queen Street offices.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
My second objection is that New Zealand does not need a new tax or higher taxes. The Government is awash with cash from the huge surpluses and low debt left by National. The top 10% of earners already pay 70% of total income tax. My third objection is compliance cost and complexity. Members of the Government’s own tax working group say it’s a lot of cost for not much gain. My fourth objection is fairness. This CGT does not apply to the millionaire’s mansion, super yacht or art collection, but hits hard the average kiwi family if they own a bach, lifestyle block,
modest rental property, or run a small business. My fifth objection is that the CGT will push up rents. Landlords will pass the extra costs on and it will discourage investment in new rental housing. Far from encouraging more productive investment, this CGT tells people to put more of their money into owner-occupied housing. Labour’s Capital Gains Tax is driven by envy and ideology. It punishes people who work hard and take risks to get ahead. Join our campaign to stop this new tax at National Party HQ this Friday at 5pm. Advt.

Purely Cremations provides simple, intimate and affordable funeral services. Owen and the team will listen to your needs and assist in making this difficult time easier for you and your family. Professional and careing Purely Cremations was created to make funerals a lot more affordable; while still being professional and caring. We focus on what the family wants rather than what we can sell them. We provide a wooden pine coffin, cremation, paperwork, transportation, death certificate, newspaper notice and return the ashes personally to the family all for one price - $2500. We allow families to decide how much they want to be involved
in the process of the funeral. For some they want to be involved every step of the way; while others prefer not to. With cremations a memorial service can happen, at any time and in anyway. A party, a service, a walk along the beach… whatever suits the family. Purely Cremations works with the family giving listening to their needs and assisting their wishes. So far all our families have been very pleased with our service and for us that is everything.

critical water shortage WE ALL NEED TO DO OUR BIT
Drought conditions mean many areas of Tasman District are now facing a critical water shortage. We need about four full days of consistent gentle rain (about 20 mm a day) to replenish dwindling river and groundwater levels and give relief to parched soils. Everyone in the Waimea and Motupiko areas – regardless of whether you get your water from the reticulated supply, a well or directly from a river – must urgently conserve water. Restrictions are in force for residents and businesses in Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Mapua, Ruby Bay, Wakefield and their rural extensions. The restrictions also apply to the rural schemes including Eighty-Eight Valley, Redwood Valley, and Dovedale.

Plan aims to reduce crashes on SH6 Waimea drivers who use the road between Nelson and Blenheim should be aware that the New Zealand Transport Agency has released a proposed plan designed to reduce crashes on the road. It includes Flexible barriers down the middle of the road in some areas to stop head-on crashes and rumble strips to give drivers a
wakeup call. Transport Agency System Manager Pete Connors says NZTA has been investigating ways to make the road safer as too many people are being killed or seriously injured in crashes. “To make sure we get things right we asked people who use the road what makes this road feel unsafe and what worries them the most.
We used this feedback, alongside our research, to shape this plan. Road users and the community now have an opportunity to comment on what we’ve come up with.” Between 2008 and 2017, 19 people died and 90 were seriously injured in crashes on SH6 between Blenheim and Nelson. Pete says many of these crashes
involved loss of control, with drivers running off the road and hitting roadside objects such as trees and power poles. There have also been head-on crashes on the highway, and at intersections. “The improvements we are looking to make will help prevent these types of crashes from occurring in the future. They will
make the road much safer for everyone who uses it,” he says. The proposed plan is not final, and Pete says the Transport Agency is seeking input from the public before the project team finalises the design, completes the business case and applies for construction funding. Just a thought... Jono Martin Pastor Richmond New Life This is certainly a time of crisis and uncertainty for our community and our region. At the time of writing this we have a fire in our region that covers over 2300h hectares. Hundreds of homes have been evacuated. Huge areas of farmland have been damaged. There are thousands of animals affected and there is a total fire and machinery ban in place. This is a unique challenge that has not been seen before in our region. Times of loss like this are horrible and yet there is fruit that comes as a community rallies together. It has been amazing to see the offers of support

and help across social media, and to hear of the stack loads of food and supplies that have been given to individuals and families across our region. So many have offered their homes, and their time and resources to help others. At a time like this, people forget their differences and the focus comes off the busyness and pressure of our own lives to ask how we can help and support one another. What a beautiful attribute to see across our community. In 2012, while doing missions work in Zimbabwe, we lost our Richmond home, sheds and possessions to fire in an arson attack. Probably the greatest effect on our children was the loss of dearly loved, handraised dogs and birds.
It was a really tough time for our family but, in the end, with the exception of the animals, it was only stuff that was gone. That stuff could be replaced. What was to be celebrated was the fact that we still had each other. At a time of loss like this, as we evaluated it all, all that really mattered was our relationships as a family, our relationships with other people around us and our relationship with Jesus Christ. Stuff can come and go but these relationships have the potential to impact us forever. In seasons of loss and crisis like this, it’s great to ask ourselves: What will your response be? What really matters in this life? Give your life to those things….
As so many of you know so personally, life is a gift. It can be here today and gone tomorrow. We don’t always have tomorrow to do what should be done today. Tell your spouse you love them. Sow loving into your children, don’t let bitterness and unforgiveness rob you of the joy of today. Give your time and your focus to making a difference in the lives of others and ask God to show Himself to you so you can discover the relationship, freedom and hope that he offers you through his son, Jesus Christ. Stay safe this week and may each of your find hope, encouragement and support in the midst of the challenges that come our way.

Rugby school targets youth Waimea Old Boys RFC is excited to be launching the Waimea Rugby School. The club’s director of rugby, Daniel Hobbs, says the purpose of the after-school programme is to boost the rugby skills of young sports men and women in the region. It will be designed to boost the rugby skills of 13 to 15-year-old rugby players, boys and girls, who want to improve their catch/run/pass, tackle, ruck, set piece and mental skills in a fun environment. Daniel states that players do not have to be a member of Waimea Old Boys RFC to take part, it is available to all 13 to 15 year olds in the region, no matter what their club or school affiliation is. There are still some places available, with about 14 of the targeted 20 places filled, although consideration will be given if interest is higher. Daniel says an excellent group of resource coaches will be involved, bringing many seasons of ITM Cup, Farah Palmer Cup, Super Rugby and international rugby experience between them. The programme will run for 20 weeks, not including school holidays, on Mondays from 4.30-5.30pm, starting March 11 and finishing August 19. It
will be held at Jubilee Park in Richmond and will cost $100 for the 20 weeks. Subsidised and supported by WOB as part of its contribution to the community, Daniel
Daniel Hobbs says the school aims to improve the quality and culture of age group rugby in support of the objectives of the Tasman Rugby Union. Daniel is in his first season in his new role, having started in November. His focus is on the JAB section of the club, from under 6 to under 18. He’s there to support junior rugby, including teams, coach-

Huge crowds enjoy national regatta After months of hard work and planning the weather gods smiled on The Rotoiti Power boat club as the New Zealand Power Boat Association national regatta began in idyllic conditions at Lake Rotoiti on Saturday. The huge crowds that turned up were treated to exciting racing in all classes in a largely incidentfree race meeting. Local competitor Philip Stilwell driving TOTAL was the popular winner of the NZ Formula 1 title after 10 years of trying. It was a closely contested race, with Philip coming home ahead of the well-performed Mega Express raced by North Islander Sam Hughes. Another popular NZ title winner was local driver Steve Burns in BURNOUT in the Modified VP class, putting in two dominant performances over the two-race title. Most of the crowd came to see

boat LUCAS OILS, who took victory in both races from his father Warwick Lupton. LUCAS OILS also won the King of the Nationals title. The district welcomed overnight rain which saw racing abandoned on Sunday. Club spokesman Joe Blakiston gave a huge vote of thanks to the
volunteers who contributed to the event including DOC staff and Rotoiti Fire Brigade staff who were on duty all weekend given the dry conditions. Joe says it was an event that set a new benchmark for the power boating fraternity, as they look to grow the sport to the next level and have fun while doing it.
A field of 70 runners and walkers enjoyed a warm sunny evening as they raced over the Eddyline 5km Estuary Course last week. Chris Sharland and Rick Muir had another tight finish with just five seconds between them, Chris crossing the line in 19 minutes 19 seconds. Similarly, Ian Courtenay and Pater Hague had a good battle throughout the race, with Ian finishing 15 seconds ahead. Saturday was the 4th annual staging of the Old Ghost Ultra, an 85km ultramarathon over the longforgotten gold miners road from the Seddonville end of the track to Lyell.
Nelson runner Klaartje van Schie was the second woman across the line, finishing in 8 hours, 50 minutes. Other club runners to be commended on their completion of this demanding event were Stu Cottam and Tania Gardner. A field of almost 60 runners and walkers enjoyed the local race on Saturday, which, while it had to be altered because of track closures, still provided athletes with Day’s Track steps, stunning views from Princes Drive, The Cliffs and a fast, flat section along Haven Road. Chris Sharland was the clear winner, taking the lead from the start of the race.

Close finish in shooting competition It was a case of close but not close enough for Chris Scully at the recent New Zealand Clay Target Association’s 2019 sporting championship. Chris, former owner of the Hunting & Fishing shops in Richmond and Nelson, finished third-equal in the event. He came away from the competition, held just out of Hamilton on February 16 and 17, with mixed feelings, after claiming 181 points out of a possible 200. However, the winner only shot 185. “I’m happy to get third but I’m annoyed I didn’t get another four or five points.” Unlike other clay target categories, such as trap and skeet, sporting competitions aim to replicate field shooting, such as rabbits running along the ground. There were about 140 competitors at the Hamilton event, he says, with between 30 or 40 from Australia. “All the top Aussies were there,” he says, “and normally we get pantsed.” This time, however, New Zealand shooters finished first, second and thirdequal. Chris Scully finished third-equal at the recent New Zealand Sporting National Championships near Hamilton. Conditions were not easy Photo: Supplied. due to the high tempera-
tures, he says. “It was bloody hot. The Thursday before the competition started it was 34 degrees and then on the first day it was 33. It melted a lot of people.” A former New Zealand representative, Chris has been named as first reserve for the New Zealand team to compete at the Oceania championships in Brisbane in April. His wife Karen, who finished fourth in the ladies competition in Hamilton, has also qualified for the New Zealand team. Members of the Nelson/ Waimea Gun Club, Chris and Karen, were joined at the national competition by fellow local shooters Paul and Wendy Hedwig, and Kim Rowe. Chris, who practices at the club about once a month, says it is the camaraderie among sporting category competitors that attracts him to the discipline. “It’s the people that we do it with that make it. There’s a light-hearted atmosphere.” They all stay in campervans at the venue, he says, and enjoy a “bit of banter”. “It’s really enjoyable and relaxing. Some disciplines are way too serious - but we enjoy a good laugh.”

Surface water Please be aware that all surface water around the region should always be treated as non-potable (not for drinking). This includes drains, creeks, streams, rivers, ponds and dams. Surface water takes shouldn’t be used for human consumption unless you have an effective treatment system in use. This is a precaution but given the potential for diseasecausing bacteria such as campylobacter or E.coli being present from animals and people, it is not safe to drink from any waterway in our urban or rural environment. Additionally, in some water ways the risk of toxins from algae is present, which could present a health issue for stock, dogs and people. Landowners should discuss with their local MPI representative if they’re concerned about stock water quality. Find more information about household water supplies on health.govt.nz.

Bendi Kepess took another narrow victory over Luke Kelly in race 14 of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series last Thursday. The international yachting regatta at the Nelson Yacht Club caused a change of venue for the swim to the Marine Rescue Centre. The extreme low tide right on start time made it difficult to enter and leave the water, but competition was even tighter than usual. On the first leg of the 1500m course, a large bunch formed at the head of the field, with veteran swimmers like Ben Van Dyke, 68, and Chris Vincent, 54, going head-to-head and at times, leading the younger stars of this year’s competition. At the first turn after 700m, conditions became increasingly choppy and the field started to spread on the 150m leg to the dolphin navigation marker. With the low tide, the dolphin was displaying some nasty sharp growths and barnacles, so a bit of caution was needed and that was the chance for Bendi and Luke to start open up a gap.
Rounding the final offshore marker, Bendi had the edge and with two sprinters of equal ability giving it all they had,
Ben Marshall is on top of the points table of M30-39 in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. Photo: Sandra McGregor. there was no prospect of Luke bridging the gap. Bendi stopped the clock at 18 minutes flat, with Luke (18.02) right on his heels. The normal teen bloc came in next, with Fergus Drummond (18.08), Alec Swan (18.10) and
Oxford Bayley (18.13) touching down ahead of the first woman, Abbey Smale (18.17). Josh Sheridan (18.21) lead M30-39 swimmer Ben Marshall (18.38) ahead of second woman Sierra Thomas (19.17), M50-59 leader Hamish Neill (19.36) and third woman Sophie Alexander (19.42). With series results taken on the best 12 of each competitor’s results, many are looking unbeatable, including Marshall and Neill, who have M30-39 and M50-59 wrapped up, as does Stuart Hebberd, who had to beat off a determined challenge from Francis Clark in the M70-79 division last week. Christina Harris (F50-59) also has a flawless record with 14 age division wins from 14 starts, coming in 24th overall. In last week’s short swim over 500m, Tom Perkins (8.26) coasted home ahead of Mia Langley (8.54), as many swimmers missed the final mark and had to perform a frantic dogleg to avoid disqualification. Jessica Gallagher (9.00) took third, ahead of Sophia Molnar (9.02) and Corey Tremblay (9.03).
Darts tourney a first for Richmond About 240 darts players are in Richmond this week for the Clubs New Zealand Darts Association 51st annual South Island tournament. Organisers say 23 different clubs are represented at the Waimea Club-hosted event, with players coming from all around the South Island. There are 47 players from four clubs in the Tasman/Nelson area taking part, including three juniors. It is the first time the event has been held in Richmond, and
Club Waimea is excited to be given the opportunity. Local player Tara Mears is one of those competing. Tara is one of the top woman players in the country, having won the South Island ladies singles titles back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. The event began on Tuesday night with ladies and men’s singles and pairs American barrel draw competitions. The tournament officially opens at 10.45am on Wednesday, before the mixed pairs cat-
egory gets under way at 11am. On Thursday the ladies pairs begins at 10am, with the men’s pairs starting an hour later. The ladies singles begins at 10.30am on Friday, with the start time for the youth and junior competitions to be confirmed. The men’s singles starts at 10am on Saturday. Everyone is welcome at Club Waimea during the tournament to watch and meet the players. The restaurant will be openly nightly during the event.
