Police praise drivers Police have thanked the region’s drivers for their behaviour over the long weekend, with only one serious crash blighting an otherwise good three days on the road. An 18 year old female was involved in the only serious crash, which occurred on a one way bridge near Murchison. While the highest speed was recorded near Atawhai where the driver clocked 169km/h in a 100km/h zone. Across the district police wrote out 365 infringement notices of which 203 were for speed. Road policing manager inspector Jenni Richardson says drivers were generally well behaved in comparison to the past five Labour Weekends where there have been a total of 59 crashes, four of those fatal. “Overall I thought everybody was really well behaved and so did all the staff I spoke to,” says Jenni.

With more people on the road, long weekends are regularly targeted by police. Six people lost their lives on the roads in New Zealand on Labour Weekend last year, although none of those were in Tasman Police District. Jenni says that lowering the tolerance to just 4km/h over the speed limit and having double the amount of staff on the road has certainly sent a message to drivers. “They saw a lot of police out on the road so they were more compliant. You don’t need to speed to get to where you go, it’s not going to gain you anything in the long run and I’m very pleased. A lot of tickets were written out but we’re a big district so I’d expect that anyway.”

There’s going to be a lot more than just $4500 in prize money on the line at this weekend’s Stihl New Zealand King of the Forest competition at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum at Higgins Park near Wakefield. Battle to be King of the Forest FROM PAGE 1 record straight. “Stu is going to be back with the same guys as last year but the logging guys have been talking about it amongst themselves and they don’t want to let them win again,” Rex says. But first Rex says the logging teams will need to tidy up their act. Last year the logging teams showed plenty of speed only to be hit hard by time penalties for not completing the tasks up to standard. The winning team will receive $2400 of equipment from Stihl New Zealand with second-place receiving $600 from Richmond Equipment. As well as prize money and pride, there will also be family bragging rights at stake this Saturday. Stu will be competing against his brother-in-law Nigel Kelly who will be lining up in one of the Kelly Logging teams.
Rex, who is Nigel’s father and Stu’s father-inlaw says the Stihl Logging weekend also features a number of other attractions including a wire rope splicing competition with $1500 prizemoney sponsored by Bowater Toyota, demonstrations of the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum’s sawmill and wood chopping contests. On Sunday there will be tree felling demonstrations, traction engine and horse rides and a chance for children to find treasure buried in sand using a digger. Rex says a restored mobile log hauler that was used for training forestry workers in the Golden Downs woodsman School in the 1950s and 1960s will also be on display. The Logger’s Dream machine was one of six that was imported to New Zealand from the US and was ‘rescued’ from a property in the Marlborough Sounds earlier this year. The Logging Weekend runs from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
FUN FAIR: Noa Banks, 4, dances with streamers at the Ngatimoti School Festival on Sunday morning. The annual country fair was again very popular this year and school principal Ali Turner says it would have raised “well in the 20,000s”. “It was very successful,” she says. “It’s a community day and that’s what it’s all about, everyone pulling together.” The money raised will go towards many different aspects. “Basically it’s for students. We want something visible, whether that’s in the sports domain, and we also help pay for trips. This time we’re hoping to upgrade our library resources too.” Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Morning fire guts garage An elderly father and his son have lost their two vehicles after the garage they were in burned to the ground on Monday morning. Five fire appliances were called out to the Rochfort Drive property in Richmond at about 8:45am after a neighbour noticed the garage had caught fire. Craig Piner, of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, says the garage was “fully involved” and was threatening a two storey home behind it. “The wind was pushing the smoke and flames towards the two sto-

“This was the first fire they’ve had so there’s a bit of stuff to work through.” While a full investigation was to begin yesterday, Craig says there is certainly nothing to indicate that it could be suspicious. Being a garage, there were a number of possible ignition sources. “It’s just a matter of going through and seeing where the most damage is and what ignition sources there are in that area.” They were also hoping to speak with more witnesses. “Because as you can see there is not much left [of the garage].”

rey house behind the garage, which they were trying to protect with garden hoses,” says Craig. “So that was our priority once we found everyone was out of the house, to protect the neighbour’s house.” The “significant structural fire” was under control within 20 minutes, enabling the fire fighters to remove the iron and get into the roof. Craig described the owners of the property as “shocked”.

The biggest ship to ever enter Port Nelson attracted crowds of hundreds on Labour Day. Raroa is in port to receive an $80 million makeover and is expected to be here for at least a month. Hundreds of people lined the waterfront for prime viewing of the 250 metre ship as it entered through the Cut at around 10am on Monday morning. Dozens more hung out the front windows of their waterfront apartments to get a good view. Port Nelson Harbour Master Dave Duncan says five tug boats were used to get Raroa

into port and it went smoothly, considering the size of the ship. “It all went very well, no problems at all and we appreciated that everyone stayed clear of us and made it easier.” Port Nelson won the contract to fix the oil storage ship last month and the contract will see around 200 workers fly into Nelson to work on it, as well as local workers. Nelson was picked because of its sheltered harbour and fa-
vourable weather conditions, Port Nelson chief executive Martin Byrne told Waimea Weekly last week. Raroa is usually based in the Maari oil field off the Taranaki coast and will return there after the upgrade. Martin Taylor was at Fisherman’s Wharf with his two kids to watch Raroa come in and says it was an impressive sight. “Because it was Labour Day I thought I’d bring the boys down to have a look, it certainly fills up a fair chunk of the haven doesn’t it? Very impressive.”

The Tasman Makos celebrate winning the ITM Cup Championship final. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The celebrations hadn't stopped late on Sunday night, two days after the Tasman Makos created history by winning the ITM Cup Championship for the first time. Second five-eighth Tom Marshall labelled Friday's 26-25 finals win over Hawke's Bay as "ugly" and admits he was pretty depressed walking back to the try-line on the 79th minute as the visitors scored what could have been a match
winning try. First five-eighth Ihaia West, who was struggling with his kicking all night, skewed his chance wide to hand Tasman their first ever title and a spot in the Premiership for next season. "You look around and the whole region, they're all proud of you. The boys worked so hard. It was an ugly win, but it was probably a fitting one,” says Tom. For full coverage of the game see page 26.
Village deal could be done this week Andrew Board Residents of Waimea Village met last night to discuss a new era of the village with the residents as its owners. The meeting comes just days before a deal for the residents to buy the village is expected to go unconditional and the man behind the move, Kit Maling, says all is looking good. “Due diligence will be completed, hopefully by Thursday, and we’ll be ready to make some decisions. I think there’s a few issues we want to check on and our guys are doing a very thorough job. We have made sure that we have done this correctly because we don’t want any liabilities to fall on the people in the village in the future,” he says. “I’m not prepared to hand it over to them until it’s kosher.” The meeting last night was to inform residents of the progress being made, to elect the two resident representatives for the board that will take control of the village from next month and to distribute shareholder agreements and a company constitution. All going well, the sale of the village from its current owners, Michael and Carolyn Wright, will go unconditional on Friday and the sale will be completed 14 days after that. If it goes ahead it will end almost three years of bitter disputes between the residents and the owners over huge increases to the monthly levy residents pay on top of rates and other normal bills.

Model expo a big hit
Grant Wyllie of Kaihoka, chairman of Alliance Group Ltd, Murray Taggart and Arthur Win of Dovedale, at the annual suppliers and shareholders meeting at the Nelson processing plant. More than 100 local farmers came together for a conference to learn about the co-op’s plans for the upcoming year last Wednesday. Afterwards the crowd dined on some of their very own meat, which was a novelty due to the fact that ninety-five percent of all Alliance meat is exported, never reaching local supermarkets or the plates of the farmers who produce it. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
The organisers of the Nelson Model and Hobby Expo say this year’s event exceeded all expectations with more than 1000 people through the doors. In fact it was so popular, Bruce Jury says more people had been through the Stoke Memorial hall in the first hours on day one than at the entire show last year. “We were more than rapt. We had well in excess of 1000 people through the door,” says Bruce. “We were really happy with the variety of the displays too and that’s what people told us. Quite often you’d get granddad and grandson through, but this time grandma and all the grandkids
were there too.” The Nelson Model and Hobby Expo was put on by a group of 20 like-minded hobby enthusiasts from here, Blenheim and Christchurch. There were more than 1000 items on display ranging from motorsport models, Star Wars collectibles, Meccano, trucks and plans, and earthmoving machinery to decorated eggs. The theme for this year was Kiwis in Motorsport and there was a special tribute to the late Jason Richards – Nelson’s most iconic driver. The money raised from the Nelson Model and Hobby Expo will go towards the Jason Richards Foundation.

New reporter for Waimea Weekly As the days get longer and the lawns are starting to require constant attention, some in our community are focussing their green fingered efforts on growing a different type of grass. Yes, it’s cannabis planting season and every year we ask people to keep an eye out for growers heading out to set up their patch. If you’re out enjoying the great outdoors and you come across something that seems a bit fishy get as much detail as you can, such as descriptions of the people and car registration. The more we can disrupt these operations before the plants get established, the less likely the drugs will make it to market. For people in rural areas the presence of cannabis growers is more often than not associated with other crime in their neighbourhood, such as theft from farm sheds. These are not people you want frequenting your neighbourhood and we are asking people to generally take more notice about who comes and goes. Across the country indoor growing operations are becoming more prevalent, however in Nelson Bays the majority of cannabis is still grown outdoors. Deerstalkers, pig-hunters, trampers, people taking part in outdoor recreation, and people working in the rural and aviation industries can all be excellent eyes and ears for police. Cannabis plots won’t necessarily be large. Growers now tend to plant in smaller groups of 10 to 15 in the hope they go unnoticed, with other small groups of plants inevitably close by. We are asking the public to report any suspicious activity including: People seen repeatedly going to certain locations, people seen at odd times, people somewhere they are not supposed to be, shovels, spades and other such equipment being carried into the bush, vehicles in rural areas closed to the public or with difficult access, unusual lights in rural areas at night, items going missing from rural properties that might be used in accessing plots and cultivation such as farm bikes and fencing equipment. Even when cannabis is being grown inside buildings there are tell-tale signs for the public and landlords to look out for such as: Residents increasing fence heights, curtains closed day and night, shed and garage windows being blocked out, bright lights on constantly or at strange times, sounds of fans continually running, vehicles and people visiting hours at all hours of the days, distinctive smell coming from rural areas or properties. If you see something suspicious or have information about drug cultivation, manufacture or supply ring your local Police Station. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Hundreds line up to see visiting All Blacks
All Black prop Wyatt Crockett announced “it’s good to be home” during a flying visit to Nelson on Friday. Four All Blacks; Wyatt, Beauden Barrett, Brodie Retallick and Tawera KerrBarlow arrived as part of their annual “All Blacks to the Nation” trip to different parts of New Zealand. They were here to say thanks to fans for all their support ahead of the Northern Hemisphere tour. While in town, the quartet met children at Broadgreen Intermediate School, made a public appearance at the Richmond Mall, visited Nelson Hospital and Nelson Airport. Hundreds of All Blacks fans, and even some in Springboks colours, lined the mall for autographs and photographs. Beauden was a fan favourite and was asked by one Garin College student “why do all the ladies love you?” Wyatt, a former Nelson College first XV player, grew up in Golden Bay, and pledged his support for the Tasman Makos in the ITM Cup Championship final during a Q&A session. Caleb Troy of Stoke School says he really wanted to come see the All Blacks because they were his favourite players. “They look different in real life to how

For ten years a group of local good sorts have been making, rolling and selling truffles for charity and the group’s founder says after ten years she’s still as thrilled as ever to see it come together. Anne Bolton started the idea making truffles and selling them for orphans in eastern Europe in the Brightwater Church Hall. After five years she and her husband Peter visited Moldova – Europe’s poorest country – to see what the money is used for. She came back energised and says as this year is the tenth anniversary of the fundraiser

she’s keen to go back. “When we started I had been reading some Mission Without Borders articles about abandoned and orphaned children – what got me was that they had no one that specifically loved them, they were seen as lower class and of course the horror stories of what happened to them’.” Anne doesn’t do much of the organising these days, it’s left to even more kind-hearted folk who form the committee that organises the fundraiser. This year the truffles are being sold through local churches, work plac-
es and through local milkie Trevor Nicholls. Each year around $10,000 to raised for the charity and Anne says they need more volunteers to help roll the truffles this year. “We can always use more volunteers, it’s always a great day and it’s very social.” If you’re interested in helping roll some truffles the “rolling” is on Friday, from 9am to 9pm and on Saturday from 9am until they’re finished. People are welcome to help for as long or as little time as they have. Truffles can be bought on the day or on www.truffles.org.nz.

Church to reopen When Steve Rollo was told that it could take months before the Richmond Church of Christ was back in action following the April floods, he thought someone must have been exaggerating. Six months later and churchgoers will finally get to use their main building again, having used the hall with a concrete floor ever since the flood. Residents in the nearby Bird St lost possessions and their homes were gutted, and the church copped the brunt of it too. But Steve, pictured right, has taken a positive approach to
the clean-up, and through good insurance cover, is now ready to open what looks like a brand spanking new church. “Nobody wanted the flood or wished disaster on anyone but there is good at the end and we really believe God has blessed our church,” he says. To celebrate the reopening, Richmond Church of Christ is holding an open day celebration this Sunday beginning with a 10am service. The church will be open until 3pm and Steve is inviting the community to come down and have a look. There will also be a bouncy castle.
Tapawera’s fun day out
Want a taste of the country? Well look no further than the Tapawera Boys and Girls Agriculture Show, which is being held again this Saturday. The show is the biggest event on the Tapawera calendar and has been running for 70 years now, making it one of the oldest agriculture shows in the country. The theme for this year’s event, which is held at the local school, is “back in the day”, reflecting on how the community was 70 years ago.
Spokesperson Robbie Reynolds says the event is affordable and perfect for families. “Kids have a good day out. It’s free for them and just $3 for adults,” he says. “You’ve got everything from animals, crafts, woodchopping, vintage cars, motorbikes, music, sheep shearing, kids entertainment, food you name it.” All the money raised goes straight back into the community, for groups such as the local school, St John and Plunket.

Cook book reaction blows mall manager away The manager of Richmond Mall says she is “blown away” by the response to its recipe book. Belinda de Clercq says she’s had customers stop her in the mall to say how much they’ve enjoyed it and she’s had dozens of requests for more copies. “It’s been really great, I’m so happy with how people have reacted to it and supported it.” The cook book was to help celebrate 40 years of Richmond Mall and was delivered free to 30,000 homes in Nelson and Tasman. It featured recipes sent in from locals in various sections. There was a glaring error in the book though with a Kiwi Black Forest Cheesecake printed with the wrong ingredients. Belinda says it was unfortunate but the right recipe has been printed on the right and people can cut it out and stick it over the original one printed in the cook book. “It was a mistake and we apologise for that but we are trying to put it right by putting the right recipe in the Weekly so people can enjoy it.” A couple of other errors include on page 8, where 2 cups of ground almonds should be added under the ingredients; on page 12 where it should be 8 oz of butter instead of 80 oz; on page 10 it should be 200g of butter, not 2g. Despite the errors the cook book had been a huge success, she says. A thousand extra copies of the cook book were printed for the mall so people could pick more copies if they wanted. Belinda says the idea of a cook book was fantastic and she’s is thrilled that local people thought so too.
Kiwi Black Forest Cheesecake Ingredients
Method
425g Chocolate fudge cookies
Place 250g of the cookies into a food processor and blitz until fine then add the melted butter and press into a greased 20cm spring form tin and refrigerate.
125g butter, melted Filling: 250g packet of softened cream cheese ¾ cup castor sugar 3 tspns gelatin ½ cup hot water 300ml thickened cream 400g tin mixed berries ½ cup roughly chopped black forest chocolate ½ cup roughly chopped cookie pieces Topping: Syrup from tin of berries 1 tblspn castor sugar
Beat cream cheese and castor sugar together until smooth in a small bowl, add hot water and sprinkle gelatine over top, stir until dissolved. Whip cream into soft peaks and add the cream cheese mixture and gelatine, fold in drained tin of berries and chopped chocolate and cookies and transfer into prepared tin with base. In a saucepan place the syrup from the berries, castor sugar and gelatine, heat gently over stovetop, when dissolved drizzle over the cheese cake and sprinkle left over chocolate and cookie crumbs. Refrigerate for 6-10 hours (results are best when left over night)
1 ½ tspns gelatine Mixed handful of cookie chunks and chopped black forest chocolate
This recipe was created by me by taking a traditional kiwi cheese cake recipe and Cadbury Black Forest Chocolate – a classic kiwi favourite. It evokes memories of family movie nights on the couch eating black forest chocolate. Recipe: Sara-Anne Wilkinson
Serves 8-10.

Councillor off to help in Africa

Simon Bloomberg Senior reporter

Tasman district councillor Judene Edgar is about to move out of her comfort zone in a big way. Judene will be taking a month off her family and council duties in Richmond to work as a volunteer for an AIDS clinic in a remote part of South Africa. She will be teaming up with medical staff and other volunteers at the Medical Outreach HIV Education project in KwaZulu about four hours north of Durban in Natal on November 3 and she can’t wait. “One month is not going to change the world but they need volunteers so I decided to go,” Judene says. Judene says she will be involved in a number of tasks including helping medical staff treat patients and providing AIDS education and nutrition checks. She will also help out with community projects “like building fences and working in the community gardens”. Judene says she studied AIDSrelated dementia when completing her behavioural sciences degree at university and has

Although she has comprehensively researched the Medical Outreach HIV Education project she admits she doesn’t really know how she will cope with the challenging conditions. “I have tried not to pre-judge what it will be like but I know there will be a lot of suffering and misery over there. I also know that it will be hot and humid – between 28 and 38 degrees – so it’s going to be a real challenge.” Judene says the other challenge will be leaving her family for a month especially with only limited email and phone communications. “I’m not sure of the extent of the com-
munications in KwaZulu but I hope I’ll be able to email my family at least once week.” Judene says she has also carefully planned her trip so that she will only miss three council meetings and has “juggled as many things around as possible” to make sure she doesn’t miss out on her other council commitments. Judene says the Medical Outreach HIV Education project relies on donations as well as volunteers and she hopes to take over disposal nappies, plastic bedcovers and syringes. No way. Our roads and infrastructure cannot support our present population. Once the infrastructure is there then growth will be good! Lee M Griff.
It is good news, however I can only hope that we can cater for this growth, there are not enough jobs for Nelsonians to start with, the teens have nothing to do here and the traffic is bad enough now with the existing routes in and out, also services such as stormwater, sewage, sewerage will be a problem. Maling says thanks: I’d like to say a quick thank you to everyone who voted for me in the recent local body elections. It was a shame we couldn’t quite get there but I enjoyed my three years on council, serving the people of Richmond and Tasman. Kit Maling (mayoral candidate).
Fab idea. Keeping my kids safe is the paramount thing in my car. Even other kids go in my spare. My son is tall and he is 7.5 but will remain in a booster as long as possible. His neck is still probably not strong enough to not sustain injury in case of an accident. Booster and carseats save lives. We are one of the only countries in the world who are behind the 8 ball on this issue. England changed it’s laws about 5 years ago and even Aussie have changes. In Sweden kids rear face till seven because it is safest. We need to remember its actually about the kids and that’s all that matters. Bridget Hobden.
Change to child restraint law: And yet they can go on school buses that don’t even have a normal seatbelt. Dez Tinee.
It seems a good idea at face value but when you look into it it seems more like a money-making scheme with the car seat manufacturers. Don’t get me wrong, child safety is absolutely the most important thing but the numbers of 5-7 year old injuries and deaths are incredibly small and the children most at risk’s parents will probably ignore this new law anyway. James Burke.
Yes of course keeping our kids as safe as can be is a good idea. But like above I do worry about bus

Supporting our local police Richmond • Wakefield • Murchison
The Richmond Police are out in our community looking after the people and businesses that lead their lives here. The friendly local staff know the area, know our people and are dedicated to our town. Working closely with Murchison, Blenheim, Buller and Nelson, and with an officer based at the Wakefield police station Richmond Police play a big part in keeping the top of the South safe. This year they have been working in with the nationwide Prevention First strategy which sees the police seek
out crime prevention opportunities as part of their existing day to day work. The team have refocussed on recognising repeat victims of crime and are finding successes in this strategy every day. This has involved looking beyond operating as a response to crime and preventing the causes of it as well. While this includes becoming aware of hotspots for criminal activity and known repeat offenders, they are also identifying the vulnerable members of the public in order to pre-empt crime before it occurs.
Senior Constable Glyn Cunningham and Sergeant Mal Drummond of the Richmond Police. Senior Constable Glyn Cunningham says focussing on the prevention of crime and coming up with a solution or plan from stopping the situation occurring in the first place is working well. “We are also working with other agencies to stop crime, from victim support, women’s refuge, WINZ, we have a great network working together. The police at the Richmond station welcome anyone with a question or issue to approach them, their open door policy means any member of the public is welcome. “Sometimes, you may have a problem but not know where to go or who to tell, even if the issue isn’t for us, we can put you on the right track with who to talk to.” A reminder from the Richmond police is to be vigilant in keeping yourself safe in the community. Things like locking your car, putting away valuables and simply looking out for local businesses and other members of the public are important in putting prevention of crimes first and with summer fast approaching, people need to up their awareness on the comings and goings of the community. Police work incredibly hard to provide relevant outcomes for the community, a big help for the team has been receiving funding to appoint a Neighbourhood Support coordinator, Marty Price, which means the public now have a way to prevent crime in their own neighbourhoods and let police know of their concerns. “Neighbourhoods in Richmond have been forming watch groups for years, and this is a way to communicate their thoughts back to the police and have a role in the prevention of crime” says Mal. Another asset to the police has been the extra eyes and ears of the community in the shape of the Community Patrol group. “Working beside these groups means we are putting prevention at the forefront of our policing, and the community involvement is great. We couldn’t do the job we do without Marty’s support, or the community patrol who are out there volunteering every weekend.”

A local couple’s 50th wedding anniversary was a reunion in more ways than one on Saturday. In keeping with the usual celebrations, family and friends gathered from all over the country, and some from as a far afield as Australia, to see Bruce and Margaret Keelty celebrate their fifty year long commitment. But what made this one all the more special was that the flower girl and pageboy from their wedding ceremony all those years ago were able to attend. Wayne Bromell was just five years old when he presented the ring at Bruce and Margaret’s wedding and Valerie Cale was four years old when she walked up the aisle as flower girl. Margaret remembers the duo reluctantly holding hands for the proceedings and says Valerie turned to her mother halfway through and whispered “do I have to hold his hand all day?” “It’s quite lovely to have them here to celebrate with us again.” The special moments didn’t stop there for Margaret, who after 24 years was reunited with her six brothers and sisters, who haven’t been all

As for their 50 year marriage, Bruce puts it down to the couple being best friends. “We have been the best of friends. We do everything together, well apart from when I play golf. We communicate really well too. That’s the secret really.” Highlights over their years of marital bliss have been a Mediterranean cruise, which the self confessed “Mr and Mrs Ordinary” admit they were completely blown away by. “Our friends have been such a huge support to us too, we seem to have accumulated a great bunch over the years.”

Twilight gala returns From bagging strawberries, sign writing, to painting ladybirds, Wakefield School students have been hard at work preparing for their annual school gala. PTA member Michelle Blackbourn says the twilight gala is a highlight on the school calendar and is “definitely the major fundraiser of the year by a mile.” Michelle says the event‘s point of difference is that it is one of the only galas in the region that runs
during the evening , giving it a relaxed atmosphere. “It’s a really great evening to enjoy. The kids just love it and everyone from the community enjoys it.” Michelle says they expect a fantastic turnout this year and welcome not only nearby communities to head along but the wider Richmonnd and Nelson districts too. The Wakefield School Twilight Gala begins next Saturday November 9, from 4pm to 7.30pm.

• “In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to love,” true. And I think the “spring thing” has already begun. But every young man, middle-aged man and extra-mature man should be very aware of the power of fragrance in association to romance. Now let me explain how I think of Romance. It has little to do with sex. Well not to begin with. That may [or may not] come at a later stage. “The way to a man’s heart is via his stomach,” true. “ONE of the ways to a woman’s heart is via fragrance,” and a sensible, sensitive man will take note and remember this. • Fragrance to a woman has a powerful reaction. It may bring back memories. It may create hope. It may simply give her great pleasure. I knew a farmer once, who sometimes would pick a rose as he passed through the garden on his way to lunch. He would present it to his wife a little bit casually, and she would melt. Now this man knew a few things. • He didn’t do this every day. No. No. Just sometimes. But he was always assured of a special meal [to his liking] that evening! Clever, that isn’t it! • There are so many plants that you can add to your garden that will have an alluring effect, and help create a feeling of mystery. The lure of fragrance will create the urge to seek that plant out. An intimate relationship is established and leads the visitor deeper into the garden. This creates a feeling of allurement, which can be quite magical, and adds to the enjoyment of the garden. • So if you are planning a fragrant garden, we won’t mention violets. We all know of their fragrance. But
do you know about monardas? They could be tossed into the herb category, along with “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.” Planted near a pathway, a leaf could be plucked and crushed giving a wonderful herby fragrance. • We all know about the lilacs [syringas] flowering now. But they can be expensive to buy because they are grafted. However, do you know about the bush varieties? There are several available now that take up little space and don’t break the bank as well. The fragrance will make you want to bury your nose in the blossoms. Hydrangeas are lovely after a rain. Not “heady” or sweet. Just beautifully “clean.” • Sweet peas are known to us all. Every year I make sure to have one growing beside the window where I have lunch most days. I wouldn’t be without it! And a courtyard with citrus in the flowering season would be out of this world! • Do you know of the chocolate cosmos. I won’t mention its botanical name. Far too hard to spell let alone pronounce! Lovely, simple deepest red flowers really do emit the fragrance of hot chocolate. Then there is lily of the valley, dianthus which is a MUST for a Tussie Mussie, and migionete and alyssum in the annual garden. • On a mild summer evening, Peter and I sit on our veranda and sip a glass of wine each. Roses climb up the veranda posts, and oriental lilies are planted nearby. That is a WOW for fragrance in the soft evening. And as for romance? Not too bad for a couple who have reached their “three score years and ten”. Romance lives on forever I say,

Nine year old chases national glory
Luca Palmer-Donaldson will have to wait another seven years before he can legally ride a motorcycle on the road – but that’s alright, he’s too busy riding on the dirt anyway. The Brightwater School student is nine years old and amazingly rode his first motocross bike when he was just three – a Suzuki JR50. This weekend he’s off to race at the national championship on the North Shore where he will be competing in the 9-11 year old 65cc class against 80 of the best riders his age. “We’re aiming for top three but it’ll be pretty tough,” his father Shane Donaldson says. “Those kids ride it all the time. We’ve never even seen the track. He’ll be coming up against kids who are nearly 12 too.” Only 40 of the riders will qualify through to the final where the format then includes a best of five series. “It’s all over five races and it’s all on points.” Last year Luca and his twin brother Nico both attended the event. Luca was second in

the 7-8 year old class and Nico won the 6-8 year old class. While they look identical, their demeanour on the track is much different. Older brother Jake, 16, described Nico as a “cruisy” competitor, who wasn’t too bothered about taking a spectator role this year and hadn’t trained as much. Luca, on the other hand, is super competitive and spends hours practising after school. “Luca hates being beaten. He’s got the killer instinct. If someone overtakes him he grits his teeth and gets them back.” If he’s staying in accommodation at one of the tracks Luca doesn’t feel the nerves as much. But otherwise he’s often throwing up on the way there. “We call it the motocross bug. We’ll be driving down the road and he’ll be hanging out the window vomiting everywhere,” says Shane. Luca says the pressure of rac-
ing and his fear of crashing is behind the anxiety. But the pressure certainly isn’t coming from the family and Shane says the boys all grew up on motorbikes and spend hours riding on the track at their WaimeaWest property. “They can drive anything too,” he says, after one of the twins helped reverse the family 4WD outside the house. “They took to motocross like a duck to water. But if they said tomorrow that they didn’t want to ride then I wouldn’t cry about it. We all do it because we love it. It’s good fun.” While it’s good fun, motocross is also a very expensive sport and Luca’s appearance at nationals has been helped by a group of local sponsors. Those sponsors are; Donaldson Landscape and Earthwork, Nelson Motorcyle Centre, Fresh Choice Richmond, Emerson Mytton Builders, Pomeroys Tea and Coffee Company, Hydraulink, Endurance Logging and Donaldson Civil.

Clubs to benefit from Hot Shots

Clubs are hoping to reap the rewards of Tennis New Zealand’s new Hot Shots programme, which was officially launched last week and is aimed at getting more primaryaged children playing the sport at a club level. Previously Tennis New Zealand’s major kids programme was Grasshoppers, which involved training sessions at schools and was followed by a tournament. The new initiative is aimed at making sure school children who enjoy or excel in tennis carry on to a community set up, before eventually joining a club – in Alison McQullian’s words “creating a better pathway”. “We’re not seeing enough children from the schools coming into the clubs. Tennis is
seen is a bit of an elitist sport and we want to break that barrier down,” she says. There are four main components of Hot Shots; schools, coaching, community play and tournaments. Community play is a new aspect, and can be run by club volunteers, parents or coaches. It’s a play based programme which gives all of the children a “fun, supportive” environment with specifically sized racquets, balls and courts, and without the need of a professional coach. So far, Hope, Motueka, Tasman, Nelson Lawns and Wakapuaka clubs were signed up to Hot Shots, which is aimed at children age 3-12.

Cyclists lap Moutere Competitive cyclists had another chance to be involved in the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival, lapping the Central Rd Circuit in Upper Moutere on Saturday. The event was put on by Tasman Wheelers and featured competition regulars across five different classes, with A and B Grade riders completing five laps for a total of 90 kilometres through the Moutere Valley. Young rider Sean Hambrook, who has just returned from racing overseas, was the overall winner in the A Grade and was followed across the hill-top finish line by Brad Tilby and Robin Reid.
Richie Howes, Jay Blazek and Kyle Ralfe made up the podium for the B Grade riders with Mark Jaine taking out the 72km C Grade race ahead of Scott Ingram and Jon Linyard. This was Mark’s first race back from a shoulder injury. Neil Riley was first place in the 54km D Grade race while Marty Campbell was the victor in the 36km E Grade event. The next race on the Cycle Festival calendar is tonight’s Tasman Wheelers Tuesday Evening Blast from 6:15pm in Richmond. Region’s courses on show at golf festival A new golf tournament played on three different courses across the region has been labeled a success by its director. The Festival of Golf, which saw more than 100 competitors from outside of Nelson compete with a large selection of locals, was held at Nelson Golf Club, Greenacres Golf Club and Motueka Golf Club last week. The concept came about due to Nelson’s lack of a major golf tournament, the want to bring out of town players here, and it was the perfect opportunity to showcase the three 18 hole courses in the region. Points were taken from four rounds of golf, with the Nelson Golf Club being used twice. Tournament director Derek Drysdale says The Festival of Golf was the only tourna-

ment which was played on multiple greens in Nelson. “It showcased the quality and the variety. All three golf courses have got different features so they’re not playing the same thing all the time. They’ve all enjoyed that,” he says. Derek says the plan was for the golfers to spend five days in the region checking out the sites including the Nelson Arts Festival, which alligned with the golf. “We called it the Festival of Golf to tie in with that actually. We thought it was a good mix.” The prize value was approximately $15,000 and was courtesy of major sponsors Nelson City Council, Bowater Motor Group, Jennian Homes, Waimea Estate Wines and Taylor Made Golf.

Tasman clinch championship Shane Christie couldn’t bear to watch as Ihaia West lined up his 80th minute conversion. Had the kick gone over, Hawke’s Bay would have snatched the ITM Cup Championship in the most dramatic fashion. With thousands of East Stand spectators shouting in the hope it would put him off, Ihaia’s potential match winner had gone wayward. The Tasman Makos had done it. It wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but it was the most important. And while his team-mates jumped around in celebration, the Tasman captain quietly walked back to halfway. When asked what the result meant to him, Shane said “everything mate” but still appeared like the win had yet to sink in. Looking at the statistics, the game should have been won by Hawke’s Bay. But Tasman were clinical when they needed to be, and even though the halftime lead of 23-10 was closed up to 26-25. Shane says “it just wouldn’t have been right” if the Magpies had stolen the victory at the death. “I never doubted that we would win but I didn’t think it would be that close,” he says. “This is a pretty proud

It’s a privilege to be the captain of this team and I just want to do the best I can.” Having played in front of two mediocre crowds in Blenheim over the past fortnight, Nelson’s supporters arrived in force for the biggest provincial game to played on our soil and Shane says it means more to get the win here. “The community got right behind us and we were lucky we came away with the win.” Tom Marshall echoed his cap-
tain’s comments and says it was great winning in front of a large Nelson crowd, estimated to be 6000. “It’s everything that we ever wanted since the Makos had started,” he says. “You look around and the whole region, they’re all proud of you. The boys worked so hard. It was an ugly win, but it was probably a fitting one.” Playing in the Premiership will be a tough task for Tasman, who until this season has been an underperforming side across all ITM Cup formats.

River Control 2013/14 Season Spraying To Start
Nominations for Waimea Plains Freshwater and Land Advisory Group
The Council will be undertaking ground based herbicide spraying to control woody and invasive weeds as per its usual annual programme in the fully maintained rivers, from November 2013 to April 2014 inclusive. Rivers included are the X&Y river rated sections of the Waimea/Wairoa, Wai-iti, Eves Valley, Moutere River and Company Ditches, Upper and Lower Motueka rivers, Riwaka and associated waterways, Tadmor, Sherry and Motupiko rivers. In Golden Bay the rivers included are the Waingaro, Anatoki, Takaka, Aorere and Kaituna. Herbicides used will be Grazon, Glyphosate and Metsulfuron. The main purpose of the spraying is to maintain flood channel capacity hence woody weeds growing on islands and beaches in the fairway are the main target. Please refer to the Council’s website (search ‘river management’) and the Council’s 2013/14 river work programme for further details. Alternatively contact one of the Rivers and Coastal Engineers on Ph. 03 543 8400.
Do you want to be involved in decision making for water quality management in the Waimea Plains? The Council is setting up an advisory group to enable greater involvement by the community and stakeholders in developing the water quality management provisions for Waimea water resources. Nominations for membership on the advisory group are being invited from people with a significant interest in water management in the Plains. The ten member advisory group will be made up of councillor and iwi representatives and eight members of the community. The purpose of the group will be to consider the existing and potential future water quality challenges in the Waimea Plains and develop solutions for managing the water quality effects of land use activities. Any recommendations from the advisory group will contribute to further development of policy and rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan. The Council’s Environment and Planning Committee will select the Advisory Group members from the nominations received. A person seeking membership can be self-nominated or nominated by another person or organisation, however members will be appointed as individuals, not as organisation representatives. In considering membership of the group the Council will take into account the balance of interests required for: • the geographic spread of members, • knowledge of the range of water body uses and values, and • the ability of the applicants to work in a collaborative, consensus-seeking manner Further information and online application forms are available on Council’s website or application forms can be obtained from Council Office and Service Centres. Nominations must be received at the Council by 4.00 pm, 1 November 2013. www.tasman.govt.nz
Navigation Safety Bylaw: Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting – Lake Rotoiti – 9 and 10 November 2013 The Rotoiti Power Boat Club will be conducting a high-speed power boat racing event at Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November 2013. Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster, the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event. Also, exclusive use of Kerr Bay, Lake Rotoiti is provided for. Access to and from West Bay ramp is not restricted. Vessels wishing to transit through or enter the reserved area during the event may do so only after consulting with an event Marshall, and then may only do so when, and under such conditions that, the event organisers specify. Event communications will be using Channel 17 on Marine VHF radio. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz /recreation/boating-fishing/special-events-and-activities.
Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting for waka ama regatta – Kaiteriteri area – 15 to 17 November 2013 Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri swimming and water-ski areas and a speed-limit uplifting for those involved in the annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ waka ama regatta, between the hours of 3.00 pm and 8.00 pm on Friday 15 November 2013 and 8.30 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 16 November 2013 (with a postponement date of Sunday 17 November 2013 if required). The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing and swimming from occurring within that area for the time specified. Event marshalls have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to waka ama and support vessels directly involved in the event between Anawera Point and Guilbert Point, including Fisherman Island but excluding Otuwhero Inlet and adjacent to Little Kaiteriteri beach. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz /recreation/boating-fishing/special-events-and-activities.

Draft Psychoactive Products Policy The Psychoactive Substances Act 2013 established a new licensing system for psychoactive products, often referred to as ‘legal highs’, and persons who wish to manufacture or retail such products. The Act also allows councils to develop a Local Approved Products Policy to control the location, density and proximity of retailers of psychoactive substances. The Tasman District Council has opted to produce a Draft Local Approved Products Policy which proposes the following: (i) Premises licensed for the sale of approved psychoactive substances must be located within the central business zone, as defined in the Tasman Resource Management Plan, in Richmond, Motueka or Takaka. (ii) Premises licensed for the sale of approved psychoactive substances are not permitted within 100 metres of a kindergarten, early childhood centre, school, library, community centre, reserve, playground or place of worship. (iii) New licenses for the sale of approved psychoactive substances are not permitted from premises within 150 metres of an existing premises holding a licence (interim or full) to sell approved products. The full Statement of Proposal can be viewed during ordinary office hours at Council’s Richmond Office, Service Centres and libraries. It can also be viewed or copied from the Council’s website www.tasman.govt.nz All submissions on the proposal are to be in writing and posted or delivered to: The Administration Advisor, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, 189 Queen Street, Richmond 7031, or they may be emailed to info@tasman.govt.nz or faxed to 03 543 9524.
