Dual use of motels causing concern Jenny Nicholson Reporter

Moteliers in the Tasman region who are providing emergency housing are not keen to be named.

They are worried they would lose business if it were known they provide emergency housing. One went as far as to threaten to get lawyers involved if his name was printed. “It would decimate my client base if people knew I took WINZ cli-

ents,” says one motelier. However, they were willing to comment if theirs and their business names were not published. One motelier said that Ministry of Social Development (MSD) clients receiving emergency accommodation in his motel would

have to leave over Christmas due to the seasonal increase in tourists. When asked where these clients would find accommodation he named a motel, but when contacted the manager at the named motel said he was unaware of that

plan. Another motelier said his MSD clients would stay in the motels over Christmas. On a recent trip to Napier and Hastings, Waimea Weekly’s

The Pak’n’Save Santa Parade hit Richmond on Sunday, attracting close to 10,000 spectators who lined Queen Street to watch the procession make its way along the route. Over 30 floats took part to celebrate the start of the festive season, with the Celtic Pipe Band leading the way. Richmond Unlimited events and marketing manager, Charlotte Bidlake, says: “It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever seen at the parade and the floats were such a high standard. “I think a lot of kids maybe had things cancelled this year, which is why the parade was so busy as parents made the extra effort to come and support us.”

Winning floats took home Pak’n’Save vouchers, with the Zumba Richmond team in first place, followed by runners-up Lift and Shift Speedway Juniors and Nelson Motorcycle Club in third place. “It was so hard to choose a winner as everyone had done such a great job,” says Charlotte. “It was the first time a retirement village had taken part, and then NMIT’s float was really creative… I can’t wait to see who wins the People’s Choice Award.” Voting for the People’s Choice Award closes this Friday and you can vote for your favourite float at facebook.com/love richmondnz. The float photos are up, so click your fave and you could win $100 yourself!
