WOB need to break losing streak Page 22 Garin turns trash into treasures Gum wrappers, used takeaway coffee cups and fencing wire metal aren’t usually the kind of materials used to make fashionable clothing, but that didn’t stop a group of creative Garin College students turning rubbish into wearable art at the RAW exhibition on Friday. The Recyclable Art that’s Wearable exhibition was held as part of the college’s two-day arts festival, Mahi Toi. The students came up with some intriguing and humorous design concepts which they transformed into 22 stunning outfits. Emma Flanagan used scrap material, copper wire and fencing wire for her outfit entitled Flowery Night. Emma says her mother, Heather, who makes children’s clothes, “had lots of scrap material lying around” and that inspired her to make her dress using that material. A parent’s addiction to coffee inspired Caitlin Roberts, Georgia Binns and Jade Alborn to make their costume from an old sheet, shoelace, singlet and “lots and lots of coffee cups”. Entitled Dad’s Addiction and modelled by Jade, the outfit featured a skirt made of coffee cups and a top from the cup lids. The top outfits will be on show at the Mahi Toi Showcase at the Hope Community Church on July 5 and 6. Tickets are available at the Garin College office.
Judene Edgar A new $130million retirement village and an ambitious residential subdivision is being planned on 50 hectares of land near Richmond. The plans for the Special Housing Area (SHA) adjacent to McShane Rd and Lower Queen St were approved by the Tasman District Council last Thursday. It was one of eight applications for SHA’s approved by council under the new Tasman Housing Accord which is designed to fast-track houses onto the market, and should provide at least 1281 new sections. The retirement village will be constructed by Arvida and set on eight hectares within The Meadows residential development. The Richmond West Development Company, owned by Andrew Spittal, Simon Collett, Gary Donaldson and Graham Vercoe, says it is in response to an acute shortage of residential land in the Richmond area. “It’s the right decision and it’s great to see that there’s some forward-thinking councillors looking ahead to the future,” Andrew says. Waimea College to get eight new classrooms Waimea College will be getting even bigger after the Associate Minister of Education Tim Macindoe, announced on Tuesday that the government has allocated around $4 million in the 2017 budget to build eight new classrooms at the college before the end of next year. Waimea has been at capacity for the last few years with a record roll of 1577 at the start of the year. The number of international students also increased from 50 to a record high 60 this year. It had to employ 14 new staff including eight teachers to handle the increase, as well as turning away 48 out-of-zone students. Principal Scott Haines stated earlier in the year that “we are absolutely at capacity now” with a staff of around 200 including 144 teachers. However, Waimea College received some good news during Tim’s visit to Nelson on Tuesday when he made the announcement. “This first round of school infrastructure investment in Budget 2017 will provide a total of ten new classrooms to two schools in the (Nelson-

The hop industry is growing, with three new hop farms being planted for next season as the demand for speciality hops for craft beers continues to climb. There are 18 growers with 450 hectares of hops around the Tasman district which is the only place in the country where they are commercially grown. Those growers produced 760 tonnes of hops this season but that’s set to increase to around 1100 tonnes as at least three new farms and another 200 hectares come on stream over the next four years. Hops New Zealand chief executive Doug Donelan says the new farms near Tapawera, Tadmor and Korere are the first plantings “forever” and reflect “an upswing in demand for hops”
based on the popularity of speciality hops used in craft beers. Doug says many of the speciality hops have been developed by Plant and Food Research in Riwaka which has another “two promising cultivars in commercial growing plots after having been selected through research brewing trials.” A massive 733 tonnes of this year’s harvest were New Zealand varieties with 185 tonnes made up of the popular variety Nelson Sauvion. “The good thing we have going for us is that we have some unique varieties,” Doug says. “That’s allowed us to push our way into the craft market in New Zealand and overseas and that’s where the high value is.” Doug says one of the interesting trends has been the increase in domestic demand for hops “which has grown considerably in the last five years.” The

Move over Pokemon Go, the newest augmented reality (AR) craze is ‘Magical Park’. Magical Park is an AR application, for six to 11 year olds, that transforms a normal park into a digital fantasy playground with the help of a smartphone or tablet. Unlike virtual reality which replaces the real world with a simulated one, AR ‘augments’ the real world with computer-generated sounds and images. Hope School has led the charge with a Magical Park in their playground. Principal Freya Hogarth says that she attended an IT expo for schools earlier this term accompanied by 10 year old Cameron Fitzsimmons, and he chose Magical Park. “I like how it’s augmented reality, not virtual reality”, says Cam. “You have to run around yourself rather than just move icons like Minecraft”. Cam felt pretty special being selected to go to the expo. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but when I got there I was really glad I went. I was the youngest one there – the rest were 13 or more”. Hope School has a two-month free trial but are also working with developer Geo AR Games to provide feedback on the games. There are three games available that have kids herding kittens, running away from a bad fairy or coming face to face with a giant T-Rex. “There’s certainly a place for it within schools”, Freya says. “It engages children and has them outdoors, and we also have the students writing about the games”. Tasman District Council is following suit with Magical Park available at Ben Cooper Park and Bill Wilkes Reserve in Richmond from July 1. If you have a device with GPS and WiFi, then you simply download the Magical Park app and start playing.

Simon Bloomberg Appleby School pupil Louella Thompson was so disappointed when she read about thieves stealing life-saving rescue equipment from the Nelson Coast Guard rescue boat earlier this month that she wanted to do something to help. And last Thursday, Louella and her year three and four class put their rescue plan into action, serving up a school lunch to raise $352 for the Coast Guard. The Mad Butcher also helped, donating sausages for a sausage sizzle which was followed by a delicious apple crumble made from ingredients donated by Hoddys Orchard and school parents and served in paper cups donated by Pomeroys. “No one should steal anything but it was even worse stealing from people who saves lives,” Louella says. “I was really shocked when I read about it and just wanted to help.” Year three and four teacher Alison Hart says Louella read the story to her class during their current events lesson and all the children decided they wanted to do something for the Coast Guard. Alison says the children initially discussed donating their pocket money but then came up with the idea of a school lunch to raise funds. “I liked the fact that they all showed so much empathy to the Coast Guard,” Alison says. “But I’m especially very proud that they came up with an idea to help and then carried it through – it was all their idea and they did all the work.” The school hopes to donate the proceeds to Nelson Coast Guard next month.

Queen St speed reduced to 30 In an effort to create a safe, pedestrianfocused environment, at its meeting last Thursday the Tasman District Council agreed to reduce the speed limit along Queen St from 50kmh to 30kmh. The decision follows a consultation period in March which saw a total of 37 submissions. Of these, 24 supported the reduction, 6 opposed and 7 were neutral. The reduction applies to the section of Queen St from Gladstone Rd to Salisbury Rd as well as the full length of Sundial Square. As part of the upgrade the current raised ‘courtesy crossings’ will also be removed and the carriageway will be narrowed. The changes come into effect August 1.

Supporting healthy living Moturoa consultation acknowledged Tasman District Council has been named as a one of 17 finalists in the 2017 Local Government New Zealand Excellence Awards. The council is a finalist in the Fulton Hogan Excellence in Community Engagement Award for its Moturoa/Rabbit Island Reserve Management Plan consultation. Judges for the awards are former Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast, Chair of EQC Sir Maarten Wevers and The NZ Initiative’s Director, Dr Oliver Hartwich. The winners will be announced at the LGNZ Conference in July. Spread the warmth Research by University of Otago’s public health department has found that NZ homes tend to be old, poorly constructed and, by international standards, inadequately insulated. For older people, being cold can result in atrial fibrillation, stroke or malfunctioning of their heart. Age Concern Nelson Tasman is running a ‘Spread the Warmth’ campaign this winter to support older people. They are calling for donations of blankets, warm coats, hot water bottles and warm socks. All donations can be dropped off at their offices at 62 Oxford St, Richmond.

Cancer is not generally considered a “polite topic of conversation” over your morning cuppa, but for the members of the Nelson Haematology Support Group, it’s a critical part of life, and living. The support group was born out of the need to help “normalise” the inevitable journey that people diagnosed with incurable blood and bone cancers, such as leukaemia and myeloma, face. Founding member Graham Sturgess says that “you can feel awfully isolated ... living with a death threat over your head”. There is no cure, so “we’re just on hold for as long as we can be – that makes it a little bit different”, says fellow support group member Lloyd Kennedy. Despite having a terminal condition, talk of death isn’t common-place. Support group member Rita Tyrie emphasises that a key focus of the group is about supporting you to “live as best as you can, while you can”. Blood and bone cancers are often incredibly rare, meaning that for many patients some-

While they discuss anything from stem cell transplants to wheatgrass, overseas medications to physiotherapy treatments, Lloyd says that “sometimes you just need to speak to someone else – someone who isn’t a nurse or doctor”. “Being able to talk to others, hear about what they do to stabilise [their heath] is so very im-
portant. There’s nothing like the support of people who’ve been there or who are going through it”, says Lloyd. Graham and Lloyd first met at the quarterly education sessions run by the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, but identified a need for localised peer support. “Our aim is for people to know that there’s somewhere for them to come where they can feel supported
and understood”, Graham says. Lloyd says that he generally leaves the meetings “feeling very positive and thankful for the health and time I do have”. The Nelson Haematology Support Group meets every second Tuesday of the month. event on the car calendar. “It’s just incredible. Every year new people turn up. It changes every year.” He thought it might suit a car club, association or even a business looking for something to use as a promotional tool. Steve says he has always wanted the Motor Show to be for everyone. “Even if you bring along a $500 car or a $500,000 car you will be treated the same. You get a young fellah, with a $500 car he is proud of that. When he is 50 like the rest of us he will end up with something different.
He should be encouraged and the older ones can do that.” Steve says he still wants to be involved but acknowledges other people might have better ideas. “I don’t want the quality to go downhill. It has put us on the map.” There is no money involved as the event runs as a charity, but there is a variety of chattels that the show has accumulated over the years. Steve says he will hand all those over. He says he can stay on to help, or if the new organisers want him to step aside he is happy to do that. “I’m happy to guide someone along or let it go.” Anyone interested can call Steve on 0211393316.

After four years, organiser Steve Steele is offering over the event to a likeminded party to help take it to the next level. “It’s time for me to step back, it’s getting busier and bigger every year and it’s getting too big just for me.” The show attracts thousands to Tahunanui Beach each year to check out classic and vintage cars, hotrods and even aircrafts. Dire situation The TDC’s predictions of doom should they fail in their aspirations, it seems the only prophecies missing are pestilence and plagues of frogs and locusts. The only factor which would bring about such a “dire” situation for the district is that the irrigators, masterminded by Waimea Irrigators Limited, would have been allowed to continue throwing vast quantities of water around as they do now despite a forecast of a particularly dry summer. I am reliably informed that in fact much of this waste is merely to use up their allocations since TDC operates a “use it or lose it” policy. John Nichols, Brightwater.
Dam essential So, pleased to see your comments and writing, regarding the dam. I have talked to a lot of urban people, and lifestyle people who just don’t think it is their problem as the water has been coming out of the tap, with the odd dry summer affecting their lawn and garden but not their day to day washing. With the urban spread, there will be a need for more and more water, 45 years ago Richmond had about 7000 people, at the present rate of growth we will soon be three times that population and where will the water come from. Come on TDC councillors and urban people, get your heads out of the sand, this is not just an irrigators and river level problem, it is a shortage of water, which got shelved nearly 50 years ago because of costs, please don’t make the same mistake. I for one don’t want to go back to washing and showering once a week, this is not scaremongering, it is the cold hard facts, and I’m pleased to see Simon write word for word what an old codger like me with no tickets or qualifications, other than plain common sense, has been thinking for a long time, even back to 1970s, after the shelving of the water supply from Lake Rotoiti to follow the old Railway line down. John Harwood QSM Poll against dam All ratepayers in Tasman received the TDC Newsline Dam Special Edition and the Proposal for Financing and Governance Consultation outline for the Waimea Community Dam in October 2014. In both documents TDC stat-
ed that in April-May 2015 all ratepayers would have the opportunity to vote on whether the dam should proceed or not. The ratepayer poll was approximately 100 for and 900 against in the Financing and Governance Consultation after which the Mayor issued a statement that the council had taken on board the ratepayers call for user pays. Two weeks later, the Mayor then announced that he was including $25 million in the 2015-25 LTP for ratepayer share of funding the dam and cancelled the promised consultation with ratepayers over whether to proceed with the dam or not. As a result, TDC have no mandate to justify any spend on this project. Paul MacLennan Delay costs money After reading your paper on June 21, I was very surprised a solution to the water problem has not progressed further. There can be no doubt that we have a water supply issue, summer water restrictions confirm this! With the continued growth of the district this problem will only increase, potentially affecting daily life and commerce for all. The only reason the cost is so high now is due to the problem not being dealt with in a timely manner and should have been addressed years ago when it was first identified. The delay and indecision is costing the district dearly. The councillors that have voted against progress obviously are considering the next elections and not doing their job - considering the needs of the district. Tracy Tyson

e l p o e p d o o f h s e r Y ou r f Tasman District Council communications officer Beth Catley with historian Rob Packer, centre, and Waimea South Historical Society’s Roger Batt with one of the posters that have been put up on the construction barriers on Queen St in Richmond. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Back to the future Judene Edgar The Waimea South Historical Society is keen to remind residents what the town used to look like, as the Queen St upgrade is set to change the face of Richmond once more. Rob Packer, who runs Richmond Antiques and Curios, came up with the idea to put together history panels about Richmond, after seeing a call-out by Tasman District Council for suggestions of how to beautify the ‘construction box’. The ‘box’, which is made up of white panels, helps to reduce noise and dust from the Queen St road works, and is already home to colourful chalkboards, reality-altering mirrors, and information about the upgrade. “There aren’t many history panels in Richmond”, says Rob, “so it seemed like a good opportunity to remember the town’s history”. Teaming up with Roger Batt from the Waimea South Historical Society was the next logical step. Rob has an extensive collection of historic postcards and photographs, and supplemented these with photos from private collections and the Museum. Roger’s job was to research the history, talking
to relatives of some of Richmond’s founding fathers, trawling through The Prow and Papers Past, as well as Jean Sutton’s book ‘How Richmond Grew’. While it’s taken hundreds of hours, Roger says that “it’s been a real labour of love because we’re both interested in history”. “I collect anything to do with history”, Rob says. The panels are located on the ‘construction box’ outside the Richmond Library, which, according to the panels, was once the site of Holdaway Undertakers and Builders. While there aren’t many of the original buildings still standing, the panels take us back to a time when butchers and hotels lined the streets, you could get almost anything you wanted from the General Storekeepers building, and there was no better place for butter than the Richmond Butter Factory. Council communications advisor Chris Choat says that it was a fantastic opportunity to be able to show “what is happening, what has happened, and what will happen in the future”. Rob and Roger are hoping to find a permanent home for the panels in a central location in Richmond once the upgrade has been completed.

Searching for Weka

Finding every single weka within the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary’s 14m pest-proof fence is no easy task. The curious bird is the single most vulnerable species in the sanctuary’s upcoming poison drop, so getting them out is a top priority, according to their Ecosystem Ranger, Robert Schadewinkel. Armed with a wildlife sound machine, cheese, cage traps, hand nets and a noose, they have managed to move 24 birds to safety since they started their “weka hunt” two weeks ago. “The general estimate is that there are 40 to 60 weka in there, but it really is impossible to know,” Robert says. “We are just catching as many as we can.” There are also low numbers of robin, morepork, harrier hawk and New Zealand falcon within the fence, however Robert says the majority of these native birds will be completely unaffected by the poison operation. “The pellets are coloured green, which is a colour generally ignored by birds and not mistaken for food. However, with weka being

And, just before the drop takes place, Robert says they will scour
the same area again, as more weka will move down into the “vacant spaces”. “The lower part of the sanctuary is prime habitat for weka - they love the undergrowth,” says Robert. “They are very territorial birds, so if they see a vacant space they’ll move down into it – the lower part is the best real estate.” Currently, Robert says that
young weka are at danger of being eaten by stoats and feral cats. “If they are desperate, they will go for a weka, but the adults are resilient,” he says. “But, once predators are removed they will bounce back like rabbits, it’s going to be mind-boggling.” A final count of the rescued weka will be made available by the sanctuary in July.

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: Finances are really tight since
I had to go on the benefit. If I pay my bills this week, I won’t have enough for food. What should I do?
A: I recommend that you prioritise essential
living costs such as rent, power and food; other bills and costs are secondary to these needs.
Urgent bills? Contact Work and Income to see if they can assist you. Reduce the cost? Contact the places you owe to discuss a weekly repayment plan that is manageable. Too much debt? Contact a financial mentor for more information. If you need assistance with food: First, contact Work and Income about getting a Food Grant. If Work and Income cannot help, ask for a letter to say you have used your entitlement. Take the letter to a Nelson Food Bank agency and request a food parcel. There are several delicious and free community meals available: Mon 6-7pm Impact Church Tues, Wed, Thurs 12pm Loaves and Fishes ($2) Fri 5.30-6.30pm Victory Community Centre Sunday 4-6pm Pioneer Park Angels Trio A number of social agencies have small stores of food for their clients who are experiencing hardship and are in need of a meal. From gangs to God Charles Anderson Matiu Rota just wanted to be accepted. He had come from a broken home and wanted a family. So he turned to gangs - to drugs, alcohol and violence. “I never knew love as a kid growing up,” he says. He had his first criminal conviction at 15-years-old and served several terms in prison for offences like assault, burglary and aggravated robbery. At 26-yearsold he found himself homeless - living in a burned out house on Auckland’s streets and contemplating his life. “I had no family, no friends, no hope, no future … I was a drug addict. I had uncontrollable rage and I was looking back and started to reflect on my life.” He thought about suicide. But when he was at rock bottom he met, by chance, with a pair of Christians. “They spoke to me about
What is your next step in life? Learning that is fun
Matiu Rota was a gang member at rock bottom when he saw the light. Now he wants to help people who were just like him. Photo: Charles Anderson. Jesus. Then I started going to church.” He says it was like walking into another world. “The hardest thing for me was to understand what love was. I never remember being loved as a child.” But in church that was all they spoke about. He came off the streets and into the home of one of the parishioners. He started to look at his life in a way he never had before. Matiu started to figure out how he could forgive his father for abandoning him as a baby and how to forgive his mother for disowning him when he was 15. “There were a lot of tears and a lot of pain.” Matiu says he was never taught about right and wrong growing up, so it was
a process in understanding what that meant and being “set free” of that baggage. About 10 years ago, he did. He started going to Bible College. Then in 2014 he started studying counselling at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. He gained his certificate and is now having a break from studying towards his degree. “I want to help people. I want to use the experience I have had to be used for good.” Matiu, a single dad to an 11-year-old son, says it gave him tools for his own personal development. In 2008 he started his own ministry called “The Peacemakers”. The non-denominational church uses some of the motifs and language
from gang culture to help give those who are embedded in it an alternative to the life they are leading. “We don’t believe a church is confined to four walls. It is wherever we are.” He says other churches have looked down on them because they don’t “fit into a box”, but he has seen the good they have done. They also don’t believe in preaching the gospel. “We live it. I don’t want to be in people’s faces.” But that does not stop the public often getting the wrong idea when he and his parishioners are out in public. They wear leather jackets with patches and are heavily tattooed. But these ones read things like “Child of God” and “Jesus Christ.” Matiu has a facial tattoo, as part of his full moko, that reads: “Jesus Christ for Life”. “We are taking familiar concepts to people from gang culture and turning them around in a biblical way,” he says. Matiu says he doesn’t mind people judging them from their appearance but many do come and speak to them about who they are. “Some don’t take the time to read what we wear. They see patches and judge. But we are all human and this is about looking further than just skin deep.” Matiu says he and the church do not have anything to prove. “We are just thankful that we were taken out of the darkness and hope that we can be a light.”

temporary closure
closing for 90 days for remodelling, including a larger restraurant and upgrades. We want all our lovely customers to know that all of our signature dishes are available both as takeaways or in-house at our other restaurant, the lemongrass. thank you and see you soon! Since opening its doors back in 2010 on Richmond’s Queen St, Chai Yo has provided a staple takeaway menu for many locals and a warm, welcoming restaurant for sit-down dining. Owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum are proud of how far the restaurant has come in the last seven years and in a bid to improve what they can offer their loyal, local customers, they will be closing the doors to Chai Yo temporarily for a full renovation. Chai Yo’s last night of service will be this Saturday, July 1, with work on the popular Thai restaurant scheduled to take place over the next three months. While Bu-nga and the team are excited about the changes they have planned for the restaurant, their loyal customers have expressed sadness over the temporary closure, which is why Bu-nga and Nuttavut will be doing all they can to accommodate Chai Yo fans at their second restaurant, The Lemongrass. From Chai Yo’s mouth-watering menu, 10 signature dishes have been selected by Bu-nga and Nuttavut and will be served at The Lemongrass for the duration of the restaurants closure. The Lemongrass’s kitchen will be rearranged to accommodate the cooking equipment needed to re-create Chai Yo’s popular meals, which include their crunchy chicken with creamy curry sauce, Thai green and Thai red curries, their Pad Thai, fried rice and more.
As well as in-house dining, customers can also order these dishes to takeaway, for the same price as they were at Chai Yo. So with the favourites taken care of thanks to The Lemongrass, loyal customers can get just as excited as the Chai Yo team about the renovations. Not only will the restaurant receive an interior update, it will also be extended into what is currently the Red Cross shop, taking their 30 capacity dining room to one that can seat around 50. While undertaking a renovation is enough to keep anyone busy, Bu-nga and Nuttavut are also hard at work on the creation of their new restaurant in Nelson, focusing on Thai and Chinese dishes. The pair wishes to thank their customers for all the positive feedback and support they have received for Chai Yo and The Lemongrass over the years, and are sure their future Nelson customers will feel the same about their latest hospitality venture. Open seven days for lunch from 11:30am until 2:30pm, and dinner from 4.30pm until 9:30pm, you’ll find all your Chai Yo favourites, cooked by authentic, experienced Thai chefs, at The Lemongrass. Located at 294 Queen St, there is plenty of parking in Harkness car park, with access to The Lemongrass available beside Arthur Wakefield Motor Inn. Bookings are encouraged and can be made by calling The Lemongrass on 544 4838.
The Chai Yo team look forward to seeing you after the restaurants upgrade. From left, Wanlapa Krataitong, Sanga Boonperm, Sa-at Pinta and Bianca Eyles-Leggett.

A splendidly blended tale Pinegrove Kindergarten students were treated to the launch of author Jerri J Pirc’s new book, ‘Kate and Caboodle in a splendidly blended tale’ on June 9. The book is a sequel to ‘Kate and Caboodle’ published in 2015, which tells the story of Kate Caboodle’s family of birds and animals, which has grown so big that she needs to move house. The characters have been delightfully brought to life by award-winning Mapua illustrator and graphic designer Jane Smith. Jane’s favourite character is the goat riding the tractor, whereas for Jack Carmody, 4, his favourite was the pig. The new book follows Kate and her critters as they load up the old red truck once again, and head out on new adventures. After reading her book to the

Project Jonah wins community award Charles Anderson The inspiring work of volunteers helping save dozens of whales at Farewell Spit has seen Project Jonah come away with the Supreme Award at this year’s Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards were announced Monday night at a function at Seifried Estate Winery. Trustpower community relations representative Emily Beaton says, “their volunteers are the ambassadors in the community, sharing and educating people on how to help marine mammals, volunteering assistance at training
courses, community events and strandings.” Nelson Tasman is home to 337 trained marine mammal medics – everyday people who have undertaken training and are prepared to respond to marine mammal emergencies, anytime, anywhere. On February 10, Farewell Spit experienced the largest whale stranding for 100 years. Volunteers stopped their everyday activities and responded, attending the four-day incident, volunteering thousands of hours providing leadership, helping on the ground and giving support. “They are heroes,” Emily says. “Leading their community in the
rescue efforts, and as a community we couldn’t be any prouder of them.” For winning the Supreme Award, Project Jonah received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. Project Jonah now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2017 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held in the Queenstown Lakes District in April 2018. Other winners were Fynn Sawyer for Youth Spirit, Mapua School for Heritage and Environment, Menzshed Waimea for Health and Wellbeing, Sukita Project for Arts and Culture, Coastguard Nelson for Sport and Leisure and

Just a thought... It’s cold out there. Well at least it is in New Zealand. My wife and I have been lucky enough to spend the last three months traveling overseas where the weather was a lot warmer. New Zealand sits at the bottom of the world and like so many, we wanted to make the most of the effort it is to get anywhere. We visited a number of countries in Asia and Europe and saw some incredibly beautiful sights as tourists. Being a couple that likes to walk we became aware of the, often, thin veneer that exist around these places. For instance, in Jordan we were taken aback by the plastic litter that blows across the sands. In most countries if you ventured far enough you were confronted with the issue of rubbish. What’s this got to do with
Rev Martin Harrison, Brightwater Community Anglican Church. down under New Zealand? Are we guilty of presenting ourselves in the same way – showing the good side and not acknowledging the areas we need to do more work? Personally, I think we often
do. That is why I found it refreshing reading a post of a friend who pulled over to take a photo of New Zealand scenery, and the first thing she saw, after the epic scenery, was rubbish. So many pre-mix alcohol and energy drink cans lying in the grass clearly thrown out of the window by people who didn’t care. Her first reaction was anger but then she did the unusual, and picked it all up, leaving a beautiful place unspoiled. Yes, people will continue to litter, but this person’s action showed the battle is not lost. We often can’t change others but we can change ourselves and what we do. What action could you personally take today to care for this wonderful creation God has given to us to enjoy and look after?

Winter orienteering proving popular Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Nelson Orienteering Club’s mid-week winter rogaine series is getting hundreds of people off the couch on these dark, cold Wednesday nights and out running and walking on the streets and bush tracks around Nelson. There have already been three of the four rogaines and, with just one more to go at Tahunanui on Wednesday, the club has been amazed by the popularity of the series. Around 150 people competed in last Wednesday’s rogaine around the Grampians and club president Dave Mangnall says it’s been great for the sport and, also, the club’s mapping programme. “We use the proceeds from the night rogaine series to help pay for our mapping programme so we’re pleased
we’re getting such good numbers,” Dave says. “We always need to update our maps as the features change and put out some new maps and that costs money.” Dave says the maps are initially updated using satellite imagery to identify any changes in features such as new buildings or tracks. The changes are “field checked” by club volunteers using GPS technology that “talks to a software system” before they are mapped. Although there are some very experienced orienteers competing in the night rogaine series, Dave says one of its big appeals is that it is family-friendly with plenty of parents and their children coming along. “The younger kids seem to really enjoy it. You often see the mum or dad with the map doing the navigating and the children running along with the clue sheets checking off the clues – it’s

Wakefield competitive against classy Suburbs Reserves
Phone 544 9037
Simon Bloomberg Wakefield couldn’t repeat its early season win against Nelson Suburbs Reserves, losing 2-0 in their Nelson Pine Industries Division One football game played at Wakefield Domain on Saturday. Wakefield came back from a 0-2 deficit to win 4-2 when the two teams played earlier in the season, but couldn’t contain a strong Suburbs team on Saturday. The Suburbs team boosted by Mainland League players, including Campbell Banks, secured its first win of the season after goals to Ryan Stewart and and Daniel Grimshaw. Wakefield coach Dave Emerson says the team played well against a quality Suburbs team that dominated most of the match. “I thought we played alright considering they had quite a few Mainland players in their team,” Dave says. “We haven’t won too many games in the last few years and we’ve won three this season so we are quite happy.” Dave says the team’s younger players, Joseph Rozga, 15, and the youngest of the five Marshall brothers, Kieran, aged 18, both stepped up on Saturday. All five Marshall brothers, Kieran, Justin, William, Loren and Gabriel, were on the field together for the first time this season. “Joseph went very well. He’d played for the under-17 team in the morning so he had a busy day,” Dave says. In other games, Joey Turner scored four goals for Richmond Athletic in their 7-1 win over Motueka at Jubilee Park, while FC Nelson beat Nelson College 3-2 at the Broads. Richmond leads the competition on 29 points, six clear of Nelson College 1st XI after 11 rounds. FC Nelson is third on 22 with a game in hand, Sprig & Fern Tahuna fourth on 20 and Wakefield fifth on 12.

Waimea Old Boys RFC

Waimea Old Boys needs to break losing streak Simon Bloomberg Waimea Old Boys A co-captain Ben Eder is confident his team will return to form in time for the business end of the season after a 54-7 defeat at the hands of a rampant Wanderers side at Jubilee Park. An under-strength Waimea failed to fire in their Nelson Bays division one rugby game last Saturday, trailing 39-0 at half time and eventually conceding eight tries in the onesided encounter. It was Waimea’s third straight loss since beating Nelson in the Tasman Trophy final and Ben says it’s time for the team to drag themselves out of the slump. “We had quite a few players away on Saturday, but that’s no excuse,” Ben says. “We
were outplayed by a better team on the day. “It’s been tough since we won the Tasman Trophy but I’m confident that the guys know what do at this stage of the season. We are not far off our best and I’m sure we’ll come good when it comes to semi-finals footy.” However, Ben concedes their season won’t get any easier this Saturday when they take on a Kahurangi team that upset Nelson 29-27 at Riwaka last Saturday. “It’s a crazy competition and you can’t afford to take any team for granted. Kahurangi tipped up Nelson at the weekend so they’re going to be a challenge, especially over there.” Waimea Old Boys plays Kahurangi at Sports Park Motueka on Saturday starting at 3pm.
