SURVIVING Ahead of schedule T T T

Dying sheep were crawling around the farm when Peter Phipps responded to a dog attack last Tuesday. The horrific incident at the rural Mahana property, which is leased by Ian Parkes, was being likened to a war-zone by Peter, the farm’s manager. Peter had a message left on his answer phone by a neighbour that said four of the sheep had been attacked. The actual tally eventually rose to 56. “I went straight over there,” he says. “There were either dead sheep in ponds or sheep wandering around with their heads half eaten. I’ve never seen anything like this. It was like walking around in a warzone with half shot men trying to crawl to safety.” Describing the scenes he witnessed, Peter kept saying he had never seen anything like this, despite previously living down south where snow storms would

kill flocks of sheep. “The worse thing about it is most of them were still alive and we had to put them down.” Ian says one of the dogs involved had been indentified as belonging to a neighbour and the “emotional” owner had been spoken to. However, he still believes there was another dog involved as Peter had spotted at least two. “[The second dog] is a small white one or whitish.” Tasman Dog Control Service’s John Bergman, who is contracted to the Tasman District Council, says the owners of the dogs are liable to cover the estimated $8000 compensation of the dead sheep and confirmed that both dogs will be put down. “Yeah definitely. The prices at present are a joke. To go to Christchurch one way is $200, that’s a ridiculous price.”

“If I was flying somewhere in New Zealand I’d be looking for the most economical, efficient airline.”

“I probably would. You can’t beat competition can you?”

“I certainly would. I like travelling and I have family in other parts of the country that I’d like to visit.”

Attack on sheep Builder wins NZ apprentice award FROM PAGE 1 unable to confirm the identity of the second dog but labelled the whole incident as “unbelievable”. “We haven’t caught up with the owner of the little one yet but we’re not 100 per cent sure at this stage. The dogs were from different owners that’s for sure.” John says it is quite common for a larger and a smaller dog to go wandering together if they are not in a controlled environment. “The dog owners are liable and the most important thing is that we get these dogs because the ones that tear into sheep

do it again, there’s no doubt about that.” A dog that has been involved in a sheep attack may have wool caught in their teeth for days after the attack. Having reported the incident right away, Ian believed changes needed to be made to bylaws surrounding dog control. “They have to take responsibility. This is a serious issue. There could have been people involved. People with uncontrolled dogs or unchipped dogs, well they shouldn’t be allowed them. That dog could be in another packed sheep lot shortly.”

the ITAB [Industry Training Association Building] Apprentice of the Year challenge in Blenheim, beating seven other apprentices from around the country. The former Garin College student has been an apprentice for three years now and while he spent most of that time on site he also attended block courses at NMIT for three weeks, and it was there where he was asked if he would like to enter the challenge. One of eight locals to make it through to the regional challenge, Hamish says he had to build a practical wall, demonstrate knowledge in timber framing, cavity systems and “just general building stuff ” in Nelson before being named as the winner. As the regional champion, Hamish then got an all expenses paid trip to Blenheim for the national final – which coincided with the Certified Builders Association of New

Zealand’s annual conference. Assuming the national final would be all practical, hands-on work would actually be false. Hamish says it was all about public speaking. “It’s not our natural forte you know, we’re not public people. This was held at the same time as the Certified Builders conference which had all these workshops and as part of the challenge I had to introduce one of the workshops and explain to all the people in it what they could expect to learn and implement these things into their business.” Taking notes throughout the workshop, Hamish then had to get up and do a speech at the end. “That was quite challenging. I was really nervous but you just have to give it a go, don’t you?” As the winner of the competition, Hamish earned himself $7000 worth of prizes. “It’s reassuring to know you’re doing okay at your job which is quite a nice thing.”

Phillip Rollo Heslops Group staff got to throw their gumboots off and put their feet up last week, organising a post-flood clean up party for Wakatu Industrial Estate workers. Jan Aberhart, the company’s general manager, says some of the clean up is ongoing, while insurance pricing was yet to be completed. While business was back to normal within a matter of days, there is still a lot of extra work created by the flood that had not been sorted. “We’re still trying to deliver customer service because your customers come first but if you’re busy anyway where is the additional capacity to go and do all the other stuff? It just takes an enormous amount of effort,” says Jan. “We’re still cleaning up from flood damage and that will take awhile. Carpet had to be lifted and walls had to be cut open to dry up and we’re still trying to get new equipment.” Jan says about 50 people from various businesses attended the party, while others were also

And I know other businesses had people come in and help. We had a woman that used to do our cleaning years ago and said that we might need a hand.” The reason for hosting the party was they needed to have a bit of a get-together. “Take our gumboots off and just say ‘well here we are, in spite of the odds we’re still up and going’.” Amanda Dawkins from Pic’s says the factory closed for about five days after the flood and around 140 bags of pea-

nuts were ruined, but other than that it was business as normal. “But because we’re a food manufacturer we’re still doing tests, cleaning and sanitising,” she says. Grant Sutton from Water Blaster Solutions says he is still battling insurance and finding things that were damaged. “We’re back trading though and we made a few sales out of it which was good. We lost a full week but a month down the track it’s back to normal.” Following the flood, Grant says there is a “real sense of community” across the businesses. “You have to admit it’s probably the better side of it.”

Housing density discussed A changing demographic has Tasman District Council curious as to whether it should step in and create higher density housing options or just let the market dictate itself. The council is currently seeking public feedback on encouraging and facilitating higher density development as it

believes there is a need for more affordable options. Generally most properties in Richmond are 600m2 with a three to four bedroom home situated on it. “This could be quite simply as having an attached self sufficient dwelling used by an aging parent or it could be two or three units on the 600m2 with a shared

Garin College stars on stage again

Garin College has defended the Nelson ASB Stage Challenge, with its performance ‘Monstrous’ winning the competition’s open division. The school won the competition last year, although in 2012 perennial favourites Nayland and Waimea College did not enter, making Monday night’s win that much more significant. The story behind Monstrous, which was performed by a smaller than usual cast, touches on a young couple partying and being exposed to drugs. The theme explored ‘you are not you when you’re on drugs’, taking the audience on a journey where the couple experience the pain and torture drugs bring. Design judge Jane Winter, who was on a three person panel, says the performance was dynamic. “I loved their concept and the high dramatic tension throughout their performance – a very smooth and polished performance,” she says. Following the performance, representa-

Do you need a pre purchase inspection report for your insurance company, your bank or your own piece of mind? Not sure about the new changes to the code of conduct for real estate agents? Local father and son duo Tony and Ross Walker from The HABiT building inspection team are here to help educate agents, sellers and buyers who aren’t that sure about the “potential defects” clause. As a local Registered Master Builder and Licensed Building Practitioner Tony can help you get up to speed with identifying potential building defects and solutions to fix them. The recent changes to the real estate agent code of conduct state that if a licensee who is ‘reasonably competent’, becomes aware of a ‘potential defect’ in a property, or if the agent asks the vendor if there are any hidden or underlying defects, the agent should warn either the seller or the buyer to get an independent report. Tony can help educate anyone who would like assistance in this grey area. “This is an area I want to be able to help assist in any way I can to help agents, sellers and buyers within a 24 hour turnaround period, not just assess defects, but to provide successful remedies or solutions for them.” Talk to Tony and Ross at The Habit, with 75 years in the building industry between them, they provide comprehensive building reports in language you understand.

A ‘75 Morris Mini being restored and raffled off for charity is on track for an October completion. Bob Croy, one of the men behind the Bowater Motor Group-sponsored project, believes the new canary yellow paint job and the installation of an engine means it is ahead of schedule. “I’d like to have it done so it can go sit around with some of our sponsors and give it some coverage. But it’s well and truly on track,” says Bob. “It can go down to the upholsters which is the next step. We still need to do some wiring but hopefully that will be well on its way by next Tuesday. But I’m extremely happy with how it’s all going.” The Morris Mini will be raffled off for three months prior to the Relay for Life in March next year. It was at this event that the original idea began. Bob and some friends had raised $2500 for the Cancer Society at the Relay for Life but were still $3500 short on the highest total, raised by anoth-

So the decision was made to restore a car, hoping it could raise $10,000 at the next event. “As a group, the ‘Caffeine Crew from Wakefield’ who all have coffee together on a Tuesday morning, we decided to do the Relay for Life. I said how the hell could we raise $10,000 or more and kicked this idea around. “That’s where it started on that morning so we went out and looked for a car. Now we’re hoping to get the old owner back behind the wheel when it’s finished. She’s in for a hell

of a surprise.” The group of four friends behind the project all come from different trades, with Bob being the only mechanic. He says no one in the group had ever restored a Mini before. “I’ve worked on them all my life but there were parts of this I had never ever touched. A lot of this is quite new to me and some of the work on the suspension I’ve never had to do.” Bob says he is thankful for all of the sponsors that have offered their services to the project.

Airport extension won’t fly Calls for Jetstar to start flying to and from Nelson have been grounded. Last week a Facebook page was set up to encourage budget airline Jetstar to fly into Nelson. The page has attracted hundreds of fans but Jetstar says it will not be able to fly into the top of the south unless the runway is extended to cater for its jet aeroplanes. The current length of the Nelson Airport runway is 1347 metres. The kind of planes that Jetstar fly in New Zealand need a minimum length of around 1600 metres. The airline does have planes in Australia that

could land in Nelson but it does not want to take them off those routes and move them across the Tasman. Lengthening the runway could cost up to $60 million for the ratepayer-owned airport and is only one major stumbling block for the move. Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive Kaye McNabb says even if the runway was extended the likelihood of jets flying commercial flights to and from Nelson is highly unlikely. The busiest route for the region is to Wellington and flying jets on that route, or

Students graduate from the Nelson Ark The Nelson Ark’s latest Apart Programme concluded on Friday with all of the participants demonstrating their dogs’ newly learned skills in front of a small audience. The programme matches a young person, mostly at college age, with a previously unwanted dog under a trainer’s guidance. They are responsible for training it over the eight week course and co-ordinator Karen Howieson says dog training teaches discipline, responsibility and problem solving techniques. “Our philosophy is compassionate action and the programme we offer is a win-win for everyone involved,” says Karen. “What we saw was much more confident young people being able to work dogs in front of an audience and those skills they learn will go on to be applicable in other areas of their lives.” All of the dogs, which were indentified by the Tasman Dog Control services or by SPCA, are up for adoption having been through the training process. Tech fundraiser Students from St Paul’s Catholic School’s Tui class have come up with a tech-savvy fundraiser. At the school, which allows students to use computers devices in class if they have one at home, some of the children have been creating QR Codes for businesses who can then use them on advertisments and business cards. The money raised will go towards the school’s new multi-function centre. “It’s great for the businesses and a great experience for the kids too. Look for the Good Wood tick When you choose a Good Wood supplier, you’re opting for a trusted source of dry firewood that will burn well, keeping your home warmer and our air cleaner. Firewood with a moisture content of more than 25% is banned in Tasman and Nelson. Green wood that has recently been cut or wood that has not been stored properly or for long enough does not meet this requirement. The Tasman District Council’s Good Wood scheme means participants have agreed to supply Nelson and Tasman householders with either seasoned firewood, suitable for immediate use during the winter months, or green (unseasoned) firewood delivered sufficiently far in advance of winter so that, if properly stored by the user, it will be seasoned for use in the winter months. Ideally, this would be before Christmas for the following winter. When ordering seasoned

When the system is generating more electricity than is needed, during the day when no one is home for example, you could be paid for the surplus. Vitamin C

Vitamin C has a huge role to play in our body and its processes. The more research that is done on this vitamin, the more we learn about how important it is to our body. It is a water-soluble vitamin, which means that our bodies can’t store it therefore we have to get what we need from food or supplements. There are different types of Vitamin C available, a low acid formula is better tolerated by people with sensitive stomachs. the perfect place to celebrate. Don’t let the flu knock you Did you know Influenza (or the flu) is spread by droplets which can travel up to 2 metres and can survive on surfaces for up to a week. People with pre-existing health conditions are most at risk of getting influenza. Active healthy people can also get the flu. The flu is more than just a ‘bad cold’, influenza is much more severe. At its worst, influenza can put you in hospital and can even be fatal. In most cases, the flu can keep you in bed for a week or two, and drain your energy keeping you from work, sport or just about anything that requires leaving the house. Get immunised. Seasonal influenza vaccinations are recognised as being the single most effective way of reducing the impact of seasonal influenza. Prevention is best so call your doctor or medical clinic. You may be eligible for a free vaccination if you are; aged 65 years or over, regularly use an asthma preventer, have a medical condition e.g. diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer etc, or if you are pregnant. Richmond edge past Garin

Richmond’s Tarnia Pilcher and Garin College’s Giorgia Leonard contest the ball during Saturday’s game. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Garin College Hangar 58 Senior A came up against stern opposition when it met Richmond Robbie’s Beer Cafe Black in the third round of Grade 2 at Saxton Courts on Saturday. Garin settled early against their more seasoned opposition. The college girls had lovely flow through court and played some great lines. The ball was stress free getting into the shooters, Olivia Nott and Sjaan Hungerford who impressed with a number of long range shots. Garin went into the first break with a 10-7 advantage. Richmond lifted their work rate in the second period, particularly in defence. The through court pressure was tight as it stifled Garin’s punch in attack and they struggled to get quality ball to their shooters. Wing defence, Tarnia Pilcher did a power of work outside the circle, while circle defenders Imogen Smith and Janelle McGregor were torrid on defence. They pressured the shot

which proved to be effective and Janelle rebounded strongly to deny the second opportunity. The defence paid dividends as they outscored the college girls 11-5, which included a run of five unanswered goals. Garin coach, Sarah Rankin introduced Poppy Restieaux at wing attack in the third quarter and she made an immediate impact. Poppy was a great option off the line and took the majority of the centre passes, she also worked hard to offer the second phase and drove well to the space. Centre, Makaila Powick was industrious through court on both attack and defence. Emma Greep at goal keep read the play well, while Phoebe Harris was steady on the wing before moving into the circle. Phoebe was keen to hunt for scrap ball and pulled in three well timed

intercepts. It was Richmond’s superb conversion rate, missing only one goal in the second half which paved the way for the win. Goal attack Melissa Marfell was the dominate shooter (22 from 24) while Toni Lindsay (11 from 13) netted some fine long shots. While there was a wee bit of ball thrown out the back court by Richmond, it will soon come together as their timing improves. Centre, Anna Johansen presented well and was available through court as a useful link. There was nothing in it in the second half as Richmond claimed the third quarter 8-7, while Garin finished strongly to win the final quarter 9-7. While Richmond would be happy with their 35-30 win they still remain behind Garin on the standings in third place. Suburban Blue are the leading contenders for promotion with two games to play.

Waimea goes back to school to beat Marist Brent “Stew” Stuart

Ben Jeffrey breaks through the Nelson defence on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Last minute heartbreak

A last minute try to Shane Christie, converted by David Havili, has seen Nelson remain unbeaten in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy and on track to top Pool A. The 28-26 win over Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys at Trafalgar Park on Saturday means Galbraith Nelson retain the Noel Barton Trophy, a piece of silverware its coach says is one of the most important

of the season. Waimea, will be resigned to second place in the pool, unless Nelson is overturned in its remaining two games. Having led by ten points for most of the game, Waimea looked shell shocked after full-time, perhaps ruing missed opportunities with Billy Guyton, who has had an otherwise strong season since returning, skewing two penalty kicks.

With Saturday being club day for Marist their senior B team chose to host Waimea at Garin College. The battle saw the tables third placed team Waimea take on the lowest place Marist, with the points table in mind you could be forgiven for making a pre-conceived however the game through out some surprises. In fact first blood went to the underdogs 10 minutes in when Marist was awarded a penalty for WOB holding on after the tackle. This was like a blow to the jaw line of the red and whites who responded within a couple of minutes by way of a try to Lee McBrydie, Luke Thelin converted. Marist demonstrated they where here to stand proud and swiftly responded with another converted penalty in the 15th minute, score now at 7-6 in Waimea’s favour. Keeping the ding dong score board moving WOB opted for a shot at the posts when Marist where penalized for their turn at holding on in the tackle, Luke lined it up but his kick was wayward. With 20 minutes gone, the WOB boys stung Marist by putting together some nice passage’s of play. A great off-load gathered by halfback Mitchell Bateman to score under the post, bruising number 8 Sha’non bustled through the Marist forward pack to dot down and Lee McBry-

Women hammer depleted Riwaka Julia Law

This week our Waimea ladies travelled to Riwaka to play the newest team in the senior women’s competition. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Riwaka were unable to field a full side, but with both teams keen to keep the competition alive and have a good game, Waimea supplied five players to make

SG

up two full teams of 15, with no reserves. The first half was very much an attacking game for Waimea, however Riwaka’s fierce intensity and determination, caught them off guard a couple of times, forcing Waimea to scramble on defensive play. A quick shuffle of players at half time saw two equally matched sides come out to play in the

SG

second half. Determination and commitment shown by both teams paid off and in the spirit of fair play there was no love lost between the sides. Players of the day went to Anna Bradley and Joaane Davis. Special mention also to Zoe Johnson for racking up 45 points for the game, 26 for Waimea and 19 against them. Final score, Waimea 88 vs Riwaka 26.

die a link in the chain to score also, these three tries where all converted by Luke. Making the score at the break of 28-6. After already having a four try bonus point by halftime, WOB started the second half ready to add more pain to Marist by way of a impressive run by prop Kerry Walker to give a great off-load to Mitchell for another try, unconverted by Luke score was 33-6. Next blood belonged to Marist as the WOB boys appeared to be resting on the early scoring, the Marist forwards rewarded with a try. Unfortunately for Marist both these tries where unconverted, score 33-16. With WOB making many changes, play dulled down somewhat and become unsettled, both teams merely existed for the next period. That was until five minutes left on the clock when WOB forwards keep the ball in hand to drag in the Marist defense creating a great platform for the Waimea backs. Luke ceased the opportunity, broke the line to score. The passage of play belonged to Marist when after a penalty they forced their way over the line and converted the last points of the game, final score 40-23 to Waimea. Strong leadership was rewarded by player of the day honours to lock and captain Tim Fensom. This week Waimea return to Jubilee Park to take on Nelson.

Waimea Water Augmentation Project – Lee Valley Dam Project Management – Request for Proposal

Richmond Unlimited AGM

The Waimea Water Augmentation Project is a joint Community/Tasman District Council initiative. The project aims to ensure that there is enough water in the Waimea catchment to meet the current and future needs of irrigators, industry and urban users, as well as manage water quantity and quality for cultural, recreational and environmental reasons. The project has many facets – planning and regulatory, infrastructure, community and stakeholder relations as well as funding. The proposed Lee Valley Dam is the key physical work. The Waimea Water Augmentation Committee (WWAC) is a community group that was formed to help resolve the acute water shortage problems of the Waimea Basin. Tasman District Council has provided the WWAC with project management, coordination and administration resources to date. The project has reached a point where the scale and complexity demands further dedicated project management in particular areas. Council is now looking to appoint a Project Manager to work with Council, the WWAC, water users and the community on a number of specific tasks that need to be progressed as part of the overall project. These tasks are likely to be spread over a two year period. The project management task is strongly focused:

5.30 pm, Tuesday 9 July 2013. Meeting to take place at Miles of Food, Queen Street, Richmond. For further information, please email info@richmondunlimited.co.nz

Rural decisionmakers invited to participate in survey Landcare Research – Manaaki Whenua is conducting a survey of farmers, foresters, and other rural decision makers in late June and July. This nation-wide survey is Internetbased and is intended to take 15-20 minutes to complete. Topics include demographics, farm/forestry characteristics, succession plans, risk tolerance, profitability, information sources, farming/forestry objectives, management practices, and attitudes. This survey is independent of the Council. The combined results will be made publicly available. Landcare Research plans to invite approximately 700 rural decision makers in the Tasman district to participate in the survey. If you would like to participate, please send an email to surveys@landcareresearch.co.nz.

Make a Beanie competition 2013

• Land access and purchase • Resource Management Act matters including providing support for the resource consent process • Managing budget and work plans • Conditional tendering for the Dam • Governance and ownership arrangements • Stakeholder relationships and engagement. This project is a major one and if the Lee Valley Dam proceeds it will be the largest community project the District has undertaken, based on likely cost. We are looking for a person, or a consultancy, with the skills to take this project to the point where a decision is taken to proceed (or not) with the Dam. A copy of the Request for Proposal is available www.tasman.govt.nz or by contacting Pamela White at Tasman District Council pamela.white@tasman.govt.nz

Motueka Arts Council latest project is the Make a Beanie competition. A fun activity for winter! Knitters, sewers, needle workers can use any materials to construct a beanie during the next couple of months. Any ages can enter and there are multiple categories. It is hoped to display the Beanies during the Motueka Festival of Lights-mid July to mid August. Entries close 25 July 2013. Prizes will be awarded to the best in each category. Entry forms at Potters Patch and Needleworx in High St; - download from www. motuekaonline.org.nz or email motuekaartscouncil@gmail.com for a form.

Ecofest 2013 17-18 August 2013 at the Trafalgar Centre. Standholder packs available NOW. Earlybird deadline is 7 June 2013. Email Ecofest@xtra.co.nz for more information.

Proposals must be submitted by 19 June 2013.

Consent to take water subject to water metering The Measurement and Reporting of Water Takes Regulations 2010 requires the reporting of water use for the whole calendar year 1 July to 30 June each year, rather than just the summer season. However for the majority of “seasonal water users”, to assist you in meeting the Regulation requirement of weekly readings during winter, Council will accept a final reading and duplicate this reading through until October in preparation for summer water use. Telling the Council when water use ends (autumn) and recommences (spring/summer) is very important so that the Council discretion can work. For consent holders who use water all year around e.g. industry and frost protection, you are required to make water meter returns every week. For consent holders who have ceased water use please make a final reading. For those who have already let the Council know you have ceased water use, thank you. If you commence water use before October, please contact the Council on 03 543 8400 or visiting any Council Office.
