Dying sheep were crawling around the farm when Peter Phipps responded to a dog attack last Tuesday. The horrific incident at the rural Mahana property, which is leased by Ian Parkes, was being likened to a war-zone by Peter, the farm’s manager. Peter had a message left on his answer phone by a neighbour that said four of the sheep had been attacked. The actual tally eventually rose to 56. “I went straight over there,” he says. “There were either dead sheep in ponds or sheep wandering around with their heads half eaten. I’ve never seen anything like this. It was like walking around in a warzone with half shot men trying to crawl to safety.” Describing the scenes he witnessed, Peter kept saying he had never seen anything like this, despite previously living down south where snow storms would

kill flocks of sheep. “The worse thing about it is most of them were still alive and we had to put them down.” Ian says one of the dogs involved had been indentified as belonging to a neighbour and the “emotional” owner had been spoken to. However, he still believes there was another dog involved as Peter had spotted at least two. “[The second dog] is a small white one or whitish.” Tasman Dog Control Service’s John Bergman, who is contracted to the Tasman District Council, says the owners of the dogs are liable to cover the estimated $8000 compensation of the dead sheep and confirmed that both dogs will be put down.
