Water restrictions level increased Matthew McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The need to conserve water is becoming more important every day, the council says, with wind, consistent high temperatures,

and increasing water demand causing rivers and groundwater levels to drop. Dennis Bush-King, convener of the Dry Weather Taskforce, says with no heavy rain relief expected, stage two water restrictions began on Monday. The district has had water restric-

tions for nine out of the last 10 years, however the council says that the main difference this year is just how late restrictions have been imposed. The lack of rain, strong winds and high temperatures play a big part. TDC community relations manager Chris Choat says that

although we have only just gone into stage two for most of Waimea this week, the outlook is not good. He says with no sign on the horizon of a let-up in the warm, dry and sometimes windy weather, there is every likelihood water restrictions will be in place for

quite a while yet. People should continue to check the council’s website and Facebook page for updates or changes to water restrictions, he says. Stage two restrictions mean that a cut of 35 per cent in permitted

Richmond sets record The hot dry weather behind the water restrictions has led to Richmond setting a new weather-related record. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research says a new all-time temperature record was set in Richmond on Monday. “The minimum temperature in Richmond only reached 24.3 deg C this morning!” they tweeted. “That is a new ALL-TIME warm minimum temperature record for the wider Nelson region. Records began there 157 years ago! The previous record was 23.7 deg C.” NIWA also noted that “Richmond climbed to a scorching 33.8° C this afternoon. [Monday]” This is wider Nelson’s warmest January temperature on record (since 1862) and 3rd-warmest overall.

Water restrictions level increased FROM PAGE 1 allocation will apply in the Upper Catchment Reservoir, Waimea West, Delta, Golden Hills and the Upper confined Aquifer zones. Water users in the Wai-Iti zone will continue to benefit from regular releases of water from the Kainui Dam, even though the amount of water released is increasing. The dam is 90 per cent full and expected to provide nine weeks of supply, according to the council. River flows at Appleby are at about 1.2 m3, and have dropped quickly (about 0.5 m3) in the last week with the dry weather and windy conditions. There is a real concern that if this weather pattern persists groundwater levels and lower river flow will continue to drop quickly.

In Richmond, Mapua – Ruby Bay, Brightwater, Wakefield, and Hope, and their rural extensions, the following restrictions apply: In residential areas watering grass and lawns is prohibited, while watering productive gardens (such as fruit and vegetables for domestic use) is allowed on alternate days, between 6pm and 8am. Things like filling or topping up pools is prohibited, while outdoor washing (vehicles and windows) is permitted using a hose with a trigger nozzle or a bucket. Dennis says that the Waimea Community Dam will avoid these restrictions in most years, noting that those water permit holders who elect not to be shareholders would be under restrictions once the dam construction is complete.

Alex finds freedom without prosthetic Jonty Dine After badly bruising his stump just six days out from a national New Zealand tournament, onearmed tennis player Alex Hunt was facing the prospect of sitting on the sidelines. The injury, the result of a recent fall, made it too painful for the Nelson-born athlete to wear his usual prosthetic arm. “I thought I might have to pull out.” However, the incident has proven to be a blessing in disguise. Alex’s condition was caused at birth after his umbilical cord wrapped around his arm, stunting its growth. Since he was two he has worn a prosthetic, and used it to play tennis as he rose through the ranks. But a day after his accident, Alex was invited to join in a game. “I didn’t have my arm to serve but they suggested I just sort of pop it up from my stump,” he says. Alex, a former Richmond Tennis Club member who now lives in California, says it went so well that he decided to train this way for the next five days. He then debuted his new technique at the tournament. “It was very nerve-wracking

walking up to serve for the first time with my arm off.” While the results didn’t go his way, the 25-year-old gained a new sense of freedom on the court. “I didn’t do too well, I actually served ok but the rest of my game was just not there, but I wasn’t expecting too much.” Having gained the confidence of performing on a national stage, Alex has now adopted the new serving style and will continue to play without his prosthetic arm. “It feels much freer, it means I can fully extend and really open up on the backhand, there isn’t the feeling of something hanging off you that’s not part of you.” With no coaching manual for Alex’s unique serve, there is a lot of trial and error going into perfecting it. “I put a wristband on with a little hole just to help grip the ball a little better, then I just pop it off the forearm.” He says he can’t believe he didn’t try it earlier. “It just didn’t cross my mind that it would be better without it.” While playing without a prosthetic is better for his game, it does attract attention. “It makes it more noticeable,

reached out to him for advice. “I am getting so many cool messages from families who tell me it has opened their eyes and they realized their kids can still live great lives.” Alex is back in Nelson for a training block as he works on his new technique with coach John Gardiner and local Paralympic specialist Claire Dallison. He says his handicap has never held him back and he always had fun with it. “I would sit in class and try and make my arm fart.” Alex was schooled at Wakefield Primary, Waimea Intermediate and Nelson College. Growing up on a farm in Wakefield, Alex says the lifestyle taught him early on that he could do anything. “I always tried to keep up with my brothers whether it was riding motorbikes or playing sport, I was always charging behind.” When picking his brothers up from training, Alex would jump on court, so it was a natural progression for him. While also a star footballer, basketballer and rugby player, Alex chose the tennis path at 14. “I had to make a decision and so I chose tennis because I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”

Thirteen-year-old youth mini stock driver Riley Eathorne, pictured holding his 16-monthold younger brother Jadyn, with mum Teila just behind him, took his race car along to Richmond’s Little People Preschool last Friday so the kids there could take a look. Riley, who is in his second year of racing, usually races at Nelson Speedway at Lansdowne Road in Richmond. He tasted a fair bit of success in his first year, coming second for his class in the Nelson club championships, third in the West Coast championships, third in the Nelson best pairs and second in the CTRA (Circle Track Racing Association) South Island event. He thought bringing the car along to Little People would be exciting for the preschoolers, as they would not have seen one up close before. Photo: Colin Williscroft

Organisers of the annual Brightwater Summer Flower Show were pleased with how last Saturday’s event turned out. Brightwater Horticultural Society president Bob Neill says, although the final numbers are still being worked out, he was pleased with the standard and the quantity of flowers on display, especially considering the recent hot, dry weather has made life difficult for flower growers. Bob says the show, which was held in the Brightwater Hall, also attracted a pleasing number of people, with a steady stream attending right throughout the day.

If you have a connection to the Richmond Bowling Club, don’t forget to head along to the club’s centennial this weekend. There is an exciting line-up of events planned over three days. The weekend begins with a tournament on Saturday, which has attracted both Richmond players and teams from other club’s in the area. On Sunday there is a centennial dinner, which will feature a number of guest speakers, while Monday is for club members only. Founded on February 4, 1919, the Richmond Bowling Club has seen many changes over the years. One of the biggest recent changes came with the sale of the two-green property at Lower Queen Street in 2012, which led to the club moving to Club Waimea, where an artificial surface was installed. That enabled bowls to be played 12 months of the year. For more information on the centenary, visit the club at 345 Lower Queen Street, or give them a call on 544-8891.

Hot conditions, warm winds fan fire risk Matt McCrorie

The Nelson Tasman area is now experiencing a prohibited fire season, with a total ban on all open air fires. This follows high temperatures, high wind and lack of rain throughout the region. The increasing heat is a big factor in fire risk at this time of the year, and this past week have seen tem-

peratures in the area and throughout the country soar. Nelson MP Nick Smith says that “we are not immune from the sort of horrific fires that have caused fatalities in places like Portugal, California and Australia. We need to heed the messages of Fire and Emergency New Zealand and our rural fire officers on fire bans and closed areas.

“I have not seen conditions this vulnerable or our fire staff so nervous since 2001. The areas of most concern are coastal forests like Rabbit Island, the eastern side of the Takaka Hill and Hira, where the Fire Service has classified the risk as very high or extreme.” Nick is particularly nervous about the need for careful risk management of the Luminate Summer Festival, with thousands of

campers gathering in the Canaan Downs this week. “We need to communicate to these festival goers the extreme fire risk and the need for them to respect the complete fire ban in this area. We want them to be safe and for them to pose no risk of fire to the adjacent forested park.” “Until we get rain or cooler temperatures, we need everybody on alert and being extra cautious.”

Hot dry weather has led to a ban on open air fires.

Baden Biggs was just 14-years-old when his father purchased the first tractor for their working farm to replace the horse-drawn ploughs. Now, 68 years later, Baden has the exact David Brown Cropmaster in his possession - fully restored and in near perfect condition. Baden has 10 vintage machines in his shed, with his David Brown taking prime position among the nine Allis-Chalmers models, each one lovingly restored to working order. His full collection will be on display at the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Show at Higgins Heritage Park this weekend which is celebrating ’80 years of David Brown’. Baden says his collection of vintage machinery began with a single plough. “I got this plough that had a broken wheel, so I advertised on the Saturday morning buy, sell and exchange on the radio and by lunchtime I had three more ploughs and still no wheel, and that was the start of it really.” As his collection began to grow, he started thinking about his Dad’s first tractor and decided to try to find it. “I knew the serial number and I knew he had traded it in on a newer David Brown but that was it. We found the next owner of it but then the trail went cold.” After years of searching, Baden had all but given up when, by word of mouth, he finally managed to track it to a paddock in Hope. “It was in a sorry state, the engine was seized and full of water, the bonnet looked like it had been used as a trampoline and was basically inside out, it was just a mess.” Little by little, with a lot of love and a fair chunk of cash, Baden put the Cropmaster back together, and this week he will drive it to Pigeon Valley to proudly display it as one of the 30 David Browns in the show. Baden became a member of the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club about 30 years ago and has been busy organising this year’s event which promises to be something special. He says the rarest item on display will be a 1918 Ruggles and Parsons tractor, of which there are only three working models in the entire world, all of which belong to the top half of the South Island of New Zealand. Entry to this weekend’s event is just $5 with children under 14 free of charge.

Nelson motorbike dealer Dave Filer gets ready for Sunday’s Shiny Side Up Bike Festival.

Festival to feature all things motorbike Jonty Dine Dozens of daredevils will descend on Nelson this weekend for the annual Shiny Side Up Bike Festival. The event is dedicated to all things motorcycle with the aim of bringing the New Zealand biker community together. Though the theme of the day will be safety, there will be a number of dangerous stunts on display. Among the talent on show will be two-time Guinness World

Record holder Jake Whitaker. At last year’s event, Jake wowed the crowd when he jumped over his wife on a motorbike. Held at Saxton Fields, Shiny Side Up will feature a number of ‘tech talks’ offering riding tips. There will also be a Shine and Show comp as well as racing, stalls and food karts. The event utilises well-known, respected personalities and experts to empower the riders with their knowledge and experiences via demonstrations, presentations and workshops.

Organiser Dave Keilty says the event, which has been running for three years, showcases everything great about motorcycling. “We make it a fun, family day, we just really want to get people to understand there is much more to motorcycling than just taking your bike out of the shed for a ride.” He says the aim of the day is for people to leave as better riders than when they arrived. The event is on Sunday from 10am to 4pm and is free entry.

Strategy will shape future of the wider regions Colin Williscroft Waimea residents are being urged to have their say on a strategy that will help shape the future of the wider Tasman and Nelson regions. The Tasman District and Nelson City councils are working together to create a future development strategy that will help them plan for and manage how and when

urban growth will go over the next 30 years. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says there is enough land available in the district for development to cover the next 10 years but beyond that there is not enough residential-zoned land in existing settlements to meet likely demand. He says that begs the question of do we keep spreading out, gob-

bling up the best horticultural land and turning it into houses, or is it better to go up, and make housing development more intensive. Consideration will also need to be given to whether developing new settlements in new locations, where land is less valuable, should be considered. Given the closeness of Richmond to Stoke and Nelson it made sense

to work with the Nelson City Council on the strategy, he says. For future development to be done in a way that suited the community, it was important people had their say now, Richard says. There are no preconceived plans or agendas influencing the strategy’s direction, he said. The strategy will sit above and provide direction to the council’s other planning tools, such as re-

source management plans and policy statements, infrastructure strategies, asset management plans, regional land transport plans and the long-term plan. Consultation documents and feedback forms are available on the council’s website – tasman. govt.nz – and at the council offices and libraries. Feedback should be received by 5pm on Monday, February 11.

Swimmer off to world champs Colin Williscroft Tasman swimmer Ethan Martin is heading to Brazil later this year to compete in the fifth World Deaf Swimming Championships. Ethan has qualified to swim in 10 events, including the 200m individual medley and breaststroke, 50m freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, and the 100m backstroke and breaststroke. His favourite events are the 200m individual medley and breaststroke. Ethan says he has always been interested in swimming but it was only four years ago that he started doing it competitively. He is in the pool training four

or five times a week training for an hour and a half each time, with three of those sessions requiring 4.30am starts. That is complemented by training circuits at the gym, which include weights. He has spent the last four weekends competing at events in Wellington or Nelson in an effort to get as much competition in as possible. Ethan was born deaf and received his first cochlear implant at the age of 10, which was followed soon after by a second one. The now 16-year-old swimmer competes for the Motueka Swimming Club. He competes against swimmers who have full hearing, so he has a special system in

place to ensure he is not at a disadvantage when the starting gun goes off. He has his mum Lisa standing behind him when he is on the starting blocks. She gives him a tap on the ankle when the starter says “on your marks” and another when the gun goes off. Ethan’s financial target to get to the world games is $30,000, which will cover return flights from Nelson to Sao Paulo, accommodation during the games, transfers and other miscellaneous costs. To support Ethan’s trip to the games, go to his givealittle page at https://givealittle. co.nz/cause/ethan-martin5th-world-swimming-cham- Ethan Martin will represent New Zealand at the World Deaf Swimming Championships in Sao Paulo. pionship

Slow down and look out for kids Matthew McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It’s a busy time on the roads at this time of the year, especially with kids heading back to school this week. With that in mind, the New Zealand Police and the Tasman District Council want to remind parents about keeping kids safe around the road. The summer holidays are long, and this means that kids are out of practice at getting to and from school. It’s a good idea for parents to sit down with their kids, as they may have forgotten some of the basics of road safety, and some children might be starting school for the first time.” Says Inspector Peter McKennie, operations manager for the National Road Policing Centre, “Help them choose the safest route to school and do some practice walks or bikes with them. It is important to remind them that any time they are crossing the road they must stop, look, and listen for any cars, motorbikes, or cyclists before they step out.” There is also a reminder for motorists to take extra care on the road at this time of the year, especially when travelling near schools dur-

ing school hours. Small increases in speed can make a big difference in stopping distance, and that can mean life or death for pedestrians. “How you drive makes the difference,” Inspector McKennie says. “The main message is simple, slow down and look out for kids,” says Megan Bell, Road safety liaison for the Tasman District Council. Reducing speed to 40km/h around schools provides an increased reaction time for drivers, meaning they can identify potential hazards and react quickly. Megan says that it is important to remember that the speed limit for passing a stationary school bus while children are getting on and off is 20 km per hour. This limit applies no matter which direction you are travelling in, and she says that this is an area of focus for the council and the police this year. “The police will be enforcing this pretty strictly this year.” Parents can do small things to try and minimize the numer of times children have to cross the road. If dropping them off to a school bus, try and do it so that they are on the same side as the bus. This will cut out the need for the child to cross the road, minimizing risk. Remember to think about visibility.

The 20km/h speed limit while passing school buses is something local police will be focusing on this school year, says road safety liaison Megan Bell.

Nelson Matters Nelson has got 2019 off to a ripper start. The Bay Dreams Festival had Nelson pumping. The Black Caps win at Saxton Field over the Sri Lankans was impressive. Nelson again won the annual sunshine crown for 2018. The summer events just keep coming with UB40 and the Nelson Buskers Festival this next week, the Aorere Enduro International mountain bike event and Nelson Food and Wine Festival in February and Bryan Adams and the Craft Beer Festival in March. We are a happening region rather than the sleepy hollow of yesteryear. These events reinforce the value of our community in investing facili-

ties and infrastructure. I have been very supportive of our councils developing facilities like Trafalgar Park, Saxton Field, the Great Taste Cycleway and Nelson Airport including securing millions in Government funding. The downside of this scorching weather is the developing drought. The Tasman Council this week ramps up it water restrictions from Stage 1 to Stage 2. The problem for orchardists and farmers is that the soil moisture monitoring by NIWA on the Waimea Plains is already showing drought conditions. There is already signs of dangerous algae growing in the Waimea River

caused by low flows and warm water. My greatest achievement last year was getting the legislation through Parliament for the Waimea Community Dam. Construction begins next month. We need nature to treat us kindly with enough rain now and for the next two summers until it is completed in 2021. I began my political work year with my annual speech to Rotary. I floated five ideas as National’s Electoral Law Spokesperson on how we can strengthen our democracy. Liberal democratic values are being tested throughout the world with the dangerous rise of extremism and increased foreign interference in

Blaze rips through sports centre A blaze ripped through the Action Indoor Sports centre last weekend. At 3.30pm on Sunday fire services from Richmond, Stoke, Wakefield and Nelson were called out to a blaze that started in the sports centre, forcing those inside to evacuate. Fire crews worked for nearly two hours to put out the fire. It is thought that the fire started in the inflatable world part of the centre

and was likely to have been created by a spark from faulty machinery. While the smoke could be seen throughout Richmond, the fire was able to be contained to the Inflatable world section of the centre, limiting the damage. Seven fire trucks were called to help contain and put out the blaze. Everyone inside the building was evacuated safely, and there were no injuries.

elections. I proposed entrenching New Zealand’s full Electoral Act so it requires a 75% majority or referendum to make changes. It is an abuse of power for parties in Government to amend electoral law so as to help them win the next election. The second change I want is to ban foreign donations. New Zealand’s democracy is ours and should not be open to manipulation by any offshore interference. A third change worth considering is a referendum on a four year term. The problem with our current short term of three years is that the first year is spent getting a handle on the job, the sec-

ond doing it and the third trying to get re-elected. I also propose tasking the Electoral Commission with running Council as well as Parliamentary elections so as to improve the participation rate and integrity of local elections. My final proposition was deferring the electoral boundary changes due to last year’s failed census not counting 400,000 people and bringing the next census forward to 2021. I love engaging with people on ideas of how we make Nelson and our country a better place. My full Rotary speech is available at Nick4Nelson.nz and I welcome any feedback. Advt.

Inspiration found in landscape St Arnaud artist Jan Thomson’s exhibition at the McKee Gallery in the Suter will be her first solo exhibition in Nelson. Jan, who has been painting for about 20 years, is these days a fulltime artist. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in places other than Nelson and has work held in private collections in New Zealand and overseas. While some artists would paint in either watercolour or acrylic, Jan paints in both, saying each has its strength. This exhibition features paintings in both water and acrylic, and how these allow her to express her love for the New Zealand landscape through her experience and views of it. “Putting together a solo exhibition of this size requires a huge amount of time and effort – I really needed to work hard to distill what and why I paint, into a cohesive body of work. “Usually what catches my eye is the effect of light and atmosphere on a subject. I sometimes enjoy noting touches of humanity in what appears to be an isolated, empty place – a musterers’ hut, ruins of an old homestead, a wind sock marking a landing strip.” The New Zealand back country can look very empty, she says, but often there are signs that people pass

design advice Renovating can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life. When renovating your home, we understand it can be hard to know where to begin. Working with the experienced team at Colourplus will ensure you achieve results you’ll love for many years to come. Offering a comprehensive design service, Trish and the team will work with you through the many options available to help you select paint colours, wallpapers, fabrics and blinds that reflect your style and budget. Even if you are renovating room by room as your budget allows, think of your home as a whole, and make sure there is flow between spaces old and new by using a complementary colour pallette. Consider the architectural style of the house, lighting, size, properties and functions of a room when considering colours and finishes. A small room will not necessarily feel larger just by painting it a light colour; natural light and ceiling height also play an important part.

Learn Something New in 2019 This is your invitation; let 2019 be the year to do something new and exciting, and tick something off your bucket list. If you have a speech to give at work, home or school, let us help you achieve your goal. Powertalk is an internationally renowned organisation with a proven record of helping hundreds of

men and women worldwide improve their communication and leadership skills, enhance their speaking and presentation skills and conquer their fear of speaking in public. There are always three speeches for everyone; the one you practised, the one you gave, and the one you wished

you had given. We provide a warm and caring environment where you can learn to express yourself clearly, voice your opinions, lead discussions, make presentations and practise speaking confidently in front of others. This year, Nelson Academy of Dance will proudly celebrate its 43rd anniversary after principal Gillian Francis established the dance school in 1977. From preschool to advanced levels, everyone is welcome at Nelson Academy of Dance which also features a dedicated boy’s dance class. Over the years, many students from the academy have gone on to enjoy successful careers in dance, including students being accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance, Whitireia and even dance companies overseas. Providing tuition in ballet and contemporary, Nelson Academy of Dance also stages an annual production that involves all pupils, helping them

gain vital stage experience, as well as holding end-of-year examinations. At the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn music. Inclusion is very important to us; which is why we offer private tuition, free lessons and affordable group options. Research shows that music improves our connection with others, stimulates brain development, improves co-ordination and language, lowers stress, builds imagination and intellectual curiosity, integrates many subjects, teaches discipline and develops self- esteem and a sense of achievement. New in 2019 we have affordable group classes in: • Singing • Piano • Electronic Music Production • Jsax • Clarinet • African drumming All classes are run by accredited and professional teachers. Here’s an awesome challenge

for 2019 – why not try your hand at a spot of home brewing? Or perhaps you’ve been experimenting with brewing for a while and already know about the amazing brewing supply store in Annesbrook called ‘League of Brewers.’ “Rather than buy your brewing products online or at bulk food stores, people can come into our shop and benefit from our expertise, which helps people get into brewing or hone their craft,” says local owner, Mike Stringer. “We brew beer to show people what’s possible at home, with tastings available, an off-license, and give-away recipes. We also run regular beginners brew training classes for people who want to kick start their brewing and make the best start at beer-making; these happen once a month, are limited to 12 people and cost $20 per session.” Get your business off to a great start in 2019 by contacting First Aid Services N.Z. Burson takes charge of Super Saloon Series Jody Scott

Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Ian Burson has had a successful past few weeks. The slimmed down Super Saloon driver picked 3rd place at the recent New Zealand championship held at Huntly Speedway, his 4th time on the podium over the past seven years. The logging contractor has not had many meetings at his home track due to the lack of numbers locally, but has had plenty of good results away as he defends his Mag and Turbo Super Cup title. Burson had the chance to extend his lead over the weekend as the series came home to Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday and then over the hill with another round in Blenheim on the Sunday. He successfully gained points in the Nelson round. After a win and a 3rd place in the heats, Burson finished 3rd in the pole shuffle. Off grid three he was able to pass and get into 2nd and challenged for the lead on a couple of restarts, but in the end had to settle

He won both his heats and the feature to stretch his points lead in the series to 105, with two rounds remaining. The other local car was a ‘Carey’s mix.’ Mark Carey had a broken car, but it was Shane who was broken and not his car, so Mark drove Shanes’ car. All was well until a drive shaft issue forced an early retirement in the final.

The best pairs Ministocks were a secret until after the final result but the two top guns around the track ended up being paired, with Raiden Hearne and Riley Eathorne taking the honours. Alicia MacLauchlan won the TQ feature as she jumps back into the Sprint car to contest the New Zealand GP in Invercargill midweek and the New Zealand title in Cromwell over the weekend. the return battle against the Grizzlies. It was their last outing for the year as drivers and machinery have become unavailable to attend the New Zealand teams title in February. With no Tigers team in Palmy it’s a major blow having both teams pull out this year. The race in Greymouth was led by Thunders’ Keightley Teece until a stalking Grizzlie struck and broke his steering with a couple

of laps to go. The Grizzlies took over the lead to win the race, squaring the series. A late punt by new Thunder driver Hamish Carter left him seeing stars and he has a 21-day standdown for concussion. Keightley Teece won his 3rd straight South Island Stock Car title in Christchurch the week earlier and he is heading to Bay Park in Tauranga to contest the New Zealand title in three weeks.

In a very low tide, 157 swimmers struggled with the slippery exposed rocks at the start and finish, but revelled in the long course of 1500m and the choppy conditions in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series on Thursday. From the start at the Nelson Yacht Club, Luke Kelly and Hayden Squance did their usual job of leading out on the first leg to the ‘dolphin’ navigation marker. They were followed by a large bunch of younger swimmers. As they headed south to a yacht moored close to the Richardson St steps, there was no change, with swimmers not wanting to commit too early. Rounding that mark and heading for the finish, the field faced choppier conditions and a slight outgoing tide. The leaders began to spread across the course as they sought the best conditions, with none finding a special advantage. They came together at the mark 50m offshore from the finish and it was an all-out sprint, with Kelly (17.23) holding off Bendi Kepess (17.25), Hayden Squance (17.26), Fergus Drummond (17.30) and Alec Swan (17.32). Oxford Bayley (17.53) just held

off the first woman, Abbey Smale (17.56). Terry Bone 18.28) finished eighth, the first of the older generation, ahead of Sophie Alexander (18.30), with Ben Marshall (18.36) rounding out the top ten. Sierra Thomas (18.56) was the third woman to finish, ahead of Bree Anderson (19.42), Zara Aydon (20.17), Christina Harris (21.20) and Lucy Barron (21.44). With many swimmers heading for Wellington for the Capital Classic, race three of the national Banana Boat Series this weekend, hopes are high for a good Nelson medal haul, with swimmers in great form well into the summer. In Thursday’s short race over about 450m, under-16 swimmers dominated, taking the first seven positions. Brooke Swan (7.31) was a clear winner from Jessica Gallagher (7.53), Mia Langley (7.59), Tom Perkins (8.05), Olivia Huata-Findlay (8.09), Corey Tremblay (8.31) and Sophia Molnar 8.33). Bruce Thomas (8.39) and Tony Munnerley (8.49) were next - the first adults to finish. Swimming continues in the series next week, with the possibility of a Tahuna Beach start. The third and final weekend of the Nelson summer dressage series was held on January 12 and 13 at Rough Island Equestrian Park, with both local and out-of-district riders competing for places in their respective classes, as well as overall summer series prizes. Many Nelson riders travelled to Christchurch last weekend for the South Island Festival of Dressage, so the final summer series event provided a fantastic opportunity to practice tests in a competition environment, complete with loudspeaker and music. Local businesses are very supportive of dressage in Nelson, so as well as rosettes and rib-

bons, riders took home some great prizes. Overall summer series results: Richmond Roast House graded series: Level One Champion – Anna Gale, Reserve Champion – Helen Bowler Level Two Champion – Rilee McMeekin, Reserve Champion – Vanessa Baxter Level Three Champion – Tracey Heywood, Reserve Champion – Katie Stadler Level 4 Champion – Meila Picard Level 5 Champion – Jan Morice Level 6 Champion – Julie Fraser Level 8/9 – Anna Terrell

Young players do well Colin Williscroft Reporter

colin@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It has been a busy but successful few weeks recently for some junior Richmond tennis players. Harry Pugh, 12, has competed in tournaments in Christchurch and Blenheim. In Christchurch he took part in the 14 years and under and 12 and under national championships, while also playing for Canterbury in a 12 and under teams event. He won the 12 and under

doubles with Aucklander Jack Chapman, and also won the mixed doubles – with Wellington’s Brooke Morgan - for the same age group. He finished third in the 12s singles, only beaten in the semifinals by his doubles partner, and 19th in the 14s singles. After that tournament he went to Blenheim and played in a tournament where he played against high-graded players from age groups higher than his own. That meant Harry was up against 16-year-olds. Although he was unseeded he

defied expectations, knocking out the first and third seeds on his way to winning the tournament. Dallas Ehau, 9, was also at the Blenheim tournament. She won the singles and doubles for girls aged 10 and under. Dallas also played in a tournament in Hamilton at the start of the year. There she won a couple of games but found it harder than it was in Blenheim. Connor Edmonds, 10, was another who played in Blenheim. He finished fourth in the doubles and seventh in singles for his age group.

The water in the bay gets warmer every day and northwesterly winds are pushing clear, blue open seawater into the area. Ideal conditions for albacore tuna and, indeed, the first ones have been caught. Traditionally, the best places to find them are a few miles off Cape Soucis (Okiwi Bay) and off Separation Point. Head out to the 40 metre mark or deeper and look for crystal clear, dark blue water. Trolling is the way to go if you can’t spot any work-ups, classic lures are hex heads and rapalas. The more lures you’ve got running and the more racket they (and the boat) make the better, tuna love the sound of possible bait fish splashing on the surface. If you hook one make sure you use a gaff, or even better, a large landing net to get them on board. Many are lost while trying to lift them in on the leader.

Kill and bleed them (this tends to make a great mess) and put them on ice immediately, the meat is delicious but spoils quickly if not treated with care. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members are counting down to their highlight of the season, the annual Big Blue Snapper Cup, taking place on the 2nd of March. The committee members have been busy finding sponsors and collecting prizes. There are over $10,000 worth of prizes to be won so far and we are far from finished. Preparations are in full swing and this year the weigh in and prize giving will take place at the Suburban Football Club in Stoke. Only club members can register for the competion but if you join now you can enter the Snapper Cup for free! Find more information on www. dawnbreakers.co.nz or on facebook. Tight lines!

STAGE 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVICE FOR URBAN RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES When Stage 2 water restrictions are in effect, urgent water conservation is needed. Urban residents and businesses must follow the restrictions outlined below. No filling or topping up pools

No watering grass or lawns

Only water flower beds, planters, shrubs and trees on alternate days, between 6pm and 8pm

Only water productive gardens (eg. Fruit and vegetables) on alternate days, between 6pm and 8pm Only wash outdoor surfaces (eg. Windows, vehicles and other outdoor surfaces) using a bucket or a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle

Stage 2 also requires a 35% cut in consented take by rural water permit holders in the zones under restriction. You can find details of these on our website. Fire risk closes forestry areas and reserves

Where should we grow from here? Nelson and Tasman are growing fast and soon we will need more houses for people to live in, places for people to work and earn a living, and spaces for relaxation, exercise and community events.

Stage 2 water restrictions are in place for the Waimea Plains. This means a 35% cut for consent holders. A sprinkler and lawn watering ban, as well as other restrictions, apply to everyone else on the Waimea Plains. Other restrictions apply to other areas. Full details and water saving tips on our website, tasman.govt.nz. Please conserve water if you live in the Waimea Plains. It’s urgent – and every drop counts. • No filling or topping up pools • No watering grass or lawns • Only water flower beds, planters, shrubs and trees on alternate days, between 6pm and 8am • Only water productive gardens (eg. fruit and vegetables) on alternate days, between 6pm and 8am • Only wash outdoor surfaces (eg. windows, vehicles and other outdoor surfaces) using a bucket or a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle

In 30 years there will need to be an extra 6300 houses in Tasman. We also need to find space for the expected 500 new businesses that will want to start up in our area. That’s a lot of new properties, so we need to start planning where they should go. The Future Development Strategy Until 11 February 2019, we’ll be consulting on the first stage in the Future Development Strategy in partnership with Nelson City Council. The strategy is a joint NelsonTasman overview of where development of future homes and businesses should take place. This is an important conversation for our community, and we want to hear your views. Please take the opportunity to play a part in planning for the future of Nelson-Tasman.

All council-owned forestry areas and reserves are closed due to extreme fire risk. These areas include Tunnicliff Forest, Kingsland Forest, Richmond Hills. Please check with the rural fire service for other non-council owned forest areas. Stay safe. Motorua Rabbit Island and Rough Island tracks are closed, but Ken Beck Drive is open to the public for beach access. Tasman's Great Taste Trail is also open. All wood-fired BBQs in reserves are closed, but some gas BBQs still remain open.

Clean, Check, Dry to stop the spread of didymo With the summer holiday season now underway, it’s important to remember to clean equipment between waterways to avoid the spread of unwanted freshwater pests including the invasive alga didymo. Unwanted freshwater pests such as didymo, lake snow, and hornwort pose a serious threat to our rivers, streams and lakes. Once in a waterway they can disperse rapidly and destroy the environmental, recreational and aesthetic values of our rivers and lakes.

Look for the Good Wood tick

If you are moving between rivers or lakes, please check, clean and dry any equipment that has come into contact with the water. Some freshwater pests are microscopic and can be spread by a single drop of water. Even if you can’t see the danger you could be spreading it.

Summer is the best time to buy and store your firewood, so you have dry, seasoned wood ready for next winter.

Check: Before leaving the river or lake, check for weeds and debris, and leave it behind.

When you choose a Good Wood supplier, you’re opting for a trusted source of dry firewood that will burn well, helping to keep your home warmer and our air cleaner.

Clean: Clean all items for at least one minute with a five percent solution of biodegradable dishwashing liquid – about a tablespoon of detergent per 250 millilitres.

Head to www.tasman.govt.nz/link/good-wood to find a list of local suppliers.

You will need to soak absorpent materials such as lifejackets, wetsuits and boots for longer to allow thorough saturation.

Find details for all of our current consultations at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

Enter the Best Little Woodshed competition Is your woodshed a thing of beauty? Or are you considering building a new one? Enter the Best Little Woodshed competition and be in to win prizes including vouchers for firewood, chimney cleans and woodburner safety checks. More info and to enter, see our website tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

Dry: Drying kills didymo but even slightly moist items can harbour didymo and other microscopic pests for months. Make sure the item is completely dry to the touch, inside and out, then leave dry for at least another 48 hours before you use it again. Find out more For more information about didymo and freshwater pests visit www.mpi.govt.nz/check-clean-dry.

Maritime events Temporary reservations and speed limit uplifting for maritime events.

Take tops off empty bottles before recycling Please remove your bottle tops before placing empties into the yellow recycling bin. All lids go into the general rubbish, as in most cases the material used for a plastic bottle is not the same as the lid. If we take a shampoo bottle as an example, the bottle itself may be HDPE or PET and the lid Polypropylene (PP). With the lid still attached, it’s harder to compress the bottle as the air is prevented from escaping. Also, before the bottle can be recycled, the lid needs to be removed. It’s also important to remove lids from glass bottles.

The Tasman District Council Harbourmaster has or may soon grant authorisations for the following events. Due to navigation safety requirements, water users not involved in these events may be excluded from defined areas during activities. Notices will be placed at nearby access points during these events. Further details for these and any new events may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/maritime-events. Event Date
