Brightwater’s main street upgrade
tasman.govt.nz/elections Bruno Saia
An upgrade of Brightwater’s Ellis Street will begin later this year and is intended to make the main street through the village a safer and more attractive public space. The total project budget is $1.9 million and the work will create a shared footpath for pedestrians and cyclists, traffic-calming islands to slow vehicle speeds and provide safer crossing areas, streetscaping including landscaping, plantings, street furniture and lighting, as well as stormwater improvements and the undergrounding of power lines to reduce skyline clutter. Tasman District Council project manager Graham Rimmer says the work will soon go out for tender, with construction now likely to begin in November. “It’s a big project and work will be ongoing until about September 2020, although the contractor will take a break over the Christmas period to reduce disruption at this busy time of year. “We’ve had a great response from the Brightwater community, with Brightwater school, the Brightwater Community Association and residents getting involved with the early consultation on the upgrade plans. That has led to a street design that addresses some of the major community concerns around safety and will also recognise and celebrate the heritage and landscape characteristics of Brightwater.” Materials have been selected for their relevance to the Wairoa River and the cultural heritage of Brightwater, as well as being locally sourced and durable, such as wood, river stones and weathered steel. Heritage buildings and historic stories will be recognised through information panels and other streetscape elements, Graham says.

The Daffodil Rally is an initiative of the National Office of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand and it was a huge success last Sunday at the Club Rooms, in Richmond. Over 2308 cars were present and took part in the Rally, plus around 200 vehicles owned by members of the general public were also part of the day. There were approximately 3,000 raffle tickets on sale over the past four weeks and the food, tea,

Jasmine the fairy surprising Miranda with a random act of kindness. Photo supplied.
Richmond Unlimited’s Random Act of Kindness week is over for 2019. The event was to promote businesses in Richmond’s CBD by encouraging customers to visit retailers and they would be in to win a share of $2500. They needed to keep an eye out for the fairy appearing around the area, surprising customers by paying their bills. This was to highlight the social media side of advertising, so businesses were only informed about the promotion if they received emails from Richmond Unlimited. They could then print off a poster to display in their window, it also included ideas on going that ‘extra mile’ for custom-
ers and being extra nice to members of their staff. Businesses could also find out about the event if they went onto their website or their Facebook page. The fairy paid for a wide variety of goods from groceries and petrol to lunch and WOFs. Photos of the recipients were immediately uploaded to Richmond Unlimited FB page and the businesses. The postings generated other small acts of kindness. For example, “a gentleman dropped some money in the street and when the child who picked it up to return it handed it to him, he told her to keep it. People sharing that kind stuff still happens” says Charlotte from Richmond Unlimited. Businesses that were social
media savvy could take full advantage of this promotion, and many did, but those that didn’t were at a significant disadvantage. Only one poster was clearly on display which was in Impressions, who had received the email but didn’t see the fairy. They didn’t change their work practices that week as their customer service is always high,” said their sales assistant. HearingLife, along from them, didn’t receive the email and the receptionist only knew about the event as she saw it herself on FB and saw the fairy around Richmond, as had a couple of customers in the waiting room. One business that did embrace the idea was the Wooden Spoon Café which, with

a jar of buttons donated by Stitchcraft, encouraged a ‘buy a cup of coffee for someone else,’ scheme with their customers. Hamish and Fletchers bought cheesecakes and took them to local retirement homes. Even some high-profile businesses like Harcourts didn’t receive the emails and the SPCA missed out as well. Wet and Forget are obviously plugged in as they received the email, saw the information on other businesses FB page, saw the fairy and saw the info on Love Richmond FB page. None of the stores changed their work practices as they all give ‘good customer service.’ Several businesses saw the email but took no action and didn’t get involved.

coffee and the food stalls also contributed substantially to the fundraising activities. In all, the funds raised on the day are just more than $9,500 and will directly benefit the Cancer Society of NZ, a worthwhile cause. This year is the 3rd year the Nelson Branch of the Club has organised the Rally. “In short, for just one day, the event was a local motoring enthusiasts mecca. A wonderful display of vehicles from pre-WWI through to the late 1980’s, all shiny and gleaming,”

says Geoff Golding, from VCC. Rosie and John Herd are Wakefield residents and the couple had two of their collection on display; a Model A Ford and a Ford homebuilt speedster which John built from scratch. “I found a photo on the internet of the speedster and thought, ‘I can copy that’, so that’s what I did, I built the whole thing, I made the entire body myself,” says John. He uses the roadster as a daily run-around but says the draw to vintage cars is that they are “just fun”.

Bruno and Susan: new Waimea Weekly editorial staff Staff Reporter Bruno Saia is a Brazilian journalist who came to New Zealand in search of a new lifestyle and that’s what he has found at the Waimea Weekly newspaper. “I am doing what I am experienced in and what I love to do”, he says. He studied journalism in Brazil and his career started in 2004 as a reporter at the university’s radio station. After graduation he moved to São Paulo, the biggest city in South America, where he started a job at a specialised cosmetics business magazine. At the same time, he was part of the editorial staff of the sports section at ‘O Estado de São Paulo’, one of the most traditional newspapers in the country. After a while, he went to ‘Agora São Paulo’, one of the most popular Brazilian newspapers, where he worked in the economics section, specialising in writing articles about working relationships. His experience in a big city opened the doors to Bruno when he decided to move to a much smaller town where he spent

most of his childhood. At the local newspaper ‘O Imparcial’ he had some of the most important experiences in his career as a reporter. He wrote about the people, sports, politics, economics and he specialised in crime stories. All those subjects required great responsibility and lots of hard work. He did this for three years. Bruno arrived in New Zealand in April and instantly fell in love with the place and the people. He is now one of the reporters at the Waimea Weekly. “Writing in English instead of Portuguese, as I did in Brazil, is a big challenge, but I’ll do my best to tell all the stories about the people in this amazing community”, he says. His work partner is the reporter Susan Johnson, who also chose for a career change. Susan trained as a nurse in Christchurch, ‘hundreds of years ago’ before her love of travel took her overseas, first to the North Island ‘in those days that counted as overseas’, Sydney and on to the UK which became her base to explore Europe. “I was appalling bad at speaking a foreign language so had to live
in England, I learnt to say ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’ and ‘how much’ in 3 different languages, that seemed to get me by.” A hint of what was to come was 8 years as health nurse at a newspaper printing company in Docklands, London, “I could write a book about my time there, one memorable moment, trying to find the top of a finger in the press hall so the surgeon could re-attach it. Yes, I found it and yes, it was stitched back on.”, says Susan. From there Susan went into private practice, apparently working in some very special places but as she signed the Official Secrets Act she can’t tell us about it. “I might write another book about it though”, she says. About four years ago she returned home and spent some time travelling around the country looking for the right job and the right place to live, ‘dog grooming on the Coromandel Coast, retail in Tauranga, until it all fell into place in the best place on earth.’ Susan likes to know all about each member of ther community and telling their stories is what she loves the most.
Gifts for Dad this Father’s Day

Drawings and compliments for Father’s Day at the Mall Bruno Saia Everyone who passes through the corridor which leads to the toilets at Richmond’s Mall will notice some beautiful drawings hanging on the wall. They are portraits of fathers made by Henley Primary School children. “Richmond Mall had this big white hoarding in the corridor and we needed something to brighten it up,” says Belinda de Clercq, Richmond Mall Centre Manager. “We approached Henley Primary School to see if they would like to do some portraits of local dads which ties in with Father’s Day coming up,” she says. According to Belinda, Donna Elkington is the teacher who initiated the project at the school. “She was totally supportive and in return for the lovely drawings Richmond Mall gave them $500 of vouchers”, says Belinda. Donna was delighted with the result. “They did such a good job,” she says. Henley student, 6-year old Emme Ching, chose some words to be highlighted in

Sporty, strong, kind, funny, fun to be with, were the ones she chose, but she was too shy to explain why. Her teacher Donna helped with that. “In our class, we’ve been writing compliments for each other and today was Emme’s turn to have the compliments written
about her and we did the same for their dads,” she says. Glenn Ching is Emme’s father and he hadn’t seen the portrait until last Thursday. “It’s the first time I’ve seen it, so I’m quite excited. When I first heard it was in the toilet corridor, I thought it was a bit weird, but when you think
about it you realise it makes a good change,” Glenn says. “It lightens the place up, and you see how many people stop. It’s quite surprising. It’s good because hanging the drawings at school, parents might see them, but here everyone does”. The school intends to buy new games with the vouchers.
The Heart Foundation is holding a free community information session for people living with heart disease to understand ‘Oral health and the heart’. This event will be held on Monday, 2 September, 2019, at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village, Covent Drive, Stoke, from 10:30am to 12pm. Local dental surgeon Ken Joyes will lead this session, and afterwards there will be plenty of time to ask questions. Families and support people are welcome. It’s increasingly common to hear that oral health is vital for our overall health. Studies have shown that heart disease and oral health are connected by the spread of bacteria from your mouth, to other parts of your body, through the bloodstream. “New Zealanders need to be proactive about their oral health, to protect themselves from any potential risk of heart disease in future,” says Averil West, Heart Foundation Nelson Marlborough Heart Health Advocate. The Heart Foundation is New Zealand’s leading independent funder of heart research and, since 1968, has funded more than $70 million. You can register for this free session by contacting Averil West on 03 545 7112, or email averilw@heartfoundation.org.nz.

More than 100 ukulele players got together this weekend for workshops and musical concerts at the Plinkers Band Camp 2019 at Nelson Lakes. “This year’s Band Camp has been
the biggest yet and we had people from Kaikoura, New Plymouth, Mapua, Blenheim and Picton,” says Karen Brown from the Plinkers. “It started just as a weekend retreat for Plinkers, but as it was growing, we’ve had more people from outside who came to join us, and it is nice to meet those
other people.” The Plinkers is a social ukulele group that started in 2006. “We were a group of people who had just learned how to play the ukulele and wanted to get together weekly and jam,” Karen says. The first Band Camp was in 2008 and 27 people took part. “We stayed at the Red Deer
Lodge, here at the lakes but we had to find a new venue and someone had suggested the Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre. It’s perfect for our needs and what I most like about it is that everyone is dining together, and everyone is in the same rooms and getting to know each other,” she says.
The group now has more than 300 members registered at their mailing list. Between 50 and 70 of them get together to play the ukulele and sing every Sunday at the Ocean Lodge (20 Muritai St, Tahunanui), in Nelson. During winter, it is from 3pm to 5pm, and in summer it runs from 4pm to 6pm.
When former deputy head boy at Waimea College, Brendon Oakley, was told he was being awarded a top New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) honour he had one request – that his family be able to attend the presentation. That’s because Commander Oakley credits the team that has supported him so closely throughout his military career – his wife Lisa, son Lukas, and twin daughters Brooklyn and Ruby – as a huge reason he has been able to succeed in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and NZDF. Commander Oakley, who has recently returned with his family to live in Nelson, received the Defence Meritorious Service Medal, which is awarded for exceptionally meritorious service by a member of the NZDF. His citation pointed first to his contribution from 2013-2016 as Commander of the NZDF Support Unit (South

He who arrived in Nelson 175 years ago to meet is wearing a traditional German this weekend to share photos and stories. Karel smoking cap. remembers her mother-in-law telling her children to never forget the three Lankow children buried in unmarked graves in Hope. The children died of diphtheria and she would like the people of Hope to know that those children lie there and that they are not forgotten. When Karel Wallace put the invitation out she not only received replies from around New Zealand but from Australia and China as well. She hoped for 100 people but has ended up with 150 and still has a few more days to go before the event this weekend. Places for the dinner are full but everyone is welcome to attend the day-time events. On Saturday, relatives will set up tables with family trees and photos. There will be a formal welcome and the story of the Skiold and other pioneer families will be told. Significant sites will be visited, such as the Millennium Wall in Nelson on the seaside of Wakefield Quay. There is a plaque with a list of the passengers who arrived in New Zealand from 1841 to 1850, which includes the Skiolds. A remembrance service for the soldiers killed in action or service will also be held. Registration for the afternoon programmes can be taken on the day for interested locals at $25 per

From 07/08/19 The fundraiser barbecue organised by Westmeat staff last Saturday to gather money for Emma’s Guyer family was a great success. The smiley 12-year old girl is fighting against a tumour in her brain and, after winning a colouring contest, she was recognised by the Westmeat team who decided to set up the barbecue. According to Kate Pullar, Westmeat’s shop manager, they raised over $400 to pass on to Emma and her family. “I would like to thank everyone who was able to come along on Saturday to support Emma and the people who
weren’t able to make it on the day but dropped off donations earlier in the week. Also, thank you to my staff who came in to help on their day off. It was really nice to have Emma with us for the BBQ. She is such an inspirational young lady. We are pleased to have raised all this amount to pass on to her,” she says. If you are also keen to help Emma, her Givealittle page is still available. The donations will be used to fulfill Emma’s dreams and desires, plus alternative treatments. If you have an end to one of our stories contact Bruno on bruno@ waimeaweekly.co.nz

The fundraising for the MenzShed’s AED (Automated External Defibrillator) got a much needed boost this week from the Richmond Rotary. When Kevin Cross, member of the Rotary Club, read about the effects of the MenzShed in the Waimea Weekly he knew it was a worthy cause for the Rotary to support. The donation will go towards the $2,500 that the MenzShed need to buy their

Kevin Cross from Rotary presents Alan Kissell with a cheque.
In last week’s story about the hygiene kits being supplied to overseas women, we were supplied with the wrong information. The correct version is that TDC granted the group $1500 towards their fundraising, and local electrician and rotary member Rowan Dron represented that organisation as the sponsors of the cotton material used- also he is not married to Debra Gibbs as stated. Our apologies for reprinting the wrong info. If you would like to help this worthy cause then please phone Debra 03 544 5024.

Over $5m was spent pumping nitrogen into the mine and putting men, robots and cameras into the drift. A comprehensive 800 page report in 2015 concluded recovery of the men could not be done within the new safety laws. It was heart breaking telling the families. They initially accepted the advice and requested the Government invest $12m in a new Paparoa and Pike 29 Great Walk. I got Cabinet agreement and it opens on 1 December this year. Winston Peters, Labour and the Greens cynically exploited the families’ disappointment, insisting the men’s remains could be safely recovered. Peters insisted he would

reacted angrily to mining journalist, Gerry Morris for exposing their intention to bypass the mine safety regulations. He also called the government out on making a political football of this tragedy. Pike River Recovery and Justice Minister Andrew Little belittled Mr Morris in Parliament last Thursday. Their dispute escalated on Friday with the Minister complaining to police and Mr Morris’s home being visited late that night by armed police. My advice to Government is don’t shoot the messenger. The Royal Commission had it right when they concluded we best respect the 29 men by passing and complying with improved safety laws. Advt.

go into the mine himself. Jacinda Ardern explicitly promised in the Leader’s debate “We’ve got to deliver to those families their loved ones”. The difference from John Key was that by then detailed safety reports said it could not be done. The new Government created the Pike River Recovery Agency. It has ruled out going beyond the drift to the mine workings where the Royal Commission concluded the men are. It is also unlikely any significant new evidence will be found noting the Royal Commission concluded the explosion was initiated well beyond the drift. $36m is being spent on this political charade. It specifically criticised the single means of exit. Our Government implemented its recommendations with a new Health and Safety at Work Act (2015), new mining regulations and the new agency, Worksafe NZ. These new laws rightly now require two means of exit from a mine and better ventilation. Prime Minister John Key promised to recover the men in the days following the tragedy. Everything possible was done to achieve this.

One of the ways the members of the MenzShed are rasing funds is from selling raffle tickets. The members have made a beautifully crafted toy plane with working propellor, dashboard, and it’s large enough for a small child to sit in. Tickets are $5 each and are available from the MenzShed and the Waimea Weekly offices.
It was revealed last week that the Government intends exempting itself from the new workplace safety laws and mining regulations put in place following the Pike River Mine tragedy. This is ironically to enable their re-entry project. This is a ridiculous situation where politics is over-riding common sense. The Pike River Mine exploded on 19 November 2010. Two men in the 2.3 km tunnel to the mine known as ‘the drift’ survived. The remaining 29 men in the mine workings perished. The mine repeatedly exploded in the days that followed. We love living and raising our family in Tasman with our region’s enviable access to the natural environment. Economic vitality and environmental sustainability are crucial to Tasman’s future. Developing our diverse economy and communities while meeting the challenges around water quality, biodiversity, an aging population and changing climate will be priorities. Collaboration and constructive relationships with landowners, businesses, Iwi, Government and non-government organisations will be essential to achieve sustainable outcomes. Council’s core role will remain investing in new and improved infrastructure, managing the region’s natural resources, providing efficient and customer-focused services and supporting recreational facilities and activities. Delivering within the Council’s rate and debt limits will require strong leadership and difficult decisions. Prioritising the many demands across the community will not be easy. Having over twenty years of governance experience in business, community organisations and on Council, I’m committed to working collectively to tackle the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities for our region. I positive about the future and seek your support to continue providing practical, hardworking and accessible representation as your Mayor. Ph 03 542 3849 / timbking4@gmail.com / timking.co.nz Being local I “Care for People” in our region. I am Director of MediMax Ambulance Service and an Intensive Care Paramedic and Registered Nurse. I have an extensive working network throughout the District and a strong sense of what the people of Tasman want from their council. I will bring strong Leadership and Commercial Acumen to the Council and its $115 million business, providing a beacon for a better future. I will listen to concerns and encourage more ratepayers participation and respect their opinion. The “secret” Council (workshops) from which the public are excluded, MUST BE STOPPED. I will open these for ratepayers to attend. You, the ratepayers, are paying the bills and therefore entitled to hear the discussions. We Must Do Better. Tasman has one of the highest rates and reticulated water charges in the country. We need Council to bulk buy and subsidise domestic rainwater storage tanks for Water conservation. We also need to build a series of weirs in the Waimea River for water storage to enable helicopter firefighting. Encouraging growth to business and employment opportunities, plus protecting our unique ecological environment, are paramount. I thank you for your support. Born and bred right here in the Tasman District. Married to Jody, together with daughter Tiegan and son Brodie, we are proud to call Tasman home. Having worked across Councils for the past 20 years I understand the role, responsibilities and the limitations of the Mayor. The Mayor is not a dictator, nor the sole instigator of policy and direction. The Mayor is one of 14 elected members, the presiding member of Council, spokesperson and figurehead. An effective Mayor must be able to build an effective governance team that leads strategy and direction, sets the tone and culture of Council and role models positive community engagement. As Mayor I offer an open-mind, a high level of integrity and a commitment to transparency. Working with communities across the Top of the South for the past 30 years, my success within the not-for-profit sector has demanded of me a high level of business acumen, the ability to negotiate significant contracts with multiple councils, understand central government complexities, and work with limited or challenging budgets, whilst being subjected to a high level of public scrutiny. I understand the role of governance and have proven experience as an effective chair.

The Tasman District is a thriving, diverse, and unique part of New Zealand and Tasman District Council is responsible for improving the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of our communities. To do that, it’s important that the decision makers sitting around the Council table both reflect the community they serve and also have the skills and capabilities to undertake the role expected of them. Tasman District Council is an operation with assets of $1.5b and expenditure of $120m pa. As a governing body, it’s essential that there is the expertise sitting around the Council Table to fully understand the financials and be able to assess and make sense of complex information. We need to balance the needs of current and future communities and sometimes these needs differ. To understand the impacts of these tradeoffs, Councillors needs to be connected to their communities. I have the experience, skills, passion, connection and commitment to fully perform the Council role. Make your vote count.

tasman district cOUncil meet the candidates
Living in Appleby operating Greenwood Park, I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact of the lack of central government funding for our roads and infrastructure in our region. This is impacting on our safety and is causing our roads to be clogged up every morning and evening. I have a vision for a reliable and timely public transport. We need a transport network that links Motueka and Mapua to Richmond as well as linking Wakefield and Brightwater to Richmond. I am running for council because there are some serious issues around debt, infrastructure and under-resourcing of our region by central government that needs to be dealt with over the next 3 years. I’m an energetic, hard working advocate with a common-sense approach for dealing with important issues like roading, water, environmental issues, housing and well-being, as these will impact on the future growth and prosperity of our region. The role of Councillor must be people-centric! I’ll strive to ensure that all decisions I make are for the betterment of all ratepayers. If you want a councillor who will hold to a common-sense approach, focus on financial responsibility and hold to sustainability of environmental and economic needs then tick Hayden Stevenson for Moutere - Waimea Ward.
Waimea Dam, whether you are for or against it no longer matters, what matters is that we don’t want any surprises, delays or cost over-runs. What we really want is proficient project management with transparency and accountability. If the Waimea Dam is completed with the same level of efficiency as the Bateup Road upgrade project, it will be nearing completion in May 2027 and no-one would be able to confirm whether it was on budget or not and what the final cost would be and have an unacceptable list of defects. Even with Waimea Water Ltd. being responsible for managing the construction, operation and maintenance of the dam, this is by no means an excuse for TDC to keep the project at arm’s length but should be actively involved in the project in an oversight capacity to protect its interests, otherwise it risk passing on the cost of delays and over-runs to ratepayers and users of TDC services. I run my own IT business and I have experience in project management as well as broader experience working in variety of jobs, roles and industries, and believe that I have a good ability to communicate and take on board concerns of others.
Cr Wensley has been appointed to key roles in her term at council. She has driven strategic change for the benefit of this community, bringing the youth voice to council, spearheading the new age-friendly policy, and promoting public transport and safe walking and cycling. She seeks re-election to continue to make a positive change and to bring your voice to council. Dana’s priorities: “We need to increase transparency at council, encourage small affordable housing options, solve long-term transport issues, protect fertile productive land on the Waimea Plains, promote accessible spaces and safe walking and cycling, and create resilient communities that respond to effects of climate change.” Born and raised in Motueka, Dana returned 6 years ago to raise her family. She has a background in health law, and in addition to council work she serves on the National Ethics Advisory Committee (a Ministerial Appointment) and as a director on the Copyright Licensing Board. Her election pledge? “I will work hard for you. Every decision I make, I engage with my community to bring the community perspective to the council table.” Find out more: www.tasmanissues.net or contact danawensley@xtra.co.nz
While living in Tasman for 30 plus years, working in contracting from Mangarakau to St Arnaud, I have gained an understanding of the different communities and their needs. My experience has been in sewerage, stormwater, building/general earthworks, forestry, river control, dam and road construction, both as an employer and employee. The main priority is the dam debacle. The exorbitant ratepayers financial responsibility for minimal usable water is unacceptable. Rate increases are unjustifiable and are a direct result of mismanaged growth. Development should not be subsidized by ratepayers. This can be fixed. Accountability. While TDC have a lot of good staff, the same ones are letting the side down with incompetence bordering on dishonesty. Fixable, but not by fining yourself. An expectation of excellence, accuracy and honesty needs to be the norm. We need to value and respect the environment in all our decisions while being practical and proactive with our approach. I support STV with the expectation of greater acknowledgement of our community input by not ignoring submissions Delays, mistakes and incompetence are inhibiting this district from fulfilling its potential. I believe I have the skills, knowledge, drive and ability to make positive changes for the good of the region.
Julie Nevin is a voice for our natural world and for every generation. She says that when Tasman District Council invests in our community’s future, they are navigating our way forward within global environmental changes which impact us all. “Our world - the rivers, oceans, land and climate that are the foundation of everything we have - needs us to have courage now. We need to do things differently. This is my promise: I will stand firm in Council for the change we need.” She will keep Council’s focus on building healthy ecosystems and resilient communities, encouraging innovative environmental solutions to create a cleaner, healthier, safer region. She will advocate for community-centred sustainable development, for a diverse, low-carbon, resource-efficient economy, and for bringing business, Council and communities together to accelerate this work. A former teacher, a psychology graduate and environmental issues student, and a mother, she feels strongly that “it’s time to create a Tasman that will thrive through our children’s lifetimes and beyond.” She invites you to join in the community conversations that she is facilitating across the Moutere-Waimea Ward throughout September to share your ideas about sustainability and resilience in your community: see julienevin.weebly.com.
I am standing again because I have the time and the dedication to help provide a sustainable future for Tasman. As we confront climate change, we need to put measures in place to protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint. We owe this to future generations. Being an incumbent councillor gives me a depth of understanding of what is required to make Tasman an enjoyable place to live and work. Past community positions include Network Tasman Trust, Tasman Environmental Trust, and other local and national bodies. I currently chair Waimea Village Ltd. My time in business included managing Tuffnell Plumbing, establishing a hire company, and as a project manager for a national body. I offer a wealth of know-how, local body and commercial experience, and a passion for our area to help develop affordable, sustainable growth. A vote for Trevor is a vote for a council where practicality, experience and common sense will prevail.
I am seeking your support to represent the Richmond Ward on the Tasman District Council. It has been a privilege to be your representative on the Council for the last three years and we have achieved a number of projects for Richmond. The Queen Street upgrade, a Saxton velodrome at Saxton Field and improved stormwater management are examples. It is always a balance on Council to provide the infrastructure required for our residents and to keep rates increases to a minimum. I am very aware of the cost of rates and the impact this has on families and our residents in particular those with fixed incomes. I have a good understanding of central and local government processes and one of the key issues in our immediate future is to lobby central government to address our growing traffic congestion problems on Salisbury Road roundabout and Gladstone Road/Lower Queen Street lights. It would be an honour to represent your interests on council again. People have asked me who I support for Mayor, I am supporting Tim King as he is the only credible candidate. Kit Maling for Council.

Daffodil Day 2019 symbolises hope for 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer. Since 1990, this iconic event has inspired people to come and support the Cancer Society’s work, while also raising awareness of cancer. This year Daffodil Day will be held on Friday, August 30th, and Saturday, August 31st. Peoples donations will go towards scientific research into the causes and treatments for all types of cancer, as well as providing a range of support services, awareness campaigns and programmes. The Nelson and Tasman Cancer Society focuses primarily on enhancing patient and family support systems; improving community well-being through health promotion (e.g. Smokefree, Sunsmart); providing information and resourc-
es for the local medical community and general public and networking. It also organises support groups such as ‘Survivors and Thrivers.’ Quoting a local breast cancer survivor: “I know that getting a cancer diagnosis can be devastating news for the individual and the family. Early detection is important. People shouldn’t be afraid to take that first step to get a lump checked or to go to the doctor and discuss pain or discomfort. The Cancer Society provides crucial information, support, counselling and transport to treatment. Without them a cancer diagnosis would be a much more lonely and difficult place to be. I am thankful for the support I received and for the assistance the Cancer Society continues to provide to so many in this community.”

Support Daffodil Day Authorised by Dana Wensley, 9 Langdale Drive, Richmond
Diana settles into her comfortable couch and casts an approving eye over her serviced apartment at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke. She’s been here just on a month, but already the apartment looks and feels like home. She says she is looking forward to receiving her new Lay-Z-Boy chair to complete the furniture. She loves the sunny aspect and the charming garden outlook. Diana lived in Auckland for many years and jumped at the opportunity when her daughter, Sally, suggested she move to Nelson. When she first moved to the village six years ago, a townhouse was just what she wanted, and together they decided Ernest Rutherford was the place to be. However, in more recent times Diana and her family decided a little more assistance would be helpful and they discussed her moving to a serviced apartment in the village centre. Her daughter Sally found there was one immediately available. “Mum you’ll love it,” she said. “It’s sunny with a nice outlook and it’s on the ground floor. I didn’t hesitate,” said Diana. “The transition from the moment Diana made the decision to move, through to the move being completed, was made that much simpler by the wonderful, helpful staff, who made it quite clear that they were there to assist. She has settled into her new location and routine extremely well and is very happy,” says Sally. Diana has been able to choose the living option that is right for her. She still enjoys her independence and drives to the local shops and has loads of interests outside of her life at the village. “My apartment is continually warm. I have never felt cold here.” Diana’s serviced apartment has a spacious separate bedroom which opens into an ensuite with underfloor heating and the apartment has its own heating all included in her fixed weekly fee. Also included is the main meal of the day, a Delicious home cooked meal with three choices including a vegetarian option.
Diana enjoys life in her serviced apartment at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village Diana makes her own breakfast and evening meal in her kitchenette and enjoys the extra assistance of having her bed linen laundered weekly, along with fresh towels daily. She also has her apartment cleaned and has 24-hour village monitored emergency call alarms, giving her and her family peace of mind knowing help is close at hand, if she ever needs it. She knows that if in the future she requires it, there are further care options available in her serviced apartment that include personal care right through to resthome-level care. Diana enjoys board games like Rummikub and is a Mahjong fan. She finds plenty of players within the village. In fact,
they’ve recently added an extra evening game once week! Previously Diana would never have gone out in the evenings but now she says, “It’s fantastic! You just whip up the hall and you’re there.” She’s knows she can join in the exclusive Ryman Triple A exercise classes and is considering going along. She thinks it would help with her balance and confidence walking. The advantage of Ryman’s Engage activities programme is that Diana can pick and choose activities she is interested in from the monthly calendar of events. Ernest Rutherford has stunning landscaped gardens for walks around the
village and also features an all-weather bowling green, heated indoor swimming pool, gym, library, hairdresser and beauty salon. Residents can enjoy watching a movie in the theatre, go along to happy hour, or simply meet up with friends or family in one of the lounges or the gorgeous indoor garden atrium. Diana’s move to her serviced apartment for a little more assistance has also given her more freedom to do the things she wants to do. She is pleased that she was able to make the move when she chose to. “It’s been a really good move and the staff are marvellous – nothing’s a trouble.”

Brightwater School planting project
Two weeks ago Brightwater School performed a Karakia to bless the earth before planting their new orchard. The trees have been funded by $300 from the Tasman District Council for water reductions made during the drought. The whole school was involved, singing waiata while the children (pictured) prepared the soil. The school believes this is a very special occasion for the students and the community as it celebrates their cultural heritage and the significant connection to the whenua (land) on which their school is located. All activities are aimed at meeting the needs of the children, giving them the opportunity to extend their learning and to provide them with a wide range of educational experiences.

Local primary school students take to the stage of Motueka’s Town Hall in the coming weeks with a range of dance, drama and music. This year’s MASSIVE, which stands for ‘Motueka Arts Show from Schools Incorporating a Variety of Entertainment’, is a collaboration of 11 local primary schools, showcasing their abundance of talent. This year’s theme, ‘Discovery’ allows for a vast range of creative ideas that are sure to entertain. “It is literally a massive task to go from brainstorming ideas with a class to have a complete and practiced performance for a broader audience, but such undertakings incorporate most, if not all, of a school’s values, key competencies and curriculum areas, so the learning experience is also huge and rewarding”, says Paul Shand, principal at Mahana School. Some creative direction with the 2019’s theme includes Mapua School donning army fatigues and providing aliens to explore, ‘What is actually in Area 51?’ Mahana
School’s focus will be, ‘How Time Flies’, with the audience learning a little about the past, present, and ourselves. Riwaka will lead you on discovery into an alternate universe with underlying themes of discovering things about us. Tickets are at $10 and are already available at participating schools and will be at Whitwells on High Street from 9th September. There will be door sales but it is highly recommended that you purchase beforehand so as not to miss out. Schools have been split into two groups performing on two different dates, each with a matinee and evening show. Showtimes and performing schools are: Tuesday, 17th September, Motueka Town Hall, 3:30pm and 7:00pm is Group 1: Dovedale, Lower Moutere, Mahana, Motueka South, Parklands and Saint Peter Chanel Schools. Thursday, 19th September, Motueka Town Hall, 3:30pm and 7:00pm is Group 2: Brooklyn, Mapua, Riwaka, Tasman and Upper Moutere Schools.

Referees sub-association’s involvement in rugby began in 1870 when Nelson College took on Nelson Football Club in New Zealand’s first ever competitive rugby game. Since then, there have been many excellent referees over the years, some of which have officiated on a national and international level. Today, our region’s referees give up their Saturday’s so the players, coaches and parents can all enjoy theirs. When the whistle blows, and the ball is kicked, they are right in the thick of it, helping to grow the game. In his role as the Referee Education Office for the Tasman Rugby Union, Dave Paterson is keen to continue to build on the positivity and respect for referees he believes exists in our region. “We’re relatively lucky here, but in some regions referees have been physically

But let’s face it – referees at club level are all volunteers doing their very best, but even the best refs in the world makes mistakes.” ‘We’re only human,’ after all… “People need to understand that referees are as much a part of the game as the players

them, there wouldn’t be a game.” Dave says referees have to make calls and it’s just how they see it at the time.
Trained, competent refs Wanderer’s Rugby Club Director of Sports, Marty Davis, says he’s never witnessed a game in Nelson where he thinks the referees are not as competent as the players. “The refs are at the same level and grading as the players so it’s illogical to expect to get international referees when playing at a low level.” Marty says referees train to fulfil their roles and it’s beholding on everybody to respect that. “People who watch television think they understand what’s going on, but it doesn’t match the reality of the laws. They’ll make comments from the side lines which becomes infectious – someone says something out of line, then someone tends to pick up

We want people to understand that referees, players and coaches are all in this together – it’s a partnership. The Tasman Mako are doing fantastically well because they are really focussed on the game. They’re not worried about the referees; they just get stuck in and get the job done. Mako maul Manawatu in Marlborough Peter Jones If securing five points while exploring their depth of talent was Tasman’s objective at Lansdowne Park on Saturday, the afternoon was an unqualified success. Not only did they over-run the Manawatu Turbos 64-3, they also showed that there is a rich vein of ability running right through the squad, enough to cover the ups-and-downs of an NPC season. Players such as hooker Hugh Roach, flanker Jacob Norris, midfielder Tim O’Malley, wingers Tima Faingaanuku and Jamie Spowart were given a starting opportunity and seized their moment eagerly. Frontrowers Sam Moli and Isaac Salmon, new halfback Uchida Keisuke, plus utility back Fetuli Paea, grabbed big
minutes off the bench, their input providing the second half momentum that saw five more tries added to the home side’s tally. Mako co-head coach Andrew Goodman said one of the best things to have come out of the match was the input of lesserutilised players. “It was good to see a couple of boys have their first games [for the Mako] plus a couple of guys who hadn’t played many minutes this year, so it was great to build that depth in our squad heading into a busy part of the season.” A totally new face for Mako fans to identify with was second half replacement Keisuke, a 22-cap Japanese international. He looked sharp and hungry for work, maintaining the speed of the game while not afraid to have a snipe around
Richmond F45 team. Back Row: Deborah Lott, Amy Finch, Amy Cunningham, Harriet Ogilvie, Kathleen Thornalley, Sarah Steele, Rebekah Sheppard, MacKenzie Orange. Front Row: Kat Jones, Amanda Springer, Maddison Springer, Marjolein Edwards, Caitlin Roberts.

the breakdown. “He is going to be a valuable addition to our squad,” suggested Goodman. The All Blacks’ squad is named on Wednesday, meaning there is a chance the Mako could lose a player or two to international duty, with Jordan Taufua also a possibility to be picked up by Samoa. Goodman is unfazed by the possible disruption. “We’ll just wait and see what happens. Obviously, we have our fingers crossed that the boys make those teams, we’ll celebrate any success we get with any of our boys making those [World
Cup squads.” Sunday’s comprehensive victory also underlined the growing reputation of Lansdowne Park as an increasingly tough venue to beat the home side at. Tasman have now won nine in a row in Blenheim since losing to Auckland in September 2015, creating something of a “Fortress Mako” in the eastern side of the region. “That’s awesome,” said Goodman. “It’s great to see the crowd out today, supporting the team, and I’m glad the boys put on a good show for them.” Next up is Taranaki, 4.35pm next Sunday in New Plymouth.
Richmond F45 is out after exciting game Kathleen Thornalley Prices started as they meant to go on, scoring three consecutive goals out of the starting blocks against Richmond F45 at Saxton stadium on Thursday night. Both teams expended every ounce of energy and determination in their bid for a semifinals spot in what was a clean and tightly-contested game. Sarah Steele made herself
known to Prices shooters early in the piece, stealing two interceptions to bring Richmond F45 back into the game. Tia van Diepen and Harriet Ogilvie settled well, forming a solid combination in the shooting circle. Prices’ Chelsea Reed made beautiful space for her younger shooters, ending the quarter 13 (Prices) 10 (Richmond F45). Once again Prices came out firing into the second quarter

Lauren Chaney shot with precision for Prices and will be pleased with her performance. Richmond Football youth teams results
Wanderers Sports Club Report
With only a couple of weeks left of regular football, the Richmond youth teams recorded 1 win, 2 losses, 1 draw and a bye on Saturday and the seniors had 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws. Unfortunately, the team from Blenheim who had entered the Men’s 1st Division Top of the South rounds pulled out last week, so it’s the end of the season for the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st team for 2019, and the senior women’s division finished last week. The Fresh Choice Richmond 2nd team went down 5 – 1 to FC Nelson Locomotive, a 1 – 1 draw between the Hornbills 2nd team and Motueka keeps the Richmond side in the running for the league title, the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle 3rd div team also still have a chance for a title with their 2 – 1 win over FC Nelson, the Global Wings Travel Hornbills drew 2 – 2 with their Motueka opponents, the Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags had a great 3 – 0 win over FC Nelson Masters, and the Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans beat Wakefield 4 – 0. The club still has chances to win the 2nd and 3rd division league titles, as well as a couple of league cups.
Wanderers senior players honoured by Kirkpatrick Former All Black Ian Kirkpatrick was the guest speaker at the Wanderers Sports Club annual prize-giving on Saturday and entertained the crowd with his views on the current game at all levels, and the challenges faced if the rugby is to survive into the future. An All Black from 1967 to 1977, playing in 113 games including 39 tests, ‘Kirky’ provided an excellent comparison between the amateur and professional eras. Away from home on various tours between two months or three months at a time, leaving his brothers to run the farm in his absence, was wastly from today, without consideration for the obvious financial benefits existing now. Concussion and player safety, plus the emphasis on defence by many teams and its effect on the game today, were all topics addressed, with advice offered to young players who wish to play at the higher levels. Questions from the floor elicited comments and stories on best performances and enforcers. Wanderers have Sione Havili and Ryan Coxon in the Mako, Amelia Hammett and Tamara Silcock in the Mako Farah Palmer Cup squad, and Zyon Holo, Chris Hala’uifa, Jake Goeddert and Apatone Vaka in the Mako under-19s, and Ian’s advice was well received and acknowledged by captain Fletcher Matthews in his speech when making the gift presentation at the conclusion of the evening. In his opening speech, Club President Grant Blanchett had acknowledged the success of each senior team in qualifying for the semifinals. Getting the division one, division
Captain of the Wanderers seniors Fletcher Matthews Ethan Johnston receiving the Sports Person of presenting Ian with a ‘thank you’ for the night’s chat. the Year from ex All Black, Ian Kirkpatrick. two and the women’s team in the final four was a pleasing outcome from the club’s perspective and augurs well for the future. With 16 players in the senior squad under the age of 22 and with the division two team currently playing four boys under 18, the injection of youth into the club this season has been particularly satisfying when combined with the subsequent performances. Acknowledgement and thanks were expressed to all coaches and managers for contributing to the success. Charlie Taylor, Club Patron and chief executive of Taylors Contractors Ltd, the principal sponsor of Wanderers Sports Club, made the presentations to the Women’s team where Brittany Harrington received most improved player; Amanda Sim and Tamar Silcock were joint recipients of the coach and manager’s plate. Amelia Hammett was announced
as the MVP for 2019. Coaches Ian Biggs and Wayne Batemen thanked the team for the considerable progress made during the season. Following dinner, the division two team awards were made by The Loggers Shop manager Tom Simpson, representing Christine and Dale Ewers for major sponsor Moutere Logging. He was assisted by division two coaches Steve Leef and Grant Blanchett. Cameron King was acknowledged as the most promising under-18 player in the club. The Bevan Coleman Cup for most dedicated player went to Conrad Malietoa, with trophy for most improved going to Theo Moore. The Travellers Rest Tackling Cup went to Sean Kingand while the division two player of the year was Gianni Bertacco. The Div 2 team won the trophy for most points in the first round and were unfortunate in losing to
only one team during the entire season. Darrin Barr, Sales manager for Total Oil, another major sponsor, presented the trophies and awards to the division one team, assisted by coach Glenn Grant. A new trophy was introduced this year in recognition of the youth of the team and eleven new players to the club and the inaugural recipient of the Rookie of the Year was Chris Hala’ufia. The most improved award went to Josh Moorhouse and the MVP 321 Cup was won by Will Hamilton. The trophy for the best tackler was awarded to Nino Peniamina and the Wanderers Cup for the senior player of the year went to Daniel McLauchclan. Kirkpatrick made the Wanderers Club presentations assisted by the president and the first award for Management Committee services was made to Jo Leef and Jo Blanchett.
Glenn Grant and Peter Taylor, the division one coaches, received the Coaches of the Year award, the women’s team were adjudged the best dressed team and the Waimea Contract Carriers Sports Personality of the Year went to Frazer Lochhead in recognition of his sterling work during the year despite the extremely challenging position he and his family found themselves in following the February fires. The Randle Distributors Sports Person of the Year, in recognition of dedication, club loyalty, resilience and integrity, went to Ethan Johnston who earlier in the season played his 150th game for the club. He was an extremely popular winner and entirely appropriate following the comments of Ian Kirkpatrick in his discussions. A final recognition of our various volunteers who help out each week in the kitchen and bar saw Ian present flowers to Susi Taylor, Glenys Davis, Janine Basalaj, Jo Leef, Jo Blanchett, Kathy Irvine, Mel Hardcastle and, most importantly, the club matriarch, Diane Drogemuller for the wonderful and willing work completed during the year, including the outstanding community efforts during the fires. This weekend the junior club will hold their prize-giving which will acknowledge all teams, coaches and managers for the wonderful performances at every level throughout the season, supported by Mako representatives and club officials. Once again Wanderers Sports Club would like to thank all our wonderful sponsors and partners, plus supporters who have enabled and encouraged our teams during this season.

The people of Richmond and Nelson will get the chance to master their trout fishing casting under the watchful eye of international fisherman Tony Entwistle next month. The Nelson Trout Fishing Club will host their annual casting clinic on Sunday, September 15, at Saxton Field. Last year the event attracted over 80 participants, said club president Barry Howell. The event is open to the public and is in its third year with professional fishing guide Tony Entwistle.
for the abatement of any early morning wind. The event will be followed by a river skills day and barbecue on September 22nd at Appleby. On October 13, Tony Entwistle will host a First Steps Course. The river skills and first steps course is for club members, but new members can join the club prior to that date and receive the full benefits of these events. Annual subs are $40 for individuals or $60 for families. Membership of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club will give access to mentoring and lessons in the art of fly fishing, fly tying, club trips,
competitions and access to fishing trips. The club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Fish and Game rooms at 66 Champion Road in Stoke. There is a packed programme for the remainder of the year, finishing with the club Christmas barbecue and fly casting competitions in December. For further enquiries about the casting clinic or joining the Club phone 5476432, email secretary@nelsontroutfishingclub. com or visit them on Facebook or www.nelsontroutfishingclub. com.
25 years of the Dun Run Graeme West Celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Saturday (31 August) is The Dun Run with 325 trail runners heading into ‘the backwoods of Nelson’ and onto its alpine mineral belt. From there it’s down what’s left of the nation’s first railway line to finish at Andrews Farm in the Brook Valley.
First should be there around 11.15am, it’s free to watch, so you’re welcome to give them plenty of encouragement as they cross the line. Competitors are split almost evenly between locals and visitors with a healthy 150/175 female/male ratio. Fifty have opted for the 36km Long Course starting from the Trafalgar Street Bridge at
7.30am while the rest have the “luxury” of a later start from the Maitai Dam for their 25km Original Course journey. Amongst this group will be inaugural 1995 winner, Greg Fraine, tracing his footsteps from his glory days. More information about the Dun Run is available at Nelson Events website: www.nelsonevents.co.nz.

During the 2019 drought in Tasman, many farms throughout the district ran short on stock feed and were forced to buy in feed from outside the region. There is a risk that new pest Variegated thistle plant seeds may have been present in the emergency feed and been inadvertently introduced onto farms. The risk is greatest in areas where stock animals have been fed out hay, which may have contained some viable weed seeds. Pest weed seeds are not as likely to be viable in baleage but there is still a small risk of contamination occurring. Weeds such as thistles, rushes and unpalatable grasses have been introduced onto farms through this way in the past. A recent example is yellow bristle grass, which poses a threat to the dairy industry. This unpalatable grass is thought to have spread to other farms via contaminated hay from infested properties. Forestry block and adjacent farm owners affected by the February Pigeon Valley fires also need to be extra vigilant, as heavy machinery brought in to create fire breaks and clear vegetation has disturbed soil. Pest plants love disturbed soil, and heat generated from the fire can assist with the germination of a number of pest weeds, so keep an eye out for any plant that looks unusual or out of place. With spring just around the corner, land owners should be extra observant and vigilant around feed-out areas. Please look out for new or unusual plants and report any new plant that seems to have “appeared out of nowhere” on your farm to the Tasman District Council biosecurity team. Our biosecurity officers are here to help identify and provide advice and assistance with the removal of any new pest plants on your farm. If you find a plant that you suspect is a new pest weed to your area, please phone the Biosecurity Team on 03 543 8400.
