Richmond Mall’s Giant giveaway Phillip Rollo The Richmond Mall is joining “the biggest show in town” yet again, with all shoppers going in to the draw to win Nelson Giants merchandise every day in March. There will be replica Fico Finance Nelson Giants singlets, jerseys and signed basketballs on offer. Every week, a double season pass will also be drawn. To enter, all you have to do is shop at any store in the Richmond Mall and write your details on the back of your receipt before putting it in the boxes provided. Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the competition was inspired by a similar one held during the Rugby World Cup. “We did it with the All Blacks last year and that was one of the most successful competitions we have run, with thousands of entries. The Nelson Giants are the most successful sports team in Nelson ever, and they are the biggest show in town,” says David. “It’s important that we, as the biggest mall in the top of the south, are supporting them.” Richmond Mall will also be sponsoring the noise crew. Twenty students from schools around the region act as the noise crew for one game each, making as much noise as they can in support of the Nelson Giants. Members of the Nelson Giants roster will also return to the Mall for Shoot the Hoops with the Giants on April 16-20. This is a unique chance to shoot baskets with some of the stars of New Zealand basketball. Stall holders claim final spots for Summer Fare

father in law had said earlier, suggesting all parties sit down with a negotiator instead and get the whole situation put to rest. The residents, through their committee, say they want three things: no price increase this year, especially on the heels of a 124 per cent price rise last year; that the funds that go into a sinking fund to maintain the village be protected and stay with the village, not able to be removed by the owners at a whim and lastly, that the percentage of increases are maintained in relation to something like the cost price index. Michael has said previously that the levy, which pays for maintenance of common ground, a courtesy coach and collection of green

The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare is gearing up for another fantastic year. The band, Groove Collective, has been confirmed to take to the stage for the entire evening and most of the stall holders have claimed the final spots, following a push in the Waimea Weekly. waste, was not enough to cover costs and there is no money in the repair and replacement fund, which is meant to pay for upgrades at the Village. That does not fly with residents though, who are demanding to see the books so they can find out where the $256,500 that the owners currently get per year is going. There appears to be no way forward dealing directly with Michael and that any possible resolution would come only through a compassionate and common sense approach hopefully through his father in law. The meeting ended at around 9.45pm with Jerry thanking the people who have stood up for the village, including TDC councillor Kit Maling, Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page and local MP Maryan Street.

Unlimited events and marketing co-ordinator Kim Quint says a wide range of food and refreshment stall holders have come on board and it will definitely showcase the “rich harvest” the region has to offer. “We’ve pretty much got as many as we can fit in,” says Kim. There will be a medieval theme for the evening, similar to last year, with some great prizes up for grabs for the best dressed people. “People are definitely encouraged to dress up in medieval styles.”

The Maori Board will comprise of the mayor, one representative from each iwi and one representative of matawaka. The Rural Advisory Committee must have eight members, featuring the mayor, and one member nominated by the following groups: Federated Farmers Golden Bay, Federated Farmers Nelson, Rural Women NZ Golden Bay, Rural Women NZ Nelson, as well as one member to represent fruit growers, one member to represent the wine and grape industry and one member to represent the forestry industry. If you live in either the Tasman District or Nelson City areas and you are listed on the parliamentary electoral roll, voting papers will be posted to you at the address listed on the electoral roll. Voting papers will also be posted to any ratepayer electors enrolled for these areas. If for some reason you do not receive your original voter pack, or you are not listed on the final electoral roll for the poll but you want to vote, you will need to apply for a special voting paper when the voting period opens. Any resident aged 18 years-old and over who resides within either the Tasman District or Nelson City Council areas as well as any ratepayers that own property within either council area but who live outside those areas, providing they have officially enrolled as ratepayer electors with either the TDC or NCC, are eligible to vote. The elections for mayor, councillors and community board members, if amalgamation proceeds, will be held on October 13 with successful candidates coming into office on November 1. The next general election for the council and community boards will then be held in October 2016, meaning the Nelson Tasman District Council and its community boards will have an initial four-year term. For further details, call the election helpline on 0508 666 556 or visit www.lgc.govt.nz

Voting for amalgamation will decide more than just uniting two districts, so do you really know what you are voting for? Waimea Weekly has put together the following information without input from the pro or the anti amalgamation factions. Here are the facts to let you know what is actually happening. If amalgamation is to proceed, electors will vote for one mayor over the entire Nelson Tasman District. The united district will be divided into eight wards and feature 16 members of council. The eight wards will include Golden Bay, LakesMurchison, Motueka, Moutere-Waimea, Richmond, Stoke, Nelson and Atawhai. The members of the council to be elected at the first election will include one member elected for the Golden Bay Ward and Lakes-Murchison Ward; two members from the Motueka Ward and Moutere-Waimea Ward; three members from Richmond, Stoke and Nelson wards and one from the Atawhai Ward. Two polls will be conducted simultaneously across Nelson and Tasman from March 31 until April 21. For amalgamation to proceed, the majority of those who vote must vote in favour of the proposal. If amalgamation is rejected, the councils will continue to operate how they do currently. The united council may appoint committees that it considers necessary. Until at least October 31, 2015, the membership of those committees must include a member from the Maori Board, the Rural Advisory Board and every community board and each of these members will have a vote on those committees. Committees and community boards are entitled to have a member on the council’s committee. They will have to provide a nomination or advise the council in writing that they do not wish to have someone serve on the committee.

Vintage boats head back to lake

Phillip Rollo

The major difference between a boat of today and a boat from the early to mid 1900’s is the material. But you only have to see Pete Rainey and Glenn Common’s collection to see how long a boat made from New Zealand’s finest timber can last. The pair organise the country’s largest vintage boat show, the New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show, which is to be held at Lake Rotoiti again this weekend. The event is in its 13th year and features more than one hundred boat collectors from throughout New Zealand. Thirteen years ago, Pete bought a 1950 boat called La Paloma. It was one of the boats he remembered from his childhood at Lake Rotoiti, except back then it wasn’t as cool as it is now, he says. “I thought they were really terrible back then. Everybody was into fibre glass boats and newer boats when I was kid,” says Pete. “But 30-40 years later I saw this for sale going out to Rotoiti and thought it was such a cool thing. Nobody is looking at saving these old things.” That boat, which was restored by Richard Walker, Mick Fone and John Harris, is one of the major reasons the boat show exists

today. Reading through his American classic boat magazines, he noticed a huge trend of classic boat shows. “I thought that was something that could work really well here. So I made up a poster and put it up to see what would happen and 30 boats turned up in the first year.” Word of mouth has increased the numbers each year and it has now become a key date in the calendar for classic boat collectors from the North and South Island. But it’s not just the boats that have brought in the crowds. It is the setting as well. Pete is always amazed at how few people have visited Lake Rotoiti before, and the show is one major attraction to get them there as summer ends. Pete says the show is more unique because each boat must arrive on a trailer, until Glenn quickly pointed out one person’s failed attempt at driving it up the Buller River. “It failed quite spectacularly. It can be done, but only in very, very high flow,” he laughs.

Chris Auchinvole NATIONAL PARTY MP Ph 0800 NATS MP (0800 628 767) Email Chris.AuchinvoleMP@parliament.govt.nz www.auchinvole.com

www.national.org.nz

Finding boats at rubbish dumps or in old sheds, Pete has set about collecting the antiques and hopes to one day put them in a museum at Lake Rotoiti. “Otherwise the whole history and the whole tradition goes away.” The variety of boats on display change every year and it is certainly not uncommon to see a $400,000 classic next to something someone has pulled out of a shed. There will also be around five boats people have been brought in from the US. Glenn says

the show has made people think twice about “their dad’s old boat in the shed”. The show will be held on both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend. The first display will start on land before they are taken out on the water. Pete says most boat owners will be happy to take the public out on the water if they are interested in going for a spin. It all begins at 10am and entry fee can be paid at the gate. For more information, phone Pete on 545 6591.

Local farmer behind local agricultural show A new agriculture and horticulture expo has been created by a Foxhill farmer, hoping it will bring back more young people to the industry. Leigh Barton will be held on Friday March 16 from 10am to 6pm on organiser Julian Stone’s farm. Entry and carparking are both free and Julian has already been busy fielding calls from interested parties and stall holders. Local businesses will get a chance to showcase their farming products. It was originally going to hold 10 businesses,

but it has branched out because of the interest. From tractors to chainsaws and lawnmowers, the expo will showcase everything agricultural. Julian says the idea stems from New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays and has been in the pipeline for some time. However, his show is going to be more “hands on,” like Fieldays used to be, he says. Public entry will be through the back of Foxhill Cemetary Rd. For more information you can contact Julian on 541 9653.

Shearer publishes poetry book after twenty years

Phillip Rollo

Mike Boyd used to get the strap for making mistakes during reading time at school. More than 50 years on, the dyslexic sheep shearer has published a book on his collection of poetry, most of which he has made himself from his caravan. Mike grew up in Tui in the Tadmore Valley and left Tapawera Area School as a 14 yearold to become a sheep shearer, because he had trouble learning due to his dyslexia. By the time Mike was 15 years-old, he could shear 100 sheep with blades, before teaching himself to shear with a machine. He is one of the few people in the world that has won competitions with both hand shears and machine shears. While it may be surprising to some, Mike says a lot of shearers are quite into poetry. Where Mike grew up, there was no power, and his father would read poetry for entertainment. That was his first taste and he was hooked soon after. He says there was “hardly any” history on sheep shearing in New Zealand and AusYou’re invited to purchase our new $350 mini membership… tralia, and his poetry collection told the hisand receive $150 extra credit FREE! tory in a more unique way. WEDNESDAY 29 February 2012

Teams prepare for fundraiser Boobs N All are set to bounce around Saxton Field on Saturday as the Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is back for 2012. Mandy Carter and the Boobs N All team have been busy fundraising for the biennial event that aims to “celebrate and acknowledge cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against cancer” through fundraising for research. Mandy is also a spokesperson for the event in Nelson, spreading the word and excitement for the fifth edition of Nelson Relay For Life. Close to 100 teams have registered but in years past it is the number of supporters that turn up who swell the numbers to a number of thousands. Mandy says one of the most difficult parts of the organisation is completing the roster. The event starts at 4pm on Saturday March 3 and each team is meant to have at least one person on the course through the wee hours of the morning to the finish at 9am on Sunday. But the same as battling cancer – no one wants to walk alone, so it means there will be some interrupted sleep over the night. “I did my roster yesterday, and that’s a hard one. With 12 of us walking and 16 spots we

worked out each one of us is going to have to do at least two runs, maybe three. So trying to time it so everyone gets a decent break was awful, it was just bad luck if you got stuck with 2 in the morning,” laughs Mandy. Although knowing of some of the challenges Mandy has faced down, sorting the rosters and getting her mates moving at 4am is like a walk in the park. “I’m a breast cancer survivor. When I got diagnosed I was HER2-positive and back then Herceptin was the drug you needed and you had to buy it yourself for $80,000.” However like Relay For Life, Mandy’s fight was a team and community effort. “We started fundraising and all my friends got together and made this committee called Boobs N All. They were incredible, along with [Waimea Weekly publisher] Steve Page, the community, my friends, family and church – we got there, we made the $80,000,” says Mandy with a gleam of pride in her eyes, as much for her friends as for herself. Mandy was still undergoing treatment when Boobs N All took part in the 2008 Relay edition because “it just made sense”, and now Mandy says 2012 is about giving back. “The main reason we are taking part is to fundraise for the cancer society, and for me it’s about giving back to the community because I wouldn’t be here if it

wasn’t for the community, and Relay for Life is just one small way I can give something back. I’m sure a lot of other people feel the same way” says Mandy.

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

Here we are again at the end of yet another month. Don’t quite know what happened to summer this year – must have hapMARC pened on the days when I was at work….but, as of tomorrow, we are into autumn. As I write this the promised rain is starting to fall. A lovely soft drop at this stage and I am sure the plants are loving it. The roses are just finishing their second flowering which has been really good this season, and if you keep them deadheaded and fed they should keep producing flowers well into April. The canna lilies are looking lovely at present. These provide a great splash of colour in the back of a summer border or as a stand alone feature. Mine are deep red with Chocolate Chip Garden Bark burgundy leaves and are right next to the bright orange flowers and stripy yellow and green foliage of canna “Tropicana”. Talking of roses – as we were – now that Valentine’s Day is over I can tell you how my man gets around this every year! Some time ago when we lived in Christchurch, and I worked as a PA, it was a big deal about whose partner would remember to give roses or a flower of some sort on Valentine’s day. and he told me he had read with interest an article about this lady growing seed she had been given many years ago. I “came clean”, and told him I wrote the article and we had a laugh. Vince is pretty sure that the original seed would have come from them and that the variety is “Capri”. This originated from the Isle of Capri and the tomato type sounds very like the ones they still grow. He explained that they were not good as a commercial crop as they are susceptible to rust and insects, but very lovely eating and with a great flavour. Vince still grows these and another Roma type which they use for bottling and sauce making. They are also looking into grafting the Capri tomato onto a wild tomato root stock, in an effort to make it more robust and strengthen the plants against pests and diseases to make them more commercially viable. Watch this space.

Tips

Thisks wee

Keep checking for insects – aphids are still about on new growth – spray with Beat a Bug, Confidor or Shield, Kiwi Care (No insects) etc. Thrips are the scourge of summer. There are many varieties of these beasties and they love to shelter on the undersides of leaves near to the main veins. They can be controlled with some of the sprays mentioned above but on reading an article by Rudd I felt this would be the way to go. He suggests a series of sprays with Neem oil. It just puts them off their food! Spray two to three weeks apart and this will cover the nymphs as they develop and will also take care of any eggs and babies that may emerge through the season. They will then not eat, and drop off the plants – and die.

Q& A Q: Mary from Atawhai asks: Do you know how to get rid of a large area of bamboo? It is quite big and tough and I would really like it gone. A: There is no easy answer to this Mary and it will be expensive. There are not many products out there to deal with this successfully but one that should work is Amitrole. It is a strong poison so use with care around any desirable plants, and if it is on your neighbour’s border do let them know what you are doing as it could affect plants on their side. Vigilant is another herbicide gel but you would have to cut the bamboo down and then apply this to the freshly cut stems. It is easier to use and less invasive than spraying. Roundup may work with the addition of Pulse penetrant, and is better for the soil as it is biodegradable but I feel it may be a boy on a man’s errand (if you get my drift). If all else fails call Nelmac. They may be able to dig it out!

Members of the Richmond and Brightwater Scout groups at the Scout Founders’ Camp up Wairoa Valley on Saturday are from left; Caleb Delany, Jayden Flanagan, Logan Faulkner, Caleb Miller, Sam Hamson, Jamie Thompson, Taylor Berkett, Clayton Anderson and Josh Kelly.

Scouts set up camp Scouts from the region’s eight divisions set up camp in the Wairoa Valley over the weekend for the Scout Founders’ Camp. The camp celebrated the world-wide Scout Founders’ Day. Scouts founder Robert BadenPowell was born on February 22. Nelson’s scouts had to create their own camp-

site boundary and engage in fun activities such as sliding down the muddy mud slide, three-way tug-of-war, throwing wet sponges at the camp leaders, paint party and eating a gutter full of banana split. Divisions from the Waimea region included Richmond, Brightwater and Wakefield.

The stunningly designed Hyundai Elantra is painted prior to its launch on June, 2011 onto the New Zealand new car market. This television campaign has been awarded the top campaign in the world for Hyundai at the 2012 Global Marketing Conference in Singapore. Advertorial.

Hyundai wins global marketing award

The 2012 Hyundai Global Marketing Conference in Singapore was a grand occasion for Hyundai New Zealand, where they picked up for the first time the top award: The Marketing Award for the Best Television Campaign of 2011. Hyundai New Zealand’s Elantra “Steel. Paint. Design” television campaign topped the four finalists selected for Best Television Commercial. The entries were selected from different regions and each entrant selected was asked to submit their best marketing campaign from 2011. Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) Australia, HMC Korea, HMC Italy and Hyundai Motors New Zealand were selected as finalists by a panel of HMC judges. Hyundai New Zealand’s submission, the Elantra launch campaign, introduced the all new Elantra to New Zealand and used HMC’s amazing story of build quality and production strength to bring credibility to the product. Did you know that Hyundai makes its own steel, the only manufacturer in the world to do so? Did you also know that their paint process includes 14 coats, applied to the entire body to produce a flawless finish? Well these and other interesting facts were put

together in a campaign to launch the all new Elantra. Hyundai New Zealand’s chief operating officer, Tom Ruddenklau, is jubilant. He comments “the Elantra campaign was fantastic, it built on the platform of consistent rational messages that support purchase decision, creating a deeper and more meaningful relationship between Hyundai and New Zealand consumers. It also very successfully launched the stunning new Elantra, which is a fantastic showcase of Hyundai’s global design, production and R&D prowess.” “We must also give credit to our hard working advertising agency, Assignment Group, who have been recognised as producing the best advertising campaign in the world for Hyundai.” Earlier in the year, the Hyundai Elantra also took top honours in the most exclusive award in North America, being named the 2012 North American Car of the Year. It is the best-selling Hyundai model globally, and locally here in New Zealand, the Elantra has gained a 400 per cent market share increase since its release in June of last year.

Nelson has always punched above its weight on the football field and part of that comes down to the dedication Nelson Bays Football puts into promoting youth development. Nelson Forests Ltd is proud to support Wanderer’s Rugby Club and wish them all the best for the coming season

Ben Palmer, Aaron Everett, Tanu Malietoa, Chez Bloxham, Frazer Lochhead, Garry Higgins, Nola Roeske, Claire Dallison, Dan Perrin, Johnny Bloxham are gearing up for the coming rugby season with Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers will field teams in all three divisions for the coming rugby season as they build the foundations for the future. Wanderers have been boosted by a bigger push from its sponsors, giving it the green light to return to the first division. While there is a number of exciting faces arriving at the club, president Tanu Malietoa is looking forward to the structure on all levels, from the first division right down to JAB. The first division side will be coached by Johnny Bloxham and former Chiefs hooker Daniel Perrin. Daniel will act in a player/coach role and gives the side plenty of experience having been involved as a player at Super 15 level as late as 2011. The second division side are the current champions, following their final victory over Murchison last season. Aaron Everett and Garry Higgins will take the reins of that side. Ben Palmer will be the manager for the top two divisions, rotating be-

tween Kyle Paki Paki and Frazer Lochhead. Tanu says it is great to be back playing in all three divisions and couldn’t thank sponsors Taylor’s Contracting and Golden Wings enough for their involvement in the club. Both of the sponsors have committed to the club long term. “It’s been a three year absence since we were in division one. Yes the division two side won last year, but it took us three years of hard work to get there,” says Tanu. He expects division one will be the same, suggesting a three to five year plan is in place. “We’re not going out there to win it, we’re just going to try to be competitive. We’re doing things different this season with a media liaison and we’ve a cook on board to feed the boys every Thursday night.” Lachie Taylor, who is an IRB level 4 coach, will be mentoring the coaches throughout the season, which Tanu says is a big coup for the club. By upskilling all of the coaches in the club, he is confident the players will benefit immensely. Lachie’s role will also help bring through younger coaches.

Taylors Contracting Wanderers 2012 Division two captain Scott Reed celebrates his sides championship win last year. Johnny Eggers will be coach of the division three side. Steve Leef will manage the side. Tanu says the division three side is very exciting, featuring plenty of young talent from around the region. “There are plenty of young guys in that team, 17 to 18 yearolds.” The club has also secured the services of personal trainer Chez Bloxham who will work under the wing of Claire Dallison. Tanu says the club’s absence from the premier

division has given the team time to reflect and a hunger to prove themselves again. “We just want to reposition the whole way we look at things. The structure has totally changed.” JAB registration night will be held on Friday March 9 between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Taylor’s Contracting has generously provided rugby balls for all junior players that register and pay their subs on the night. Neynens selected for NZ Under-19’s Connor Neynens has had two reasons to perform this season, but now that his efforts have seen him selected for the New Zealand Under-19 cricket team, the pressure is now on to cement a spot in the side ahead of the world cup. The 18 year-old Wakefield resident has been playing for Stoke/Nayland this year after previously plying his trade with Waimea College. His performances this season have always been backed by a desire to push for the New Zealand side, so there was a certain amount of relief when the all-rounder got the final call up on Thursday morning. “Yeah it’s been a long time coming really. I wasn’t too confident, I didn’t have the best trial and I got injured on the first day, so I wasn’t able to play a full part in the trials just been. But I’m pretty stoked,” he says. The New Zealand Under-19 side will take on Australia, England and India in a quad series in Townsville next month, before another

15-man squad is finalised ahead of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup back in Queensland just four months later. Connor spent part of last year playing in England and says the level of their opposition should not be underestimated with the majority of the English Under-19 squad playing at country cricket level. “The Aussies are awesome as well. Most of them are probably professionals.” While the weight is off his shoulders for the next month, Connor knows a strong performance in the black jersey will all but guarantee him a boarding pass to the world cup and a potential place in the Central Districts squad, following his involvement in their youth setup. Connor is likely to be used as the fourth seam option for New Zealand and will bat in the middle order. Next year he is planning on heading to Dunedin to study at Otago University.

Electors who have moved recently or who have changed their name or other details also need to fill in a new enrolment form to update their details. How to enrol or update your details Enrolling and updating your details is quick and easy to do. Enrolment forms are available from all Post Shops, by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56), by Freetexting your name and address to 3676, or by requesting or downloading one from the elections website www.elections.org.nz. Local electors can check their enrolment status at the elections website or on any roll at any Post Shop, courthouse or public library. People who are on the unpublished roll will need to contact Sandra Hartley at Tasman District Council (Ph. 03 543 8400) to get information on how to apply to cast a special vote.

The Rotoiti Power Boat Club will be conducting a regatta involving high-speed power boat racing at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on both 17 and 18 March 2012. Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster by the Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw 2005 (Amended 2006), the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event. Also, exclusive use of Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti out to a line which heads due east from a point 200 metres south of the Brunner Peninsula is provided to the event organisers. The reserved area will therefore include the water ski access lane, swimming area, and those areas of water immediately adjacent to the launching ramps and beach at Kerr Bay. Vessels wishing to transit through or enter the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with the event organisers, and then may do so when, and under such conditions that the event organisers may choose to specify. Event communications may be using UHF radio, or Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. Vessels entering or within the reserved area are requested to comply with any direction given by the event organisers or event officials relating to passage through that reserved area as if it was a direction given by the Harbourmaster. Persons wishing to swim from the lake shore or waterski are recommended to use West Bay. Waterskiiers should deep-water start anywhere more than 200m from shore outside of the reserved area, unless towed at less than 5 knots to or from the 200m line. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz /recreation/boating-fishing/special-events-and-activities
