Rabbit Island reserve should be extended Simon Bloomberg Richmond councillor Judene Edgar would like to see an extension of the recreation area on Rabbit Island to reduce the conflict between recreational users and commercial forestry operations on the island. The Tasman District Council is concerned that lives are being put at risk after a series of incidents involving people entering active logging sites in its commercial forests in the last year. Council has commissioned a review of its health and safety policy in all of its forests to manage these risks but Judene says she doesn’t want that to result in “limiting recreational uses” on Rabbit Island. “I would like to see more of Rabbit Island preserved for recreational use - that’s why the community loves it,” Judene says. “We don’t love it because of its ability to take solid waste and we don’t love it because we can grow pine trees there - we love it as a recreation place and it’s very near and dear to everyone’s heart

for that reason.” Although Judene says Rabbit Island is also a valuable commercial forest plantation and waste disposal site, she doesn’t want their operation to jeopardise recreational uses. It’s council policy to close recreational areas because of logging operations but Judene says this could be avoided by pulling back plantation boundaries from recreational walkways and cycling tracks like it has on Rough Island. “It’s surprising how many of the cycling and walking tracks go through the commercial forests so we need to find better ways of managing these resources. I know it will be a complicated process but we need to look at

Wakefield gets virtual makeover
Wakefield is getting a virtual make-over from Victoria University landscape architecture students who are redesigning the town’s walkways, parks, recreation areas and urban spaces as part of
their third year studies. Twenty-six students stayed with families in Wakefield last week when they conducted their initial analysis of the town for the study. They will complete the study over
the next three months before returning to Wakefield in November to present their findings in an exhibition in the Wakefield Hall.

“Quite often in the summer, or just get out there in the winter in the middle of the day. Just drive out there and walk around. I love the rawness, no commercialised stuff.”
“We don’t use it very often, but when our kids were younger we used it heaps, it’s a really good family facility.”
“I haven’t used Rabbit Island for a long time. Just haven’t found the time but I used to spend a lot of time at Rabbit Island, just relaxing.”
“I go out to Rabbit Island walking a lot and I enjoy the picnic areas - they are very good. But I do get worried about a forest fire out there because it would be a hard place to evacuate.”
Rabbit Island reserve Wakefield gets virtual should be extended makeover from students FROM PAGE 1 it because I don’t want to see some heavy-handed health and safety policy limit users, and this is where the government’s Health and Safety Reform Bill could take us”. Judene says recreational users on Rabbit Island also needed to play a role in improving public safety by avoiding restricted areas. She says the main health and safety concerns that have been raised to date mainly relate to a small number of people ignoring warning signs and entering areas closed for logging.
A number of popular cycling areas including Bird Rd, Cooper Road East and Barnicoat are presently closed due to logging and will reopen on September 25. Deputy mayor Tim King says it is critical for council to find a way for recreational users and forestry to co-exist on Rabbit Island. Council will not make any changes to either recreational uses or forestry operations without considering “the size of the impact” of changes, he says. “Council doesn’t want to sacrifice either of them - both are extraordinarily valuable,” Tim says.

Student Kristina Wang says there are a number of issues their group identified, including the lack of a town centre and poor connectivity between the town and surrounding parks and reserves and the Wai-iti River. “There is an obvious lack of a town centre - it doesn’t have anywhere for people to gather,” Kristina says. “The street lighting is also very poor which doesn’t encourage people to come out. “Wakefield has some very nice natural areas and parks, like Faulkner Bush and the river, but they lack connectivity to the town. The State Highway creates some of these connectivity issues so we’ll need to

He also noticed a lack of recreational areas, including a skatepark, for younger children. The students also had some suggestions for Wakefield
School principal Peter Verstappen during a visit to the school on Friday. Peter wanted to know “what we could do differently to make the school appear more welcoming” and student Yousr Ali suggested creating an entranceway that was more inviting. “What about an archway with some of the children’s art on display on the fence,” Yousr says. “You also need to link the inside of the school to the outside so you could do this by using the same sort of paving or tiles flowing through into the school.” The results of the project will be on display at the Wakefield Village Hall on November 5 to 8.

Construction of the $1.095million development has been tendered to Gibbons Construction and will start on August 1 and be completed in October. “The people signed in the last two weeks and will be operating a cafe and ice-cream parlour business,” corporate services manager Mike Drummond says. “They are locally owned and already run another similar business.”

Council commercial manager Gene Cooper says five of the seven spaces have already been leased and he expects the remaining two leases to be signed before the end of the month. “There’s been a lot of interest from businesses,” Gene says. “I took three calls in one day and we have a waiting list of six businesses wanting to go in there.” Mike says council also intends “bringing forward” plans to increase the number of car parks around Shed 4. He concedes a lack of car parks is a concern for Mapua Wharf businesses and council will be creating “more car parking spaces than the building requires” to help alleviate that problem.

Mapua’s popular ice-cream parlour and cafe, Hamish’s, closed on Sunday after operating successfully for nine years but it shouldn’t be too long before another one opens on the Mapua Wharf. Hamish’s closed after the lease on their building expired and owner Adele Calteaux decided not to relocate to a new commercial building to be constructed on the site of the former Mapua Aquarium. Adele says she is disappointed to be closing but has no other option because she can’t afford the $60,000 to $80,000 cost of relocating her business. $13M centre upgrade approved Kate Russell
An engineer’s report was presented to council on July 16, which recommended the demolition and rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets, strengthening work on the western edge of the new southern end, and $7 million worth of work to the main building. Pulling it down and building a new venue on the same site would cost $25-$30 million. Mayor Rachel Reese called the
Nelson City councillors were unanimous in their decision to press forward with the Trafalgar Centre upgrade, in a full council meeting last week. The $13 million upgrade to the earthquake-prone building was debated as being too expensive by members of the public during the meeting, but councillors have agreed that the project, despite its hefty price tag, is a “must do” for the city.
Power users get winter bill bonus Consumer-owned electricity distributor Network Tasman will be handing out $8.3million of sales discounts to its customers’ winter power bills, an increase of $200,000 on last year. The company’s 38,500 consumers will receive a discount at a rate of 2.2 cents on each unit of electricity used during the last year. An average residential consumer using 6,900kwh per annum can expect a discount against their August power bill of around $150. A consumer must have had an active, metered connection to Network Tasman’s electricity distribution system as at midnight July 17 to be eligible for the discount - the network covers the Nelson-Tasman region, excluding central Nelson. Network Tasman chief executive Wayne Mackey says the total discount is slightly higher than last year. They are currently arranging for electricity retailers to credit the discounts onto consumers’ power bills from late July through to the end of August - the discount will be clearly identified as a separate item on consumers’ power accounts. “Eligible consumers will receive a discount irrespective of which electricity retailer they choose,” Wayne says. ”Switching retailers does not alter this entitlement because the discount comes from Network Tasman and not the retailer.” Network Tasman has credited more than $130million of discounts back into the region since the scheme’s inception in 1994.

the council is getting the best possible price for a “complex” rebuild. Councillor Mike Ward stated that much of cost will be returned to the city, especially if there are a couple of really good events. The next steps are to complete the pricing and detailed design for the southern extension and strengthening of the main building, and develop options for the scope and design of the rebuild. Trust wants to peek inside blokes’ sheds
Nelson bands in finals
Nelson College for Girls band Tetra and Garin College group Future Class are among the 30 entrants still in contention for the Smokefreerockquest finals to be held in Auckland in September. The finalists will be further narrowed down by a panel of judges from the music industry, and on July 31 there will be an announcement of the final six bands and three solo-duos to play-off in Auckland on September 11. The 21 acts not in the final selection now become contenders for the People’s Choice, with the winner competing in the final.
Jessie Johnston While some sheds may be the final resting place for borer-ridden wood and rusting metal, there are others that are truly spectacular in their contents. Luckily it’s the latter sheds that will be opened up to the public as part of a fundraiser for the Life Education Trust. The Blokes in Sheds Tour has been running for a few years now and gives people the opportunity to peer into some classic kiwi sheds. While half of the most popular sheds from last year’s event will be returning for this year’s tour, organisers are still on the lookout for some new gems to showcase. “It’s about people being passionate about something. In the past we’ve had a guy with his model railway that he’s built in his garage, we’ve had people with collections and Nelson memorabilia, but we’ve also had people with sheds of motorcycles, cars and restorations,” says Life Education Trust chairperson, Michelle Fitzgerald. “We’ve had a really mixed bag and I guess it’s just people who have a passion, or have a collection or something that other people might find interesting.” Already organisers have secured Higgins Park, which features a range of groups including the steam and transport museums. The tour will also feature a brewery, distillery and much more that people

Life Education Trust is a charitable organisation that provides children with life skills from a mobile classroom.
The organization is invited into primary and intermediate schools to educate students on a number of topics, from food and nutrition to social relationships and bullying. The tour will be held on September 13, from 10am until 4pm. Elaine Beattie with Silver, an Exotic Shorthair, at the Nelson Cat Show at Hope Hall last Sunday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Top cats put on show Nelson Cat Club could have staged a production of Cats last weekend with a colourful mix of feline personalities and fur coats at the Nelson Cat Show. There were 119 cats entered in the show at Hope Hall, which was a championship competition run to the New Zealand Cat Fancier standards. The event featured owners and their cats from all around the country, as far north as Whangarei and as far south as Alexandra. While the public flocked to admire cats of all kinds, owners and breeders were more interested in what the five judges thought of their prized felines. Elaine Beattie says her Exotic Shorthair, Silver, had won a third in the longhair neuter spay kitten section and a first in the longhair neuter spay section, judges commenting that Silver had wow factor, was
nicely marked and well sized. “It’s a fun thing to do. I show dogs, so this is the first time for a cat,” says Elaine. “I think she’s a pretty cool cat, she sleeps on the floor with all the dogs.” Registered cats are judged to a set standard for their breed, while domestics and companions, (pedigrees with a fault), are judged on their personality and temperament, as well as their health condition and how they are looked after. The show had judges from America, France, Australia and New Zealand. In the end, the Supreme Registered Cat was a Sphinx from Fielding, Gd. Db. Gr. Pr. Lucky I’m Cruzingalong Bare, while the Supreme Domestic winner was Florence, a brown tortie tabby bicolour shorthair, from Christchurch.

UnderCover quilters wrap up charity project
QUILTERS DONATE TO CHARITY: Victim Support service coordinator Donna Smith, front left, receives some quilts from the UnderCover Girls quilting group last week. The group made and then donated 30 quilts to Victim Support which says they will be used to give victims of crime warmth and comfort. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Simon Bloomberg A Nelson quilting group, the UnderCover Girls, has made a heart, and body, warming gesture, donating 30 quilts to Victim Support. The group started about 30 years ago when founding member Joyce Jones got together with some of the students she had taught quilting at Waimea College's community education classes. Joyce says the UnderCover Girls have donated quilts to charity in the past and this year decided to help out Victim Support, last Wednesday handing over the final instalment of 30 quilts. "We initially approached the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade to see if they needed some quilts to keep people warm," Joyce says. "But they told us to approach Victim Support, so we got hold of them and they said they would be ideal for their volunteers." Victim Support service coordinator for Tasman, Donna Smith, says they have already left three quilts at the Nelson Police Station "to give victims of crime warmth and comfort." The remaining 27 will be issued to their 31 volunteers who will use them to keep victims warm immediately following traumatic events such as house fires and car crashes. "It's a really nice gesture," Donna says. "We often come across victims who need comforting and warmth, so these quilts are perfect." Although Joyce says the quilts are "nothing fancy," Donna disagrees. "I've seen them all and they are beautiful. These ladies have done a wonderful job." Joyce says the quilts were made by the group's 20 members, who come from Richmond, Nelson, Golden Bay and Murchison, using fabric donated by the family of founding member Jill Raine. The Mini Symposium Committee also donated some funds to help purchase fabric for the quilts.

Trafalgar Centre: If you read the newspaper report months ago, the Trafalgar Centre was to open February 2016. Maybe you were looking forward to seeing some of the great shows travelling throughout New Zealand - well, dream on, it's not a happening thing. The cost for repairs is now estimated at $13 million (and let's hope Nelson people get allocated the work). The heart of Nelson city has almost stopped beating, all we see is empty shops all over our town. Rates and water increases and soon we'll by paying for the air that we breath (as Japan does). We don't' need blue stripes on our footpaths or any more walkways. We need our city to come alive, we need an entertainment centre, so lets get things sorted and soon. M.L. Clinton.

Spending should be on core services: Cr. Pete Rainey’s wish to have the Nelson council completely take over the ownership of the Theatre Royal and the Suter, plus build a new performing arts centre, should set off alarm bells for ratepayers. The council has loaded the ratepay-

ers with huge amounts of non-core liabilities, at the expense of basic services which receive insufficient attention. Just one example is the commitment to the Brook Sanctuary, which has the potential for very significant repair costs for slips and also for storm damage to the fence. What the better-off people in Nelson choose to overlook is that Nelson is a low-wage town, with many people really struggling to make ends meet and care for their children. Most of our councillors are in a privileged position and overlook this situation. The council already generously funds the arts. To go any further at the expense of basic services and infrastructure would be a disservice to the community. Dan McGuire. Green light for Trafalgar Centre work: Awesome. A good decision. Heather Waters. Get on with it. Jim Mitchell. Good one. Saw the Russian Ballet advertising on TV, only Nelson missing on the venues, even Blenheim was on the list.

Bring it on. Brenda Kenny. $6M boost for Nelson's nature: Great stuff. Lets hope a lot of that will be spent on restoring the Old Codgers Flora which will bring back all the birds that have fled the area. Sallie Rose. The wildbird life out Upper Moutere is fantastic, tui, bellbird, yellowheads, quail, kingfisher, many different finches, wood pigeons, wax eyes, fantails, and love the air bombs from the plovers chasing the hawks. Sarah Allsopp. Designer a WOW finalist after three attempts: Good for her, they say persistence pays off - well done! June Kirk.
Whakatu Dr speeds 'unsurvivable', say police: What a headline. Media hype again. So how many deaths have there been? None that I'm aware of, so in spite of the recorded speeds no one has died because of the speed. So what's the problem? Porschephille (via nelsonlive.co.nz).

Origin flights get a step closer: Wonderful as long as you have direct flights from Nelson to New Plymouth! Philippa Foes-Lamb. Hope it goes better second time round. Daniel Rowse. Yay, we need the competition! Lisa Foote. Go Origin. Stay away from Nelson Jetstar, I say! David Tuson. Murray Teece funeral: Amazing send-off for this man that Nelson Speedway and community will miss. Just keep an eye on those rain forecasts for meeting nights, Murray, RIP. Anne Marshall-Green. Network Tasman discount: Love it how it comes off the bill in winter, and as a cheque before Xmas. Sophie Hodge. Highly Recommended Stressless
Summit
“Everyone in our office looks forward to their fortnightly Stressless massage. It is 20 minutes of heaven! Tension and stress just melt away and we return to our desk re-energised. We can’t recommend the Stressless team highly enough.” Pitt & Moore Lawyers
What a successful year it has been for Karen Green. In 2014 she took out the Rookie of the Year Award at the annual Summit Awards and in doing so gained admission to the Summit Champions Club - an award recognising Summit’s top performers. This year she has been recognised for the highly coveted Excellence in Real Estate Award – a huge milestone for someone who has been in Real Estate just under two years. Karen was genuinely thrilled to receive the Excellence in Real Estate Award. “To receive this before the end of my second year is so flattering and quite honestly a dream come true. I am absolutely rapt.”
“We at Duncan Cotterill certainly recommend 20 minutes of work place massage. It takes us out of our work space and we return feeling totally relaxed and ready for whatever the rest of the day may bring.” Duncan Cotterill Lawyers “In 2009 I was looking for a meaningful way to recognise and show appreciation for the hard work our local South Island team undertake. To say that a 20 minute on-site massage was a ‘hit’ – just understates the impact on our working life. Every individual has the opportunity to have a session tailored to their specific needs each month. The therapists are now an integral part of our family and the monthly visit to our office reinforces to our crew that we are all valuable and cared for.” Ian, Provincial Manager
“Karen Green was wonderful to work with, we felt respected and listened to at all times. Her friendly outgoing personality made it all very personable and it was like dealing with a trustworthy friend. We can’t recommend Karen highly enough. Karen is an absolute gem and a quality asset for Summit Real Estate. If we were to ever sell again she would be our 1st choice real estate agent.” Lynette & Peter

Highly Recommended CT Builders
Pets Haven
“As a rule we only recommend people that we believe to be the best and we highly recommend CT Builders. Chris and his team went above and beyond on our renovation. We found them to be extremely efficient, thorough, reliable and focused. Chris’s excellent communication put us at ease, discussing all our options and allowing us to make educated decisions. To execute a successful project these qualities are essential. We are happy with their work and highly recommend them.” L and J Connolly
“Our dog Milly regularly holidays at Pets Haven, she loves going there, jumps out of the car and rushes in without a backward glance! When we collect her, I am always impressed that Adina, Allen and their team take the time to tell me something about Milly and her visit. They obviously spend time with each dog and get to know their personalities. They are always busy and nothing is ever a problem - a last minute change of plans accommodated, but I wouldn’t try that at Christmas! We always book early!” Jocelyn Riley
“Dear Chris. We wanted to express our delight with the work that you have just completed for us. We already had experience of your carpentry skills, in fact that was a reason to choose you. What was so good was your time in discussing our needs including all the different materials for all the other work that you did.Your turning up on time, working hard and cleaning up afterward, even knowing that we could leave you a key and absolutely trust you was invaluable. Not to go unnoticed was the fact that if you got anything cheaper than expected, you passed the saving on to us! We will recommend you Chris and say a big “Thank You” for a job well done.” Roger and Jennifer
“Pets Haven is my home away from home. Allen and Adina take great care of me when Mum and Dad are away working. I’m always excited to see them and all my doggy friends again” Zac Wiles (Jack Russell)

Richmond has continued to be the vibrant hub of the Tasman District, has seen some growth over the last year, and now has a bigger hub of stores and businesses to offer the region. Richmond Unlimited has continued to build its profile and represent the business district in the best way possible. Their support and promotion of local businesses continues to result in many people in the region seeing Richmond as a first choice for shopping and doing business. With free parking all year, free WiFi, a shopping mall and main street retailers, Richmond offers all the options required. There are a number of major projects coming up in the near future and it has

Richmond Unlimited were encouraged by over 80 business owners and town centre property owners attending a recent invitation meeting held to discuss the future of Richmond and how to minimise the inevitable disruption that changes can create. With this in mind, Richmond Unlimited conducted an online survey of car parking in Richmond and will be putting out another survey for businesses to fill out before the end of the year. Proud to work with Mortimer Upholstery & Marine Covers
Mortimers Upholstery and Marine Covers and Nelson Shade Solutions are excited about their new workshop, which features a colossal work table for projects of any size.
As well as Caleb and Ian, the team includes Gareth Sim, apprentice Mitch Hewson, and Anne Bradnam, who all bring different skills to the businesses. Ian has earned a reputation for excellent classic car interiors, while Mitch is good with repairs, truck seats and motorbike seats. Gareth is an expert with shade sails and has a valuable background in making sails for competitive yacht racing. In fact, he’s spent the last two campaigns with Oracle. Anne Bradnam is their part-time sewer, repairer and master of the many random tasks that come through their door, and Caleb fills the gaps, although his strength is in boat
canopies and covers. “We’ve been to jobs where our competitors have said “No, we can’t do the job” but we’ve got the attitude that any job is possible, you’ve just got to come up with a good solution, and to do that you have to think outside of the square,” says Caleb. Another plus to their new premises is a showroom and reception area, manned by Elena Hill and Lynda Mortimer. The showroom features great samples, plus a television screen which will allow customers to see for themselves the standard to which both businesses complete projects. The team are also big supporters of the wider community and this
August they will be teaming up with The Hits to see where the Nelson public think a shade solution is needed. Nominations can be made between Monday, July 27, and Friday, August 7, with voting open to the public on Monday, August 10. You can vote by visiting either mortimerautoupholstery.co.nz or nelsonshadesolutions.co.nz and following the links. The winner of the shade sail will be announced on Friday, August 14. For all your shade, upholstery and cover solutions, come and see the team at Mortimer Upholstery and Marine Covers and Nelson Shade Solutions at 44 Beach Rd, Richmond.

Wanderers Sports Club End season trophy presentation – Rugby, Cricket, Netball, League. To be held on Saturday 1 August at 7.30pm in the Wanderers Clubrooms, Brightwater. Entry is free, music and supper provided and the bar will be open. No BYO. Rugby - Congratulations to all Division One players, coaches and team management for winning both the Tasman Trophy and the Nelson Bays Sub Union competitions for 2015. Congratulations also to Division 2 for winning the first round and also a great effort on finals day. League - The Wanderers Wolves were unsuccessful in their semifinal match on Saturday against the Tahunanui Tigers, therefore
knocking them out of the TRL 2015 season just one game short of the Grand Final. It is with pride that we saw how far the team came this year both on and off the field and this honestly would not have been possible without all the support from sponsors and supporters. This season the team become the minor premiers, finishing on top of the regular season ladder for the first time ever, after four years in the TRL competition - sending a firm message that rugby league is well and truly alive out at Wanderers, and we are most certainly a club to watch out for!
The importance of community No person is an island, yet that is often how our culture portrays life; it’s all about me - my needs, my interests, my wants, and my ambitions. This, when taken to extremes leads to lonely people and a weak community. It has been a delight to see a new initiative develop in the Brightwater Community over the last month with the development of a community Facebook page. A page designed to bring the community together, help meet new people, and hear about what’s happening in Brightwater. A quick scan of the last three weeks of this page has seen a range of things posted, from lost dogs, found USB Memory Sticks, sources of fresh vegetables, updated road work plans and information on the Brightwater Community Association discussions. I applaud the
person who has developed this page because of the potential it creates to enrich and help us to develop the richness that community can bring. Community is a buzzword, which is easier said than done. And often it’s more talked about than it is practiced. For community to develop and happen, some of the things that are needed are: Intentionality – it takes work by the people involved. Diversity – for community to be rich it can’t just be with people we feel comfortable with, who completely understand us and believe the same things. Openness – creating space where people can come as they are, and they’ll find others as they are. Though it is hard work it is well worth it because it helps us to grow and find new life. Jesus summed up how to create good community by saying “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”( John 15:12-13). That is why the Brightwater Community Anglican Church Vision is “To build a mature community of God in and through the church community and the community of the Waimea plains.”

Broadgreen House to reopen
Broadgreen House will reopen this weekend after undergoing major maintenance work. The house has been closed since the beginning of April in order to put in place a permanent solution to the flood-damaged cellar. In the 2011 flooding, the cellar was badly damaged as the water washed
away the clay walls. Remedial strengthening was started immediately after to keep the house open but of course the work wasn’t up to earthquake standards. Broadgreen House will reopen this Saturday, August 1, visitors are welcome to view the house from 11am until 3pm.

Local charities get cash from promotion The staff at Z Energy’s Richmond station did some Good in the Hood again this year when they handed out $4000 in donations to four of the district’s most deserving community groups. Every Z Energy station in the country ran the annual Good in the Hood programme in May when their customers voted for one of four community groups to receive a share of $4000. Barnardos, Nelson Ark, Pinnacle House and Camp Quality were the community groups chosen by Z Energy in Richmond and those groups went to the Gladstone Rd station to receive their donations. Pinnacle House, which is based on Lower Queen St and looks after young adults with special needs, received 1820 votes which equated to $775 and director Linda Gill says the donation was very timely. “We are trying to raise funds for heat pumps for the rooms so this will go towards that,” Linda says. “This is the second year we’ve been part of Good in the Hood so we are really grateful to Z Energy.” Linda says the staff at Z Energy in Richmond also goes down to Pinnacle House and helps out with some of their fundraising activities.
Z Energy Richmond’s Jigisha Ghandi, right, with Pinnacle House’s manager Carol Burson, left, and director Linda Gill, second right, and students Lisa Driver and Amir Zadeh at the Good in the Hood presentation. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Barnardos Nelson’s Jolene Salmond says they will use the $1353 they received for getting 3176 votes to extend their Active Dads programme to include older children. Camp Quality’s Jon Hunter says they will use their $899 donation to help pay for a young person from the Nelson-Tasman region to get to their annual camp in Christchurch. “That will be enough to fund about three-quarters of the cost of getting one camper to the camp.” Jon says. “We usually take six to nine kids from our region to the camp so we are very happy to receive this donation.”
The Nelson Ark will be using their donation of $973 for running their programme that rescues unwanted and abused dogs and partners them with young people in-need for training. Z Energy Stoke donated $2519 to the Nelson Marlborough Helicopter, $683 to Child Flight, $486 to the Life Education and $312 to Beating Time. The Halifax St station gave $1806 to the Child Cancer Foundation, $881 to St John Nelson, $789 to Victim Support and $524 to the Blind Foundation. Good in the Hood has donated more than $1million nationally.

Just a thought... Someone recently asked how can anyone have hope for the future in light of the increasing violence and moral breakdown, global terrorism and the growing Middle East crises? How can anyone believe in a better tomorrow? Hope is an irrational idea when our world is falling apart, but there is one sure way to discover a hope that says tomorrow can be better than today. There is one who can promise a future and a hope even when we have messed up and have made bad choices. Hope is defined as a confident expectation of a bright future. Did you know that the word hope occurs over 150 times in the bible?
News
It is the Book of Hope. God is the God of hope because He is the God of the past, the present and the future. Speaking of Jesus it says ‘His name is the HOPE of the world... in his name the nations will Ross Ferguson put their hope.’ Richmond The prophet Jeremiah Community says ‘For I know the Church plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.’ Hope is the only antidote to the two of the most crippling fears, fear of the future and the fear of death.

Former UN Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskold, wrote that any philosophy which cannot make sense of death cannot make sense of life either, and no one’s living will be right until the truths about death are anchored in his or her heart. Hope is that anchor. For centuries the anchor has been a symbol of hope so that whenever we face a storm or a crisis, without it we are gripped by fear and hopelessness. The writer to the book of Hebrews states that ‘we can have great confidence as we hold on to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.’ I once had the experience of being adrift at sea in a storm and with an anchor that failed to hold. After drifting helplessly for hours
Kevin gets his scooter back
It was bad luck that saw Kevin Jourdain’s scooter-style kick bike stolen a few months ago and a stroke of incredibly good luck which has now reunited him with his favourite form of transport. Kevin’s scooter had been sitting just outside his home in Waimea Village when it was taken, and to help Kevin out in his hour of need, Village Cycles owner Jim Matthews gave him a brand new scooter to get around on. Then a few weeks ago, out of the blue, his scooter was returned to him in perfect working order. The discoverer said they saw the bike lying in a ditch behind McDonalds and contacted the Richmond Mall after noticing it regularly parked outside there previously – when Kevin had used it to deliver Waimea Weekly papers. The mall passed on the person’s details to Kevin who was excited to finally get his set of wheels back. Kevin is extremely grateful to Village Cycles for their generosity and says he now has one spare scooter “just in case.”

Waimea College couldn’t stop a rampant Nelson College in their UC Championships secondary schools rugby game at Waimea College on Saturday, losing 59-5. And they did just that scoring the bonus point try in the 24th minute and lead 31-0 at halftime before completing a nine-try demolition of Waimea Col-

Nelson netballers win rep tournament
Nelson under 15 player Bailee Tava takes a pass during her side’s game against West Coast at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Nelson under-17, under-15, under-13 and their development teams played against their counterparts from Motueka, Marlborough, Buller, West Coast and Mid Canterbury at the Nelson age-group netball tournament on Sunday. Teams played three games each at the tournament, that was moved indoors to Saxton Stadium at the eleventh hour after heavy rain was forecast for the Nelson region. The Richmond Mall Nelson under-13 team made a good start to the tournament, beating West Coast 41-15. Nelson dominated all facets of play and was only outclassed in the shooting stats – Nelson returning a combined average of 68 per cent compared to West Coast’s 94 per cent. West Coast managed to get turnover ball but could not capitalise on it, as time and time again Nelson would repay the favour and regain possession. Georgia McBeth was lethal through the midcourt, she drove to the space and with great timing she pulled in numerous intercepts. Sophie Wemyss was industrious too, in the mid court where she linked nicely. Maddi Marshall and Lareiahna de Leon-McGrath’s introduction to the shooting circle for the middle two quarters was most productive. Lareiahna had played the first period at wing defence and was a revelation at goal attack where she worked hard off the line and penetrated the top of the circle well.

Maddi was successful with her four attempts in the second quarter but was more available for the off-load and presented well for the feed to increase her attempts to seven from nine. Coach Lynette Butler would have to be happy with the amount of turnover ball her charges got and the conversion rate of 64 per cent. She was able to make several positional changes at each break, with all players receiving good amounts of court time. Nelson defeated Motueka 32–29 for the Tasman Challenge Trophy but lost their final game to Marlborough 26-18. Richmond Mall Nelson under-13’s next outing will be at Ashburton this weekend. In other games, Richmond Mall under-13 Development team beat Buller 27-23, Motueka 31-19 and Marlborough B 35-17, Nelson under-15 beat Buller 30-28, Mid Canterbury 45-11 and Marlborough 31-14, Nelson under-15 Development beat Marlborough 35-20, Motueka 37-23 and Buller 53-15, Russell’s Curtains Nelson under-17 beat West Coast 35-26, Buller 5129 and lost to Marlborough 38-30, Russell’s Curtains Nelson under-17 Development beat West Coast 3023, Motueka 43-18 and lost to Marlborough 38-34.

and so far I'm very impressed. You are very, very spoiled here." Chris says the trust decided to invite Jason to Nelson because it would benefit the whole region. A gold star rating from IMBA would "give us a real international presence as an attractive mountainbike destination." "They have world-wide exposure with everything they promote," Chris says. "We all know how good the riding is around here but this will give us an international presence." Chris says the trust paid for Jason's visit and although "it's quite an investment, it will give us regional benefits." Jason says he rated the Hackett highly for scenery and "for pucker-factor I enjoyed Lollipop". The Coppermine was also a favourite with "a nice climb and amazing descent, that starts with rough, baby-head boulder and gets smoother and faster as you go down".
