of trucks driving through St Arnaud on SH63 has increased even more from 41 to 537 or 1203 per cent and that’s causing havoc on the roads. “Our guys are reporting dangerous incident on those roads every day,” Sollys Freight manager Ed Solly says. “Last Sunday, one of

our drivers said he had two near misses (with cars crossing the centre line) and he saw another three. “The head-ons are the biggest worry. Car drivers are getting impatient following trucks and try to overtake when they need to be patient.”

Ed says car drivers need to “chill out” when they are stuck behind traffic and try and “understand that drive from Christchurch to Nelson is going to take longer”. He says the alternative SH1 is inadequate for the increased

‘Head-ons biggest worry’ on State Highway 65 FROM PAGE 1 volumes of traffic and the only answer to the problem is for all drivers to “slow down and be patient.” Although the New Zealand Transport Agency is spending $60million on upgrading the alternative SH1 route, Mainfreight’s Nelson manager Nick Max says it’s too little, too late. He says sections of the highway are so narrow it’s impossible for drivers in large H-permitted trucks to negotiate a tight corner without crossing the centre line. “NZTA are working hard to repair and widen the road, but as soon as they fix one part another falls away,” Nick says. “I often hear our drivers saying how dangerous that road is and I take my hat off to the guys for driving it. “There are sections where it’s so

narrow and you get two trucks passing in opposite directions, their wing mirrors are just millimetres from hitting – it’s scary.” Tasman road policing team leader Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews agrees SH65 is “an on-going concern” and warns it’s only going to get worse as traffic volumes increase over the summer. Police have an increased presence on the highway and Grant says it’s not just drivers who are speeding or taking risks overtaking who are being stopped and fined. “We are also targeting drivers doing 70 or 80 kmh in a 100kmh zone because they hold people up and then those people take risks to get past and put themselves and others at risk. Everyone needs to be patient, drive to the conditions, and realise that the trip from Christchurch to Picton or Nelson is going to take about an hour longer.”

Sollys truck driver Dave Rutherford says everyone needs to be patient driving on SH65 so he can “get home in one piece and have a beer.” Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Grant says NZTA is doing a “fantastic job” of improving the safety of SH65 while trucking companies are working hard to educate their drivers about the hazards on the alternative SH1. He says rental car companies are also helping by taking a hard line on poor

driving on the highway. “We’ve stopped some rental car drivers and taken them to the nearest police station to get them off the road. In some cases, we’ve contacted the rental company and, if the driving is bad enough, they’ve cancelled the contract on

the spot.” However, Ed and Nick say it’s not just the impatient car drivers who are causing problems. Transport companies have been forced to take on relatively inexperienced drivers to cope with the increased demand following the closure of the rail link and Ed agrees that’s “compounded the problem.” Ed says there’s “no silver bullet” to the problem although he’s hoping that traffic volumes decline when SH1 is reopened on a limited basis on December 15. SH1 will only be reopened during daylight hours and some sections will still be under construction with unsealed surfaces, lane closures and stop-go traffic controls. NZTA says the estimated travel time to drive between Picton and Christchurch will be a minimum of five and half hours, compared to a minimum of six and half hours for alternate inland route.

Police warn car break-ins will increase this summer

Simon Bloomberg

Police are encouraging drivers to be more security conscious with the number of car breakins expected to peak over the summer months. Richmond police sergeant Greg Beer says dishonesty crimes are one of the biggest problems in Tasman and cars and their contents are always an easy target. However, Greg says most of car break-ins are opportunistic and can easily be prevented by taking commonsense security measures. “I’d estimate that 80 per cent of thefts from cars are opportunistic,” Greg says. “If a car is

unlocked and valuables are left inside then it’s an easy target and there’s always a dishonest element in our society who can’t help themselves. “If people keep their cars locked and remove their valuables, it removes the opportunity. There are people who will smash a window to get into a car but even those offenders won’t do that unless they see something worth stealing.” Although a random check of 74 cars in Richmond public car parks last week suggested the district’s drivers are already security conscious, with just two unlocked vehicles and four with valuables left on seats in-

side the cars, Greg says there’s no room for complacency. He says the number of car break-ins is always a bigger problem “in driveways and on streets outside homes at night” and, also increases over the summer months. “We get a lot of wallets stolen overnight from cars parked in driveways,” Greg says, “Just because the car is parked on your property doesn’t means it’s not going to be targeted.” Greg is also encouraging people to contact police when they see suspicious behaviour around cars. “Don’t be afraid to call us or even dial 111.”

Events popular at A&P Show Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Times have changed at the Nelson A & P Show with women venturing from the traditional baking competitions and equestrian events and muscling into the last bastions of manhood of woodchopping and strongman competitions. The Taylors Cars Strongman Challenge and woodchopping were two of the biggest attractions at the Golden Edge-sponsored show held at Richmond Park on

Nelson’s Ashleigh Radford, 18, competed in the woodchopping event. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Saturday and Sunday. And one of the things that helped make these events even more interesting than usual was the number of top female athletes lining up alongside the men. “I do it for fun,” defending Strongman champion, Louise Kelly of Nelson, says. “I helped run the event two years ago and when it opened up to women last year I thought it would be fun to have a go at it. “I’m not that big, I’m only 69kg, but it’s technique as well as strength, so I hold my own.” Although Louise couldn’t repeat her championship-winning feats of last year, she did take out the truck pull against her much bigger rivals. World recordbreaking weightlifter Kate Mitchell-Parker of Auckland won the women’s event while Conner Moeke of Palmerston North edged out Nelson’s Ben Smith in the men’s competition. Event promoter Luke Slotemaker says the standard of competition had improved massively this year with the athletes lifting and pulling thousands of kilograms in eight events over two days. He says athletes the calibre of Kate would win strongman competitions anywhere in the world, showing that the Nelson

The woodchopping also featured the fairer sex with Nelson’s Ashleigh Radford, 18, sharpening axes alongside Nelson’s world champion Adam Lowe and hardened Richmond veteran Ray Biggs. “I saw it at the A & P Show when I was younger and thought this is cool,” Ashleigh says. “I also wanted to do something that

wasn’t pony club.” And Ray, who has been woodchopping for 26 years, says that’s one of the appeals of the sport. “Anyone can do it. It’s handicapped, so you get 14 and 15-year olds chopping against world champions and someone in their 80s. There’s always great camaraderie too – that’s why I keep doing it.” The show enjoyed magnificent

weather over the weekend with secretary Annette Robinson saying they had bigger crowds than last year. “Saturday was well up on last year and we had a constant stream of people on Sunday, although it was not a big as Saturday because there were so many other events on,” Annette says. “There was a really friendly atmosphere and the weather was perfect – it was a wonderful show.”

Classic cars raise money for Hospice

jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz

For the third year in a row, local V8 enthusiasts have combined their passion for cars with an act of generosity, the result being the annual V8 Escape. Around 50 cars turned up on Saturday morning at Brightwater Motor Inn for the cruise, well up on the 25 cars that attended last year. “It’s growing every year as the word gets out that it’s a great cruise for a great cause,” says Ian Barker. The run took them through the Moutere and out to Tapawera, then to Quinney’s Bush for a picnic lunch before concluding the drive back at the Brightwater Motor Inn. Fellow organiser Ross Hurley, says “me and Ian, we’ve just got a passion for American classic cars and we got talking one day and thought, ‘we should organise a run with the proceeds going to a worthy cause’”. “We’ve run the event for three years in a row now. We know there’s an awful lot of classic cars in the Nelson area, so it’s also a good excuse for people to get them out.” The V8 Escape was successful in raising $1200 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice and received “an awful lot of positive feedback from people, thanking us for such an awesome day out,” says Ross. Staff at Quinney’s Bush were in charge of deciding the People’s Choice award, which went to Anita Parkins and her 1957 Cadillac de Ville. “I’ve only had this about six weeks, so this is its first outing,” says Anita. The run concluded with music from the Dixie Prix and the raffle draw which included many great prizes, generously donated by a number of local businesses.

Santa and his reindeer had to take a detour on their way from the South Pole to Richmond on Sunday, but that didn’t stop them enchanting thousands of people who lined the alternative route for the annual Richmond Pak ‘n Save Santa Parade. Santa’s was one of 30 floats with themes ranging from a Bethlehem Christmas to Star Wars and Disney fairy tales which meandered down Oxford St, into Cambridge, and briefly onto Queen St and McIndoe Pl before ending in Petrie-Harkness Carpark. Although the parade’s traditional route was out of bounds due to the Queen St upgrade, Richmond Unlimited’s events and marketing co-ordinator Charlotte Bidlake says the day was still a big success. “It’s hard to compare numbers with last year when we had about 9000 people because it went down a different route, but they looked about the same,” Charlotte says. “All the streets were lined and Sundial Square

was packed afterwards too – we had hundreds of people there enjoying the entertainment and they stayed around for ages.” Charlotte says the parade started in spectacular fashion when a dance flash mob performed for the crowd. Face painters, magicians and the Twisty Twinz kept the children entertained in Sundial Square after the parade. Grace Church’s Bethlehem Christmas theme was judged the best float, winning $500 worth of Pak ‘n Save vouchers. Glen James Jewellers’ hovercraft float with a blowup Santa Claus won $300 in Pak ‘n Save vouchers for second and Heslop Engineering’s gingerbread house and gingerbread men won $200 in vouchers for third. Inclusive Sport Trust and Life Education Trust’s floats received a commendation while the People’s Choice vote will be announced when it closes on Friday – votes can be made on the Love Richmond Facebook page @loverichmondnz The next big event is the Richmond Market Day on The Twisty Twinz walked tall in Sunday’s Richmond Pak ‘n Save Santa Parade. The Richmond Waimea RSA used their Christmas lunch event to recognise the long service given to the organisation by three outstanding members, Rick Williams, Terry Richardson and Noel Woolf. Rick was recognised for 20 years of service with a Gold Star, while Terry and Noel both received Merit Awards for 15 years of service. “We know the meaning of service because we’ve all done military service, but now we’re honouring these men for their service to our own members,” says Richmond Waimea RSA president Ross Norgate. “It’s been many a year since any-

one got a gold star within the Waimea RSA, it’s the highest form of recognition.” National president BJ Clark who attended the lunch, says “the RSA is a voluntary organisation, so the only way that we can acknowledge the amazing service and support our members give is through these presentations”. “The Merit is our first national award, and that’s normally at around seven to ten years of service. At 15 years, they receive the badge and the certificate. To get a Gold Star, they’ve not only got to have been involved at local level, but at national level as well.” Once a nomination has been made, it is reviewed by all

eight district presidents, two national vice-presidents and the national president, before being voted on. “So, these awards aren’t given out lightly,” says BJ. After 20 years of service, a highlight for Rick is administering the mobility scooter fleet. “It’s the look on the face of the person we’re giving it to, and the realisation that they’ve regained some independence in their life. I’m Richmond born and bred, the Richmond Waimea RSA farewelled me when I left to attend Sandhurst and it’s a great honour to have been able to put something back into the organisation,” says Rick.

Open day attracts new recruits Jessie Johnston Richmond Fire Brigade’s open day on Saturday offered locals an insight into what they do for the community, in the hope of finding some new recruits. “The last time we did a recruiting drive was three years ago and we didn’t do anything like this,” says Chief Fire Officer Craig Piner. Brigade member Alex Theobald was given the task of recruiting this year and decided they should host an open day, “and he’s done a great job,” says Craig. “We’ve had six or seven people who have expressed a good interest in wanting to join up, from all sorts of age groups.” The open day featured the brigade’s two trucks, hose activities and demonstrations, a motor vehicle accident extrication and a kitchen fire demonstration. Conrad Stephenson was among those keen to get more informa-

tion on becoming a member of the brigade, having just recently moved into the Richmond area. “I just thought it would be something interesting to do and something for the community,” says Conrad. “I had mentioned it and my partner’s father said there was an open day on, it was sort of like the stars aligned or something.” The next step for the newbies is to go along to the Richmond brigade’s training evenings, “see what we do during training and meet everybody, and they’ll do that for the next six or seven weeks, figuring out if it’s for them,” says Craig. “They’ll then start their training and could ride the trucks within a couple of months, they’ll be fully trained in about six months.” If anyone missed the open day but is keen to learn more about joining the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, phone 544 8998.

Bringing freedom at Christmas time Judene Edgar The word slavery most likely conjures up images of scenes from movies such as Roots, Django Unchained or 12 Years a Slave. However, it is estimated that there are more slaves today than in any other time in history. And nearly two-thirds of the world’s estimated 40 million slaves are in the Asia-Pacific region. Slavery exists today in many guises, such as forced labour in brick kilns, agriculture and the garment sector, child soldiers in India and Thailand, and child marriages, sex-trafficking and prostitution. It’s tough to imagine what life is like, thousands of miles from home, penniless, abused, and scared, and perhaps just as hard to imagine what you can do to help. This is the position that Beacon Hill Country Store owner Rebekah Bay found herself in. Despite feeling overwhelmed, she is doing what she can, raising money for anti-human trafficking organisation iBring Freedom, run through the Eden Ministry. iBring Freedom works in South East Asia with girls and women who have been trafficked for prostitution. “I was just deeply disturbed about the issue, it’s such a horrific thing, but I heard about Kalinda [Lichtwark] through a friend and met up with her and we just started from there,” says Rebekah.

Kalinda lives a life about as polar-opposite from her Richmond upbringing as you could imagine. Along with her husband Doug and three daughters, they now live in South East Asia where they work among the brothels, rescuing girls from prostitution and helping them set up new lives for themselves. “The work that Doug and Kalinda do is incredible. It’s real people, toughing it out in a hostile, harsh environment

and making a real difference.” Each year Rebekah runs the Vintage Christmas Market, raising funds to support their work. Over the past four years she has raised nearly $30,000. “This year we have over 70 stalls with a strong ‘shabby chic’ feel including beautiful boutique clothing, upcycled furniture, vintage collectables, artisan food and pottery, and Christmas-themed decorations,” she says. The market, which she de-

doing seems so small in comparison”. “They rely 100 per cent on donations to continue this valuable work, so any help makes a difference.” The Vintage Christmas Market is on Saturday, December 2 from 10am to 3pm at Beacon Hill Country Store, 205 Paton Rd, Hope. Starting career conversations

Mortgages Made Easy Let me help you obtain the best home loan for you

Georgia Shelling has always loved animals and wants to work with them, but she’s also aware that she needs to keep her options open. Taking part in the Waimea College year 10 ‘Workwatch’ programme last week, Georgia was delighted to get the opportunity to spend the day at Spring Grove Kennels and Cattery. “I pretty much knew I wanted to do something with animals, and our dogs have always come here when we go away, and I’ve volunteered here before,” says Georgia. Georgia was aware that she wouldn’t be spending the day playing with the animals, instead her day involved cleaning, exercising and feeding. “I don’t really mind cleaning the kennels because I’m still with the animals.” “Except for the stinky poo,” she adds. However, Georgia is still exploring her options - vet, zoologist, DOC ranger – or something else altogether. “It’s important to keep your options open because you don’t know what will happen,” she says. Waimea College careers adviser Lyn Guilliard agrees, which is why she says that

it’s important for students to start having career discussions at home. She says that Workwatch not only helps give students a taste of working life, but it also initiates some of those conversations at home. “We often only work within a framework of jobs that we already know about and know exist – we don’t know what we don’t know,” she says. “Careers is more of a journey or pathway, so why not let them dream a little and set the bar high.” Another key part of the conversation when deciding career paths, is that it’s not always a specific qualification that leads to opportunities, and that there are other important skills required for the workplace. Lyn says that ‘employability skills’ such as attitude, communication, self-management, team work and problem-solving are also critically important. “Workwatch provides exposure to ideas, rather than set jobs, as well as the skills needed in employment,” says Lyn. “For some students it opens their eyes and perspectives as to what’s out there, and for others it firms up their preferences – for or against.”

As you walk along the boardwalk to a fern-lined entranceway, you’ll notice a glass front door which throws light across polished concrete floors in the 2.7m studd living areas. The incredible kitchen has features to burn, including a pyrolytic oven and induction hob, stone benchtops with Jarrah trim and features that tie back to a floating wallcabinet in the entranceway. The splashback is a window that looks out to native bush on the 800m2 site, while a cornerless kitchen wall opens up to possibly the best Kwilla patio and portico in Richmond. A pizza oven enhances the indoor outdoor living space, where you can entertain or relax bathed in late evening sun.

A group of novice adventure racers are hoping to punch above their weight when they compete in the world’s largest expedition race early next year so they can help can raise funds for “one of the best youth charities in Nelson”. The Waimea Weekly’s Simon Bloomberg will be teamingup with Nelson’s Jane Orbell, his Arrowtown-based nephew Simon Bloomberg Jnr and former Nelsonian Ryan Thomas for the GODZone Adventure Race to be held in Fiordland from March 1-10. And the team is aiming to do more than just race in the 600km multisport event - they are also hoping to use the race as a platform to raise funds for Victory Boxing. “GODZone is going to be an epic challenge, especially this year because it’s in Fiordland and they’ve made it longer than usual,” Simon says. “But we wanted to try and do something extra and use the race as a platform to raise funds for the community. “Once we’d committed to that, we agreed on Victory Boxing as our team’s charity. We reckon Victory Boxing is one of the best youth-focused charities in Nelson and we saw parallels between racing in GODZone and the gym’s goals, so it was a good fit.” Victory Boxing runs classes for hundreds of children aged eight to 18 and teaches them to be determined and motivated and overcome adversity. It also encourages them to be more resilient, stay focused and maintain an optimistic

Although Simon says, they are “just a bunch of mid-packers”, the team has been training hard and will be giving it their best shot. “We’re not a champion team but we’ll be racing for a champion cause so we need plenty of support,” he says. Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton says the are delighted the adventure racers have offered to help the gym which relies extensively on donations, grants and fund-raising to keep operating. He is encouraging businesses and individual around Nelson and Tasman to support the team’s fund-raiser. “It’s great that they are prepared to take the time to raise funds for the kids,” Paul says. “GODZone is such a challenging event that we have a lot of respect for them and feel privileged they have asked us

if they can help. “The parallels are there too because the young kids at the gym face huge challenges every day. It’s all about taking one step at a time and keeping going forward.” Simon says they have already received good support from businesses around Tasman including Nelson Pine Industries, The Meadows, Upshift Communication, Printhouse Nelson and Waimea Weekly and are planning to approach others this month with all funds raised going directly to Victory Boxing. If you’d like to support Team Victory Boxing’s campaign to raise funds for Victory Boxing, go to the givealittle page Givealittle.co.nz/cause/ teamvictoryboxing. The Watson family name has been synonymous with the Richmond grocery industry since 1957 and it’s a history that is well worth celebrating as Fresh Choice Richmond is now being run by the third generation. Ivan Watson and his wife Lyalla left their fellow Cantabrians and relocated to Richmond where, for the next 18 years they ran their grocery business, Richmond Super Discount, on the corner of Queen and Cambridge Streets. Locals would call on them daily for their fresh bread, sliced cheese, fresh veges and all manner of other household supplies. By 1975, Ivan had taken a backseat and left the business in the capable hands of his son Ian, who shifted the shop down the road to 259 Queen St. ond.

Fresh Choice Richmond owners Gary and Lisa Watson are proud to continue the family business which was started by Gary’s Grandparents. Ivan and Lyalla Watson (inset) started running the Richmond Super Discount grocery store back in 1957. For a further 11 years the store continued its dedicated service to local customers, expanding its range of groceries and

goods to meet the demand of a growing Richmond population. In 1986, Ian made the final

move to the store’s current location in what had been named the Village Mall. In 2003, Ian’s sons Gary and Matt, the third

You may have caught Gary on current affairs show Seven Sharp, showcasing Fresh Choice Richmond’s healthy checkouts. Instead of chocolate bars, lollies and other tempting treats that can often find their way into your shopping cart when you’re waiting at the checkout, Gary has made a switch, putting salads, fruit, water and other healthy choices in their place, a move that has been celebrated by many in the community. For Gary and Lisa, supporting the community goes much further than simply stocking local goods, they’re always looking at ways to give back to groups, organisations and individuals who need a helping hand. “The Richmond community has looked after the Watson family for 60 years, which is why we always do our bit to support the community. Sponsoring teams, individuals and community projects is very important to Lisa and myself, which includes the Tasman Wheelers cycling team and lots of other sports clubs, local mountain biking, all the local schools and lots more. Basically, we try and help with whatever we can, where we can,” says Gary. To date, Fresh Choice Richmond has donated a total of $107,750 to various worthy causes. Simply visit the website for more information on how to apply. Whether it’s a school trip, community choir or sports group, all applications are considered. Gary, Lisa and the team are pretty proud to have reached 60 years, “especially in this day and age, a lot of businesses don’t last this long,” says Gary. They can’t thank local shoppers, the community or their suppliers enough for a long and happy history and promise to continue the Fresh Choice Richmond legacy long into the future. Zoe wins big at Sports Awards The Nelson Sports Awards celebrated its 50th edition on Saturday night and it marked the milestone by presenting more than 20 past winners with a commemorative pin. But the night belonged to just one past winner. Rower Zoe McBride, 22, won the Nelson Sportsperson of the Year award in 2015 and did so again this year after completing a world championship double in the light-weight single sculls. The Nelson Rowing Club member says picking up the award was a huge thrill. “It’s very exciting, I’m very honoured.” Earlier this year Zoe became only the second woman to win both the premier lightweight and premier open titles at the New Zealand Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha. The only other woman to do it was Philippa Baker-Hogan in 1987-88. At this year’s World Rowing Championships, Zoe moved from the single scull to the light-weight double sculls with partner Jackie Kiddle,

ends took to the stage to collect their commemorative pins. Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir says it was great to be able to honour those athletes. “It was an amazing collection of sporting legends and I think when you consider what this community produces it really does make you proud to live here.” Other winners were Tasman Makos (team of the year), Greg Lautenslager (coach of Zoe McBride won Sportswoman and Sportsperson of the the year), Wayne Leighton Year at the Nelson Sports Awards on Saturday night. Shaane had earlier starred for the New Zealand team at the UCI junior track world championships in Italy where she finished sixth in the keirin and reached the quarterfinals of the sprint. Shaane was unable to attend Saturday night’s awards because she was still travelling back from Cambridge but her grandmother Christine Van Hoppe, who accepted the award on her behalf, says the world junior

She works really hard and she doesn’t even have a proper track to train on. “She just has a passion and she loves it. She trains three times a day and she has school as well.”

The Outdoor Store may look like the new kid on the block but it’s actually an extension of well-established Brightwater business, The Loggers Shop. The store was established 18 years ago and initially aimed its services towards loggers in the area, meet-

The premises it operated out of was also much smaller compared to the spacious store it now occupies. Owners Dale and Christine Ewers, along with their team, have all worked hard to grow The Loggers Shop into the business it is today, and as it’s developed, a greater range of products have made their way onto the shelves. The business also encompasses a number of workshop services

including full service and repairs of your outdoor equipment, engineering, chain sharpening and wire rope. “We’ve been stocking a bit of outdoor gear in The Loggers Shop for quite a while now, and we thought it was time to get more serious about it,” says The Loggers Shop manager Tom Simpson. “Being in the Brightwater and Wakefield area, there’s an awesome community that we serve who are passionate about the outdoors, into fishing, hunting and hiking, and we want to be able to support our local customers with their hobbies.” So, while The Loggers Shop stocks a range of hardware and safety products, The Outdoor Store will be focused on outdoor adventure and leisure goods. “The Loggers Shop started out by strictly stocking logging equipment, however, over the years we’ve added in more leisure products for our customers, because most of the people who come in

for items from The Loggers Shop are also keen hunters and fishermen, so it’s just more convenient for them,” says Tom. “The Outdoor Store has seen us increase a lot of our ranges, as well as introduce new product lines. We’ll be stocking more boots and clothing while new lines to the store include fishing gear, bait and ice, all sorts of packs, camping gear, an awesome range of Fenix LED torches, Victorinox knives, Primus gas cookers, Dirty Dog sunglasses and more.” The Outdoor Store will even be stocking a range of Makita 18/36v Lithium outdoor power equipment, “which is a bit different for us, but we feel it complements our vision of being a comprehensive outdoor store, and of course there’s our Oleo-Mac petrol outdoor power equipment,” says Tom. “Swazi clothing is another big draw card for The Outdoor Store, because it’s a top-quality product and there are very few people who sell it around here.”

GRAND OPENING 9AM-3PM SAT 2 DECEMBER Ellis St Brightwater (next to HQ Cafe)

Instead of making the trip all the way into Nelson to find quality outdoor gear, The Outdoor Store is a quick and easy option and the team promises to stock the brands that people know and trust. Whether you’re heading out in the bush, out on the water or enjoying some of the hiking opportunities around the country, the right gear is essential for a successful and safe trip. The Outdoor Store is proud to be supplying customers with some of the best products available, however, if you want to talk to the real experts behind these names, come along to The Outdoor Store’s grand opening and meet with some of the brand representatives. “It will be a great way for outdoor enthusiasts to learn more about the gear they use, or learn about gear they are thinking of purchasing,” says Tom. “The open day will be attended by representatives from Swazi, Oregon, Gri Sport, Oleo-Mac, Styx Mill, Crispi, Andrews and more, plus, we’ll have awesome opening day-only deals for people to take advantage of.” There will be plenty to keep the kids entertained too with Flossie the Balloon Lady on hand creating balloon masterpieces, as well as face painting. Have a go at a game of Gumboot Pong, enjoy a free sausage sizzle and maybe grab one of several spot prizes. There will be heaps more on offer on the day, including The Rock radio station which will be joining in the celebrations and doing a live cross from the store. No matter what kind of outdoor activity you’re into, there’s one place you can rely on for quality equipment that won’t let you down. Come along to The Outdoor Store’s grand opening day on Saturday, December 2, from 9am until 3pm, or pop in and see them during normal business hours and talk to the team about their range. You’ll find them at 4/38 Ellis Street, Brightwater, next to HQ Café. If you’re after any of the products or services offered by The Loggers Shop, you’ll find them in the exact same place, or phone the team on 03 542 4076.

Micayla on the fast track Simon Bloomberg Athletics Richmond sprinter Micayla Whiti will be making her international debut at the young age of 11 when she lines up at the Pacific Schools Games in Adelaide, starting this weekend. Micayla was named in the New Zealand track and field team for the games earlier this year after winning the 100m and 200m sprint double at both the

North and South Island Colgate Games. Although Micayla recorded a 13.94sec personal best for the 100m at the North Island Colgate Games in January this year, her coach Dennis Kale says it’s difficult know how she’ll perform in Adelaide. “She’s prepared well for it but it’s early in the season so it’s hard to tell how she’ll go.” Dennis, who has been coaching Micayla for two years, says the Athletics Richmond run-

ner always had plenty of natural speed and they have been focusing on improving her technique. “There are lots of runners out there with natural speed but they also need a good technique to run really fast.” Micayla completed her preparation by winning the 100m and 200m in her age group at the Tasman Children’s Centre inter-club meeting at Saxton Field on Sunday.

I’m sure other fisherman’s wives can relate to the “The Cranky Fisherman.” Due to bad weather, work commitments kid’s sport’s or whatever the reason he can’t get out on the water, the Cranky Fisherman comes to visit. Driving onto town, following all the boats heading out another great day chasing snapper and he is flipping them the finger, or trying to have a nice lunch at the Slip Inn Havelock on the way back from a friend’s 50th, he is sitting there muttering under his breath. To make matters worse, one of his dreams is to see orca in their natural habitat. Yes, the orca arrived in Nelson last Saturday but, where were we? In Blenheim… More cursing and muttering. We cut our visit short and came home early on Sunday and

head out looking for orca. Two tired, grumpy kids, one starting to feel seasick, wind, rough seas on no blimey orca to be seen, we head back home after only an hour. Yep, one cranky fisherman. According to Facebook, other Dawnbreaker members are catching plenty. Snapper, gurnard and more, so we know they’re out there. But alas, they are proving very elusive to us. The last three outings - absolutely nothing. Nothing but barracuda and tangled lines. Yep, cranky fisherman again. So please Fishing God, please give a girl a break. Send the nice weather and the snapper our way. Happy fisherman, happy wife. All that said, would rather be out in our wonderful bay catching nothing than not being out there at all. Tight lines.

Take care, Mark

Tasman Fiji Rugby Tour 2018 While putting points on the scoreboard is certainly the aim of the game, South Pacific Sports Tours is also about new sporting experiences, which is why the Tasman Mixed U13U14 rugby team will be heading to Fiji next year. “I organise sports trips to anywhere in the South Pacific, kids put their names forward and we form a team,” says South Pacific Sports Tours’ owner, Ian Biggs. “There’s no criteria they need to meet regarding skill level, whoever wants to go is able to.” The team was formed in Janu-

ary this year and will be heading over to Fiji in June 2018, made up of students from around the Tasman region. They’ll be getting together closer to their departure date to get a few practices under their belt, although the main aim of the trip is to interact with the local people, learn about their culture and enjoy some friendly competition on the field. “It could be the only opportunity they get to play sport overseas and the other main thing we all do is take a 23kg bag full of donations for them, be it sports

equipment, educational equipment or hygiene items,” says Ian. “They host us, spend time with us and provide entertainment for us, so this is just our way of thanking them for their hospitality.” The group will arrive on a Monday and enjoy a couple of activities in the evening, play their first match on Tuesday, head out for an island trip by boat on Wednesday, play their second match on Thursday, followed by activities that evening, and then things come to an end on Friday when they head

home. “On previous trips the team has gone out to the village schools, that don’t have as many resources as others, and have interacted with students in the class room, as well as with the whole school out on the grounds, they all get on really well,” says Ian. Fundraising is ongoing for the Tasman Mixed U13-U14 team, with their travel package including all trip expenses such as transport, activities, food and accommodation. “The team is always on the lookout for sponsors, so if anyone is interested

in supporting them, they are welcome to contact me on 027 204 1274 or bigszs@xtra. co.nz, or people can keep an eye out for car washes, quiz nights, raffles etc. that will be happening around the place up until they leave next year,” says Ian.
