Kempthorne hits back over ‘cynical’ claim Andrew Board Relations between the region’s two mayors appears to be at an all-time low, both accusing the other of being “irresponsible”. Yesterday, Nelson City mayor Aldo Miccio said the decision by Tasman District to appoint a new chief executive a month before the Local Government Commission’s decision on whether or not the councils should amalgamate was “cynical” and could cost ratepayers more than $500,000 if the position was made redundant after an amalgamation.

But TDC mayor Richard Kempthorne hit straight back, saying recruiting a new CEO – after the resignation of current chief Paul Wylie – was the only responsible course of action and Aldo was out of order saying otherwise. “It is very disappointing that the mayor of Nelson has chosen to take a needlessly provocative, irresponsible and extremely uninformed view with regard to this recruitment process. It is equally disappointing to see him continuing to peddle the obvious fallacy of a redundancy payment in excess of $500,000. Apart from meddling

in an employment process of which he has no knowledge or responsibility, he is doing nothing less than scaremongering about the potential costs,” he says. Aldo had earlier said that he was concerned, as the appointed representative of Tasman and Nelson electors during the amalgamation process, that the decision to appoint a new head before the commission’s final decision on amalgamation was a “seemingly irresponsible, cynical, antiamalgamation decision.” He went on to say: “It is of concern because some people may say, for the sake of a one

month delay, TDC have instead decided to risk ratepayers funds in what may be a $500,000 redundancy payment to this new employee, within as soon as one month after his employment in January. The wise thing would be to hold the shortlist candidates and delay the decision to appoint from January to February after the Local Government Commission’s decision.” Richard says 48 people applied for this role in the full knowledge of the current amalgamation debate and have viewed the role

as a serious career opportunity regardless of what the people of Tasman choose, if the amalgamation debate goes to a vote. “We need to continue to deliver and this is what we are focused on doing. Rather than be agitated about the potential uncertainty as the mayor of Nelson seems to be, we are focused on the delivery of effective governance and essential services. Our residents deserve no less.

“It must be remembered Mr Miccio represents the people who signed his petition, where as the council has to look after the long-term interests of the whole district.” If the Local Government Commission holds up its draft decision to amalgamate the council’s, residents in both regions will need to vote for it before it would go ahead. The Local Government Commission decision was expected in late November this year, but it was delayed until February next year.

Watchmaker winds back the clock Rod Clark just couldn’t keep away. The popular watchmaker and jeweller is back working full-time from his Sundial Sq business and carries on 35 years cemented in the industry. Rod spent the past six months driving 160 tonne dump trucks in and around the mines down on the West Coast, spending every other week back in the store. But with the two three month contracts now over, he’s back where he belongs, to the delight of his loyal customers. As a child, Rod originally left school to become a watchmaker, after having an interest in pulling a part pocket watches of his father’s. “I liked the mechanical side of the repairs and then of course I got in to the retail side of it, which is a different ball game really. But it’s fun dealing with the public,” he says. Following a 9000 hour apprenticeship, Rod’s boss deceased, so he took over the running of the workshop. He then stayed on for 18 years, before working at Paul Harris Jewellers. But he’s now had close to 18 years experience of running the watch making and jewellery side together in his own business. Rod says it’s good to be back full-time, but did enjoy the truck driving experience. “I really enjoyed the mine work. I enjoyed the camaraderie and the truck driving etc. It’s just totally different. It’s two separate worlds.” But the truck driving has been pushed to one side for now, which will please his loyal customers. “It’s the sort of business where my name is above the door and everybody expects to see me.”

Market puts Redwood Hall back on the map

A country market put together by a bunch of local residents has boosted the popularity of the iconic Redwoods Valley Public Hall. The Redwood Valley Country Market is held once a month at the hall, which was first built in 1887 as the Redwood’s Valley School. Three of the local women involved in organising the market say the original target was continuing the longvity of the hall, as well as bringing the wider community together. The school roll was never more than 20, though, and many complained that it was too cold and damp for the children. In 1931 a new school was built on the other side of the Moutere Highway. Over the past 80 years, it has been used as a community hall which has featured church groups, birthday parties, weddings and entertainment. But the arrival of the market has boosted its popularity with more people deciding to use the venue. A 60th birthday, a wedding and the voting for the election have been recent highlights. But if the market continues to be successful, it’s likely to get some much needed patch up work, says Jacqui Pestell. The next market will be held this Saturday from 9am.

St Paul’s market wows

Thousands shop to win Thousands of Raeward Fresh customers entered Shop ‘n’ Win in its first two days of competition, leaving manager Wayne Diedrichs amazed. Wayne says the competition has exceeded all expectations as a store owner and is now hoping one of his customers will be the eventual winner. Shop ‘n’ Win gives customers from selected stores the chance to win $5000. Customers can enter the draw following any purchase in a participating business. The competition, in its fifth straight year, runs until December 22. Wayne says the competition has drawn a lot of interest. “It’s the right time of year going into Christmas and we knew it’d be popular,” he says. But Wayne was blown away by the response so far. 39,000 people entered last year, but that number is about to be broken in the space of just two weeks. Close to 40,000 entry forms have been printed, with many retailers requested more already because of huge public demand.

A fundraising market held inside the World of Wearable Arts and Collectible Cars Museum exceeded all expectations, says its organisers, following a feature in the Waimea Weekly. The St Paul’s Catholic School’s Christmas Wish List Shopping Evening Market raised more than $4000 for the school. “We were very happy with that. It was very successful,” says organiser Heather Lackner. The money raised will go towards the sacred space as well as improving IT equipment in the school. The market featured dozens of local stalls from finger puppets, salts, to remote controlled helicopters. Heather says it was a unique market but the added inclusion of a visit through the museum gave it its own Kelvin Oram sells puppets at St Paul’s Catholic School’s Christmas character. “We’ve had really good feedback from stall Wish List Shopping Evening Market. NEWS IN BRIEF

GARIN COLLEGE STUDENT SAYS ‘YES’ TO NMIT AWARD: A Garin College student who was part of a business team that made and sold moisturizing bars at the Nelson Market is the winner of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology YES Award for Outstanding Enterprise Skills. Laura Moriarty will be presented with her award by NMIT chief executive Tony Gary at the Garin College Prize Giving this Thursday. The NMIT YES Award for Outstanding Enterprise Skills recipient is selected by the YES Coordinator for exceptional performance in the YES programme 2011. The winner receives $2500 towards their study fees. BLOKARTS SET SAIL: Murray Shaw is one man who hasn’t minded Nelson’s blustery conditions during the past week. In fact, he hopes it continues. Murray has launched the world’s first blokart specific track built to the new standard, at Richmond Park, and it is now open to the public, despite more than half the track yet to be completed. An official opening is likely to be held in December. Murray is hoping to lure re-elected prime minister John Key down for the ribbon cutting. But the fun has already began. A group of Waimea College international students were amongst the first people to try the blokarts out yesterday. The track was given consent by Tasman District Council last Wednesday and the diggers were on site straight away. Murray says there is already future bookings in place, including the 2012 South Island Blokart Championship in September.

Early Learning Centre gets more healthy hearts

Sid and Bobby Page, of Richmond, won flights for two to Sydney through a St John competition and thanks to Mondo Travel in Richmond. The raffle proceeds have brought the Events Ambulance appeal total to $40,000. Photo: Andrew Board.

The Richmond Early Learning Centre has received a Healthy Heart award from the Heart Foundation for its commitment to nutrition and physical activity, for the second consecutive year. Teacher Rebekah Cook says it’s important to implement steps in children’s life. The Early Learning Centre also offers nutritious food for some students, which has always been a healthy and balanced diet, says Rebekah. “We’ve got a great chef. But we also provide information to parents about what constitutes a healthy lunchbox.”

The Heart Foundation’s Mark Dunn rewarded teacher Rebekah Cook and students Hayley Riddoch, 4, Julian Wiehira, 4 and Kaite Lohmann, 3 with a Healthy Heart award.

Author talks Turkey A regular Richmond family spending an extraordinary three months in Turkey have told their story in a book released this month. Matt Watson, his wife Rach and three kids; Holly, 6, Toby, 5, and Bella, 2, lived in a cave, killed scorpions in their sleep and saved a drowning swimmer, amongst many unusual experiences during their three month journey, titled Hot Sun and Scorpions. Matt decided to take the family to Turkey to give his children a new cultural experience. “I didn’t want the world to revolve around the five kilometer radius that we live in when you go to the shops and the schools,” he says. He set out with the intention to write the book prior to the trip, and started writing a travel blog as an early test. “It

was through the amount of people that asked Rach and I about the trip. It was either ‘why the hell are you doing this, are you mad?’ or ‘It must have been an amazing time what was it like?’” This was the first book he had published and he found it “far more difficult” than he anticipated. Writing a book is a common occurrence in many people’s bucket list, but Matt says he is more of a “marathon guy” when it came to life goals, and never expected to see his name on the cover of a book. “I love my sports so having the practical side of sitting down and writing was a bit of a challenge. But it was very rewarding to get it done.” The book can be purchased from Paper Plus, Page and Blackmore, Fresh Choice and many more leading retailers.

PASSIONATE: Green supporter Amy Hinly raises her sign on Gladstone Rd. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Richmond’s most loyal Green supporter Phillip Rollo The Green Party had its best ever election and one Richmond woman likes to think she made a heavy contribution that result. Amy Hinly spent six hours a day raising a ‘Party Vote - Green’ sign on Gladstone Rd. Amy has spinabifador, which means she is unable to walk. So she spent her three hours, twice a day, sitting on her mobility scooter parked up on the footpath of Three Brothers Cnr, in the lead up to the weekend’s general election. The reponse from the public was very mixed. She recieved toots, finger pulling, waves, smiles, thumbs down, thumbs up and much, much

more. In fact, during the five minutes Waimea Weekly spent speaking with her she was given the middle finger by a grown man in a Range Rover. After blowing kiss back to her detractors, Amy admits she wasn’t phased by their hand gestures. “It means my sign is working. It means they have read it,” she says. Amy wanted to thank one man who even got out of his car and gave her a box of chocolates. Lifting her sign about was her way of contributing, says Amy. “I would love to stand on the street, but I can’t. But there’s nothing wrong with my arms.” The Greens’ 13 percent was the highest ever.

Just a thought... Susan Gill Recently I got to hold a gorgeous baby girl aged about one month old. Later her mum and I sat there for a while just gazing at this beautiful baby. At this time of year many people think of babies; one baby in particular. But Jesus is not just another cute baby. Jesus grew into a child – a child that found favour with God and with the people in his community. Although sinless, Jesus was not always compliant. His earthly parents did not always understand his actions. Probably still cute but not quite so manageable as he had been when he was a baby. The child grew into a man and worked as a car-

penter until he was around 30 years old. Probably no longer cute; certainly not blonde haired and blue eyed! Jesus became socially unacceptable as he lived with and loved those on the fringes of society. He really ticked off high society and the religious elite to the point where they killed him. There was nothing attractive about his death; it was ugly and painful, as far from cute as you can get. But of course it didn’t end there. Jesus rose from the dead. God’s incredible power enabled that to happen – it was the most amazing event that ever happened. Such power would have been awesome to behold. But again there was nothing cute about it. We’ve sung this morning a song called “The greatest day in history” and that is exactly what it was – the greatest day ever! Because Jesus rose again, we too can live after we die. And there will come a day when God’s awesome power is displayed again. In the meantime Jesus sits at the right hand of God praying for us – how awesome is that! Jesus is so much more than a cute baby who we remember at Christmas time. Jesus will come again one day. The return of Christ means essentially that it could happen at any time. That’s why we need to be prepared, why we need to watch and pray, to be alert. It will be sudden. It will be quick. It will be unexpected. We cannot know when it’s going to happen, so we need to be prepared for it to happen at any time.

Once upon a time a lady found a home away from home… The place she’d always lived was a wonderful abode with a sprawling backyard filled with trees and a garden that never seemed to end. It had been the perfect spot for her children to roam, but they’d left this nest a long time ago. She knew the time had come to move herself and she knew exactly what she wanted. There would be plenty of space to relax, she would have all the creature comforts, and her home would be so much easier to upkeep.

The neighbours would be a friendly bunch, they’d always have fun when they got together, and of course there would be a garden to keep her green fingers busy. That left quite a few boxes to tick, but after searching far and wide, she decided there was only one answer. Its name was Oakwoods and with that her new chapter started….

This Week

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

Hello again and what a busy time I have had in the last two weeks. I promise that this will not turn into a baby update session but I have never spent such a lovely time in ages. I forgot how small they really are when born so early and I think that all the nurses in the neo -natal unit in Christchurch should be given immediate “sainthood” status! The help and kindness shown by all I met was just inspiring and I am pleased to say that Baby Benjamin is doing very well, as are the family, and he should be home in a few more weeks. Christchurch is very broken and battered and as I drove around (mainly looking for a park!) it was quite upsetting to see my beautiful city so destroyed. However, the Botanic Gardens and the grounds around the hospital really saved me as they are still beautiful and many of

the rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas etc were still in a stronghold in the new growth. Tony Murrell said that full flower and looking great, as were the many varieties Camellias, magnolias, citrus etc should be thinned so that of maples both Japanese and European. Things to do in the next week or so include: • Removing old flower heads and seed capsules from your rhododendrons and azaleas to prevent the energy going into producing seed instead of into new growth. This is done by simply pinching out the old flower head carefully to allow the new leaves to form. At the same time you can trim them to shape. • Pruning and thinning out Camellias of all types to encourage new growth and to ensure that air gets around the plants. This will discourage mealy bug and black aphids from getting

From Don at Richmond Q: Several weeks ago I planted out 3 rows of dwarf beans. Soil was good and I made sure they were watered etc but only about 1/3 of them have germinated. Why would this be? A: I feel that the reason your beans have not come up can be answered in a word – temperature. The bean seeds will not germinate while soil temperatures are too low. I suggest that the ones that came up were at the ends of rows where they got a bit more sun. Beans can be planted from October but I would plant some more now in November as the weather is generally warmer and importantly for germination, the night temperatures are improving. You should have success with your second planting. Do protect the new plants from wind if possible also as they are prone to snap off at the base.

MURCHISON

Murchison is the place where overseas travelers flock to, particularly during the summer months. These tourists have googled and researched, checked out lonely planet and discovered that Murchison, recognised as the White Water Capital of New Zealand, is a must visit destination when they travel to our country. Most Tasman residents have been there. After all, it is perfectly located for a convenient stop on any journey south to refuel and refresh. But how many of us have traveled to Murchison with the intention of staying put for a while and appreciating all that it has to offer? A few years ago there was a brilliant ad on television that advised Kiwis ‘Don’t leave home til you’ve seen your country’, and we think that is great advice for locals. If you are planning a trip away over the summer holidays, why not plan a trip to Murchison and discover the jewel we have on our very own doorstep? Only an hour and a half away, at most, from Richmond, Murchison provides an opportunity to get away from it all and to experience rural New Zealand at it’s best. You’ll be there in a flash and won’t have to fork out a fortune on travel expenses. Murchison has attractions galore to suit everyone from the most adventurous thrillseekers to those looking to for a relaxing break enjoying beautiful bush walks and river swims. And Murchison is packed full with friendly people who will make sure your stay is fantastic. A trip to Murchison promises relaxation, adventure and fun, whichever you feel like. Murchison is our district’s southern most township and is a central base for the many outdoor activities in the area, including historic gold trails, rafting and kayaking, horse treks, tramping, hunting and fishing. Local business owners are gearing up for their busy summer season when it becomes a Mecca for visiting the great outdoors. There are many accommodation optionsa vailabe ranging from backpackers, campgrounds and motels to luxury lodges in spectacular surroundings. The Murchison glf course is a par 35, nine hole course in a lovely setting near the

Buller River. The township boasts cafes, pubs, gift shops, antique stores, tearooms, an award winning butcher, a supermarket and a general store, a petrol station and a hospital. Well worth a visit is the Murchison Museum staffed by locals who will be happy to help you find out more about the rich history of the area. At the Buller Gorge Swingbridge Adventure and Heritage Park you can take a few minutes or hours to explore nature and history or get right into thrillseeking. At 110 metres in length the Buller Gorge Swingbridge is New Zealand’s longest swingbridge. The swingbridge takes you safely across to a network of feature filled walking tracks to enjoy at your own pace with many information panels placed all around. There are a number of other walks leading off the loop, make your choice depending upon the available time. Try a ride high above the river on the Comet Line. This 160 metre flying fox is suitable for the “young at heart” of all ages. Seated comfortably and safely strapped in you’ll love the sensation. Try your hand at Gold Panning while at the adventure park. With expert tuition and with the dirt from their favourite spot you’re bound to find some gold. The Upper Buller Gorge offers one of the premier jet boat runs in New Zealand. A trip on the jet boat offers a thrilling ride up to the Ariki Falls, then spin back down beneath the swingbridge, and on to the earthquake rapids for a little whitewater excitement, before heading downriver to enjoy the beauty of the scenic reserve and marvel at the efforts of the early gold miners who tunnelled through solid rock to divert the mighty Buller. The Gold Rush Jet departs daily during the summer months, conditions allowing, and by prior appointment during winter. Ultimate Descents offer rafting and kayaking trips that will enable people from all walks of life to discover the adventure of whitewater river travel in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere. Based in an area known to be one of the wettest in the world, this gives us the chance to get out

GIRL POWER: Young Football Fern Emily Jensen has gone on leaps and bounds since becoming a centre back. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Emily has sights set on World Cup Phillip Rollo Emily Jensen isn’t just a one-trick pony. The Young Football Fern wore the captaincy armband against the old foe, Australia, and despite captaining the Mainland Pride side in their 6-1 ASB Women’s League final loss to Waikato BOP, Emily has her sights firmly set on leading New Zealand at the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, all from the heart of the defence, a position she had never played just two years ago. Emily has spent the majority of her playing career in the forward line, ever since she kicked her first football at just four years-old, until the 17 yearold sensation was selected in the Mainland Pride squad last year. Her coach Michael De Bono sprang a big surprise on Emily, converting her into a central defender. “I remember where we were and he’s just like ‘Emily, centre back.’ And I was looking around to see if there was another Emily,” she says. “I remember saying to the other centre back that you have to tell me what to do. I had no idea what I was doing.” Emily’s height and blinding speed has seen her develop in to one of the country’s top female

defenders. New Zealand selectors took note and selected her for the three match under-17 series against Australia. Emily captained the Young Football Ferns in the third and final match, where New Zealand claimed a 3-1 victory, giving them a historic series win over their bitter rivals. “It was very awesome. Our coach made it really clear that the series was really good for us. But now we have to put it behind us. It’s only a step of the journey.” But football isn’t the only code Emily excels in. She is a Tasman record holder for triple jump, was part of the first ever Waimea College netball team to finish inside the top eight in New Zealand and she’s pretty handy with the touch rugby ball as well. Netball will be put on the backburner next season, and while touch rugby remains a passion throughout the latter end of summer, it is clear football is Emily’s future. She was recently named in a 24-person squad for further training camps in the summer, before a OFC Women’s Under-17 Qualifying Tournament squad will be confirmed in April. If they win the tournament, the next step will be the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Welcome to the world’s longest par 5 Golden Downs president, Preston Shaw, right, with the club’s green keeper Val Griffith. Photo: Andrew Board.

Craig Lautenslager leads the Men’s A 1500m at the Harold Nelson Classic at Saxton Oval on Saturday night. Craig was the eventual winner, holding off Waimea College’s Tom Stringer in a time of 3 minute 59.06 seconds. Tapawera’s Chris Brake jumped 1.90m in the high jump, while Brendon Barnett won the long jump with a distance of 7.36m. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The list of must-do golf courses around the world has just been added to by one, but you won’t find it in the US, Scotland or even in Dubai – it is closer to Tapawera. Golden Downs, a nine-hole course with around 45 members, now has the world’s longest par 5. It is a whopping 721 yards, or 660 metres, and ten yards longer than the next biggest in the United States, according to New Zealand Golf. When volunteers of the club decided to extend the seventh hole two years ago they were aiming for the longest par 5 in Australasia to give them a point of difference and encourage people to come out and play the course. When their new tees were ratified by NZ Golf the body began trying to find a longer par 5. They couldn’t, and so now Golden Downs has a claim to golfing fame. But club president Preston Shaw says the hole hasn’t found favour with all that play it. “Some of the lesser golfers struggle with it. We had our first competition

using it last month and not one person pared the hole,” he says. Interest is growing though and bringing much-needed attention to the club. New Zealand’s two largest golfing magazines are running profiles on the course and a television show has also expressed interest in covering it. Long-serving green-keeper Val Griffith says the attention is more than welcome, despite the extra workload in maintaining a hole almost the length of seven rugby fields. “I think it’s great, it gets people talking about us and we’re already getting people coming along because of the hole.” The hole was the brainchild of club member Trevor Timpson, he says golfers from all over New Zealand will be keen to have a go. “It adds something to this club, it’s a beautiful course, but to have an attraction like this, here in Nelson will hopefully get people out here.”

RUNNING MAHANA: Matt Reid competes in the Run Mahana held at Wollaston Estate on Saturday. The supreme winner on the day went to Phil Costley who won the half marathon in 1 hour 11 minutes 25 seconds. More than 400 competitors took part in the 10km leg. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Tasman Thunder did everything asked of them and got the early bragging rights over the Greymouth Grizzlies. Round one of Suspension Developments Tasman Thunder Stockcar Challenge Cup went the way of the home side thanks to an impressive runaway display from Liam Smith and some smart tactics by experienced head and captain Cody Teece. Liam started in pole position and dodged his way passed the opposition to win the race and finish as the only home driver amongst the top four. But it was still enough to see the Thunder take top honours. Cody says the result was well earned after an awesome team effort. “We took it pretty seriously and we knew what we were getting ourselves into and we knew we just had to go out there and try our best, and that’s exactly what we did,” he says.

Cody credited the team’s blockers, which tied up the Grizzlies, giving Liam space to run. “Once I took out a couple of Greymouth cars I could sit in front of Liam and clear the path for him.” The Tasman Thunder has been together for the past four seasons and Cody says it’s a much different ball game to individual racing. “You go out there knowing that you’ve only got five other cars on the track to worry about, which is of course the other team. So you just get out there and do your best and try and protect your team mates.” The second round of the Stockcar Challenge Cup will be held in Greymouth next year. Nelson will host race action again this weekend with the ELF Super Cup series bringing 16 of the South Island’s best super saloons to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway. Racing starts at 7pm on Saturday.

Academy lures young talent Three of the region’s top young footballers are moving to Wellington, hoping to secure a pathway to America. Hope’s Darrell Hannah, 17, and Richmond’s Furkan Kokcu, 16, will join Nayland College midfielder Cory Brown, 15, at the Olé Football Academy for 2012. Olé combines full-time football academy training with education. It was founded on the idea that the team too often gets in the way of individual player development. The academy’s success at helping pupils gain US College scholarships was the biggest drawcard, says Furkan. Darrell has been a member of the AMI Nelson Suburbs Mainland Premier League squad for the past two years, while Cory made his debut for the team this season. Furkan is a former Richmond Athletic Under-19 player, but played his 2011 sea-

son with FC Nelson College. Furkan is a central midfielder and competed in the Nelson College first XI that reached the top six in New Zealand. The three players say a lack of exposure in the region, which does not have its own ASB Premiership side, made the move out of Nelson inevitable, just a few years earlier than they first expected. Furkan says a change of scenery will be good for the three players. “It pretty much puts us in a professional environment.” A regular day at Olé involves two sessions of football training and two sessions of school work. They are there from 8:30am until 6:30pm. Former pupils of Olé include recent All Whites Jake Gleeson, Cole Peverley, Craig Henderson and LA Galaxy midfielder Dan Keat.

You will need to supply proof of all income for the year ending 31 March 2011. This can be through: a summary of earnings or income confirmation from IRD; income confirmation from WINZ; investment of earning statements for the tax year; statement of earnings from your employer. If you are self employed a personal tax summary as at 31 March 2011 or a complete set of business accounts are required. Business losses are not considered in the application. The application forms can be collected from the Tasman District Council Office or any of its Service Centres. On the front of the form is a matrix showing rates in relation to income. Check this to see if you are eligible for a rebate before completing an application.
