Hunters focus on safety More hunters are joining local clubs in an effort to stay safe says the president of a deer stalkers club. Morgan Rogers, of the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association, says his club has more than 500 members, making it the second biggest in the country and it has seen a 25 per cent rise in the numbers in the past two years. Membership has spiked on the back of several hunting accidents throughout the country and Morgan says more hunters are safety conscious and wanting to learn how to hunt safely. “There’s definitely been an increase [of members] and people wanting to know what to wear, what not to wear, what to take, how to improve their technique, all that kind of thing,” he says. Since 2002, there have been

15 hunting deaths in New Zealand, the latest just last month in the North Island. Morgan says every death rocks the hunting community and as a result hunters are keen to make sure there isn’t another one. Tasman Police figures show the number of new gun licences issued has remained steady, with around 700 new licences being issued each year. So far this year 418 new licences have been issued in the Tasman policing district, which runs from Haast to Kaikoura and north, with a further 255 renewed. That’s similar to last year’s figure which showed 517 new licences and 245 renewals. In total, the Tasman district has around 18,000 people with a firearms licence, one of the SEE PAGE 2

Sun shines on A&P Show Sinead Ogilvie

Stunning sunshine helped the Nelson A&P Show buck a trend of dwindling numbers over the weekend. Over the two days the crowds were treated to a range of attractions from show jumping, wood chopping, highland dancing, baby animals, and a variety of carnival stalls. The two days of sunny summer weather was a huge part of its success says show coordinator Annette Robinson and she is extremely happy with how the weekend went. “It was the first time in five years we have had two days of sunny weather for the show, and we are more than pleased with how it went.” A line of people stretched from the ferris wheel in the carnival area where the Round Up ride was proving a popular feature with operator Brad Sturgeon saying around 1000 people would have a go on the ride over the weekend. “It’s the thrill of it. The kids like to get up there and have a scream.” He says there were more things to see and do this year, and that there was a good crowd. The wide ranging entertainment was a highlight this year says Annette, including the last ever performance of local Nelson band The Peasants before they disband. The animal nursery, terrier racing, horses and wood chopping were all popular and Annette says being up Friends Toma Noguchi, 15, Brad Crocker, 15, Sanne van Ginkel, 16, Si- close and personal with animals is mon Brinsley, 16, and Matt Hampson, 16, enjoying the A&P Show on an opportunity most people don’t get every day.
