Demand too much for cat trust Being dumped with 33 unwanted cats and kittens, and threats of euthanasia from cat owners, has forced the closure of a Brightwater-based cat rescue trust. Amanda Lee has been operating the Nelson Cat Rescue and Rehoming Trust for the past four years on top of a full-time job, but she made the decision to close the charitable trust after “the fun had been taken out” of it by irresponsible cat owners. “I had over 33 cats and kittens dumped on me two days prior to Christmas and at that time I still had more people wanting to give me more cats but I had to turn them away,” Amanda says. “But it’s just the attitude of people. They have a problem, they want to get rid of their cat and they try to push that problem onto someone else.” Amanda had funded the charitable trust herself because she wanted to help re-home cats that were in need. “I didn’t want to become a dumping ground for lazy people who haven’t bothered to de-sex their cat, or have a cat then decided they don’t want the poor

thing, and that’s basically what happened. The people I wanted to help were the genuine ones who were trying to find a home but just ran out of time.” Amanda says there had been threats of euthanasia from cat owners. “They said they’d drown the cat and it’s your fault. The rescue was something I set up to look after cats in my own time, just two or three, not 17… I don’t get how someone could dump their family pet in the first place.” Carmen Torrance of the SPCA was sad to hear Amanda’s trust had closed, and says people are too lazy when it comes to re-homing their pets. “People are leaving their pets too readily these days,” she says. “People need to try their best to re-home their own animal before they use an organisation. People are too quick to do that, they’re too lazy. We’re here to help but you need to try your best first, it’s your animal.”

Truck driver ‘lucky to survive crash,’ say police Police say a log truck driver was lucky to survive a crash in which his vehicle ended up in the Buller River on Friday. Sergeant Rob Crawford says the truck was travelling south towards Murchison when it failed to take a right hand bend, went through a fence, across a paddock and over a 30 metre bank into the river. The driver was stuck in the cab, which was partially submerged, for two hours before being rescued. Emergency services required the assistance of a river rafting company and jet boat operator to reach the crashed truck. The accident occurred about 10am on SH6, north of Murchison at Doctor's Creek. Police, fire, ambulance, river rafting crews and a jet boat were involved in the rescue. The driver was flown to Nelson Hospital by rescue helicopter. An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the crash and emergency services are assisting with the recovery of the truck.

Bank teller claims travel photography award A Richmond bank teller has won the coveted Cathay Pacific Travel Photographer of the Year award, beating top professionals from around the country. Joshua Donnelly, who works at ANZ Richmond, took his winning photos during a holiday in India last year and says the win is “quite amazing”. “I feel quite overwhelmed by it all,” he says. “I couldn’t really believe it to be truthful. I was a little bit shocked.” It was the first time Joshua had entered the Cathay Pacific Travel Media Awards. To be eligible for the award, each applicant must have had their photos published. Joshua wrote an article in D-Photo magazine and chose four of the photos which ran with it. “I’d admired this competition for a long time before I had even entered it. It was an ambition of mine to one day put some entries in, but it wasn’t until I got back from India and got the article in that I thought I’d give it a go.”

Judge Aaron K says Joshua stood out because he used strong, evocative imagery to create a visually engaging travel story that felt authentic and uncontrived. “His

photos were well composed, expertly captured, and beautifully presented,” he says. Joshua’s photography has been limited to a hobby over the years, but he’s now open to the idea of doing it for a job. “I wouldn’t mind. I’d definitely like to get into travel photography. I don’t want to get into weddings or anything like that.” Having the title of Travel Photographer of the Year is sure to give his photography portfolio a boost too. “Absolutely. But I need to be proactive and ask for the work. It’s not going to come to me, but I think this will certainly help. I’ve got a list of awards I’ve won, but for what I love and for what I want to do they can’t come any bigger than winning this.” For winning the award, Joshua will receive a return trip to Cambodia, where he hopes to take some more award winning snaps.

Wakefield opens modern classroom

Wakefield School officially opened the first of its modern learning environment classrooms on Friday – a building that has been specially made to suit the needs of a classroom with two teachers and nearly 50 children. Following the trend of Hampden St School, Wakefield and Tahunanui School both announced this year that they would jump into the Ministry of Education’s modern learning environment initiative – where multiple teachers can teach around 50-60 students in the one open facility. While the two other schools restricted their change to just Year 5 and 6 students, Wakefield made the entire school move into the new teaching style. Up until now that practice had still been used in their original classrooms, but on Friday Wakefield School officially opened a purposebuilt modern learning environment for Year 3 and 4 students. Wakefield School principal Peter Verstappen says the modern learning environment is a more democratic model, with team teaching. “Our idea is that if you give the kids opportunities that increase their engagement then their progress and achievement will follow,” he says. While he says this classroom, which cost $250,000 to upgrade, is the “gold standard”, other classrooms will also be upgraded over the next few years. “At the moment our curriculum is outstripping our spaces because they’re the old fashioned ones. But now we’ve started with this we’ll move through the rest of the school. It will take years, but that’s about money. We should have another five classrooms set up by the start of next year.”

Performers return to mall Garin dominates Rockquest Richmond Mall will be rocking again this Thursday night as the latest Richmond Mall Rock da House performance kicks off. Rock da House, which features most of the primary schools and intermediates in Nelson, has been a huge hit with performers and shoppers, says

manager Belinda de Clercq. This Thursday, Nayland Primary School will be performing for an hour from 6.30pm in the food court. The mini concerts in the mall are all in preparation for three big concerts in Motukea in August. Last year 3500 visited over the three nights.

Oh yes, Oh Blok have done it again. The Garin College band with a Nelson College drummer has taken first place in the Nelson Smokefreerockquest final for the second year in a row, and now they’re hoping to secure a spot in the national final. Oh Blok, which is made up of five members; Kieran O’Connor, Louie Persico, Paddy Sanders, Robbie Day and Sam Butler, was the last of 12 acts to take the stage and according to judge Ryan Beehre of Minuit, they were a “real cut above”. Ryan says the quality of their all-round performance was what handed Oh Blok their second win in as many years. “After last week I thought Oh Blok were the favourites and their songs were really good, really catchy,” says Ryan, who also judged the heats. “There was some really great talent here but I think they just had that little bit extra that said ‘yep, they’re an easy choice’”. Keyboardist Paddy says the win “felt so good” and was a “big relief ” for the band, who had limited preparation. “We came into this competition with a huge advantage, having the mindset of just

When we came up on stage we just wanted to play the music we enjoy playing.” Vocalist Kieran says Smokefreerockquest is always the biggest gig of the year, so the band just wanted to make the most of performing in front of a sold-out crowd. The task now is to qualify for the national final in Auckland in September, a feat Oh Blok failed to do last year. The top two acts from each regional final can submit a

For reaching the top two in Nelson, both bands won music gear from the Rockshop. ‘If I die, the money will go to my kids’ The dying father of six who is trying to raise $100,000 for a life-saving lung transplant says all the money raised will go into a trust for his six children if he falls short. Mike Corkill’s story – dubbed “Dad’s new lungs”, by his children – emerged several weeks ago and since then more than $10,000 has been raised. Mike has a condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension, which restricts oxygen being pumped through his lungs. If he doesn’t get a new set of lungs the condition will kill him. It killed his biological mother and grandfather. The surgery isn’t covered by the government because there is a one in seven chance he could have kidney problems after the surgery. Mike says if he doesn’t get the money needed by the end of this year, it’s unlikely he’ll be allowed to fly to India for the surgery with his condition. That means he’d be forced to wait until it kills him. He says if he dies before the $100,000 is raised, whatever has been collected so far will go into a trust for his kids’ education. But Mike is determined to raise the cash, allowing him to get a new set of lungs and a new lease on life. The family say they’ve had a fantastic week with more generous support from our community. Mike says he and his kids collected $1200 from the Richmond Mall over the weekend and around $2500 from a Waimea College mufti day on Friday. That brings the total close to $12,000. Mike says the support continues to be amazing. “I still can’t believe it. Everyone’s been great and the Richmond Mall, I can’t say enough about them, letting us into the mall to collect money. It’s really wonderful.” Other local businesses have also jumped on board. Brumby’s Nelson has a collection bucket on their counter and McDonald’s Nelson

shouted the family of eight a meal last week. A garage sale in Stoke last week raised $750 and Mike is upbeat about his chances. “We have plan B sorted. I’ve done my will and have all my arrangements with the funeral home done but I’m focused on not needing that. I really want to live to watch my kids grow up and I’m determined to raise the money, get the surgery and continue to live my life for as long as I can.” A fundraising quiz night at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms will be held on June 20. To book a table at the quiz night email mikesnewlungs@gmail.com. To donate, you can deposit into the Michael Corkill Appeal 38-9006-0093683-03.

The Renovators Chook show something to crow about NELSON LTD

Nelson poultry breeders are crowing about their egg-cellent results at the Heartland Poultry Show held in Timaru earlier this month, and are hoping to stay at the top of the pecking order at this weekend’s Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association Show at the Hope Hall. Barry Bensemann recorded his best result in 40 years of breeding poultry when his spangle game bantam won the Best in Show at Timaru and the top prize money of $1000. Rodger Buschl's white leghorn won the Best Light Breed, while one of the association's youngest members, Cameron Taylor, won a champion's ribbon for his muscovy ducks. The prize winning trio will be back in action at the Nelson

Show this weekend when they will be lining their pride and joys up against 500 birds from all over the country. "We have very good entries this year and they will be coming from the North Island and as far south as Timaru," show secretary Pam Buschl says. "The Nelson breeders did really well in Timaru so it will be good to see their entries here as well." Pam says the purpose of the show is to reward excellence amongst breeders as well as showcase the various breeds of poultry and pigeons to the public. It is also a chance for breeders to share ideas

and exchange breeding stock. Pam says this year's show has moved to the Hope Hall because they "ran out of room" at the previous venues of the poultry shed at the A&P Showgrounds and the Brightwater Hall. It will feature a section exclusively for Mediterranean breeds, which has attracted 60 entries, be birds for sale, raffles and a guess the weight of the rooster competition. The show will be held in the Hope Hall on Main Road Hope from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 1.30pm on Sunday. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children with families $5.

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz If Nelson’s claim to the country’s “beer capital” crown needed any more evidence, the results of the latest beer and brewer awards have provided it in spades. The New Zealand People’s Choice Awards, printed in the Australasianwide Beer and Brewer magazine, are dominated by Nelson bars, brewers and businesses, winning 23 awards between them. The Sprig & Fern has won best beer venue, best small bar for its Milton St franchise, best cider, best microbrewery/beer company and its owner and head brewer, Tracey Banner, was picked as brewer of the year. Stoke won best beer, for its Bomber Bohemian Ale, and finished runner-up for best brew bar, and third for best microbrewery/beer company. Its brewer Sam Wilson was runner up to Tracey as the country’s top brewer. Other local businesses also got in on the action. Matt Duncan from Founders Brewery was voted as runner-up in the best young brewer of the year, Scott Bradley from Rhythm & Brown was voted best beertender in the country, while Andrew Cole from the Moutere Inn was runner-up in that category. The Freehouse was voted best large bar

e l p o e p d o o f h s Y ou r f re Artist Lisa Chandler is heading to China for a two-month residency at Red Gate Gallery in Beijing. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Local artist off to paint Beijing Nelson artist Lisa Chandler likes painting people in densely populated urban spaces so it’s no surprise that she is heading to one of the world’s biggest cities for a twomonth residency later this year. Lisa has been accepted for a residency at the Red Gallery in Beijing where a population of about 21 million people should provide her with plenty of inspiration. It is the second time Lisa has been accepted for an artist’s residency after last year spending two months at the Instinc Gallery in Singapore, and she can’t wait to get back to Asia. “I’m painting people in urban spaces and I love the big cities so I decided to apply for the residency. I really enjoyed the scale of things in Singapore and the anonymity of working in the urban environment, so I can’t wait to go to Beijing.” Lisa says she likes to visit what she calls “non-places” including giant malls, airports and train stations where she can paint the “transitory and anonymous nature of urban life”. She says the fact that so many

people in these settings are preoccupied with cell phones and iPads and laptops makes them even more sterile and impersonal. Lisa, who paints with acrylics on large canvases up to 7.6 metres wide, says she is keen to experiment with some collages while she is in Beijing. She says the large canvases suit her style of painting which is being well received in the corporate market in Auckland. She is also looking forward to sharing ideas with the other artists in residence at Red Gate. The artists will be based in an old warehouse where they will live and work and get the opportunity to attend exhibition openings around the city. “It’s going to be a very cool environment and I’m really looking forward to interacting with the other artists. It will also be interesting to see what’s going on in contemporary art in Beijing.”

48 people face charges after cannabis recovery Forty eight people across the region will be facing charges as a result of the annual cannabis recovery Operation Lucy. This year 5266 plants were recovered, along with a further 17kg of dried plant material. Police also seized firearms and a significant amount of ammunition along with $10,000 in cash during the operation. In total, 38 search warrants were executed on properties.

Operation commander sergeant Rob Crawford says police found 172 cannabis plantations as a result of information gathered. He says there was a significant increase in plants located in Marlborough in the Havelock and Wairau Valley areas this season. Rob says the plants recovered were also in much better condition than those found the previous season, which was the result

of more favourable growing conditions through the summer. He says the recovery phase of the operation was greatly assisted by the Air Force providing its Iroquois helicopter. “It’s great for us to work alongside the Air Force who use the operation as training.” Rob says police were grateful for the information received from the public during the year as it also contributed to the operation.

“Rural people suffer a lot of loss and damage when there are cannabis growers in the area. Fences are damaged, diesel gets stolen and freezers get emptied. We know that if we can make life difficult for growers, crime in those areas will decrease.” While police are discovering more indoor growing operations, outdoor plantations are still a popular option in Tasman due to the climate and accessibility.

Last year my wife and I read about the Richmond Physiotherapy fitness classes for seniors in a local paper. We particularly liked the idea that these once-a-we ek, one hour sessions at the Lower Quenn Street Health were tutored by a professional physiotherapist and the class size was small. At 82 I remain reasonably active and enjoy walking and cycling. Both my knees had partial replacement surgery well over 10 years ago and last year one knee started dislocating every so often, when standing up, after it had been relaxed. I felt that strengthening the muscles, tendons etc, through exercise, might help – so we went along. The Gym has a good range of equipment manageable by all ages. There

is a program to enhance strength, balance and joint movement using exercycles, treadmills, weights, medicine balls etc. You can even lie on the physiocouch to do core treatment exercises or to have the occasional rest. The Staff are very helpful and you get individual attention tailored to your needs and level of fitness. Understanding the correct way to do each exercise and use the equipment is very important. Six weeks ago I had surgery to replace the bearing in my troubled knee. I was off crutches within a week and was again attending classes at the Gym. Both knees are now working better and feel stronger every week. Rowley Taylor 14/5/2014 Business Update. Adv.

Shopper wins competition to fly to Auckland for Annie Richmond Mall Manager Belinda de Clercq presented another lucky shopper with a major prize last week. Amy Henley won tickets to see the Annie musical in Auckland with her mum Jude Bethwaite. The competition has been running for two weeks from April 28-May 11 with the winner being announced on the Monday. Shoppers simply dropped their receipt and entry form into the box to go into the draw. Around 2800 shoppers entered the com-

petition in a bid to win two free tickets to Annie, one nights’ accommodation and flights from Air New Zealand to Auckland. Jackie Sampson came second and received a Revlon gift basket valued at 350 dollars and Liv Ord received an Elizabeth Arden gift basket worth 250 dollars. Belinda reminds shoppers that the Try it On and Win competition ends soon on May 31 so don’t miss out on winning 1000 dollar fashion voucher for your winter wardrobe.

Wednesday May 7: Paddy McMahon has searched high and low for Volume 36 in the 20 Solid Gold Hits vinyl collection. From Dunedin and Christchurch to Motueka and Takaka, in second hand yards and the Richmond Mall, but the album has continued to elude him until now. At five past eleven on Wednesday night, the day the Waimea Weekly came out, Paddy got a call that would see his Solid Gold Hits collection finally complete which has delighted both him – and his wife.

Works for us.

Wednesday, May 21: A 73 year old man was lucky to get out of his Main Rd Stoke house after it caught fire on May 19. As reported in last week’s Waimea Weekly, the man suffered facial injuries and smoke inhalation but made it ouside the house before being taken away by paramedics. Fire Investigator Craig Piner, says the fire was believed to have been started when the owner fell asleep while smoking. The cigarette was left to smoulder before the man woke up to find his bed on fire. Craig stresses the importance of having a working fire alarm in houses and says there are models available for those hard of hearing.

Wedding show a hit with brides-to-be Bridal heaven would best describe this year’s Nelson Wedding Show. The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology was the venue for the event and it was packed, not just with a range of exhibitors, but with in excess of 400 members of the public, eager for ideas and expert advice for their wedding day. Retro Fit Double Glazing

Poachers beware. Police regularly receive reports from people in rural areas who have been targeted by thieves stealing stock from paddocks. Mostly the animals will be shot on site and then the best bits of the carcase taken and the rest left to rot in the paddock. This is a really hard crime to police because the thieves are operating in a vast rural environment and police officers simply can’t be everywhere all of the time so the chances of being caught in the act can slim. We have to rely on rural networks keeping an eye on activities in the back roads of our area. Up until recently the penalty for someone caught poaching was a maximum $500 fine. The value of the meat or animals being taken could easily be twice or three times that cost. The good news for farmers - and the warning for poachers - is that the penalties under the Wild Animal Control Act have been reviewed and made significantly harsher. The maximum penalty is now $100,000 or two years in prison. I sincerely hope that sends a clear message to poachers that their actions could have very severe consequences and I can assure them that police will actively pursue any information in regard to alleged poaching. For all our rural readers, remember, if you see a person or vehicle in your area that doesn’t seem right, get the registration details and give us a call.

Add value, quieten your home, keep in the heat and save money. All using your existing wooden or aluminium doors and windows. You will be surprised how cost effective it is.

Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force members, from left, Doreen Helms, Paul Eggers, Ted Ford, Ken Connor, Nicole Jackman, John Russ, Robyn Jackman, Nick Davies, with their Isuzu water tanker at the Appleby Station last weekend. The Appleby Rural Volunteer Fire Force, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on June 7, isn’t just a group of dedicated men and women giving up their time to fight fires and help save lives at motor vehicle accidents. It’s a whole community getting behind the fire force to make sure it can continue doing its job. The Appleby Rural Volunteer Fire Force only has 16 members but controller Paul Eggers says they are all supported by a much bigger network of families, friends, employers and businesses.

“We get great support from the community and employers and we wouldn’t be able to operate without that support,” Paul says. “I work at Seifrieds and my boss lets me use the workshop for maintenance on our equipment and tanker. “I also walk to work so any time the siren goes off, I just use any vehicle to drive to the station. We also get really good support from all our families. I can remember getting called out to a car accident when we were having my daughter’s birthday party - it can be hard on families.”

Council provides a free service that’s aimed at making your family home warmer, dryer and healthier. Council’s Eco Building Design Adviser Richard Popenhagen, is available to come to your home and offer impartial advice on the best heating solutions for you, including tips on how to save power and money. Many of Richard’s ideas are low cost or no cost and tailored specifically to your own home. For those people with woodburners, Richard can also provide advice on how to use

them properly to reduce smoky emissions. Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee earlier this month recommended establishing a working party and stakeholders group to help with a review of the Nelson Air Quality Plan (NAQP). It also committed to carry out extensive air monitoring work this winter, with a report due back to Council in November. Committee Chair Brian McGurk says that Council is unable to make any changes to the NAQP straight away. “For any plan change to work, it must be supported by current data and good science. That’s why we’ve recommended that $100,000 is set aside to carry out a whole lot of information gathering this winter, including engagement with residents, compliance and air monitoring, as well as modelling work across all the airsheds. Nelson juniors regain cup

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

Nelson’s junior tennis players have claimed the Gardiner Trophy for the third time in four years. The Gardiner Trophy is the largest junior tennis fixture on Nelson Bay Tennis Association calendar and is contested between players from 10 years through to 16 years of age. In total, 32 juniors from Nelson competed against Marlborough in singles, doubles and mixed doubles at Tasman Tennis Club on Sunday. Marlborough won the trophy last year, but were no match for Nelson who pulled out all the stops to win 36-20. The Nelson 10 year olds dominated their age group with a final score of 14-2. Ryan Mairs and Kvido Tayerle showed particular fortitude, coming back from 5-2 down to win 9-8 against Oscar Sandford-Jury and Liam Blackmore. However, the Marlborough 12 year olds proved too strong, edging ahead to a 10-6 win. Sa-

Lop-sided results in Prem 2 netball

WEDNESDAY 28 May 2014

Waitohi gain upperhand For the first time in 2014 Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers have lost a game of rugby, going down 7-3 to Waitohi. But that one loss may have huge consequences if Saturday’s victors can continue the rest of the Bayleys Tasman Trophy undefeated. The decision to change the Tasman Trophy format to a full round robin with no playoffs, meant Saturday’s winner was always going to gain a huge advantage over their previously undefeated opponent. The good news for Wanderers is they can still win, but they will have to rely on some help from Waimea Old Boys or Nelson.

Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The Premier 2 grade continued to be a lop-sided affair with huge margins in all three games. Nelson College for Girls Senior A dominated all facets of play to defeat Waimea College B 67–28, while promoted-from-last-season Richmond Black accounted for Jacks Pro Netball 49–33. Richmond Bombers had almost twice the possession of Rival Cougars to run out 50–26 winners. Richmond began the game strongly, scoring four of the first five goals. Richmond had an absolute feast of ball as they had three times the amount of attempts than Rival in the first quarter. Goal attack Jane Lawson was content to be a third feeder to shooter Ashleigh Della Bosca, who while not returning great shooting statistics, was a fierce rebounder to gain a second opportunity. Richmond lead 12–7 at the first break. Rival looked to be hitting their straps when they scored five unanswered goals to get within two of Richmond. However, the comeback was short lived when their goal attack, Renee Jepson was forced to retire with an ankle injury. While Hanna McLaren stepped up to the plate to net some fine long range shots she could not match the accuracy of Renee. Richmond lead 24–17 at the major break. Richmond moved up a gear in the second half with Jane as the general in the offensive line. Goal keep, Heidi Stewart applied pressure to her opposite and rebounded strongly to push her side to a 50–26 win. Rival’s defensive trio of Hayley Maw, Loren Heaphy and Erin Hartley toiled to halt the flow of goals while midcourter Chelsea Routhan made a good fist of her first game of the season.

Waimea finish fourth at Hillary Challenge Waimea College saved its best until last, winning the multi-sport race on the final day of the Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge held at the Tongariro Outdoor Pursuits Centre to finish fourth overall after five tough days of competition. It was a top performance by the Waimea team which showed speed and fitness in the trekking, mountainbiking and canyoneering stages of the rogaine during last week’s national outdoor team’s adventure challenge for year 12 and 13 students. Waimea had earlier finished fourth in the team initiatives held on the opening two days and retained that position during a two day rogaine around Tongariro’s rugged alpine terrain. Teacher and team coach Jane Orbell says the students also showed a huge

Jackson Carver and Elliott Kennedy completing a water challenge at the Hillary Challenge last week. amount of resolve and determination to bounce back from a 250-point penalty on the first day of the rogaine. The team lost half the points it had collected by finding check points around the 60 kilometre course because it failed to set up a camp near water by the cut-off time of

5pm. “They looked for a stream that was on the map but there wasn’t any water in it so they missed the cut-off,” Jane says. “They were devastated and had to dig really deep to overcome that mistake.” Jane says she was delighted with the result which was a big improvement on last year’s eighth placing. The key to that improvement was “excellent team work in the group initiatives” on the first two days. “We were easily as fit and fast as the top teams and our navigation on the rogaine was just as good.” New Plymouth Boys and Girls won the event contested by 12 teams. The Waimea Hillary Challenge team was Nathan Sturrock, Lachlan Brownlie, Jackson Carver, Elliott Kennedy, Michelle Heslop, Katie Malthus, Libby Malthus and Ali Burrell. le is e tipp lu a v t s the g a be ks of Findin ith my pic w -earth wn-to simple o ore, d r uch m . Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Waimea chalk up 52 points in Blenheim Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys coach Mark Milne is happy with where his side is at the moment - not surprising after they put 52 points on Moutere in their first trip to Blenheim for the season. In wet conditions, Moutere were no match for Waimea, who have now won two on the trot in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy after the 52-8 victory.

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz “We’re pretty happy, considering as soon as we kicked off it absolutely bucketed down. It was torrential for 30 minutes so I was really rapt with the skill level we showed.”

Mark concedes it’s always harder when playing over in Blenheim, taking into consideration the travel, which the team is unfamiliar with, playing every game in Nelson so far. “It’s always harder when you’re away from home. I don’t know why but it always is.” With two losses to their name, Waimea would have been happy to hear that Wait-

ohi, a team they still have to play, managed to upstage Wanderers 7-3. “If people keep beating each other then it’s good for us because we dropped a couple at the start of the year. For us to climb back up we need people to knock each other over.” Waimea will host Kahurangi at Jubilee Park this Saturday from 3pm in the next round of the competition.

and just one loss to their name, that coming against Wanderers, meaning a win would have allowed them to over-take Riwaka who were on 19 points. Waimea will remain in the top four despite

the loss, and have an opportunity to stake their claim in the top part of the standings again this Saturday, taking on New World Huia at Jubilee Park. Huia sit in fourth place on the Car Com-

pany division two table and cruised past Rangers 51-12 on the weekend. This Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:15pm, before the Car Company division one match at 3pm.

Tasman District Council proposes to review its Dog Control Bylaw and associated Dog Control Policy. We encourage feedback from anyone with an interest in the proposed bylaw, with a consultation period over five weeks to allow plenty of time for you to make a considered submission. The submission procedure is detailed below. This “summary of information” is made to fulfil the purposes of Sections 83(1)(a)(ii) and 89 of the Local Government Act 2002 and summarises the Statement of Proposal to review the existing Dog Control Bylaw. The majority of the existing bylaw is carried over to the proposed replacement bylaw, however a number of new provisions have been proposed in response to issues raised with the Council. To assess these issues a workshop was held on 3 April 2014 between Council staff and Councillors to consider the viability of suggested changes/additions to the existing bylaw. The proposed bylaw should be construed as being entirely new and submissions may be made on any element of the bylaw not just the proposed changes. However, it may be helpful to highlight the key changes proposed to the existing Dog Control Bylaw following the Council workshop: 1. The area covered by the dog ban in Takaka to be increased as shown in Schedule 3 of the proposed bylaw. Access to Commercial Street will be permitted for dog owners outside of normal business hours i.e. 9.00 am – 5.00 pm on weekdays. 2. The Jimmy Lee Track (Richmond) to be made a leash control area. The area affected runs from Jimmy Lee Creek Hill Street/Milne Place entrance to Hill Street (Hart Road) entrance, see map in Schedule 1 of the proposed Bylaw. 3. That, due to potential “bird strike” issues at Nelson Airport, the area of Sand Island under Tasman District Council control becomes a dog prohibited area, see Schedule 3 of the proposed bylaw. 4. The Tasman’s Great Taste Trail Bylaw 2012 has various controls on dogs at different parts of the trail. Clause 20 has been added to the existing Dog Control Bylaw and reads as follows: 20.1 The Tasman Great Taste Trail Bylaw 2012 prohibits dogs from certain sections of the trail. For details of dog prohibited areas see: www.tasman.govt.nz/policy/policies/bylaw/tasman-s-great-taste-trail-bylaw/ The Dog Control Bylaw should not be taken to contradict any of these provisions. The full Statement of Proposal including the proposed bylaw and policy may be inspected during ordinary opening hours at the following places: Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Richmond Tasman District Council, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka Tasman District Council & Library, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison Tasman District Council, 14 Junction Street, Takaka District Library, 280 Queen Street, Richmond Motueka Library, 12 Pah Street, Motueka Takaka Memorial Library, 3 Junction Street, Takaka A copy of the full Statement of Proposal may be viewed or downloaded from the Tasman District Council website at: www.tasman.govt.nz All submissions on the proposal are to be in writing using the attached form and posted or delivered to Dog Control Bylaw Consultation, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, 189 Queen Street, Richmond 7050, or they may be Emailed to info@tasman.govt.nz or faxed to 03 543 9524. Submissions will be received at any time from 8.00 am on 2 June 2014 to 4.30 pm on 7 July 2014.

Due to compulsory training requirements, building inspections will not be scheduled on Wednesday July 9. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience. A duty building control officer will be available at the Richmond Office. Please contact the council on Ph. 03 543 8400 to arrange an alternative inspection date.
