The talent on display at the Tasman Skatepark Tour just keeps increasing, and the organisers are praising another successful event. The Tasman Skatepark Tour concluded in Richmond on Saturday after five competitions in other corners of the region. Entries were again high for the Richmond leg, which along with Motueka, is the most popular. “There was definitely a resurgence in scootering and we had a lot of the old school skaters back as well,” spokesperson Paul McConachie of the Tasman District Council says. “Spectators showed up in big numbers to support it and the tricks were probably a bit more advanced than last year so overall we SEE PAGE 2

Tasman grows, schools bigger FROM PAGE 1 Nayland College and Nelson College for Girls will start the year with near identical school rolls with the 1081 and 1080 students respectively. While Nelson College for Girls had grown by about “a class’s worth”, according to principal Cathy Ewing, Nayland was the only secondary school in Nelson to have dropped in numbers. Principal Rex Smith admits competition from other schools has played a part in the reduction of about 40 students, with a small number of Year 9 students coming through. “We know we’re doing a good job but maybe we need to find out what parents are looking for and telling our stories better because we have plenty of good ones to tell,” he says.

Because Ministry of Education funding can be determined by the number of students enrolled at a school, Nayland will get proportionally less this year, resulting in four fewer staff. Nelson College for Girls was slowly growing each year, but the number of

girls coming from the Tasman area had not changed. And while Waimea College’s 1530 students can highlight the growth of Richmond, the smallest secondary school in the region can as well. Garin College’s 483 students is a school record, having grown by about “10 or 15” students. “We’ll start with more kids than we’ve ever had before,” says head teacher John Boyce. “We still call ourselves the small school and we still are, everybody knows everybody, but as it gets over 500 we’re going to have to keep that community feel. The good thing is more money, more teachers, more subjects and more flexibility but we need to keep that sense of community that our school is famous for.”

were stoked with how it turned out.” Overall winners in each of the three categories - BMX, skate and scooter - were also crowned. Dylan Boffa-Martin was the victor in the BMX with Reggie McDonald claiming enough points to take out the skate competition, while there was a tie between Mita Timpson and Tuts Kinita in the scooter grade. For winning, Dylan, Reggie and Tuts received a BMX bike, skateboard and scooter depending on which discipline they entered in thanks to event sponsors Village Cycles and Cheapskates. The skatepark tour also visited Brightwater, Tapawera, Takaka and Mapua, and Paul says it was a great opportunity to profile six community facilities that the TDC has invested in. “Even the smaller spots like Tapawera and Brightwater attracted a good number of entries with a lot of them following the tour along.”

Farmers enjoy top season Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Farmers around the NelsonTasman region are making hay while the sun shines as they benefit from one of the best growing seasons on record. Sheep and beef farmers are reporting prolific growth rates for stock after a mild winter and regular rain through spring and early summer. Perfect growing conditions across the region have also been good news for dairy farmers with milk production up on last season. And that represents a dramatic reversal of fortune for farmers who just last summer were facing the prospect of battling through another drought. The dry spell finally came to an end in the autumn and since then the region has been experiencing some of the best farming weather for decades. “It's been quite an exceptional period since the dry spell broke last autumn,” Federated Farmers Nelson provincial president Gavin O'Donnell says. “We have had a mild winter and great spring growth that has continued into the summer and as a result we've seen better livestock performance and dairy production. “It's also allowed farmers to replenish conserved feed stocks

Although lambing percentages were down slightly after last year's dry spell, survival has been exceptionally high resulting a record lambing for the property. “There's been no real pressure since last autumn and we lambed at 154 per cent compared to around 130 or 140 per cent last year,” Ian says. “We have more lambs on the place than we have ever had and weights are the heaviest they have ever been.” Motupipi dairy farmer Evan Baigent says it has been a “brilliant season” with exceptional pasture growth resulting in high milk production and good growth for supplementary

feed. “It's been one of the better seasons in a lifetime of milking cows,” Evan says. “We have had a good production season coinciding with high milk prices so it's been excellent.” Although farmers are benefiting directly from the increased productivity, Ian and Evan point out that it also affects the wider community. Evan says the benefits flow onto agricultural contractors and service industries as well as retailers. Evan says the only thing farmers have been concerned about this season has been the impact of the changeable weather on hay, silage and bale making “It's been a challenging year for haymaking,” contractor Steve Sangster says. “We've had changeable weather and cooler nights so it's been difficult to get the hay dry enough for baling.”

BEFORE AND AFTER: The Wakefield Caffeine Crew’s BMG Mini for Nelson Cancer project will come to an end tomorrow when the raffle winner is announced. The four members of the restoration project were John Bruce, Dal Stewart, Bob Croy and Martin Reid, pictured right. Photos: Phillip Rollo.

Mini raffle raises big money The car may have been Mini but the restoration and fundraising project has been anything but. The Wakefield Caffeine Crew’s BMG Mini for Nelson Cancer project is super close to the $100,000 mark with nearly 10,000 raffle tickets sold ahead of this week’s draw. Waimea Weekly first brought you the story two years ago of four Wakefield men – Bob Croy, Dal Stewart John Bruce and Martin Reid – who bought a $750 Morris Mini Mk3 in the hope they could restore it and raffle it off for charity – all because their fundraising efforts at the Relay for Life had been beaten by a group that raised $6000. With a plan to top that at this year’s event, the caffeine crew who met together for coffee, found considerable support from throughout the community with

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Bowater Motor Group coming on board to fund all of the parts, and other businesses donating their services. During the months that raffle tickets have been selling for $10, the group has managed to rack up nearly 10,000 sales, meaning the $750 Mini has turned into a possible $100,000 for the Nelson Cancer Society. Other prizes have also been added included $18,000 worth of travel from House of Travel. Speaking ahead of Thursday’s draw at the Wakefield Police Station at 1pm, Bob says the whole project has been a lot better than they could have ever hoped. “We were going to do it ourselves on a shoe-

string but we’ve had so many sponsors come in and help us,” he says. “Nobody says no and the way the automotive trade in Nelson, particularly Bowaters, has got behind this has been amazing,” says Martin. The reason they chose the Mini was because it’s an iconic car that was instantly recognizable. “You see the little kids walk past and they go ‘oh look it’s a Mini!’ They all know it from Mr Bean or Goodbye Pork Pie. Everyone knows it, even for little kids.” The restoration took 20 months, and overall the project has taken two years, which sparked Bob to joke that they’ve probably aged considerably since the very first photos. A big crowd is expected at the Wakefield Police Station for the draw. “I don’t know if they’ll all fit but anyone is welcome to come.”

Covenants have a time limit to them. They can be for any time period, as it is whatever time frame the developers have registered and in some cases they can be in perpetuity, meaning forever.

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

The land covenants are not enforceable by council; however any breach to the local authority rules could be a council issue. For example, you have an old car parked on the road outside your property and it is being dismantled. You can get a copy of your land covenants from your solicitor or you could ask your real estate agent if they have access to them.

Next Week: Checking land covenants prior to purchasing.

Thieves caught by night vision goggles When a Hope resident filmed a burglary at the Hope Tennis Club rooms using infrared night vision video equipment last week, it was so dark the man says he was “standing in the open within 80 metres of the offenders without being detected”. The man, who does not wish to be named, was testing the night vision equipment in Hope Domain just after midnight on Wednesday when he observed a male and female acting suspiciously by one of the buildings. He remained motionless and recorded the pair breaking into the Hope Tennis Club rooms and phoned police while continuing to film the event.

Police arrived and chased the male offender as he tried to get away. The woman was also arrested at the scene - both were wearing gloves and had a range of tools police believe were used in the burglary. The Hope resident, who is a director of Archetype Precision Systems Limited which is a nationwide distributor for several brands of night vision and thermal imaging systems, says he also filmed police arriving at the domain. “A car pulled onto the domain carpark and its occupants made a beeline towards the tennis clubrooms,” he says. “This aroused enough suspicion to phone the police.

The first of the students have returned to school this week and by next week everyone will be back so our focus is on keeping those kids safe as they travel to and from school. We have a high visibility policing operation planned to monitor a range of issues and of course speed around schools is at the forefront of that. We’ll also be conducting checkpoints to make sure that drivers are complying with their class of licence. If your teenager is on a restricted licence they can’t give their mates or younger siblings a lift to school. Checkpoints will also be looking to see that younger children are in the required restraints and everyone is belted up. We’ll also be watching out for cellphone use by drivers. The other message I’d like to get out this week is to ask parents to make sure their young children are well supervised on their journey to school if they are walking or cycling. Parents need to make a good call about when their children are skilled enough to ride a bike to school or cross the street on their own. For goodness sake, please don’t leave that to chance.

An image through some night vision goggles of a police officer arriving to catch two alleged burglars in the act. “The digital night vision recorder was used to maintain visual contact with the offenders. The subsequent arrest was captured to an SD card.”

The Hope resident says he was using a Pulsar Recon night vision camera which his company has supplied to the Ministry for Primary Industries, Fisheries Compliance and Response Units, as well as to private security and surveillance companies. He believes it should be standard police equipment for “stealthily patrolling dark places”. “Using this equipment enables an officer to covertly observe and record a potentially dangerous situation while waiting for backup,” he says. Vintage engine club turns 40 The desire to keep historical machinery in the region and out of the rubbish dump was what prompted the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club to form. Forty years later and the club has brought hundreds of items back to life through long hours of volunteer restoration. This weekend the club is celebrating its anniversary by holding a 40th show at Higgins Park in Pigeon Valley – the steam museum which the club has called home for the past 20 years. Club member Allan Palmer explains that the criteria for a vintage engine or machine can be quite vast, but it was important that most of the items were historic to the district. “With emphasis on having them operating where possible, which is the whole point of this complex really;

As well as vintage tractors and machinery being on display at the event, there will be free rides with the traction engine and railway jigger, ladies handiwork displays, hay baling, sawmilling, and the transport and military vehicle machines will be open. The Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club has 70 members, which is steadily progressing. “At one stage we bloody well nearly made the 100 but 70 has been a good average,” says Baden Biggs. The show will be held this Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 4pm. Entry is $5 for adults while children under 13 years old are free. For more information phone Allan Palmer on 027 319 7427.

Something for everyone at Sarau Festival The Sarau Festival is guaranteed to have something for everyone with the Moutere district showcasing its finest food, wine, beer and arts and crafts as well as all things blackcurrant at the Moutere Hills Community Centre this Sunday.

The annual country fair has grown in popularity since it started in 2008 and coordinator Jenny Leith says they have worked hard to make this year’s edition the best yet. All the regular stalls, activities and entertainment have been retained and some

new ones added to keep the festival interesting, she says. “We always try to have something that is new but at the same time we keep the formula that has worked,” Jenny says. Jenny says they have kept admission BACK FORthe2014

Freak fire a threat to forest

A freak fire that threatened to spread to a large forestry block in the Aniseed Valley last week illustrated the risk of spontaneous combustion associated with using skid sites during logging operations. Debris from logging operations piled up on the edge of a large, or super, skid site in Morton’s Rd near the Hackett Reserve self-combusted on Wednesday, heating up and then bursting into flames. Skid sites are a cleared and flattened area where felled trees are processed and stockpiled during logging operations. Fortunately smoke from the blaze was quickly spotted by Mike Oliver in the Richmond lookout and extinguished by fire crews from Appleby and Brightwater as well as forestry crews from Hancocks. But Waimea Rural Fire Authority operations manager Doug Ashford says the fire-fighters

charge down to $5 for adults with children free so that it remained an affordable day out. The festival will be held at the Moutere Hills Community Centre and domain on the Moutere Highway this Sunday from 3pm to 9pm. No dogs are allowed.

Fire fighters work to extinguish a blaze that started when material ignited spontaneously in a skid site in a forestry block in the Aniseed Valley last week. were fortunate that the surrounding scrub and trees were still slightly damp from rain that had fallen a few days earlier. The wet vegetation and lack of wind slowed the fire down allowing it to be smothered by fire-fighters and forestry crews before it got out of control. “The flames were three or four metres high and if we hadn’t had that rain the fire would have been off and up the hill.” Doug says the fire started

by spontaneous combustion caused by wood decomposing and generating heat that ignited drier material near the top of the skid site. He says super skid sites, which are used more than once during a logging operation, are more prone to spontaneous combustion because the material on top of the “slash” has a chance to dry out and provide fuel for the decomposing material underneath.

Gardens to host holiday fair Richmond Playcentre's annual Nelson Anniversary day fair is back and organisers are promising it will be better than ever. To be held this Monday, February 3 at Washbourn Gardens, playcentre president Fiona Andrews says the event is rearing to go, after rain washed out the fundraiser last year. "This year the event has had a real

makeover. We have been preparing for months. This is our annual fundraiser, our main one for the year and a lot of hard work has gone into it." With stallholders galore, sweets, books, plants, kite flying, preserves, a bouncy castle, there will be plenty of entertainment for families. The event will run from 9am to 3pm, with a rain date of February 6.

Community benefits from Food and Wine Festival The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival isn’t just about having a good time - it’s also about helping some of the Nelson-Tasman region’s hardest working community groups and volunteers do their job. The Rotary Club of Richmond’s fundraising event has been held nine times raising $230,000 for community groups around the region. So when Richmond Rotary announced it was planning to go ahead with the festival in 2014 after a year off it was good news for a number of organisations including the Brightwater Rural Fire Force. The Brightwater Rural Fire Force received donations from Richmond Rotary after organising the car parking at previous festivals and the force’s controller, Ross Stratford, says they are delighted the festival is returning after being postponed last year. It had been the force’s principal fundraising event and they are looking forward to putting on high visibility vests to direct traffic again at the Middle-Earth Vineyard on Bryant Road in Brightwater on Sunday February 16. “The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival had been our major source of fundraising

It’s a full on day but it’s also a very rewarding day - sometimes you can spend a lot of time fundraising for very little return.” Although the Brightwater Rural Fire Force receives funding from the Tasman District Council and forestry companies through the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, Ross says the donations from Richmond Rotary will allow the force to purchase extra equipment. “The money from Rotary means we can buy things like defibrillators and oxygen for medical emergencies and better personal protective equip-

ment for our fire-fighters - it’s a big help. “But we aren’t the only ones who benefit. There’s lots of other groups that benefit so it’s good for the whole community.” This year proceeds from the Brightwater Food and Wine Festival will also go to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Wanderers Sports Club and the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. We welcome two new language tutors to our programme. Last year our long time Italian tutor retired and we are very pleased that Laura Bettjeman is now able to offer classes for us. Laura is Italian and has been living in NZ for seven years with her Kiwi husband and children. Noel Eichbaum has travelled and studied in Spain and South America and teaches at his language school, Spanglish. He will be teaching the Spanish classes. If you enjoy cooking, Allan AddisonSaipe has prepared a new cooking class for you. ‘Summer

Fusion Cuisine’ will fuse the traditional dishes of our Kiwi heritage with the Pacific rim ingredients we have been introduced to. Jasmine Yordsiri has returned from Thailand and is offering her popular Thai cooking classes and Savita Prasad will treat you to butter chicken in her Saturday ‘Simply Indian’ workshop. Crafty people have many to choose from including our newest workshop learning a modern version of ‘Batik’ with Philippa Winch. Popular classes fill fast so contact us as soon as you can. Just a thought... Top dogs go on show A couple of weeks ago I went to the hairdresser – got a style and a wee bit of colour. I confess my hair is going grey. But it’s more than my hair. In some ways life has become a bit grey. Some personality types like black and white. I do. I like logical; orderly. But life isn’t like that is it? Not often anyway. The church does have some order, something of truth. We believe the Bible is God’s Word. It tells the amazing story of God reaching out in love through Jesus. And it gives fabulous guidelines on how to live. Jesus said “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” That’s good. We try (and stuff up frequently). But how to love isn’t always obvious. We can’t accept everything about some lifestyles if they are harmful. But Christians Susan Gill, can be narrow-minded Church on the and judgemental if we are Hill. not careful. What to do? How to love? The Bible also says “..turn your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding.” At times it takes real effort to know the best way to love. “Double – listening” is a great idea. 1. Listening to the people and the circumstances: What is really happening? What is it like for the person/people involved? What do they really need - not just what do they want? 2. Listening to the Bible. It does not cover every single situation. It can appear confusing and even contradictory. Still the principles are there if we truly listen to God’s voice. Why so much grey? I don’t know. But there are always ways to love. If we ask God. If we use the technique of “double – listening”, we will find those ways. Our loving God will provide all we need to put that love into practice.

For all of your green waste requirements, take a trip to Greenwaste to Zero on Cargill Pl. Richmond’s green waste recycling centre offers an affordable way to get rid of your green waste, and recycles it back into useful gardening material. If you are a self-confessed green thumb, then now is the time to mulch your garden. There are still a few hot dry months ahead and mulching will trap moisture in and keep weed growth to a minimum. Greenwaste to Zero’s chip mulch will stay on steep banks and will feed your garden as it breaks down over time. There are different quantities of compost and chip mulch available, big and small, and Greenwaste to Zero offer a free courtesy trailer to make transporting their product back to your place nice and easy. Now is also the perfect time to compost your vegetable garden and repair or plant new lawn. Greenwaste to Zero’s compost is 100% organically produced, is clean to use and doesn’t have any unpleasant smell. Add to that the fact that it is free of weeds and the benefits really start stacking up! Call in and talk to Patricia about her nutrient rich Grasspost, that will result in a lush green lawn and discuss how you can have your garden in its best condition. Looking for fresh, seasonal flavour? A place to sit back and relax? Then knock on the Cellar Door, the brand new café and restaurant at Waimea Estate. Katrina and Neil Ward are loving their first summer at the cafe surrounded by the grapes that make Waimea Estates award winning wines. They welcome locals to check out the great new café and seasonal menu. Meet up with friends or colleagues for a drink and try their small plates to share - tapas style, they’re a mini burst of flavour. How about Friday night drinks and Katrina Ward nibbles? Casual, spur of the moment get togethers are welcome and the menu is just as spontaneous. The Cellar Door is also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. All items on the day time menu are priced under $20 and all items for dinner are under $30. Vegetarians, gluten free and dietary requirements are well looked after. Katrina would like to welcome everyone to experience their new local cafe, The Cellar Door at Waimea Estates.

Your Voice

Call for advice volunteers: A quick note to thank you for the article about us [Nelson Citizen’s Advice Bureau] looking for new volunteers you printed in last week’s Weekly. Your willingness to help the community is a great support to organisations like ours. We do appreciate it. Heather Thomas.

Redneck nonsense. Richid Whiting.

I like coming to Dad’s work and watching him make rings. Dad showed me how to make a ring and let me melt gold. James (Glen James Tomlinson). Bring it on! The holidays are a tad too long. Kristyn Musson.

There was a huge crowd at the rodeo, did you enjoy it? Rodeo was fantastic again, such a fun day out and so different to everything else in Nelson. It’s great to be able to take the kids to different things and they loved it. Well done organisers. (Via text).

These holidays have gone too fast and the weather has been rubbish, I love the holidays with my kids. Michelle Walker. So, so, so happy the holidays are almost over. It’s fine when the weather is good because the kids can run around outside, but it’s a bit too much when they have to stay inside all day due to rain. Bring on school! (Via text).

Kids and I enjoyed it. Marie Allen. Enjoyable day out. Shay Wilson.

I used to enjoy my kids being home for the holidays now it’s a waiting game for the grandies. Irene Cassidy.

Love it! Alexandra McCombe.

I’m a bit annoyed.... We have Nelson anniversary and Waitangi together so Nelsonians can enjoy our beautiful place together with our families .... Waitangi Day and Nelson anniversary allows us to take limited annual leave, make the most of the weather and spend time with kids. However the schools have felt the need to start school on a Tuesday have break on the Thursday and then go back to school on Friday ... Right in the middle of this holiday period. Slightly ridiculous if you ask me. Maori Png. Lots of kids will be having the Friday off no doubt Maori Png!! I’ve enjoyed the holidays, work full time but Dad has been home and the kids have had a fun cruisy time! Best part for the kids was their grandparents coming to visit for 3 weeks!! Sarah-Hope Bailey I think it is absolutely stupid that schools open on Friday 7. Would prefer all schools start back this week and all at same time and then have a long weekend after Waitangi. Shay Wilson.

Toilets delight: As a resident of Nelson City and manager of Living Light Candles it

is an absolute delight to see the hard work and creativity of the volunteers come to fruition with the completed toilet block. I was amazed at the mosaic work in the ladies (didn’t venture into the mens) and just love the freshness of the new colours and the feeling of light and vibrancy around the area now. Standing at the back of the City Centre Arcade looking towards the block makes me smile with its rainbow effect. Jude Biggs. Car Show cruise: Since the early days of the Nelson Car Show the cruise has been a major feature, and 2014 will be no different! This year the cruise will be held on the evening of the 8th February, meeting at the WOW Museum car park at 6pm. If you’ve got a cool vehicle then grab your mates and family and bring it out for an evening cruise, finishing with a picnic dinner at Tahuna Beach. If not then find a nice spot somewhere along the cruise route to watch all the great cars and bikes drive by. Nelson Car Show. SPEEDWAY: Nelson’s poor run in the streetstock circles continued at the ZUMO New Zealand Championship at the Tahunanui Holiday Park Speedway on the weekend. Just one local driver, Gordon Ingham, reached the finals, but struggled against the country’s top drivers. Gordon’s best finish was an 11th placing in the second heat, but a Did Not Finish in the third heat saw him 14th overall. The event was won by Dunedin’s Paul Simon

83 years old and ‘out to win’ Jean Walker doesn’t go out there to lose. Even at 83 years old, the Richmond grandmother remains competitive. “I go out there to win,” she says. “I’m not out there to give them the ball, I put the ball away from them so they have to run and chase it.” Jean was the oldest competitor at the Tennis NZ Seniors National Championship held at the Tasman and Hope Tennis Clubs throughout the weekend, and managed to secure a second placing, winning a silver medal with Fay Rangi in the 75 plus doubles. “I think I was,” Jean quietly confirms when queried about being the oldest. “It’s not a matter of being old though. I believe if you want to play a sport then you just focus on it and play. I don’t play as hard as I could but I still play in competitions, and at least three

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz times a week.” Jean discovered tennis as a 20 year old “lover of sport”. She was living in Invercargill at the time and also played badminton, netball and basketball. “I enjoyed playing tennis because it was outside and it seemed to be the one I enjoyed most.” Having played competitively for a number of years, Jean decided to stop for about a decade, until the lure of tennis brought her back – this time for 50 years. “I’m 83. “I’m very healthy and live a reasonably good life so I think that’s part of it, I don’t know how else to put it,” she says of her longevity. Jean missed out on competing at the recent South Island Masters Games

in Nelson, so made an extra effort to be fit for the Tennis NZ Seniors National Tournament. “It had never been here before so it was my aim to get right for it.” Her grandchildren excel at sport, with one in the United States on a football scholarship, but Jean remains the only member of her family actively involved in tennis. “I’m quite privileged to have family that are good at sports and I think they’re quite proud of their grandmother too.” Jean already has a list of competitions scheduled in for the next month and plans to keep playing “until my legs won’t let me”. “I’ll play until I can’t play. I’m 83 but I just go out there and play to win. I don’t plan on stopping. If some medical thing stops me then I’ll have to size 83 year old Jean Walker competes at the Tennis NZ Senior things up but other than that, no.” Nationals in Hope last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

there’s a putting green and a driving range.” Use of the driving range is just $7 for a bucket of balls and if you return them all there will be a $2 refund. The cost of hiring a club can be discussed. Other facilities at the club include a bar, catering, and the Pro Shop. This year Greenacres Golf Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary at the beginning on February. On Monday February 3, a special green fee of just $7.50 will be offered to non-members, encouraging them to try out Greenacres for the day. “It’s normally $50 for a non-affiliated member, so that is quite a big discount, but we want everyone to come and celebrate the day.” Derrick says the anniversary for the club, which started off on Greenacres Rd as a nine-hole course but was eventually built up to 18 holes, is

a significant milestone and highlights its strong membership base. Greenacres has sprouted several success careers, and although Ryan Chisnall has moved to Australia, he was a Greenacres member, and is currently competing against Australia’s top amateurs. Hamish Campbell, an apprentice professional, moved to Nelson and holds the course record of 62 off the white tees. Teenager Eve Clarke currently plays with a 13 handicap and is hoping to be the next Lydia Ko. Derrick says despite her age she has been doing really well. The sign as you leave the course says “smile, it’s only a game,” so come play a round of golf, there’s nothing to lose. For more information, call Greenacres Golf Club on 544 8420.
