Aussies purchase Nelson Forests Last week, Australian company OneFortyOne (OFO) received confirmation that the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) has approved its purchase of Nelson Forests. The completion date for the purchase will be Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Nelson Forests, currently owned
by investment funds and advised by Global Forest Partners LP, is a vertically-integrated plantation and sawmill business in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. “We are very pleased that approval has been granted by OIO. The decision is important, providing certainty for the Nelson Forests’
team, customers, the region and the broader NZ forest industry. We look forward to being a strong contributor to the region,” said OFO’s chief executive officer, Linda Sewell. Nelson Forests is a recognised leader in forest management and has been broadly used as the
benchmark for performance in the New Zealand industry. “The acquisition fits nicely with the balance of OFO’s assets in the Green Triangle”, says Linda. Linda will be in Nelson to mark the completion date on September 4, and to welcome the Nelson Forests’ team to the OFO fam-
ily. In just five years, OFO has become an established industry player within Australia with a strong track record of industry and community partnerships. Campbell Global, Gresham Partners and MinterEllisonRuddWatts were advisory partners to OFO on the transaction. Jane’s Tactix netball team was one of eight to compete in the Super Club international competition at Trafalgar Centre. “It’s been awesome here. The sun’s come out and there are plenty of happy kids,” said Jane. The fun event included netball shootouts, blow up obstacle course, photo booth and face painting. Photo: Emily Beaumont.

No charges following ATV death Jonty Dine A Uruguayan woman who caused the death of her friend in an ATV accident has been discharged without conviction. The 29-year-old appeared in Nelson District Court, last Wednesday afternoon, facing charges of careless operation of a motor vehicle causing death. However, Judge David Ruth says the “tragic” accident was an appropriate case for discharge without conviction. Judge Ruth acknowledged Antaclara Garzon made an error which was on the lower end of the carelessness scale. He accepted the trauma Garzon has and will continue to go through as she
tries to go on with her life. On June 28, Garzon and her friend, a 29-year-old French female, set off on the farm they were staying on at Eighty-Eight Valley Rd near Wakefield. The two women were trying to find a river to meditate. When coming across a steep incline, Garzon decided to reverse when the back wheels rolled off the edge of the track. The momentum saw the ATV roll 13 metres to land seven metres below the farm track, throwing the driver and crushing the passenger in the process. The prosecution stated that Garzon was given proper safety instructions to operate the Yamaha
Wolverine ATV which included wearing safety belts at all times and driving on flat tracks only. Defence lawyer Yvanca Clarisse argued that a conviction would have severe consequences on her client’s life, including possible deportation. The woman was ordered to pay $4000 reparation to the victim’s family to cover the cost of recovery and emotional distress. Impact statements from the victim’s family were presented to Judge Ruth, including the victim’s little sister who has incurred serious psychological issues as a result of the incident. Garzon was visibly shaken and upset as Judge Ruth addressed her.

$10,000 helps secure safe trail for Tasman cyclists The New Zealand Walking Access Commission has made a $10,000 grant to the Nelson Cycle Trails Trust towards the cost of securing access on the Belgrove to Spooners Tunnel section of the Great Taste Trail. Josh Aldridge from the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trail Trust says the Commission helped pay for legal and surveying costs of registering easements on
private land, to make sure access is enduring. The Trust is also building a trail from the western end of Spooners Tunnel to Kohatu, which Josh hopes will be open by Christmas. This is part of a long-term vision of completing the Great Taste Trail loop by connecting Kohatu to Motueka and Riwaka. Spooners Tunnel is a highlight of the Great Taste cycle trail,

being the Southern Hemisphere’s longest tunnel used only by cyclists and walkers. The Grade 2 trail is seven kilometres long and follows a gently inclining, unsealed forestry road. Josh says the new trail is a massive safety improvement for cyclists and walkers and improves their experience. “It’s made a real difference,” he says.

Network Tasman achieve a surplus Electricity lines company Network Tasman Limited achieved an operating surplus after tax of $10.5 million for the year ended 31 March 2018. This year’s financial result is a consequence of strong contributions from all of the company’s businesses, including the core electricity and fibre communications networks and investments
in advanced meters and Nelson Electricity Limited. Solid growth continued in Network Tasman’s electricity distribution area, with consumer connections increasing by 562 for the year (1.4%), while total electricity distributed through the system increased by 1.4% to 747 GWh. Network Tasman chairman, John McCliskie, says, “our network is
well-placed to support changes in electricity usage, the increased demand for electricity supply to the region and expected changes in new technologies”. The company’s current Asset Management Plan forecasts expenditure of $117 million over the next ten years. In the company’s Annual Report released on Friday, July 27, John
states, “we are now seeing new technologies becoming mainstream and economic viability closer to reality. The company is spending a considerable amount of time identifying, researching and preparing for the impact and opportunities of these new technologies”. John says, “Network Tasman is well positioned to respond to the
challenges ahead. The strong balance sheet, robust cash flows and a balanced portfolio of businesses position us well for the future”. John noted that “Network Tasman now has 40,000 customers on our network. The region we serve continues to grow and Network Tasman is well placed to continue to meet demand into the future”. Water treatment notice for pet owners Tasman District Council has advised that a change to the water treatment will take place from August 30 to September 6. Due to a major planned power outage in the Lower Queen Street area over this period, the Richmond water supply will be a different blend of water to usual for at least 6 hours each day. This covers the properties from the Wakatu Industrial Estate and Champion Road in the north of Richmond to Bateup Road in the south. During this time, the water will be higher in nitrate (about 50mg/l). A sudden change in nitrate level in aquarium water can cause fish to become distressed or die. It’s recommended to either treat the water beforehand if you need to top up or change the tank water, or put aside some water beforehand for this purpose. The normal level in the water supply is about 22mg/l as nitrate. The increased nitrate level on these days is not harmful to humans.
Huge pollen clouds have been seen drifting across the bay recently and MetService are warning hay fever sufferers to be prepared. Pollen is shed from flowering plants as microscopic grains 15 to 50 micrometres across. Only when they are shed in large numbers are they visible as dust or as a cloud in the air. Spring has nearly sprung and as winds strengthen and temperatures warm, the pollen season has begun. Most of the pollen in August is from pine and wattle and continues into August/September with deciduous trees like oaks, elm, birches and other deciduous trees says Dr David Fountain, Pollen Forecaster to MetService NZ.

200 new state houses for Dam decision imminent A decision on the future of the Waimea Top of the South by 2022 As a result of the Governments comprehensive Public Housing Plan, released on August 24 by Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford, up to 200 more families in West Coast and Tasman will have new homes built over the next four years. “The Government’s fully-funded Public Housing Plan will build 6,400 new homes for families in need,” says Phil. Phil says, “the single most important thing the Government can do to solve the housing crisis is to build more affordable homes, and the best way to tackle homelessness is to build more public housing.”
Dam was being made on Tuesday, August 28. At the time of going to press the decision was unavailable as deliberations were continuing throughout the day. The Tasman District Council, together with its joint venture partners Waimea Irrigators Ltd and Crown Irrigation Investments Ltd, has been working on options for closing a funding gap of $26 million for the Waimea Community Dam. The dam remains the council’s preferred option for solving the acute summer water shortages and mayor Richard Kempthorne says the rationale for the dam remained compelling, even at the higher price.

Police issue phone scam warning Police are warning people to be wary of scammers purporting to be from Spark and/ or OFCANZ (Organised and Financial Crime Agency) who are seeking access to victim’s computers and bank accounts. This is a variation on previous scams seen by Police, where the scammers claim to be from a widely recognised organisation in order to gain the victim’s trust, says Detective Sergeant Rapira-Davies of NZ Police Cybercrime Unit. Police’s message on scams like this is simple – do not engage with anyone on the phone if you think you are being scammed – hang up immediately and report the incident. Government agencies will never ask for your information over the phone without stringent verification procedures, and they will never ask for your PIN number or seek to access your computer or bank accounts remotely.

Beekeepers win gold at national awards Amy Russ For Scott Williamson and Jezebel Cleveland it was the culmination of a lifetime of work, to win a national award at the National Apiculture Conference in Blenheim, in July. Bringing home a gold medal in the ‘Best products of the Hive’ section, for their pollen product, was confirmation of their fantastic product. “We are absolutely chuffed,” says Scott, “we collect our own pollen and work with the best in Nelson and the West Coast. To have international judges says it was the best product they have ever seen was thrilling!” Scott has been beekeeping for 25 years and is the former president of the Nelson Beekeeping Club. Jezebel has ‘bees in her blood’ as her family have been in the bee business since 1975. Since her father’s passing, she wanted to carry on with what he began. “Dad was one of the early people doing pollen back before manuka honey became popular,” says Jezebel, “we don’t have a lot of manuka honey around in Nelson and I wanted to carry on in my father’s footsteps. People are starting to discover the benefits of pollen again, and it’s exciting.” “I believe New Zealand pro-
duces the best pollen in the world. We have a wonderful environment, we don’t use antibiotics to treat diseases and a lot of the pollen on the worldwide market has been contaminated with herbicides and pesticides. With our New Zealand beekeeping policies, we have a reputation for a clean environment.” With their meticulous procedures and hive monitoring, Scott and Jezebel keep a very close eye on the health of their bees. “We make sure to only take the surplus from the hives, you have to leave enough honey and pollen for the bees to be healthy.” They then process and package it for selling. “It’s raw, it’s pure and people can eat it by the teaspoon or mix it with yoghurt or cereal, or make chocolate with it.” Jezebel says pollen contains almost all of the nutrients needed to sustain life with over 250 known nutritional ingredients and thousands of beneficial enzymes, co-factors and hormones, “a teaspoon a day, contains everything you need to be healthy. It contains absolutely every vitamin and mineral you need, except for Vitamin E.” For more information go to their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/pollennationnz

helloworld gears up for busy season Right now Tim and his team at helloworld Richmond are gearing up for another busy season with ‘early bird’ airfares to Europe and the northern hemisphere not too far away, not to mention next season’s cruise sales. Having employed an additional travel consultant, Amanda Cuff who previously managed the CruiseAbout travel agency in Nelson, the team can boast even more expertise in selling cruises. Tim says, “we’re especially chuffed to have reached new milestones. Over the past year, we sold over $1 million worth of cruises for the first time” - Tim reckons this reflects kiwis’ rapidly growing love affair with cruising. But that’s not all, in another first for the team they also racked up over $1 million in sales with Air New Zealand. At the recent helloworld annual Gala Award ceremony in Wellington, the Richmond team walked away with no less than five awards. Tim, Vicky and Rhonda all received awards recognising their individual sales achievements and scooped the Top Shop award for

Amanda says, “anyone who hasn’t cruised before, but is curi-

Mark will cover each of the cruise lines; you’ll leave knowing why Royal Caribbean is perfect for families, Celebrity is a foodies’ dream and Azamara is perfect for those who want a more ‘close up’ destination experience. ‘Helping Families’ with a very real need Amy Russ Kristy Rowe saw a real need in the area, for children and families who feel too afraid to ask for help. The idea stemmed from a conversation with a close friend, who provides foster care through Oranga Tamariki (Child, Youth and Families), when a child was dropped off wearing clothes too small for them. “I’ve always enjoyed helping people out,” says Kristy, “and after speaking with my friend I realised there was a certain stigma attached to asking for help. The big reason I started the charity is because I wanted to take that stigma away, take the judgement away.” Kristy started a Facebook page called ‘Helping Families’ and says things have steadily snowballed from there. “The aim is to help people who need support, whatever their circumstances may be, and connect them
container units. Any money coming in, that is what it is going towards at the moment.” Kristy’s vision is to expand into an area where people can go to for support, “somewhere people can come to for help, where we can provide information and even food parcels.” Working with agencies like Oranga Tamariki, WINZ, Barnados and Plunket is something
Kristy would love to do. “if anyone would like to get in contact with me, for more information, they can go to our ‘Helping Families’ Facebook page, we love to help.” Kristy is currently putting together a Go Fund Me page for donations. garments for children and adults, clean bedding and blankets, clothing, shoes and plastic storage bins. I would love any business support as well!” Kristy says that they have a shipping container full of items ready to go, and will need more storage space in the very near future.
The trust has been donated space at the Headingly Centre to put two 40ft storage containers and Kristy is looking for sponsorship, “the opportunity for a business to advertise their support is there.” “We also need sliding doors, signage and racking for the

Instrumental in country’s first record Emily Beaumont He’s been credited with contributing toward New Zealand music’s ‘big bang’ moment, but Richmond’s Jim Carter says he was “lucky”. On his lap steel guitar in 1948, Jim played the first notes on ‘Blue Smoke’ written by Ruru Karaitiana and sung by Pixie Williams. The recording became the debut release for Tanza, New Zealand’s first indie label, and was a huge local hit, selling more than 50,000 copies on 78rpm disc. “It was the first record made wholly in New Zealand, it was a very special record,” says Jim. The 99-year-old has outlived the others involved in the recording, one of the downfalls to longevity, he says. It was back in 1936 when, as a seventeen-year-old living in Lower Hutt, he first picked up the lap steel guitar. “I liked the sound of the steel guitar. They just sound better. No other instrument sounds the same as a steel guitar, you can’t copy it on any other instrument,” says Jim. During WW11 he joined the army but tuberculosis kept him away from the action.
Post-war the dance band scene was booming and Jim was soon playing regularly at dance halls. A successful audition for the 2YA Orchestra – what is now Radio NZ – led to Jim playing his lap steel guitar for live broadcasts out of a Wellington studio. “It was a terrific time, they were all much better than me so I learnt a lot.” Jim’s contribution to New Zealand’s music history didn’t stop at ‘Blue Smoke’, he went on to play in Ken Avery’s ‘Paekakariki’ and Johnny Cooper’s hits, ‘One by One’, ‘Look What You Done’, and ‘Pie-Cart Rock ‘n’ Roll, and his version of ‘Rock Around the Clock’. In 2015, esteemed kiwi musician Neil Finn visited Jim to make a recording of ‘Blue Smoke’ to mark the centenary of Anzac day. Nowadays Jim says he still plays daily but it is “much for my own amusement”, and his time is spent surfing YouTube where he enjoys watching various steel guitar clips and taking cyber tours to Hawaii, where lap steel guitars originated and he never managed to visit.

New hunting comp based on short films Emily Beaumont
Keen hunter Blair Jones is looking forward to the hunting competition he’s created in memory of a fellow hunting mate. Photo: Supplied.
This Saturday, September 1, marks the start of a six-week “unique” hunting competition with all proceeds going toward a late hunter’s daughter’s education. When Pete Adams had a mole removed and tested from his leg in 2015 the results came back clear, but a couple of years later it became apparent Pete had been misdiagnosed, leaving him to battle stage four melanoma. A battle he lost on July 27 this year. So, when his fellow hunting mate Blair Jones decided he wanted to help Pete in some way he came up with a “hunting competition for everyone”. “It was really the idea of doing something Pete loved to help him and his family out,” says Blair. Aimed to eliminate the pressure of people having to hunt over a weekend or a short period of time, Blair’s created the sixweek competition which will
be judged on videos made from people’s hunts. Judges for the 2-5minute videos that can be created on smart phones, GoPro’s or hand-held video cameras are yet to be announced, and Blair says the public can watch as videos will be constantly uploaded to the Tasman Territory Hunting Competition 2018 Facebook page. A move which he also hopes will also act as motivation for others to sign up to the competition. The categories of shotgun, heavy calibre, blackpowder/ muskets, centre fire, bow hunting and kids hunt, cost $35 per entry with the kid’s category free, and all kids receive a spot prize. Prizes for the competition include guided hunts in Tasman and Central Otago, rifles, knives and clothing. If you’re needing equipment or ammunition, Blair recommends visiting Shane Kelly at Brightwater’s Kelly Country shop, a principle sponsor.
Commercial-free radio station hits local airwaves There’s a new radio station on the airwaves of Tasman who pride themselves on being commercial-free and playing what they feel like. The station was launched across the Tasman on Tuesday, August 21. You can tune into Brian FM at 105.6 to be invaded, they say, “with a station that’s unlike anything offered on the radio dial”. Brian FM delivers a steady diet of Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Imagine Dragons, Split Enz, Green Day, The Mutton Birds, Tears for Fears, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Who, among a plethora of others. They claim to have a playlist that is probably the same size as all other stations added together. “We’re playing what we like, 100% commercial-free, with no DJ’s, and a full-on kiwi sarcastic approach to everything.” While they admit to having a few sponsors to pay the power bill and help buy them new music, the team at Brian FM say you’ll never get in the car and get to work listening to commercials the whole way. Their sponsor messages are around five seconds long and they only play a couple every hour.

Perfecting the icing on the cake Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Spring was in the air as members of the public, and the Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists Guild, attended a cake decorators workshop held on August 18. Around 20 people attended the event to learn from demonstrator Colleen Fellingham, who travelled from Tauranga, to teach everyone the art of making flowers from sugar paste icing. Guild secretary, Desiree Thi-
art, has been a member for five years and absolutely loves it. She first started when she offered to pay for the wedding cake for her daughter-in-law, and was shocked at the price. Instead, Desiree decided to learn the art herself. Wakefield resident Lyn Kearney attended the workshop and says it was a successful day, “everyone who attended really enjoyed the day. Colleen was a superb demonstrator and teacher who encouraged and assisted in a way that everyone from beginners to more experienced decorators could understand.”
Nelson Guild is currently fundraising to host the annual New Zealand-wide Conference for Cake Decorators and Sugar Artists, which is going to be held in Nelson, November 2019. Lyn says, “we will be holding stalls etc, this and next year, to raise funds towards this event. The guild members are very grateful for all the support the public give us when we are out selling our raffles and cakes for fund-raising towards this event.” The guild will have a stall in the Richmond Mall, selling raffles and small cakes for Father’s Day, on September 1.
Local artist Cindy Hutton will be showing her work at the upcoming Art Expo weekend, at the Trafalgar Centre on August 31 – September 2. Photo: Amy Russ.
A weekend for art lovers Artist Cindy Hutton is looking forward to the personal interaction with visitors to this year’s Art Expo Nelson, being held this Friday to Sunday at the Trafalgar Centre. “I do like to meet people who buy my work. It’s different from pieces that are bought in an exhibition and go overseas, and you never meet the buyers.” One piece by Cindy that she will have at the show is an oil painting of the Boat Shed that she created for the ‘Colour Your Life’ tv show. “Graeme Stevenson is an Australian who goes throughout the world profiling artists and what they create in 24 hours. He came over here in October and filmed me for that. It was a great experience and good for my confidence as an artist. I was encouraged that he saw something in my work that he wanted to make a show out of it.” Cindy has since spent seven months painting a further six pieces especially for Art Expo Nelson, the works showcase the

Nelson Matters A major debate on New Zealand’s approach to justice is underway with the Coalition Government’s summit last week and proposals to slash the prison population by 30%. I am open to new ideas as to how we can better prevent young people getting onto the treadmill of our justice system, but equally firm that our first priority must be the victims of crime. The Government’s arbitrary target to reduce the prison population by 30% or 3,000 inmates is a mistake. If you do the crime, you do the time. I see no evidence of excessive sentencing by our courts. It is very rare for people to get a custo-
dial sentence for minor offending. The vast bulk of our prisoners have committed serious multiple crimes. I do not share the moral panic over New Zealand’s imprisonment level. Minister Davis has claimed it’s the second highest in the world. This is factually incorrect as pointed out by justice academic Dr Liam Martin who says we are now fifth and 60th of 220 countries world- wide. The numbers equate to two people per 1,000 population and are growing at about 3% per year, not much more than our population growth. My fear is for public safety with the Government’s plans to soften our bail, parole and sentencing laws.
A controversial issue is National’s ‘Three Strikes law’ passed in 2010 that new Justice Minister Andrew Little wants to repeal. This law only applies to offenders over 18 and to serious, violent and sexual offenders. There is no parole or early release on a second strike and a maximum sentence on a third strike. The three strikes law has been applied to 9,943 cases with 207 in our Nelson court. The average number of criminal convictions for a person on a second strike was 26 and a third strike, 64. These are not one off offenders but serious criminals! Last week this law was applied to a third striker in Whanganui who
beauty of the high country. At this year’s Art Expo Nelson, there will be a chance for art lovers to decide the overall favourite, with a People’s Choice selected by popular vote. A selection panel will help narrow it down to ten pieces first and then the public will choose it from there. The Trafalgar Centre doors open to the public from 10am every day this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (31 August – 2 September). There will be over 100 artists with over 1000 pieces of artworks for sale. Art Expo Nelson has received sponsorship funding for this year’s event from the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme, which is funded by the Nelson City Council. The programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson city’s economy in the shoulder and off season. View Cindys website at; www. cindyhutton.co.nz

got seven years for a stabbing he committed while on bail. He had previously assaulted a person with a piece of wood causing serious injuries and stalked and sexually assaulted a 17 year old. The public needs protecting from these sort of offenders. The three strikes law is keeping the public safer but is also reducing reoffending. When we compare reoffending rates for the five years before and after the law was passed, a third fewer are reoffending. Criminals are getting the message that the public has a low tolerance of repeated violence. The right way to get the prison
population down is not by softening our bail and sentencing laws but by going hard on the causes of crime. I am all for programmes that target drug use including better rehab, improved mental health services and better support for families. We need to get better at targeting effective services at those at-risk children. National will not be opposing everything the Government tries in reforming our justice system. Our focus will be on ensuring any change delivers on making our communities safer and not just letting people out from prisons. Advt.

Harold’s racy new wheels Amy Russ
Thanks to local organisations, Harold the Giraffe, the Life Education Trust’s much-loved mascot, and Ingrid Kemp, Life Education’s educator, have a new vehicle to deliver the trusts important message to children around the region. Life Education Trust is a notfor-profit organisation that visits schools, and with Harold’s help, connects with primary and intermediate-aged children and teaches them important lessons about developing life skills. Chairperson for Life Education Trust, Michelle Fitzgerald, says their last vehicle was getting well past its use-by date. “We were very appreciative when some local organisations helped us out with getting a newer vehicle to help with our cause. Fitzgerald Construction Ltd, the local Freemasons and the Car Company all contributed. “Sportswise Signs and Graphics have done an awesome job signwriting the vehicle at no cost, so you are sure to spot the Haroldmobile around the region.” Michelle says that the Trust reaches over 90% of Nelson Tasman children.

People who own pets often regard them as their ‘best friend’ whom they lovingly cherish and care for. James Cromwell draws the same parallel in his quote: ‘Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life.’ Equally, there are many businesses, organisations and services in Tasman which also take pet care seriously, and provide a range of services to support pets and their owners. For starters, the fabulous dog wash service at Town and Country Vets on McGlashen Avenue allows pet owners to bring their beloved pooch down to the clinic anytime of the day or

Caring for all Creatures great and small Across the Nelson - Tasman region
Responsible dog ownership Here are some handy tips to help you have a hassle free time with your dog. Dog leashes must be carried by owners at all times when they are with their dogs in a public place. Dog faeces must be removed immediately and hygienically disposed of. Doggie Doo bags are available free of charge from all Council Service Centres and dispensers throughout the region. Be respectful of others. Be mindful that most people do not appreciate dogs rushing up to or jumping up on to them and small children especially are intimidated by excited uncontrolled dogs.
More information Phone 543 8400 Website www.tasman.govt.nz
Know your dog. If on any occasion your dog is likely to injure, endanger, or cause distress to any stock, poultry, domestic animal or protected wildlife (Wildlife Act 1953) either avoid the area or ensure your dog is under leash control. Be aware of your surroundings and your dog’s actions, dogs in hunting mode are likely to be a threat to native lizards and ground nesting birds. If in doubt, either avoid the area or ensure your dog is under leash control. Be a “Wet Sand Walker”. Walking your dog below the high tide mark greatly reduces the chance of
disturbing nesting and roosting shorebirds.

dogs. Phil and Chris continued Pets Haven’s same great practises, and have retained a valued, experienced staff member - Janine, who has an extensive background in animal care. The Pets Haven team will be providing smaller groups in the large number of runs to ensure the animals are happy and safe. They will also take time to blend them with the right friends, and recommend individual walks for dogs staying for longer periods to keep them stimulated. On a more serious note, the Tasman District Council reminds dog owners that microchipping will save you time and money. Having your dog go missing is a stressful, time consuming and potentially expensive experience. A dog found at large can be scanned for a microchip by an Animal Control Officer or a Veterinarian. Then microchipped dogs are reunited with their owner with minimal delay and cost, while dogs that cannot be identified are impounded, which is stressful, time consuming and costly. TDC urges pet owners to avoid the hassle and microchip your dog, which is a legal requirement under the Dog Control Act 1996. Meanwhile, June & Arthur Walter – owners/managers of Pets Everafter, are committed to providing the most dignified and respectful care of your departed pet. The couple, who endured the major 2011 Christchurch earthquake, had the sad experience of losing their little dog. Then when they came to live in Nelson, the couple decided they wanted to help people who were grieving, and help them make a positive step to recovery; so when the pet

Runners have spring in their step Nelson runners and walkers enjoyed spring-like conditions for their annual Brightwater run on Saturday, August 25. The event took the athletes on some of the area’s walkways and cycleways, with the standout feature being the ascent and descent of Katania Heights. Comments from the athletes after the race were very positive, with most saying they thought it was a great course this year; that it was a brilliant
race and they loved it. The overall winner of the event was Matt Newberry in a very fast time of 29.46mins. Close behind him was Wayne Leighton in 30.21mins, also a very slick time, and in third place, Scott Howley in 32.04mins. Klaartja Van Schle ran strongly across the line to be the first woman home in a very commendable time of 32.26mins. The second woman home was Colette Read
in 34.13mins and closely behind her, Robyn Deane in 34.27mins. The first walker home was Alan West who finished well clear of the other walkers in 49.49mins. Next Saturday, September 1, is the popular two-person relay from Parkers Cove in Tahunanui and the following Saturday, September 8th, is the second year of the Motueka to Mapua relay, which was a great success last year.

Spruce up for Spring With the glorious Spring season now upon us, what better time to think about sprucing up your garden or outdoor entertainment area. Where gardening’s concerned, Fertilizer New Zealand has lots of sound advice about growing delightful plants like strawberries. After all, who doesn’t like strawberries? Especially the ones you grow yourself. Strawberries are sun-loving plants that will thrive in sunny conditions and well-drained soil. They love plenty of good compost dug in, and when your plants begin to flower, apply fertiliser and mulch around your plants. By keeping your fruit off the soil, they will avoid dis-
eases and rotting, and by watering them regularly, you will get good growth. Strawberries are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases which can be controlled by chemical sprays, however, if you would prefer a more natural, organic solution, then come and talk to us. If mites, aphids, slugs and snails, or birds, are enjoying your strawberries more than you, maybe we can help. To grow plenty of sweet strawberries, give our solid strawberry garden fertiliser and our liquid blood and bone product Synerlogic a go; you won’t believe the difference! So that’s your strawberry patch sorted, what about the spa pool you’ve always

Lodge celebrates 50 years of teaching outdoor education Amy Russ Rotoiti Lodge Outdoor Education Centre is celebrating half a century of providing outdoor education. Police sergeant Noel Oxnam from Murchison first suggested the idea for a youth hall in the early 1960’s, and after significant contributions by the region’s community and Noel’s unfailing enthusiasm and drive, he was able to see his vision realized with its official opening in 1968. The site has hosted school camps, youth organizations, outdoor education, sports groups, weddings, family gatherings, cultural groups and numerous club and craft groups. Russell Ferens, director of the Lodge, started working there in 2006 as an instructor before progressing onto his current position. He estimates they have seen over 1,400 weeks of school camps, over 65,000 students and teachers. After holding an open day in February this year, Russell says he enjoyed hearing from some of the people who attended their stories of how the Lodge had featured in their lives, from the building of it to their experiences of going to camp there. “It always makes me smile to hear how something that happened on camp years ago had an effect on someone, and helped them to learn a bit more about themselves or change a direction that

One of the strengths of the Lodge is the range of user groups that use it and I get a kick when students tell me how their grandparents have been telling them about coming here for camp and I hope that those same students may in the future tell their grandchildren, that’s something pretty special.” With the building showing signs of ageing, the Whakatu Rotary Club, with help from several other clubs across the district, is currently fund-raising to help with re-fitting the aged and out-dated lodge kitchen. Whakatu Rotarian and the Lodge
fund-raisers’ project leader, Trevor Marshall, says the club has taken the lodge on as their community project. He says they are getting a strong response from the public and businesses, for them to want to be involved. “The Rotary club was involved in the building process of the Lodge from the very beginning. “We see this as a great opportunity for Rotary to recognize that and preserve it as much as we can. The goal is to give it a complete makeover, a fully completed kitchen, a refurbished living room, full double glazing, big

Players battle it out for Hockey Championship Nelson Hockey hosted this year’s Tasman Secondary Schools (TSS) Hockey Championships on August 15 & 16. Three teams competed in the girls competition and four teams competed in the boys. The girls championship was retained by Waimea College, after winning both tightly contested games against Nelson College for Girls. Garin College entered a mixed team which saw them dominate one match against each girls team, but the girls fighting back in the other game to draw. In the boys side the first match saw a draw between Waimea College and Nelson College which meant Nelson College retain the Wilkens
Trophy. Marlborough Boys College travelled across for the tournament and added another layer to the tournament. But the Championship was decided in the last game where Nelson College had to beat Nayland College by 5 for them to pip rivals Waimea College. Nayland College fought hard and were able to keep Nelson College to 3 goals, meaning Waimea College completed the double again for 2018. Nelson Hockey Association (NHA) would like to thank Sport Tasman and, in particular, Jeni Thornborough, Ally and Zachs Cafe for feeding the troops, all the umpires who did multiple games, and all the coaches, managers and players from each team!

Junior tennis players cross the strait for comp A combined Nelson, Blenheim and Tasman junior tennis team travelled to Wellington over the weekend of 25 and 26 August. They were there to compete in the annual representative fixture against Hutt Valley. A home advantage along with strong competition in the 14’s age group meant a challenge for the Tasman team. Four age categories compete for this trophy; 10 years through to 16 years. Tasman 10’s came through with a win 7/5, their singles matches
proving the turning point, winning 5 out of 8. The 12’s team had a close call, going down 14/10 to Hutt Valley, with the 14’s team being challenged by stronger players across the board, tipping the fixture in Hutt Valley’s favour with a 23/1 win by Hutt Valley. Despite the 14/10 win to Hutt Valley, the 16’s age group displayed more evenly competed matches; Alex Brogan (Richmond Club) had a particularly good fixture winning all four of his matches, with exciting 3 set doubles match-
es in both the mixed and the doubles; Alex Brogan & Christie Gilbert (Richmond Club) beat Alex Randall & Sophie Painter 6/3, 2/6, 10/7, and Brogan & Sam Innes-Walker (Nelson Club) beat Alex Randall & Liam Nicol 4/6, 6/1, 10/7. Overall score 56/28 to Hutt Valley. This is a valuable opportunity to combine with Blenheim and compete as a Tasman team gaining experience against other regions. Early in September the Tennis Hot Shots in Schools programme
linking to Have a Go open day kicks off. Tennis Hot Shots in Schools is taking place at 38 primary schools throughout the region during the third term. Tennis Hot Shots is the national starter tennis programme for New Zealand children. The programme is just for kids. Smaller courts, shorter racquets and softer balls mean that kids can play a proper game of tennis from the moment they step on court. On Saturday, September 15, the ‘Have a Go Day’ at all tennis
clubs throughout the region will take place. Forty-two primary and intermediate schools are invited to one-hour of free coaching dedicated to their school at a club close to them. Later in September on the 22nd and 23rd, Talley’s junior spring open tournament will be held at Richmond Tennis Club. The juniors will once again have an opportunity to compete against players from further afield when they come up against Canterbury on Sunday, October 14, in a junior fixture.

Te Totara volleyball teams excel in Queensland tournament Forty of the region’s youth volleyballers, representing Nelson Bays under the Te Totara Development Programme, headed across the Tasman to take on Queensland Secondary Schools in early August. The tour provided opportunity for these young players to play competitive volleyball and to see how they measured up against the schools from Queensland. The trip was successful beyond expectation. Three of the four
teams reached the semi-finals in their divisions. The U17 boys team played extremely well through a tough Division 1 grade to only just get pipped at the end and miss out on a medal, finishing in 4th place. The U17 girls team played in the top U17 Girls Honours Grade and came away from the tournament in 6th place. The U19 Boys and Girls were entered in the top tournament division - U20 Honours Grade. The
U19 Girls turned last season’s 8th place finish into a silver medal this year. Finishing second in the pool they went on to play a quarter-final where they battled through in another 5-set game. The final went back and forth on points only to fall 16-14 in the 5th set - so close to the title. An outstanding finish to their tournament. The U19 Te Totara boys teams had a target on their back from the start of the tournament, hav-
ing taken the title in 2017 along with MVP honours. With only 3 players returning from last year’s title team, it was a relatively new team to take on this challenge and a goal was set to reach the semis. The team played through all four of the pool play matches undefeated. The boys battled hard to play for gold once again with a 17-15 win. The boys regrouped after the semi-final marathon and Jacob Bryan led the team in a haka be-
fore taking the court to battle for gold. Josh Mead captained the team with a strong setting plan and huge one-on-one blocking to push the team to back-to-back titles with a convincing 3-0 win (25-22; 25-20; 25-12). Back to back champions! An outstandingly successful tournament and huge experience for the Te Totara teams, backed by an extraordinary group of coaches, managers and supporters, and the colleges within our region.

Richmond footballers claim senior season’s first silverware With the junior season officially over, there were some friendlies played between teams to finish off. However, Alan and Marion Mathews have a couple of weeks left with the 1st Kicks and Fun Football kids, and the reports say that approximately 50 kids between the ages of 4 and 7 don’t really want to finish and are already looking forward to next year! Saturday, August 25, also saw a handful of senior cup semi’s and finals being played around the region, with the majority out at Wakefield domain. And in perfect sunny conditions, the first piece of senior cup silverware was picked up by a Richmond team when the Thompson Daly Chartered Accountants Richmond Thistle lads beat Motueka 2 – 0 in the Glen Stephens Cup Final. At Jubilee Park, the 1.15pm
Henry’s
games saw the Sprig and Fern Richmond Stags going down to Mapua, the Global Wings Richmond Colts lost to the Tasman Auto Electrics Richmond Bogans, and the Fresh Choice Richmond Hornbills were beaten by Golden Bay. At 3pm, in another local derby, players from the earlier games stayed around and watched the Richmond women’s 1st Division Hot House Foxes go 2–0 up over the About Beauty at Monaco Swans. This coming weekend sees six more senior cup finals being played to finish off the season, all being hosted at Jubilee Park. The Richmond Thistle boys are in action again when they take on FC Nelson in the AR Hurst 3rd Div Cup Final at 1pm. And also at 1pm, the Tasman Auto Electrics Richmond Bogans play FC Nelson Masters in the

A well-balanced Tasman B rugby squad has been named for the 2018 season. The team’s campaign will include matches against Otago, Canterbury, Wellington and Southland Development teams. Their first game will be against Otago on September 1 in Christchurch. The B team will act as a direct feeder option to the Tasman Mako Mitre 10 Cup squad, with halfbacks Jack Grooby and Ben Finau, plus lock Mike Curry, having already featured in the season opener, against Canterbury on Friday. The squad is a mixture of players from the Tasman Griffins and Red Devils squads, plus the Mako wider group, many having played together already this season as part of the Mako pre-season campaign. Ten players who turned out for Marlborough-based clubs have been included in the 29-strong squad. This season the squad will be coached by long-standing Marlborough Boys’ College First XV coach Gray Cornelius, with help from Renwick premier coach Glenn Blackmore and former All Blacks prop Kane Hames.
All players are asked to assemble for training at the Beachcomber Motel opposite Tahuna fields for a 6.30pm start on Wednesday, August 29.
