‘Little mongrels’ cause $3k damage Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Damage to sports buildings in Brightwater has become so severe that trespass notices are being taken out against the offending vandals. A group of five teenagers have
been captured on temporary cameras, installed by Tasman District Council, after continued vandalism at Lord Rutherford Park racked up repair costs of over $3,500. Wanderers club manager Diane Drogemuller says it’s got to the point where enough is enough. “There is so much ongoing dam-
age to buildings that as soon as we fix something up, it gets smashed to pieces again.” The group have kicked off door knobs and handles on the sports buildings and public toilets and used them to smash the toughened glass windows. “They’ve also pulled down electrical cables in the changing shed
and created really dangerous situations where live wires are hanging out of the ceiling, and then there’s all the broken glass to deal with,” Di says. A fire extinguisher was stolen from a Seifrieds building close to the park and subsequently let off in one of the changing rooms. “The worst thing for us is that the
whole cricket wicket block was sprayed with poison three times over a period of six weeks, which killed the grass,” Di says. “Each time the dead patches had to be seeded, top soiled and watered to get the grass back up, at great expense. The players are

Adventure awaits for family Jo Kent Ditching the daily grind to travel the country on a house bus is an adventure of a lifetime and the Ballagh family from Richmond have just taken the plunge. When Rebekah’s husband Hamish said he was ready for a career break, she suggested they rent out their house and travel the South Island with their toddler Mikah and dog Jet. “I’ve always, always, always wanted to live in a bus or do some tiny living. My work running coaching programmes and creating mental health resources is entirely Continued on page 4.

‘Little mongrels’ cause $3k damage at Wanderers from PAGE 1 gutted they won’t get any home games this season and the social side of having food and drink after the game has really impacted on income to the club.” In addition, revenue from the bar and kitchen that is usually open during the home games has also dried up, leaving the club out of pocket this season. “It’s totally unacceptable.” And now residential properties are also being targeted. Constable Jamie White says that five youths have been identified and interviewed and referred to Youth Aid. “We are in the process of trespassing them from three locations,
Lord Rutherford Park, Wanderers Sports Ground and a residential property on Ellis St.” The couple who live at the property on Ellis Street have been the subject of harassment by the teenagers as their property overlooks the sports ground. “They’ve just been a pack of little mongrels,” says the property owner, who wishes to remain anonymous. “We’ve been constantly harassed and intimidated by them, and the community is fed up with their language and the damage they are creating.” She says that as her garden backs on to the grounds, she often sees them smashing up the grandstand and being abusive to people. “We haven’t been able to use our

It’s downright intimidation.” Jamie says the police appreciate people in the community staying vigilant and reporting any crime to 111 if it’s happening or only just happened, or to call 105 if it’s already happened. “Don’t be afraid to call 111 if you see a crime being committed, even if it’s youth crime.” Diane says that every dollar spent repairing the property is money taken away from community sports. “They are sh**ting on their own patch, so to speak.”

Police warning over 2021 trial by social media CMX500 Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jennifer@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Police are warning locals to not resort to online vigilante social media justice in the wake of a suspected spike in crime across Wakefield. A spate of locals has taken to Facebook recently reporting night-time activity, including drones being flown over their property, hearing people on their property, cars in their driveways, and a group of young people throwing various items onto roofs and properties. Wakefield Police constable Jamie White says they are aware there has been some suspicious activity not only in Wakefield but also the wider Tasman District. “Whilst we appreciate the value and power of social media, we would ask that you contact us before you post it on social media,” Jamie says. One person, who didn’t want to be named, says they woke to neighbour’s dogs barking and heard someone run into their trailer. When they went to see what was happening, those by their trailer ran off. The owners then called the police who
attended but no people were located. Jamie says that if a suspect has entered your property, it is important to keep foot traffic to a minimum.
Wakefield Police constable Jamie White is aware of some suspicious activity in the region. Photo: Supplied. “The chance of a police dog finding a track is significantly reduced if you or others have contaminated the track.” Police have been called to two suspicious activities, however, Jamie says often people are reporting the incidents well after the event, so police have limited descriptions. “We will continue to have a police presence where possible,”
Jamie says. “If a crime is being committed or a suspicious person or vehicle has been seen please call 111 immediately.” He says police are aware there have been further comments via social media which have not been officially reported to them. Reports of fruit, mud and stones being thrown at homes have been reported with comments indicating young people are involved. Police have spoken to a couple of persons of interest, but say enquiries are ongoing. Those posting on Facebook have indicated both men and women are involved. “This nuisance behaviour is likely youths,” Jamie says. Jamie says he is mindful that over the holiday period there are many young people on holiday, who may be causing these issues. “It is being commented on on social media and in general not reported to us,” he says. “We prefer that any suspects are nominated to us rather than having a trial by social media.” He says there are times those named are not the ones responsible and it sometimes can cause unfair backlash on the person named and their families.

TDC to mandate staff vaccinations: Following the country’s move to the red traffic light setting, Tasman District Council has announced a Covid-19 vaccination mandate for its staff. The mandate will be enforced on 25 March, with evidence of a first vaccination required no later than 4 March. Chief executive Janine Dowding says the council’s covid vaccination policy, which was finalised in December 2021, had signalled that a move to red envisaged a requirement for all council roles to be fully vaccinated. From 1 February, staff who are not vaccinated will need to work from home.
from PAGE 1 online, so I said, ‘You know what, let’s buy a house bus, do it up and we’ll do a big trip!’” Rebekah says. The couple wasted no time searching on TradeMe and soon found ‘the one’. “We stumbled across an old 1971 Ford. I loved the character of it, and what sold it for me was that it has a fireplace in it. I just knew it would be so cosy towards the end of the trip when we got into winter.” Purchase made, Hamish spent eight months renovating the bus after buying it last April. “He worked almost full time on it for the last few months of the year and faced many challenges along the way. The worst being a major electrical fault just days before our departure date where cables just melted and burnt out. We were just grateful it happened before we’d left and that the bus didn’t burn down after all his hard work.” The couple plan on being away until June and will try to get round the whole of the South Island. “Doing the trip with a toddler and a dog could be madness or the most amazing experience,” Rebekah says. “We are kind of winging it. We will just stay in places for as long as we feel the call to stay there and leave when we feel we’ve done what we needed to do.” The couple’s two-year-old daughter Mikah has her own bunk nook on the bus

Photo: Jo Kent. complete with little painted rainbows on her wall. “The bus is 10.5 metres long and we have got as many storage places as we can possibly find for her toys. She is a real outdoors kid, so we’ll just be doing lots of walks and playground visits and she will love that.” Their first stop was Christchurch to spend Christmas with family. But just days later, their dog Jet developed an unexplained limp, which meant they spent the next month in Canterbury going back and forth to vet appointments. “The best thing about having no real plan is that we can stay in places for as long as we like with no real consequence,” Rebekah says. “We spent the first part of the trip parked up in a gorgeous site in Tai Tapu, right in the middle of a paddock
lined with poplar trees. We awoke the first morning to the bus lightly rocking and discovered a sheep scratching itself against the back of the bus.” Sadly, Jet will need surgery and the family had to head back to Richmond to leave him with relatives while they continue with the last four months of their trip. “Jet’s kneecap is popping in and out of its socket and needs surgery, plus his hips aren’t sitting in their sockets properly. We are going to miss him so much for those months. But we know he’ll get the recovery time he needs back home.” The unexpected pitstop has given them a chance to ease into life on the road. “We’re all still getting used to navigating the space and the routine of bus life, but so far it’s really lovely and we’re
able to explore the areas we are in and make the most of a roaming life.” During the trip, Rebekah will continue writing and illustrating books. Rebekah spent 10 years working as a full-time counsellor before using her experience to run coaching courses on wellbeing. While on the road, she will be working in schools across the country offering training programmes to teachers and counsellors on how to calm children and manage stress and anxiety, as well as boosting self-worth and mindfulness. “I realise I’m very lucky to be able to do my job while experiencing something that not many people get the chance to do. So far, we’re all loving it.” Follow their adventure @ ballaghs_bus_life on Instagram.
NZCT award slew of grants in January: The New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) awarded $111,983 worth of community grants to ten organisations in the Nelson Tasman region in January. These included grants to Athletic College Old Boys Cricket Club for playing uniforms, Central Districts Cricket Association for salaries and development programmes, the Louise Perkins Foundation, Nayland College for travel and accommodation, Nelson School of Music for salary, Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club for materials to clad container, Netball NZ for office rental, vehicle leases and salaries, Seed NZ for salary, and Tasman Wheelers for traffic management signage. Nelson Tasman welcome communities together: Nelson and Tasman councils will be able to make the region an even more welcoming place for refugees and immigrant communities after officially being added to Immigration New Zealand’s Welcoming Communities programme. The initiative is for regional centres that have shown they have good infrastructure and social support for welcoming refugee and immigrant communities. The programme was launched last month and opened by local kaumātua Harvey Ruru and hosted by the Nelson Tasman Settlement Forum at the Victory Community Centre, with speeches from Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, Tasman mayor Tim King, and Nelson MP Rachel Boyack. Bateup rd closed: Part of Bateup Rd will be closed for two weeks from 25 January 2022 as Donaldson Civil carry out some work. The section affected is between Wensley Road and the Café. The Richmond Loop West service will be detoured through St James Avenue and Otia Drive. A temporary stop will be in place on St James Avenue for the duration of the work.
Learning language at the library Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Richmond Library is starting up an English Conversation Group for migrants and refugees who would like to improve their English language conversation skills. English conversation group facilitator Karyn McLintock holds a CELTA qualification (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and lived overseas for years.
“I know what it’s like to live in a foreign country and have trouble understanding what’s going on. It’s not just about language, it’s about culture. Things that might seem simple to locals, can be totally incomprehensible if you’re from somewhere else.” She says as well as improving language skills, attendees will be able to ask about confusing local customs. “Things like why do people ask you to ‘bring a plate’ to a party, when they don’t want you to bring a plate at all - really they
Tasman has one of the highest proportions of new migrants in the country mean ‘bring some food’,” Karyn says. Libraries manager Glennis Coote says, “Tasman has one of the highest proportions of new
migrants in the country. We’re eager to help our new community members feel more welcome and connected by providing this friendly conversation group.” She says holding the group in the library will provide greater opportunities for migrants and refugees to access services – such as free computer classes – that will help them to settle in, meet people, and learn new skills. Karyn looks forward to learning just as much from the group members as they do from attending. “I love how when any diverse
group of people gets together, we all end up learning so much from each other. It’s going to be fun sharing interesting information about our cultures, such as recipes, traditions and cultural quirks.” The free English Conversation Group begins on 11 February and will take place every Friday from 11am-12pm in the Constance Barnicoat room. The My Vaccine Pass is required for entry to the library, and the group can still meet during Covid alert level Red.

Stranded in Oz, Kiwi cops sail home Kate Russell It started off as a joke. With the trans-Tasman bubble closed, Kiwis Kate and Con Barrell were stranded in Australia late last year, with no way to get home. “I joked to Con, ‘the only way we are going to get home is by boat’ - so that’s what we did,” Kate says. Thus, an epic ten-day mission home to Nelson on a Sunseeker Manhattan 66 was born. And not only did the husbandand-wife duo sail themselves back to their loved ones, but they also brought five other Kiwis with them. Born and bred Nelsonian Kate and ex-All Black Con, who hails from the Far North and Christchurch, lived on the Gold Coast for 12 years where they were both in the police force. “A couple of times a year I would come back to Nelson to see family, but when the borders shut down again, we thought ‘if this is the way of the world, we’d rather be home’.” They couldn’t fly back and go on MIQ waiting lists due to Kate’s assistance dog Boots. “So, within a week we were looking at boats and that was it.” Con, who was a member of the All Blacks in 1996 and 1997, says
he was “born and bred” with boats, however, it was foreign territory for Kate. “It was a mammoth task, but we went and got licensed and spoke to every expert we possibly could.” They put a crew together, which consisted of some “pretty handy” people. “I put a post up on a bunch of trans-Tasman groups for kiwis stuck in Australia to see who would be keen to join us and we got flooded with people desperate to get home,” says Kate. “There was one guy who had tried nine times to get into MIQ and one who hadn’t seen his wife and children for months on end.” They soon put together the perfect team. “We had a diesel mechanic and a guy who had done the crossing over a dozen times. We wanted people who knew what to do if things went wrong,” says Kate. “We were all strangers from all different walks of life, but we all had one common goal of wanting to get home.” After some meticulous planning, they set sail on 14 December and Kate describes the first 24 hours as “rough”. “It was pretty intense, and I’m tough. We had side swells for hours on end. All the booze came

“She wasn’t too impressed at the start, but after she settled in, she handled it like a boss.” They arrived in Opua on 22 De-
cember for customs clearance and two days of quarantine. “We had to be on the boat for ten days minimum and seven of those - 168 hours - had to be outside of New Zealand territorial waters,” says Kate. Kate and Con made it to Nelson on Boxing Day, and with all the family tracking their progress it was a memorable reunion. “They stood up on Princes Drive with the binoculars and the drones. The emotion was pretty intense as we came through The Cut.” Kate says are now in “decompressing” mode and plan to enjoy the moment. And would she do it again? “No, I’d do it on a cruise ship though. We knew it would be hard, but we did it.”

Mask messages ‘bit of a nightmare’ Jenny Nicholson Local principals were last week grappling with new information on mask-wearing by students. Nelson Principals Association president Symon Beattie says the guidance coming through was quite ambiguous and a concern as they had such a short time to implement it. “It’s a bit of a nightmare.” He says they were asking for urgent clarification to enable them to communicate what is required to staff and the community. “A number of principals have indicated they are quite frustrated,” he says. Part of the issue was apparent inconsistencies. Symon says if a family has both a 5-year-old and a 10-year-old, the 5-year-old doesn’t require a mask at school, but the 10-year-old does. They then go home to the same household after school. Year 3 students will not be asked
to wear masks, but year 4 and up will. Where there are Year 3 and 4 mixed classes, the advice is that neither year group in that class will be required to wear them. “That takes a bit of thinking through,” Symon says. “Some Year 4 students would have to wear masks and others not.” Another issue is that it appears masks will not be required in the playground and physical distancing does not need to be enforced. Symon says the amount of information coming through is overwhelming, and not particularly succinct. “It is all feeling very rushed.” He says schools are being directed by the Secretary of Education and are not operating as individual schools. He would like there to be clear, sensible, consistent standards across all schools so that it is logical for those with students in different schools. For Hira School, where he is

Photo: Jenny Nicholson. principal, close contacts of those with Covid-19 being required to isolate for 24 days is also significant. “Schools are funded on their role,” Symon says. “Having students away for a long period is an issue. If Covid-19 does come, we could also be stretched to provide relievers.” Lake Rotoiti principal Mike Allen
says preparations are going well for them. While in Christchurch recently he was able to source both surgical and N95 masks for students. He says social distancing in the playground would be too difficult to enforce, but with a big playground and small roll, they have plenty of room to spread out. Murchison area principal Andy
Allen says they have no year three and four composite classes. Year 0 to 3 will not be asked to wear masks, while year 4 up will be. He says the wearing of masks for students is a request from the government, not currently a mandate. “If a school chose to stand students down for refusing to wear a mask, they wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. We are taking a pragmatic approach to something that is hugely confusing.” Wakefield principal Peter Verstappen says they will be taking a gentle approach, supporting children to get use to wearing masks. Richmond School’s principal Tim Brenton says they have things ready for when school starts. “Teachers will lead by example,” he says. “We have a supply of 600 masks already and should be receiving more from the ministry.” “At the end of the day it’s about education and keeping the children safe.”
Could you drive the local train? Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jennifer@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Peter Lewis-Smith has gone from doctor to train driver. “I just got my certificate this week to drive the train,” he says. With just five certified drivers, the Nelson Train Society members are looking for others who would like to ‘play with serious, big, real-life toys in the form of trains’ to join them. “We are looking for drivers,” Peter says. “And for people to help with maintenance and safety protocols.” Peter grew up in Scotland, with the royal train Queen Victoria had established to travel to Balmoral passing his back yard. Hearing the train pass by and hav-
ing a goods yard behind their family home was fascinating for Peter as a boy. His interest in trains was put aside for his career years. About five years ago he retired from medicine and shifted back to Nelson from Scotland. That was when his interest in trains was revived. After taking his grandchildren for a ride on the steam engine at Founders Heritage Park, he joined the Nelson Train Society. He is one of just a handful of volunteers driving and maintaining the steam engine at Founders Park. Over the past six months this group of retirees have worked non-stop on maintenance and safety protocols required to regain their license. With a new license, they started rides again

on Boxing Day and now operate Thursday to Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Safety is the main consideration for the railway, and to keep the line and train in good condition is relatively heavy work. “We are a fit bunch but not young” Peter says. “We would love to have other people join us.” One member of the society is certified to teach others to drive the train. There is a process with people first learning guard duty, before moving to driver assistant and then on to learning to drive the train. Peter says feedback is very positive. “Children are our best customers,” he says. “They get enthralled.” While there are anything from three to 30 people on most rides, the train is available for weddings and other events and can hold about 100 people. Richmond’s outof-control weeds Sara Hollyman “Disgusting”, “ugly” and “eyesore” are words that have been used to describe the out-of-control weed growth on Nelson Tasman’s roundabouts. Complaints were made to the Waimea Weekly about roadsides, roundabouts and islands along State Highway 6 between Nelson and Richmond as well as Nayland and Quarantine Rds. Waka Kotahi manage maintenance along State Highway 6 in and out of the city, while Tasman District and Nelson City Councils are responsible for their respective city streets. Tasman Mayor Tim King agrees
roundabouts along the State Highway are looking unkempt and says he will be discussing the issue with Waka Kotahi in the near future. “They require attention, especially as they are at our gateway.” Andrew James, system manager for Waka Kotahi Top of the South, says regulatory changes brought in last year to improve worker safety in high-speed traffic environments has, in turn, brought extra costs and subsequent increased traffic disruptions when work is undertaken. He says there is a requirement for safer distances between workers and machinery and says options are being investigated to reduce the level of maintenance required.

Lake Rotoiti’s annual Antique and Classic Boat Show is the latest event to fall victim to red Covid level setting. Organiser Pete Rainey says with little prospect of the alert level changing any time soon, the decision was made to cancel the 2022 show, which was scheduled for 5 and 6 March. “With a 100-person limit at outdoor events we had no option
but to officially cancel the show,” Pete says. The show typically draws a couple of hundred owners and a crowd of around 4000 over two days. “It’s a real shame for us, for boat enthusiasts, for businesses in St Arnaud and for the local school which runs a food stall at the boat show as their annual fundraiser,” Pete says. This year the show would have received funding from the Te
Tau Ihu Regional Events Fund, administered by the Nelson Regional Development Agency, which comes as a double blow to event organisers. “This is the second year the boat show has been affected by Covid. Last year the event could only run only Sunday, after a Covid level change at midnight.” Pete says the show will be back in 2023 and encouraged owners to use any Covid downtime to make their boats even sleeker.

Heslops builds functional, modern, automotive workshop
There has been an exciting development at Lloyd Heslops Motors – they have recently upgraded their automotive workshop. Heslops Group is located at the site of the old freezing works in Kotua Place, Stoke, and for the past 20 years the company has managed to operate their automotive workshop in one of the older buildings. During Covid, they decided to demolish it and build a fantastic new vehicle workshop to suit their specific requirements. It has been fitted with new offices, brand-new equipment, and it has especially been designed to provide clearance for campervans, complete with new hoists that can handle them efficiently. There’s been lots of positive feedback from customers who are delighted with the new workshop, which is spacious, modern, and with plenty of natural light.
Heslops has recently built a new vehicle workshop to suit their specific requirements. It has been fitted with new offices, brand-new equipment, and has especially been designed to provide clearance for campervans.
History
Lloyd Heslop Motors Limited was established in 1984 by Lloyd Heslop. For many years, it became apparent that the growth of the company would eventually require shifting to a larger premises. Lloyd had been searching for the ideal site for almost 10 years and spent considerable time and resources looking at dif-
ferent alternatives. Early in 2001, Lloyd was offered the old freezing works site on an ‘as is, where is basis.’ By November 2001, he was committed to the establishment of a dream – the resurrection of a site that should have been demolished and the establishment of an entire transport complex. With 7 acres to play with, Lloyd Heslop Motors had room for all the features they required plus add-on
services catering for every need in the transport industry. Their employee base rose by another eight people in 2002 when the decision was made to hire their own builders. 2002-2003 was an extremely busy time for all. Lloyd and the build team worked on site 24/7; while the management team continued to operate Lloyd Heslop Motors and set up schematic budgets and financing for Barnicoat Developments Ltd to further their development. The signage went up and the journey of Heslop Group continues today.
Experienced staff lead auto division
Heslop’s automotive division has been in business for almost two decades now, led by two longstanding mechanics who have over 70 years’ experience between them. “We are really enjoying the new workshop,” says Gary Coles, who has been workshop manager for the past 9 years. “It
is light and spacious, it has better car bay conditions, and we’re better able to handle campervans now, so it’s all been carefully thought about.” With one staff member having recently left the business, Gary and Phil are the only two staff members working in the automotive workshop at present. “So, we’re looking to increase our staff – ideally it will be people with a passion for campervans and motorhomes,” he says. The workshop provides servicing, mechanical repairs, and general repairs. “If there’s something we can’t do, we know where to send them to,” says Gary. “The idea is people leave their vehicle with us and we’ll have it done by the time they come back.” Recently, a couple popped into Heslops, left their vehicle with them for half a day, borrowing one of the courtesy vehicles, then later they picked it up and were on their way again. With so many people’s overseas travel plans put on hold due to Covid, the team at Heslops

automotive workshop are seeing quite a number of people coming in with campervans. “Instead of going overseas they’re travelling around the country, and hopefully halfway through the year things will get even busier.” Gary and Phil’s work mainly involves mechanical repairs including a lot of work on cars, but these days the majority of their work is campervans. “Phil is my ‘right hand man,’ and although I’m the boss, we share the work between us,” says Gary. “He’s 63 and I’m 58; we’ve both been in the trade since we left school.” Gary says they are both very different from each other. “He’s very calm and quiet, whereas ‘I’m like a rat out of a drainpipe.’” If you want to book your vehicle into Heslop Automotive Workshop for servicing or repairs, send an email to: carworkshop@heslops.co.nz or phone 03 543 9400 (Ext 2).
Quality servicing and repairs
Heslops Automotive caters for all makes and models of cars, light commercial vehicles, 4 X 4 vehicles, campervans, and caravans. Their new workshop offers vehicle servicing, fuel system machine, mechanical repairs, WOF’s, auto electrical & engine management systems, and courtesy cars are available (bookings are required). The new workshop also has a wheel alignment machine, and VTNZ has a compliance certificate (COF) lane onsite. Bookings are essential for this service via VTNZ. The workshop also does heavy transport modifications and tow bars, and they have a fuel system cleaning machine for petrol and diesel engines which will clean out the engine and complete fuel system. This can save you a lot of money by not having to replace or repair fuel pump injectors. All

Heslop’s parts department has a team of four who have many years of experience in the industry between them. They have the expertise to guide you with your request and source the parts required. Having both a car and truck workshop to look after, means they always carry a great range of parts in stock.

Boyack highlights housing, health and transport as priorities

Proud to work with Heslops

Housing, transport, health, and Covid-19 recovery will continue to be the biggest priorities for Nelson MP Rachel Boyack in 2022. Rachel addressed the Rotary Club of Nelson West at the Nelson Golf Club last Tuesday. She described her first year in Parliament as a “frustrating” one for not only those in politics but for everyone in the community. “The lowlight was Covid, and the highlight was Covid. We’ve experienced the toughest years of our lives, but we’ve also seen the best in people.” Rachel said, looking back on the challenges she set herself last year, she felt proud that she had made progress on her priorities. These included housing, a new hospital for Nelson, and transport which will all continue to be at the top of her list. “Fixing the housing issue is a bit like turning around a tanker - it will take time, and we are pulling a range of levers to turn around a crisis that has been building for decades,” she said. “We’re making it easier to build new houses, we’re building more houses than any Government since the 1970s, and consent numbers have more than tripled in the last decade. “My focus this year will be to continue to advocate locally and work with local leaders like NCC, TDC, and Kāinga Ora on solutions to add the right kind of housing stock
to the region.” Rachel said hospital officials are working hard to start work on rebuilding Nelson Hospital by 2024. “We know this is something Nelson desperately needs. A new hospital was something that I campaigned on, and I’m pleased that I’ve been able to advocate to the Government and secure this commitment.” Recovering and rebuilding from Covid-19 will also be a priority, this includes progressing the vaccination rollout and rebuilding the economy. She says she has been pleased to see the wheels start moving on transport plans for the city, as well as see both councils in the region work more closely together on transport issues. In late 2021, Waka Kotahi released the final Nelson Future Access Study Business Case, its preferred programme for the city’s major routes, which was unanimously supported by the council, and endorsed by the Waka Kotahi board. “This is a huge shift - we finally have a plan. I hope to bring the Minister of Transport to Nelson this year so I can show him some of the challenges we have around our transport network,” Rachel said. “Transport issues in Nelson have been building up over decades of indecision and arguments and I’m pleased that we have a clear way forward.” She says she will continue working to make sure that the region’s transport network is a priority for the Government.

Ceramics heat up Suter for summer exhibition
what can be made with clay. “It’s about pushing the ceramicists to show us their most ambitious work. It’s showcasing the best of what they can do, and it’s exciting for the viewer.” Raw or refined, practical or pretty, the exhibition showcases just
how diverse clay can be - from Royce McGlashen’s 90 handmade beakers to Katie Gold’s breathtakingly beautiful coloured bloomers. “For me, ceramics are so accessible. It’s bound to the earth and has this immediacy to it that other art forms don’t necessarily have,” says Sarah. “It’s also an exhibition that brings the potting community together in what can be a solidary artform.” Sarah says they have had support from the Nelson Potters Association, and this year, Jarden, which has come on board as a sponsor. “Without sponsorship from businesses like Jarden, we wouldn’t be able to put on these fantastic shows. It’s really nice to see that the whole community can recognise this as an important thing to celebrate.” Fire & Earth is on at the Suter Art Gallery until 13 February and Sarah says she already can’t wait for the 2023 exhibition. “I’m impressed every time we have it, it gets the makers engaged and I can’t wait to see what they do next time.”
“These cabinets become works of art in the street, often telling stories about the area and helping to discourage tagging,” Megan says. “This is a win-win for our communities. Not only do we get amazing art works in our streetscape, but it also provides a
public platform for our local artists to promote themselves.” With more than 11,000 telecommunications cabinets across New Zealand, the project has proven so successful that it’s now in its twelfth year with about 100 murals being painted annually.

The very best ceramics from the Top of the South are heating up the Suter Art Gallery this summer. Tens of thousands of locals and visitors alike have already made their way to the Fire & Earth exhibition, with 25,000 expected over the season. “It has been received brilliantly,” says curator Sarah McClintock. The biennial exhibition opened in November and celebrates the best of contemporary ceramics in the region. It was born in 2017 after Sarah said they felt there had been “a bit of a lull” in the Suter showcasing the area’s vast number of ceramicists. “Nelson is so known for its clay, and makers with clay. A lot of people have been practicing for 40 years, 20 years, 10 years, or even two months.” It boasts some of the biggest names in ceramics in Aotearoa, but equally, it engages people

There was no age cap, and the youngest submitter was eight.” Over 100 individual works were
submitted for the exhibition, with a little less than 50 making the gallery. “There are some brilliant pots and sculptures that didn’t make it into the show.” Sarah says the exhibition is all about pushing the boundaries of

Local artist Thijs de Koning was chosen to paint the boxes which are located just by Twin Bridges. The spot is unusual as it houses two cabinets instead of just one. “I had to factor that in when I
came up with the design,” Thijs says. “There are two boxes and two bridges and I wanted to incorporate that while bringing the awa, the road and natural surroundings to life in the artwork.” He says all he needed for inspiration was to look over his shoulder. “I wanted to mirror that when you slow down to cross the onelane bridge, you can also slow down your life and enjoy the beauty of the place.”
Thijs is an early childhood development teacher as well as a tattoo artist and is opening a tattoo studio in Motueka’s Arcadia Arcade in the next few weeks. Cabinets in St Arnaud, Motueka, Clifton and Richmond are also all in the process of be given a makeover. Tasman District Council road safety coordinator Megan Bell says it is a fantastic opportunity for artists to highlight their talents to the local community and the wider world.

tal in 2018 to study architecture at Victoria University. Just two papers away from his bachelor’s degree, Caleb came to a career crossroads. “I’d say I’ve already chosen rugby, it is tough seeing my mates crack it in architecture though.” Caleb’s classmates would often question why he has not fully committed to his studies, however like any good architect, he could see the big picture. “They understand now that I have got that contract.” Caleb says it is comforting to know he has another career path with his rugby days always just one injury away from ending. He plans to not only finish his bachelor’s degree, but also obtain a masters. Beginning his career as a youngster at Wanderers, Caleb progressed through the Nelson Bays rep grades through to Tasman U18. The region was keen to retain the young talent, but his desire to study sent him over the Cook Strait. “I came to Wellington to pursue my two passions [architecture and rugby]. I had a goal to play my best footy and land a super contract, and at the same time complete my degree.” Though his study has had to be put on the backburner, he is still grateful to be doing both. Caleb enjoyed a prosperous college career for Waimea Combined which included a rare 3824 win over Nelson College and saw his side finish seventh in the
Architecture student Caleb Delany will look to build on a stellar season as he puts his studies on hold to chase his professional rugby dreams. The former Waimea College student has been awarded his first full-time super rugby contract with the Hurricanes. Following another impressive campaign with the Lions in 2021, Jason Holland came knocking and the 6’5” Caleb happily put pen to paper. Caleb says he was “stoked” about the signing. “I was hoping for a contract, so it was pretty neve-wracking waiting for that call.” The 21-year-old lock has spent the past two seasons in camp with the Hurricanes and says the environment has taken his game to the next level. “It has definitely made me a much better player, learning off older boys and the coaches all know their stuff.” Caleb has absorbed a wealth of knowledge and advice at the Hurricanes, chief among them helping him pack on the mass. “They recognised that I had the skills, I just needed to get bigger,” he says. A nutritionist put Caleb on seven meals a day and he was soon reaping the rewards as his weight has now grown to over 111kg. “It was tough, and I still have about 4-5kg to add. I am light for a lock.” Caleb made the move to the capi-

Caleb capped his final year at college with the team’s most valuable player and most valuable forward awards. “Those were the best rugby days, beating Nelson was a highlight, it was the one game we all got up for.” In 2021, Caleb hopes to feature regularly in Super Rugby Pacific with the ultimate goal of a black jersey. “I like to focus on what’s in front

Wok has new fish to fry
Jonty Dine
After spending 30 years in the tattoo studio, Warwick Bremner aka ‘Wok, will now be helping people modify their bodies on the gym. Wok is hanging up his needle as he embarks on a new challenge as a personal trainer. No stranger to stepping out of his comfort zone, Wok recently retired from competitive bodybuilding having won his final event at the age of 52. Wok says he was not gifted with bodybuilding genetics and at 20 years old weighed just 58kg. “I never had particularly great muscle building ability, it just came through sheer years of pounding away at the iron.” Eventually, Wok was able to almost double his weight and packed on enough mass to tip the scales at 90. “It was a long slow process.” Wok’s journey began as an eightyear-old when he found a book featuring bodybuilders and was fascinated. “At about the age of 14, I realised weight training was what was involved in looking like that and that’s where the love affair started.” Wok has worked as a tattoo artist for 30 years most recently at a studio in Tāhunanui. “Being such a mental job with no physical aspect to it gym has always been my sanctuary.” After spending a year out of the tattoo studio to write a novel, Wok felt the time was right to begin his next career chapter. Wok says he had always contemplated a shift from the studio to the gym. “Tattooing paid the bills, but I am
now in a situation where I can give it a crack for three years and see if I love it.” Wok is now employed as a personal trainer at CityFitness in Nelson. He says it has been a challenge getting back to the books. “It’s quite daunting and exciting to find out how much I don’t know,” he says. With about 70 per cent of his body tattooed, Wok says his body art proved a hinderance in bodybuilding competitions. “Tattoos aren’t going to accentuate muscle on stage, they are distracting and just not good for the image.” In his younger days, Wok could alleviate the issue with a strong tanning solution which covered tattoos. However, this has since been disallowed. “The new stuff doesn’t cover them as well, so you have to be better to beat someone that is not tattooed. If you were identical the non-tattooed person would probably win it.” Despite this disadvantage, Wok went on to win a number of competitions including novice championships and the NABBA nationals. Most recently, Wok won a gold and bronze medal at the 2021 New Zealand federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Pro League in Christchurch. He says he is now in the best shape of his life as he prepares for his latest challenge. “I couldn’t be happier with the encouragement from all staff and the other trainers at Cityfitness. I am looking forward to helping people achieve their goals.”
