Land gift for Mapua community health project Simon Bloomberg A proposal to establish a communityowned health centre in Mapua has been given a boost after retired farmer and businessman Dale Vercoe offered to donate land for the project. Mapua GP Tim Phillips outlined a proposal for the centre at the Mapua and Districts Community Association meeting earlier this month. The centre would be based on land off Mapua Drive and include residential, palliative and emergency health care - it would be independent of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and funded and run by the community. Tim says Mapua needs a community health centre because the public health system is failing and the community needs to take the initiative to secure its own “health safety”. Although planning for the centre is still in the preliminary stages, Tim says the proposal is receiving plenty of support from people in Mapua. “I feel a big concern for what is happening to community health in New Zealand and there should be something

Slow going for whitebaiters Simon Bloomberg Whitebaiters around Nelson and Tasman are hoping that their patience will pay off, after a frustratingly slow start to the season. Nelson whitebaiter Pat Melville has been a regular on the lower reaches of the Waimea River since the season opened on August 15 and says catches

have declined after a reasonably promising start. “There was a bit of a run earlier on but it’s dried up since then,” Pat says. “But it’s still early in the season so we are still hopeful - we’ll just have to wait and be patient.” Pat’s whitebaiting friend Kevin Tippett of Richmond is also optimistic that catches will pick up, but in the meantime

he is still more than happy to be out on the river. “We’ll be lucky if we get enough for a pattie today the way things are going,” he says. “But it’s a good day out and it’s another day away from the garden.” A little further upstream, Noel and Joc Davis were not faring any better. The Richmond couple, who have been white-

baiting for over 30 years, were not getting their hopes up after spotting just one whitebait heading up the Waimea River. “It’s our first day out today and I’ve only seen one whitebait - I don’t think there’s much around.” It appears that the Waimea River is not the only place

Land gift for Mapua community health project FROM PAGE 1 we can do as a community to try to make this a safer, better place for us to live,” Tim says. “New Zealand has a failing health system and this is going to get worse, not better. “People being discharged from hospital when they are not ready and even private health care is under pressure with quite long waiting lists so, as a community, we need to and step up and try and do something to have some certainty of health safety.”

didn’t get going until Labour Weekend then we had one lady who got 218 pounds in a day in a sock net and regular catches of 30 to 40 pounds.” However, Dirk says it’s often hard to know if the

I’m not saying it’s going to easy but it’s not going to be hard.” Tim says the Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital in Motueka shows community health initiatives can succeed and is a blue print for their project. Tim says they will be officially launching the project at a meeting in the Mapua Town Hall on October 19 and anyone interested is welcome to attend.

A ban on displaying for sale signs on cars parked on Richmond’s Salisbury Rd will come into force in November. The ban is among several changes to parking restrictions on the street introduced by Tasman District Council last week. It was prompted by concerns from schools about the safety and visibility of students

being picked up and dropped off on the busy thoroughfare, as well as the availability of parking for the general public and school communities. Council will be keeping an eye on how the public responds, to make sure the problem doesn’t shift elsewhere. Other changes to parking restrictions will also be implemented by council from November 1 including new two-minute parking

Slow start to voting Tasman residents don’t seem too excited about this year’s council elections with just 6603 or 17.96 per cent of eligible postal votes being returned earlier this week. Voting packs have been sent to enrolled voters and voting opened on September 16. All voting papers must be returned by midday on October 8. However, ElectionNZ statistics showed on Monday that voting was slow especially in Richmond and Motueka where 2030 or 17 per cent and 1442 or 16.7 percent of votes respectively had been returned. Voting was highest in Golden Bay where 938 or 24.2 per cent had been returned with 487 or 18.7 per cent in Lakes-Murchison and 1706 or 17.6 percent in Moutere-Waimea. At the same time in the last three elections in 2013, 2010 and 2007, 16.46 percent, 18.88 percent and 20.78 per cent of votes respectively had been returned. Tasman electoral officer Sandra Hartley is encouraging people to get their papers mailed in time to be counted. “Some of the main reasons people give for not voting are they forgot, ran out of time or were too busy,” Sandra says. “So, to make sure people give themselves the best chance to have their say we are encouraging people to vote early on Vote Day (this Saturday). “It’s a good week out from the close of the polls so the perfect opportunity to make a day of it and get involved in the democratic process. The local government elections are a one-in-three-year opportunity to have your say.”

Richmond Rodeo dumped Simon Bloomberg Cowboys and girls won’t be saddling up for the Richmond Rodeo next year after the club announced this week that the popular annual event at the A & P Showground is being canned. President of the Richmond Rodeo Club, Ian Parkes announced on Tuesday that the rodeo is “going into recess” after running for over 50 years. Although the rodeo had been under pressure from animal rights group SAFE as well as battling financially over the last few years, Ian says that had nothing to do with their decision. “The club’s going into recess because there is a lack of enthusiasm for running the rodeo,” Ian says. “I’ve been doing it for five or six years and (club secretary) Tina Angus and (treasurer) Sharon Nisbett have doing it for a bit longer. “We want to get out but there’s no one put their hand up to take over. The club has got some new members but no one wants to take on any leadership.” Ian says the club’s financial position is sound after the rodeo made small profit last year. It is also unconcerned about criticism from SAFE,

Hello Readers, Spring is here and it is so lovely to have the warmth of the sun upon our faces, not that winter was difficult. The real estate market is very active and I have sold lots of rural and lifestyle properties in the last two months. It is true when I say that I have buyer’s queuing to view property. Everyone is asking, 'where are the buyers coming from, are they all from Auckland?' I have sold eight lifestyle properties each with a value in excess of $1.3 million in the last nine weeks and six have been purchased by local folk. One has been sold to a lovely farming family from north of Auckland and another to a retiring lifestyle farmer from Hamilton who is moving to be close to family. The rural and lifestyle property is in demand, if you are keen to know the market value of your property then give me a call – you may be pleasantly surprised – and it goes without saying, your confidentiality is guaranteed! Look out for next week’s property report, I will be releasing my own web site where you can download heaps of information about my property listings without the hassle of contacting me first, how easy will that be for you! Have a great week.

Action from the Richmond Rodeo at the A & P Showgrounds. The rodeo has been canned indefinitely because of a lack of volunteers to organise the event. which he says is “misguided”, and had no influence on his decision to step back from the rodeo. “SAFE are a pretty small minority and they don’t appreciate that we are all farmers and understand and respect animals,” Ian

says. “If I treated animals badly, I wouldn’t be in business.” The rodeo attracted a crowd of between 2000-2500 each year and Ian says “I’m sure there will be people who are disappointed”. Richmond Rodeo Club is donating it’s

facilities to the A & P Association to be used by “anyone who comes along and wants to run a rodeo”. The SAFE Facebook page has a post saying ‘Fantastic news! Richmond rodeo won’t be going ahead this season.’

WAKEFIELD VILLA TEAROOMS This lovely Wakefield Village tearoom was established in 2012 and quickly became the most popular gathering point for young, old and everyone in between. It was always busy catering for causal and formal So Many Options functions, and a lovely place to take a friend for coffee and cake. Unfortunately the owner became unwell and the business had to be closed. The good news is that every single thing that is required to re-open is all there, right down to the knives, forks, teaspoons and teapots. The ambience is delightful, French doors open to a large cottage style garden that has been designed to encompass outdoor tables and chairs in a private secluded setting. The main dining area is set out with tables and chairs made from recycled native timber salvaged from the Christchurch earthquake. The commercial kitchen has been equipped with everything that is required to run a successful café business and everything is in as new condition. All you have to do is renew the annual premises sale of food licence with council (which is a formality) and you can open the doors again. At the front of the Villa and to one side is a separate building that could be used as part of the café or leased as a craft shop, gift shop, antiques or similar retail business. Get ahead in life, establish your own business and reap the benefits. This property with land, buildings and plant is for sale without good will. A comprehensive marketing brochure is available including a full chattels list and full plant and equipment list. This is a one off unique opportunity to establish your very own business in a very popular location. Contact Lydia on 027 432 8532 to view today! $50k to clean P from Richmond rental Kate Russell

A local landlord has spent almost $50,000 on fixing up their rental property after a previous tenant had contaminated it with methamphetamine, and is now warning others landlords to tread carefully. The Richmond property had been managed by a local rental agency, and the landlord, who did not want to be named, says the contamination levels in the house were so high that “every-

thing had to go”. They have already spent $21,000 in the clean up, decontamination and testing to meet government safety standards, and another $24,000 so far for the replacement of disposed contaminated materials, including wall coverings, carpets, flooring, drapes, basins and the heat pump. “The sad and frustrating part is that the same management company who recommended and placed this tenant in our rental home, knowing what they have

Councillor attendance: Trevor Norriss has been the most diligent Tasman district councillor in the last three-year term, attending 135 or 92 per cent out of the 147 council meetings. At the other end of the scale, Mark Greening attended 104 meetings with Tim King (105) and Zane Mirfin (106). Tim was overseas for two months last year. Michael Higgins attended 131 meetings, Stu Bryant and Brian Ensor both attended 130 while Judene Edgar, who was also overseas for three weeks on a humanitarian aid project earlier this year, attended 125. Mayor Richard Kempthorne attended 116 meetings. McGlashen Pharmacy scholarship: Applications to Richmond’s McGlashen Pharmacy’s annual scholarship for teenagers 16-years and under are open. The $1000 McGlashen Pharmacy Young Achievers Scholarship is open to young people across Nelson-Tasman who excel in sports, music, outside interests or academically. Houses contaminated through the cooking or smoking of methamphetamine is a growing issue in the Nelson region, resulting in a growing number of businesses that specialise in detecting it. Just one session smoking the Class A drug, also known as P, could be enough to produce a positive test result. Steve Williams, general manager of the Drug Detection Agency for

Nelson and Marlborough, says they have seen a steady growth in business over the past six months, with the majority of requests coming from the rental property market and people looking at buying ex-rental properties. “This is really where we believe any potential contamination problems may be,” he says. “Despite having worked on the Police National Clandestine Laboratory Team for a number of years, I am still surprised at some of the properties which have

tested positive for methamphetamine, and I have also been surprised at some of the properties which haven’t. You cannot judge a book by its cover.” Steve says that, locally, the majority of the houses giving positive results have been at fairly low levels, which could suggest that they were as a result of smoking methamphetamine, as opposed to manufacturing it. Police confirmed that there have been no P labs found in Nelson this year.

high alert to stop the invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug from entering ports across New Zealand. The insecticide-resistant bug is a serious pest outside New Zealand, voraciously eating horticulture produce, including apples, grapes and tomatoes. MPI believes the bug is likely to establish itself in an urban setting if it gets past the border, so the ministry is alerting gardeners, city councils and other urban groups. “We want anyone who sees a brown marmorated stink bug to catch it and call MPI.” Report any sightings to the MPI hotline, 0800 809966.

Nelson Fire Station turns 150: As part of the Nelson Fire Brigade’s 150 year anniversary celebrations, an open day was held Saturday morning. It attracted a number of families wanting to learn more about the service. As well as a range of historic vehicles on display, including a horse-drawn pump from the early 1900s, current fire fighters also performed demonstrations of fire fighting and rescues. Friday featured a reunion of current and exfirefighters while on Sunday there was a farewell breakfast, bringing the 150 year celebration to an end.

Council loses two of the best Simon Bloomberg

The pragmatic, no-nonsense approach of Trevor Norriss and the phenomenal work ethic of Judene Edgar will be missed after the two long-serving Tasman district councillors signed off at their final meeting in Richmond last Thursday. Trevor, who has been a MoutereWaimea ward councillor for 18 years, and Judene, who has represented the Richmond ward for the last nine years, have been key members of council. Trevor has chaired the engineering services committee for most of that time while Judene has been community development committee chair for the last three years. Although they have attended countless council meetings and helped make decisions that have shaped the Tasman district, both Trevor and Judene say working with volunteer groups has been one of the highlights of their time on council. In fact, it was Judene’s involvement with volunteers that led to her standing for council. “I’d always wanted to contribute to the community and try and make a difference so I went to an information meeting for potential councillors to find out what it was all about. I was very interested but I was also pregnant with Matthew at the time so decided not to stand. “Three years later I was working closely with [councillor] Stu Bry-

ant and volunteers on the Murchison Community Centre and Stu said ‘we need people like you to stand for council’. I always had a lot of respect for Stu so his remark was the catalyst.” Judene says she holds the volunteers involved with the Moutere Hills Community Centre in extra high regard after they showed “amazing community spirit and resilience” to get the centre back on track after two devastating fires. Trevor says the volunteers in the Tasman are “incredible” and that “rates would be a lot higher or these things wouldn’t get done” without them. He also maintains that the volunteers are “the people who never whinge to council because they are too busy getting on and doing it”. In contrast to Judene, Trevor didn’t have much time to consider standing for council, only signing his nomination form 24-hours before the nominations closed. At the time, he wished he had never made a comment that led to his nomination, but 18 years later he has no regrets about spending all those years on council. “Council had been putting cultural and natural landscape areas onto properties without consulting the land owners and a lot of rural folk were annoyed about it. I made some comment about that in the paper and said council needed to get their act together. “Then I started getting some

Tasman district councillors, from left, Judene Edgar, Trevor Norriss and Martine Bouillir at their final council meeting last Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. phone calls saying ‘you are right, this council is out of touch with rural issues’ and asking ‘what are you going to about it?’ I said ‘nothing, I’m too busy’ - I was vice president of the New Zealand Deer Farmers at the time and had been on their national council for eight years. “I was doing silage and I got a phone call and Linda [his wife] came and got me and said ‘they want you to go to the Moutere Pub’. There was a group of people there and they had a council nomination form filled out for me and they said here ‘sign this’it was the day before nominations closed.” Not only did Trevor sign and get onto council, he topped the poll in a landslide election that re-

sulted in a new mayor John Hurley and eight new councillors. Judene has also consistently been one of the highest polling councillors and she and Trevor put that down hard work. “I didn’t do any advertising during the first election campaign and I’ve never done any since,” Trevor says. “The first election sign I ever put up was this year when Michael Higgins asked me to help put his up and then I helped Barry Dowler put up his because he needed a hand. “I think the only advertising Tim [King] and I have ever done was a note in the Waimea Weekly after I got in saying thank you to all the voters. The fact is, if you work really hard and people are satisfied with the job you are doing

you stand a good chance of being voted in.” In addition to working with the district’s volunteers, Trevor says the other highlights were completing the Ruby Bay By-Pass and developing the Abel Tasman Foreshore Reserve. Upgrading nearly all the district’s sewerage plants may not sound inspiring but Trevor says he’s also immensely proud of it. Judene says the council’s role in developing Saxton Field was a highlight along with signing off the Rabbit Island management plan at her final meeting last week. Judene was a member of the Saxton Field working group and says “it’s an amazing asset for the whole region”. After 18 years, Trevor says it’s time to step down from council and spend time catching up on all the jobs that have been ignored. “I hope to get a bit of time off and do a bit of fishing and whitebaiting but there’s all these people who want me to all these jobs. My wife has a long list of jobs for me to do and so do my kids so I won’t have any trouble keeping busy.” Judene says she decided not to stand again because “nine years is a good time amount of time to be on council.” She plans to spend more time with her family and studying towards a Graduate Diploma in Communications. “I wish I was leaving because I had this amazing job offer but it’s just that the time is right.”

e l p o e p d o o f h s e r f r Y ou Daffodil Mini’s new owner Jo Johnston with her car. Photo: Andrew Board.

Daffodil Mini back in Nelson Andrew Board Nelson’s rather large Mini fascination has been piqued again with news the region’s famous Daffodil Mini is back in town. The Daffodil Mini was fully restored by the Caffeine Crew of Wakefield and businesses that they were able to rope in to help. The Mini was raffled off in early 2014 with $110,000 raised and donated to the Nelson Cancer Society. The Mini became a community project and was wheeled throughout town so people could view it and buy raffle tickets at $50 a pop. Among the businesses that supported the project were Bowater Motor Group and Sun City Paint and Panel. Sun City’s owner Tony Johnston and his team spent hours working on it and his wife Jo says she was delighted to see the back of it. “He did it in evenings and weekends and it took months and months to finish. It got to the point that we were just glad to see it gone. It was so much work for them all,” says Jo. The raffle for the car was won by a North Island man, who then sold it. Since it was raffled, the car has had a tough few years and been owned by five different people. In that time, it was raced, used in a car

rally and even had its roof jumped on, causing extensive damage. It then found its way back to Nelson and was bought by Jo. “When we were given the opportunity to buy it we jumped at it, because I really liked it,” she says. “I bought five tickets when it was raffled so I’m so happy to have it now.” The Mini wasn’t perfect when it came back to Nelson, meaning more work for Tony. “It needed quite a bit of tender loving care,” says Jo. “Which is really sad considering how much work went into it at the start. But Tony sees how much I really enjoy driving it so he doesn’t mind working on it. But he reckons he’s created a monster because now everything is just Minis – I love them.” Nelson Mini Club president Andy Wallace says she’s delighted to see the Mini back in town. “As a club we saw it advertised on TradeMe and thought ‘how could we bring it back to Nelson?’ So we’re really happy it’s back now and that it’s in such good hands.” The yellow Mini and its number plate “D4FDIL” has been getting plenty of feedback from around town, says Jo. “A lot of people comment on it. I love it and so do people who see it out and about.”

Richmond designer wins top WOW award Nelson artist Gillian Saunders is on top of the world after her outof-this-world design picked up the supreme award at this year’s World of WearableArt awards show in Wellington on Friday. Gillian’s Supernova beat 132 other garments to win the top award, 16 years after first entering a WOW garment. Gillian’s Brancott Estate Supreme award is on top of the David Jones Avant Garde Section she also won, seeing her take home two of the 20 top awards won this year by international designers from the UK, USA, China and New Zealand. Supernova is Gillian’s 16th garment entered to the WOW competition since 2000 and her ninth award. Her 2013 garment Inkling won the Weta: Creature Carnival Award and an internship for Gillian at the five-time Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop. Inkling was also selected for the touring WOW international exhibition. English-born Gillian’s background is in furnishing and textile design. She has been involved with theatre and televi-

sion for most of her working life, first in the UK, where she trained in Yorkshire, and then in Christchurch where she Gillian worked as a Saunders. props maker for the Court Theatre. “I had been making stage props for theatre and TV for years. WOW was the perfect challenge – could I make props for the body as well?” she says. Gillian’s workspace is filled with her book collections, piles of inspiration and her wearable art creations. Her inspiration often comes from books – a sentence or a word that triggers floods of ideas. For Supernova, she says she was inspired by a famous dress, a sea monster fin and images from space. “I was inspired by the texture and colours of Thierry Mugler’s Chimera dress and the iridescent spiny fins of the Hippocampus from the Percy Jackson movie The Sea of Monsters, and some incredible N.A.S.A images taken by the Hubble telescope,”

Gillian says. “Once all these elements were combined, Supernova was brought to life. The large gems represent new stars being born and the dark shadows represent deep space. Each scale has been individually cut, shaded with marker pens and then hand sewn onto the garment. Each gem has had its sticky backing removed and then glued on by hand.” Headed up by WOW founder Dame Suzie Moncreiff, the 2016 WOW Award Show judging panel included distinguished judges Zambesi fashion designer Elisabeth Findlay and sculptor Gregor Kregar. The judging process takes place over three months and involves viewing the garments three times; up close and on the stage in performance. At the awards ceremony, Dame Suzie emphasised the high calibre of the finalists in this year’s competition. “To win this international design competition is an incredible achievement,” she says. “Supernova has the design innovation, the construction quality and vibrant stage presence in performance to win WOW’s top award.”

Opinion

Your Voice Trafalgar Centre article 'misleading': Your article about the Trafalgar Centre on the front page of this week’s paper was very misleading. It implied that the failure of the column shown would have caused the collapse of the roof and that shows that the decision to close the building immediately was correct. The decision to close the building was based on a report that stated that the piles would sink into liquefied soil and that the liquefied soil would flow into saltwater creek and the Maitai River, causing the abutments to the arches to rotate and spread causing the roof to collapse. Subsequent investigation and testing showed that the first report was wrong and that the piles wouldn’t sink and that any liquefaction would not be significant. The strengthening work that has been done was necessary because the roof load and the seismic loads had increased significantly since the original design was done. However, as there was not likely to be a catastrophic collapse as implied by the first report, the building would have only needed to be closed while the strengthening work was being carried out. Salisbury Rd parking changes: Instead of completely banning them why can’t they be there in the weekends and leave it free during the week. Car yards must be complaining again. Philip Guard. You won’t stop them, they will just go somewhere else like Gladstone Rd which would be worse than Salisbury Rd. Terry Beach. How bout those ugly election boards and trailers with election advertising parked on the side of the road? Rayon Mackenzie. How to kill school kids cycling. Put in two-minute parking for pick-up and drop-off on the side of a busy cycle lane!! At least the for sale cars ensure people aren’t going to pull out and not look!! Michaela Kerr. I have never experienced any issues along that stretch of road, however just this morning at the be-

ginning of Rocks Rd right at the end of the merging lane after the traffic lights there was a group of councillors waving their billboard signs around distracting all the traffic. I saw a very close, almost rear-ender, that in my opinion, along with all the signs erected along Bishopdale Hill are more distracting in this election period than any cars for sale along Waimea Rd. Ally J Melse. What muppet came up with “new short-term parking spaces (2 minutes) outside Waimea College and Waimea Intermediate to make it easier for parents to drop-off and pickup their children without driving into the school grounds.” It’s much safer for everyone to use a proper drop off and pick up point that car parks on the road. Warwick Rogers. I find this hard to swallow when I got told it’s a distraction to driver on the road looking at cars for sale. But is okay to have a load of election billboards (that they want us to see) outside SPCA and other places where the speed limit it faster. Muppets! Matt Ayloff. Sheppard steals the stage at House Song Brittany Spencer Waimea College’s hall was filled with music, dancing, and a lot of colour at the annual House Song event on Friday. Sheppard stole the stage with their blue Olympic-themed performance, nabbing first place after a dead-heat in the judges decision with Cooper’s red scary clown circus. Sheppard’s performance had everything from a little dog to a human Olympic flame as

well as re-enactments of kiwi Olympic success and the Greek origins of the games. Third place went to the yellow Hillary cowboys and Rutherford rounded out the bottom with a green Viking theme. “It was the best time I’ve had at Waimea College,” says Sheppard house captain Josh Smolenski. “We won house song last year but winning it as house captains in our final year at Waimea just makes it mean so

much more, and seeing it all come together was unbelievable.” For new principal Scott Haines, this was his first taste of the Waimea College tradition. “It was magical, it brings together house spirit, we have something called the Waimea way which is all about looking after each other and a sense of community, and this is that in action.” For a video of the performances, got to nelsonlive.co.nz

I am locally educated and have lived most of my life in Richmond. I have seen our district grow dramatically especially in the last ten to fifteen years. As a local business owner and Managing Director of MediMax Ambulance Services for 18 years I have developed an extensive working network throughout the district and have a strong sense of what the people of Tasman want from their Council.

• I shall listen to what the people of Tasman want. • Local and rural communities must be included in decision making. • I am the only mayoral candidate that does not support the building of the Lee Valley Dam. • Core services must be prioritised. • Council spending must be reined in. We need to live within our means. • We must balance growth of our local industries with protecting our unique environment. In the 2016/17 Annual Plan, the current Council have approved a budget for the debt to rise to $166million of borrowing. The following year in Council’s Long Term Plan, including the dam project, debt will rise to a whopping $193million. This debt is out of control and will financially cripple all TDC ratepayers. Every $10million of debt translates to a 1% increase of rates for every ratepayer. The dam is too big and too expensive – alternative options such as weirs, reservoirs and domestic rainwater collection tanks must be fully investigated.

Rates will rise with the dam

The Tasman District Council and iwi representatives Frank Hippolite and Raewyn Solomon did a fantastic job of formulating a visionary and pragmatic management plan for Mutoroa-Rabbit Island. The plan was adopted by full council last week and featured some exciting developments, including a new mountainbike park, expansive native riparian plantings, more picnicking and recreation facilities and an extension to walking and biking trails. Rabbit Island is already one of the most pop-

ular and diverse recreational areas in the Tasman district and this plan will ensure that legacy is not only retained but also enhanced. All those people who felt passionate enough about Rabbit Island to make a submission to the plan also deserve credit. There were a number of disturbing recommendations in the draft plan that effectively prioritised commercial forestry over the recreational, ecological values and cultural values of the islands and these recommendations needed changing. It took some well-thought

out submissions to convince council that aspects of the draft were wide of the mark and credit must go to Sport Tasman and former PF Olsen manager Peter Wilkes for their key roles in the submissions process. Sport Tasman facilitated a united front among the sporting organisations that love and use Rabbit Island while Peter made it clear in his submission that restricting access because of health and safety

requirements was flawed. The final outcome was also victory for the public consultation process and shows that council is serious about listening to their ratepayers. And it drew a line in the sand for people in council who think that commercial interests should take precedence over all the other less tangible but often more important values. Of course it is important for council to balance the books, but not at all costs. The Mutoroa-Rabbit Island management plan makes this abundantly clear.

“We’re really passionate about helping reduce social isolation in the district and see this as a good starting point.” Richmond’s Pauline Stott, who attended the first four Tea and Talk’s, says it’s a great way to meet new friends. “I don’t have any trouble meeting people but a lot of elderly do, so something like this can be a life-line,” Pauline says. “I like coming because I really enjoy meeting new people.” Tea and Talk will be held at the Richmond Seniors Hall at 32 Oxford St every Wednesday from 10am to 11.30am. Entry costs $3 and morning tea will be provided.

to Age Concern on Oxford St is also a more suitable and central venue to host the get-togethers than Church on the Hill. Age Concern Nelson-Tasman manager Sue Tilby says she’s hopeful the initiative will be well supported as there’s a lack of opportunities to socialise for people over 65 living in Richmond. About 15 people have attended each of the first four Tea and Talks. “We will be organising entertainment and interesting speakers from time to time, but really the whole aim of it is to bring folk together and see what they’d like to get from it,” Sue says.

A new joint-initiative between Age Concern and Holy Trinity Church is giving senior citizens in and around Richmond a chance to get out-and-about and meet new people, all while enjoying a nice morning tea. Tea and Talk was launched by the two organisations, with support from Nelson Marlborough Primary Health and the Tasman District Council, on August 31. The new weekly get-together is aimed at getting people over 65 out of the house to meet new people and ensure they don’t become socially isolated. “The idea is to bring folk together in a friendly setting, with morning tea and occasional speakers and events throughout the year,” Trinity Church’s elder care team leader Yvonne Smyth says. “Everyone over the age of 65 is welcome to pop along and come see what we’re up to.” Yvonne says the church already runs a number of social programmes but joined forces with Age Concern for Tea and Talk because it gives the event “more of a community focus”. something pretty special and this is certainly special,” Heidi says. “Everyone in the school has done at least one painting and the senior students completed a portfolio of art - they have all done really nice work.” Heidi says the exhibition was displayed on professional mounting walls in the hall, or ‘The Shed Gallery’, complete with classical music playing in the background. She says many of the school’s parents were given a guided tour of the exhibition either by their own children or senior students rostered on as tour guides. The quality of the paintings even impressed one of the school’s more discerning crit-

ics, teacher and artist Greta Greenwood. “They have been inspired by these artists and that’s led them to create some amazing works,” Greta says. “It’s been great to be involved in something I love it’s been a such a success.” Pupils Awatea Roebuck-Danks and Charlie Bright say they created paintings inspired by Spanish artist Joan Miro and had fun painting the colourful and chaotic patterns that epitomise his work. “I liked it because he doesn’t want his paintings to look real,” Awatea says. “I think Miro is amazing.” The exhibition finished last Thursday.

Open 7 Days Mon-Sun 9.30am - 4.30pm Jessie Johnston The last time I stepped into The Suter Art Gallery I was one of many students on a primary school field trip, and as we made our way through the gallery we got to try a number of different art mediums. Even though I can’t recall much about what the gallery used to look like, I was amazed by its transformation when I walked through it recently. The third oldest art gallery in New Zealand, The Suter Art Gallery is a

memorial to the second Bishop of Nelson, Andrew Burn Suter, who travelled to Nelson in 1867. As well as leading the Anglican Diocese, he also busied himself with artistic pursuits as a recreational painter and collector of art. Having long wished to present an art gallery to the people of Nelson, it was after his death in 1895 that his wife, Amelia began realising her husbands dream. She gifted some land, money and Bishop Suter’s art collection as the founding donation and left the build-

ing of a gallery in the hands of the founding Board of Trustees, comprising leading figures in Nelson society. In 1899 the Bishop Suter Art Gallery, which was designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere, was opened, in 2007 it was designated as a Category II Heritage Building and now in 2016, after nearly two years of construction, the major redevelopment of the gallery has been completed. The project has considerably increased the size of the building which now encompasses brand new, modern facilities, constructed around the historical Suter Memorial Gallery. In fact, the building that stands there today is more of an art centre than a gallery, featuring an art library, the refurbished memorial gallery, a beautiful foyer/ communal space, a new education room for hands-on art activities, the refurbished performance theatre and an outdoor sculpture walk.

Open 7 Days Mon-Sun 9.30am - 4.30pm “The gallery owns our side of the pond which is always assumed to be part of Queens Gardens, and one of the lovely things about the redevelopment is that the gallery is more integrated with this fabulous setting,” says gallery director, Julie Catchpole. “With the sculpture garden, plantings and what was already here, it’s looking beautiful.” Nelson Suter Art Society also calls the centre home and within its walls they have their own gallery space and meeting room.

While the historic memorial gallery has been earthquake strengthened, the redevelopment also offered the opportunity to create a more functional building that was capable of hosting different exhibitions and artworks. As a result, The Suter Art Gallery now has the most up-to-date lighting available and a brand new heating and ventilation system. The project has been anything but simple, from the construction itself, to the work required by Suter staff and volunteers Locals attend the blessing of The Suter Art Gallery at the end of the redevelopment project.

to prepare the building. “It was a tricky process moving out for the rebuild as we had to move everything from the building down to Halifax St,” says Julie. “Absolutely everything had to be moved because so much of the gallery was demolished, and now we’ve also had to move everything back, and within that time we’ve added to our collection.” Plus, with the historical Albion

Square right beside the building and Queens Gardens on the other, not to mention The Suter Memorial Gallery itself, Julie says everyone has been “working around trying to be careful and respect all those heritage values and construct something that’s functional, beautiful and something that the city and the region is going to be proud of.” With the hard work nearly

Nelson woman: fighting to stay is ‘too hard’ A Nelson woman deported on Tuesday says Immigration New Zealand made it overwhelmingly hard for her to try to stay. Silke Larsen and her son have been forced to leave New Zealand despite 500 signatures and 33 letters proving their value to the Tasman region, and support from her MP. The Danish electrical scientist has a PhD in telecommunications but was volunteering and running a berry plant business with her partner. Silke says she felt she was hitting her head against a brick wall when trying to qualify to stay. “It’s like whenever you communicate with Immigration New Zealand, you start afresh. You start with a new person to connect with.” Silke says she is thankful for the community’s support but says it is ridiculous she couldn’t meet the department’s needs. “I’ve never had residency. I have applied for it and I have been declined because I don’t fit into the boxes – or we don’t fit into the boxes.

Silke Larsen has left New Zealand saying Immigration New Zealand made it "overwhelmingly hard" for her to stay. Photo: Twitter. “I haven’t found a way that we can apply.” She says there is little else she could have tried doing to remain here. “If there had been anything else I could think of I would have done it. “I’m good at acting and setting action on whatever needs to be done, but I haven’t been able to see a way through,” she says. It comes months after Im-

migration New Zealand were criticised for the way they handled the case of Nelson couple Steve and Gail Webster who were given a reprieve hours before they were due to be deported from the country. The Websters are continuing to fight against leaving the country after investing their life savings to move here. From the New Zealand Herald.

Just a thought... Peter Somervell Grace Church One of the benefits of living in a democracy is we get to enjoy a lot of freedoms. Take the New Zealand Bill of Rights for example - it’s a public document and you can look it up online. It spells out our civil rights very clearly. But for many in our society, when they hear the word freedom, they are not thinking freedom of speech and religion. They are thinking freedom from all moral restraints. Real freedom, they say, means doing whatever I want, whenever I want, without anyone stopping me. But we all know where that kind of freedom takes us don’t we. You are familiar, I’m sure, with the story of the Prodigal Son. He didn’t want moral re-

straints. He wanted to be free. So he demands his inheritance from his father and goes off to live a life of self-indulgence and gratification. But he soon realises it’s another form of slavery. Thomas Huxley, a famous atheist was right when he said, ‘a man’s worst difficulties begin when he is able to do as he likes.’ If we are to be truly liberated or truly free, that liberation must take place deep within. That’s where Jesus comes in. According to Jesus, there is a special kind of freedom that only he – the Son, can give us. In the bible Jesus speaks these most profound words ‘if you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ Charles Spurgeon, the famous

London preacher calls this text the ‘the great liberator.’ That’s who Jesus is – he is the great liberator. He frees from the things that bind and control us. He frees us from things that rob and destroy us. He frees us from irrational fears and phobias. He frees us from sinful habits. And most importantly, he frees us from sin’s consequences which is guilt and death. Do you also want to be free? Then recognise your true condition. Believe the wonderful message of Jesus – that he died and rose again for us, to set us free. Come to him. Put your trust in Him. Have him break the chains of sin give you true freedom. For if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.

Tasman District has experienced high population growth in recent years which has required significant ongoing development to the storm water system, sewerage reticulation, water supply and roading network. Richard Kempthorne is proud to have led council in delivering these essential services in a cost effective manner. These core services attract new people and businesses to the District and he would like to encourage more intensive residential development in order to reduce housing costs. Richard believes it is important to protect our productive land and ensure land and water is managed well to safeguard the environment for current and future generations. He has also enjoyed partnering with the community to provide sports facilities, community hubs and the Tasman Great Taste Trail. Over the last three years council has significantly reduced rates increases and this year the total rates increase was just under 1 per cent which Richard regards as a huge achievement. This has been assisted by council’s commercial activities which he fully supports as these provide a net profit which helps reduce rates. Council has also achieved a significant reduction in debt. The current debt is $44 million less than the $173 million forecast in the 2015/2016 Annual Plan. Both low rates increases and reduced debt require tight budget control and constrained capital spending and Richard is committed to this ongoing prudent financial management. The community needs a lean but adequately staffed, well-motivated council team and in recent years, staff numbers have increased which has given great outcomes. The Engineering Department has had the largest increase in numbers but it has led to $1.4 million annual savings and better connections between council engineers and community. A sustainable, adequate water supply for Waimea Basin is also a focus for Richard and is a crucial issue for the whole district. Before proceeding with the Waimea Dam he believes council must establish a fair funding model and a tender price before further consultation with the community, later next year. Richard greatly enjoys leading Tasman District Council and the community and if re-elected, will continue to be an effective and dedicated Mayor. “We are on the right track and I would appreciate your support to continue as Mayor of our wonderful community.”

Born in British Columbia, Canada, Kit Maling immigrated with his family to New Zealand when he was ten years old, settling in Richmond in 1963. He attended local schools, including Waimea College, his first job being as an apprentice golf professional. Kit joined the New Zealand Police as a 20 year old and served in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington throughout his 24 year career. His last posting was at the Royal New Zealand Police College as officer in charge of advanced training. At the age of 45, Kit took early retirement to be close to his elderly father, Rob, who many may know as the mayor of Richmond in the 1980s. Kit purchased an orchard block on the Waimea Plains and after seven years leased the land while he worked as a production manager at Hoddy’s Orchard. He worked there until he was elected to the Tasman District Council in 2010, as well as spending two days a week working for the Community Probation Service. In 2013 Kit stood unsuccessfully for mayor of Tasman and since then has managed the Waimea Village on a part time basis, helping to resolve the long running dispute between the residents and owners. He has also worked part time for an insurance broking firm called Preferred New Zealand. Kit has been active in the community throughout his life, as a school board of trustees member, a rugby coach, administrator and manager and active in cricket as well as both coach and administrator. He has been married to Leanne for 35 years and they have three children, two who live locally and one who resides in Auckland. Being a keen outdoorsman, Kit enjoys hunting and trout and sea fishing when time permits. With a background in policing and orcharding, as well as his experience as a councilor, Kit believes he can offer much needed direction and accountability to council. If elected, he will lead a council focused on delivering core services for ratepayers. He also believes that the 86 additional staff employed by the current council in the last nine years is not sustainable, nor does he support council getting involved in commercial property development. Rates affordability, managing sustainable growth, protecting local jobs, affordable housing and looking after our environment are all key prioritise for Kit as a resident and a leader in the district. Kit aims to lead an enabling, positive and customer friendly council that delivers excellent service to its ratepayers.

2016 LOCAL ELECTIONS TASmAN dISTrICT COUNCIL CANdIdATES

Maxwell Clark has been the Managing Director of MediMax Ambulance Service for the last 18 years and has long worked in the caring profession as an Intensive Care Paramedic and a Registered Nurse. He’s also a family man and Richmond resident with a clear understanding of local and rural matters. After nine years, Maxwell believes it is time for a new mayor to take Tasman forward. As mayor, Maxwell promises to listen to the voices of the community, provide strong leadership and financial acumen. He will ensure that TDC gives priority to living within its means and as the only mayoral candidate who does not support the Lee Valley Dam, will see a review of the unaffordable $82 plus million project. In its place, Maxwell hopes to adopt a water conservation policy with household rainwater collection tanks and resevoirs and weirs. He will also work to ensure absolute transparency in council processes, investigate rezoning for more affordable housing, encourage gender and cultural balance in the council and hopes to put an end to the continued commercial and legal disputes that have arisen in recent years. It’s time to ‘Refresh Tasman’ so that we can all benefit from and enjoy the outstanding natural resources in our district. Dana Wensley brings a fresh, constructive voice to council. Born and raised in Motueka, Dana works, lives, volunteers and raises her family in Richmond. When it comes to local politics, Dana brings a strong background in law and policy, with a law degree from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Medical Law and Ethics from King’s College in London. Dana has a significant track record in governance and board experience, serving on the Hospital Advisory Committee (NMDHB) where she advocates for families, the aging population and their carers. She has also been appointed by the Minister of Health to the National Ethics Advisory Committee (expertise law). Dana is passionate about mending the relationship between council and the public after witnessing an “alarming disconnect with the community.” Rapid growth is a primary concern for Tasman requiring creative, connected thinking that supports infrastructure, core services, and an age-friendly community. Dana is a hard worker, good listener, and will advocate for you to build a better future. She does not support the current funding model for the dam and would seek alternative options that do not impose unrealistic burdens on rate payers. Find out more at tasmanissues.net. There are many issues facing council that are in real need of new thinking. Among these are rates, water, the Lee Valley Dam, housing, governance and efficiencies. Rate rises have been excessive and Murray Dawson believes the only way rates can be brought in line with inflation is to reduce expenditure. Is every rate dollar delivering value for money? Water allocations are complex and lead to inefficiencies which is why Murray would like to see a fairer and simpler set of rules to benefit everyone. The dam is hugely expensive and it is not needed by urban users as this supply is secure for decades. Irrigation use is decreasing, due in part to conversion to low demand crops like grapes. Housing demand is increasing and the need to encourage urban renewal. Murray would like to see the area building up, more than out, which will reduce urban demand on rural land. Governance and directorship is the main role of a councillor and Murray believes councillors should take more control of the agenda. Efficiencies in administration should be confirmed by an external review. A review is overdue. Murray will commit himself to these issues and hopes to receive your vote to achieve change. With extensive management and governance experience behind him, Wayne Mackey is seeking your vote in the upcoming Richmond Ward Elections. For the past 18 years Wayne has been the chief executive of Network Tasman Limited, a position that has given him the right skills to be an effective member of council. He will be retiring from Network Tasman on September 30 which, under his stewardship, has demonstrated a track record of financial prudence, cost containment and sound management. Thanks to Wayne’s years in senior management and governance, he will also bring common sense, independent thinking to the challenges facing council, which include the growth of the region, cost and debt control and the need for water augmentation. Wayne also gives his support to greater cooperation between local bodies and options for shared services, where this makes sense, to lower cost and increase the level and quality of services to Tasman ratepayers. If your concerns for the future of the Tasman region are in line Wayne’s, make sure you support him. Outside of work life, Wayne has lived in Richmond for 38 years and he and his wife Karen have two adult children.

With a solid understanding of the issues that Tasman District Council faces, Michael Higgins believes he has the ability to help move the district forward. His objective is to work with all elected councillors towards good decisions with good outcomes for Richmond and the Tasman district. Michael has achieved qualification to sit on Resource Management Plan and resource Consent Hearings. Affordable and good quality living has always been important and Michael will continue to work towards keeping rates and costs down for the community. He also believes that the critical issue of water availability is something that needs to be resolved, the cost to the irrigators and the community as a whole being a major concern. Michael says there are real options available that he would like to pursue, should the Lee Valley Dam not proceed. Outside of council, Michael says the development of the Pigeon Valley steam museum has been an ongoing source of satisfaction. Having raised four children, Michael and his wife Jan now enjoy regular family gatherings encompassing three generations. His family business centres on plantation forestry, growing and harvesting the forest. Forest work is a good balance for his involvement on the TDC.

Trevor Tuffnell has been an active member of the Tasman community since his appointment to the Richmond Borough Council at the age of 24. He is once again seeking election as he has the time, the drive and the dedication to help provide a sustainable future for Richmond. Trevor’s comprehensive experience in community matters include current roles as deputy chair of Network Tasman Trust, trustee of Nelson-Tasman Business Trust, member of Tasman Environmental Trust and chair of Waimea Village Ltd. As well as an affordable water supply, Trevor believes council needs to review the footprint of Richmond to stop the continual encroachment into productive land. A greater awareness of the need to safeguard our environment is also an important issue for Trevor, as is the need to support volunteer groups that are restoring our waterways and wetlands. Trevor’s time in business included managing Tuffnell Plumbing, founding and managing a hire company, as well as being project manager for a national company undertaking new building developments. Trevor offers a wealth of knowhow, local body and commercial experience and a passion for the area, which he hopes to use to help ensure affordable and sustainable growth.

With a background in education, Dennis Gibbs has been principal at schools in Westland, the central North Island and Wellington, finishing his direct involvement in teaching as deputy principal at Waimea Intermediate. From there Dennis became an education review officer based in Wellington and Nelson and is now a part time educational consultant. Dennis believes he can bring considerable management experience to council, as well as a good understanding of how local communities work, sound communication, listening and strategic planning skills and organisational skills. Dennis’ immediate goals for the Tasman district include sustainable, safe water supplies, well managed urban and rural growth, equitable and affordable rates charges, debt repayment and recognising, promoting and valuing clubs and social groups. He is committed to adhering to process, open and transparent management and being available to listen to the community. Dennis believes in informed decision making and a fair deal for all, prioritised council spending and keeping costs down while providing affordable services and infrastructure. With the time and energy to devote to council, Dennis knows he can make a difference. Graeme Stradling has lived in the district for over thirty five years and is passionate about working with and supporting his community. Communities are the key to the wider success of the district and Graeme believes everyone must be part of empowered, resilient communities for good times and bad. He would aim to establish ‘sustainability’ as an action report and review subject alongside the Long Term Planning process. This would enable council to engage and to set real goals to meet future challenges. Dam or weirs? Unfortunately the balance of water options has not been properly addressed and Lee Valley dam has become politicised. It carries with it, as well as the blinkered thinking, the expensive consequences of any further mistakes in procedure and the very real risk of litigation. Graeme believes council needed to responsibly review the alternative options and show better leadership. He would lobby for real changes to how council runs itself. Better directed staff, firmer governance, more community control and greater accountability are all issues Graeme would like to see addressed. Elect an ambitious and responsive council that is straight up with the public and smart in its thinking. Vote Graeme Stradling for better community voices on TDC.

the group is hoping to not only continue their support of the service, but also aid the marine search and rescue team in getting a defibrillator. “We leave the rally open to everybody, you can turn up on a push bike with a motor on it, or not if you can pedal fast enough because the rescue helicopter doesn’t discriminate,” says Top

New Show H On the Brightside

Hello Everyone, Many of you will have seen the AED (automatic external defibrillator) now attached to the wall outside the Brightwater 4 Square. The Brightwater Community Association can take no credit for this gift. While we were negotiating to obtain one I was informed that James Carter of A1 Concrete Pumping Limited had donated the AED on his own initiative. It is really pleasing to see a company identify a need than say “What can I do to help?” Thank you A1 Concrete Pumping Limited To make things even more pleasing we have been ap-

proached by a national Company and a local trust enquiring whether we required funding for an AED, so the goodwill is out there. Thanks must go to TDC who have increased their funding to the Community Association to cover the increasing day to day costs of the Association. Marty Price of Neighbourhood Support spoke at our last meeting about the role of his organisation, both as a community support organisation and a means of disseminating and collecting information on anti-social behaviour in our area. Interested? The contact is nsup-

port.waimea@outlook.com Much of the crime in our area is opportunistic. Do not leave bikes out on the front lawn, cars unlocked, valuable items on display inside your car. You can help yourself by following the basic rules on protecting your property Following the accident on 15 September involving a truck and an elderly man, Facebook has been full of comments from people wanting change to truck movements within our township. The Community Association has pressed on this problem for years and currently TDC, Brightwater School and trucking companies

are endeavouring to come to a workable compromise. Come long to the next meeting on Oct 3rd at 7.30pm at the Brightwater School staff room and have your say. It should be a good meeting as we have Mat Arnold-Kelly, Nelson Bays Police Area Commander, and a representative from Network Tasman to address concerns that we have raised with them, and with the current level of concern over trucking movements, I foresee a lively meeting. Regards Pat Lithgow, Chairperson, Brightwater Community Association

Brightwater School’s art week was an opportunity for students to learn about different art mediums thanks to a number of local resources. Local artists gave demonstrations in the mornings, all classes paid the WOW museum a visit and during lunchtimes students performed in bands, acted in plays, danced and sang for

other students to watch. In the afternoons the school had 23 different art activities for the students to practice art related activities. Parents and grandparents also helped out with the activities and the demonstrations. It was great having a week dedicated to art so students could get a more in-depth appreciation of this

Taylors Wanderers Sports Club Cricket Season 2016-2017 Preparation for the upcoming cricket season is well underway, even if the cricket block is still a muddy rugby paddock. This will change completely when the grounds staff gets some favourable weather to start the conversion from winter to summer sports. The Nelson Cricket Association has put a plan in place ‘Club Hub’ for the best practice for cricket in Nelson. All Clubs in the Association have bought into this plan for the future of Cricket. The Cricket season starts on October 8 for the seniors and October 29 for the 2nd grade. We are looking for any interested players to join the Club in either grade. Primary and Intermediate Cricket starts on October 29, as well as Kiwi and Incrediball. For further junior cricket information,

contact Diane 5423344. And of course we need coaches and team managers to go with the teams. A manager is a valuable part of the team and lets the coach do the coaching, while they will organise all aspects to run the team. If you would like to support a team in this way please contact the Club for more detail. We would also like to get an indication from girls and women who are interested in playing cricket. Nelson Cricket is to promote and develop cricket in the region to cater for these players. We will have the services of an overseas player/coach for coaching of the seniors and helping with trainings for juniors. He will also be going into the schools in our area to promote interest and deliver skills for play- Hayden Ingham heading into the one day finals at Saxton Oval for the victorious Wanderers team. ers.

Wakefield Bowling Club There has been a longstanding annual challenge match between the previous Brightwater Bowling Club and Ngawahatu Bowling Club with a Cup being donated by Nelson businessman Arthur Gould in 1946. Since the Brightwater Club closed in the early 2000s the challenge has been played between Wakefield and Ngawhatu Clubs. In this year’s games, Wakefield retained the Cup. Two previous Brightwater Club players, Helen Griffen and Graham Burrows, were in the Wakefield team along with other Brightwater residents Jon van der Laan, Harry Beckers and Peter and Linda Sisterson.

Summer season at Wakefield is about to start, and new players are welcome to head along to the following sessions, or at any other time. Opening Day will be held on Saturday 24 Sept at 1pm and the popular Have a Go Day will be on Sunday 9 October 2 - 4pm. Through the summer there will be social roll ups on Monday and Friday, social evenings from 4pm Fridays, Club Championships, Tournaments, Interclub and Nelson Centre events. Please feel welcome to come along at anytime, 61 Whitby Road, Wakefield. For more detail phone Peter on 5422216 or Tony on 5418316.

St Paul’s Anglican Church

As we look forward, we have been evaluating what we are doing and what potentially we could be doing for the local community Identifying five key values that make us who we are: Community: Caring for the needs of others while journeying together in faith. Prayer: Communicating with God. Sharing: Actively sharing the good news about Christ in word and deed. Worship: Attributing worth to God and being Christ centred and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Bible Knowledge: Teaching and learning about the scriptures in a way which is well thought out and relevant to our lives. All of this can be summed up in a mission statement, “Coming together in the worship of God as a community to receive God’s love, to pray, to learn and to share the love of God.”

NEW LOCATION Jim and Jannine Richards of Glassworx Nelson Ltd have always focused on providing their clients with a high quality service and that personal touch, unique to small local businesses. Now settled in their brand new, purpose built building off Lower Queen Street, Jim, Jannine and the team are even better placed to meet people’s home and automotive glass requirements. Having owned Glassworx Nelson for nearly 10 years and operating it out of their home in Brightwater, they decided it was time to branch

out and construct a premises that would allow them the space and resources to develop the business further. From their home they were also unable to offer clients a showroom experience, however the new Glassworx Nelson building has been designed with that exact purpose in mind and encompasses examples of a shower, splashbacks, mirrors and a range of cat and dog doors that can be installed into homes. Now visible as you drive down Lower Queen Street, their new building and location is giving them

fantastic exposure that was not possible before. While Jannine works behind the scenes running the administration side of the business, Jim has 25 years of experience in the glazing industry which he puts to good use in the workshop and off site. Helping him is fellow experienced glazier, Jon Taikato and Daniel Richards who has recently joined the team as an apprentice. Jim and Jannine are also looking to find another reliable and skilled glazier to come on board and welcome any enquiries.

Jim says Glassworx Nelson’s point of difference is simplicity. “It’s not going to be a long winded process, we’re a team who can get the job done and we’re proud of our quick turnaround.” Unlike larger company’s this is a locally owned business and when you call Glassworx Nelson to discuss your needs, you’ll most likely be talking with Jim, the man with all the answers. That means your enquiry is responded to with accurate information and instead of waiting three or four weeks to receive service, the

Glassworx Nelson team will get started straightaway. While glass repairs and replacements for your car or home may require Glassworx Nelson’s mobile service, their new premises is perfect for accommodating client consultations. When it comes to a new shower, splashbacks, table tops or mirrors, Jim and Jannine welcome people to sit down in their showroom and discuss the different options available while getting to see examples firsthand. When looking around for the perfect place to relocate to, Jim and Jannine decided they wanted to build new as finding a space big enough to accommodate their business wasn’t easy. The Lower Queen St industrial park hit the mark, being close to Richmond yet avoiding the huge traffic flow experienced in areas such as Gladstone Rd. With the team often returning to reload the truck before heading out to the next client, easy access was essential and there is plenty of parking for their clients too.

Susie wins fifth Spring Challenge New team-mates on a new course did not bother Richmond’s Susie Wood who won her fifth nine-hour Torpedo 7 Spring Challenge women’s adventure race at Golden Bay over the weekend. Susie teamed up with fellow Nelsonians Eloise Fry and Anja McDonald to complete the race in 8 hours 50 minutes and 36 seconds. They won by 54 seconds. More than 450 teams took part in the event which has a mix of rafting, hiking, mountain biking and running, as well as three, six and nine hour race options. Susie says she was thrilled to win again with a new team after previously winning the event in Wanaka, Tapawera, St Arnaurd and Hokitika. “I thought the course was fantastic this year and the rafting was a lot of fun plus there were a lot of navigation points that you had to work

Tony Frost set to race with his son It’s been 15 years since Nelson stock car driver Tony Frost last drove competitively on the race track. The former Nelson Tiger and two-time New Zealand modified champion is back behind the wheel this season at Nelson Speedway. He had a wee peddle last year but that was purely for fun. The plan this year was to get a second car built so he could have a couple of seasons racing with his son Brad. Brad raced the car last year and was part of the successful Tasman Thunder team that

finished second at the New Zealand Stock Car Series. Tony, who spends many months away in China for work, felt that the opportunity to race with his son was starting to disappear. Last year, the whole family travelled to the North Island for Brad to race for the New Zealand title plus a few other events. The trip meant a lot to Tony, not just for the family time, but he felt Brad learnt a lot about racing. Brad, 18, is a promising engineer, he has a stock car half-built in the shed, but a nasty infection has put a stop to his racing for the near future.

For the first time in 14 years, Nelson will have an under-18 girl’s indoor cricket team competing at the nationals, which got underway in Wellington this week. Nelson has not sent a team since 2002 but with a good group of teenage girls keen to play the sport, the decision was made to send them to nationals. Team manager Peter Bone says it is an excellent time for

women’s cricket in Nelson and this is one of the results of it. “It’s been a way to keep their hand in over winter and in recent times there hasn’t been a girls’ grade, the girls have had to play with the boys. “This year, they have offered us the under-18 girl’s grade so we thought we’d give it a go.” The team has five players from Nelson College for Girls, one from Girls’ Prep and two from Garin College. “There’s no experience to base any expectations, it’s a trip into

Kaye Surgenor has arrived in Nelson to take over the head coaching role of the male crews at the Nelson Rowing Club, and she has her sons to thank for it. The former Queen Charlotte College and Canterbury rower started her new role last week, a decade after her two sons Robbie and Karl Manson decided to try the sport at Marlborough Boys’ College. The duo have both rowed for New Zealand at the Olympics, but it was their foray into the sport that gave Kaye a chance to follow her dream. “Robbie hated rowing and was

more into his horse riding, but when Karl had been rowing for two months. he decided to give it a go and told me he was going to sell his horse and buy a single [scull-boat], which he did. “I got roped into coaching Karl’s crew because he had no coach but I’d always wanted to coach.” Kaye left St Margaret’s College after three years, to take this job. She has also coached a South Island Under-18 crew and a New Zealand Under-21 men’s sweep crew against the Australians in a trans-Tasman series. Kaye says a head coaching role at Nelson was one she wanted. “There’s a lot of potential here and Nelson has always been a really

successful club with good support around the club which appeals to me. The main goals will be to get club crews ready for the national championships and high school rowers ready for the Maadi Cup in early 2017. Kaye hopes she will become an elite coach for Rowing New Zealand and saw her coaching in Nelson to be a long-term venture. “I always wanted to coach but when I retired I was busy being a pony club mother and carting kids around the countryside and I didn’t get to have the opportunity that is in front of me for this season and to build on what I know as a coach.

Silverware and a debut for Labu Pan Jacob Page What a week it has been for Nelson College football captain Labu Pan. He scored a goal to help his team win the Price Charity Cup final against Marlborough Mariners last Wednesday and just four days later he started Tasman United's first-ever game. Labu says playing the Wellington Phoenix Premier Reserves was the biggest challenge of his footballing life so far - for the record Wellington won the contest 1-0. Labu played the opening 45 minutes before a head knock in a challenge for an aerial ball on the eve of halftime, saw him replaced. "That was a big step up to what I'm used to. They (Wellington) were

so fast and skilful on the ball. "I enjoyed it, but my legs were sore after the game on Wednesday.” Tasman United got better as the match went on, creating more chances in front of goal in the second half. "I was nervous before the game but playing in front of a good home crowd helped us settle down.” Labu says he's keen to make the most of every opportunity he gets, even though coach Richard Anderson used a number of youth players alongside frontline players in the match, like club captain Mark Johnston, marquee signing Paul Ifill and goal keeper Coey Turipa. "Being around experienced guys will only help my game improve.

S V H

“It's a good opportunity for me to improve each day and to learn from the knowledge those guys have.” Richard says it was a promising start after some initial nerves in the first half most likely cost his team the game. Tasman United will continue their preparation for next month’s National League campaign with a game against a Richmond XI this weekend. In the main match at Trafalgar Park, the Wellington Phoenix beat the Central Coast Mariners 2-1 in a preseason A-League fixture.’ Wellington Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick praised the Trafalgar Park surface in a post-match interview and says he is keen for his team to return in the near future.

U13 REpREsEnTATivE TEAMs The Nelson Under-13 boys A and B basketball teams will travel to Christchurch next week to face the best South Island teams in their age-group. The tournament runs from October 5th to the 8th at Pioneer Stadium and Cowles Stadium. Former Nelson Giants veteran, Phill Jones, will take charge of the A team while Jeremy Newton will take the B’s. With 41 players trialling to make the initial squad, Phill was pleased

to have two teams from Nelson compete at the tournament. “We had players of all skill levels trialling, some who have literally just picked up the sport while others have been playing it for a while.” Phill says, while the 2015 team finished winning the same tournament, he wanted his players to get to grips with the basics. “When I started it was repetition that helped get me to improve my skills. I only get these boys two days a week so there is an im-

some of the core skills of the game. If I can get the kids to embrace some of those things, then there’s no reason they can’t be in the top team in future years.” Jeremy says it is an exciting opportunity for his players to get used to playing a good standard of the game but he was unsure what to expect from opposition teams. “I expect the team to do well, and the team is proof that we have some talented young players coming through.”

Ryan Chisnall saves best for last Jacob Page Sports Editor

Greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall’s Eisenhower Trophy debut in Mexico may not have panned out the way he wanted but he did get the last laugh. The 22-year-old golfer had rounds of 75, 74 and 75 in the opening three rounds before he came good in the last round to card a three under 68 which helped his team to a tie for sixth overall in the international teams event. The New Zealand team of Ryan, Luke Toomey and Nick Voke stormed into sixth after being tied for 29th after the first day’s play. Ryan says he has loved the experience but was frustrated by his early round

efforts. “I was extremely disappointed with the way I performed the first three days but to get up when the boys needed me on the last day was pleasing.” Australia won the event by 19 shots, but Ryan says he had some cherished memories he would take home with him. “The week has been an awesome opportunity and a lot of fun. “To represent your country on a stage like this is something I will never forget.” His opening shot for the week was a particular highlight. “To get the chance to hit the first shot for the team in the first round, with which I hit a five iron to within a foot (of the hole), will be something I remember forever.”
