The trout season begins tomorrow and thousands of Kiwis will be heading to their favourite river or lake for the much-awaited start of the new fishing season. Jacob Lucas from Fish & Game says, “Every river you cross, or lake for that matter, is an opportunity to catch some of our world-renowned trout, and there’s no better time to hit the road and see our wonderful country - fishing rod in hand, of course.”
A busy stretch of the State Highway 6, south of Nelson, will be closed in the last week of the school holidays. Motorists will be looking at a longer journey, with the 30km section of SH6 between Motupiko and the Kawatiri Junction closed off for nearly two weeks by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, from Monday October 5 to Saturday October 17. A 62km detour will be in place. Heading south, turn left at the Belgrove Tavern, and continue along Korere-Tophouse Rd, through Kikiwa, past St Arnaud and on to SH63, before coming back on to SH6 at the Kawatiri Junction. NZTA says that the detour route is approved for HPMV/ 50MAX vehicles (high productivity motor vehicles/ large trucks and trailers). “Waka Kotahi’s Tasman Journeys highways maintenance team needs to upgrade two culvert pipes badly damaged in the Glenhope storm in November last year,” says Andrew James, system manager Waka Kotahi for Nelson and Marlborough. Along with the culvert replacement, guardrail will be replaced, as well as shoulder widening, pavement repairs, water channel clearing, and cleaning of signs undertaken to make sure the road is safe for summer. Andrew says that members of the highway maintenance team agreed with the Murchison and Districts community board on the timing of the closure, and when it would have the least impact. “This included consideration of the closure’s

I think there’re lots of things to do for the youth, particularly in this (Tasman) area. Are the youth not more interested in their smartphones than doing activities though?
I think there needs to be some kind of initiatives out in the community to help parents and their children discover what all the options are to keep children active.
School’s a big networking hub, after that it gets a bit harder. I definitely think people need to know that going out drinking is not the only option, there’s so much more. ..
There’s definitely a need for some kind of initiatives to provide ideas. Introducing things like volunteering would be a great way to get people active.
SH6 closed sensibly from PAGE 1 effects on rural school children who attend school in Murchison each day and also the effects upon Murchison businesses during the school holidays,” he says. Andrew says that the compromise that was agreed with the community board was to include one week of the school holidays along with one week in term time. “We thank all drivers for taking care on the detour route into St Arnaud and to everyone for continuing to support Murchison and their local retailers as much as possible.” State Highway 6 will be closed fully 24/7 for traffic between Lamb Valley Road and Kawatiri Junction for up to a fortnight. Although work will be underway daytimes only, the highway will not be safely passable at night at the culvert sites outside those times.
Snowfall blankets Richmond Hills Jacqui Rawson Snow reached record low-levels on the hills above Richmond last night. Several fronts leading up to
yesterday were joined by another in the early hours, pulling colder tempatures behind it so that what was to have been rain, turned into snow as it fell. The Richmond Hills at about 200
metres above sea level were perfectly positioned to receive the MetService’s prediction of snow to that level. It’s several years since Richmond had snow on its hills and even longer for it to
be such a heavy fall. Heavy snowfall also grounded flights in parts of southern New Zealand with Rakiura/Stewart Island receiving snow on their beach.

A&P Show goes ahead Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Richmond’s A&P show will go ahead, organisers say. Despite most A&P shows around the country not taking place, the Richmond show organisers are proud to be ensuring the fun and tradition will live on. “Not having our show has never been an option,” said show manager Annette Robinson. If the country goes back to level 2 lockdown the show will be limited to contestants and members only. “But as it stands now, the show will most assuredly go on.” Not only going ahead, there’ll
be new competitions held for the first time. Things like an Excavation Operator Competition where operators compete to showcase their skills. Things like painting a sign or lifting a teapot and pouring into a teacup – all with their digger. Another new event is the Mounted Games, competition on horseback, showcasing speed and agility where peers compete in laneways. There will also be a reduction in the cost at the gate along with other changes to the layout. All kids’ activities will now be easier to find, taking pride of place at the front of the grounds, things like the animal
barn, the Town & Country Vet animal nursery, and the woodchoppers. The lack of other A&P shows around the country also benefits the local area as the competitors not able to compete elsewhere in New Zealand are now flocking here. And there’s always the trades exhibitions to check out businesses old and new. The A&P organisation encourages any tradespeople who are keen to have crowds come and check out their business, to get in touch with Annette as there are currently sites available specifically for trades displays. Contact Annette at: manager@ richmondpark.nz or give her a ring on 544 7181.

Pak’nSave pay offer ‘unrealistic’ Matt McCrorie Pak’nSave employees are growing increasingly frustrated with a lack of bargaining with Richmond management, and FIRST Union organiser Ross Lampert says that the employer is trying to undermine the process. After a meeting last week, union members have decided to go to mediation bargaining. “When you reach an impasse, either side can call for mediation. There’s a third-party mediator who will try to get the parties to come together.” Mediation hasn’t worked in the past, but Ross says he hopes it will be helpful. Pak’n Save employee and union delegate Jenny Wells says the new offer is below what Pak’nSave is currently paying. “They give us an offer like that knowing we aren’t going to approve. It’s simply a delay tactic. They are trying to undermine the
process and drive people away from the union”. “It’s a way to undermine the collective barraging agreement. If they come to an agreement which pays less than what they currently pay, then what is the incentive for anyone to join the union,” Ross says. Jenny says that the reaction from union members at Pak’n Save Richmond has varied through ‘disappointed, deflated, and outraged.’ “People are feeling really angry about that kind of offer.” Jenny and her fellow employees are seeking a collective agreement that will see higher wages, additional sick days, and long service recognition. “They continue to hold the line that the minimums are acceptable. The only movements have been when the Government has changed the law, like doing away with 90-day trials. That was part of our initial bargaining attempt, to get rid of that,” Jenny says.
Pak’n Save Richmond employees Gavin Closey and Jenny Wells are frustrated with their employer trying to ‘undermine’ their bargaining process. Photo: Matt McCrorie. Ross says that if supermarket workers are essential workers, they should be getting an essential pay. “Why aren’t they getting paid a wage that reflects their value.” Supermarkets made record profits through the Covid-19 lockdown.
“They were paying their staff 10 per cent extra in level 4, because of pressure from the union, it’s a couple of bucks extra, and they should make that permanent. Everybody would be pretty happy, and they have the ability to do that. They’re making money hand Filco’s carpark was the start of the Top of the South’s Harley Riders rescue helicopter ride last Saturday. Over 200 riders turned up and over $3500 was raised by the event. The money will be donated to the rescue helicopter to meet ongoing costs in providing the necessary service. Although organised by the Harley club, bikes of all makes attended and the large turnout reflected the good weather on the day. Photo: Steve Page.
Nelson Matters
I announced on Monday with leader Judith Collins, National’s commitment and timetable to build a new, larger and safer hospital for Nelson. The current hospital is deficient in three ways. Our population is growing and aging and the current 149 beds are insufficient. The main buildings are over 50 years old and not of the standard we need for patients and our dedicated doctors and nurses. The hospital is also earthquake prone. It is unacceptable that we would not have a functional hospital in the event of a major quake. I rewrote the earthquake-prone building laws as Minister of Build-
ing in 2017 in response to the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes. The required seismic assessments done in 2018 on Nelson Hospital show the Percy Burnett tower block is 33% of standard, the George Manson tower block and operating theatres are only 22% and the chimney tower just 20%. The law requires replacement or upgrading by 2028. This time frame will not be met if we do not get started soon. The current government has just announced millions to relocate MPs and Ministers offices in response to seismic issues with Bowen House at Parliament. This is a much newer building and has a much higher
rating than Nelson Hospital. Our hospital should have been given priority. Constructing a new Nelson Hospital is a massive task. It will be Nelson’s biggest ever building project. It is complicated by having to maintain health services throughout the rebuild. We need to get the detail right. National in the last Government built new hospitals in Rotorua, Waikato, North Shore, Golden Bay, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Burwood. We started construction in 2016 of Greymouth and Christchurch’s main hospital and in 2017 approved a new hospital for Dunedin. These three have all fallen
over fist.” The wage of employees at Countdown supermarkets who have been employed for over a year is being raised to $21.15 on the 28 September, as a result of collective bargaining. “They are getting a much fairer deal.” Jenny says she has approached Nelson MP Nick Smith for support but was told he doesn’t get involved in workplace disputes. She also approached Labour candidate for Nelson Rachel Boyack, who said that she has written to owner Andrew Howard imploring him to return to the bargaining table. “These are essential workers who deserve a decent wage, especially given the profits supermarkets have been making during Covid.” Ross says they need the community to get behind workers, and that anyone interesting in offering their support should contact ross.lampert@firstunion.org.nz A woman camped outside the Ministry of Social Development in Queen Sreet last night. The woman, ‘Aunty’, says that she is trying to raise awareness around the lack of emergency support for women in the Nelson and Tasman regions. She said that while she was camped outside the Ministry of Social Development and Te Piki Oranga, she was not protesting either of those organisations specifically, and that it was just a warm place to sleep. She says that while there is a men’s shelter in Nelson, there is no emergency facility for women who may be in immediate danger, and she wants to raise awareness.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
behind schedule. The lessons from these projects is that they take years to plan and build. National’s timetable for a new Nelson Hospital is to consult with the community and hospital staff in 2021, do detailed design in 2022, complete consenting and contractor selection in 2023 and to complete the new hospital by 2027. It is tight but doable. It is a good time to be investing in infrastructure. National’s commitment is to rebuild on the current site. This is because it is well located close to the central city and other important services. There are no other large suitable sites available. There are also some assets on the existing site
that can be retained. A key issue to resolve in the design stage will be improve parking and maybe include a parking building. I was disappointed in the Nelson Labour candidate’s negative response to National’s hospital announcement. These huge projects often span different governments. I would welcome a similar commitment to Nelson from Labour. I will work with our Health Board and across all political parties to get the right result for Nelson. My objective is a new hospital that will meet our region’s health needs for the next half century and I will work with whomever to achieve it. Advt.

Rescue Helicopter starts annual appeal costs for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. “We’re now a major sponsor of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust and proud to have the NBS brand on the nose of the chopper,” Tony says. “We regularly hear stories from the crew and are extremely impressed at their expertise and commitment to the job, regardless of the situation. It is not a job for the faint-hearted, they are amazing. “The community has always shown fantastic support of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, and we hope this year’s appeal is no different.” NMRHT general manager Paula Muddle says that it’s ‘fantastic’ to have NBS on board and championing the appeal month. “It is fantastic to have another organisation supporting us like this,” she says. “I hope the community is able to get behind us this year so we can keep up our work.”
Matt McCrorie Reporter

Lockdowns and Covid-19 have meant that the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust is down nearly $150,000. But while fundraising opportunities may have dried up this year, rescue missions have not. To the end of August this year, the regions only resuce chopper service has flown 327 missions. On average, the trust flies over 500 missions every year. This year, the helicopter has averaged 10 missions per week, with an average cost of $3,500 per mission. As at September, the crew has played a critical role in saving 326 lives. The charitable trust receives government funding, but only enough to cover around 40 per cent of their annual operational costs. NMRHT general manager Paula Muddle says that Covid-19 has meant that a lot of their fundraising opportunities disappeared this year. “We just couldn’t do events.” Now, local banking institution NBS are kicking off the Rescue Helicopter Appeal this October.
Chief crewman Ernie Bryant says that the Rescue Helicopter team operate in all sorts of environments over the 500+ missions they carry out each year. Photo: Supplied. The month-long appeal aims to give a significant boost to the the trust’s funding and shine a light on the lifesaving work that the Rescue Helicopter Trust does. NMRHT chief crewman Paul (Ernie) Bryant says ensuring the crew is safe is extremely important. “It’s not a job for everyone, hanging out with a winch 150 feet above ground,” he says. “We can be called to help anywhere, ending up in all sorts of environments, day and night. Safety gear for
pilots and crew, including fire retardant clothing, allterrain boots, flight suits, personal locator beacons, life vests and night vision goggles, adds up to around $35,000 for each team member.” Ensuring that the crew are trained and meet regulatory requirements costs approximately $120,000 a year, according to the trust. Intensive Care Paramedic Prue Young says that it seems that the service needs a lot of funding, but it is essential.
“We always need more equipment and ongoing training if we are to do the best job we can for people. Funding allows us to be at peak condition, highly-trained, with the right equipment ready to go when the call comes - and it will come.” NBS CEO Tony Cadigan says the entire NBS team feels strongly about keeping the rescue helicopter team safe, and hopes that October’s fundraising appeal will help raise the vital funds needed to cover operational

Schools may cut staff without international students Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
High schools may have to start cutting jobs, as a lack of international students means resources are drying up. Waimea College principal Scott Haines, who is also Vice-President of the Secondary Principals Association, says that while schools like Waimea College have a stable domestic roll, the disappearance of international students means less resources. Scott says that principals are having to consider budgets and staffing for 2021. He says Waimea Colleges’ international roll will decrease by 75 per cent in 2021. “A reduction of students by that magnitude will require less resources,” Scott says. “What we know is there are thousands less international students in secondary schools,” he says. Scott says that SPANZ is working with the Ministry of Education closely to ad-
dress the issues. “We’re working to get consideration of a further financial relief package for 2021 in the same way that
Scott Haines the Government allocated $20 million to support staffing, and that was welcome news,” Scott says. “That request is in front of the minister, and we have had good levels of engagement from the ministry looking creatively for a solution.” He says that having the borders reopened safely is the long term answer but ‘now is not the time to do that.’
A funding package would keep specialist teachers to stay connected to work, and Scott is worried that without one many teachers may move into new careers. “These are experienced specialist staff who have a lot to offer, and once they’re disconnected from the work force it is difficult to re-engage.” SPANZ is also working with the ministry to look at what Scott calls ‘flexible solutions’ for managing staff. “We will be looking at surplus staffing on a scale that we haven’t seen before.” Beyond staffing, Scott says that international students and the revenue they bring directly impacts domestic students. “The resource that the revenue brings in provide the rich curriculum experience that parents have come to expect, like lower class sizes, and subjects that the ministry doesn”t fund. Principals around the country are vexing about how to provide a world-class programme with a hugely reduced level of resourcing.”
Matt Goodman, New Zealand champion auctioneer, Aaron Davis, and Chris Harvey auction a home on Hunter Avenue, Richmond, for 26% over rateable value. Aaron Davis used his 10 years of auctioneering experience, which have also earned him the title of New Zealand Auctioneering Champion, to sell the property last week. Auctioneers train all year for the National Auctioneering Championships and Aaron Davis took out the title last year while at his eighth competition. Originally from Blenheim, Aaron has been a Harcourts auctioneer for 10 years. A job where rapport with people is a huge tool of the trade, even though he didn’t have the gift-of-the-gab when he was young. “I was a shy kid and when I first started in this role I used to shake like a haunted dunny,” said Aaron. He did toastmasters to give himself a leg up and thinks it’s ironic that he now gets paid to talk. The property at 1 Hunter Avenue sold for $820,000 and has a rateable value of $650,000. A sale of 26% above the rateable value. Aaron wants to drive the auctioneering culture saying that an auction is a process. To auction is to build up to a final price without any ceiling topping it off. Genuine cash buyers drive the price, said Aaron. “To the average person, auctioneering looks easy”, said Aaron, “but that’s because a professional auctioneer makes it look easy.” Calling auctions all over New Zealand, Aaron said the Nelson market is so strong, adding that it’s a good time to sell and move to Nelson. As someone who has been temporarily camping in Auckland for the past seven years because that’s where 85% of the auction business is, Aaron said he will return home to Blenheim eventually.

Planning for unexpected outages With a little planning you can be prepared for an unexpected power outage.
Retired glider pilot Fred McKee first started flying gliders in 1961 with the Canterbury Gliders Club at Wigram Airport and has a great many stories to tell of his adventures. Like the time when a northwester wind forced him to land on the Catholic nun’s training school grounds. It was his wife Pam’s idea to pay for a flight for him with Nelson Lakes Gliding Club’s in 2004 when, after twenty minutes in the Club’s Twin Astir, he was hooked again. Fred remembered the benefits of climbing the mountains without boots. At 94 years of age Fred hasn’t flown solo for some years but gliders are still part of his life, spending time with the Nelson Lakes Gliding Club and the stunning views in the area. “It’s great to be up there amongst it, sitting back and enjoying the views,” says Fred. In one flight you can be soaring up the Travers Valley and next you’re heading to the upper slopes of St. Arnaud then Lake Rotoiti is under your feet.
Halls get upgrade Matt McCrorie Community halls around the region will be in for some much-needed upgrades, thanks to a $400,000 funding boost announced by the Government. Minister of Regional Economic Development Shane Jones announced the funding over the weekend, granted to the Tasman District Council through the provincial growth fund. Just under $12.4 million from the Provincial Growth Fund is being allocated in total to
renovate town halls and war memorials across the country. Minister Jones says more than 1000 people are expected to be employed during the renovation programme. “Town halls, other community facilities and war memorials are an integral part of any community and many of them in the regions have fallen into disrepair.” Motueka Recreation Centre, Murchison Sport, Recreation and Cultural Centre, Spring Grove Drill Hall, Collingwood Memorial Hall and Lower Moutere Memorial Hall will
all benefit from the announcement. Some of the upgrades include painting, roof repairs, insulation, and upgrading lights. Tasman mayor Tim King says that the funding will be useful to all those throughout the region who use the facilities, either on a regular basis or just for a special event. “This funding is a real bonus for everyone who uses these facilities. It’s good that we’ll be making these improvements sooner than planned for our residents to enjoy the benefits”, said mayor Tim King.
Spring weather can be unpredictable. Now is a great time to consider whether you are appropriately prepared should the weather cause an unexpected power outage. Things that will help you manage an unexpected outage include: z
A torch for each member of your household and extra batteries.
z
Either a fully charged cell phone, a landline phone that doesn’t require electricity, or battery backup if your landline phone is supplied by fibre.
z
A supply of water that isn’t dependent on an electric pump.
z
A means of cooking that doesn’t rely on electricity eg a BBQ or gas cooker.
z
A supply of matches or a lighter.
z
Instructions on how to manually operate your electrically operated garage door.
If a member of your household is medically dependent on electricity, you should also have: z
An established network of people you can call on for help and their contact details.
z
Knowledge of your medical equipment: » Does it have an audible “no power” alarm that will alert you to a power failure? » Does it have battery back-up or a standby source of power and for how long? » Do you know how to use the backup or standby equipment and are you confident that you could operate the equipment in an emergency?
If your power goes off, turn off any machines or appliances that you don’t want to unexpectedly start-up when the power is restored. This is especially important to remember if you leave your house during the power outage. Learn how to programme electronic devices such a freeview recorders and coffee machines with timers. If the power goes off while these are running, they may need to be reset after the power comes back on. Remember that the power can be restored at any time after any unexpected outage, so treat all lines, electrical installations and wiring as live. To report a power outage, damage to the power network, or a public safety issue on the network phone 0800 508 100

Popular tournament set for Greenacres Jacob Page Greenacres Golf Club will host the third annual Richmond Unlimited three-day women’s tournament next month. More than 120 golfers from around New Zealand will descend on the course for a tournament that is quickly growing in popularity. Tournament organiser Sue Taylor says the initial idea for the tournament came when a group of women from Tasman decided they could put on a tournament in their own region. “Five or six of us thought we could put on our own tournament in our backyard. “Our idea was that we wanted it to be special, we have a lot of extra touches and we want to keep the quality of the tournament high. “Each year we tweak one or two things that we learn from the previous year.” The tournament will be held on October 14, 15 and 16, starting with a 4-ball best ball stableford, a day two stableford and a gross/net final day.

Hunters will get better access to reserves Sara Hollyman Reporter
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson City Council has bowed to public pressure to let hunters have better access of a large swathe of public reserves. A pest-culling operation which had planned to close a large part of Nelson’s public reserves over the school holidays will now been staggered to allow for improved access. The annual pest control is now in its third and final year of a contract between Nelson City Council and an out-of-town professional hunting company. The operation has been conducted in the Maitai and Roding River catchments, with the aim to restore forest health in an area that is home to one of Nelson’s largest intact forest ecosystems. In 2018, the hunters culled 177 goats and deer from around 4700ha of public land at a cost of $26,066. In 2019, another 160 ungulates were removed costing another $22,871. This year council has been warned to prepare for increased helicopter time which is likely to mean a higher cost. Nelson City Council group manager environmental management, Clare Barton, says the professional hunters are “time and cost-effective, and very efficient”. The 2019, post-operation report from the contractor, Trap and Trigger, says they had hoped reserve access for recreational hunters might improve and they would observe fewer animals in areas that can be
easily accessed by hunters. “However, what was observed this year turned out to be the opposite. There were more deer and pigs in these areas, almost as if recreational hunting was non-existent. Council group manager community services Roger Ball says recreational hunting in the Maitai and Roding reserves is allowed by a permit system. He says the process is carefully managed to reduce the risk of accidents, especially with the increase of other recreational users in these reserve areas. “There are trade-offs between the cost of the oversight of recreational hunting to keep risks down, and the number of hunters which gives more chance of removing animals,” he says. But members of New Zealand Deerstalkers Association’s Nelson branch says they have made multiple attempts to gain access for their members to no avail. “We were told to contact the caretakers and we did that; one never returned our messages, the other basically told us ‘no thanks, we have enough’,” says a member who asked not to be named. “We really want to build a good relationship with these guys and with the council, we have all the right health and safety procedures, insurance coverage and training, so there’s really no reason why we can’t get in there and help keep these ungulate numbers down.” Warning signage will be in place at trail entrances to give advance notice of the closures.

Redwood Valley Road – A tale of two Henry’s Marg Farrelly Henry Redwood (senior) was born in Tixall, Staffordshire, England, in June 1794. He married Mary Gilbert in September 1816. The family, consisting of the two parents and nine children plus one son-in-law, set sail for New Zealand on the George Fyfe in June 1842. Henry had decided to leave England because the rent of his farm had been raised and he believed this was in breach of a promise that had been made to him. They arrived in Nelson 12 December 1842, unfortunately, one of the children had died during the voyage. Henry had purchased a run of 50 acres in the Nelson area from the New Zealand Company prior to leaving England. On his arrival in Nelson, he purchased the pine timber that had been used to fit out the immigrants quarters on the George Fyfe, along with a considerable amount of canvas. Henry was determined to occupy his land at once and, having hired a lighter, proceeded to take his family and their effects up the Waimea River as far as they could navigate. From there, they were transported in a bullock dray by John Kerr to their destination. The Redwoods spent the first six months under canvas on their

This was replaced two years later by a two-storey wooden house they named ‘Stafford Place’. The Redwoods farmed in Waimea West for the next twenty years. Survival in those early years meant shooting wild game. In 1843, Henry established a butchery in Nelson on his town acre on the south-east corner of Trafalgar and Bridge Street, providing mutton, beef and butter. When Henry died on 6 June 1873, his obituary described him
as a man of great vigour who had devoted thirty ears to agricultural and pastoral pursuits in New Zealand. In England he had been a tenant farmer working on a farm that was much smaller than the acreage he had here. Henry (snr) is buried at St Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church, Waimea West. Henry Redwood (Junior) was born in Staffordshire, England in 1823. He was the son of Henry Redwood and Mary Gilbert. Young Henry, aged 19, was already experienced as a farmer
and was a keen horse rider. January 1845 saw Henry (jnr) married to Elizabeth Reeves, a widow. At Waimea West, Henry built a new home,‘Hednesford,’ and constructed stables made of home-made bricks. The bricks from these stables were later used to build the Stables Tavern and Restaurant in Richmond. Henry was one of the first farmers to use a threshing machine and a steam plough. In 1863 he moved his family to Marlborough and settled at Spring Creek. Henry (Jnr) had a great love of
racing, earning him the title “Father of the New Zealand Turf ”. He established the first stud in New Zealand at his Hednesford property. In 1852, he and his father imported a stallion and 20 mares and fillies. The progeny from these horses won races in Australia and New Zealand. Land at nearby Rabbit Island was used for training the horses. Henry (Jnr) died in Blenheim on 9 November 1907. His wife had predeceased him by 16 years. His brother Archbishop Francis Redwood conducted the funeral.

Just a thought... Sage Harris Last week Ross Ferguson from Richmond Community Chruch wrote in the ‘Just a Thought’ column about the upcoming election. Ross spoke about commending those who are standing in this election, how most genuinely want to make Aotearoa a better place for you and I to live in. “I am sure that most or all are standing because they want to create a better future for the next generation, he wrote. Ross is right, we need to commend those who are standing, it is not easy to put yourself out there knowing that most will not be elected into office. Like Ross, I believe most want to make the place we call home a better place for each of us. However the reality is that, within the political machine, that is not always able to happen through national governance. The reality is that for Aotearoa to be the best place that it can be for each of us, it’s going to take all of us to make that happen. Jesus is very clear in what each of us is called to.
The first call is to love God and the second is like it, to love our neighbours as ourselves. So what does that mean? What does it mean to love our
neighbour as ourselves? Well, Jesus thankfully answers this also. You can read about it in the Bible in Luke 10. Jesus tells a story about a man who is robbed and left for dead, and many pass past him and ignore him. But one man does stop and does whatever is necessary for this traveller. And it’s not someone who we would expect, rather a samari-
tan (someone that would have been despised by the Jewish people). This man does go well above what would be expected. This is what we mean when we talk about making our nation a better place for all. A lot of the rhetoric that we hear during the election process is how a particular party will make your life better. My encouragement is not to depend on our political system to make the lives of all better, but do it yourself. Go above and beyond. Serve your neighbour, whether you know them or not, and look out for them. At the end of the parable Jesus asks the teacher of the law, “who was the one that showed mercy to the man beaten and left for dead? The expert replies: “The one who had mercy on him. Jesus tells him: “Go and do likewise. I would encourage everyone, that when you next think about how politicians perhaps aren’t meeting your expectations, my encouragement is that you go, showing mercy, serving others to create the Aotearoa we all want to live in.

Jacinda Ardern and Labour have led a decisive health response to COVID-19 that saved lives and positioned us for a strong economic recovery. Labour has a plan to create jobs and upskill workers to get the economy moving again. We have invested in training and education for people to provide the skills we need for the recovery. Our $1.6 billion Trades and Apprenticeships Training Package will provide opportunities for New Zealanders of all ages to receive trades training. It’s been great to meet Nelson people taking advantage of these opportunities.

Two local school principals will face off in a tennis challenge this weekend, to help promote the nationwide ‘Love Tennis’ campaign. Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson will challenge Henley School principal John Armstrong on Saturday October 10. ‘Love Tennis’ is aimed at introducing the sport of tennis to a wider audience and
mornings before school we leave all the gear out and they just love it,” says Dave. John, who played tennis for years, says that it is a lifetime sport, and that players of all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport together. “It can be a sport that you play your whole lifetime, people play young and go right through to their 80’s, it’s just such a great sport.” “I think John should be feeling quite confident, given his background,” Dave says, downplaing his hand.

Ali Telford, regional coordinator for Nelson Tennis, says that the national open weekend exists to bring new people into the sport. “We’ve got seven clubs in our region taking part, and we go into forty different primary schools and they support our tennis schools’ programme. We want to get the students onto the court with their families,” Ali says. “It’s been wonderful seeing the kids get involved, in the

John says that while he is backing himself, it will be a challenege. “Dave is a bit younger than me, so he’ll probably move around the court a bit quicker than me.” Ali says that the Love Tennis open weekend that is taking place is also a key fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation. “The Kelly Bowater Rally Against Breast Cancer is an event that we run to raise funds for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.”

new vision new location
Are you
Visit us to see why M New premises in the heart of Richmond West It’s hard to miss the brand-new Milestone Homes office space that has been built on Lower Queen Street. The impressive building, complimented by the illuminated signage, has certainly put a stamp on the landscape in the rapidly growing Richmond West area.
Two years ago, Milestone Homes jumped at the opportunity to secure the anchor tenancy of an office space on Lower Queen Street, enabling them to purpose design their offices to align with their vision and match the needs of their clients, staff and stakeholders. According to General Manager Adam Hills the vision of the building was “we had the opportunity to design and specify the building from scratch and we had three
main focusses: 1. Provide a superior customer experience with a relaxed, comfortable and professional face to the business. 2. Create a great space for our staff to work, giving them somewhere to enjoy coming to every day as well as something to be proud of. 3. Make the most of the public face of the business and make the Milestone Office a destination / 1st port of call for people looking to make a smarter choice for building a new home.” Built by the excellent team from Coman Construction with a selec-
tion of Milestone subcontractors adding the finishing touches, the end result is a very impressive office space! The thought that’s gone into the finishing and furnishing is evident throughout in Adam’s words “has only been achieved thanks to the advice and input from the people involved with the project”. Entering the new purpose-built offices on Lower Queen Street, you feel a sense of relaxed luxury. The welcome area is appointed with a comfy, beautifully upholstered couch, coffee machine and a contemporary print on the feature wall.
Stunning home plans and quality builds
Local trades have played a huge part in putting together the new Milestone Homes offices. Built by Coman and finished by a range of professionals, the result is stunning.
General Manager Adam Hills joined the business in 2007 and together with Richmond-local Simon Collett has overseen the growth of the business with over 300 homes built in that time. “It’s amazing to see where we are now and it’s not something that I could have imagined when I started 13 years ago” says Adam. Always focussed on building quality homes for great value, they have established themselves as a very successful brand and business. Adam has his own take on the reasons for their success. “Firstly, we have a great team who strive to achieve the best outcome for our clients. Secondly, we know what we do, we know who we build for, and we do it well. Or, as we sometimes say - ‘stick to your knitting.’ We aren’t driven by being the biggest home building company, nor do we need to win awards to get satisfaction from what we do. Our aim is that no matter their budget, every client will be given good advice, enjoy the experience and get a great home at the end of it.” Milestone Homes understand from experience that for many new home builders, much of their apprehen-
sion stems from the unknown, and difficulty in appreciating what the home will look and feel like from the plan. “When you go to an open home, you see exactly what you are going to get. You like it, you want to live there. However, building a new house is often perceived as too difficult - there are an overwhelming number of decisions to be made, and it’s hard to visualise how your home will look or feel from a piece of paper,” says Adam. Which is one of the reasons why Milestone Homes have built their showhome to mirror the specifications of their 30 proven, well considered house plans. Ideally located at 58 Berryfield Drive, two-minutes from their new office space, Adam says; “Once they’ve toured the showhome, our clients have a realistic impression of how their own home will look and feel. Regardless of the size home they want to build, the onsite specifications are the same, right down to the doors and taps. We have thought about how the homes look and each plan has three different façades or looks from the outside, as nobody wants to live in an identical

u thinking of building?
Milestone Homes is the smarter choice for your new home house to their neighbour.” With each house plan, there is the flexibility for change – whether it is adding/removing a bedroom or a walk-in pantry for example, meaning there are approximately 100 potential plans available. Milestone Homes use trusted suppliers, who supply quality products, therefore the client has trust. Adam says; “Rather than our clients having to research every fixture and fitting on the market, if they want to choose a different option, we already have three or four alternatives that have been pre-priced and narrowed down by our sup-
pliers, based on quality and what is on trend. Our suppliers maintain up-to-date samples on site at our showhome, so that our clients can visualise how the alternative will look in their own home.” Milestone Homes take as much of the hassle and apprehension out of the building process as possible. They strive to place building a new home on a par with buying an existing home. Adam says; “Clients know that they are making a really good investment, because they are always going to create equity when they build a house vs buying existing at the market rate.” Adam also
describes their incredible team of tradespeople and builders, who have been with them for many years, as being crucial to their success and good reputation. “We are very proud to be a Registered Master builder. Our tradespeople and builders have been with us for 13 years. Our construction manager is a former Apprentice of the Year and also a shareholder in the business. With the volume of homes we build each year, we are able to consistently achieve a good value, quality product. And if something isn’t right, one phone call puts it right.”

Springer named Waimea’s best Jacob Page Reporter

Waimea Combined fullback Macca Springer has been named the team’s best player for 2020. Springer was a X-factor of the backline, for the 10th-placed UC Championship team and his prodigious punt proved vital in defensive situations. Springer is at the Crusaders Knights training camp this week for emerging secondary school players and it appears the Tasman Mako are keen to have him train with the Mitre 10 Cup team as soon as possible. Waimea Combined coach James Lash says Springer was integral to a lot of the success the team has this year. Blindeside flanker Cashmir Si-
Macca Springer mone was named most enthusiastic player. Lash says he really came out of his shell. Most improved player went to right winger Tobias Kirkwood-
Thorpe for his efforts on defence. “Last year, I thought he was quite shy in terms of contact but he really stepped up and was an asset for us every time on defence. Forward of the year was openside flanler Caleb Sproul. “He was a workhorse for us and no one got past him defensively. Back of the year was shared by Springer and halfback Josh Miles. “The two of them bring different things. “Macca has the style and the speed while Josh is rugged and committed and gave us everything he had each game.” The players’ player of the year, voted for by the team went to captain and No 8 Jeen Salton for his leadership and tenacity throughout the year.

The upgrade of Ellis St is due for completion next month, and the $1.9 million Tasman District Council upgrade was designed to make the town centre safer by reducing traffic speed and enhancing walking and cycling options. Upgrades to the main street include a shared footpath wide enough for pedestrians and cyclists on the Wakefield side of Ellis Street, traffic calming islands, a new kerb and channel in isolated areas to manage any stormwater, undergrounding of power lines and some street-to-
home connections for an uncluttered skyline, and adding landscaping, planting, street furniture, and street lighting. TDC transportation manager Jamie McPherson says that the upgrade should be completed by mid-October. “The works are largely finished but the last job is the removal of the remaining power poles and reinstatement around those – this will be complete by mid-October,” he says. “This has had to wait for customers connected to the overhead fibre internet to be connected by the various ISPs to the new underground cable.”
Quiz nights on again in Brightwater Quiz nights are on again every Tuesday at Sprig and Fern in Brightwater. Kick off is 7 pm and as always there’s a great selection of raffle prizes. Get in early to grab a seat and unwind before you and your quiz-team streak ahead of the others. Each weeek the raffle will raise money for a different cause.

A string of significant donations over the last few weeks has got the Snowden’s Bush Trust feeling ‘extremely positive’ about reaching their fundraising goal. The group, which is aiming to buy the frontage of the Snowden’s Bush Reserve from the Anglican Diocese to save the land from being converted into housing, and preserve it for public use, has until February 2021 to raise $350,000 to buy the land. And thanks to some high-profile donations and grants in the last month, they have just over $100,00 left to go. Trust member Annette Moorhead applied to Pub Charity and just received a $30,000 grant. “It’s a big boost,” Annette says. Trust member Janice Gibbs says that with the recent donations, the future of the land is looking promising. The Brightwater Horticultural Society has also donated $15,000,

Nelson Car Club President Phil Lash snatched victory at the club’s Kohatu Park Autocross, held in near-perfect spring sconditions. Lash was driving his unique, 3-litre, flat six-engined Subaru Impreza, fitted, perhaps a little unusually, with an automatic gearbox. Carey Harwood had led all day in his more conventional Subaru Impresa, with Lash having a big push in the fourth and final run that Harwood had chosen to miss. Also pushing on was Oscar Bowater in his Toyota Celica who equalled Harwood’s previous best time to finish joint second. First two-wheel drives, and sixth equal, were Marlborough Car Club’s Jonty Brenssell, driving a borrowed Toyota Vitz, and Adrian Leitch in his older Toyota AE86 Corolla, followed by Phil McManus debuting his freshly rally-spec’d BMW 318ti The Nelson Car Club have spent
around the Nelson region and beyond. So far, the track features over 1.4km of loose-surfaced corners, fast straights and undulations to challenge drivers of purposebuilt competition cars as well as completely unmodified road cars. In fact, the last event saw the unmodified Subaru Forester of James Hardy finish in fifth place
overall in a field of 26 cars, which event organiser Carey Harwood says, “is what these events are all about. “The intention of the track we have built, is for the Nelson Car Club to have a venue that will allow anyone who wants to come along and race competitively in a safe and controlled environment. “Motorsport is sometimes
Runners face uphill battle at Belgrove Yvonne West On Saturday, 26th September, Nelson and Tasman runners and walkers finally got the chance to take part in the very popular Belgrove to Kohatu Race. The race had been postponed from earlier in the year due to the Covid-19 lockdown. This 15km race followed the scenic Great Taste Trail from Belgrove, with a lovely, relentless 7 km uphill climb to the Spooners Tunnel. Being a warm sunny day, athletes had a reprieve from
basking in the heat by having to make their way through the 1.6 km tunnel, and putting a unique spin on this race, runners had to guided by the wearing of their own headlamps. This event could also be run as a two-person relay and it was at the tunnel carpark that the baton change took place for those who had chosen this option. The last leg of the race to Kohatu, after the long ascent all the way up to the tunnel, was a relief for competitors to enjoy as a nice downhill run was in

thought of as an expensive and maybe elite sport, but what this track and our autocrosses are able to offer is a venue that is accessible to anybody who wants to give it a go.” Harwood and his family have taken this idea to heart, with Harwood’s 12 year old daughter Kiera Harwood also competing in her first event, in her Honda Civic. In contrast to her first-ever drive, Nelson motorsport stalwart Colin Knapp bought out his famous Masport Escort for its first drive in anger in over 15 years. Motorsport and rallying fans will be familiar with the Team Masport Escorts, driven by local and international stars in rallying’s heydays of the 1970s and 80s. The next event held at the track will be another autocross on Sunday, October 4th. front of them. Matt Bowen and Curtis Moore led the field throughout the race and brought the best out in each other. The younger legs of Matt got him across the line in 1.02.08hrs, just 4 secs ahead of Curtis. Similarly, in the walking section, Alan West and Daryl Nish pushed each other to keep up a fast pace throughout the race and finish in under two hours. This Saturday, 3 October, runners and walkers look forward to a two-person relay over a 10km course, from the Washbourn Gardens in Richmond.

s w e N g n i h s Fi Abundance in the bay Dominik Berghamer Weather and work kept me from fishing over the last two weeks but the ones who were lucky enough to make use the calmer days caught a few snapper! There are many reports of them being caught in the shallows out of Okiwi Bay, and the Golden Bay snapper appear to have turned up as well. Some were even caught off the Boulder Bank, but small fish only. This is not very surprising, last season saw an abundance of small snapper, they grew steadily over the summer and were about 25cm just before lockdown. In many places they were so thick that they became a nuisance and we had to change spots. Most of these fish should be legal sized by now. This early in the season fishing in the bay is usually hard work, the snapper are few and far between and the spiny dogfish abundant. Patience and perse-
verance (and luck) are needed to find a calm day and the right spot. Delaware Bay is always good for a trophy fish in spring but these large old fish are shy and very clever. Burley works well but, unfortunately, attracts a lot of sharks (and in some years red cod). Using prawns or crabs as bait can help reduce the numbers of unwanted fish caught. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s new season starts on the 1st of October and the members joining before October 16th will go into the draw to win a very special prize: AquaZition Rods and Hunting and Fishing Nelson have sponsored a hand crafted AquaZition Tasman Bay Action rod and a Shimano Trinidad 12a reel. This top end combo is valued at $1200 and the winner will be drawn at our next social day on the 18th of October. Find more info on www.dawn breakers.co.nz or on facebook. Tight lines!

Wanderers host under-14 tournament The Taylors Wanderers Sports Club hosted the Tasman Rugby Union under-14 tournament at Lord Rutherford Park on Saturday in a festival atmosphere designed to give more opportunities to the region’s promising players. Eight teams that have competed against each other during the covid-disrupted season, welcomed the chance to play three matches in close succession, before heading off to Trafalgar Park to support the Mako in the match against Waikato. All teams and coaching staff were guests of the TRU and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. The games at Lord Rutherford Park were highly competitive as would be expected for a final round and end-of-season encounter and it was very pleasing to have all teams represented, with Marlborough Boys fielding two teams, requiring a 6.30am start. Nelson College with three teams, Motueka High, Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers represented the local clubs. Games were restricted to 30 minutes

Trout season begins tomorrow from page 1 “Post winter many of us are ‘champing at the bit’ to throw a lure at a trout or two.” The region has experienced a remarkably stable winter, meaning trout are in excellent condition as we head into the new season. “Stable rivers means thriving invertebrate populations, and trout will feed for longer and be less affected by large flood events which suppress food sources,” Jacob says. Fish & Game recently liberated 200, 8-14 pound lunkers into Lake Argyle, and since then we’ve fielded plenty of reports from anglers who have locked horns with these brutes. “The good news is there is more where that came from, and we still have over 500 double-digit trophy trout to release into the lake this season, so we expect there will be some very happy anglers around indeed” Jacob says. Fish & Game will also be holding their annual tag fish competition at Lake Argyle, where 200 tagged fish
are released just before Christmas and there are some great prizes on offer. If anglers want a bit more solitude with the chance of catching some great rainbow trout, Fish & Game will be doing another release of fish into the Branch and Leatham rivers. “For this Trustpower-funded release we use a helicopter with a monsoon bucket to transport trout into the headwaters, and we get lots of great feedback from anglers of all skill levels catching fish up here,” Jacob says “It’s clear the domestic tourism scene is booming, and Kiwis are making the most of the opportunity to see their own backyard.” Jacob says. “Without a doubt, getting back into nature is not only great for the soul, it’s good for your physical and mental well-being, and our magnificent wilderness provides the ideal place to recharge the batteries,” Jacob says.

Changes make applying for rates rebates easier
Second Hand Sunday is back on 18 October, so if you’ve been feeling the urge to spring clean your home and property, now is a good time to do it. Second Hand Sunday is a fun way to declutter and re-home unwanted household goods for free – anything from chairs, books, clothing or leftover bits and pieces from building projects – and a good chance to scour the region’s streets looking for pre-loved treasures. How to take part: This is a joint effort between Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council, so you’ll need to register your address online at nelson. govt.nz/second-hand-sunday to take part. On the day, print off a letterbox poster, put your items out on your driveway by 10.00 am, and bring any leftovers in at the end of the day. Download the participant list on the Friday before, or pick up a copy from any Council office. Please don't put out food, dangerous goods like faulty electrical equipment, or chemicals. The event will take place rain or shine.
Monday information sessions for seniors Age Concern Nelson Tasman is offering a series of informative talks and workshops on a variety of topics relevant to being 65+. The cost is $3 per session, registrations are required. All sessions are in the Age Concern Hall, 62 Oxford Street, Richmond. Upcoming sessions include: • 12 October, Hearing Information Session, with Tracy Dawson from Hearing Nelson, 10.00 am – 11.30 am • 2 November, Advanced Care Planning, With Carla Arkless, 10.00 am – 11.30 am See the full list of sessions planned for the rest of the year on the website, ageconcernnt.org.nz.
State Highway 6 upcoming detour From Monday 5 October to Saturday 17 October, Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency will close a section of State Highway 6, between Lamb Valley Road and Kawatiri Junction to do some storm damage repairs, road shoulder widening, minor works at the Kawatiri Rest area, and general road maintenance. During this time traffic in both directions will be detoured via St Arnaud. Please follow all the signage in place and allow extra time for your journey.
Changes to payment options at Resource Recovery Centres Please be aware that from this week (1 October 2020), we will no longer be accepting cheques for payment at our Resource Recovery Centres. We’re making this change for several reasons: to reduce the risk of dishonoured payments; because cheques are being phased out by many banks; and they are now only used by a very small number of customers. Since May 2020 customers have had the option of paying by credit card and we now accept PayWave at all sites.
Last chance to give feedback on water safety Submissions close on Friday 2 October. Don’t miss your chance to give feedback on a proposal to permanently chlorinate the following water supplies: Upper Tākaka, Hamama, Motueka, Riwaka/Kaiteriteri and Richmond. You can read the full statement of proposal online at tasman.govt.nz/feedback or see a hard copy at all Tasman District Council offices and libraries (Tākaka, Murchison, Motueka and Richmond).

Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund – apply now! The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund applications are now invited until 31 October. The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund offers help with travel costs for rural sports clubs and rural school teams. The fund is to help young people aged from 5 to 19 to participate in local sports competitions. Sport NZ fully funds the Rural Travel Fund, which Council administers locally on their behalf. Head to tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to check out the funding guidelines and complete the application form by 31 October.

WEDNESDAY 30 September 2020 death
Larry, Nicola, Emily, and their families would like to extend our sincere thanks to family and friends who have supported us during the recent passing of Mary. We have been overwhelmed by, and so grateful for, the love and support shown to us through the flowers, cards, gifts, food, visits, phone calls and messages that we have received. To all those who assisted with Mary’s care and support over the year, a special thank you. Mary, in her own unique quiet, but caring way, touched the lives of so many people. That has been reflected in the wonderful support so many of you have given back to us. Please accept this as a personal acknowledgement. And please, remember to smile! That is what Mary would do, and what she would want us all to do. Thank you so much. Larry, Nicola, and Emily.
