Harvest Gala set to impress Amy Russ Reporter

Saturday, April 7, is set to see St Pauls school grounds transformed into a Harvest gala extravaganza. The biennial fund-raising event is being held this year, with funds raised helping to support the completion of a multifunctional space for the students. Since the school opened in 1999 with 47 students the number of pupils has more than quadrupled, and with a roll of 320 pupils and the growth rate in the last 2 years increasing significantly, a new space is needed which will cater for learning, school assemblies, community meetings and much more. The Catholic Diocese have agreed to help fund the building of the space, but extra money still need to be raised to support the completion and final fit-out of the building. The building is still in the planning stages at the moment, but the school hopes to start building by the end of this year.

With the last gala raising $20,000, Sarah Churchman, President of the Friends of St Pauls, says the school is hoping to do the same or more. The theme this year is Harvest, and there will be prizes for the best dressed adult and best dressed child. The silent auction has some amazing items available including a limited edition Weta Workshop Hobbit sculpture, A $700 blue tooth speaker dock, signed T-shirts by one time St Paul students The Broods, boutique fashion items and a full term of swimming lessons at the Aquatic Centre, to name a few. Along with craft and food stalls from the school and local businesses, there will be a bouncy castle, pony rides, jeeps, Flossie the Balloon Lady, a haunted classroom, and a white elephant stall. “One of the things the kids are looking forward to are pony rides,” says Sarah, “everyone loves pony rides!” Festivities go from 11am until 2pm on Saturday, April 7, with gold coin entry or koha.

Electric vehicles the torqueing point in Richmond Amy Russ

Margaret Baker takes locals for a spin in a Tesla model X during the Richmond leg of their road trip journey. Photo: Amy Russ. The 7-car convoy consisted of 4 Teslas, a Hyundai Ioniq, a Mitsubishi Outlander and a Renault Zoe. They left Invercargill last Wednesday with a team of 10 people, and will arrive in Cape

Reinga April 5, stopping in Auckland for Easter. There are over 7000 electric vehicles in New Zealand, a number which is growing rapidly each year. The Energy Efficiency Con-

servation Authority aim to have over 64,000 EV’s in the country by the end of 2021. Tesla driver Shawn Moodie says his favourite moment of the journey so far has been visiting the schools. “It has been an absolute joy to see the rural schools, and the kids reactions. They know so much about the cars it’s amazing! They seem to know exactly which ones they want to own when they grow up.” He also says there’s one huge bonus with people who run an E-car, they spend money wherever they stop to recharge. “We are great for the local economy because we stop for a coffee and a bit of a shop while the car charges!” The Teslas can drive up to 500km on a full charge and, depending on the model, can reach 100km in less than 3 secs. “Because there is no engine, it has 100 percent torque,” says Shawn, “also because

ginning

the cars are brand-new. The Tesla is the only car that has 5 stars in every safety category rating.” Most EV’s can be charged on a normal plug in your garage overnight, and fastcharged within half an hour at a public fastcharge station. Shawn says, “fastcharges are there to help you make journeys, home chargers help you get around day to day.” The plan is to have 80km spaces between charge stations nationwide. With 63 stations around the country at the moment, and 32 more currently in construction, Charge Net is well on their way to achieving that goal. This year’s turnout in Richmond was one of the best so far in the trip. Kathryn says the New Zealand Transport Authority statistics show the Nelson Tasman region hits above its weight when it comes to EV adoption. Further information at www.betternz.org

Amy Russ It’s that time again, when teams from local businesses and schools plant their best foot firmly in the ground to compete in the annual Nelson Tasman Hospice Tug of Peace fund-raiser, held at the top of Trafalgar Street. The event on April 5 brings out a long-standing rivalry for local company Downer, and overall winners for the last two years, when they go up against their old rivals and previous title holders, Nelmac.

“It’s going to be a tough competition this year,” says Hospice spokeswoman Joanna Davis, “it’s a great event and a positive thing to keep us in the public eye.” Funds raised from the event are allocated towards the new Hospice being built on Suffolk Road. So far, the foundations for the building are already down and the Hospice are aiming for the brand-new facility to be open by January 2019. “It will be fantastic to be in the heart of the community and have everything in one place,”

The Annual #Leading the Charge EV Road Trip from Bluff to Cape Reinga was in town for one of their 26 stops on the way north, to showcase the latest in electric vehicle technology, and give locals the chance to take a ride in one for themselves. #Leading The Charge is a community of drivers, enthusiasts, and advocates who are helping to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles in New Zealand by sharing their knowledge and passion through public events. “We want people to sit in the driving seat, because only then do they understand how wonderful it is,” says Kathryn Trouson, Better NZ Trust chairperson, “they are great for the environment, and so great to drive, so glorious.”

NMIT inspiring students beyond the plate Amy Russ For the past few weeks, local students have had a fantastic opportunity to get creative with food at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, alongside level 5 culinary arts students, with a 2 day event starting on April 11 featuring food-art installations, and a ticketed ‘Beyond the Plate’ canape party in the Rata Room that night. Chante Whitehouse, NMIT level 5 culinary arts student, approached all the schools in the Nelson region to take part. “We are really looking at food choices and brain food, inspiring thinking beyond just the plate,” says Chante. NMIT culinary arts tutor Chris Fortune says it is a student-led project, “They have to coordinate everything from the planning and the marketing, right down to the washing up. I am merely here to support them in their project, this is completely their creation.” All profits from the event will go toward the Code Purple Scholarship Fund in memory of past NMIT tutor Catherine Dunkley, which helps to give a student the opportunity to study the culinary arts. This week Chante has been working with 5 – 8 year olds who

We look at things like nourishment, food

choices, waste and brain food. It is also a celebration of Nelson and its wonderful produce and communities.” Year 12 Tapawera School student Jenna Crook says she has found it very interesting. “It’s a unique idea! As a kid you’re always told not to play with food, but now we can. The event has definitely peaked my interest in following a culinary path in the

future.” Chante says the April 11 canape party will be like going to a gallery. “There will be food on the walls that you can eat with a spoon, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or the World of Wearable Foods! We are lucky enough to have had an amazing response with sponsors for the event and the auction.” People can view the food-art installa-

tions and edible food-art canapes will be served. Interactive food demos, auctions and fun opportunities to have a go yourself will all be on offer. Opportunities for people to apply with their foodart are still open to all age groups, creative levels and abilities. This Easter, members of the Palmer family from Waimea West are coming together to celebrate the 175th anniversary since their ancestor’s arrival. In 1843 John Palmer arrived in Nelson aboard the ship Phoebe, and went directly to Waimea West where he had an allocated section and, to this day, family members have remained in the area. Establishing the ‘Volunteer Arms Inn’ John had a bush licence, and in the two-storey building of mud brick served travellers and those who crossed on Avis’s Ferry. Later, in 1863, The Gables was built for John using 60,000 sun-dried bricks as a general store and he carried on business until within a few days of his death in 1898. Today his descendants are “delighted” a restoration is planned for the protected historic building and during the family reunion a visit is planned. Believed to be the first family gathering of this size, John Palmer’s great grandson and namesake, John Palmer, says celebrating 175 years since their arrival was not something they should let slip by. “Although it’s been reasonably short notice we’ll have a gathering of around 50 people. They’ll be mostly Palmer descendants and those who have had a close association with the family over the years,” says John.

With hundreds of cheeses vying for medals and trophies at the New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards on March 15, Upper Moutere producer David Barrett didn’t have high-expectations. But David’s cheese-making enterprise, Thorvald, based in the Neudorf valley, succeeded, coming home with a total of five medals and three trophies. “We were over the moon,” says David. The awards aim to promote and develop the New Zealand cheese industry and are judged by a team of national judges to ensure professionalism, expert knowledge and credibility. They also honour the technical excellence in the manufacture of New Zealand cheese. David says to receive three trophies was “mindblowing”. Alongside the trophies are two gold, two silver and one bronze medal, with Thorvald’s camembert the only camembert to win a gold medal this year. “I’m a huge fan of camembert, it’s my go-to cheese but I love them all,” says David. After their celebrations in Auckland, it’s been back to business for the cheese producer and his team of six as they barely keep up with demand.

Nelson Matters President Obama’s visit to New Zealand last week hosted by Sir John Key has had me reflecting on how much I prefer hope over hate in politics. Sir John and Barack Obama come from opposite sides of the political fence in philosophy but have much in common in style. They project positivity and politeness. They are the sort of person you would love to have a beer with. They also both believed in a more open and cooperative world in which countries could trade together and come together on climate change.

I contrast that with some of the growing ugly politics around the world and at home. It is not just Trump’s ‘you’re fired’ style but the politics of slapping tariffs on trade and reneging on global environmental accords. I am equally repulsed by the fake elections in Russia with Putin, the chilling use of chemical weapons and the underhand interference by Russia in other countries elections. This macho, aggressive political style in New Zealand is represented by Winston Peters. I was aghast at his claim that there was no proof that

Russians were involved in the downing of MH17 that killed 298 innocent people including one New Zealander. Denying any Russian interference in the US election is like saying black is white. Mr Peters’ slow response to the use of chemical agents in the UK was unsavoury. New Zealanders know evil when they see it. We see the same sort of uncouth approach by New Zealand First Minister Shane Jones. I have no problem MPs challenging Air New Zealand over its regional air services, but the personal attacks and

all health. They are packed with nutrients, vitamins, and fibre to give you energy and, with teethbrushing, texture. The NMDHB Tasman Dental Mobile Unit has been in residence at Tapawera Area School with its two dental Oral Health Therapists and their assistants, so teeth have been very much on the forefront of their work.

rumour mongering against the chair and chief executive were crass. We see the same disregard for proper standards in the way Mr Jones is tossing out the $3 billion in the fund New Zealand First got from Labour as part of their coalition agreement. It is wrong that the first two big grants are going on a roundabout and new airport terminal just down the road from Mr Jones home, when no other region or airport had the opportunity. We also saw a grant made to people under investigation by the Serious Forward Office. This $3 billion

You’ve heard the expression, “an apple a day may keep the doctor and the dentist away!” Well, the history behind that expression is that apples have long been associated with a healthy smile. Also, it takes strong, healthy teeth to bite into a crunchy apple. The long and the short of it is that apples are excellent foods for your teeth and gums and for your over-

dollar fund equates to $2000 of tax paid by every kiwi household yet Peters, Jones & co is treating it like it is personal piggy bank I hope this rogue phase in global politics will pass. Rarking up a fear of foreigners only makes the world poorer and more dangerous. I also hope people will tire of bluster and bullying. We need to take a leaf out of Obama’s and Sir John’s book and strive for those timeless values of respect, honesty, reason, and civility. Advt.

Upgrade works will soon require the closure of the remaining Queen Street entrance to the Richmond Mall/Warehouse carpark. Extra pressure will come on nearby Talbot Street as shoppers use the alternative entry and exit points to the mall carpark instead.

In mid-April the roundabout will close for about six weeks to allow the remaining underground pipe upgrades, street reprofiling and streetscaping to take place. We have been working with the owners of the Mall/ Warehouse carpark to reduce disruption as much as possible, and will make some temporary changes to the layout of Talbot Street to help manage the extra traffic flows.

• a small temporary roundabout on Talbot Street at the middle entry/exit to the carpark to aid traffic flows in and out; • removal of several parking spaces on Talbot Street to improve visibility;

Although applications for Waimea Irrigators Limited’s (WIL) water share offer have been increasing significantly in the last couple of weeks, feedback about the need for additional time has led WIL to extend the closing date by two weeks until 5 April 2018. WIL Board member Julian Raine says they have received enough feedback from landowners and WIL Ambassadors – who have been meeting one-on-one with landowners throughout the process – that people need more time to consider the offer. “The reality is, six weeks wasn’t enough time for people,” Julian says. “It’s understandable that they have a serious decision to make and they need to wrestle with a lot of information. This takes time. The Board believes it’s best to ensure prospective shareholders have that time. We want to accommodate people as much as possible and take a sensible approach.”

Temporary roundabout planned for Talbot St Richmond residents and shoppers will soon notices changes in Talbot Street, as plans are put in place to manage a temporary increase in traffic during the next phase of the Queen Street Upgrade. Upgrade project manager Jeff Robinson says upgrade works will soon require the closure of the remaining Queen Street entrance to the Richmond Mall/ Warehouse carpark. “This will mean extra pressure will come on nearby Talbot Street as shoppers use the alternative entry and exit points to the mall carpark instead. Jeff said the effect on Talbot Street would be felt in two phases. The first would come within the next two weeks but would be relatively

short-lived. Phase 1: Short-term closure of Queen St/Wensley Rd roundabout. Jeff explains: “We need to close the Queen Street/Wensley Road roundabout within the next two weeks when our contractor, Downer, lays a new stormwater pipe across the roundabout. That will take several days but we will be able to maintain an exit for traffic coming out of the Mall/ Warehouse carpark turning left onto Queen Street. Once the pipe is laid, we will reopen the roundabout and carpark access for a couple of weeks. The roundabout will be open for Easter weekend.” The short-lived closure is a precursor to a complete and lengthier closure of the roundabout, due to begin in mid-April.

Phase 2: Extended closure of Queen St/Wensley Rd roundabout in mid-April. The roundabout will close for about six weeks to allow the remaining underground pipe upgrades, street reprofiling and streetscaping to take place. “We have been working with the owners of the Mall/Warehouse carpark to minimise the disruption as much as possible,” Jeff says. “We will be implementing some temporary changes to the layout of Talbot Street to help manage the extra traffic flows.” These include: a small temporary roundabout on Talbot Street at the middle entry/exit to the carpark to better manage traffic flows in and out; removal of several parking spaces on Talbot Street

to improve visibility; directing the contractor who manages traffic light signals to monitor traffic flows and alter the timing of the lights at the Salisbury Road/Talbot Street intersection if necessary. “We have carried out traffic counts at the carpark entrances and traffic modelling to work out the likely effect of the Queen Street closures on Talbot Street and the Mall/Warehouse entrances. Even with the measures we’re putting in place, there will be queues at peak times on Talbot Street and motorists should expect some delays,” Jeff says. “Once the work begins in the area of the Queen St/Wensley Rd roundabout, we advise anyone who does not absolutely need

to travel on Talbot Street during peak times to consider the timing of their journey and possibly use alternative routes. “This is going to be a challenging time and we do apologise for the inconvenience it will cause people. “The upgrade is currently on track for completion at the end of May (weather permitting) and we need to keep up the momentum to meet that deadline. “We’re grateful for the public’s continued patience with the works, which are going to deliver greater flood-resilience to central Richmond, stormwater and water services that are up to the task of servicing our growing urban population, as well as a modern, vibrant town centre.”

St Alban’s Appleby to celebrate 150 years

St Alban’s church in Appleby is seeking interest from those wanting to join in their 150 year celebrations in November. Photo: Supplied.

In 1868, just ten years after Nelson was proclaimed a city, a church was dedicated to St Alban and opened in Appleby by the second Bishop of Nelson, Andrew Burn Suter, within a few months of his arrival in New Zealand. Thus, St Alban’s Appleby this year celebrates 150 years of its life and Valerie Barnes, secretary of the organising committee, says they

are seeking expressions of interest from former parishioners and anyone who would like to be part of the celebration on the last weekend of November. They would also like to hear from people who have memories to share and/or photographs they might borrow of Appleby and St Alban’s that would help them formulate a programme for the

celebrations. Appleby School and the Suter Gallery are alongside St Alban`s Appleby to reflect together on, and celebrate the life of, this vibrant rural community over the decades. Readers can leave messages on: Phone 03 544 8844 Or alternatively please send emails: church.onhill@xtra.co.nz

Making the world a better place Every year, wonderful students present themselves for scholarships and awards with an outstanding school service record, cultural or sporting talent, A-grade results and, of course, leadership skills. Let’s not also forget huge costs they are anticipating as they head off from high schools to further their education. Network Tasman Charitable Trust was faced with the dilemma of finding the two who stand out amongst eight top students from local schools who are starting their studies in 2018. The Sir Wallace Rowling Scholarship offers $3000 each to two such students in the Nelson region. For only the second time in the 20 year history of the Scholarship, one of these scholarships went to a Murchison Area School graduate, Jemma Gibson. Jemma’s goal is to become a primary schoolteacher, but close to her heart is to volunteer in Fiji or in Ethiopia and later to work in the South Island. She has won many country music awards and has also led her Kapa Haka group in competitions. Jemma says “Kapa Haka has given me a much more advance understanding of Maori Customs and their culture and I have enjoyed participating

in Tikanga, learning Maori games and protocols”. Jemma hopes to incorporate this into her teaching when she graduates. Adam Currie was the other winner, from Garin College. Adam remembers all the books falling about his head in the library during the Christchurch earthquake. He’s enjoyed the chance that the move to Nelson gave him to attend a small school and get such a lot out of it. Scouting has also had a huge impact on his life and given him the confidence and leadership skills to take on issues of social justice and the environment, which are dear to his heart - both at school and in the community. Adam will study law and gravitate either towards the environment or human rights issues. Adam says “climate change and its many facets, including mitigation, adaptation and geo-engineering, will be a defining issue for my generation and I would like to be in the best position to address it”. Gwenny Davis, chair of the Network Tasman Charitable Trust which awarded the scholarships , says “We can expect to hear more from these leaders of the future. They have a lot on their shoulders and we are proud of them”.

Tasman residents seeking a different voting system for council elections should head to the Richmond Library to sign a petition urging Tasman District Council to hold a poll on the historic and, some say, unfair voting system used up until now. For the last 15 years councillors have decided among themselves how they get elected, though they could have given voters the chance for a From left, Penny Griffith and Victoria Davis help petition initiator Liz Thomas collect signatures say on the voting system. They have opted to continue with the “first past in Golden Bay. Photo: Supplied. the post” voting system for the next two elections. However, if enough voters sign the petition, there is an opportunity (through a poll of voters) for a proportional voting system. The poll could set in motion a process to change the system for future Tasman elections. The law allowing voters to choose the best voting system for their council election is set out in the Local Electoral Act of 2001. The First Past the Post (FPP) voting system currently used in Tasman means a candidate can win a seat with as little as 34% of the votes in a 3-candidate election, if voting is evenly spread. In this example, 66% of votes are in effect “wasted” and the candidates who missed out might feel that they had a raw deal. The alternative voting system being promoted by the current campaign would use STV (Single Transferable Vote), believed to be fairer for voters and candidates. That is because it is a progressive voting system, which ensures that a voter’s second and third preferences are counted, say the petition organisers. Response to the petition is very pleasing, says its initiator, Liz Thomas, “We’re getting a clear message that voters want to have their say in a poll. This is a great chance to move towards Proud supporters of a system that reflects our preferences in a more Wanderer’s Pig Hunt democratic way.”

If you have a rabbit that requires vaccination before this date it is advisable to keep your bunny inside until he/she is able to be vaccinated. (We will run a vaccination day weekly over the next couple

of weeks to get any unvaccinated bunnies up-to-date). Young rabbits under the age of 12 weeks require a booster 4 weeks after the first injection. Rabbits over 12 weeks of age require one vaccination. After this, the vaccina-

tions are given annually. The cost for vaccinating your rabbit is $58.50 and includes a physical examination. The booster vaccine (if required) is $48.50. As well as vaccination there are a few things you can do at home to minimise risk: Control insects (especially flies and fleas) as much as possible, both indoors and outdoors Remove uneaten food on a daily basis, Rabbitproof your back yard to prevent access by wild rabbits and avoid feeding cut grass if there is a risk of contamination from wild rabbits. Wash hands after handling any rabbit or equipment. If there is cause for concern - change your clothes, wash your hands, clean all beds, hutches, bowls, toys, etc with a 10% bleach solution (10mls bleach to every 90mls water) and leave on surfaces for ten minutes before rinsing well. Call Town & Country Vet today to book a vaccination for your rabbit and they will do their best to get your bunny in for an appointment as soon as possible.

A new strain of the Rabbit Calicivirus (otherwise known as Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus) is being introduced in the Nelson region. This virus is fatal to rabbits. There is no cure for sick rabbits, however rabbits can be protected with a vaccination and the current vaccine has been found to be effective against this new strain via a small trial carried out in Australia. If you have a pet rabbit and are unsure of its current vaccination status then contact your vet for advice on the best course of action for your furry little buddy. Flies are the main vector for the spread of the virus so even bunnies living in an urban environment can become infected. The vaccine comes in a 10ml vial and rabbits require a 1ml dose, and the contents of the vial expire quickly after opening. Town & Country Vet in Richmond will hold a rabbit vaccination day once a month to vaccinate a number of rabbits so as not to waste the vaccine. This day will be the first Tues-

Mapua Easter Fair set to impress

Some things are just better together

Amy Russ

It’s that time of year again when the Mapua domain will be swarming with families, music, stalls, laughter and, hopefully, sunshine. Now in its 36th year, the fair started from humble beginnings in 1982, in the back of a car boot by Patrick Hogan, and has grown to one of the region’s biggest events on the calendar with over 10,000 visitors every year. The fair will be held as is tradition, on Easter Sunday, April 1. More than 220 stall holders,

with arts and crafts, garden goods, and other miscellaneous stalls will be alongside a school run café, a second-hand store and a silent auction. The playcentre will also be opening its gates to provide a space for the younger children to safely play and for families to relax. A full day of free entertainment will be provided on stage along with other fun activities. The fair is the key annual fundraiser for both the Mapua Playcentre and Mapua school. and is organised by the Mapua Easter Fair Charitable Trust

Board. Kathryn Alborough, Mapua Playcentre Representative, says, “It is a fantastic fund-raiser and enables the playcentre to run throughout the year, and it is a great contributor to the community.” A guaranteed fun day out, the fair is completely family-centered. Entry is just $2 with free parking provided. Gates open at 9am. For more information head to www.mapuaeasterfair.co.nz or check out their Facebook page Mapua Easter Fair

Richmond readies to welcome rose expert

Heritage Roses has a strong and active membership in Nelson and are delighted to welcome on Monday, April 3rd, Olga Yuretich, President of Heritage Roses, and National Executive member, Noeline Hillier. Noeline will be giving a presentation on the Rose Family Tree. Roses can be traced to fossils 35 million years old- though it’s unlikely Noeline will be going back that far, but the history of the rose is a fascinating one. Most rose lovers are aware of the Peace rose released at the end of the Second World War, bred in France with one parent a Tea Rose. Tea roses have strong links to the China roses, a group of the oldest roses…. Come along and find out more. Olga embodies the aims of Heritage Roses. Her own very large farm garden houses the biggest collection of old-fashioned roses in Northland. They ramble and scramble up trees, drape along fence lines and create magical glades. Their perfume scents the air and, in this large space, grow

On Saturday, 17th March, the Brightwater Scout Group past and present members, families and friends celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the Scout Den in Brightwater. It was great to catch up with past Leaders and Members who were involved with the Scout Group before and during the building of the Den. They had some great stories and insight to share with the present members. From past members we learned that the Brightwater Scout Group was originally based at the Brightwater Railway Station, before moving to the Spring Grove Drill Hall and finally building its own Den on the current site in Brightwater.

Gina Grimwood, promotion committee member, says, “we are so happy, the turnout has been amazing!” It is hoped to be an annual event.

The Brightwater Scout Group wish to thank Joan Wills for making the anniversary cake and Tasman Bay Food Group for providing Juices for the kids. The Brightwater Kea section restarted last year and has been running for 12 months and, along with the Cub section, are at capacity. We would love to take more children into these sections but to do so we need more leaders. For more information please email brightwatergroupleadernz@gmail.com

Rex Taylor from Auckland says he had an excellent coach at the Open Day. He heard from a friend of his that this was on, and “thought it was a good idea. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it here, and fully encourage people to join the club!”. Photo: Amy Russ.

top of the south

It is no coincidence that daylight savings ends this weekend, the exact same weekend as the final curtain falls on another season of top shelf speedway. The Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway, in conjunction with The New Gate Company, bring to the fans the Easter Extrava-

ganza and it’s bigger and better than ever with drivers and riders from all over New Zealand converge here for two fantastic days of fast, exciting speedway. We have amongst us not one but four national champions here competing with current Superstock champion William Humphries, Three Quarter Midget champion Jeremy Webb and Sidecar cham-

pions Russell Stuart and Andrew Parker will be here, racing in their perspective classes. Other notable entrants include the very fast Palmerston North Superstock driver Rebecca Barr, while Josh Lockett from Wellington is here to compete in the very full Stockcar class. The Midget class also has a visitor from the North Island, as Jayden Wor-

thington will be towing his Midget all the way down State Highway One to meet the ferry. All classes have good fields and this weekend we will be running Sidecars, Three Quarter Midgets, Midgets, Stockcars, Superstocks, Super Saloons, Production Saloons (Saturday) and Youth Ministocks (Friday) The Sidecars have one of the biggest fields seen here in years and nearly all bikes are of top calibre, so racing will be absolutely intense. As mentioned earlier, the 1NZ bike will be trying to make its mark, but other competitors, include the 3NZ pairing of John Hannan and Bryce Rose from Whanganui as well as a multitude of bikes from Christchurch, Invercargill, Blenheim, and of course, our local riders will be doing their best to keep the silverware here in the Top of the South. This will be the class that will be hard to beat on the weekend. Another class that will entertain is the Stockcars as there are around 25 cars entered. Add into this mix the rivalries that have started over the last few meetings between a number of drivers here locally, just the pay backs alone will be worth the entry fee. Once again competitors from Blenheim, Greymouth,

Mount Maunganui, and Wellington are here to hustle and bustle their way around the track to take the honours. One thing to watch out for here are the number of female competitors who have entered in the Stockcars and, from our reckoning, it would be some sort of record for this class. Our very own Morgan Dumelow is joined by Caitlin Hayward all the way from the Bay of Plenty as well as Brittany Carpenter and Melissa Gifford from Greymouth. The Superstock class is in the middle of rebuilding its numbers this season but there is a handy field lined up to take to the Moutere clay for the Easter championship and Open club championships. The hardhitting 1NZ of William Humphries will be here once again, as will the 34P car of Rebecca Barr. Young local lad Brad Neiman has just purchased a Superstock and will contest these championships as well as competing in the Stockcars over the weekend, and there will plenty of eyes on his progress as he has been a front runner in the Stockcar class. Word around the camp fire is that a few of the local stockcar drivers are looking to move into the Superstock class which is great news for the future of Superstocks here in Nelson.

field with the addition of Jayden Worthington from Auckland. These guys really know how to put on a show! A small field of Super Saloons have entered for the weekend, but once again it’s a classy lineup with New Zealand Grand Prix winner Ian Burson here to race in front of his home crowd while Christchurch’s Trevor Elliot and Blenheim’s Shane McIntyre will try to keep him honest. This should be a good battle.

On the Friday night, the Youth Ministocks race for their last time for the season and for some of the kids it will be their last time in a Ministock as they come of age and move on to other classes. The class does wonders for these kids and the sport in general as more than once it’s produced our next champions. Saturday and it’s the turn of the Production Saloons to take to the track. These guys and girls have been under the watchful eye of the referees of late with a few “indiscretions,” so watch this space to see how this is going to unfold. All action, one would suspect. Gates open at 3.00pm and racing starts at 4.00pm on both days (Friday 30th, Saturday 31st) Please head to www.nelsonspeedway.co.nz for gate prices and ticketing info.

The flurry of kicks in the two rings were doing nothing to cut through the nervous tension that filled the air at the Tasman Nelson Marlborough (TNM) Taekwondo Championships on Saturday March 24 in Richmond. Around 120 competitors from Auckland to Invercargill were joined by a team from Tahiti to compete in the tournament open to all ‘World Taekwondo’ style colour belts and black belts, organised by 8-time New Zealand champion, Master Hamish Wybrow. ‘World Taekwondo’ is the style of Taekwondo that features in the Olympic Games and this tournament was essentially the same rules and competition style used at Olympic level. The Poomsae (patterns) and

Kyorugi (fighting/sparring) saw competitors from 6 years to over 40 years competing, including Ruby Nott from Richmond Taekwondo. With an extensive family history of involvement in martial arts, Ruby, who took up Taekwondo three years ago, was looking forward to her turn competing in the under-12 category in the ring. “I’m very nervous, I’ve spent a month training for this. I love the exhilaration that comes with competing,” says Ruby. It’s been ten years since the Nelson region has hosted a taekwondo championship event of this nature and, with the huge amount of spectator support and local sponsors on board, it’s unlikely the area will have to wait another decade.

Vaikea Papara, Tinihere Teriitehau, Keelin Clark and Lucy Routledge wait for their call up during the Tasman Nelson Marlborough (TNM) Taekwondo championships on March 24.

Riders rage after rain

Overall winner Warrick Spence came in just 16 seconds ahead of second placegetter Joshua Aldridge, both from Nelson. Photo: Emily Beaumont.

Although the event was spared any ‘really’ heavy rain, recent weather events definitely made the 106km Rainbow Rage mountain bike race challenging on Saturday, March 24. Renowned as a ride not to be taken too lightly, the event was established in 1996 as an adventure ride starting from Rainbow Valley and finishing up at Hanmer Domain.

This makes it one of the longest gravel-grind races in the country and emphasis is still on the adventure aspect with mountain bike enthusiasts encouraged to just get out there and do it. Covering reasonably challenging terrain and conditions that prevented any records, this year’s event attracted 140 riders aged from 13 years to 70 years.

Event organiser Mike Gane said that although sections of the road were “chewed out” from recent weather most of the surface was as “good as gold”. “Everyone had big smiles at the finish line. I was very happy with how it went and how the competitors handled the conditions and road,” says Mike. “We’re already looking forward to next year!”

Bowlers take title Marty Thompson and Don Rankin beat ten other bowling pairs to win the junior centre champion of champion’s men’s pairs at Wakefield on Sunday March 11. The Richmond pair went into the competition expecting to be “cleaned up in the first game”. Contrary to their expectations, Marty and Don found themselves in the ‘very, very tense’ final against Motueka that they won 14-12. “Elated and surprised” by their

win, Marty and Don say their next competition is the junior fours in Stoke before returning next year to defend their title. Marty an experienced sportsman who’s partaken in basketball, rugby, soccer, badminton, running and golf, says bowls is “an easy game to play but it’s not easy to play well.” At 80-years there’s no slowing Marty, who says he enjoys competing “even though I’m not get- Richmond bowls pair Don Rankin and Marty ting any younger and all the con- Thompson proudly showoff their latest silverware. centrating can be pretty taxing.” Photo: Supplied.

The Nelson squad heads away on the back of an unbeaten record at the South Island tournament, the Jim Kaat Invitational in January. Coach Marty Grant says the boys are looking forward to another tournament opportunity in

which they can test and grow their abilities. As a burgeoning sport in New Zealand, baseball attracts numbers and talent to the well-attended age-group tournaments. Follow the team’s progress at Club Nationals at: www.nelsonheat

baseball.org.nz. Nelson Heat would like to thank the generous sponsors who feature on this page. Without these companies backing our boys, the team could not get to Auckland to take advantage of this opportunity.

Huge triathlon event a success Peter Gibbs The Tineli National Schools Tri Champs brought triathlon action to Moturoa Rabbit Island last week. More than 600 triathletes, teachers, coaches, parents, supporters and volunteers made it one of the biggest events ever at one of Nelson’s favourite beach venues. From enthusiastic 10-year-olds to fully-grown under-19 competitors wearing national representative race kit, there was fierce competition with vocal support all around the course. Most of the Nelson competitors had not seen racing of this quality but still managed to come up with several medals over the two days of racing. Monday brought individual racing in triathlon during the morning, with competitors called upon to repeat their efforts in the afternoon with aquathlon (run, swim, run). Next up were the under-14 competitors. The field stayed close together in the opening run, with Isabella Thurlow of Waimea College close to the action. In a brilliant swim over 350m,

Isabella worked through the field to be neck and neck with the leader, from St Kentigern College, but with a squad of runners hot on her heels. Giving it everything over the final 1km run, Isabella crossed the line in second place, 13 seconds behind the winner, with the next three competitors finishing within the next nine seconds. The team events on Tuesday gave a chance for strong participation from the region, with entries in the Port Nelson Team Tag Triathlon consisting of the regulation two boys and two girls, and competitors in teams of random composition taking part in the Sujon Team Tag Triathlon. With each team member needing to complete a full short triathlon, many competitors were put out of their comfort zone, particularly when it came to the swim leg. As volunteer Tim Robinson put it: “… but come the team events, how wonderful to see how the camaraderie levelled out individualism. They cheered each other on. They cheered other teams on. True sport.” In the U14 Port Nelson race, the

Wai Col Racers, Paris Hart, Bailey O’Malley, Neve Anglesey and Lochy Mirfin came away with bronze medals. The U16 WC team, also from Waimea College, repeated that performance, Ella Ranson, Tia Hania, Jacob Neal and Patrick Keys taking bronze medals home. In the Sujon race, the combined Nelson College for Girls/ Waimea College team of Isla Richardson, Adam Clatworthy, Isabella Thurlow and Joseph Clatworthy took second place in U14. Just behind them, in the bronze medal position, was the Waimea College team of Jessie Brown, Ruby Campbell, Ryan Flowers and Sam Shelling. Josh Sheridan joined a team of athletes from all over the country to take a silver medal in the Sujon U16 team race. The event has been described as one of the best national championships of recent years, thanks to the venue, weather and the willingness of the more than 50 volunteers to make a success of hosting young triathletes from all over the country.
