Town Hall gets quake upgrade

The Richmond Town Hall is at the top of the list of public buildings that will be strengthened to meet national earthquake standards after the Tasman District Council agreed to spend $442,000 on earthquake-proofing five of its buildings around the district. The council allocated $500,000 towards the seismic upgrading of its community buildings in its 2014-2015 draft annual plan and

last week its Community Development committee decided where that funding would be spent. The Richmond Town Hall was designated as a top priority based on a number of criteria including usage, cost of the repairs, historic significance and proximity of other similar buildings. The Richmond Town Hall is one of five buildings that will be upgraded to meet the national standard of 34 per cent of the

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz new building standard. The council agreed to spend $83,400 on the Richmond Town Hall as well as $93,600 on the Motueka Memorial Hall, $35,000 on the Bainham Hall, $180,000 on the Riwaka Hall and

$50,000 on the Motueka Museum. The Richmond Town Hall has a seismic rating of less than 30 per cent and will need some internal re-fitting to meet the required standard. Sport Tasman staff, who use the building, will have to be relocated while the upgrade is completed.

“We made the Richmond Town Hall a priority on its significant use,” committee chair Judene Edgar says. “It’s also only a relatively small amount of work that’s needed to bring it up to standard.” The Wakefield Hall missed out on funding with council deciding to reconsider the hall at a later date along with other buildings. A report to council stated that a new Wakefield or Brightwater community facility is proposed in the long term plan although Judene says that is looking “less likely” because council is determined to reduce debt strengthening the Wakefield Hall is estimated to cost $93,600. Judene says the Brightwater Hall, Hope Hall, Spring Grove Hall and Murchison Service Centre and Library are all regarded as lower earthquake risks, based on their age and construction, and will have seismic assessments in the next few months. The Mapua Wharf Building and Armadillos, which are owned by council, met the required standards.

Tasman Kaumatua Arch Deacon Andy Joseph blesses the new gateway at a ceremony on Saturday. Photo: Susan Fenemor.

Tapawera gateway finally opened The opening of the Tapawera Gateway last Saturday marked the end of an eight year long dream for Tapawera resident, and chairman of the Tapawera Promotions Association, Duncan Wilson. Brian Flintoff designed the carved gateway which represents unity and includes the Maori and European history of the region with Kahurangi explorer, Thomas Brunner, on one side and his lifelong friend and Maori guide, E Kehu, on the other side of the gateway. It is located in the community centre gardens, village centre and it is hoped that it will attract more tourists to the area with only a 10 kilometre drive to the Wangapeka track in the Kahurangi National Park. Duncan and secretary of the

association, Colin Ball, first put a gateway proposal to the Tasman District Council in May 2009. The project was then developed further with other locals including Tapawera School principal, Kelvin Woodley, Richard Davis, Kate Radloff, Maurice Taylor and Sharon Rogers, joining the committee to help drive the project. “We were aware that thousands of people travel through Tapawera each year and we wanted to have something, a focal point, to let the people know about the sights and sounds of Tapawera,” says Duncan. Carved by master carver, Mark

Davis from Nelson, the gateway also features the Wangapeka track and river plus carvings depicting the gold prospecting, timber and foodgrowing history of the area. A kaitiaki, Maori guardian rock, has been placed in the middle of the gateway to symbolise Mt Arthur looking over the Kahurangi. It also features native gardens, native timber seating areas and information on local history. Stage three of the project, still in progress, includes a community centre which will be a hub to promote local arts and crafts and tourism operators. “We want the gateway to be the beginning of growing Tapawera tourism and help locals to have a better understanding of our history,” says Duncan.

FROM PAGE 1 and Christchurch Boys High. Although Larry’s career path to the top job at Waimea appeared to have been carefully mapped out, he says it was never planned that way. In fact, Larry admits he never intended to be a teacher and “got into the job quite by accident”. “When I was a student at Nelson College I really loved science, so when I left school I became a science technician with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Then I wanted to get some more qualifications so I went to university to do a science degree but I had no money so I took a teaching scholarship. “I only did it to pay my way through university I had no intention of going teaching. But when I graduated I went relief-teaching at Christchurch Boys High and found I loved it. “It’s interesting, though, because my career path was never planned. I just applied for the jobs as they came up and here I am 43 years later.” Larry says one of the biggest challenges he has faced at Waimea College has been managing the school’s rapid growth. The school has grown from 1100 students to 1550 in the last 12 years and they have worked hard to ensure that “the school hasn’t got so big that students get lost”. Larry says it has been “a really difficult decision” to leave Waimea but he feels the timing is right. The school is “in good heart” and he is also keen to expand his role as a mentor with the Principals Programme run by Centre for Educational Leadership at University of Auckland. “It’s been a really difficult decision because I have a real passion about teaching. We also have great staff and students here but the time is right for me to go and let someone else with fresh ideas take over. “I’ve also been doing some mentoring in recent years and have had to fit it around everything

else, so now I’ll get the chance to focus on that. I work with new principals and help them with things like learning how to manage staff issues, make community connections and develop a vision for their schools.” Larry says he has had many highlights during his time at Waimea including seeing the school’s students excel at sporting and musical competitions, opening new buildings like the school’s $2.4million gymnasium and working with “such dedicated and talented teachers”. “Last week I attended the sports prizegiving and the level of achievement of those young people blew me away. I always enjoy watching school sport and when I told my wife I was resigning she said ‘good, I’ll be able to see you at weekend without going to sport’.” Larry says there haven’t been too many downsides to the job although reflects that it is always “incredibly sad and emotionally tough when you lose a staff member or a student”. The battle to secure funding for the school’s new gym, after the Ministry of Education “changed the rules”, was also a difficult period for the school. School Board of Trustees deputy chair, Sue Malthus says Larry has been a wonderful principal and his unexpected resignation came as a big shock at last board week’s meeting. “Waimea College has been so lucky to have Larry. He is such a good leader of the board and his staff. The parents and students have a lot of respect for him too. He has such a good rapport with his students and he’s always been so approachable. “Larry has always been totally honest with us and we have had a great relationship based on that trust. He’s also been very good at tackling the big issues head on and making the right decision quickly - he will be a huge loss.” Sue says Associate Principal, Graeme Smith, will take up the role of acting principal until the board appoints Larry’s replacement.

Property insights

How important is it to have your property featured on the most popular web sites? The answer is very important.

Genuine buyers are waiting for new listings to come to the market. They will log onto the web sites several times a day, they will have registered buyer alerts and they will want to view the property ahead of any open homes. These people are very serious about purchasing and they will be attracted to your property by the web site presentation, most importantly by the photographs. Your photographs should be representative of the property and the property features and they must be sharp and enticing. Pre-photo preparation is critical - de-clutter, have the bed covers smooth and flat surfaces clear, showers should be free of personal items, towels neatly folded, curtains should be evenly drawn. The gardens should be tidy, unhealthy pot plants removed or replaced, lawns cut and children’s play areas tidy and organised. Outside photos should be taken when the house is in full sun. Dark shadows do not look attractive but sometimes cannot be avoided.

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

Your agent should be mindful of all of the above and be able to work with you to ensure that your property is presented to the market in the best possible way. It does take a little effort to get it right but you will be rewarded by a positive response to your web site presentation.

Happy selling.

Government money needed for dam Federated Farmers are urging the government to support the Tasman District Council’s Waimea Community Dam project to prevent a critical shortage of water for urban and farming development. The council is presently holding a public consultation process for the dam in the Lee Valley which is designed to store water for irrigation and urban and industrial users. It will cost around $74.6 million with irrigators expected to contribute a significant proportion of the funds. “It’s not a matter of whether the

dam goes ahead, it is how it goes ahead,” Federated Farmers Nelson provincial president, Martin O’Connor says. “We are living in a catch 22, because the build is likely to cost irrigators $520 per hectare and increase rates by 11 cents per cubic metre a year, but our rural and urban communities cannot survive without it. “The Nelson-Tasman region is drying up whilst its population is growing at an exceptional rate. The significance of this is not lost

on the community after the 2001 drought dried the rivers up for three weeks and salt water was detected near the TDC water take.” Martin says the district is extremely sensitive to changes in water flow and during a drought water takes are stopped, when farmers need water the most. He says the water insecurity is also stunting urban and business growth. “The social and economic benefits of the dam reach far beyond the Waimea community, but it needs to be affordable. Right now the

100

%

cost of the dam is pushing us into a desperate situation, but with the council’s and government’s support we can make this work, by softening the financial blow over time. Martin says the dam is the “most important single infrastructure investment the Tasman community will make in ensuring a sustainable future for our community”. “I only hope that it is not just the ratepayers who will be footing the bill for the next generations,” he says.

Getting ‘haka fit’ for nationals

text = BookmanITC Lt Bt

Nelson’s kapahaka group are being put through their paces in an effort to get “haka fit” for the national kapahaka festival next year. Te Whatukura Kapahaka club has been doing fitness sessions with Greg Witika at Wairua Body Coaching Systems in Stoke. After a solid workout, Greg makes the group perform in the gym to get them used to performing with a high heart rate. And they hope it will help them during the competition in Christchurch in March. Awhina Kihi – a co-tutor and performer with the Te Whatukura Kapahaka club – came up with the idea, and says it is just the first step in a plan to use traditional movement and performing arts to inspire and motive local Maori and Pacific Islanders to embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle.

“With over twenty years involvement with Kapahaka, I have learnt it is the perfect vehicle for Māori and Pacific cultures to become involved in an active and healthy lifestyle,” she says. Greg says there is more to becoming haka fit than physical strength and stamina and he’s coaching the performers to utilise natural movement. “But we’re also talking about nutrition and belief in oneself, so that on the day the group can step out with confidence knowing they are going to give the very best they can.” After the work with the kapahaka group, Awhina’s vision for a community outreach programme is taking shape, with the successful completion of the first stage of a funding application with Te Pūtahitanga. If final funding is granted, they plan to take the programme to the wider community.

Brightwater sending presents to Pacific Islands Simon Bloomberg Brightwater School and the Brightwater Community Church are helping to make this Christmas a lot happier for children in the Pacific Islands by getting behind Operation Christmas Child. For the last two years, the church has packed up presents in shoe boxes for children aged up to 14 to be donated to Operation Christmas Child. The international charity programme is organised by Christian relief organisation, Samaritan’s Purse, and has sent more than 100 million shoeboxes full or presents to needy children around the world since 1993. And this year the church approached Brightwater School principal, Gerald Baldwin, to help out and the school got right behind the project with each classroom contributing a shoebox full of presents for a boy and a girl. That brought the total number of shoeboxes contributed by the Brightwater community up to 95, almost double last year’s total. “We thought it would be good to include the school and Gerald said they would be happy to come on board,” school parent Sarah Matheson says. “The first year the church did it they had 20 boxes and last year they had 50 so the school has helped it grow to about 90.” Sarah’s mother, Ele Smeaton, who initiated the church’s involvement in Operation Christmas Child, says the project had “become a real community effort”. “I saw a brochure about it and thought it was a good idea so I went to our pastor, Martin Harrison, and we got it underway. The church got right behind it and now we are involving the community more and more.’ Year three pupil, Kaelen Grafton, says he put some colouring-in pens and sticker and toys in the shoebox he helped fill. Other boxes included clothing, tennis balls, balloons, soft toys and pencil cases. “We have lots here and we don’t need so much so it’s a good idea to share it around,” Kaelen says.

Marilyn Andrews in the new pop-up art gallery on Trafalgar St. Photo: Andrew Board.

A pop-up art gallery has opened on Trafalgar St and the artist behind it says it’s a fantastic way for people to check out some local art in time for Christmas. The gallery is in the building where Foxy Lady was, opposite SBS Bank. Artist Marilyn Andrews says this is the third pop-up art gallery she has opened. “We fill the void in between tenancies so we’re on a week-to-week lease, which means if people want to see it they have to get in quick.” There are 11 artists with work on dis-

play at the new gallery and Marilyn says it’s a nice collaboration. “We share the load, share the costs and share the space, and it gives local artists an outlet to show their work. It works out really well.” The pop-up gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and Marilyn is encouraging people to get in quick. “We really don’t know how long we’re here for, it could be two weeks or it could be twenty weeks.”

Tapawera gears up for agricultural show Teddy bear shearing, medieval archery and dogs rounding up ducks will feature at this year’s Tapawera Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Show. The teddy bear shearing competition, which takes place in a working woolshed, complete with wooden hand shearers, proved very popular last year. Promotions coordinator, Belinda Palmer, hopes that other events such as best fancy dressed pet and dog with the loudest bark competitions will be just as popular. Possum Bourne’s number 23 rally car will also be on display at the show and you can have your photo taken in it for a small donation, all proceeds from this will go to Christchurch’s Bone Marrow Cancer Trust. The show, which was established during the Second World War, was coordinated by the education sector to teach children animal and livestock husbandry to help out on the farm whilst the men were away fighting. Today, Tapawera

Miniature show gets big support Nelson Miniatures Club hosted the 2014 New Zealand Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Convention last week which culminated in an exhibition of miniature displays at Waimea College. The theme for the exhibition was “Bon Appétit” and included miniature displays of all shapes and sizes created by association members and clubs throughout New Zealand. A wedding marquee complete with lights, dressed tables and wedding buffet was created by Mary and Jeff Saxton from Richmond. Their exhibit took a year to complete with Jeff building the structure and Mary making all of the finer details such as serviettes and flowers by hand. Nelson miniature club member, Rae van der Logt, created several displays for the exhibit and enjoys working on the time consuming miniatures “it allows you to use all of your creative skills including painting, woodwork, book binding and knitting,” says Rae. The 15 working members of the Nelson Miniatures Club were thrilled with the steady flow of visitors to the event and were very thankful for the wonderful volunteer support they received from the local community.

Locals renting out homes for tourists: I have been alerted to a story that you have recently run on holiday houses. As an association we have nothing against people renting their houses out for short term accommodation. We do, however take considerable umbrage at the amazing unfairness perpetuated by councils that allow such an unfair playing field. Private homes compete directly with commercial accommodation but are not required to have the same safety features and compliance issues that commercial accommodation providers are compelled to have. Domestic accommodation providers are not required to pay the hefty costs levied by councils that commercial accommodators are compelled to bear. They are provided with services for free by councils that are a cost to commercial accommodation providers and they make no contribution to the running of Nelson Tasman Tourism that commercial accommodation providers are, again by the council, compelled to make. We believe that domestic accommodators are a vital part of the accommodation offer in any market but they shouldn’t be subsidised by all the other ratepayers. They shouldn’t be able to offer substandard accommodation and they shouldn’t be allowed to freeload off those that they compete with by not supporting the sterling work being done by Nelson Tasman Tourism. We believe that a council serving the best interests of their community should address these issues and not assiduously

ignore them. The council is putting their community and their visitors at risk! All that we ask for is a level playing field on which to compete. Michael Baines, Chief Executive, Motel Association of New Zealand. Ripping people off, greedy sods. Brenda Kenny. I think it’s a great idea... bring tourists, such as families who may not like to stay in motels. They spend money in Nelson and boost local business. Also gives people a break from the mortgage for a while. No brainer really if they have somewhere else to stay, such as extended family. Amanda Duncan. Makes it hard for struggling motels who have gone through a long winter. Bonita Wilkinson. Items stolen off clothes line: Yes [it happened to me] but yonks ago, when I lived in Stoke. Towels, jumpers and some kids clothing. But she was caught. Jeez, that’s real desperate measures right there. Sharon May Patterson. Years ago in The Wood my daughter and I lost bras and knickers. Reported it to the police. A while later a whole lot of undies were found in the bush. A guy was charged. Ours weren’t among them, guess the guy must have liked ours so much he decided to wear them. Nelsonians do the ‘Nelson’

Tuesday was 111 days until Nelson hosts its first Cricket World Cup game and to celebrate, Nelsonians did the “Nelson”. The “Nelson” involves getting one or both feet off the ground to ward off bad luck on scores of 111. Some players believe bad things will happen on that score. It may be considered unlucky because the number resembles a wicket without bails. Standing on one leg, or if you’re sitting down, keeping both feet off the ground is supposed to prevent disaster until the score changes. The mayor of Nelson did the “Nelson” at Civic House on Tuesday as did students from local schools. The first game to be played at Saxton Oval is between the West Indies and Ireland on March 5. But the Festival of Cricket starts on February 14, when New Zealand and Sri Lanka play the opening game in Christchurch. It will include a giant Nelson 111 Street Party, featuring a market day, local wine, beer and food, and a big screen to

Bowes celebrate 60 years of marriage It was destiny that brought Neil and Shirley Bowe together but it still took a little bit of prompting from Shirley to arrange the date that led to 60 years of happy marriage. The Brightwater couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with 27 family members in Nelson last Thursday. Neil and Shirley were married in St Columbus Church in Naenae, Wellington ,on 23 October, 1954 after meeting at Neil’s uncle and aunt’s place two years earlier. Neil says he moved to Wellington from Inangahua to find work after “a disagreement with my father on the front lawn”. He stayed with his uncle and aunt, who lived two doors from Shirley’s family, and it was only a matter of time before the two met. “Shirley used to babysit for my uncle and aunt so I got to know her soon after I moved to Wellington. Then I got home from work one night and my aunt said ‘you’d better go out and buy a corsage because Shirley wants to take you to her work’s ball’ - I had to buy a suit as well.” A year after their first date, Neil proposed to Shirley and asked her parents for their permission to marry their daughter at the same time. “I went to her parents for a meal and brought the subject up at the dinner table,” Neil says. “It wasn’t really a traditional proposal but everyone seemed to agree it was a good idea.” Shirley says they moved to Nelson about a year after they got married and

Shirley and Neil Bowe of Brightwater with a card from the Queen and photos from their wedding day after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary last week. Insert: Neil and Shirley Bowe on their wedding day on October 23, 1954. Neil, who had worked as a spraypainter for Ford and then General Motors in Wellington, got a job as bushman with Valletta Sawmill in Hope. They started a family, raising three girls, Melanie, Christine and Brenda, who all still live in Nelson, and a boy, Peter, who lives in Melbourne. “We came down to Nelson to see my auntie and bought a section on Main Rd Hope for 164 pounds,” Shirley says. “We put a house on it and we’ve been in Nelson ever since.”

(No naked flames)

Shirley says the secret to their long and happy marriage has been spending a lot of time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and keeping busy and working hard. A former champion axeman, Neil, still cuts up firewood for all his family while Shirley helps out with the stacking. Neil and Shirley have 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who now call Neil “Chop-chop” after seeing him hard at work splitting wood for the family.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm, beautiful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. It wouldn’t be a Labour weekend if the weather was perfect, however Saturday morning was the pick of the days with boats galore at Tasman and Okiwi Bay boat ramps. Gusty winds made fishing difficult on Sunday and Monday, although a few DBFC members managed to sneak out in Pelorus Sound in sheltered waters and land a couple of big reds as the snapper start moving up the sound. Scallops are still plentiful and in good nick. The odd kingfish was caught at D’urville but the snapper were the winners overall. Reports of snapper ranging from 1 kg to 10kg having been caught in Tasman Bay, but still not in huge numbers yet as the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in, and with a wet week ahead it will further slow them down a bit more. The kayakers have informed us they have been catching gurnard, kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks, with small bits of pillies, have been doing the damage. Last Sunday, the Dawnbreakers

Fishing Club had their first club social day, held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. Over 50 members attended making it a great turnout for the season opener. It is a great way to meet like-minded people in a social environment and find out what’s going on fishing-wise in your own back-yard. As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promoting safety on the water, by encouraging and discounting the price to members to partake in a Day Skippers’ course. We believe that everyone who owns a watercraft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club calendar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/bag limits on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very informative and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. To join or find out more about the club, email us at dawnbreakersfc@ gmail.com

Just a thought...

By David McBride, senior pastor, Richmond Baptist Church

In his book, “Love Beyond Reason” John Ortberg tells the story of his sister Barbara and her doll Pandy. Pandy was given to Barbara by an aunty for Christmas. Pandy became Barbara’s favourite toy. Pandy had lost most of her hair, one arm was missing and she had had most of the stuffing knocked out of her. But Pandy hadn’t always looked like that. When she was young she was a good looker, and Barbara loved her. She took her to bed with her; she sat at the table with her. Barbara’s love for Pandy was pretty near a fatal attraction. By the time brother John came along Pandy was a mess, to be truthful. She was no longer a valuable doll. However Barbara loved her as much when she was a raggedy doll as she

had when she was beautiful. Once when the family went on holiday and had covered 100 miles of the return trip to home, Barbara discovered that Pandy wasn’t in the car. Without a question Dad turned the car around and headed back to the hotel. No Pandy in the room – it had been stripped of the linen. Down to the laundry and out of a sheet came Pandy before she got washed to death. Barbara’s love for Pandy was such she would have driven half-way round the world for her. You see, it was the nature of Barbara’s love for Pandy that made her valuable. She loved her in such a way it made her precious. All her tears and hugs and secrets got mixed in the rags somehow. She loved that doll when she was beautiful and when she was ragged. She did not love her because she was beautiful, she loved

her with the kind of love that made her beautiful. We are all raggedy dolls. Flawed, wounded, broken and bent. Partly our raggedness is something that happened to us, our genes, our parents, and we have each made our own deposits into our ragged account. We deceive when we should have spoken the truth; we grumble when a word of praise was deserved. Like a splash of ink in water our raggedness permeates our whole being. Yes, we may be unlovely, but we are not unloved. At the cross of Calvary, Christ proved that. We are valuable because we are loved. We may feel ragged and had the stuffing knocked out of us, but we are loved anyway. Our value is because of what is in the heart of the One who loves us. Jesus didn’t come 100 miles, He came from heaven to earth for you.

NEWPORTS AERIAL POSSUM CONTROL OPERATION Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advice the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purposes of controlling possums in the Newport’s area. The operation is being undertaken on behalf of TBfree New Zealand to protect local farms from bovine tuberculosis infection.

Control Area: The Newport’s aerial treatment area spans approximately 2,400 hectares of forestry, public conservation land, and private farmland between the Motueka River and the Baton River north-west of Tapawera Township. A detailed map of the operational area can be viewed at the local Department of Conservation offices in Nelson and Motueka between 9:00am and 4:00pm week days. If you require more specific details of the control area, please contact Vector Free Marlborough Ltd on the contacts below.

Commencement Date The operation will commence with the application of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets. Following the completion of pre-feeding, the aerial application of cereal pellets containing Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) will commence on or thereafter 7 November 2014, weather dependant.

Bait Description: Pre-feed: Non-toxic cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, non-dyed (brown in colour). Nelson’s Nike designer wins top award Matt Holmes has a lot of shoes, and not all of them are his. There’s Michael Johnson’s gold-medalwinning sprint shoe, light as a feather, signed by the man himself. There’s Roger Federer’s custom-made tennis shoe, so big and wide it renders Johnson’s elf-like. He even has a scary-looking agestained innersole from the 1960s - the original blueprint, he says, sticking out his sneakered foot, of his Nike Frees. Born in England, the Nelsonraised 45-year-old is the creative director of innovation in global footwear at Nike. For 17 years he’s been based in Portland, Oregon, quietly going about his work. Then the New Zealand Institute of Design called with good news - an invitation to fly him home to Auckland this month to receive the John Britten Black Pin for achievements in design. The same night he flew in, he gave a speech about what it’s like to head one of the top design departments in the world. He heads a team of 23 designers in the innovation lab for the world’s most recognisable sportswear brand. It’s a job that requires equal parts logic and creativity, and an ability to predict the future. “You’re always looking at things through the eyes of the

Matt Holmes flew home from the US this month to receive a top honour from the New Zealand Institute of Design. Photo: NZ Herald. athlete. It’s always, ‘what’s next’? I’m constantly researching new materials, new technologies, new insights,” he says. “Athletes are changing. They’re getting a heck of a lot stronger, fitter, faster, so there are much higher demands on the product. It has to evolve with them.” Matt took science at school but his real passion was sport. He grew up idolising Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Chris Lewis and, at Nelson College, played any sport he could. At 13, he and his mates would even break into the

sports centre at midnight, throw on the floodlights and play tennis until 2am. Meanwhile, his shoes got a hiding, so rather than replace them with money he didn’t have, he’d spend hours fashioning durable solutions. Well before kids scooted along the footpath on wheeled sneakers, Matt was attaching the top of a roll-on deodorant to his shoes to minimise friction. Call it fate, but the day he figured out his future was the day he forked out for a pair of Nikes. As he left the shop, a silver sports

car drove past, and he had an epiphany. “It clicked in my head somebody’s making these things, deciding what they look like and what they do. I went to school the next day and my teacher said, ‘That’s industrial design’. ‘What’s that?’ He gave me a VHS about manufacturing at Philips radios. I watched it and thought, ‘That’s my job’.” Matt went on to study at Wellington Polytechnic School of Design, before getting a job at Fisher & Paykel. But, by 28, it was time to stretch

his wings. He flew to San Francisco and met with Ideo, Sony, Tonic and finally Apple, where he met British designer Jonathan Ive, the company’s senior vice-president. “Jonathan said to me, ‘Are you sure you really want to do computers? It looks like you’re kinda into sport’.” When Matt agreed, the gods intervened once again. Ive knew a designer who’d just left Nike. “He told them, ‘Fly this man up’. So they flew me up and I got the job.” Over the years he’s worked with All Blacks, Kobe Bryant, Serena Williams, Justin Gatlan, Maria Sharapova and his favourites, Roger Federer and “Rafa” Nadal. Holmes also helped to revolutionise Nike’s commitment to sustainable footwear, designing shoes that produce next to no waste. Best of all, he says, his work has given him a sense of purpose knowing he’s inspiring children to be fitter and healthier. “I’m doing what I did as a kid, what I did when I was at design school. I’ve been on a constant course and what I did then I’m doing now, just at a higher level. That’s what I love about it.” This story originally appeared in the Weekend Herald canvas magazine.

Pursuant to the provisions contained in the Navigation Safety Bylaw, the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri swimming and water-ski areas and a uplift of the 5 knot speed restriction for those involved in the annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ event, between the hours of 2.00 pm and 7.30 pm on Friday 14 November 2014, and 8.00 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 15 November 2014, (backup day 16 November 2014, 8.00 am – 5.00 pm). The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing or swimming from occurring within that area within the time specified. Event marshals have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to Waka Ama and support vessels directly involved in the event between Anawera Point and Guilbert Point, including Fisherman Island but excluding Otuwhero Inlet and Little Kaiteriteri. A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event, and these conditions may be viewed by contacting the Motueka Waka Ama Club, or Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on, Ph. 03 543 8400 during office hours.

Feedback sought on community engagement The Tasman District Council is to adopt a Significance and Engagement Policy. What is that you may ask? Engagement is a responsibility the Council takes very seriously. Community input to decisions is key to ensuring the views of residents and ratepayers are taken into account. Significance in this context is about how the Council will assess the ’significance ‘ of its decisions in relation to the effect they may have on people, assets, Council finances or the District as a whole. Once assessed it will determine and guide the level of engagement the Council should invest in. The Council already has separate policies for both significance and engagement however, recent amendments to the Local Government Act have determined there should be one policy covering both subjects. The Council has taken the opportunity to review the policies as a result of the legislative change and is looking for feedback prior to the policy’s adoption on 20 November 2014. The Significance and Engagement policy and feedback forms can be found online at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and in the Council’s service centres and libraries. Feedback closes 4.00 pm, 30 October 2014.

Double Olympic champion shot-putter, Valerie Adams, is making the most of her enforced injury break by inspiring young New Zealanders to “get away from their electronic games and screens” and into physical activity and sport. Valerie has been touring the country as part of a NZ Post-sponsored activity programme, ActiverPost, which came to Nelson last Thursday. The four-times world champion joined about 200 schoolchilden aged five to eight from around the region at Saxton Field athletics track where she went through a series of Get Set Go activities developed by Athletics New Zealand. “It’s been fun working with kids around the country and connecting with the community,” Valerie says. “They are the future of this country so we need to encourage them to keep active and healthy. “It’s not about finding the next track and field star. It’s about inspiring these young people through events like

Local powerlifter named in NZ team Monique Bergman Richmond’s Michelle Welsh has only been powerlifting for a year, but she has already been selected in the New Zealand powerlifting team. Michelle competed at the National Powerlifting Championships in August this year in Christchurch, where she placed third overall in the women’s 85kg+ weight class. She says that gave her the confidence to complete an application form for the New Zealand team. She was successful and will represent New Zealand at the Asia and Oceania Powerlifting Championships held in Melbourne in December. “I sent away the application after placing third at the nationals, but I never thought I would be successful. I am really surprised to have come as far as I have,” says Michelle. She competed at the National Championships with the flu and a broken toe, but still managed to squat 125kgs, bench press 65kgs and deadlift 155kgs. “I know I can do better and I am looking forward to competing again,” she says. Michelle trains five days a week powerlifting at Results Gym in Nelson and is coached by Jason Hylkema. “She works incredibly hard, there are not many girls as driven as her when it comes to lifting heavy weights, she is in a league of her own. Each training block she is consistently improving. If she continues progressing, she can achieve whatever she wants in powerlifting,” says Jason. Michelle will compete in Melbourne on her son’s 17th birthday and has promised to bring him home a medal. Michelle says her goal is to represent New Zealand at the Powerlifting World Champs one day.

don’t have that information. Why would we want to go onto a board that is in this situation? It would be crazy, I’m not interested in doing that,” says John. “I told him to send a full and frank proposal and I’ll take it to the district executive to discuss, but I haven’t seen that yet.” The Nelson Marlborough Falcons are a private team that play in the New Zealand Football-run ASB Youth League. They won the right to a youth league licence three years ago over Nelson Bays Football, which runs the game in Nelson on behalf of Christchurchbased Mainland Football, one of the country’s six federations. This year, the Falcons have also been left without a major sponsor and New Zealand Football had talks with Aldo in Auckland last Thursday to discuss the $20,000 entry fee which hadn’t been paid. Aldo says a new major sponsor has been signed though, which will be announced in “five weeks”. The regular season ends on December 21, eight weeks away. “We’re set to announce, in about five weeks’ time, our sponsor for the rest of the season and for next season, which

is fantastic,” says Aldo. “We’re just waiting for the new strips to arrive and then we’ll get their logo on it, and then we’ll be able to announce it.” He also said New Zealand Football were being “very patient” with the late entry fee and were “understanding”. He was bullish about the future of the Falcons, saying it was still his goal to have a men’s national league side, but admitted that he was resigning from his role as chairman at the end of the season. That would leave a two-man board. Cam Mitchell of New Zealand Football says he was happy with the discussions with Aldo last week and that they have agreed to a payment plan for the team. He says the governance of the team will be reviewed at the end of the season. “As it sits, the Falcons are meeting the obligations in terms of their licence and we think it’s positive that they’re looking at their governance structure.” On the pitch, the Falcons are unbeaten, playing fantastic football and Aldo says that’s a huge success story. “On the field it’s been unreal stuff this season. It highlights the depth of football and is a slap in the face for all those people who didn’t back the team, didn’t think they’d do well.”

The board behind the region’s national youth league football team appears to be in disarray, with just three board members left and the chairman saying he’ll resign at the end of the current season. Waimea Weekly understands that three board members of the Nelson Marlborough Falcons football team have resigned in the past month, leaving just chairman Aldo Miccio, his brother Francis and Blenheim-based Nigel Thompson. But Aldo doesn’t appear to be aware of the shrinking board, telling the Weekly last week that there are still five board members but two would step down once three representatives from Nelson Bays Football and Marlborough Football are appointed. But two of the people he named as currently on the board have confirmed they resigned weeks ago. Even worse, Nelson Bays Football chairman John Armstrong has rejected any proposal that would see him supplying board members to the Falcons, calling the board “in turmoil”. “Aldo sent an email last week asking for two board members from Nelson Bays Football ‘as soon as possible’. But he hasn’t disclosed any financial information or what their financial commitments are. We won’t commit to a board where we

Richmond rider wins Milk and Honey cycling race Richmond rider, Henry Jaine, enjoyed a profitable day winning the prizemoney and overall honours in the Milk and Honey cycle race in Golden Bay on Sunday. Henry edged out Hayden Squance in the sprint and won the King of the Mountain during the 26km road bike stage of the race from Takaka to the top of the Takaka Hill. The Waimea College student then held it together on the technical 28km mountainbike stage through the Rameka Track back to Takaka to finish in a fast 2 hours 36 minutes 35 seconds. “Hayden and I managed to get away before the sprint and I just got past him on the line,” Henry says. After crashing on the lower sections of the mountainbike stage two years ago, Henry admitted he was a little con-

Ed Kerley was second in 2hr 41min 52sec with Brent Miller third in 2hr 47min 34sec. Nelson’s Ingrid Richter dominated the women’s race winning the sprint and hill climb to finish in 3hr 8min 16sec. Warrick Spence and Brenda Clapp did the race the hard way completing both stages on one bike but still recorded fast times with Warrick finishing in 2hr 50min 25sec and Brenda recording 4hr 6min 36sec. Waimea College students, Dan Reid and Cameron Jones, won the team’s section in 2hr 43min 52sec. One hundred and fifty riders entered the event.
