Jonty Dine The Mako were crowned kings of provincial rugby on Saturday, 13 years after the franchise was born. In what could be considered one of New Zealand rugby’s greatest rags to riches story, the Mako have risen to the pinnacle of our provincial game after fears it may fold just a few years ago. Trafalgar Park was transformed into a sea of red and blue on Saturday, the biggest crowd it had seen since the inaugural All Blacks test in 2018. Tasman Rugby Union CEO Tony Lewis says the win is the culmination of years of hard work behind the scenes. “It’s an amazing result, they really were a credit to themselves and the region tonight.” He says the city threw its support behind the side with thousands pouring into Trafalgar Park to witness history. “This is the best provincial competition in the world and this is the biggest weekend the Tasman Union has had,” Tony says. However, the win may well have been the last hurrah for All Blacks’ veteran Wyatt Crockett. “It’s unreal for a province like this. It’s been bubbling away for a few years now and to get to the top of New Zealand provincial rugby is something very, very special.” Skipper David Havili was elated following the final whistle. “It’s a lot of emotion, to finally get one, the feeling I have right now for the region and the boys is something I can’t explain.” Photo: Shuttersport.

Yes, I was in Okoroie when the Kaikoura one struck. I woke up with the bed shaking and the dog growling. When it stopped, I went back to sleep.
We were visiting Christchurch during the first earthquake in a first-floor bedroom. We watched all the chimneys shake; it was very unpleasant.
I was 7 years old and we lived in Canvastown when the bed started shaking so much. I ran into my brothers’ room, but they were asleep.
Yes, we were in Christchurch during the first after shock. It woke us at about 4am and we went into the street, it was disconcerting.

Richmond residents suffer with congestion Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Traffic congestion on Champion Road at the round-a-bouts on Salisbury Road and Hill Street is becoming a problem for people who live in the area, especially during rush hours. Over the past few years, the volume of traffic has increased, and it can now take up to 20 minutes for a driver to exit from Champion Road into Salisbury Road. This is a big concern for local resident Christa Brown. “A lot of the traffic on Hill Street is using this as a by-pass and there is Garin College, the entrance to the Velodrome, the new Summerset Retirement Village on Hill Street North and the numerous subdivision projects which will add further to the volume of traffic,” says Christa.
Christa Brown lives up Champion Rd and she is concerned about the traffic at the round-abouts’ on Salisbury Rd and Hill St. Photo: Bruno Saia. “Worse still, there is to be a Countdown on the corner of Salisbury Road – it beggars belief that the council has approved
such a commercial development in a residential area, especially taking into consideration the number of schools,” she says.
The new Countdown store is expected to be built in the corner between Champion Road and Salisbury Road by early 2021
and the Tasman District Council (TDC) says it is working to improve the transit in that spot. A Countdown spokesperson says that the company is working closely with the council around timing to deliver the store for the local community as soon as it can. “We’ve had some great feedback from the community about the new store already and will be able to update people over the next year as this comes to life.” TDC transport manager Jamie MacPherson says the approval for the new supermarket to operate at the Champion/Salisbury site was conditional on the intersection being upgraded prior to the supermarket opening. “Upgrading of the intersection, involving the addition of turning lanes on Champion and Salisbury approaches, and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, is planned to begin in 2020.”

Police treating disappearance of Jessica Boyce as homicide Staff Reporter Police are now treating the disappearance of 27-year-old Jessica Boyce as a homicide. The change in the line of investigation happened after they executed two search warrants, one at a property in Canvastown and another in Wharanui, in relation to the missing person investigation. There have also been more than 40 staff deployed on the operation, from the wider Tasman district and also brought in from Canterbury district. Jessica has been missing for seven months, with the last confirmed sighting of her in Renwick, Marlborough on Tuesday March 19, when she was driving a red Holden Rodeo ute. The ute was found at the Lake Chalice car park in the Richmond Ranges three days later on Friday 22 March.
Jessica Boyce, 27, has been missing since March. Photo: Supplied. Police area investigation manager Detective Senior Sergeant Ciaran Sloan says they now believe the ute was deliberately left in the car park in an effort to mislead the investigation. It was seized for forensic examination. Police investigators have iden-

tified a number of other locations of interest in the Marlborough area, as a result of enquiries. “Additional resources from the Tasman and Canterbury Police Districts have been deployed to Marlborough to assist with the investigation, which remains a priority for Police,” says Ciaran, Police are not in a position to go into further detail on the investigation at this point, except to say it is ongoing. They are committed to supporting Jessica’s family throughout this investigation, and we extend our sincere condolences to them following this serious development. Police again ask that anyone with information about Jessica’s disappearance - no matter how insignificant they may think it might be - contact Marlborough Police on 03 578 5279, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Insane sales increase for gold medal sausage Bruno Saia In the last edition of the Waimea Weekly, you read that the ‘Brisket, Aged Cheddar and Jalapeno’ sausage made by Raeward’s Fresh Richmond won gold in the Gourmet Beef category of this year’s Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition. The sausage had an insane sales increase after the publicity of the gold medal win. “The sales have been huge of the gold medal sausages. They
were popular prior to winning the award, but that’s gone just crazy now,” says owner/operator Gareth Caldwell. “We are sending orders as far as Oakland and down to Christchurch. People are just willing to try them. And the local community getting out and supporting it and purchasing it, which is cool. Excellent feedback. Everyone that tries it really enjoys it and lots of people mention that they have seen us in the article,” he says.

Do you know anyone who has been affected by family violence? Have you experienced it yourself? Do you know what to do in a situation like that if you come across it? The first step is to be able to talk about it. And that’s what Nelson’s Community Champions are here for. Working with Safe Families Nelson Richmond, the champions are a group of people in our community trained to have the skills and information to suc-
cessfully manage conversations around family violence or managing anger. “We hope that this will contribute to reducing family violence in our community and also promoting ‘it is ok to ask for help,” says coordinator Haidee Channings. “If someone comes and speaks to you, that is a very brave step to be talking to someone.” Social worker and a community champion Sarah Lim started with the group in July and she is available to talk to anyone who contacts her. “You have to be

non-judgemental, patient and open,” she says. “Allowing them to tell you their story and what they’ve been through. Listening to what they have to say and gauging from your experience know how to help them.” Posters showing photos of all community champions will be put up in Richmond and Nelson in November so that the community can identify them. You can get more information from Haidee at Te Korowai Trust, 398 Main Road Stoke or by the phone: 03 547 5958 Ext 716.

Tasman Bay Cruising Club and the Tasman Bay Guardians teaming up to make our shores better and cleaner places. Photo: Supplied.
Taking care of our Tasman Bay Staff Reporter Tasman Bay is an incredible ecosystem that we are all connected to. Sustainer of life and playground to many. That’s what the event ‘Our Backyard - Our Playground’, held by Tasman Bay
Cruising Club and the Tasman Bay Guardians, is about. Stew Robertson of conservation group Tasman Bay Guardians will present on the ecology of the bay, the pressure it’s under and the collaborative work the Guardians are doing to help restore
the Mauri (life force) of the bay. Expect a compelling presentation of life beneath the waves, as he opens your eyes to the state of the bay. Tasman Bay Guardians are a charitable Trust, delivering education programmes, biodiversity outcomes and community
collaboration in the Top of The South. In the first year the Trust has delivered programs to 790 students through 16 schools with demand increasing daily. They also put 144 community members through a snorkelling experience day at Cable Bay earlier
this year. Stew is also the founder of Abel Tasman EcoTours and spends his days sharing the natural world with locals and international visitors alike. The event will be on 31st Oct at 5:30pm. The Tasman Bay Cruising Club is at 11 Cross Street, Port Nelson.
Saving Foxhill’s historic hall and have a fun dog day afternoon Susan Johnson A small group of community members in Foxhill are trying
to raise the profile of their historic hall. Since the local school closed, they feel the area has lost its focal point. To start the
ball rolling the committee have joined with the Nelson Ark on Sunday the 3rd of Nov from 2 to 4pm. Bring the family for an af-
ternoon of fun, even your wellbehaved dog on a lead. There will be demonstrations by the Ark trainers. The event will go
ahead if it rains but will be held in the hall and the public won’t be able to take their dogs inside. 658 Wakefield Kohatu Highway.

Blackenbrook awarded trophy for its Pinot Blanc Staff Reporter

The ‘gold of golds’ Champion Trophy Medal was awarded to Nelson Tasman winery Blackenbrook Vineyard for their first-ever vintage of Pinot Blanc at this year’s New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition in the ‘Other Aromatic’ category. Held at the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Canterbury, the New Zealand Aromatic Wine Competition, in its 16th year, focuses on aromatic wines, such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Viognier, and other varieties, including Muscat, Verdelho, Arneis, Rose and Sauvignon Gris, made in an aromatic
style from any internationally recognised region. Blackenbrook’s 2019 Pinot Blanc was launched only last month, quickly receiving 4.5 stars from Michael Cooper MA ONZM, author of the annual New Zealand Wines: Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide. Blackenbrook owners Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach are thrilled at the reception their newest wine has received. “Balance and clean varietal characters in our wines are really important to us,” Daniel says. “It’s always rewarding to receive recognition for the hard work our vineyard team and family have put into creating our signature wines, like the Pinot Blanc. With only
11 hectares of Pinot Blanc grapes planted throughout New Zealand, mostly used for blending, we knew it would be a challenge to introduce an unfamiliar wine to Kiwis. “And yet, they have embraced it. Sales have been brisk, the feedback from customers very positive, and now this wonderful Trophy Medal – all in a few weeks, what an amazing ride! After many years of planning, tending the young vines and anticipating the new style it is gratifying to see people’s eyes light up when they take their first sip.” Read more about how Blackenbrook created its latest wine, the 2019 Pinot Blanc, on its website: www.blackenbrook.co.nz.

A culture of care at Riding for the Disabled Susan Johnson Right up the top of Champion Road in Richmond is the Richmond branch of Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Three staff and 40 volunteers care for 13 horses and help 80 riders achieve the maximum benefit out of their rides. Spending time with the horses increases the inde-
pendence and self-confidence of the riders as well as the physical benefits of increased muscle tone, improved balance and reduced stress levels. Ella, whose favourite horse is Kermit, has been going to the centre for two years. “I’m hoping to ride him on my own more without the lead rein and do harder things like go over the poles” she says. Ella’s mum Steph-
anie Curnow believes the riding has reduced Ella’s anxiety levels. “I have seen her confidence levels increase and the skills she has learnt here at the RDA have translated into her everyday life,” she says. Jake, another young rider at the RDA likes Spice because, “he’s fun to ride, cheeky, warm and soft,” he says.
Head coach Tina Angus says, “we’ve worked hard to create and maintain a culture of caring from every person that comes on site to help us.” RDA was introduced to New Zealand in 1962 by the president of the NZ Pony Club Association Tony Atchison, from knowledge he gained in England. The centre is having a fund raiser
on the 2nd of November from 10am to 2pm at 169 Champion Road. Gold coin entrance. A great day out for the whole family, there will be pony rides, RDA riding displays, raffles, a bouncy castle and two professional horse displays. Please check the Richmond RDA FB page and the local radio station if it’s wet for a cancellation.

Just a thought... Ian Smith Reverend, Holy Trinity Anglican I’ve been thinking… We, Richmond/Appleby Anglicans, have been running a Spring School to help us develop a better skill at listening. We have looked at ‘Listening to others’, which addressed why we need to listen and what blocks our capacity to hear what others are saying. Last weeks session really got me thinking though. We, under the expert tutelage of Fr Fergus Cappie, who worked for many years under the Bishop of London with the Inter-Faith Dialogue Commission, which was set up to better understand the diverse faith traditions erupting in London as a result of Britain being part of the European Community. We too have many faith traditions in our communities, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim being some of the major ones, and this is what got me thinking… We are, each in our own way, trying to create secure, love filled places for people in our groups to
open themselves to each other and to the love of God, which then fills us with the capacity to reach out (in this Love), to our neighbourhoods with acts of generous kindness. So, I’m thinking, what is stopping this happening? Fr Cappie raised the Christian colonial issue the first missionaries to New Zealand brought with them; “There is no salvation outside the Church”, and this still is the sticking point. As long as we listen to the idea that there is only salvation in belonging to a group, then that greater love of God that is everywhere and cannot EVER be contained by any one, is sidelined. The ‘Group’ becomes all important and the love of God which wants to bind us all together becomes a secondary issue or one we might allocate to ‘heaven’! On Monday the 4th November we will be looking at ‘Listening to the World’ and on the 11th ‘Listening to God’. Anybody is most welcome to attend these talks being held in our new Parish Community Centre at Holy Trinity Church. Arohanui

Richmond’s Dan Fisher has completed a stellar first season by winning the New Zealand Off-road class one title at the national championships at Napier. Fisher in his Razorback twinseater powered by a 6000cc Chev V8, added the NZ1 to his North Island title from earlier in the year. Fisher says he had the goal to be a national champion when he purchased the car in Australia. “I think when I told the guy that’s what I wanted to achieve there were a few sniggers behind my back but I’m a competitive person and I like to set big goals,” he says. Fisher did not have it all his own way over the weekend,
basically drove it like I stole it, I never looked back once and we managed to pull it off.” Fisher says his body was bruised and sore from a physically demanding weekend behind the wheel but the result had motivated him to be more competitive next year. “To be honest, I was planning to have a quiet year next year but having the NZ1 on my car has probably changed that.” Racing will start again in February with the nationals being held in Kurow in 2020. “This is a growing sport and the Class 1 fields are getting more and more competitive so I’ll have to be on my game again.”
ARTFUL CREATIONS A wearable creation show for all ages
Tasman Mako crowned champions Staff Reporter The Tasman Mako have made history winning the Mitre 10 Cup premiership for the first time in its 13-year existence. The Mako held off a ferocious challenge from the Wellington Lions 31-14 to claim its maiden title in an enthralling final in front of a packed house at Trafalgar Park. Tasman drew first blood inside the first two minutes following an offensive penalty and Hunt went back to back after five as the hosts dominated early territory and possession. Wellington goal-kicker Jackson Garden-Bachop pulled his first two attempts before finally putting the visitors on the board with his third opportunity. After Tasman regathered the kickoff, Will Jordan struck, running a superb line off a Hunt switch, slicing through the Lions defence and streaking in under the bar to push the hosts to a 13-3 lead. Hunt stretched the advantage to 13 with a long range shot at goal before his opposite pulled it back, however Tasman surged further ahead as the Lions made a crucial mistake from the kick-off, skipper David Havili finishing off a Hunt line break to the delight of the packed Trafalgar Park crowd. Wellington’s first try then came through powerhouse prop Alex Fidow as he monstered his way through the Mako defence from a breakdown close to the line. Tasman dodged a missile right on the brink of halftime as a wayward pass from the base gave the Lions
a golden opportunity to score but the visitors were unable to cash in and the Mako managed to survive until halftime with a 23-14 advantage. Hunt reasserted the momentum for the Mako with his fourth penalty goal as the intensity kicked up a notch. The pressure got to Lions skipper Du’Plussis Kirifi who committed a cardinal sin by taking out Finlay Christie and was lucky to escape a yellow card, but Hunt was unable to take advantage as he produced his worst kick of the season, sailing well wide. The Lions then butchered another chance to reduce the gap but a fortuitous knock on saw Tasman again escape thanks to a desperate Will Jordan cover tackle. Tasman then survived 17 phases as the visitors threw everything at the Mako, the hosts showing incredible fortitude on defence. Veteran Wyatt Crockett made an emphatic impact from the bench, forcing two crucial turnovers for his side to keep the Mako in control as the clock wound down. Tasman maintained control in the final ten as Havili sent a penalty which would have sealed the win wide of the posts. However, the result was never in doubt as Tasman showed plenty of composure in the final minutes and closed out its perfect, unbeaten season with a Premiership title. Jordan capped off a sensational result for the region with his second on the back of a superb break by Alex Nankivell as the crowd began to celebrate.
Tasman’s ascendance to the top rung of the New Zealand provincial ladder should come as no surprise to those who have followed the team’s fortunes in recent years. Their star has been steadily rising, with the prospect of a breakC
M
through NPC premiership title seemingly only a matter of time. Scorers: Tasman 31 (Jordan 2, Havili tries Hunt 4 pens, 2 cons). Wellington 14 (Fidow tries, Garden-Bachop 3 pens).

Wood Chopping is a sport that requires eye hand coordination, strength, fitness, dedication and a lot of technique and all of this will be on display at the Golden Edge Nelson A&P Show 2019. “We just chop it in half,” says Dave McEwen, President of the Nelson Axemen’s club making light of what is a highly skilled sport, with comradery stronger than any other sport he has been involved in; when explain-

ing what wood chopping is all about. “As axeman, we’ve been getting a lot of support from the A&P Association this year, which is great. We will be bringing a New South Wales Team to compete against the South Island. It will be a 3-test series. That is huge for Nelson A&P and great for wood chopping in the South Island too,” says Dave. The 125th Nelson A&P Show is going to be on the 23 and 24 November at Richmond Showgrounds.
Axeman Ray Biggs says “brute strength will get you so far, but technique will win out at the end of the day”. Photo: Bruno Saia.

Brightwater’s Mt Heslington Rd hosted the ‘King of the Hill’ this weekend. Nelson rider Ethan Bruce claimed the title of ‘The King of the Hill’. Over 40 riders defied gravity and at least 500 people were watching it over the course of the day. “I would like to say thanks to the landowners and that we are looking forward to doing it bigger and better next year,” says Motocross Events Nelson’s Dan Shallcrass, after running the event for the second year. “I’d also like to thank our sponsors MTF Finance, Filco Farm & Sport, Raeward Fresh, Ewing Poultry and Nelson Marlborough Food Group,” he says. They promised that the first section to Mt Roskill would cost $1.4 billion and be completed by 2021. Labour has completely dropped the ball on this flagship infrastructure project. The timeline now has construction not beginning until 2021 with possible completion in 2025. No design has been completed. No route has been determined. No contractor has been selected. Minister Jones says the price tag has blown out four-fold to $6 billion. The business case is not due until next February. NZ First is now questioning whether it will ever proceed. The incompetence is making Jacinda Ardern’s promise look foolish.

Nelson matters
This Government has just passed its second birthday. It was an unusual birth for a new government in 2017. Jacinda Ardern had been Labour leader for a few weeks. The party with the most votes and the most MPs did not get into Government for the first time in New Zealand history. It is a good time to compare promise with performance, particularly with the PM calling 2019 the year of delivery. Jacinda Ardern’s first big promise announced days after becoming leader was Labour’s plan for light rail in Auckland. The commitment was made with great fanfare alongside Mayor Phil Goff and Transport Spokesperson Phil Twyford.

Everybody knows New Zealand has to get more infrastructure built. That’s why National put $1 billion into electrifying Auckland trains, $1.6 billion into the Waterview tunnel, $1.2 billion into Transmission Gully in Wellington, $1.3 billion into the rebuild of Kaikoura’s SH1 and locally the $40 million Ruby Bypass. The difference is that National got stuff done. The fiasco over Auckland’s Light Rail is Kiwibuild 2.0. Jacinda Ardern promised 100,000 affordable homes over a decade - a 1,000 in the first year - 5,000 in the second -10,000 in the third year and 12,000 every year thereafter. The idea that the Government could

build homes much faster than building companies and much more cheaply has become a joke. 6,000 Kiwibuild houses should have been completed by now but there are only 217. Most are not new but have been bought off developers. 100 are unsold because they are too expensive, poorly designed or in the wrong place. Labour promised Nelson would get “at least 1,000” Kiwibuild homes. We have got none and none are planned. In contrast hundreds of homes have been built locally in National’s Special Housing Areas. The Homestart grants scheme I launched in April 2015 has since helped 1800 Nelsonians
buy their first home. Labour has also broken a long list of other promises like increasing police numbers by 1800, planting a billion trees, converting the Govt car fleet to electric and removing parental donations in all schools. Last week they also dropped their commitment on climate change over agricultural emissions. Helen Clark and John Key went to great lengths to ensure they only promised what could be done. They were both very firm on ensuring Ministers delivered. The Government is terminal if it keeps up this incompetence and failure to deliver on what was promised. Advt.
