A&P Show, 125 years young Susan Johnson It was a big year for the A&P Show. Celebrating its 125th birthday, the show went all out this year, and the crowds turned up for it, approximately 10,000 over the weekend. The showgrounds have an interesting history, the original stands which were three tiered and had no roof, burnt down in the 18th century and during the Spanish flu epidemic it was a temporary recovery centre. The weather was hot and dry, and demand was so high for ice creams one of the stalls had sold out by 3pm on Saturday. There were the usual fairground rides to amuse the kids, and plenty of food stalls to keep them going. Demonstrations and competitions in wood chopping and sheep shearing provided lots of excitement,

I remember going with short hair one year. My sister cut it with the pinking shears when Mum was on the phone.

I grew up on a farm and remember having to dress nicely for the show, it was something to look forward to, a special occasion.

In 1957 I won first prize for my marrow which was grown in our new house in clay with hardly any care.

I loved the show for the rides and the animals.

Community Dam moves forward Matt McCrorie The Waimea Community Dam is forging ahead. The controversial project, which received the green light from the council last November, is making progress, hitting a big milestone this week. Waimea Water Ltd, which is a joint venture between Waimea Irrigators Ltd and the Tasman District Council, oversees the construction of the Dam, and CEO Mike Scott says that while there are risks on the horizon, everything is on track at the moment. While the $104.4 million project is currently two months behind schedule due to fire risk earlier this year, Mike says that nothing has taken them above budget yet. “We are looking at everything we can to catch those two moths up.” The risk for going above budget is certainly there though. “It is very early days, and we need a lot to go our way to be on budget. There are some big risks on the horizon that need to be managed carefully, mainly around the geology and topography.” Mike says that they’ll have a much better idea of costs towards the middle of next year. A big milestone was reached this week, when concrete pouring began on the culvert for the dam.

Photo: Matt McCrorie. The culvert, a large 8 by 6 metre pipe, which will be 165 metres in length, will be used to divert the Lee Valley river while the dam is built above it. “It’s a key part of the dam,” Mike says. One particular risk that members of the community have been concerned about recently is the geology of the site, with questions asked about a lack of quality rock to build the Dam on. However Mike says that those concerns are unwarranted for the moment. “The rock is better in places than expected. It’s early days, but we are building on good quality rock.” Mike says there is no indication that the Dam will have to be

moved upriver if the rock isn’t right. “This is exactly where the Dam should be. Everything we’ve found is as expected. The health warning is that when we did exploratory work, everything we looked at was steep forest. As with any project, there is a great element of uncertainty around the exploration work.” But Mike says there is no more uncertainty now than there was when they began the work, but that they will be in a better position to understand risks and costs mid-way through 2020. “The reality with construction projects is that you often don’t know the final costs until near or even after completion.”

New electorate boundaries mean shift for Brightwater A proposed electorate boundary change means that Brightwater may end up voting as part of the West-Coast Tasman electorate rather than the Nelson electorate in future elections.

Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Residents of Brightwater will have a new choice to make in future general elections. The town, which has always been part of the Nelson electorate boundary and currently has Nick Smith as its MP, will be moving to the Tasman/West coast electorate for the 2020 general election. The Representation Commission, the independent body that reviews the boundaries and names of electorates, has transferred Brightwater to the West Coast – Tasman electorate as a proposed boundary change. The commission says that the the population for the West Coast-Tasman electorate has dropped too low, and needs a larger population to remain an electorate. “Brightwater, with a population of 2100, is added from neighbouring Nelson,” the report says. “Brightwater is the only neighbouring area where enough population can be added to West Coast-Tasman

Photo: Susan Johnson. without crossing the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana.” Nelson MP Nick Smith isn’t pleased with the proposed changes. “I am disappointed for Brightwater as it has more in common with Richmond and Nelson than Motueka and the West Coast.” Nick also acknowledges that population is a factor. “This change for Brightwater is a product of population numbers. Nelson’s population

has been growing significantly faster than the West Coast/ Tasman area. It is going to be very hard to reverse this proposal with the law requiring only a 5% variation in population between electorates.” Having been the MP for the area for a long time, Nick has been involved with Brightwater frequently, most recently forming a trust to secure land at Snowden’s Bush in Brightwater for public use. “I’m personally disappointed

to be losing Brightwater because it was my home for many years and I love the community. I take my constituency responsibilities very seriously and will be continuing to work for the Brightwater community right up to the election next year.” Residents can object to the changes until December 20. The final electorate boundaries and names will be formally published in April next year.

Candidates confirmed for Nelson Labour candidate Rachel Boyak will again challenge Nick Smith for the Nelson seat in next year’s general election. Rachel confirmed last week that she had been nominated as the Labour Party candidate in Nelson. Rachel was the Labour candidate in 2017 for the Nelson electorate, but she missed out on the seat, with incumbent National MP Nick Smith securing a victory in a closely watched race. This week, Nick MP Nick Smith has again been confirmed as National’s pick for the Nelson seat. Nick retained his seat in 2017, beating Rachel as well as incumbent Nelson City councillor Matt Lawry, who ran for the Green Party. Nick was first elected in Rachel Boyak 1996 to represent Nelson and has held on to the seat since then. However, the 2017 election saw a drop in Nick’s support – while he still won the seat, his vote total dropped to the lowest it’s been since 2002.

The weather was perfect, the crowd enthusiastic and the performers, young and old, all determined to put on a good parade. And that they did. Charlotte Bidlake from Richmond Unlimited who organised the event certainly thought so. “We’re really pleased, it was a great turnout. The floats were a visual treat for the kids, with great attention to detail,” she says. Queen Street was packed on Sunday, with people beginning to arrive early in the morning to make sure they could get a good view. Rotary club members were on hand to help with information, directions and when the time came, to close the roads. Rob Bloor and his team of entertainers from the Inspired Productions Trust helped kept the kids happy until the main event, blowing giant bubbles, clowning around and performing on stilits. Then that unmistakable sound of the bagpipes came from the top of

Queen Street, heralding the start of the parade, the news passing down the street as parents told their kids to settle down. With the Highland band leading the way locals were treated to visual delights such as a pint-sized Elvis, Darth Vader and of course – Santa himself bringing up the rear. Nick Smith and Tasman District Councillor Kit Mailing made an appearance on a group push bike, along with Disney characters, stormtroopers, and Santa’s little helpers. Nelson Catchball won the muchcoveted prize for best float. As last year’s winners in the people’s choice category, this year they went with a woodland scene. Kids dressed as fairies and elves, decorated with vines and wood. The effort put in by the team was clear to see. Second place went to Grace Church for a Bethlehem scene, complete with an almost life-size camel and singers dressed as angels accompanied by children on guitars. The Dress-Up Box took out third place this year.

Vandals wreak havoc on baseball club Jonty Dine A local changing shed has become the target of recidivist vandalism. The Nelson Heat baseball club has had the windows and toilets in its changing sheds smashed on several occasions. The shed, opposite Garin College, is a council-owned building, sitting next to Avery Field. Nelson Heat President Tom

Kroos says the continued damage has been frustrating for both the council and the club. “It’s been difficult. The first instance was right before an invitational meet, with teams from out of town. It was not a great look for Nelson and devastating for us to arrive and have that destruction.” After repairing the windows four times, the vandals keep returning to inflict further dam-

age. Their latest rampage saw them smash their way in where they took to the toilets with baseball bats. While no motive is yet clear, the club worries the attacks aren’t random and that they are the target. “I don’t know if that’s the case here, but there has been a frequency of this senseless destruction.”

Police have yet to determine if it’s one person or a group of individuals committing these crimes. Tom says to have these senseless acts is most unfortunate as it is ultimately the children that suffer. “What is difficult, is there’s a lot of people here, committee members, parents, coaches that sacrifice time to give kids sport and I think that’s one of the hardest parts.”

Nelson Matters

I had a busy weekend with the 125th Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Show. I have had a stand at the show for 30 years and it is a great opportunity to catch up with the diverse range of farmers and growers from all corners of the region. I have never experienced Nelson’s rural community feeling so disheartened. They feel under attack on every front. The concerns were similar to those at the huge protest on the West Coast that I attended the previous weekend and the recent farming protest on Parliament’s steps. It has not helped that Government Minister Shane Jones dismissed farmers as “rednecks”

and “whingers”. Nor was it a good look that Agriculture Minister and West Coast MP Damien O’Connor refused to even attend the Greymouth rally attended by over 4000. It was by listening to individual farmers at the Nelson A&P show that I can see why they have become so angry. One farmer was almost in tears over all his stock being culled over Mycoplasma Bovis. He had faced months of bureaucratic delays in trying to get compensation to survive. I also heard frustration over new honey and whitebait regulations. Water was a hot topic. One couple, who are exemplary farmers, were cross over having to spend

$1000’s renewing simple domestic water consents. Others were frustrated that after recently spending $10,000’s on fencing waterways are now being told they had to be redone because a wider riparian margin was required. Another common concern was nitrogen limits that could not be practicably met. The other major concerns of farmers is over climate change. New Zealand has less than 1% of the world’s stock and it is not fair that they are the only farmers in the world facing a new climate change tax. Farmers were also critical that the Government is blocking access to some of the new biotechnology

Warning after Legionnaire’s outbreak Staff Reporter Gardeners are being warned to protect themselves against Legionnaire’s disease after three cases in just eight days were confirmed in the region, and after an associated death in Dunedin last month. Four cases in total have been confirmed in 2019. There have been 53 cases in the region since 2010. Clinical Director of public health Stephen Bridgman says that Legionnaires’ disease is a serious illness that can cause pneumonia and, in some cases, death. Potting mix is the most common source of the Legionella bacteria and it’s also present in inadequately treated spa pools. People most at risk of becoming infected are usually over 50 years of age, smoke, or have chronic illnesses that suppress their immunity. “Legionnaires’ is not passed from person to person, but people can catch it by inhaling soil or compost dust or droplets of water in the air,” Stephen says. “Most cases in our region are connected to soil, compost or potting mix. At this time of year, when people are getting into their gardens more, we urge people to take care when handling these products.” Early symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure and are similar to the flu. He says anyone with these symptoms should see their doctor straight away and let them know you have been handling potting mix, soil or compost recently. Early treatment is effective. To avoid Legionnaires’ disease gardeners have been told to open potting mix bags carefully using scissors and to wear a face masks and gloves. Gardeners are advised to wash hands after handling potting mix, or gardening.

that could help them reduce emissions. A further concern of farmers is the proposed new $3000 + taxes on 4WD vehicles and utes. We need to recognise many people need these vehicles to do their jobs particularly in New Zealand’s tough terrain. I worry that the Government’s policies and rhetoric is making New Zealand more divided. Town needs country as much as country needs town. New Zealand earns 65% of our exports from our primary industries. We only get to pay for our smart phones, modern cars, lifesaving pharmaceuticals and overseas holidays through these export earnings.

We need to find a better way forward. New Zealand does need to tackle the difficult issues like improving our water quality and climate change but we will not get there by demonising farmers. We need to acknowledge our most polluted waterways are in urban areas. The biggest growth in our greenhouse gas emissions is in cities. We all need to do our fair share. The Government needs to change its approach. They need to start listening to farmers. Policies need to be practical. They could learn from our A&P Shows which are all about bringing urban and rural New Zealanders together. Advt.

The Tasman region may face the permanent chlorination of its water supply. Council Engineering services manager Richard Kirby told councillors that a report commissioned

NELSON & TASMAN

Keeping your electricity network safe and reliable We’re working on a significant project to replace some of the wires on our network.

In the 1950s and 1960s, a lot of development occurred to electrify the Tasman area. Power authorities of the time built about 1200km of new high voltage power lines to bring electricity to many people who had never had it before. Sixty or so years later, it’s time to replace some of these wires in order to keep our network safe. The ones we are replacing are made from light-gauge copper, which, like anything, can wear out over time – mostly through a process called annealing that can cause them to become brittle. Replacing wires is a difficult job that involves the use of heavy machinery and crews of line workers spread over multiple work sites. This makes it unsafe to do the work at night time. It also involves working on long spans of line, which means large numbers of people may be affected and more than one planned temporary power outage may be required to complete each job. Unfortunately some consumers will have their power interrupted more often than they are used to while we replace the wires. Sometimes we will be able to use one of our large generators to keep the power on but most of the time this won’t be possible because of the way the network is built.

SUNDAY 8 DECEMBER

Shutdown notices will be mailed to the electricity account owners of affected properties in the same way we do for all of our planned outages. The wire replacement work will be spread over the next ten years in pockets located throughout most of our network area and it will take place alongside our normal routine maintenance programme.

Here’s your opportunity to re-home household goods! On Second Hand Sunday, people can take away the stuff you don’t want for free!

While the work will cause some inconvenience, it will keep the network in good condition so that a safe and reliable electricity supply continues to be available for all consumers in the Network Tasman region.

In Wakefield, they are performing three, one-act plays. The first play is ‘Leonardo’s Last Supper,’ directed by Peter Barnes and coincides with this year being the 500th anniversary of da Vinci’s death. This is a black comedy

This is a powerful piece set in a homeless shelter and the three women who have found their way there. The third one-act play called ‘Tess and Flo’ is directed by Bruce Western who is also the playwright. The play was originally written by Marianne Gaston to be played by two men but Bruce collaborated with Marianne and rewrote the piece to be played by four women. The

Lucky winner for ebike Matt McCrorie Phil Smith couldn’t quite believe his luck. The Murchison local had been in Nelson for several days for work when his wife told him the good news. He was the winner of a brand new, one of a kind ebike. First reported in Waimea Weekly on November 6, Jack McCormick, a Waimea College student, was raffling off an ebike he had designed and built from scratch. Jack has always had a love for tinkering with things. His first project, when he started high school, was to use an old chainsaw to build an ebike. “I’ve always got a project.” Since then, he’s converted countless bikes into ebikes or motorised

bikes. There’s about five of them in his shed at the moment. This particular bike was a part of a business studies project, and determined to recoup the cost, Jack decided on a raffle. Phil Smith, who won the new bike, owns The Cow Shed Restaurant in Murchison and bought some raffle tickets when Jack spoke about his project at the local Lions meeting. “I spend the holidays out there with my grandparents, and I got the chance to talk about the project. I think I sold like 100 tickets straight away.” And Phil couldn’t be happier. “I’ll be able to keep up with my wife now. She’s got an ebike and I’m starting to get left behind on the push bike.”

WEDNESDAY 27 November 2019

Just a thought... Steve Rollo Pastor Richmond Church of Christ What do you think of Christmas? As the weather warms, students finish exams and it’s time to enjoy the local Christmas Parades. As children’s eyes look for Santa, others are thinking, do we need Christmas? For some, Christmas brings stress as extra financial pressures hit home, for some it’s the fear of loneliness or how well they cope without their loved one who won’t be there this year, for some it will be the extra pressure of having to work long hours as their employer asks for extra hours. Maybe there’s the parents who wonder who will mind the children as they juggle work and trying to get everything ready for the big day. Then there’s the one who is separated from family and maybe spending Christmas away from home. Even harder for someone who through illness may be finding it hard thinking about ‘what if I’m not here this Christmas’, or someone who has sad memories of a sad experience from a Christmas long ago. Sadly I’m sure for some, there is the thought, “Is Christmas really worth it?” Today we celebrate our Christmas,

in a very different time and culture to that original biblical story of a little baby Jesus being born in a manger. Reading the words of Isaiah in the Bible, a verse often quoted in Christmas cards and Christmas songs; “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called, Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 What if God’s plan was to bring light into a dark world, to give us hope for our future, peace in a time of unrest or confusion, to provide an everlasting love from a faultless loving Father who just wants to spend eternity with His Children. What if the celebration of Christmas was for all to enjoy and bring peace to our world? I love Christmas and know that God sent His Son into our world, born in a humble manger as the most amazing gift of love, not just to bring peace but to give us hope. This Christmas, visit your local Church and find out more about the gift of Christmas. Many of our local churches also have special Christmas services on Christmas Day as we believe the Christmas story is worth celebrating.

Hospice shop takes on waste Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Waste really bothers Anne Marie McGrath. The talented seamstress, with a career that has spanned over four decades, was working for a clothing company in Wellington when she began to get frustrated about the excessive amounts of clothing waste being produced. “I saw all this waste, and I got really passionate about wanting to do something with it.” Looking for a way to help, she got in touch with the Richmond Hospice Shop. “It was perfect timing, because we have all this waste and we’ve been trying to think of something we can do with it,” says Anete Smith, Manager of the Richmond Hospice Shop. She’s not exaggerating. The Richmond Hospice shop alone throws away an entire truck-

load of clothing waste each month, usually donated items that are dirty or damaged. Anete guesses that around 30 per cent of the clothing donations they receive end up in landfill. The fashion industry creates about ten per cent of the global CO2 emissions, which is more than aviation and shipping combined, according to a report commisioned by the United Nations. Anne Marie knew that she could do something about it. The result of the new collaboration between Anne Marie and the Hospice is the Phoenix clothing label, a range of carefully upcycled original pieces. The garments are created from pieces of donated clothing that would have otherwise ended up in landfill, but Anne Marie says that all they need is a little love. Whether they were torn, ripped or stained, they can be reworked into something new. Inspiration for the label came

from the idea of the Phoenix, something old being reborn from the ashes. “The idea just stuck with us.” “We live in a world of fast fashion today, and things aren’t really made to last. The thing about old fabrics is that they’re a much better quality. They can be reused again and again.” For several months now, Anne Marie has been using her skills to breathe new life into old tired garments, and Richmond Hospice Shop Manager Anete Smith says that the result is outstanding. “Anne Marie has taken a lot of garments that we wouldn’t have sold, some that are quite old fashioned, and she’s turned them into high fashion.” The new range, which will soon go on sale at Hospice shops across the region, will be raising money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice service. “We are extending the life of products that would have otherwise gone to waste”

Globally, men experience worse longer-term health than women. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and we can’t afford to stay silent. The Movember Foundation is the only charity which is

The ‘CLM Mo Bros’ have been on a mission this month, growing mo’s and raising funds and awareness about the serious health issues faced by men in our community. (L to R: Greenmeadows Community Centre Manager, Gareth Cashin, Manager of Riverside and Nayland Pools, Dave McKenzie, Manager of the Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park, Mark Mekalick and Facility Manager at Richmond Aquatic Centre, Vaughan Hope.) ticular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. In Nelson-Tasman, the month of Movember is an opportunity for men to grow a moustache to raise money for men’s health and over the years many local businesses and individuals have supported this worthy cause. All funds raised go towards programmes targeted at men’s key health issues, with many events held throughout the country to raise awareness. For 30 days, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas rally to support the cause, to get people talking and raise funds. This Movember, a valiant group of local men – the CLM Mo Bro’s, have been growing mo’s to raise funds and awareness for all the dads, brothers and mates in their lives. “It’s a great initiative,” says Gareth Cashin, Greenmeadows Community Centre Manager. “My Dad passed away from prostate cancer last year, so this is a great way we can support fundraising to reduce those deaths.” Vaughan Hope, Facility Manager at Richmond Aquatic Centre, says

he got involved for a number of reasons. “It’s great we have got an awesome group of Managers who want to get behind such a great cause and also raise dollars and awareness for all the boys and men out there that could do with that support.” Dave McKenzie, Manager of Riverside Pool and Nayland Pool, says he’s pleased to be doing his bit for the health and fitness industry. “It’s great to be supporting all that sort of stuff and getting awareness out there for men’s health.” Mark Mekalick, Manager of the Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park, is also taking part in CLM Mo Bro’s. “I grow a moustache every November, so my wife said, ‘why don’t you do something with it this year?’ I’m really keen to get behind it to raise some funds for a great charity this year.” To support the CLM Mo Bro’s fundraising efforts, you can make a donation via their app or Facebook page. We are still weather reliant – on finer days, start a little later in the morning once surfaces have dried off, and finish earlier in the afternoons to allow enough drying time before evening dampness falls. Why is my paint cracking/peeling? Usually because it hasn’t been prepped properly. Done correctly, prepping is sometimes almost 80% of the job and has

to be done right or it can be time- wasting. Or possibly, the wrong type of paint has been used. Can you paint over old paint with any type of paint? No. Firstly, establish what type of paint was used previously. If it’s acrylic, then use acrylic over the top. If it’s oil based, then use oil base over the top or firstly apply a coat of sealer that has etching & binding properties for acrylic paint. Almost everyone thinks they can paint but not everyone can achieve a satisfactory, professional result. Do it once - do it right!

Water Tank Cleaning Why choose Water Tank Cleaning? My name is John Ross, owner of Water Tank Cleaning. I have learnt a lot from my previous business of 16 years, which involved commercial cleaning, including cleaning factories to food grade standards, and I have good knowledge of Nelson, Tasman, and the West Coast from working across these areas for many years. We operate with a Ute and light truck which are both 4WD and fully equipped with suction and waterblasting gear to clean and sanitize old and new tanks. How often do I need my tank cleaned? The Health Department recommendation

Richmond Sewing is that water tanks are cleaned every two years. I’ve seen sludge at the bottom of water tanks half a metre deep and it’s not uncommon for us to remove dead birds, rodents, pollen and leaves from tanks. How far do you travel? I’m happy to travel to the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay and St Arnaud and will consider discounted rates for bulk bookings. What’s the best way to contact you? Phone John on 0212 450 550 or email wtc@xtra.co.nz

Contact John - 021 245 0550 Babyspace What advice do you have for parents looking for a centre? Quality early childhood education is closely linked to small group size, positive relationships between children and the adults in the centre, and a low turnover of staff. Parents who are looking for a small group environment with a high teacher/ child ratio and a very special atmosphere are welcome to visit Lynda and the team at BabySpace or see the website at www. babyspacenelson.co.nz. How do you recommend settling children into an ECE setting? Here at BabySpace we believe that the time spent in teachers, children and families “getting to know each other” during the

Two Hands Health settling in period is important for the child’s emotional safety and good relationships between families and teachers. Feeling safe is a prerequisite to learning and developing relationships. The process requires commitment from parents and teachers. We then have happy children and parents who trust the adults who are caring for their children. Short frequent visits are beneficial to start with, and the periods extending as the visits progress. When mutually agreed, the parents should leave for a short time. As the child becomes settled these visits will be longer with the parent able to leave for a longer time. There will be opportunities then for the regular caregiving practices such toileting, eating and sleeping to be established.

Facing the greens for 50 years Jonty Dine

Don Carter may well be the longest serving greenkeeper in the country. The Richmond resident has been preparing the greens at Stoke Bowling Club for more than half a century, longer than anyone he knows in his vast network of greenkeepers. “I don’t know of anyone who has done 50 years,” he says. Don was recently honoured at the Nelson Sports Awards with a Rata Foundation Life Service Award. The 82-year-old says it was a rare moment of adulation in an oftenthankless job. “You don’t get many bouquets.” A reluctant Don required some convincing to attend the awards.

“It was quite an honour, it’s not my cup of tea, that sort of thing,” he says. “I’d just be quite happy to do me work and leave it at that, but I got pressured into it and said yes in the end.” Don has been recognised in the past for his tireless dedication through the New Zealand Greenkeepers Association, but says this award ranks right up there. “It probably tops.” Don’s extensive career began back in the 1950s when he managed an orchard for a “bloke who was a bowler”. “We started going to the fruit grower’s tournament. I wasn’t a player at all, I had never had a bowl in my hand but that’s how I got into it and I rather enjoyed it.” Don’s boss gifted the then

24-year-old his first set of bowls and dragged him down to the club to join in 1960. “I’ve been here ever since.” While still managing the orchard, Don started assisting the club’s greenkeepers in his spare time. “We had a heap of soil in the shed and I went down and gave them a hand because they were older fellas’, so I went and helped spread the soil.” Don would go on to volunteer for seven more years until he was offered an employed position. One thing led to another, and Don was soon advising other greenkeepers and managing two greens in Nelson, two in Richmond and two in Stoke. “It was a big job from daylight till dark, seven days a week.”

While he has cut back on the hours, Don is still working seven days a week maintaining the two greens at Stoke. “I like to start early and get my work done,” he says. “I get down here at about 6.30am to have the greens ready for the first games at 9am.” He says working with plants, fertilizer and spray was ingrained in him at an early age. “I had a slight advantage because I’ve always worked on the land; my father was an orchardist.” He has not only spent decades as a player, Don has also been a coach, selector, life member, president and patron. Don has won 16 centre titles and more than 30 club titles, both records which still stand today. He

has also represented Nelson for 18 consecutive seasons and once finished a national tournament as the fourth best player in the country. However, his true talents and passion lay on the surface and he retired as a player 12 years ago so he could dedicate himself to bowling greens. After 52 years at the helm, Don admits his time as one of the country’s longest serving greenkeepers may be nearing an end. “I am probably at the stage now where maybe 12 more months and I’ll possibly retire from greenkeeping, but I have really enjoyed it. I don’t think one day I’ve never woken up and thought ‘oh I have to go and face those greens’.”

bunch wider out as they churned down the harbour followed by a large contingent of spectators on shore. Swimmers converged at an offshore mark just off the yacht club ramp, with Alec having an advantage over the large chasing group as they turned for shore and going on to crack the nine-year-old record, recording 21 minutes and 26 seconds. The next five swimmers also broke the old record in a close finish be-

tween Luke Kelly (21.53), Fergus Drummond (21.54), Oxford Bayley (21.56), Abbey Smale (21.57) and Sierra Thomas (22.29). The women’s record, set by Sierra last year, was shattered by nearly three minutes by Abbey, with Sierra also going well below her old mark. Hayden Squance (22.42) finished in seventh place, missing the old overall record by two seconds, while the top ten was filled out by Nic Hall (22.53), Hamish Neill

(25.26) and Isabella Thurlow (25.32). It was a good hit out for five teenagers who have been selected to represent New Zealand at the NSW Open Water Championships in December. The group, 16-year-olds Alec Swan, Fergus Drummond, Abbey Smale and Sierra Thomas and 15-year-old Isabella Thurlow, train together at the Richmond Aquatic Centre, honing their skills in the weekly Port Nelson

swim series and the four-race Clements Endurance Series. Sunday’s race was held in perfect conditions just before high tide, with calm seas and no current. A field of 82 took part in the 2km race, while seven competed over a shorter course of 600m from the Richardson St Steps. Ages of the competitors ranged from 15, with 78-year-old Derek Eaton showing he still has the fire in his belly, finishing 30th in 31min 29sec.

Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir congratulated the 83 nominees who have “tested themselves in the cauldron of competition”. “This evening reminds us of the simple truth that it’s not about the awards we win but a deeper self-reflection and measure of what we have put in.” Nelson rower Zoe McBride took out Sportswoman of the Year on the back of winning two World Cup gold medals and gold in the World Rowing champs in Austria earlier this year. Zoe claimed gold in the lightweight women’s sculls with teammate Jackie Kiddle which saw them both nominated for the World Crew of the Year. The Tasman Mako’s historic

season keeps getting better as the side was named Sports Team of the Year. A maiden Mitre 10 Cup premiership also earned the Mako Head Coach Andrew Goodman the title of Best in the Region. Nelson cricket veteran Mason Robinson was named the Best Masters Sportsperson in the region, currently the second ranked over 50 player in the world. A trio of long-time servants to sport were also honoured with the Rata Foundation Lifetime Contribution to Sport awards. These went to Don Carter for lawn bowls, Maree Smith for netball and Shane Drummond for rugby. The region’s top young sports stars were also recognised with all three catego-

ries showcasing the incredible depth of young talent in Nelson. In a highly competitive category, New Zealand football star Amelia Abbott was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year. The U20 footballer was an integral member of the New Zealand side which finished third at the FIFA U17 World Cup. Nayland College’s beach volleyball team won the Junior Sports Team of the Year after their historic success in 2019. The national champions Sophie Young and Greta Stjade took out the coveted award thanks to their unprecedented run in Mt Manganui where the pair went unbeaten.

Wanderers-Motueka secure first win back in premier cricket Staff Reporter

Wanderers 2nd Grade Captain John Glazier with the Kirkpatrick Cup following a successful defence against Nelson College at the Brightwater on Saturday. Photo: Marty Davis.

LAS VEGAS & CARIBBEAN

The Wanderers-Motueka cricket team recorded their first victory since returning to premier cricket in the Nelson Cricket Association competition, defeating Waimea Toi ToiUnited on Saturday. Taylors Wanderers-Motueka lost the toss and were put in the field at Jubilee Park on Saturday against the strong WTTU team. Wanderers-Motueka got off to a fairly slow start after the first over went for 16 and the second for eight, however once the opening bowling duo of Zabe Mohammed and Andrew Beatson found their lines, they both bowled tight spells, Mohammed picked up an early wicket before a frustrating period of play then ensued as the WTTU second wicket put on a valuable 40 run partnership. This was eventually brought to a close with the introduction of James Ranson and Logan Ogilvie, the former picking up the key breakthrough and providing great control as Ogilvie tore through the WTTU line up from the other end. Ogilvie’s spell of four for 21 in a long 10 over spell changed the game as WTTU stumbled from 78-2 to 105-6 and was undoubtedly deserving of the MVP accolade. Again, a period of frustration ensued for Wanderers-Mot as WTTU attempted to wear the bowlers down. However, they stuck to their task admirably as spin came

into the attack. Their 15-year-old spinner Mitch Grant took two for 10 off his four overs and Mannering taking two for 18 off his 12 overs, going at economies of 2.5 and 1.5 respectively which helped bring the WTTU innings to a conclusion at 129 all out. The Wanderers-Mot chase started well with Mohammed and Alex Brogan putting on 48. Wanderers-Mot inevitably stumbled in pursuit of their small target as they slumped from 82-2 to 96-5 with Brogan, Bamford and Mannering all being dismissed cheaply. It was left to experienced heads Andrew Beatson and John Ogilvie to lead Wanderers-Mot home, eventually reaching their target with four wickets remaining. A first win for this young side which contains five players under 19, back in the top flight will no doubt delight both players and locals alike as both clubs continue to bounce back from last year’s exit from premier status. Meanwhile out at Centennial Park the Wanderers 2nd Grade team was defending the Kirkpatrick Cup at home against Nelson College in simply perfect cricketing conditions. Nelson finally settled for score of 205, leaving Wanderers the target of 206 to retain the ‘K’ Cup. Wanderers started with an amazing opening stand between Geddes and Campion of

96. Campion eventually out on 50. Geddes went on to score 101 not out. Wanderers finally reached 206 with 12 overs to spare and John Glazier was very relieved to lift the ‘K’ Cup aloft once more and his comments after the award reflect very well on the group; “The team has an excellent positive attitude this year, working together and I couldn’t be prouder of the boys. Both teams showed composure and entertained their supporters, but Geddes’ excellent knock simply took the game away from Nelson College. This year Taylors Wanderers also field a team in 3rd/College grade with a group of boys primarily from Waimea College under the leadership of Matt Anderson. This team played against Nayland College in T25 format and batting first put on an extremely formidable 303 with Ryan Mairs contributing almost 50% of the total with an unbeaten 150. Mitchell Grant started in this team at the start of the season, and his success for the Premiers on Saturday proves the “pathway” exists for all players at Wanderers and Motueka this season and for the future. As an added bonus, Taylors Wanderers also field two teams in the Friday night Presidents ‘Oldies’ limited over competition where the Wanderers Wizards are enjoying some success, being two from two so far.

Still marching five generations later Susan Johnson A friend introduced Margaret Goodman to marching when she was 11 years old and she’s just retired from coaching 68 years later. Her dad and her boyfriend, now husband, became marshals and her mum helped with fundraising. Her youngest sister at aged 2 became the team mascot. Two sisters also started marching. “I didn’t know what marching was until I went to the first practise and then I was hooked”, says Margaret. “We lived in the Wood then and I would get up at 5:30 in the morning and bike to Tahuna where we practised, sometimes twice a week, that’s how keen I was.” The marching club, then known as the Waimea Association, would fundraise by collecting glass containers and holding dances. “One we held in the Stoke Hall must have been in winter as I remember my dad was on the door and he nearly froze to death,” says Margaret. When Margaret married and started a family, she moved into coaching and administration, Secretary for Nelson Association twice, helping vari-

Summer pub runs 40th anniversary celebration Athletics Nelson Chairperson and Race Director, Stu Hague welcomed 83 runners, walkers and many past members and supporters to the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Summer Pub runs in Nelson, at the Prince Albert Hotel on Saturday. There were two runners, Janet Saunders and Mike Ward from the inaugural event, who shared the honours of cutting the celebration cake. They gave a brief account of

how the runs were established to keep up distance running over the summer in addition to the traditional track and field athletics. Results from the 30th Anniversary Race held over the same course, from the Prince Albert, up the Maitai Valley to Sharlands Bridge and return, were available for reminiscing. The winner of Saturday’s 7km race, Cliff Bowman, 24.59mins, was also the winner 10 years ago

and had only slowed by one minute over that time. What a fantastic effort! Other runners to have maintained excellent running times from the race 10 years ago were: Tim Cross, Colette Read, Derek Shaw, Stu Hague and Fran Kerse. With such large turnouts at local events, the future of running and walking in Nelson looks very promising for the next 10 years leading up to the 50th Anniversary.

Course. Head Golf Coach Tony Naylor, along with parents and Greenacres members put on a great show that was thoroughly enjoyed by the athletes with intellectual disabilities and all the players / members who supported this unique event. This event was an opportunity for golfers and non-golfers alike to share the fairways, playing alternate shots, during this most worthwhile fund-raising event. Everyone agreed that although the scoring was not the most important aspect of the day, the

high standard of golf delivered a thrilling finish with the winner and 1st place going to Fred Grindlay and Karlin Spiers*. 2nd place being awarded to Edward Kelling and Finbar Ruebsam* and 3rd place Diane Gardiner and Gabby Green* (*indicates a Special Olympics Athlete). Nearest the pin, on the par 3, third hole, was an exciting affair with three golfers landing within 5m of the pin. The winner was Diane Gardiner, who almost achieved a hole in one, only to hit the pin and bounce away.

The presentation was completed by John Towns (Patron and a founder member of Special Olympics Nelson), who summarised the day, by emphasising that seeing so many people of various abilities just having fun and playing golf together, was the most satisfying part of the day. All concerned would like to thank the generosity of the sponsors, who contributed. Sponsors were so many but included Pomeroys, WOW Carpet Cleaning, Deville Café, and the Greenacres Golf Club and their team.
