Door knocking scam Matt McCrorie Reporter

A Richmond Police officer is urging caution as the area has recently seen an increase in scams, both online and door to door.
Kyle Abbot, Richmond Police Community Constable, says that the elderly in particular are being targeted, and that the number of people approaching the police who have been scammed is becoming more frequent. One such scam is the simple act of door knocking.
Kyle says that for the past few weeks scammers have been travelling around Richmond, knocking on doors asking for money, pretending to be collecting for the Blind Foundation. One middle-aged man has been asking for cash on behalf of the blind foundation.
A spokesperson for The Blind Foundation said that while the foundation has collectors in the Tasman area at present, they are not collecting money; they are only trying to sign people up for a length of time to sponsor a puppy. These collectors will have a Red
Vest/Jacket, an ID Card and an IPA They are calling at homes from 12:30pm to 7:30pm. If you have someone who comes to your door requesting money, report them to the Police

Des is pictured here with the pupils from Tapawera Area School, after an ‘inspiring’ talk he gave about the process of creative writing, using tricks that he picked up from his 40 year career as a science teacher to entertain and inspire. Des’ new book, ‘To Trap a Thief ’ is set in the Nelson / Tasman Region and students from the school said it was really cool to see a landscape they recognised. Photo: Supplied.

“They deserve a pay rise. But more information on what they’re struggling with and more consultation with the parents as to how we can support them would be good.”
“They do deserve more money, and a lot of other jobs do too, doctors, nurses, etc. A lot of people have important jobs in the community and should be paid fairly.”
‘I think teachers are under resourced. There are a lot of changes that need to be made in the system, especially with large classroom sizes and teachers working long hours.’
‘On the one hand they do have quite good hours and school holidays, but if they are under resourced they are working a lot in their own time and not being paid any more.’

immediately on 111. Mal Drummond, Elder Abuse Advisor for Age concern Nelson, says that if someone asks you for money, look for the logo. They should be wearing a vest or jacket with the logo of the charity that they’re representing. They should have a name badge. “If you’re unsure, or if you’ve never heard of the charity and it seems risky, just close the door.” The region has also seen an increase in online and phone scams. The number one thing for people to remember is that no legitimate bank or organisation will ask you to do anything with your money over the phone, or over email. Kyle says the easiest way to
avoid scams like this is to simply go to the bank. Just go into the bank and talk to a real person, face to face, Kyle says. “People are losing their savings, thousands of dollars, simply because they’re trusting.” Often a simple act like that can save people from losing thousands. One scam that police are aware of currently, is people claiming to be from telecommunications companies such as Spark and requesting bank account details. The message from police is simple – if anyone asks you to do anything with your money or bank account over the phone, just hang up. Mal says that elderly people are often the target of these scams, as they are often more
trusting by nature and vulnerable through isolation and can offer suffer more greatly than a younger person. “The difference is that if you’ve living on the pension and you lose your life savings, the chance of being able to recover your savings is very low.” Caroline Budge, the manager of Age Concern, says that if you get approached by someone asking for money or to do anything with your finances, whether it’s at your door, over the phone, or online, talk to someone else first, a friend or a family member. Elderly people who are unsure can even call Age Concern to ask for advice. Caroline says that, at the end of the day, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Concert fundraiser success Matt McCrorie The forest fire concert was a success for everyone involved. As well as being a fantastic way of saying thanks to all the first responders and volunteers who helped during the Pigeon Valley forest fire back in February, the concert was also able to cover its own costs and raise additional money for the Mayoral Relief Fund. A cheque for $2000 will be presented to the council to go towards the fund, with Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne saying that “Any money that was raised surplus to cost is just awesome.” As well as that, the concert was able to cover its own costs with donations from business and
money raised from the community. Although the Tasman District Council was involved as one of the organisers, it cost the ratepayers nothing. There were several funds available through the council for a community event, however none was needed due to the massive contribution of local businesses and community volunteers. That money can now be kept and put towards something else. The Waratahs headlined the concert, and even got taken up to the fire site. Barry Saunders of the Waratahs said that the turnout was incredible, and that to get over 3000 people to a fundraising event of this scale “is just fantastic, you don’t see that a lot.”
Richard Kempthorne agreed, and said that he appreciated the fact that the event was organised by people in the local community, as a way of giving back to those who had worked hard for all of us. The reason the event was such a success, he said, was because “people really wanted to show their appreciation to those who had helped during the fire.” Steve Page, the event organiser, said that the best part about the event was the community getting together to support and thank those involved with the fires. “We really enjoyed doing it, the biggest buzz was the businesses that gave freely, that was really great.”

New group urges caution on planting

Farmers are becoming concerned that more productive farmland will be used to plant trees. While the government continues to move ahead with its one billion trees scheme, farmers throughout the country are raising concerns that it may come at a cost. A new organisation 50 Shades of Green, say they are concerned about the thousands of hectares of productive farming land that have already been converted to forestry in the last year. The group was formed recently by farmers from across the country, and they soon plan to march on parliament. According to the group, it’s not just steep hill country being planted, but also productive farmland. 50 Shades of Green fear that the government’s tree planting programme will “make the zombie towns, that economists predicted, a harsh reality.” The tree planting scheme was one of the government’s

goals that it set in 2017, to plant a billion trees by 2027. The scheme, overseen by Shane Jones, minister of Forestry and Regional Economic Development, is being used as a way to grow the regions and create jobs while also offsetting carbon emissions and growing the forestry industry. While they are not opposed to the government’s goal of planting trees and creating jobs, 50 Shades of Green spokesperson Mike Butterick says that they are against
“highly productive farmland being lost to food production forever.” Referencing the Paris accords climate agreement, the group says that, while moving towards a more carbon neutral economy means increasing the ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, it should be done in a manner that does not threaten food production. “The harsh reality is that the Provincial Growth Fund

isn’t helping the provinces but contributing to their destruction”, Mark says. “I don’t believe the government has the faintest clue what its programmes are doing to the provinces. Our view is that they’re a wrecking ball hitting food production and rural employment.” However, local MP Damien O’Connor says that while there are one or two examples of this happening, the government is not aware of a mass shift in the types of land that are being sold. The type of land being sold is “something we are very mindful of ” Damien says. The programme is focused on putting the right tree in the right place, and Damien insists that the areas that are being chosen are better suited to planting a range of trees. While there are a couple of examples of productive land being turned into blanket forest it is “not the norm.” Damien said that he isn’t aware of any productive land being sold for tree planting anywhere in the Top of the South.
Introducing Pam Wood
Programme Lead Specialist, Viticulture & Winemaking Pam Wood brings a lifetime of horticulture and primary industries experience to the Viticulture and Winemaking programme at NMIT. Wood was raised in a farming family on a lifestyle property in rural Northland where growing organic fruit and vegetables was a way of life. “This absolutely inspired my love of horticulture and awoke my curiosity around plants,” she says. Since then, she has helped to teach horticulture courses in the community and has developed and managed horticulture programmes at tertiary institutions around the country, including Lincoln University and Manukau Institute of Technology. Wood says she’s excited to apply her knowledge and passion to the Viticulture and Winemaking programme at NMIT. “I’m looking forward to building on an already healthy programme that has the potential to be taken out to other areas of New Zealand and offshore using our online capabilities, along with the opportunity to create something very special in our own vineyard going forward at NMIT.” She says Viticulture and Winemaking industry is ripe with opportunities for students and the
NMIT programme is designed to prepare them for the workforce. “It is an exciting time to be in this industry. The old perception of the industry having only hard, manual, repetitive labouring jobs is finally disappearing with the realisation that viticulture and winemaking is full of technology, science, business, logistics and more - there are so many opportunities. This is an industry in which you never stop learning and there can be great financial rewards for those who apply themselves and are not afraid to work hard.” Wood says she hopes to provide students with “accessibility and flexibility”. “I want them to have great access to a team of highly knowledgeable and well-regarded lecturers who are connected with this industry. “I want each student to feel their learning journey is individually tailored to meet their needs and provides them with the flexibility to switch between full and part-time, on campus or online learning as their life journey dictates the need to change.” She says she’s thrilled to relocate to the Marlborough region and plans to enjoy the climate, amazing local foods and wines, and the lack of traffic compared to Auckland. Solid reviews for child-free burger bar Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A local burger restaurant caused quite a stir last year when it made the decision to ban kids, but owner Fabian Prioux says that the outcome couldn’t have been better. Fabian, the owner of Abbey Road Burgers, decided to ban kids from his restaurant in November last year after he became frustrated with all the damage they caused. Anyone with kids under the age of 12 with them was politely told to go elsewhere. Kids covering the walls of his restaurant with tomato sauce and destroying tables and dinnerware with knives just didn’t seem worth all the time and effort that it took to clean up and replace. For Fabian, it’s all about the food. “I love to eat good food and I’m French, so I just want to make a burger of a really high calibre.” So Fabian decided to change his policy, so he could focus all his energy on making “really good food.” While some may have been frustrated with his policy, the restaurant is now being praised as having some of the best burgers in
the region. The burger bar has become a popular date-night spot for parents wanting to have a night away from kids, as well as becoming popular with those who work with kids during the day, hosting a number of teachers’ functions. “When they’re working hard with kids all day, sometimes they want a break.” Although some other business owners warned him against the move, Fabian says that the decision has been met with mostly positive reviews. “We always get people saying ‘congratulations for your decision.’” Fabian says that the response from the public has been about 85 per cent positive, with only a small amount of negative feedback coming from the vocal minority. It hasn’t all been easy though, as Fabian explains that he decided to shut down the buisness facebook page because of a slew of hateful and racist comments. The poor reviews left on facebook by people who had never been to the restaurant was the thing that confused Fabian the most. “These people are saying nasty and even racist things, but they have never even eaten at our res-

They haven’t tried my food.” While there are always going to be one or two people who disagree, the reviews online have been mostly positive, with the restaurant gaining an impressive four and a half stars on TripAdvisor. While some may still be upset with the child-free policy, many of the positive reviews comment
on the ‘ambience’ of the restaurant and on the taste and freshness of the food. One user, Gemma, wrote “To be honest we weren’t going to ever dine here on principle, but the hubby twisted my arm to give the place a try…. I am glad we did… It was totally amazing, devoured the whole lot and hubby thought his burger was incredible!” Another user, Karin, commented
that “the burgers are just the best! Very good value too; the burgers are enormous” And its not just users on TripAdvisor that seem to be happy, with the restaurant recently being awarded the TripAdvisor 2019 Certificate of Excellence. Despite the stir for his no child policy, Fabian says that his focus is still on the food, and he thinks that he might be a solution to keeping all food lovers happy. The opening of a new bar next door might give burger-loving families some relief. Fabian says that they recognise the concerns of families that want to bring their children out for a tasty meal, and while they’re not changing their policy any time soon, the soon opening Pioneer Garden Bar will be collaborating with Abbey Road Burgers. “People who want to bring their kids can sit at the bar next door and can order any of our burgers and we will bring them over for the family to enjoy.” The new premises, ‘Pioneer Garden Bar’, is set to open in the coming months. For those burger lovers who have seen the kid-free policy, and are still unsure, Fabian’s message is simple, “Come and try the food.”

Heritage section of the Tasman District Libraries website. David Kemp will be talking about the Roil family from 12.00pm-1.00pm on Thursday, 6 June in the Constance Barnicoat Room at Richmond Library. The talk is free and anyone is welcome to attend.
Traffic surveys With a larger focus on reducing serious injuries and deaths on the roads, central government is investing in road safety improvements as well as maintaining appropriate travel speeds. Both the Tasman District Council and the Nelson City Council have begun work reviewing current speed limits. A council spokesperson says that “for speed limits to be effective, they need to be underpinned by community support.” Considering this, the council wants to hear from road users as to what they think are safe speed limits on different types of roads in the region. An online survey is available for people to have their say on what they think is safe for their local roads. This feedback will help inform the council as they review their speed limits. Anyone wanting to participate in the survey must do so before Friday 14 June. It can be accessed on the council website, or by following this link, https://www.surveymon key.com/r/speedsurvey2019
Tips to save energy and money this winter Simple changes to the way you use electricity can save you a lot of money. It’s surprising how even small changes can result in worthwhile savings.
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) website has dozens of tips to reduce your electricity usage and make savings in your home. These include: z
A heated towel rail left on 24/7 can cost you $170 per year. You can buy timers that turn your towel rail on and off automatically at certain times of the day.
z
Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LEDs and save $100 or more a year off your electricity bill.
z
Dripping hot taps can cost you hundreds of dollars a year (depending on how bad the leak is). Replace the washer or fitting – a new washer only costs a few dollars.
z
Take shorter showers. In a household of three, each minute you add to your shower time costs an extra $70 a year.
z
If you have an old, inefficient model of fridge that you use as a second fridge to chill a few drinks, it might surprise you to know it could cost $200 a year to run. Consider turning it off or getting rid of it.
NELSON & TASMAN
z
Use cold washes, unless you have an especially dirty load. Modern washing machines and detergents clean well using cold water. A hot water wash can use 10 times more electricity than a cold wash.
SUNDAY 9 JUNE
z
Draw curtains at dusk to keep the day’s heat in.
z
Stop draughts. Make sure your windows and doors fit their frames. Use draught-stopping tape around windows and doors, and draught-excluders or door snakes along the bottom of doors.
How does it work?
z
Register by going online to the Tasman District or Nelson City Council’s websites (search phrase = Second Hand Sunday). You can also call the Councils’ Customer Service Centres, Ph. Tasman 03 543 8400, Ph. Nelson 03 546 0200.
Use a heater directly in the room you want to heat and keep the door shut (unless you have central heating).
All these tips (and more) on how to save energy at home can be found on EECA’s Energywise website at www.energywise.govt.nz
Heating our homes in the winter can be costly, here are a few ideas to make sure you aren’t losing heat or spending money on less efficient options.
Instructions for the day are also online. Registrations must be in by 10.00 am, Friday 7 June so each Council can publish the list of addresses of people taking part on the website. You can find out about other reuse options on either Council’s website, tasman.govt.nz or nelson.govt.nz

IT course ‘prepared me for Bachelor degree’
Turn your passion for computers into a career
Studying at NMIT has provided Nelson student Declan Ricketts with a stepping stone to a higher education and a future career in IT. The former Nelson College for Boys student left high school without attaining NCEA Level 3 and was at a loss for what to do next. He enjoyed using computers and his mum encouraged him to enrol in the Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4) course at NMIT. “I thought it would be good to give it a go,” Declan said. “The transition from college to NMIT was pretty easy. At NMIT the tutors want you to actually understand what you’re learning.” The certificate is a six-month, intermediate-level programme that prepares students for higher-level study, opening the door to a world of career opportunities in the tech sector. The programme is divided into four courses that teach internationally relevant, transferable skills and knowledge across a range of IT disciplines. It is available face-to-face in Nelson or online, offering students the flexibility to study remotely.
New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials Start 22 July This programme will help you develop essential skills and prepare you for higherlevel study in Information Technology. > Embark on computer hardware design, development, support and management > Develop your understanding of computer software and information networks > Learn in a supportive environment with world class tutors.

A new ‘buzz’ in Richmond
The Richmond CBD is ever growing and being upgraded, and a new mural sees a splash of colour with an important message. One such space that has seen a vibrant, artistic upgrade, is the Home by Orange office on Queen Street, right next to the Richmond Library. The building is ‘abuzz’ with a new award-winning mural by local artist Hannah Starnes. The design ‘Small Things Matter’ was inspired by Hannah’s love for the environment and desire to use this opportunity to share an important message with the people of Richmond. “Street art can give an artist a powerful voice, so I wanted to use this platform for something that really matters”, said Hannah. “I feel passionate about the global plight of bees and thought this could be a great way to raise awareness of the issue.” Hannah says that Bees are incredibly important for the health of the environment, with many different communities and businesses relying on them to pollinate their source of food. Hannah is a local artist who has
spent time in different parts of New Zealand, as well as overseas. She describes herself as “more or less of a self-trained artist” and has been creating an impressive body of work since leaving her job as a rowing coach several years ago. Homes by Orange managing director David Orange was only too happy to support the 3.6 x 10m ‘blank canvas’ for the artwork, on the side of the Homes by Orange office. “It’s a huge enhancement to the building and brings vibrancy and colour to the Richmond townscape”, says Homes by Orange general manager Jo Neale. While the mural adds interest and fun to the town centre, Jo says the message that the mural carries with it is just as important. “More importantly, I hope it speaks to people about the importance of our natural environment, and the need to care for it,” Jo said. “Even small changes can make a difference.” If you haven’t seen it already, you might want to take a stroll or drive down to the Homes by Orange office to see ‘Small things matter’.

Local man and former Survivor competitor, Brad Norris, is using his platform to give back to the community. Photo: Supplied.
Local Survivor gives back Matt McCrorie Brad Norris is a survivor, quite literally. Last year he went on the journey of a lifetime and appeared on the popular TV series ‘Survivor NZ.’ Now he’s helping out other survivors, but you might not see these ones feature on TV. No food, no sleep, weather extremes and only the clothes on his back. This was the situation Brad was in when he featured on survivor, but Brad says its also a day to day reality for many who are less fortunate throughout the country. Brad says that his experience on the show was one of the most challenging times in his life, but also one of the most rewarding. “The experience helped me learn more about myself, and about how resilient people can be when they need to be and what is important in life.” Brad, who is originally from Richmond but is currently a PE teach-
er in Auckland, decided that he wanted to use his experience and platform to give back to people in a meaningful way, saying that he wants to use the attention that he’s received from Survivor to “do some good in the community.” “On Survivor I got voted out with the hidden immunity idol in my pocket” Brad was able to auction the idol off on social media and raise $1200, most of which he donated to charity. With a few hundred dollars left over, he decided to create care packages for the poor. “A random act of kindness can make a lasting impression on someone and can make a big change for those less fortunate.” Brad said his experience had made him more empathic to people struggling to get through the day. “It felt right to put my ‘struggles’ that I had on TV to the side, and to do something about people really struggling with everyday life.”

Poor eyesight no barrier for bowls champion John Monk was proud to represent New Zealand on the world stage. He was even prouder to gain a silver medal, in the international blind bowls tournament. John, who has been playing bowls for around 4 years now, is almost completely blind. But that was no barrier for him travelling to Israel and gaining a silver medal in the international tournament. He’d been to the national blind bowls tournament a few times as his skills increased, and after coming runner-up in the last national tournament in Christchurch, he decided that he was up to giving the international tournament a crack. Blind players from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, England and Scotland travelled to Israel to compete in the sport for 6 days in mid-May, John travelled with a group of 10 from New Zealand to compete, along with players and
their directors. John played indoor bowls while he could see, and he said he knew the fundamentals. “I’ve always played a lot of sport; our family is a sports family. So being able to keep doing something like this is just fantastic.” While John may have a knack for bowls, he doesn’t do it alone. Of equal importance to his success is Bev Boucher, who travelled all the way to Israel with him. Bev is John’s bowls director, setting him up on the green and telling him what he needs to do. She puts him in position, tells him how far he needs to bowl. Above all, Bev was blown away by the calibre of players they encountered. “It was our first time at a tournament like that, its incredible how they bowl. They are just as good as bowlers with sight.” While the tournament was fantastic, John said that the trip was ‘one in a lifetime.’
An avid history lover, getting to experience Israel was “totally surreal” for John. The churches, ancient markets, - he even went swimming in the Dead Sea. But the highlight, John says, was representing his country at a sport he loves. He even got a bit teary when he found out that he won the silver medal. “They told us and I didn’t really believe them. I’ve never won a silver medal or anything like that in my life.” He even insisted that Bev go and double-check that he won, just in case. The tournament was no walk in the park either, with 10 games, all 3 hours each, in temperatures above 30 degrees. Now an international silver medal holder, Bev said that John should be an encouragement for other visually-impaired people to continue to be active and get out there. “There’s still a sport out there for the visually-impaired.”

Local adventure tale inspires young readers FROM PAGE 1 Inspired, amused and entertained. These are just a few of the words that kids from Tapawera school had after being visited by the author Des Hunt, who travelled to the school to give a presentation on his new book, ‘To Trap a Thief,’ an adventure story set in the Nelson-Tasman region. Des Hunt is an award-winning
young-adult fiction writer. He began his career as science teacher, a job he held for over 40 years, publishing two science textbooks in the 70’s and 80’s. Des’s books feature a strong environmental message that highlights the unique features of New Zealand’s natural fauna. Many of his novels are set in locations familiar to young kiwi readers, such as Fox Glacier, Golden Bay, Westport, and this time the
setting of the Nelson and Tasman regions were familiar to the young readers at Tapawera School. While some kids aren’t as interested in books as you might think, Des had quite a few tricks from his years as a science teacher up his sleeve to keep even the youngest children engaged. He used these to talk about the art of storytelling, and even inspired the kids with examples of failure
followed by success. “How many of us knew that Dr. Seuss had one story rejected 27 times before succeeding as a writer?” “It’s not often we are lucky enough to have role models of this calibre happy to spend their time with us,” said Larry Bonington, the school’s librarian. “When Des came to visit, I was really excited. He came to help teach us how to write a captivat-
Nelson Matters
Financial management is at the core of good government. Labour blew its economic credibility last week in announcing it is going to break its own Budget Responsibility Rules by raising more debt. The public is naturally cautious of Labour over finance because of a long history in Government of big spending and reckless borrowing. Labour sought to reassure the public in Opposition by promising strict Budget Responsibility Rules and Rule 2 stated “Labour will reduce debt to 20% of GDP within five years.” Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson called these “cast iron guarantees”. Grant Robertson abandoned this rule last
week saying the debt cap is now 25%. This increase in the debt cap from 20% to 25% of GDP allows Labour to borrow another $15 billion. Nelson and Tasman’s share of this extra debt is $300 million. This is greater than the total debt of both our councils. It equates to $3000 more debt for every man, woman and child in New Zealand. The interest and debt of this extra $15 billion debt has to be paid for in future taxes. New Zealand’s debt is low by international standards. It rose to 25% in 2012 because of the Global Financial Crisis and the $20 billion cost of the Christchurch
earthquakes. National reduced it to 21% by 2017. National’s policy was to get it down to 15% by 2022. We need low debt as a small remote country so we can handle future shocks. Labour was quite entitled to argue at the last election for a 20% debt limit rather than National’s more cautious 15%. The problem is breaking its commitment and undermining the public trust. Labour’s core problem is that it did not properly cost its policies. Remember the controversy when National’s Finance Minister Steven Joyce stated that Labour had an $11.7 billion hole. Independent economist Cameron Bagrie and
ing book that keeps your reader engaged. It is nice to read stories about places I have been to,” said Samantha Hatton, a year 9 student. Another student, Rosa Cameron, noted that Des explained the structure of his books in interesting ways by using his background as a science teacher to demonstrate the stages in writing a book. “I think everyone who went to see him enjoyed his visit.”
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
commentator Duncan Garner both said this week’s increase in the debt limit proved that Steven Joyce was right. This financial mess is also the root cause of the strikes in our schools and hospitals. Labour told junior doctors, nurses, teachers and other workers from Opposition that they were being underpaid by 20%. These groups then lodged pay claims for big increases. Labour is now saying in Government they can only afford a fraction of this. The teaching and health professions understandably feel cheated and are striking. Children are losing out on their education with this week’s teach-
er’s strike, the largest ever in history. The hospital strikes have seen thousands of operations cancelled. I am seeing dozens of Nelson patients in awful pain from operations at Nelson Hospital being cancelled and delayed. Labour needs to stop wasting money. Over $500 million is being spent on working groups. $3 billion is being spent on NZ First’s slush fund. $2 billion has been spent on just 82 Kiwibuild homes. $50 million is going on tax breaks for gamblers and the racing industry. New Zealand does not need more debt. Government needs to spend more carefully and wisely. Advt.

Bring your home back to life Renovating can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life. When renovating your home, we understand it can be hard to know where to begin. Working with the experienced team at Colourplus will ensure you achieve results you’ll love for many years to come. Offering a comprehensive design service, Trish and the team will work with you through the many options available to help you select paint colours, wallpapers, fabrics and blinds that reflect your style and budget. Even if you are renovating room by room as your budget allows, think of your home as a whole, and make sure there is flow between spaces old and new by using a complimentary colour pallette. Consider the architectural style of the house, lighting, size, properties and functions of a room when considering colours and finishes. A small room will not necessarily feel larger just by painting it a light colour; natural light and ceiling height also play an important part.

Left to right: George Johnson, Jack McPherson and Fred Fowler. The photo above, dated to around 1904, shows the solution to a famous boundary dispute between Mr George Johnson, a saddler, and Mr Ernest William Hodgson, a storekeeper. George Johnson’s Saddlery shop, in Edward Street Wakefield was discovered to have been built on the boundary between two sections. When this error was discovered, a bitter feud between the two men ensued. Both men refused to sell their land to the other, so it was decided that the only solution would be to saw the building in two along the survey line, and have the pieces jacked apart. In ‘Just Another Row of Spuds’ Marion Stringer writers that the famous boundary line caused a terrific row, that led to J. McPherson and Sons being hired to saw off the section claimed by Hodgson and jack it over 4 feet to his side, leaving a large gap between the two sides of the building for many years. It is a cause of despair in the lives of millions across the globe, causing sickness to many, poor mental health and even death to some. The epidemic I am talking about is stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are by no means a new problem, however their presence in recent years has become more and more evident due to the rise of various pressures such as social media, financial burden, poor home life, stress in the work place, etc. So what is the answer to this problem? Mapua’s Manderson dominates K2M marathon Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Mapua marathon runner Clinton Manderson made the most of some local knowledge to be the fastest person across the finish line at the inaugural K2M multisport event, on Saturday. The 25-year-old used the event between Kaiteriteri and Mapua, which saw more than 700 people take part across various distances on foot or bike, as a lead-up to the Auckland Marathon in October. His time of 3:04:01 was more than 20 minutes faster than his nearest rival over The Great Taste Trail, Brett Ferguson of Witherlea. “Being based in Mapua, I’d often run to Kaiteri and get my parents to pick me up at the end, or I’d have Mum or my partner alongside me. “Once I saw this race I was pretty much hooked because I knew the course like the back of my hand,” he said. “I’m just trying to relax some sore legs now.” Manderson said he got into running two years ago as a cheaper

In the race I thought I ran the
first 25km spot-on but the last 10 or so were pretty tough, with a lack of water on a warm day.” Christchurch’s Nory Lansing was the first woman over the line in a time of 3:31:15. Organiser John McIntyre said he
was thrilled with the numbers taking part. “We had eight different categories and it all played out on the day better than I could have imagined,” he said. “The feedback has been over-
whelmingly positive of the course on The Great Taste Trail and there was a great vibe at the finish line at Mapua. John said that the event would return for its second-year next year, with a May date likely.

Richmond seniors have winning weekend Amid the two losses, a draw, and a win from the Richmond youth teams over the weekend, the successful Helen Ruston Mike Pero Real Estate 14th Grade Red Devil team beat Nelson Suburbs 2-0 in their third win of the season. The draw was from the other Helen Ruston sponsored U16 Development team when they finished their game 3-3 against FC Nelson. The Green Acres 13th Grade Heat and Point of Sale U16Ninjas unfortunately both lost their games against FC Nelson and Nelson Suburbs respectively. In the afternoon the Fresh Choice Richmond 1st division team took on Nelson College at The Broads. Losing to College in the first round of the season, the young Richmond side found themselves 2-0 down halfway through the first half. However, they dug deep and fought back hard to equalise at the break through an own goal and one to Glen Pearless. Early in the second half, College scored from a corner to go 3-2 up, and shortly after Richmond

striker Sam Slater was taken down in the College goal area. Pearless stepped up and calmly slotted the shot to make the score even again. Then in the last few minutes, with a brilliant turn to lose his defender, Sam Slater finished a great run and Richmond
took the win 4 – 3 in a 7 goal thriller. Coach Clay Wilhelmus has extremely happy for his boys and they hard work they’d put it. And the happiness wasn’t over by just that win, with eight of the nine senior Richmond teams re-
cording wins in a very successful afternoon for the club. Earlier at 1pm the Richmond Hornbills 2nd team beat Wakefield 6-2. The Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Thistle 3rd div team won 3-1 against Motueka, with the Global Wings Travel Hornbills 3rd team had a 4-1 win over Tahuna. The Sprig and Fern Stags managed to beat their Wakefield opponents 5-0, doing well with, at one point having seven players over 50 ye,ars of age on the field at the same time. The Tasman Auto Electrics Bogans 4th team came away with a win, beating the Nelson Suburbs Mighty Ducks 3-0. The one loss occurred when the Fresh Choice 2nd team went down 4-2 against FC Nelson NMIT. Both senior women’s teams had wins, with the About Beauty at Monaco Swans beating Blenheim Valley 2-1 and the Hothouse Foxes winning 1-0 against Golden Bay.

Cold water fishing Dominik Berghamer The snapper seem to have left the bay and most fishing is now focussed around the northern half of d’Urville Island. If you don’t want to head out that far or have a smaller boat there are still plenty of options for some very entertaining fishing. Gurnard, blue cod and tarakihi don’t care about the cold water and make fantastic eating. Try around Pepin Island and in Delaware Bay or tow your boat to Okiwi Bay and head out from there. For tarakihi, find some foul ground and anchor over an adjacent piece of flat bottom. Tie a burley bomb to your anchor rope a few metres above the ground and anchor up. Tarakihi like flasher rigs but make sure you use little hooks, these fish have very small mouths! When they are on the bite they will eat just about anything, small strips of squid work very well.
Tarakihi Light gear will increase the entertainment factor greatly, tarakihi put up an amazing
fight for their size (especially if you’ve hooked two at the same time). Blue cod are a welcome bycatch (if big enough) but if you catch too many (remember, 33cm minimum size, only two per person), try fishing higher up in the water column or move away a bit from the foul ground. For gurnard, try drifting over a sandy or muddy bottom in 5 to 20 metres and use either small softbaits or flasher rigs baited with “fishy” bait. (Squid seems

Runners compete for Wallace Shield A field of 55 runners and walkers enjoyed the varied, undulating cross-country course that Rabbit Island offered, during the first of the three Wallace Shield races, on Saturday. While there were no significant hills, there were many mounds and dips the runners had to push through over the three lap course. Chris Sharland led the runners out at a fast pace and soon the field was well spread out. Halfway through the last lap,
promising young runner Matt Bowen challenged Sharland, took over the lead and won in a slick time of 17min 42 sec. He was 20 seconds ahead of the next best male runner. Sarah Bonoma was the clear winner of the woman’s race in 21min 27sec, with Colette Read finishing second. Daryl Nish set off at speed and maintained the lead throughout the two lap course to come home in 21min 09sec, Elaine Llewellin in 25min

The rise of Catchball in the Richmond area was not without its initial challenges. Nelson Bays Catchball founder and coach Muriel Ronen brought the sport - a social cross between netball and volleyball - back with
her from Israel after she first played it nine years ago. After 12 months growing it in the Nelson Bays region, she wants to see it encourage more women back into sport. “It’s played on the same court as volleyball but we pass and catch the ball,” she said.

Between 15 and 25 there’s a huge drop-off in females playing sport. “This is something any woman can do regardless of whether you’ve picked up a ball of any kind before or not. It’s simple, social and a lot of fun. “I wanted to help connect women to each other, to their com-
munities, and the way to do it is through sport in a supportive environment.” Muriel said over 70 people have taken up the sport so far. “In terms two and three we play on a Friday night at the Badminton Hall from 6pm, and I’m starting up a Mothers’ League which

is where the mothers represent the school that their kids go to.” Those interested can go to Facebook and search Nelson Bays Catchball. Muriel said she will be doing demonstrations at schools, with Waimea College showing interest. For more information email muriel.ronen@gmail.com

Wanderers Sports Club Report Chief Coxon returns as Wanderers earn semi-final spot A feature of the Taylors Wanderers Division One team that travelled to Spring Creek for the match against Moutere was the inclusion of Ryan Coxon, who was generously released by The Chiefs in order to assist his injury - depleted club side. When Coxon loaded up his ute in 2017 to travel south from Cambridge, to ply his propping trade with Tasman and the Wanderers, he could not have imagined that within two years he would be experiencing rugby as a full time career. Brought in as injury cover for The Chiefs he is living the dream in Hamilton, albeit on the very first rung of the professional rugby ladder. He made his debut in Super Rugby against the Hurricanes on March 15 and has now played four games. Learning curve for young player The 21-year-old prop had been in the New Zealand Under-20 team as a tighthead, but is changing to loosehead and admits that the learning curve is quite immense. Coxon relished the opportunity to return to Taylors Wanderers for the match and to see some players in the team who have made a journey similar to his in 2017. Three players are only 18-yearsold and coach Glenn Grant had to field a forward pack that contained six front row players, with Coxon filling the role of hooker and Danny McLauchlan, the regular hooker, at blindside with Maloni Saone at No.8. The average age of the front row was only 22 and it is a testament
at halfback for a number of years and was outstanding whether distributing the ball, goading his forwards or sniping away around the edges. Likewise, Zac Coote who had not played seriously for 6 years, kitted up and threw himself fearlessly into all the action. Big Al Davis ground away in the close exchanges, often providing advice to his backline, but in the final analysis it was just a determined team effort by each player to give his best that saw them home, epitomised by Munro’s confident kick.
to the spirit and resilience of this young group that they were able to finish the round in 3rd place, coming home with a 37-24 victory, securing a semi-final game against Marist next week. Wanderers start disjointed However, the game certainly did not go according to pre-match plans, with Wanderers starting a little disjointed as could be expected, and Moutere fired up for their final game for three weeks, scoring two early tries and leading at half-time 14-10. Clearly some stern words from the coaching staff got Wanderers back on track in the second half where the scrum and maul dominance were eventually turned in to points with Danny Mac, Zyon Holo with a hat-trick, Maloni, Fletcher Matthews and Naki Saumaki all scoring tries. Fittingly, Coxon was awarded player of the day, with support from Maloni and Nino Peniamina for his backline play. Out at Centennial Park, the undefeated Div 2 team hosted 2nd placed Marist and an extremely tight game was fought out to the last second in a match where the lead changed on numerous occasions. Top table Clash A fitting top of the table clash, Marist led 24-26 with time up when a penalty was awarded to Taylors Wanderers 40 metres out and Charlie Munro stepped up immediately and pointed to the posts in a display of confidence that was certainly not misplaced. The ball sailed through and Wanderers kept their perfect record in
Zyon Holo scored a hat-trick of tries last weekend. Photo: Supplied. a game where both teams scored three tries and could only be separated in the end by the solitary point 27-26. As with the Div 1 team, coaches Steve Leef and Grant Blanchet had a spate of injuries that deci-
mated the team for this crucial game but a number of players stood up to the challenge to help the club. Outstanding distribution Sean Whittaker had his first run
Players maintain continuity In an exciting curtain-raiser, the Wanderers Blue Under-13 side hosted Awatere and both teams displayed a fine understanding of the principles of play and an ability to maintain continuity. Some excellent tries were scored, and some equally-courageous defensive efforts were put in by both sides. Awatere had a size advantage which required Wanderers to make more tackles, and in the end the teams were separated by a single extra try to the visitors, but not before James Strang had scored two tries for Wanderers in an exhibition of good straight running. Player of the day for Wanderers Blue was Taylor Hawley with special mentions made to Nathan Inch for his variations in play and Ryan Mirfin as the team’s Best Back. Next week will see all teams take a rest except for the Division one semi-final which will be at Trafalgar Park on Saturday at 3pm.
