Santa Parade entry causes stir Amy Russ

The Richmond Pak n Save Santa parade certainly turned heads when it made its way through the crowds on Queen St. Events and marketing coordinator for Richmond Unlimited, Charlotte Bidlake, was thrilled at the turnout saying she was really pleased with the day. A packed crowd lined the streets and children looked on in anticpation of seeing the the man himself, Santa Claus. However, an entry entitled ‘Rednek Xmas’ seems to have caused a bit of fuss with some members of the public. The Dodge Ram pickup truck with its repurposed-tyre snowmen, empty beer cans, hunting theme and confederate flag set some tongues wagging. Mayor of Tasman District Council, Richard Kempthorne, spoke out to media saying the float was ‘inappropriate’ for a family event. Glen James, owner of Glen James Jewellers and the owner of the float, says the tongue-in-cheek entry was never meant to offend anyone. “There was never any intention of the float being racist at all or to stir anything up. I am certainly not a racist person. There was no hidden message.” Glen says the idea stemmed from a love of cars and a farming history. “I

Gift cards desired for foundation’s Xmas families The Big Give is back for Christmas and the Fifeshire Foundation has one key message for supporters: please donate gift cards because they give families choices about how to celebrate Christmas. The Big Give is the Fifeshire Foundation’s highest profile fund-raiser. Each year it raises about $20,000 through donations and cash, toys, food, and clothing. Donated items are combined and given to about 300 families throughout the region that are in hardship or crisis. Through all of its efforts year-round, the Fifeshire Foundation has received donations of nearly $1.2 million to help 11,000 people across Nelson Tasman over the last 10 years. Foundation Manager Rachel Swarbrick explains why this

year the organisation wants to encourage donations of gift cards. “Gift cards or vouchers are so versatile. The recipient can buy what they need for their family based on their circumstances. They are the best ones to decide what they need most, especially at this time of year. We feel that this flexibility is going to empower the people we help. “If you’re out shopping for food, toss a gift card into your cart. If you’re buying your kids some toys for the Christmas tree, grab a gift card rather than another toy. So many retailers offer the option of gift cards or vouchers. Wherever you shop and in whatever amount, a gift card is what we’re asking for this year. Then, the families we support can choose what

goes under their Christmas trees.” Rachel says the Trustees spend several days in December coordinating and delivering all the donations to families. This year they will have help from some of the community organisations that refer families, as well as from the Friends of Fifeshire, the organisation’s group of volunteers who donate time throughout the year. Donations of gift cards or other items can be left securely at the following locations: Milestone Homes Giving Tree at Richmond Mall NBS branches in Nelson and Motueka Fifeshire House in the Nelson CBD (MediaWorks office) or donate on www.fifeshirefoundation.co.nz

Kar-ma finally catches up with troublesome driver Amy Russ The driver of a small, red, Toyota Corolla, who has been terrorising the local community with the sound of his car backfiring, has finally been nabbed. It seems he pushed his luck to the limit when the car backfired directly outside the Wakefield Police Station and the driver was consequently pulled over in Spring Grove. The driver of the old hatchback has been cruising around the region for the last couple of weeks and, according to social media, the public has had

enough. With the noise being described as the sound of a gun firing off, the fright of the noise was terrifying for some locals. Online complaints stretched from Wakefield through to Washington Valley and temperatures were running high. The public were calling for police action before some people took matters into their own hands. Wakefield constable Jamie White assures the public that peace is again restored. “The driver has now been dealt with by the police. “His car is green-stickered,

and he is forbidden from driving that vehicle. “He has been dealt with by way of multiple infringement notices and, if he is caught again and his licence hasn’t been updated, his car will be impounded.” Jamie says it is a good reminder for people that, before jumping on to social media, they should call the local police station or even pop in and have a chat to the officer on duty. “If we are not contacted about these things it makes it hard for us to follow them up.”

own a Dodge Ram and a Polaris, which are both American-made vehicles. In the past I have spent quite a bit of money on our entries and, this year, I wanted to keep costs down a little. The farming look is fairly cheap to replicate so that is where that came from.” The two-time Richmond parade float-winner says the reaction he got from the crowd seemed like a very positive one. “They seemed to love it, I was getting the thumbs up from people and laughing. “The feedback was that it was really interactive. I had one woman approach me after the parade wanting the flag taken down. I appreciate her coming

to chat and it was fine.” Charlotte would like to move on and says it is a shame that some people seem to focus on the negative. But she assures the public the team will be doing their utmost to vette all future floats. “Richmond Unlimited are sorry there was something unknowingly offensive in the parade. “We genuinely believe there there was no ill intention involved and hope the other positives from the day can be remembered.” Scouts Nelson won first place in the Richmond Pak n Save Santa parade, with Higgins taking second, and the Celtic Pipe Band securing third place.

Glen says he will be entering a toned-down version of the ‘rednek Xmas’ float into the Nelson parade.

Zinc Café, BBQ and Heating held their BBQ demo on Saturday, November 24. Online scams rife The New Zealand Police are once again warning the public about the prevalence of online scams. In the first quarter of 2018 more than 583 million fake accounts were removed from Facebook. The police warn that the chances of the general public engaging with a fake scammer online are “incredibly high” and this should be kept with the same caution as who you would tell where your spare house key is kept.

Road safety reminder In light of recent tragedies, local emergency responders are wanting to remind people to take care on the roads. A spokesman for the Tasman Marlborough Fire Area says far too many people are being injured and killed. “With summer, and holidays, coming up, we do not want it to get worse. These incidents take a terrible toll in our communities and on our responders.” If you see poor or unsafe driving contact 111 and report it to the police immediately. Or collect the vehicle registration, make, and colour, and report them as soon as possible.

Forestry activity in Teetotal Contract work of roading and forestry operations is being undertaken in the Teetotal area near St Arnaud, and Nelson Forest are advising the public to be aware of road and track closures in the upcoming months. Clear felling will be done on Douglas Hill during December and January. Taylors Contracting are opening the far end of the Teetotal Block for roading operations. Summit Track will be closed to the public until March 2019 for logging and construction infrastructure.

Tasman mayor renews call for proactive driver drug testing Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne is encouraging the government to develop a proactive roadside drug testing regime that would allow appropriate drug testing at the roadside to help improve safety on the region’s, and New Zealand’s, roads. “We know that drugs and alcohol have been a contributing factor in a number of crashes on Tasman roads over the past year. I don’t see why a proactive drug testing should be treated any differently to random alcohol tests, which are commonly used to deter drink driving and remove Richard drunk drivers from the road Kempthorne before they can cause an accident.” Richard says his thoughts were with the friends and family of those involved in the most recent crash on State Highway 60. “There’s a suite of measures we need to take, reduced speed limits, as planned for SH60, random drug and alcohol testing.”

Dark Sky Proposal update Public consultation regarding the Dark Sky Proposal for the Lake Rotoiti district has resulted in an overwhelming majority of returns in favour of the proposal. Accordingly, Nelson Lakes Dark Sky committee members have asked the Top of the South Dark Sky Committee to proceed to have necessary lighting measurements recorded and the area accredited if the criteria is met. This is an international accreditation. Head of the committee, Ralph Bradley, says the night sky really is a treasure, “it’s just magic.”

River rescue highlights need for caution A teenager rescued from a local river recently is a timely reminder to be cautious when swimming in rivers or streams this summer, say police. Sergeant Malcolm York, Search and Rescue coordinator for Nelson Bays Police, says the girl could have easily drowned after being swept down the river. “It is imperative that you are aware of the conditions and not put yourself or friends and family at risk.” Rivers are changeable and unpredictable, particularly after a rainfall, check the current and for any hazards before swimming.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Giving old goods a new life Amy Russ Second-Hand Sunday is upon us and is a great way to have a spring clean before Christmas, says Nic Brydon, Tasman District Council’s partnership and education officer. “The Second-Hand Sunday is a great initiative to reduce waste going to landfill. It emphasis reusing and up-cycling second-hand goods to give them a new life. The feedback from communities has been extremely positive from past events, so the councils are looking into running the event more often in the future.” Nic says the benefits range from saving money to teaching people to consume less and reuse more. Some ideas of things for people to put out include children’s toys, clothing, kitchenware and electronics. “Please make sure the second-hand goods are in acceptable condition.” The event is free to register, and anyone can treasure-hunt for goods in Tasman and Nelson on December 2 from 10am onwards. “It is a great way to save money. No disposal fees for givers and free goods for buyers!” Keep an eye on the council page for residential registrations.

Plan now for unexpected outages With a little planning you can be prepared for an unexpected power outage.

Coastguard needs help to save lives Charles Anderson The local Coastguard is redoubling its efforts to raise money for a new $1.3 million vessel after it was revealed that rescues have doubled over the last year. Figures released to Waimea Weekly show that last year Coastguard saved 19 people by pulling them out of the water and had 54 incidents of assistance. This year that number has skyrocketed to 44 rescues and 80 incidents of assistance. “There are just so many more boats out on the water,” says local Coastguard member Wayne Ormandy. “We really need a boat that can get out there and do the job.” The current Coastguard boat is 22-years-old and past its prime and the volunteer organisation is in dire need a of a new one. It has already had it designed. Valued at $1.3 million, the new 11.3m Naiad vessel is almost

3m longer than Coastguard’s current vessel and will be based at Port Nelson. Volunteers have also put in

The new boat Coastguard is raising money for. Photo: Supplied 4410 hours of service this year compared to 2256 last year. Wayne says it shows how needed the service is but the current vessel is too small and injured survivors and crew can face long periods at sea exposed to the elements. The boat is also old and unreliable with an inability to handle rough weather. Wayne says they have raised about $300,000 but there is still a long way to go.

He says many people don’t realise that Coastguard is a charity, manned by 25 volunteers who are called to incidents around their normal work day. The first four there head out. “Survival time in the water is one hour, so time is always of the essence.” The local Coastguard has one of New Zealand’s largest areas of responsibility – all of Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay. It is funded by donations from the Nelson Tasman community and provides a maritime search and rescue safety net for those who find themselves in trouble at sea. “There is no alternative,” Wayne says. “If you get in trouble and Coastguard isn’t around then you are at the mercy of passing vessels. That’s why we need this new boat.” Coastguard plans to double down on its campaign to raise the funds up to Christmas and then again in the new year.

Severe weather events and storms can occur at any time, even during the summer months. Now is a great time to make sure you have everything you need should the weather cause a power outage. Make sure you have: z A torch and extra batteries. z A fully charged cell phone or a land line phone that doesn’t require electricity or fibre. z A supply of water that isn’t dependent on an electric pump. z A BBQ or gas cooker. z A supply of matches or a lighter. If a member of your household is medically dependent on electricity, in addition to making sure you have the items above you should have an emergency plan in place. Your plan should include: z An established network of people you can call on for help and their contact details. z Knowledge of your medical equipment: » Does it have an audible “no power” alarm that will alert you to a power failure? » Does it have battery back-up or a standby source of power and for how long? » Do you know how to use the backup or standby equipment and are you confident that you could operate the equipment in an emergency? z An evacuation plan that includes where you will go, how you will get there, a pre-packed bag with the things you will need and if necessary arrangements for your pet. Remember to notify family and friends who might be concerned for you. z Instructions on how to manually operate an electrically operated garage door - if you need to evacuate, you may need to manually operate an electrically operated garage door to do so. Because the power can be restored at any time after an unexpected outage, treat all lines, electrical installations and wiring as live during an outage. If your power goes off turn off any sensitive electronic equipment such as entertainment systems, computers, and washing machines at the wall. This helps protect them in the event of voltage fluctuations when the power is live again. To report a power outage, damage to the power network, or a public safety issue on the network phone 0800 508 100.

NEW SEASON

Filco Farm and Sport operations manager Perry Francis. Photo: Jonty Dine.

Nelson’s home of Harley’s Jonty Dine The world’s most iconic motorcycle brand is setting up shop in Nelson. Filco Farm and Sport has been appointed the home of Harley Davidson for Nelson and the Top of the South. Operations manager Perry Francis says Harley knocked on the door nine months ago as they wanted representation in the region, and now “here we are”. Perry says they are privileged to be the new home of Harleys which reflects 31 years of trusted service in the region. “They are a small network and they are very picky, but they are very proactive and visible. There is no stronger brand worldwide, it’s like Coca-Cola.” The dealers will boast all the most iconic models from the Fxdr114,

which cost up to $56,000, to the Fatboy. Perry says they will be a one-stop Harley shop. “We have all the specialist tools and diagnostics and the Harley owner’s ‘bible’ so they can customize their bikes however they want.” He says despite lacking the population of the big city centres, the region does have a high number of motorcyclists. Perry says Harley fanatics collect the iconic clothing from different regions all around the world. “We have sold more t-shirts in the last three weeks than we have in the last three years.” Filco will host a launch party, this Saturday, which will feature a Show and Shine competition, with Best Harley Davidson, Best Triumph, Best Yamaha, Best Kawasaki, Best European entries and fashion parades, showcasing the Harley clothing range.

Norm Hewitt breakfast a great success Amy Russ A breakfast fund-raiser for Life Education Trust was held at the Nelson Suburbs Football Club on Thursday, November 22. One of the key organisers, Michelle Fitzgerald, says they had a great turnout with 80 people attending the event. “Norm Hewitt, ex-All Black and Dancing with the Stars winner, was the guest speaker.

His address to the people attending was heartfelt and truly inspiring. Norm’s history is one that includes domestic violence, struggling with his own identity along with other challenges. He has turned his life around and is now dedicated to helping people realise their true potential and take responsibility for their actions. The morning finished off with an auction of a signed Richie

McCaw All Blacks jersey. This went really well with the first auction winner donating it back to Life Ed to be re-auctioned. Being able to auction the jersey twice was a major contributor to us raising over $8,200 for Life Ed. Mick Toll was the second successful bidder. All the money raised yesterday will funnel directly back to the children in the Nelson/Tasman region.”

Murchison theatre celebrates 100th birthday Emily Beaumont The grand old lady in Murchison spent Labour Weekend celebrating her 100th birthday with around 150 keen theatre goers. The Murchison Theatre is renowned as a unique venue with great acoustics and an old-fashioned feel. The current building was erected in 1918 and was used as a picture theatre for many years. Throughout her 100-year life-span it has been the home of local productions, pantomimes, R18 shows, music events, school plays, and a wide range of visiting performances. During the 1920s and 1930s the hall was used for social events including bachelor’s and spinster’s balls. It played host

to many travelling entertainers in that period, including showman Eddie Martin who died onstage during a performance. Fast-forward to this Labour Weekend and she was filled with displays and old sets, as well as the energetic cast of Grease from the Nelson Youth Theatre Company. “We all enjoyed them, and they enjoyed us, and they’ve said they’re coming back next year. The entire weekend of celebrations went really well, we all had a great time,” says centennial committee member Cheryl Monahan. The next project for the theatre team is to complete the renovations for the 207-seat theatre, to enable them to continue many more years of performances and memories.

Scout troops adventure through Wellington

Scouts and Venturers from the Richmond Scout Group were lucky enough to spend their Labour Weekend on an organised camp in Wellington. The Venturers first day involved Adrenaline Forest, ice skating and Weta workshop, before join-

ing up with the Scout group, who spent their first day visiting Parliament, the Gallipoli trench experience and trying out their skills at a circus school. Committee member Nicole Le Bas says both the groups enjoyed the orienteering course, supplied

by the council, around the Wellington waterfront. “The zoo visit and sleepover was a highlight with a night tour of the zoo and helping feed the animals - an experience you don’t get to have every day! And the Wrights Hill Fortress was amazing! A grassy

Nelson Matters NOW NOW

Nelson Greypower, Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese and I are doing all we can to save Stoke’s Kiwibank and PostShop. The shock announcement of closure came from NZ Post and Kiwibank without any consultation last week. My greatest concern is the impact on the 4,500 older residents of Stoke who depend on face to face banking services for their independence. I have been contacted by dozens of seniors, particularly those in their 80s and 90s, who do not use internet banking and are fearful for their future. Some talk of giving Power of Attorney to family members over their banking, others are consider-

ing going into homes. These seniors deserve better. I also worry about the impact on the Stoke shopping precinct. If people have to go to Richmond or the city for banking and other services, they are likely to do their other shopping there too. This undermines the viability of our Stoke Pharmacy, fruit shop, bakery and other retailers. I appreciate that services may have to close if they are not being used, but the Stoke Kiwibank and PostShop is well used and busy. There is often a queue for services and the Stoke branch’s turnover is similar to city branches in Auckland and Wellington.

Nor can it be argued that Kiwibank or NZ Post is under financial stress. Kiwibank made a profit of $122 million this year, up from $58 million last year. NZ Post has just announced a $13 million profit. It was poor form for no one from the Coalition Government, Kiwibank or NZ Post to front at last Friday’s public meeting that was packed with over 230 concerned residents. Every Labour, NZ First and Green party MP was invited but none could be bothered turning up to explain this decision. The star of the meeting was Nelson Greypower President Christine Tuffnell. Her challenge for Govern-

hill with a great view of the Wellington Harbour, but underneath are metres of concreted and welllit tunnels and rooms. A fascinating piece of Wellington history!” Scout member Rory Stock says he had a brilliant time away, “our Wellington Scout trip was

an amazing camp, perhaps one of the best we have done. A big thanks to all the leaders who put in a massive amount of time and effort into organising these incredible camps.” The trip was funded by selling firewood around the region.

NOW

ment Ministers and Chief Executives to get a walker and try the bus trip to and from Stoke to the Nelson branch said it all. Her statement to PM Jacinda Ardern that this closure decision made a mockery of her government’s pledge to put people before profit was correct and the meeting endorsed Greypower’s pleas “let’s not do this.” The closure also contradicts the Labour/NZ First Coalition agreement to expand public services in regional New Zealand and the recently launched Government strategy to give older people greater independence. The greatest hypocrisy is NZ First

and Shane Jones who last month were decrying privately owned banks for closing regional branches. He and Winston Peters are Ministers of State Owned Enterprises in charge of NZ Post and Kiwibank. There is no point in the Government owning Kiwibank if it is to mimic the Aussie banks. The Census disaster earlier this year where 400,000 people were not counted shows the flaw in relying exclusively on the internet. We need to recognise the needs of our older citizens by ensuring face to face services like Stoke’s Kiwibank and PostShop are maintained. Advt.

Letter to the Editor sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz Dear Editor, Thankyou Chris Choat, T.D.C Community Relations Manager for replying on behalf of the Mayor or C.E.O to whom my request for information was directed. I am aware of the points made regarding councils having different approaches in applying rates is valid, however what is in question is the application of the TDC’s Uniform General Charge (U.A.G.C) as applied to retirement villages. That question remains unanswered. I am also aware that councils throughout NZ have the choice under the Rating Act in how they choose to collect the U.A.G.C. from retirement villages. Most councils choose option one and apply the U.A.G.C. rate to all individually occupied units within retirement complexes, while the TDC chose option two and collect only one U.A.G.C of $290 (2018/19) from the village owner. In adopting that policy, I believe that the TDC is treating other ratepayers unfairly, simple because retirement village residents use the very same infrastructure and amenities as other contributing ratepayers. Chris Choat states “The Tasman approach does not result in any revenue loss”, - hard to believe. How does this equate to a retirement village owner paying a U.A.G.C. rate of $290p.a. and say 100 retirement village residents paying $290 p.a each ($290 x 100 amounts to $29,000 p.a). By my calculations that’s a revenue loss of $28,710 p.a to TDC ratepayers. Spread that over three retire-

ment villages locally and the revenue loss rises to at least $86,130p.a. While I appreciate Chris’s reply is in line with TDC’s current rating policy, what elected councillors need to do is to re-consider if the current policy is fair and equitable, and make any changes during the 2019/20 rate review which I believe is underway. J.B. Anderson Retirement Village Rates Nov 29 Dear Editor, Would Chris Choat please explain his statement “The Tasman approach does not result in any revenue loss”. (As printed in Waimea Weekly November 21). At the same time perhaps he could explain why 300 properties in retirement villages do not pay the ‘Urban Water Supply Service Charge’ of $332.74? Albie Aubrey Waimea Weekly have forwarded this letter on to the Tasman District Council but is yet to recieve a response.

Police Shame: “Before pushing this to the expense of a police complaint and subsequent investigation, the police should hand over the body cam footage. That will show exactly what the situation was, and will either negate the need for an enquiry or expediate the case. It’s simple when you think about it. If there’s nothing to hide then why make it complicated.” Alison Holmes

It’s the month of Movember – an opportunity for men grow a moustache to raise money and awareness about men’s health, and over the years many local businesses and individuals have got on board to support the worthy cause. The funds raised each year go towards programmes targeted at prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Globally, men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates are projected to double in the next 15 years; testicular cancer rates have already doubled, and annually three quarters of suicides are men. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and it’s not being talked about. We can’t afford to stay silent. Many local businesses have got in behind Movember over the years including Founders Brewery and Stormy’s Man Cave Barber which teamed up to raise funds and awareness for men’s health in 2015, holding a Magnum P I-themed ‘mo party’ at the end of the month. Last year 27 staff members at the Tasman District Council signed up for Movember and grew moustaches, with a goal to raise $1500 for the cause. Urban Eatery also supported Movember in 2017; its team shaved off their facial hair and collectively donated funds to a local mental health organisation. Urban Eatery also had a ‘mo tin’ at the bar so people could donate to the cause. Last year in excess of $900,000 dollars was raised throughout New Zealand, a record amount.

The Movember movement’s humble beginnings date back to 2003 when two mates, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery met up for a quiet beer in Melbourne and discussed the idea that sparked the concept of Movember. It was an era when moustaches had all but disappeared as a fashion trend, but they decided to talk their mates into growing a mo. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. They designed the rules of Movember and agreed to charge ten dollars to grow a Mo. Trav designed the first Movember logo, and they sent around an email titled ‘Are you man enough to be my man?’ Then they found 30 guys willing to take up the challenge. Those first ‘Mo Bros’ grew their moustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a decision was made to formalise the concept and get

Super Stocks new kid on the block Brad Neiman might be the new kid on the block as far as Super Stocks go but he comes with plenty of “street cred”, his transition through Youth Ministocks into Stock cars sees him enter the Super Stock game with plenty of laps under his belt. The four seasons racing for the Tasman Thunder stock car team will see him able to hold his own ground and means he won’t be a pushover when it comes to getting down and dirty. He got a taste of Super Stock action when being named as the 6th driver for the Nelson tigers at last year’s palmy teams event, he was called upon after a driver injury and quickly came to grips with the faster more responsive machine, his brief stint leaving him well and truly bitten by the Super stock bug. It was a forgone conclusion when the Stock car was listed for sale not long after, that the Reeschassis car wouldn’t hang around long. saw over 80 athletes at the recent Waimea Harrier Club Wednesday evening 5km series from the Eddyline in Richmond. Competition was fierce among the top contenders with the first 4 runners, Cameron Jones, Joel Bowater, Chris Sharland and Matt Jeans all finishing in under 20mins. A very strong field of walkers was lead home by Daryl Nish with another five walkers less than two min-

utes behind him. Running conditions were also very good, despite impending rain, for the popular 6.5km ‘Panorama Drive’ race on Saturday, November 24. With a long hill climb, this is one of the more challenging of our summer runs, but that did not deter the 58 athletes who took part. Chris Sharland ran strongly to take out line honours in a very commendable time of 26.22 mins, with Dan

Busch in second place just 30 secs behind him. Klaartjie van Schie led the woman’s field home in an equally impressive time of 28.07mins with Colette Read just over a minute behind her. The fastest male walker was Peter Hague, 43.52 mins, with Alan West 30secs behind him. Gillian McDougall was the fastest female walker, in 50.52mins, two minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Paddy Tarrant.

Students smash athletic records Two records were broken at Waimea Intermediate School’s annual athletics day this year. Shannan Delany jumped 5m in the year-8 girls long-jump to break the record of 4.90 set by Hayley Bond in 2016. Ben Walker beat the year-8 boys high-jump record by more than 10cm, jumping 1.63m – higher than himself! Shannan also cleaned up on the track, winning the 60m, 100m, 400m and 800m, a feat echoed by Harrison Inch who crossed the line first in all of those events for the year-7 boys. Harrison also won the long-jump, high-jump and shotput. These three athletes went on to join 60 other Waimea Intermediate School students competing in the interschool athletics at Saxton Stadium, where further impressive feats were achieved during the meet.

Ben Walker smashed his year group’s highjump record by more than 10cm, clearing the bar at more than his own height.

Uphill battle for local corporate rowers Ideal conditions set the scene for the epic battle between Nelson and Marlborough Corporate 8’s rowing teams over the weekend. Unfortunately, a dominant performance by Joe Blakiston’s team, PGG Wrightson Real Estate, saw local team Johnston Associates headed by Julian Stilwell lose to the crew from

over the hill. Julian says the pre-race banter was put aside on the water. “The whole corporate rowing scene was about having fun and I encourage more Nelson businesses to get behind next year’s event in May.” The Nelson rowers, on limited preparation, had a four second benefit based on having

two extra women in the crew. However, that was not enough of a buffer to hold off what Joe Blakiston describes as a very good team display. The event was held as a feature of the junior regatta at the Blenheim Rowing Club. Joe says, “in the good spirit of corporate sport, $500 was donated to junior rowing which Wairau club representative and coach of the winning team, Barry Chandler, accepted with gratitude at the prize-giving, hoping that this challenge race could be a regular feature in the corporate rowing calendar.” Left: Team captains Joe Blakiston and Julian Stilwell with the $500 donation to the junior rowing clubs. Dawnbreakers Club Ladies and the deputy harbourmaster on the harbourmaster’s boat.

Driving lessons on the water Dominik Berghamer Recently I read an article about women’s boating safety courses run by the Deputy Harbourmaster Amanda Kerr. I organized a group of ladies from the club to partake in the course. There was no problem finding six willing ladies to do this as we had talked about doing something like this for some time. The course was run over a Thursday evening and a Sunday morning. On the Thursday night we were taught the rules of the sea and useful safety information including dismantling and checking our inflatable life vests. (Amanda has kindly agreed to come to a club social day to demonstrate this – we were all worried about setting them off and hence had not bothered to pull them apart!) Also, we had a go at tying knots with rope. None of us had this skill and when you are tying up to a jetty or putting your burley pot down, this is very

handy to know. On Sunday morning we all crawled out of bed nice and early (for a Sunday!) and got ourselves down to the boat ramp at 9am to have a practical morning on the water in the harbourmaster’s boat. We were all really looking forward to this and Amanda lived up to all of our expectations! She reinforced the rules of the harbour and we all had a drive of the boat, and some of us had a go at putting the boat on the trailer (a rubber pontoon – it’s all good boys! No damage was done!) and parking the boat by the jetty. It was a great course and as each one of us are often out with just our men, we are now armed with information and skills to help out in the case of an emergency. Thanks Amanda! Boating safety is a very important topic for the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club. To find out more visit our website www.dawnbreakers. co.nz or find us on facebook.

Close competition for triathletes Peter Gibbs

Tough competition at the front of the field was a feature on Sunday, November 18, at the Chia Super Sprint Triathlon at Rabbit Island with Jon Linyard and Renee Hunt coming out on top. The season opener offered a range of options, with the basic format of 200m swim, 6km bike and 1km run repeated three times. Competitors could complete the

entire nine stages or mix and match with team mates. Jon and Josh Barber raced through the first three disciplines, working together on the bike and starting the second swim with Josh ten seconds ahead. Jon used his swim skills to make a break and rode away on his own to complete the second triathlon a minute quicker than Josh. Despite cutting back the lead in the third triathlon, Josh

couldn’t bridge the gap, with Jon winning in 59 minutes 56 seconds and Josh 36 seconds behind. Rod Harrhy (1.02.22) and Tom Davies (1.07.53) took out third and fourth. Behind them an epic battle was unfolding, with Renee Hunt and Lorraine Mellors sticking like glue. After eight stages, the pair went into the final transition together. Renee pulled something extra out of the hat to sprint

Local students impress with swim Peter Gibbs There’s a tidal shift going on in the Port Nelson Sea swims standings and it’s led by a large group of teenagers, most of them aged 15. Alec Swan had a point to prove on Thursday after finishing first the previous week but being docked 10 seconds for a navigation error and relegated to second. He made his point emphatically, sprinting to the finish to pip last year’s top swimmer, 20-year-old Luke Kelly, by two seconds. Luke and fellow 20-year-old Hayden Squance have dominated proceedings for the past two seasons, but Alec and a further armada of teenagers have changed the rules in the last fortnight. On a fine night, 165 swimmers were set to swim, with 132 taking on the 1km course and 33 starting in the 500m short course. A large bunch stuck together over the first 300m, heading south from the yacht club ramp into a moderate current. Luke found himself leading while the group

took advantage of the drafting benefit tucked in behind. As they turned right to swim out to the dolphin navigation marker, Alec began to challenge, breaking away over the leg to the final buoy, offshore from the ramp. The group had reduced to four, with Oxford Bayley dropping off and Hayden taking the wrong line to the buoy. As they rounded the mark with 50m to go, Alec established his position, touching down in 11 minutes 18 seconds, ahead of Kelly (11.20) and teenagers Bendi Kepess (11.21) and Fergus Drummond (11.23). Next was a group comprising Bayley (11.48), Squance (11.51) and Nic Hall (11.52). Last summer’s top female, 15-year-old Sierra Thomas (11.59) was close behind, ahead of the first mature swimmer, 46-year-old Terry Bone (12.03). Josh Sheridan (12.04) took the tenth spot. Sophie Alexander (12.29) was the second woman, finishing in 14th overall, ahead

of Zara Aydon (12.34). The top ten females were rounded out by RubyLou Stuart (12.58), Christina Harris (13.16), Abbey Smale (13.20), Flossie Van Dyke (13.35), Hannah Martin (13.47), Georgie Trengrove (14.15) and Jude Vincent (14.16). In the short swim, Robert Sheridan came out on top, racing home in 6 minutes 59 seconds, with a gap back to Brooke Swan (7.23). Many of the slower swimmers struggled with the current in the first leg, but there were no such problems at the front, as Mia Langley came home third in 7min 31 sec ahead of Lilly Hall (7.51), Hannah Hobbs (7.55), Fenlon Bayley (8.07), Caitlin Alexander (9.08) and Tom Perkins (9.12). With 15 swims remaining in the weekly series, there’s plenty of time for developments in the front of the field and in all the age groups, as competitors react to developments. OPINION Rick Curtis, ex-Chairman of the Kerikeri Irrigation Scheme.

Kerikeri example proves dams work I’ve been observing with some interest the ongoing debate over the Waimea Dam in Tasman and wish to share some of the benefits of the Kerikeri Irrigation Scheme that we experienced in the Far North. Built in the early 1980s by the Government’s Ministry of Works department, the scheme has completely transformed our district. There used to be water wars in Kerikeri, people sucked the river dry at a time that pre-dated the Resource Management Act. Somewhat archaically, the Postmaster was responsible for dishing out permits for water. These days there is no drama around minimum flows.

People enjoying the vibrant town centre at the annual Kerikeri Street Party.

While the scheme was originally built to provide water for horticulture and agriculture, it also supports lifestyle blocks, commercial users and raw bulk water for the town supply. The impact of the irrigation scheme has been far broader than just providing advantages to growers, with immense benefits across the social spectrum of our community.

Manuwai reservoir, part of the Kerikeri Irrigation Scheme, is enjoyed by the community for a whole range of recreational pursuits.

An impact assessment found after 30 years of the scheme operating, it has created 1,300 additional jobs and adds as much as $106 million each year to the Northland economy. A total of 6.5% of all jobs in our Far North District are due to the Kerikeri scheme’s operation.

Horticulture is a very positive story, however the current climate in New Zealand makes it very difficult for any irrigation scheme to get off the ground. It’s an industry that offers high productivity returns per hectare, high levels of employment per hectare, and a minimum use of water for creating value.

The Manuwai reservoir is used for a whole number of recreational activities like waka ama, trout fishing and kayaking. Unlike popular discourse about the negative environmental impact of “dams”, the scheme has contributed positive environmental outcomes, improving the water quality of our rivers and streams.

In a hostile political environment to one of the country’s most productive sectors, it is much harder to move forward with irrigation today. Those opposing often take a philosophical approach, rather than one that is based on sound science or rationale. Correctly engineered, designed and built irrigation schemes are all about stopping the destruction of rivers.

An exceptional piece of engineering, the Kerikeri irrigation scheme has two main reservoirs that are sited high in the catchment to enable a largely gravity-fed irrigation supply. The scheme is designed to store water during peak rainfall periods and release it during dry times, maintaining the natural flows of our local waterways throughout the year.

I urge people in the Tasman community to make sure they research the benefits of irrigation schemes such as the Kerikeri example before making their mind up on the Waimea Dam. The benefits of a successful scheme are immediate, real and long-term, and can be felt across the entire community - urban and rural.

Secondhand Sunday is back on Sunday 2 December – it’s the region-wide garage sale where everything is free! Register now to take part if you’re keen to clear some space before Christmas by handing on household items you no longer need. On the day, put out your pre-loved treasures for others to come and collect, and pop the downloadable sign on your letterbox. For those looking for no-cost Christmas gifts, you can find a list of participating addresses on our website the day before. Then head out and help yourself! Find out more: Head to tasman.govt.nz/link/shs for more information and to register.

Food business registration Do you make or sell food? You may need to apply for food business registration. New rules apply under the Food Safety Act, and food businesses need to submit their application to register by 30 November this year. Not sure if you need to register, or want to find out how? More information on the new requirements is available at www.mpi.govt.nz/food-act-2014.

Public forum guidelines for 30 November There are some changes to the Public Forum guidelines for the Full Council meeting in the Richmond Council Chamber on Friday 30 November. We ask that everyone planning to attend be aware of and follow these guidelines. If you wish to speak in the public forum section of the meeting, please register your intention by 2.00 pm on Thursday 29 November. You can do this by emailing sandie.hutchinson@tasman.govt.nz, or phoning 543 8400. A maximum of 30 minutes will be allocated specifically for those wishing to speak in opposition to the Waimea Community Dam project and a maximum of 30 minutes for those wishing to speak in favour. (The Mayor is exercising his discretion under Standing Orders as Chair to allow an extended public forum.) If the time is over-allocated, priority will be given to those who have not previously spoken in the public forum on the topic of the Waimea Community Dam. Each speaker has a maximum of three minutes. As the Waimea Community Dam is the only topic on the agenda for this meeting, speakers will be limited to the topic of the dam. The usual limit on the number of people from a single organisation who may speak will apply – that is, no more than two speakers from any one organisation. Normal practice for public forum is that speakers may have their say, but it is not a forum for councillors to question speakers. However, if there are matters of clarification the Mayor has the discretion to allow questions. We can accommodate a maximum of 50 people in the Council Chamber. Priority will be given to those who register to speak in the public forum. We can accommodate a limited number of 30 extra people at the back of the public foyer area next to the Chamber (fire escape access must be maintained). Thank you in advance for your co-operation with these guidelines.

Find out more and have your say on any of these topics at www.tasman.govt.nz/ feedback.

Priority buildings: Earthquake-prone buildings on important routes Consultation closes 3 December 2018 We need your help to identify the key roads, footpaths, other thoroughfares and strategic routes in our District in order to identify “priority buildings” that will be prioritised for earthquake-strengthening or demolition. Strengthening or demolition of priority buildings will save lives. It will also keep our strategic transport routes open so critical services can continue operating.

Proposed Age-Friendly Policy Consultation closes 25 January 2019 We want your views on our proposed Age-Friendly Policy, which will guide our planning to explicitly consider the needs of the growing number of older residents in our communities. The proposed policy sets goals and objectives across a range of areas where the Council has a role in developing an age-friendly community.

Alcohol licence applications Current applications for alcohol licences, including information on how to object, are advertised on our website.

The Council has adopted a new Control of Alcohol in Public Places Bylaw 2018. The new bylaw comes into force on 17 December 2018, and replaces the previous Control of Liquor in Public Places Bylaw. The places and times covered by the bylaw remain the same. Changes to the bylaw reflect administrative changes imposed by changes in underlying statutes brought into effect by the alcohol reform legislation of 2012. The new bylaw is available for inspection in Council offices and libraries and online at www.tasman.govt.nz.

Bateup Road widening: Christmas work shutdown Work on the widening of Bateup Road, Richmond, will take a break over the Christmas period to reduce disruption to residents and the public over the holiday season. The project is to widen the road and provide a shared walkway/cycleway path to cater for increasing volumes of vehicle, cycle and pedestrian traffic from new subdivisions and a new supermarket planned for the area. It includes upgrades to water and stormwater infrastructure for the growing population in this part of Richmond. Construction will stop between Friday 21 December and Monday 7 January. We hope to reopen the road to two lanes over that time, but will assess whether we can ensure pedestrian and motorist safety before making a final decision. More information on the Bateup Road Widening project can be found on our website, at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/ bateup.

Barry and Mavis Hunt epitomise long service. The couple have dedicated almost 70 years to the sport they love and were presented with Long Service Awards from Athletics NZ at the Harold Nelson Classic on Saturday night. Barry has worn almost every hat possible in the athletics world. He has coached world champions, witnessed sporting history and helped create dynasties. “I have been an athlete, coach, selector, manager, time keeper, been to World Championships, Commonwealth Games and formed two clubs.” The 87-year-old is from an era when amateur coaches gave their life for the love of the game, not the pay check. “I was never paid for my coaching, but I had some wonderful experiences.” Mavis has also dedicated her life to the track. Whether as a timekeeper, an official or helping her husband with his training. She says she was the mother of the team most of the time. “I just love to be involved.” The 85-year-old says she has been all over the country timekeeping. Sprinting, of course, runs in the blood of their children. Their son Peter Hunt is also a
