Dual use of motels causing concern Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Moteliers in the Tasman region who are providing emergency housing are not keen to be named.

They are worried they would lose business if it were known they provide emergency housing. One went as far as to threaten to get lawyers involved if his name was printed. “It would decimate my client base if people knew I took WINZ cli-

ents,” says one motelier. However, they were willing to comment if theirs and their business names were not published. One motelier said that Ministry of Social Development (MSD) clients receiving emergency accommodation in his motel would

have to leave over Christmas due to the seasonal increase in tourists. When asked where these clients would find accommodation he named a motel, but when contacted the manager at the named motel said he was unaware of that

plan. Another motelier said his MSD clients would stay in the motels over Christmas. On a recent trip to Napier and Hastings, Waimea Weekly’s

The Pak’n’Save Santa Parade hit Richmond on Sunday, attracting close to 10,000 spectators who lined Queen Street to watch the procession make its way along the route. Over 30 floats took part to celebrate the start of the festive season, with the Celtic Pipe Band leading the way. Richmond Unlimited events and marketing manager, Charlotte Bidlake, says: “It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever seen at the parade and the floats were such a high standard. “I think a lot of kids maybe had things cancelled this year, which is why the parade was so busy as parents made the extra effort to come and support us.”

Winning floats took home Pak’n’Save vouchers, with the Zumba Richmond team in first place, followed by runners-up Lift and Shift Speedway Juniors and Nelson Motorcycle Club in third place. “It was so hard to choose a winner as everyone had done such a great job,” says Charlotte. “It was the first time a retirement village had taken part, and then NMIT’s float was really creative… I can’t wait to see who wins the People’s Choice Award.” Voting for the People’s Choice Award closes this Friday and you can vote for your favourite float at facebook.com/love richmondnz. The float photos are up, so click your fave and you could win $100 yourself!

I always put my tree up on the 1st December and leave it up longer than most people as I like the fibre optic lights!

I’m starting a new tradition this year of a Christmas Eve box for my kids filled with goodies the night before.

Just before Christmas dinner, we light a candle to remember absent friends and family and honour their memory.

We always have mac ’n’ cheese for dinner on Christmas Eve and croissants for breakfast on Christmas morning.

editor sat on the side of the road and called around twenty motels. He was told over and over that they no longer deal with the public. He says that it’s a warning to Tasman. If this happened here it would have a negative impact on wineries, restaurants, water taxies and the wider tourism industry. Moteliers in the Nelson Tasman region said they were not at capacity except over the Christmas New-Year period. One motelier said the emergency housing tenants are good tenants 90 per cent of the time, but if word gets out they are there, corporate clients will no longer book with him. Another motelier agreed that tenants are usually good, but

said their associates were the problem. “The biggest problem to the women and to the motel are the ex’s,” he said. There have been instances of rooms being trashed. Emergency accommodation is short-term accommodation for people unable to access other accommodation. The MSD approved 119 emergency housing special needs grants (EHNSG) in the Tasman region in the last quarter, and 455 in the Nelson region. MSD’s senior media advisor, Jerome Cvitanovich, said this accommodation is usually in motels. When asked about the fee paid for emergency housing, a motelier said they do charge more for MSD customers than for tourists. “This is to build in the cost of

repairs for damage and wear and tear of a family living in the motel,” he said. Karen Hocking, General Manager of Housing for MSD, said they were not aware of a surcharge for wear and tear. “We believe this should be a normal part of the operating costs of accommodation providers,” said Karen. A motelier also said he didn’t want his motel named as he didn’t want to be blacklisted by WINZ for his comments. Alasdair Dunwoodie, manager of Parkside Motels, said that they are currently choosing not to accept emergency housing clients. He said that families living at a motel doesn’t go with the image corporate clients are looking for. “Once you do have families you can’t go back, as the motel gets run down,” said Alasdair.

Rachel Boyak, MP for Nelson, said motels are not ideal for long-term stays for families and whanau, but do form part of the response to supporting families while more housing is bought on board. “The housing needs of vulnerable families must always have top priority,” said Rachel. She said motel owners make decisions about entering these arrangements based on their own commercial needs and interests. Being asked to leave for the Christmas period shows there is little security in the week by week system of staying at a motel. It may be better than current alternatives, but it is a temporary solution to one problem and has potential to cause another problem for a region like Tasman where tourism is key.

Hope subdivision to be fast tracked Jacqui Rawson A subdivision on Main Road Hope has been lined up as part of the Government’s fast-track consenting programme. The Vines subdivision proposal, if given the go ahead, is to provide 48 small sections with small houses, to help with affordable housing in the district. “On balance I support this proposal because we’re desperate for cheaper housing, but personally I would have

preferred we use less productive land first,” says Richmond councillor Kit Maling. The area had been identified as part of the TDC’s Future Development Strategy but the government’s Fast-Track application will leap-frog the development. The council accepts it as it brings forward what was planned, even though the site occupies land currently zoned Rural 1 productive land. There are other areas earmarked by TDC which are

on less productive land which could have been used. “There are also some significant drainage issues at the Vines site that need to be resolved as part of the development,” says Kit. “Speeding up the consenting process means that these projects have the potential to sooner deliver much needed jobs and promote regional economic growth,” says Environment Minister, David Parker. A decision on the application will be made in early 2021.

Hope to Wakefield speed reduction deadline looms Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The formal consultation process over the proposed speed reductions on SH6 between Hope and Wakefield draws to a close on 18 December, so if you haven’t yet had your say and you’d like to, now’s the time to do it. The New Zealand Transport Agency is proposing that the speed limits on that 10km stretch of road are lowered. It’s suggested two parts of that highway drop from 100km to 80km, while two other sections face a reduction from 70km to 60km. The 80km section, which runs past the Brightwater intersection, will remain unchanged. NZTA regional relationships director, Jim Harland, says, “Some of the crashes on this road are at intersections. People have told us it’s difficult to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles, which means some drivers make risky decisions, like pulling out when it is not safe. “We know more development is planned and the population will grow, making this road even busier. This proposal is an attempt to make sure the speed limits are safe and appropriate.”

The proposed speed limit reductions. Image: Supplied. Each day, around 11,500 vehicles travel between Hope and Brightwater, and 8,500 travel between Brightwater and Wakefield. In the last decade, from 2009 to 2018, there were 98 crashes on the highway between Hope and Wakefield, where three people were killed and 18 people were seriously injured. “The speed of a crash is what determines whether someone walks away or is carried away,” Jim says. There is mixed feedback in the community with some blasting

the proposal saying reductions won’t stop some drivers speeding and may just add to congestion. “The average speed along those straights seems about 80km or less in peak hours anyway,” says Wakefield resident Carolyn Luxford. “So, I guess when they officially drop to 80kph it will become more like 60km – everyone using those roads better leave way earlier!” Others welcome the proposal, although feel the Brightwater intersection has been overlooked as part of the shake-up. Bright-

water resident Kirsty Jones says, “I think dropping to 80km from Hope to Brightwater is fine as it’s mainly residential, but what I don’t understand is why one of the most dangerous places at the River Terrace/Ellis Street intersection is staying the same.” Many locals have asked for the safety surrounding the Brightwater intersection be reconsidered as part of the proposal on their feedback forms. With suggestions for a roundabout or traffic lights as an alternative if the speed limit is to

stay at 80km. “It’s such a high traffic flow area in all directions,” Kirsty says. “And I have personally witnessed a couple of accidents and many, many near misses.” This speed review is aligned to New Zealand’s Road Safety Strategy, Road to Zero 20202030, which has been set up to ensure safety improvements on high-risk intersections and roads across the country. The formal submissions will be considered before NZTA make any final decisions. However, even if the public are against the reductions, the decision may still go ahead. “The consultation for proposed speed limit changes is not a vote,” says Jim. “It is about seeking valuable local and community input so that we can consider wider factors and context in our decision. All submissions received during the consultation period will be analysed and considered before a final decision is made, and issues raised during the consultation may result in changes to what had been initially proposed.” The public can make a submission on the Wakefield-Hope proposed changes by calling 0800 444 449 to have a form sent out.

It’s all temporary Jenny Nicholson The building of a Countdown supermarket on the corner of Champion Road and Salisbury Road will mean temporary changes to traffic flow at the roundabout central to these roads. “We have looked at ways to manage traffic during construction,” says Tasman District Council’s transportation manager, Jamie McPherson. Work will start in January, and they hope to have it completed

in June/July 2021. One short-term change will be no right turn at the Champion Road roundabout for those coming from Nelson. To ensure ease of access to the Aquatic Centre, Raeward Fresh and surrounding businesses, a temporary one-way road is being built to allow traffic to turn left into the area from the deviation. Aquatic Centre marketing manager, Crystal Gaiger, says the process has been positive as there was a lot of consultation

with them and there will still be access for their customers. Before Christmas, work will also be done on the water mains in this area. Because there is a higher risk of water contamination while mains are worked on, water will temporarily be treated with chlorine. The ‘no right turn’ access off the deviation, and water chlorination are all temporary measures while work is being carried out on the water mains and roads.

After being stymied by Covid-19, Dancing for a Cause is strutting its stuff once more – all in an effort to raise money for Nelson Tasman Hospice. The popular event will take place on May 1 next year and will have

a new MC - Clinton Randell from the Edge, who was also a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. “The aim is to put on a spectacular show every two years and, most importantly, to raise needed funds for amazing local charities and organisations,” says organiser Emma Silke-French. The event was just eight weeks out when Covid-19 halted plans

for the event. “We were all but ready to put it on. Everyone was all excited and now it’s just about trying to build that excitement back up.” Emma says almost all the people who bought tables have kept them, along with sponsors who have stuck with the event. “We want to make the event bigger and better. Rather than look-

ing at the negative side we are looking at it like having an extra year to organise it all.” It also features a new contestant in the form of Nelson Magazine editor Sarah Board, who will join eight other local personalities partnered each with a trained ballroom dancer. They will perform a ballroom dance in front of a panel of judges in order to be

declared the Nelson Dancing for a Cause winner. Dancing for a Cause held its first event in May 2018 to a sold-out crowd at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre, raising $111,000 for Nelson Tasman Hospice. Tables have all sold out but there are still tickets available which can be purchased from Eventfinda.

Nelson Lakes Field Day Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

One of the highlights of the year hits Nelson Lakes this weekend at the Lake Rotoiti Field Day. The annual fete sees children from years 1-8 (both from the school and also in the community) take part in a series of competitions designed for creativity and fun. There are animal classes where the kids can compete in a ‘pets got talent’ and a ‘fancy-dressed pet’ show. And other categories, such as arts and crafts, photography and cooking, where the children will have prepared their entries before the day for them to be judged. There’s a huge, shared BBQ lunch, so bring your meat and salads,

along with plates and cutlery to make the most of it. Other activities will be an East v West tug-of -war competition, and if it’s warm enough, the pool will be open for a swim. In the afternoon, Santa will pay a special visit before afternoon tea and a raffle draw. If your child wants to be included but doesn’t attend Lake Rotoiti School, call Janine on 52 11003 and she will make sure you have everything you need. If you have preschool-aged children and think you might come along to Field Day, please get in touch so the organisers can make sure your child is not left out of the Santa presents. The Field Day takes place at Lake Rotoiti School on Saturday 5 December at 9.30 am.

The Snowden’s Bush Trust, which is aiming to buy the frontage of the Snowden’s Bush Reserve from the Anglican Diocese, are almost on target for the $350,000 required to purchase the land. They have recently been granted funding of $50,000 from the Stout Trust which brings them up to $302k.“We’ve only $48,000 left to find so we’re on the home straight,

says Snowden’s Bush Trust chairman, Jerry Cameron. “Reaching the $300k mark is quite a milestone and we are definitely on the final leg of the fundraising journey. Every little bit now will help get us over the line,” he says. The Trust aims to save the land from being converted into housing and preserve it for the enjoyment of the community. Fans welcome champion Mako home Jonty Dine and Peter Jones Tasman are back-to-back Mitre 10 Cup premiership champions after edging out Auckland in a thriller at Eden Park on Saturday night. The Mako won a ferocious, stop-start contest 13-12, having to defend for all they were worth in the final stages as the home side threw everything into attack. Co-head coach Andrew Goodman put Saturday’s win down to “a lot of hard work and a lot of belief ”. “Not many people were expecting that result, but we just chipped away in the background and knew we had a performance in us that could win us back-to-back titles.” When asked to compare last year’s triumph with Saturday’s effort, Goodman noted, “it was pure happiness to win it the first time, that will hold a very spe-

Skipper David Havili was first through the gates with the Mitre 10 Cup in hand. “I still can’t believe we have done it, it’s still a bit surreal, to bring it home to our franchise and our wee city is pretty special.” It was Havili who would ultimately seal the victory with a penalty and turnover in the final minute. Talent showcase Jenny Nicholson

Talented students from Waimea Intermediate performed for local primary schools last week. 120 students sang, danced and performed in kapa haka in preparation for their showcase for the community on Thursday night. Earlier this year they were the

regional winners of Showquest Onscreen 2020. The theme was ‘emotions’ and their student-led choreography was captured by drone footage. They also won the ‘magic moment’ section when they formed a smiley face. There were many ‘magic moments’ last week from both individual performers and groups.

It’s not only words of praise being delivered to the Chorus box artist on Salisbury Road recently. River Day has been painting the metal cabinet that houses Chorus’ mini telephone exchange, with motorists and pedestrians letting him know of their appreciation for his work. “People have been telling me what a great job I’m doing while they’ve been stopped at

the red lights,” says River. “Some people gave me great feedback, carried on with their trip to the supermarket and came back with an icecream for me,’ he says. River, 17-years-old, who until now has been an indoors artist has been thrust into the public’s eye with this project. The comments have all been encouraging, says River. Just over 6 weeks ago, River started work on the cabinet after being chosen by the Tasman District Council to be part of the Broadband Internet Company, Chorus’ arts

programme. The weather has had a big impact on getting the job completed. The unseasonal amount of rain, but also the scorching sun rapidly drying out his paint, has meant River has had narrow windows of opportunity to make the artwork happen. The beautified Chorus box now provides a snapshot of nature - but there have been other results. People are contacting River after seeing his work, with requests to paint murals for them on the sides of businesses and garages.

Offer valid until 18th December 2020. While stocks last.

A man who did well – Part 2 Dianne Scott As well as owning the latest in farm machinery, William was also keen on having the best livestock. He was a breeder of imported livestock and horses and raced them at the Nelson Turf Club’s race meetings. He was a shareholder and member of the first committee of the Richmond Cattle Fair Association, its first secretary in 1851, and director for a time. He was also a member and steward of the Nelson Agricultural and Horticultural Society and an exhibitor at their shows. He cultivated his land using the most efficient methods and in 1853 was reported in the Examiner as having made an important advancement in farming, importing a three horse-drawn reaping machine, capable of cutting two acres in one hour. One of his most important services was to the Richmond Education School Committee to which he was elected 9 June, 1856. He served as its first secretary and often also as chairman. Acting as secretary in 1856,

he advertised for a schoolmaster at £100 per annum and schoolmistresses at £40 per annum. He continued in this role almost continuously until 1886 when he no longer sought re-election at the age of 74 years. He was involved in establishing the Richmond Mechanics Association. As a cabin passenger, William had brought with him a considerable number of books, some of which were donated to the institute. In February 1863, William became the member for Waimea East on the Nelson Provincial Council, serving until September 1865. He also chaired the inaugural meeting of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade which was formed 19 August, 1871. Isabella died 31st January 1882, at Richmond – aged 58, and William at Hope 13th September 1890 - aged 78. They are buried in the family plot in the pioneer section of the Richmond Cemetery. William’s obituary in the Nelson Evening Mail described him as an “active, vigorous, kind and generous

William Harkness Scotsman who took an intelligent interest in politics.” Respected by his fellow citizens, he had become a man of some power and influence. The Harkness Car Park is named after him. Three of William’s sons became professional men with careers in education. Eldest son, Joseph George, was headmaster of Richmond Boys’ School, a member of the Richmond School Committee, the Nelson Educa-

tion Board, a Waimea County Councillor, chairman of the Richmond Town Board, and Minister of Parliament for Nelson between 1889 and 1893. Third son, James Hamilton, was a master at Nelson College, headmaster of the Bishop’s School in Nelson, headmaster of both Reefton and Westport District High Schools, president of the NZEI, a Justice of the Peace, Freemason, lay reader in the Anglican church, and mayor of Westport from 1927-33. William’s fourth son, George Alexander, also taught at Nelson College. He became headmaster of the Bridge Street School and the Central Boys’ School. In 1893 he was an Assistant Inspector of the Nelson Education Board, becoming a Senior Inspector the following year. He retained the position until his retirement in 1921. Youngest son John Tinline (Jack) Harkness was the only son who broke with the education mould. He became an accountant, a banker, an auditor, and a cricket and rugby player at provincial level.

d l e fi e k a W n o s u c o F Interactive history alive at Willowbank Heritage Village Jacqui Rawson Willowbank Heritage Village’s open day is on again this coming Sunday, 6th December. The Village’s open days provide a unique chance for families to be interactive in a historical setting. Everyone is able to get dressed up in traditional dress, make a landline telephone call between buildings or sit and have scones with jam and cream in the converted church. “We wanted it to be as interactive as possible,” says founderChristie Grieder. There’s a new ‘Secret Garden” for everyone to explore as well as a shooting range. And the Edwardian school which provides lessons for all ages, takes place at 11 am and 1 & 2 pm, but be on your best behaviour as the teacher runs her classroom with the strictness befitting the Edwardian time. There’s a 100-year-old working coffee machine and homemade cakes to buy. You can also help yourself to tea and coffee or bring along your picnic to eat

A Star Party Jacqui Rawson

Medea Grieder-George making popcorn the old-fashioned way. on the grounds. There is no charge to visit the village because Christie doesn’t want money to be the thing that limits people experiencing history. She wants as many people as possible to experience how life was, to understand where we came from. Each building in the village, such as the grocery store, is filled with all of the tools related to that business in a past time. This open day will also include a Christmas “Barter and Sell” car boot market.

Dark Skies are holding another family event at the Wai-iti Dark Sky Park, Wai-iti Recreation Reserve. It’s an amazing way to look at the night sky when it’s not effected by the unnatural light such as streetlights, businesses, and homes. The Wai-iti Recreation Reserve is 4.4km south of Wakefield and the event kicks off after dark around 8:30-9 pm and runs until 11:00pm, don’t forget to bring a torch. If it rains the event will be postponement until Sunday 6th of December. Rsvp’ing for this event is required and you can do so at; Darkskies.nz by Tuesday 3rd December¸ numbers are limited. The event is organised by The Top of the South Dark Sky Committee and Nelson Astronomy society.

Enjoy a break this summer with family and friends in this beautiful part of our country. Thank you for your support this year, and remember, I’m here to help...

WEDNESDAY 2 December 2020

Just a thought... Rev. Martin Sungchel Oh Nelson Tasman Methodist Parish The scripture says “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. About one and a half years ago, the Richmond Church of the Nelson Tasman Methodist Parish started serving the homeless a hot drink and some food every Wednesday morning. Our initial plan was to only try it for the winter season, however we have continued to keep it going. Our plans then expanded even further and have provided a shower facility in the Church building for people to utilise. This way of serving others involves utilising our finances for others, giving up our time and even giving up some of our Church space. But in turn, we receive unex-

pected benefits from this time of serving the homeless. Every Wednesday, two or three volunteers come along to spend

time together sharing stories and listening to each other. Sometimes, the homeless do not end up attending so it just leaves the volunteers to themselves. But this then gives us time for extra fellowship together and our friendships

Back row: Kay Nicholls, Angela Dixon. Front Row: Dawn Bastin, Julie Jermyn and Judith Hutchings. They have met each week for ten years and make about 15 garments a week to give away. That’s thousands of blankets, cardigans, slippers and hats for babies and children of our district. There are often about sixteen women knitting each week and they love teaching others to knit, too. have grown. So from this experience, I strongly believe in the phrase “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. To this day, I remember a moment when I encountered one of the homeless in our Wesley Church garden. I was familiar with who he was as I had seen him camping there. He approached me as I was coming out of Church from a meeting. Then to my surprise, he pulled out a 10 dollar note from his pocket. He then tried to donate this money to me. I thought perhaps he was giving this away as a gesture of thanks for our Wednesday morning fellowship. He then asks if I could take the money to buy a gift for one of the volunteers as it was their birthday soon. Isn’t it amazing how life can surprise you in the most unexpected ways?

Podiums galore for Nelson speedway drivers Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway roared into action with the penultimate round of the Hydralink “War of the Wings” sprint car series, Covid-19 had stopped the scheduled round in March and the series has been continued into this season. The time trials went the way of local Connor Rangi. Making a return after a season of car issues last year, he was 0.3 of a second off the lap record he set at practice in October. The opening heat was not a good one for series leader Jamie Duff. He was chasing race leader Rangi when his engine let go and his night was over, Rangi went on to claim the win in heat one. The track was in perfect condition, with cars able use all the

racing surface. Unfortunately, 23c Jacob Brownlee flirted out wide once too often and ended his night in the opening heat with brake failure after a wee wall ride. Alicia Hill had suffered broken rockers and fuel issues over the past several weeks, but everything came right on the night. Her mojo was back and the car was flying. Southerner Sam O’Callaghan was racing Kevin Freeman’s 75n sprint car, and it just got better as the night went on. Brett Sullivan was back racing in New Zealand after several seasons competing in Australia until Covid put paid to that option. The feature saw Rangi off pole with O’Callaghan on the outside front, Hill was on Grid 6. An early caution flag came after Canterbury’s Ray Baughan’s bad Nelson luck continued, rolling in turn two. Sullivan suffered a flat rear

The 75n car of “Slammin” Sam O’Callaghan was victorious in the feature race at the Hydralink “War of the Wings” sprint car series. Photo: Rebecca Maling. tyre and retired as well, but O’Callaghan took off from the restart, even another caution with seven laps to go didn’t faze him, he powered to a comprehensive win.

Slick passing from Hill had her in a solid battle with Rangi over the majority of the final half of the race but she held her nerve, finishing second across the line with Rangi third, making it a Nelson

trifecta on the podium. The street stocks held their closed club championships and as per usual it was the final race that decided the outcome when bumpers were in full use. KC Rose took to the Soper boys who were leading on points going into the final. It was Steve Soper whose retaliation on Rose was his undoing, climbing the wall and rolling, ending his title ambitions. The end picture saw Cody McCarrison take the title by a point from Matthew Watson with Ryan Musgrove a further point back. Brent Steer and Wade Thorn took out round one of the club side car championships. There were family members racing in various parts of the country as well. Jack Burson picked up two wins in Nelson while father Ian Burson took two wins and the super saloon title at the Canterbury Championships in Christchurch.

WEDNESDAY 2 December 2020

Sport

Wanderers have Dressage takes centre multi-code weekend stage at Rough Island Wanderers Sports Club again had a full weekend of entertainment and action with cricket locally and both the men’s and women’s Rugby 7s teams competing in Marlborough at the Moutere Sevens. The Taylors Wanderers-Motueka premier cricket team were back at the idyllic setting at Botannics for a 50 over game against ACOB. Having recently bowled ACOB out for 57 on 24th October, the combined team were buoyed by the return of Harsh Visavadiya who has performed so well with the bat this season. However, it was David Zohrab from ACOB who dominated this encounter, being unbeaten on 85 from 110 balls as he guided ACOB through to 226 for five off their allocation. Jackson Harris (2/31) and Harsh (2/33) stood out for Wanderers-Motueka from their 10 overs. The other bowlers all struggled but toiled away manfully. The visitors started very badly in the run chase with both openers dismissed with only eight runs scored, and although Visavadiya did top score, it was for only 21 before being trapped LBW. Boe Bamford, Logan Ogilvie, Kyle Paki Paki and Andrew Beatson all got started but David Zohrab backed up his batting performance with excellent bowling taking four for 28 off his 10 overs in a comprehensive man of the match effort.

The Taylors Wanderers-Motueka side were eventually dismissed for 100 in the 35th over. In a contrasting performance, the Taylors Wanderers-Motueka T25 College team continued its unbeaten run with a very good win over WTTU Stars. Noah Lausen excelled with the ball returning figures of four for 18, ably supported by Ryan Hobbs (2/8) and Eddie Swain with two for 11. WTTU were all out for 65. After a steady start which had the game poised a little at 33 for three, Josh Gill and Ryan Hobbs combined to take the team past the WTTU total. Ryan was particularly aggressive on 22 off only 10 balls, while Josh continued the fine form from his previous three games to record a 4th win for this developing young side. Wanderers rugby teams travelled to Spring Creek over the weekend. There a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all in the entertaining sevens that was provided by the Moutere Club. Although not progressing to the semi-finals this time around, both the men’s team and the women’s were competitive and displayed a healthy club spirit. Nelson clubs were to the fore in the winner’s circle with Waimea taking out the women’s section, Marist the division one final and Stoke victorious in the division two decider.

Jacob Page The second competition of the threepart Richmond Roast House Summer Series saw riders from numerous regions gather at Rough Island to showcase their skills. As it was a premier show, it attracted riders from as far as Canterbury which enhanced the competitive. It allowed local riders to compete against competitors they wouldn’t usually compete alongside of. Saturday saw riders braving the elements as the rain poured down, but it did not dampen the standard of dressage. Mother-daughter duo Vanessa and Charlotte Baxter stood out with consistently solid performances. Charlotte, riding Fleurdlene Fanfare and Glendale Elijah, had consistently high scores and winning performances in the introductory level classes, while Vanessa won three out of four classes aboard Jazzaway in the very strong elementary level. Julie Fraser aboard Fandango was once again a star of the

Angela Valentine and Gusto Heathers Papaver. Photo: Supplied. show at Novice level with only one test scoring below 70 per cent, this is definitely a combination to watch out for. A small number of Marlborough riders made the trip over to showcase the high standard of dressage in their region. Melissa Galloway had two high-class performances aboard Windermere Integro at Advanced Medium level while Tessa Van Bruggen aboard Fiorenza had two wins at Small Tour level.

Maggie Hillock and Aramore performed very well in the Nongraded Preliminary classes with two tests scoring over 70 per cent, and in the Nongraded Novice classes there was tight competition between Julie McKay and Sally Austin-Pearcey. It is very exciting for the Nelson Dressage Group to see performances improving across the board, the quality of horses and riders only gets better each year. Riders will now be busy training and re-

fining their performances in anticipation of the Premier League Tournament which will take place on the January 16 and 17 at Rough Island Equestrian Park. This is a great opportunity for riders to perform in front of some of New Zealand’s best judges. Before January, there will be another opportunity for riders to polish tests and have some fun at the Saddlery Warehouse Nelson Xmas Cracker A great way for riders to end the year.

More experience, More papers, More choice Last month we became the largest group of newspapers here in Nelson/Tasman. The most copies printed and the most newspapers delivered to all homes in our area. By far! That means we deliver the largest base of potential customers than any other media. And we are all owned by local families. We eat sleep and drink in the same towns as you. We know what’s going on and we report it. So when you want to tell the locals something, the choice is simple. Use us. More experience, more papers, more choice. Call our market team today and let us help your business prosper.
