Jonty Dine The Mako were crowned kings of provincial rugby on Saturday, 13 years after the franchise was born. In what could be considered one of New Zealand rugby’s greatest rags to riches story, the Mako have risen to the pinnacle of our provincial game after fears it may fold just a few years ago. Trafalgar Park was transformed into a sea of red and blue on Saturday, the biggest crowd it had seen since the inaugural All Blacks test in 2018. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the win is the culmination of years of hard work behind the scenes. “It’s an amazing result, they really were a credit to themselves and the region tonight.” He says the city threw its support behind the side with thousands pouring into Trafalgar Park to witness history. “This is the best provincial competition in the world and this is the biggest weekend the Tasman Union has had,” Tony says. However, the win may well have been the last hurrah for All Blacks’ veteran Wyatt Crockett. “It’s unreal for a province like this. It’s been bubbling away for a few years now and to get to the top of New Zealand provincial rugby is something very, very special.” Skipper David Havili was elated following the final whistle. “It’s a lot of emotion, to finally get one, the feeling I have right now for the region and the boys is something I can’t explain.” Photo: Shuttersport.
