A review to make one of the busiest roads in the region safer is well underway. The New Zealand Transport Agency is currently conducting a review of speed limits on State Highway 6, between Wakefield and Hope. The road is one of the busiest in the region. Around 11,500 vehicles travel between Hope and Brightwater each day, while a further 8,500 continue to Wakefield. Concerns over road safety on SH6 are not new. Between 2009 and 2018, three people died and 18 were seriously injured in crashes along this stretch of road. A total of 61 crashes were registered on SH6, between Richmond and Wakefield, in the last five years. According to NZTA, most crashes are caused by a number of different factors, but speed is most likely to determine whether anyone is killed, injured or walks away unharmed.
