Hunters focus on safety More hunters are joining local clubs in an effort to stay safe says the president of a deer stalkers club. Morgan Rogers, of the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association, says his club has more than 500 members, making it the second biggest in the country and it has seen a 25 per cent rise in the numbers in the past two years. Membership has spiked on the back of several hunting accidents throughout the country and Morgan says more hunters are safety conscious and wanting to learn how to hunt safely. “There’s definitely been an increase [of members] and people wanting to know what to wear, what not to wear, what to take, how to improve their technique, all that kind of thing,” he says. Since 2002, there have been
15 hunting deaths in New Zealand, the latest just last month in the North Island. Morgan says every death rocks the hunting community and as a result hunters are keen to make sure there isn’t another one. Tasman Police figures show the number of new gun licences issued has remained steady, with around 700 new licences being issued each year. So far this year 418 new licences have been issued in the Tasman policing district, which runs from Haast to Kaikoura and north, with a further 255 renewed. That’s similar to last year’s figure which showed 517 new licences and 245 renewals. In total, the Tasman district has around 18,000 people with a firearms licence, one of the SEE PAGE 2

Sun shines on A&P Show Sinead Ogilvie
Stunning sunshine helped the Nelson A&P Show buck a trend of dwindling numbers over the weekend. Over the two days the crowds were treated to a range of attractions from show jumping, wood chopping, highland dancing, baby animals, and a variety of carnival stalls. The two days of sunny summer weather was a huge part of its success says show coordinator Annette Robinson and she is extremely happy with how the weekend went. “It was the first time in five years we have had two days of sunny weather for the show, and we are more than pleased with how it went.” A line of people stretched from the ferris wheel in the carnival area where the Round Up ride was proving a popular feature with operator Brad Sturgeon saying around 1000 people would have a go on the ride over the weekend. “It’s the thrill of it. The kids like to get up there and have a scream.” He says there were more things to see and do this year, and that there was a good crowd. The wide ranging entertainment was a highlight this year says Annette, including the last ever performance of local Nelson band The Peasants before they disband. The animal nursery, terrier racing, horses and wood chopping were all popular and Annette says being up Friends Toma Noguchi, 15, Brad Crocker, 15, Sanne van Ginkel, 16, Si- close and personal with animals is mon Brinsley, 16, and Matt Hampson, 16, enjoying the A&P Show on an opportunity most people don’t get every day. Courtesy crossings will not be changed Richmond’s main street courtesy crossings will remain in place for the foreseeable future even after a school student was hit by a car crossing one earlier this year. Tasman District Council say the courtesy crossings have been proven as the safest form of crossing. However, this does not negate the need for care to be taken by pedestrians and drivers alike. “During the recent debate sparked by the recent accident in Richmond a number of opinions were publicised, both for and against”, says engineering chairman Trevor Norriss. “What we were concerned with was ensuring we had the facts on which to base any decision about their
future. We have seen these, balanced them with the public comment and still only been able to come to one conclusion – courtesy crossings are the safest form of crossing bar tunnels and over bridges.” Trevor says the recent accident was the only one reported since 2003. “When compared to pedestrian crossings or light controlled crossings the difference is 10-fold in favour of the raised crossings.” A discussion regarding the possible addition of simple signage reminding users of their responsibilities has been deferred until the next meeting.

Seal found in Richmond A young fur seal was discovered resting on a rock in Richmond’s Beach Rd on Monday. It was initially found by an employee from Fletcher EasySteel who says the young seal had just been resting on a rock in the creek, and that its discovering had “given them some excitement” around the workplace. The Fletcher EasySteel employee no-
tified the Department of Conservation right away. However, they say if the seal is left alone and was close to water then it would not be in any danger or pose any risks to the public. DOC spokesperson Bruce Vander Lee was in Nelson yesterday to check on the seal and says it is not unusual for seals to wander at this time of the year. “They tend to wander and
explore, go up creeks and the other weekend there were seals up the Appleby,” he says. “We’re not surprised and we take frequent calls at this time of the year.” Bruce says there is higher priority if the seal has moved away from the water and that seals are only relocated if there are some potential risks to its or others’ safety.

Tensions still run high in Village Tensions in Waimea Village are rising with the latest residents’ committee newsletter reporting owner Michael Wright confronted an 80 year old female resident. The woman did not want her name released as she fears “a rock through her window” but did talk to Waimea Weekly. She says she was hanging her washing last week when Michael told her that if she didn’t pay the increase awarded by an arbitrator, and a back pay of $635, then he would force her out of her house. She says he was screaming and very angry. Village owner Michael Wright would not discuss details of the incident, twice re-
peating the statement: “That was a private conversation between myself and a resident that has been inaccurately portrayed by the writer [of the newsletter].” It came just days after the residents decided to set up a “war chest” to fight the Wrights in court over various levy issues and declared they would not pay this year’s levy increase. Residents own their own homes and pay normal council rates and other bills but don’t own the land. Instead they pay a monthly levy which covers the maintenance of the common area, disposal of green waste and certain
management services. The fees have been raised twice since 2010, from $80 to $125 last year and then to $182.75 this year, both times by an arbitrator after the residents fought the iniMichael Wright. tial increases proposed by the Wright’s. This year the proposal was for $284 per month. Michael has stated he will go back to an arbitrator year after year until he gets the amount he wants.
The incident involving the elderly lady, was reported in the newsletter of the residents committee last week. Chairman of the committee, Jerry Rowland, says the incident has had a “big impact” in the village. An account for the residents has been set up at ASB Bank and is called “Waimea Residents War Chest” and will be for legal costs. The account number for donations is 12 3158 0157343 00 or people can contact any member of the residents committee. Jerry says the support of the residents’ garage sale fundraiser at Waimea Village on Saturday was “overwhelming”.

Is this NZ’s tallest Christmas tree? Washbourn Gardens is home to the country’s tallest Christmas tree, according to Richmond Unlimited, who have gone about claiming the unofficial record. The sequoia sempervirens, or coastal redwood, tree stands at approximately 42 metres tall, making it 17m higher than the 25m tall Christmas tree at Tahunanui Beach. Tasman District Council have lit up the tree at Christmas time since 2003 because of its prominence and the fact it can be seen all across Richmond. The council believes the tree was planted in approximately 1924. “Many of the trees planted there by the owner Dr Washbourn were in lieu of payment by patients to Dr Washbourn and this one may have been one of those,” says TDC communications manager Chris Choat. The “tallest Christmas tree in New Zealand” will be lit up again from December 14.

Police target drivers using cellphones Nelson drivers can expect extra attention around cellphone enforcement as it appears that they are not getting the message. Tasman Police is taking part in a nation-wide blitz for the remainder of the month, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the introduction of legislation banning mobile phone use while driving and to remind drivers of the risks associated with distraction while driving. Tasman Police issued 311 infringement notices for drivers using cellphones during the past year – with 197 of them coming from the Nelson Bays area. That number was higher than the 2010/11 fiscal year when police issued 294 infringements for cellphone use with just 146 Police are preparing for of them coming from the a blitz on drivers using Nelson Bays area. their cellphones. Tasman District roading manager Inspector Jenni Richardson says there are no excuses for people still failing to comply with this legislation “several years down the track”. Jenni says Nelson drivers can expect extra attention around cellphone enforcement as it appears that they are not getting the message. Although the legislation allows the use of hands-free mobile phones, police still recommend that drivers minimize the potential for distraction by switching phones off while driving or at least pulling over to the side of the road to make or receive calls. The fine for driving while using a cell phone is $80, and 20 demerit points.

Scholarship keeps cyclist on track Cameron Ford hopes a $1000 scholarship can keep him on track to reaching his next goal of qualifying for the World Junior Track Championship. The Year 11 Waimea College track cyclist received the McGlashen Pharmacy Scholarship given to one talented local teenager to help push them forward in their respective career. Cameron, who accepted the $1000 cheque just one day before flying off to Adelaide for the Oceania Track Championships with the national Under-19 team, says it’s tough being a track cyclist in Nelson, especially due to the fact there is no velodrome – yet. “You can’t really train here, it’s all on the road. You go from a 520m track at Trafalgar Park to a 250m track with three times as much banking,” he says, comparing his current situation to what Adelaide has in store. “There’s a velodrome in Invercargill that we do track camps at but that’s only four times a year. I think if I lived anywhere else in the country I’d be doing a lot more track cycling.” Cameron says being selected in the national Under-19 team was his highlight to date. However, he was hoping to go one better next year and make selection for the World Junior Track Championship. He is aiming for a podium finish in the 1000m time trial in Adelaide McGlashen Pharmacy owner Andrew McGlashen hands a $1000 and results like that would surely help his cause for scholarship to Cameron Ford. Brewers win gold with new hobby

The room smells of hops and a pot of boiling liquid that will one day be beer is sitting on the floor. Gareth says the brewing started – appropriately – with a beer. “We thought it would be fun and were getting sick of paying big money for the slop that the big breweries give us,” he says. They started, along with another friend, by using the home brew kits but say a distinct “home brew taste” kept coming through and when their other brewer left the region they had to make a call on whether to keep going. “You know how you can make a cake from scratch using flour, sugar and eggs etc or you can go and buy a box and add milk? Well we were doing that. We decided if we were going to carry on we needed to do it properly,” says Matthew. Other local brewers Adam Tristram, Dale Holland and Andy Selwood came in to help the pair out. “Adam and Dale came and spent six hours here and showed us how to do it. We were pretty clueless. They said do this, do that and we were asking why, that really gave us a good start. All the guys are really good, letting us borrow their equipment and giving us tips,” says Matthew. They say the hobby isn’t cheap, with the outlay for brewing equipment somewhat expensive but once you’re up and running the beer is cheap, about a dollar for one 750ml bottle. They say more and more people are getting involved and the community is very supportive. But the best part of their hobby isn’t hard to pick, they say they love drinking their own beer and it appears the judges do too.
Two weeks ago local brewers Matthew Hoddy and Gareth Kerr won a gold medal for their pilsner at the Nelson Homebrew Competition. We wanted to learn more, so last Friday editor Andrew Board visited their brewing shed in Hope. It takes just a glimpse to see this isn’t the kind of set up I remembered from my dad’s homebrew days. Probably a good thing as my recollections of his kit-set drink was that it wasn’t that popular, even with the brewer. Matthew Hoddy and Gareth Kerr are school mates from Waimea College. They both left Nelson to attend university and travel and now they’re home and find brewing a meaningful hobby that tests not only their brains, but their taste buds. The pair is now into their thirties and now proudly call themselves brewers. Visiting their purpose-built brewing shed in Hope it’s pretty obvious they take it seriously. Friends built the 3x2 metre room from coolstore panels at the back of Matthew’s brother’s house. It holds a second hand kitchen bench and sink, an oil fin heater with a dodgy thermostat, bags of malt, hops and other ingredients, empty crates of beer bottles, a capping machine, big plastic barrels that house the fruits of their labour and a laptop. It looks somewhere between a mad scientists hovel and a meth lab. When I arrive they are well into their latest brew, the last pilsner they made won them the only gold medal at the Nelson Homebrew Competition, hosted by Nelson SOBA and judged by the Sprig & Fern’s Tracey Banner and local craft brewer Dale Holland.

Murchison hosts school field day
CORUBA JOHNNIE WALKER BLACK

Murchison Area School held a field day last week with students bringing along their pets, their crafts and their cooking creations. Deputy principal Tina Johnson says they are fortunate to live in an area where there is such a broad choice of “pets” available and there was “a wonderful array of animals”. Students were challenged to discuss the care of their animals and were also judged on their handling of them. Tina says the young farmer challenge was “a hit as always” and the students, with parental assistance in some events, participated with enthusiasm in events such as the great sheep muster, the laundry challenge and our ever popular farm fencing nail-off.

Nelson’s quilters’ guild celebrated 30 years last week with a special meeting held at Stoke School. A group of 30 helped form the club three decades ago and around 20 of them were there to celebrate its anniversary last Wednesday night. Past president Ann Mitchell says the night was a great opportunity to get everyone together and reminisce on the guild’s history. “There was a good crowd of members there. We read the minutes of the first meeting and someone spoke about the difference between then and now. It was good.” The guild hosts a quilt show every second year, along with monthly meetings, weekends away and Saturday workdays. The 100 plus members – around half from the Waimea region – also celebrated with cake, supper and a competition where entrants were given a page from a quilters magazine from the 80s and asked to make something – no bigger than A4 size – from the page. “They could take one word out of the page, a colour or the pattern that was on it, it was just up to them,” says Ann. Stoke’s Sandra Cahill won that competition out of some very impressive entries.

Andrew Smith from the Rotary Club of Richmond handed out 22 dictionaries to Ranzau School students last week. Each year the Rotary Club of Richmond likes to support a local school with the gift of a dictionary. Andrew says it is a way to help the community and while he wished they could hand them out to every school, he was hopeful that the students from Ranzau School would appreciate them. Amongst the items were a handbag and a moving picture. I had left the remote for the picture at home and let the ladies in the shop know that I’d return with it soon. The following week I returned to the shop with the remote. The ladies out back sorting through stuff recognised me and asked me to wait and see the manager. It turns out I hadn’t checked the handbag and it contained a $50 note. What a lovely surprise on my wedding anniversary that day. So I would like to say a very big thanks to the volunteer ladies at the Richmond Hospice Shop for the honesty in handing in the money. Keep up the great work. Debra Ross, Richmond.

Record field runs Mahana A record number of competitors took part in Sunday’s Run Mahana, and through the hundreds of first-timers and experienced runners, none were quicker than half marathon winner Brian Kemp. Brian clocked in at Woollaston Estate with a time of one hour 21 minutes and 51 seconds. This year’s Run Mahana, hosted by Nelson Events for the fourth consecutive year in its current format attracted more than 1000 participants. Organiser Greg Dykzeul says its success has been boosted since moving the event to a Sunday. Colette Read took out the women’s half marathon more than six minutes ahead of Cheryl Young.
Nelson take outright win
Jane Smith competes in the Run Mahana event on Sunday.
Nelson will head into one of its toughest assignment of the zone 3 Hawke Cup series on the back of a commanding win over West Coast. Nelson’s next opponent Marlborough have not played a match yet and skipper BJ Barnett believes his bowling attack will be primed for the battle after claiming 20 wickets on a batterfriendly Saxton Oval. Nelson opener Dan Cooper hit an unbeaten century on day one, while Marty Kain hit a quick fire 67 runs before being caught at first slip. Even after seeing one batsman head back to the sheds, Nelson continued to deliver more punishment to the poor West Coast bowling attack with Greg Hay and Dan clocking up 224 runs between them as the pair ended the innings on 112 each before declaring. West Coast struggled with the bat, only reaching a dismal 73 in reply to Nelson’s 310/1 declared. Pace bowler Joe O’Connor claimed four wickets for just 22 runs while Marty claimed three of his own. Connor Neynens, Dean Hawley and Dylan Eginton also ended the innings with a wicket to their name. With the follow on enforced, Nelson ensured they would claim an outright victory without having to bat again. While it took longer than expected, West Coast could only manage 224 in reply. Connor, Dean and Dylan took two wickets a piece in the second innings with Marty claimed another three and BJ was left to seal the match. BJ says the match “got a little bit niggly” towards the end, but that it was good to finish them off. “It was quite a hard wicket to take wickets on so to create some opportunities was quite good and was something that we worked on,” he says. In the past West Coast can be a hard team to beat outright, especially away because the weather usually dictates whether the match goes for two days or not.

Nelson driver takes series lead Phillip Rollo
The letter ‘n’ didn’t account for any home advantage on Saturday night but Greg Teece was just stoked to be able to win in front of friends and family. The Nelson sprintcar driver currently leads the General Tyres War of the Wings Series after two feature race wins from three meetings. The only time he didn’t win, on Friday night in Blenheim, the 75n driver still managed to pick up a podium spot. Because sprintcars are only rarely seen in Nelson, Greg has found himself travelling across the country as part of the War of the Wings Series instead. But he’s clearly happy with how things have been going so far this season as he chases the $60,000 cash prize up for grabs. “It’s a pretty awesome buzz to be doing so well,” he says. “There was no home advantage at all. A lot of the drivers have started at midgets and TQs and come to Nelson before. But I’ve only done one practice this season in Nelson so it’s no advantage at all.” Greg always wanted to be a sprintcar driver but finally got the opportunity three seasons ago when his work-mate Kevin Freeman offered him a drive during a practice session in Nelson. “It all started there really. He gave me a lease deal that I couldn’t refuse. But I think he enjoys watching

Greg picked up two heat wins and one second place on Saturday, before winning the feature. “But hopefully we can perform in Christchurch on December 15 as well as we’ve been doing here.”

There is 25 core players here in Nelson and they all lined up for the tournament.” Because the tournament was held at Tahunanui Beach, it was in sight to thousands of people during the two days. “There were a lot of people walking by going ‘what’s this?’ But it was good to show the sport to a lot of new people.” The winning team, Cosmological Constant, included two Nelson players. A beach frisbee competition has attracted more than 100 competitors from around the country, giving it its highest participation numbers since its inception 13 years ago. Hosted by the Nelson Ultimate Disc Experience, the Flat Out ultimate frisbee competition brought a range of competitors from all corners of the country together before splitting them into ten teams for the two day competition. Top mens and womens players were put in separate “hats” prior to the competition, giving each team equal opportunity to land one of the sport’s top players. This “hat tournament” format is considered more social but the calibre was still high with many of the players going on to the mixed nationals next weekend. “A hat tournament is much more laid back and Nelson is a laid back sort of place so it fits perfectly together,” says organiser Jim Risner. Ultimate frisbee is considered a cross between touch rugby and netball, and points are scored by catching a frisbee in the ‘in-zone’. The event has been held at the beginning of summer for the past 13 years and Waimea’s Mike Jeffcott, in the pink, throws a frisbee past his oppoJim was pleased to see it sition at the Flat Out tournament. months of play that their natural green offered says Colleen. “We love getting together and playing whatever the weather, and the artificial greens mean we can do that now. It was time for a change, we wanted to create an amazing place for the Richmond community to utilise, and building the new clubhouse and green is all a part of that.” Club Waimea is no stranger to enjoying a game of bowls, with their currently unused green receiving the overhaul to make way for The Richmond Bowling Club. Manager John Hewison backs the merger 100%. “It will give us a chance to show off our club, and really cement our place as the hub of sport in Richmond.” Building the new facility from the ground up was a big task, and Colleen says Comans have done a fantastic job and thanks the Richmond Bowling Club members that volunteered their time. “A lot of hard labour has gone into this project, with a team of volunteers working hard to help bring the club into fruition.” Lawn bowls is a fun way to keep active and a great chance to meet new people and have a good time,
and the club welcomes new players young or old to have a go. Head down and form a team with friends or join an existing team at the club and enjoy yourself playing an easy social sport. The new club will play host to interclub tournaments and competitions, a great way to hone your skills or learn more about the game while having a bit of friendly competition. These tournaments are hugely popular and lunch afternoon teas are held in the clubhouse over the course of the day. Colleen welcomes new members or people
wanting to find out more to come along on Friday and take a look around. “You’ll see just how excited we are to be part of the bowls community here in Nelson. The club members are just bubbling with excitement and I am overjoyed by how it all looks.” There is a spark coming alive within the Richmond Bowling Club and its members are looking forward to a fun summer and winter bowls programme. “Richmond is growing all the time and now at Club Waimea there are many different social

Golf ladies win again The Totaradale nine hole ladies will spend the third consecutive summer with some silverware in the trophy cabinet after going the year unbeaten with the 9 Hole Challenge Trophy. The competition’s format is similar to rugby’s Ranfurly Shield where the current holder is challenged for the cup.
A challenge is usually held once a month during the season. Totaradale beat Greenacres last year and have managed to stay unbeaten throughout 2012. Their next challenge will be against the Tasman Golf Club next year. Nine hole captain Esme Lowndes says winning the trophy “is a big thing” for the club.
