Internet scammers target Murchison Judene Edgar Murchison area residents are being targeted by phone scammers offering PC support for Windows, with one resident receiving up to eight calls in a day and resorting to using dog whistles to try and stop the calls. Robert King-Tenison from Mur-

chison Computers says that the scammers are introducing themselves as being from “Windows support”, which makes it sound like they’re from Microsoft. They quote people a number that can be found on their computer which makes it seem genuine, however the number is common across systems.

After gaining access to people’s computers they take control and put a lock on it and then try and extort between $300 and $500 to unlock the system, Robert says. While the scam isn’t new, they’re concentrating on the Murchison area at the moment and “there are people falling for it”. Robert says he has been receiv-

ing plenty of calls from concerned residents since the scamming started earlier this month. There are also reports that the scammers are starting to target Tapawera. Police senior sergeant Tania Van Ooyen says on the Scamwatch website that it is important to report scams as soon as possi-

ble to the Netsafe website or call Netsafe on 0509 638 723. Netsafe provides guidelines to help people avoid scams and what to do if you’ve given remote access to your computer. If people have lost money we will do everything we can to help, but

Search and Rescue do Good in the Hood Simon Bloomberg Land Search and Rescue volunteers Andrew Allan and Jonny Fris took time out from their day jobs and rescuing people to clean some car windows at Z Richmond last week as part of the annual Good in the Hood promotion. Z has been helping community groups and volunteer organisations around the country do Good in the Hood by donating more than $1million to 800 groups each year since 2012. Z Richmond manager Gigisha Gandhi says Land Search and Rescue will be one of four groups receiving a share of $4000 and, in return, Andrew

and Jonny spent Friday afternoon working on Z Richmond’s forecourt. “This is a great time for a group to talk to customers and tell them more about the great work they are doing in the community,” Gigisha says. Z Richmond has nominated Neighbourhood Support Waimea, the Tasman Great Taste Trail and No Child Left Inside as the other three groups who will receive a donation. Land SAR has 60 volunteers in Nelson and Tasman and Andrew says they complete about 25 operations a year. He says “we are very grateful to Z Richmond for Z Richmond’s Jigisha Gandhi with Nelson Land Search and Rescue volunteers Andrew Allan, right, and Jonny Fris at the donation.” the Richmond service station on Friday. St John’s, because they are always needed in the community, always there when you need them and they do a great job.

I’d give it to Red Cross because they help people in need and they need it badly because they government doesn’t give them enough money.

I’d allocate it out to all of the churches to further the work of Jesus Christ’s ministry.

Internet scammers target Murchison FROM PAGE 1 “unfortunately it’s unlikely you will get your money back, especially if the scammers are based overseas,” says Tania. “That’s why it’s so important to avoid the scammers tricks in the first place”. Netsafe’s director of Outreach, Sean Lyons, says “cold calling PC tech support scams are one of the most common scams reported to Netsafe. These scammers may call you multiple times, and be threatening and intimidating. If you receive a call from these scammers we suggest that you politely say “no thanks” and hang up the phone”. Sean said that people may need to do this multiple times. “Don’t engage in conversation, try to ‘trick’ the scammer or tell them off. We have heard of instances where people have done this, and end up being harassed by the scammers.” Robert says that it’s important to not be reactive to offers of support but to be proactive and to seek support from professionals and reputable companies. “People need to get support that they trust”.

Jigsaw Preschool children with teachers, from left, Kat Selwood and Jasmine Nilsson, and parent Hayley Kaisia will be taking part in the Queen St Digger Hunt this week. The Richmond Unlimited promotion started on Monday and ends on June 5. Children can collect an entry form and yellow hard hats from the Richmond Mall information desk and search for the diggers hiding on Queen St retailers’ shop windows. When children have completed the hunt and returned their entry form to the information desk, they will go into a draw to win one of two Fisher Price ride-on toy diggers.

Waimea River bank to get makeover Simon Bloomberg A new picnic area and trailhead is being developed on the banks of the Waimea River next to the Appleby Highway Bridge as part of a long-term plan to enhance the environment and encourage recreational use of the Waimea River Park. Tasman District Council rivers and coastal engineer Giles Griffith says the area on the right side of the river, immediately upstream from the bridge, has already been levelled in

preparation for shaping and landscaping with native plants. It will be planted in grass in the spring and picnic tables, barbecues and, later, a bike pump track will be installed to create a recreational area “similar to the one on the other side of the bridge”. “There’s still a bit of fill to come in and then the area will be shaped and grass will be sewn in the spring,” Giles says. “We’ll also put in some bollards and parking area - it’s all part of a plan to enhance the environ-

ment around the Waimea River.” Giles says the new park area will have trailheads that will access a network of walking and cycling tracks and link to the Tasman Great Taste Trial. The aggregate plant just upstream from the new park is on a lease and will “eventually” be closed so that a new trail between the two Great Taste Trail bridges can be developed. The time frame for that stage of the development is about 10 years, Giles says.

Plant thefts ‘ruining it for everybody’ Simon Bloomberg A group of dedicated volunteers from Keep Richmond Beautiful spent all day planting 500 native trees and shrubs to beautify a hillside next to the Jimmy Lee Creek walkway on April 26. Less than two weeks later, some lowlife who was too miserable to buy their own plants, stole 56 of them, leaving the volunteers “angry and disappointed”. “It’s not vandalism, it’s theft,” Keep Richmond Beautiful chairman Ron Argue says. “It’s disappointing - it’s ruining it for everybody. “Someone obviously wanted them for their own garden. It could even be a cowboy contractor and the people they are working for won’t even know they are stolen.” Ron says the planting is part of a revegetation scheme that has seen their volunteers plant 8000 trees and shrubs around Richmond every year for the last three years. The stolen plants were paid for by Keep Richmond Beautiful which receives grants from the Tasman District Council, Rata

Foundation and Network Tasman Trust. Volunteer Des Henry, who has been planting native plants around Jimmy Lee Creek for 20 years, is also angry and wants anyone who saw anything suspicious to report it to police. Des suspects the thief removed the plants at night and says all their volunteers will be keeping an eye on the area over the next few months. “I can’t understand how anyone could do this,” Des says. “Why don’t they just buy the plants like everyone else.” Council horticultural officer Richard Hilton says the plants only cost $2.37 each, although the value of the voluntary labour involved in planting and maintenance is significantly higher. Council also supplies some of the plants for the revegetation schemes which Richard says is helping to beautify the Richmond Hills. “It’s all voluntary and a lot of people spend a lot of time and energy planting and maintaining so this has hit them quite hard,” Richard says. “They are so committed - it’s very disappointing for them.”

New reporter joins Weekly Former Tasman district councillor Judene Edgar is probably not new to many of Waimea Weekly’s readers, but she is new to us. Judene started this week as our new reporter in the Richmond office to cover news, events and activities in the Waimea district. Judene completed a Graduate Diploma in Communications at Southern Institute of Technology last year with a view to moving into a career

in communications. Now she is excited about putting that theory into practise as part of the Weekly’s hard-working team of journalists. “I’m excited to be working in a new area of communications,” says Judene, who has a background in research, editing, policy and strategy. “There are so many amazing people and organisations doing great things every day and it’s exciting to be able to report on them”.

In addition to reporting on what’s happening in our district, she’s keen to hear about historic occasions, celebrate volunteers and the work of community groups, and help our community to celebrate and share in everything that’s good about the region. She may even return to the Tasman District Council chambers to cover meetings and make sure her former colleagues are staying on the right track.

New parking limits

New time limits have been placed in 17 car parks to ensure shoppers have access to parking adjacent to stage two of the Queen St upgrade. The Tasman District Council has already reduced the time limits on some long-term parks to two hours and last week it freed up another 17 parks in Harkness Carpark. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the new P120 time limits will free-up car parks adjacent to the second stage of the development which has closed Queen St to traffic between McIndoe Place and Cambridge St. Richard says it’s critical for retailers in the construction zone to have car parks as close as possible to encourage customers to keep coming to their shops. “Queen St is open for business and we want to try and encourage people to keep supporting these retailers in the construction zone.”

Nelson Live ends

On the back of its biggest ever month, nelsonlive. co.nz owners Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly are changing the focus of their online business. The two locally-owned newspapers started nelsonlive.co.nz in early 2015, filling a gap in the breaking news space. Its numbers have steadily increased to the point where it now receives more than 200,000 hits a month, making it the most popular locallyowned website in Nelson. But with surging growth in its papers, the owners of the two newspapers have decided to “park” nelsonlive.co.nz at the end of this month to focus on the print editions and new digital strategies. Waimea Weekly managing director Steve Page says the newspapers are going through a “real growth phase”. “We’ve been getting great results from our newspaper and that’s because our advertisers have been getting great results, so why fight what the market is telling us? It’s interesting to note that nowhere in the world is this type of digital website economical yet community papers, especially locally-owned ones are going from strength to strength”. Steve says the Waimea Weekly and the region’s Grey Power magazine will still be available to read online at its new website, www.waimeaweekly. co.nz. “We know we have a lot of ex-pats who are keen to read the news from our wonderful region, so they’ll still be able to do that. But people love the Waimea Weekly so our focus will be to continue making it as interesting to read every week as we possibly can.” Steve says Waimea Weekly has taken on more reporters to cover more stories from the Tasman District. Sister paper Nelson Weekly will also be running its own website www.nelsonweekly.co.nz, where you can find a digital copy of its paper each week.

Motueka 22-year-old Zoe Bishop was driving along the Coastal Highway near Moana Rd when her car collided with another vehicle around 11.45am. Zoe died at the scene and the man in the other vehicle was flown to hospital with serious injuries before being discharged on Sunday. Zoe’s family and friends have taken to social media to honour her with several posts and comments. “At 22 she had so much to live for and was such a lovely girl, always with a smile,” says a family member. “Her death is more than just another roading statistic; for our family and friends this hits and hurts.” The serious crash unit will continue to investigate the cause of the collision. choose just one winner in each of the three categories because “all of the entries were extraordinary in their own way”. “Each one showed an abundance of creativity and ingenuity - we were so impressed. “A lot of the people have never done anything like this before and they are all amazing.” Josephine Tucker won the best entry that relates to the story in the book, Penny Sturrock won the category for best use of 3D elements and Sarah Haycock won the best use of paper crafts. Josephine says her entry is based on the book Second Sight which tells the tale of a woman sending her pilot son away to fight in WWII while Penny’s is based on an outdoor theme with an origami yacht and a whale set in rolling waves made from curled paper. Josephine says she started reading Second Sight and found it had so many similarities to her own life that she incorporated her family members into the book art. Penny says

she was inspired by her love of the outdoors and wanted to have some fun “throwing paint around and experimenting” when she created her entry. Sarah says her entry is not only a work of art but tells her story of her battle with depression and metal illness. Although the pages are painted black to reflect the darkness she experienced during her episodes of depression, there are also holes in the pages that progressively bigger, symbolising a light at the end of the tunnel. “I always wanted to do a piece that showed I could be creative but I also wanted to tell a story,” Sarah says. “I’ve suffered from depression on-and-off for years so I made that part of this book.” Pania says prizes were donated by Richmond businesses Impressions Art Supplies and Picture Framers and PaperPlus, as well as Takaka Take Note. All the entries will be on display in the Richmond Library until June 6.

Course for Queen St retailers Judene Edgar Retail consultant and Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology tutor Bill Brett is arming Richmond retailers with the necessary tools to help them keep their businesses thriving during the Queen Street upgrade. The Tasman District Council’s $11 million upgrade to replace ageing stormwater, wastewater and water pipes and create an improved street environment commenced in February 2017 and is scheduled to finish April 2018. The Nelson Tasman Business Trust is concerned the upgrade could have a negative impact on Queen St businesses and following a meeting with Richmond Unlimited and retailers earlier this month, “were keen to offer something to help,” trust manager Sarah Holmes says. Sarah says the trust is delivering a series of four retail management workshops designed specifically for Richmond businesses, thanks to the generosity of business men-

tor Bill and Richmond Unlimited. About a dozen retailers attended the first workshop held at the Richmond Mall on Tuesday which covered points of difference and understanding your customers. Bill says that “you need to be talking to your customers on an ongoing basis” not just when they come into the shop. While there are some retailers who are struggling with the impact of the upgrade, Richmond Unlimited chair Marina Buonocore says that “these are skills businesses need on an ongoing basis- this is not just about the upgrade”. Women weekend warriors learn safety skills Judene Edgar Kiwi “women weekend warriors” ventured into Kiwi bloke territory last week when they attended Stihl Shop Richmond’s Chainsaw Skills workshop for women as part of their annual Safety Awareness Week. In addition to safety, about 20 women of all ages and backgrounds learned chainsaw oper- Instructor Shane Harris, right, discusses the mysteries of operating a chainsaw with women attending a chainsaw skills workating procedures and basic maintenance which shop at Stihl Shop Richmond last Wednesday. Stihl Shop Richmond manager Grant Blanchet says is all about giving the women “a bit of empowerment and confidence”. Grant says more and more women are using chainsaws for pruning, trimming, cutting firewood and felling small trees so it’s important that they have both the knowledge and confidence they need. This year the course was run by Shane Harris who owns and operates specialised training company Harris Training Services. Shelley Eggers went along because “a chainsaw is unforgiving”. It’s important to have “the ability to do things yourself but do them safely,” Shelley says. “It was very informative. Everyone got something out of it”. Your Voice Sanctuary funding 'a disgrace': The vote in Nelson council for Sanctuary funding was a corrupt process. The councillors who stood down, after being told they had a conflict of interest, were not joined by others, and the Mayor, who has in the past clearly demonstrated an apparent position in favour of Sanctuary funding. The process was a disgrace both to democracy and to Local Government in New Zealand. Dan McGuire. Councillor Tim Skinner's statement in the last print of the Nelson Weekly that he has lost confidence in the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary echoes the thoughts of many Nelson residents. There is much to be concerned about. The setting of 42 consent conditions on the poison drop by the Commissioner last year is now being revisited by the trustees who saw the new RMA legislation introduced into Parliament last month as an opportunity to renegotiate these conditions, and they have done so with Council staff behind closed doors. Their choice of the poison brodifacoum is to target rodents. We know that birds such as kingfisher and morepork are predators and will suffer secondary poisoning. The South Island Robin, introduced into the Sanctuary, is also at risk (refer Ulva Island study) and weka will die on eating the bait. The Trust's decision to do the poison drop has damaged the relationship with former supporters and volunteers of the

Sanctuary and there will no doubt be consequences. Trustees of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary would do well to cancel the poison drop and focus on the cost of keeping the fence in place. As photos taken this week have shown, its integrity is also in question. Cynthia McConville.

Good news ...really pleased. Roger Doran. My grandfather was in WW2 and came from England the same and never got a plaque either. He is buried in the Motueka Cemetery. Jason Kilburn. Vege prices up after downpour: Never heard of greenhouses? Prices in Nelson are mental. Mark Wileman.

George's parents proud: Very well written article, Simon. Interesting take on the big W! I'd definitely be enforcing the nephew naming rights. Mike Buschl.

Hydroponics all the way. Sally Howieson.

Deservedly proud parents. Very cool. Great job, Simon, taking us into their living room to feel the excitement. Had goose bumps just reading this! Karen Goodger.

Fresh Choice makes most of rubbish: Good on you guys. More businesses need to take note. For me personally hearing about this kind of thing would make me switch super markets. Drew Fahey

Great article. I can imagine most of this. I remember sharing a room with Paul in China two weeks ago. I got reports two mornings of how George was doing in the Tour of California. Internet wasn't brilliant. Then he suddenly realized he was looking at last year's race! Andrew Middleton.

Crash victim named: Rest in peace, beautiful girl. She will definitely be remembered for the beautiful kind person she was. Crystal Walker.

WW2 hero gets his plaque after all: Thank you, Ian Martyn, he so deserves this. Melanie Pont.

Very sad, same place that my mum died in 1991. Kayla Heath. So so sad, my heart goes out to her family and friends. A parents worst nightmare. Kerry Devine.

Wow, so deserved and should never have been an issue. Wendy Anderson.

Words. Do they mean what you think they mean? Have they morphed into something different in your WWW.GIBBONS.CO.NZ life time? No longer is English just English. troduced me to the concept of being ‘hangry’. It combines two feelings in one word - I am hungry and because I am hungry, I am also angry. She uses this word fairly regularly, especially when anticipating that this ‘hangry’ episode could happen imminently if not given something to eat. Oh yes, and then there’s ‘earworm’. I love this one and anticipate using it often. It’s when there’s a song or tune, that once you’ve heard it, is stuck in your head. Can you

relate to that? What about ‘staycation’ - the holiday you have when you stay at home? I looked up some lingo typically used in the past. Well, a lot of those words have stayed in use today. ‘Righteous’ can mean the absence of evil or extremely fine or beautiful, like a ‘righteous’ paint job on a car. ‘Wicked’ can literally mean evil or amazing. You must decide what is meant by the context and the tone – it’s up

to you. ‘Jesus Christ’. Well, those are words you can’t feel ‘meh’ (look that one up) about. They are usually said with emotion and meaning. Often, they are used in ignorance, sometimes with hate. They can be used out of context, misrepresented even. They are timeless, relevant and, I believe, the best words ever. Jesus Christ is a person. He is alive and worth researching. He is your creator God.

Now is the time to make sure your fire is keeping your warm and keeping our air clean this winter. Visit www.tasman.govt.nz for more about Tasman’s air quality management. With the days shortening and the air growing chillier, it’s time to start thinking about home heating and insulation. A properly insulated home is warmer in winter and cooler in summer and when quality insulation is purchased from a reputable company, it becomes an invaluable investment. Comfortmaster’s belief in the power of good insulation is what pushed them to

start The Eco Home Project. The company uses nationwide brand buying power to purchase insulation at a lower price, passing those savings on to their customers. It’s not hard to be eligible for The Eco Home Project as anyone living in a home built before 2005 with all accessible areas insulated qualifies, with most homes taking around five hours to complete. perfect time to be planting, pruning and planning for your spring garden. For colour in winter and spring, select from our great range of Leucadendrons, Proteas and Grevilleas, they are great picking for floral displays. June is a great time to be planting citrus trees; provide adequate food and water throughout the critical growing times and don’t forget to cover young trees with frost cloth for a couple of winters until they get established. Winter is also the best time to be planting Roses and Fruit Trees. We have a great selection of both coming in early June and we are currently taking orders for bare root roses and fruit trees.

Above, Plunket Founder Sir Frederic Truby King.

$500 Proud to support Plunkets 110th List with Tracy Beer at Mike Pero and I will donate $500 to Nelson Plunket.

Feature

For decades, Plunket has helped Nelson families thrive and this year marks 110 years of the institution supporting the community. The Plunket Society was founded in 1907 in Dunedin by Sir Frederic Truby King, with a vision to help mothers and save babies who were dying from malnutrition and disease. It started with The Karitane Home for Babies in Dunedin, which took in children and babies under two years who were not treated under the general hospital system. These Plunket Karitane Hospitals were the first of their kind and soon spread rapidly around the country. By May 1908, a branch of the new society had been formed in each of the four main centres, and attracted the patronage of the influential Victoria Plunket - wife of the then governorgeneral and mother of eight. From then on, the society took the name 'Plunket', after Lady Plunket. Many branches and sub-branches were established, and they fundraised for everything - from Plunket nurse

salaries and expenses, to building clinics and Karitane hospitals. Sir Truby King passed away in 1938, but his legacy lives on in the Plunket society, although the strict regime of care and directive advice has been replaced by a more flexible partnership model of care and support.

Milestones over the years include the establishment of the national car seat rental scheme, piloted in 1981 in Dunedin with just four car seats. Today over 27,000 restraints are available throughout the country. Also, in 1994, PlunketLine was introduced, a telephone advice service staffed with Plunket nurses. In the 1990s, Plunket was starting to see more Māori parents and families, so a training programme for Māori Health Workers was set up. And more recently, more Pacific Island families have started enrolling with Plunket. Today, parents of more than 90 percent of new babies access some aspect of Plunket's Well Child health service. They reach families in a variety of ways, such as face-to-face through home visits, clinics, mobile clinics, and parenting education courses. In the Nelson Tasman region, there are Plunket clinics in Paru Paru Road, Stoke, Tahunanui, Richmond, Brightwater and Wakefield.

Waimea Combined trounce Nelson Jacob Page Sports Editor

Waimea Combined’s 38-24 win over Nelson College in their UC Championship rugby match had Waimea flanker Reuben Chubb on the verge of tears. Hefty underdogs before the match, Waimea Combined turned on a scintillating second half performance to take local bragging rights in a commanding six tries to four win at Waimea College. Fullback Matt Stevenson and captain Josh McPherson each scored twice, in a game where the final score flattered Nelson College at fulltime thanks to an injury time try and an intercept score in the first half. Reuben, who is one of two vice-captains, says his team knew they could do it. “It’s surreal, training for three months, we knew we were capable of toppling

them and to do it is great. “This moment is right at the top of my rugby days, I’m about to cry, it’s all so surreal. “We did bucket loads of fitness training in the Waimea Hills and we worked so hard for each other. “We know this is our fortress, nobody can beat us here and we know we can beat anyone on the day.” “I’m fizzing for the whole team, this was the goal, not just to play but to win this game.” Josh says to come back from conceding an early try and produce a dominant performance was one of the most pleasing aspects of the win. “Leading this team and getting a result like this is something I’ve been looking forward to all of my college life so to achieve it is amazing.” Waimea Combined host Shirley Boys’ High School on Saturday.

Speed skating a hit Jacob Page Nelson’s first of three rounds of the winter speed skating series drew more than 40 competitors to the Tahuna Skating Rink on Saturday night. Nelson coach Alan Bartlett says 43 skaters took part, including 13 from Blenheim. After competitors were split into grades based on their sprint time trial times. Richmond’s Holly Ward backed up her good form at the Oceania

champs in Brisbane at Easter with a third place in the points competition. Nelson’s Liam McDonald was the best in grade two with all skaters racing over different distances on the night. Nelson is set to send 30 skaters to the Top of the South Tour in Blenheim over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Round two of the winter speed skating series will be on June 10 at 4.30pm with skaters of all skill levels encouraged to enter.

SportS Bowls Paul Baker, John Orbell and Don Horn won section one and Gary Richards, Ron Sparks and Alan Dannefaerd won section two of the Richmond Bowling Club’s Ken Smith Memorial two bowl triples tournament at Club Waimea over the weekend. Both winning teams received $600 respectively for victories in each section with Paul’s team impressive with six wins and a draw over the weekend. Cricket Nelson cricketer Saffron Wilson has been named in the Canterbury women’s indoor cricket team for the upcoming national championships. The teenager has been a regular fixture in Central District’s age-group cricket teams in the summer for her all-round abilities. Rugby Tasman and Crusaders hooker Andrew Makalio has been selected in the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians team to play the British and Irish Lions on June 3 at Whangarei in what will be the Lions’ tour opener. Andrew has received more game time off the bench with the Crusaders in recent weeks as the red and blacks continue their unbeaten 2017 Super Rugby season. Tasman captain Shane Christie has been ruled out for the Super Rugby season with the Highlanders due to concussion-like symptoms. Swimming Tasman swimmers Sierra Thomas and Sam McKenzie have been named in Swimming New Zealand’s national development squad. Both swimmers will be part of training camps and will travel to train with other swimmers.

A strong capacity field, including four professionals, will be teeing off in the Taylor Timbers Waimea Open at Greenacres Golf Club this weekend. The annual tournament has been upgraded from a championship to open status for the first time and that change is reflected in the number and quality of entries. Nelson professionals Nick Loach and David Riordan will be competing against Blenheim professional Jonti Phillipson and Christchurch’s Mike Gainsford, as well as top amateurs Greenacres’ Andrew Drummond and Nick Ludbrook and Nelson’s Kameran Clarke, Mitchel Newport, Tom and David Zohrab, Connor Winter, Josh Simpson and Craig New-

man. The women’s field is headed by experienced Nelson player Lesley Baxter and promising young talent Lizzie Neale. Michelle Reardon, Robin White, Natalee Reed and Donna Mitchell also line up in the women’s field. The only notable absences are defending champions Ryan Chisnall and Eve Clarke – Ryan flies to the UK on Friday for the British and Scottish Open amateur championships while Eve is presently based in England. And there will be plenty to play for with the annual tournament acting as a trial for the Tasman representative teams as well as offering $7000 in prizes. The 36hole tournament starts on Saturday from 10am with a shotgun start on Sunday at 10am.

the season and in an apparent three-way tussle with FC Nelson and Nelson College for the league crown. Richmond’s 10-2 win over the weekend against Wakefield shows there is plenty of attacking potential within the team. “We both took the time off work and thought it was a good time to come out and see the country,” Joe says. The duo are both personal trainers and they expected to be here until the end of July. “The chance to play during the English offseason is very appealing and Ben told us that if we didn’t do it we’d re-

Joe Turner and Tom Hickey might just be the duo Richmond Athletic need. The English duo and friends have come to Nelson based on the word of star striker Ben Harris and they look set to give Richmond Athletic the steel that they did not have 12 months ago. Richmond won their first seven games last year in the league race before they imploded and faltered out of the contest. Richmond find themselves in a similar situation again, undefeated at the halfway point of

gret it,” Tom says. Both players live about 20 minutes outside of London. “I’d like to put Richmond in a position to win the league, but from a personal level I want to score goals and enjoy my football and make the most of the opportunity,” Joe says. Tom says the football is not as physical as he expected. “The technique is better than I was expecting, especially with the younger players, but it’s not as physical as I am used to,” Tom says. So far, so good, as Richmond’s season continues to go from strength to strength.

Waimea Old Boys RFC

www.wobrfc.co.nz

WOB will face familiar foe in Tasman Trophy Jacob Page Waimea Old Boys avoided a trip to Blenheim for Wednesday night’s Tasman Trophy rugby semifinals, but ended up with familiar foe. Waimea’s 27-15 win over Renwick secured them a home semifinal and second overall, but results elsewhere saw them drawn to face Nelson Bays champions Wanderers at Jubilee Park for a spot in the decider against either Nelson or Moutere on Saturday. Waimea Old Boys’ coach Mark Milne says, while the objective was achieved, he was far from happy with the performance. “I felt we had gone backwards from where we were two or three weeks ago.” It was an accurate assessment from the coach as his team battled to combat a physical Renwick team in wet conditions. The visitors took a deserved 10-6

advantage into half time before two quick tries, the first a penalty try and then a darting finish from halfback Billy Guyton proved decisive. Waimea again lacked discipline with flanker Dan Hytongue and No 10 James Lash both spending time in the sin bin in the second half. James seemed particularly frustrated with his 10 minute spell after his brother Mike showed him a yellow card for a breakdown offence. “When we asked our boys to be more physical they did that, and to show more intent and carry the ball around the fringes more which they did, and I was pretty happy with the second half as a result.” Wanderers had a slow start to the season but have had a number of key players filter back into the squad over the past month and they may be peaking at just the right time to give Waimea Old Boys a decent run under lights on Wednesday night at 7.30pm.

SPECIALS FOR THE MONTH ARCAM - FMJ Series

The A19 and CDS27 are both part of ARCAM’s Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) product line. The name comes from the fact that the units are made of steel and aluminium. The look and feel of these ARCAM products is understated but well put together. The black chassis are certainly not flashy or drenched in knobs and lights. “Elegant” and “functional” are words that come to mind. A19 Amp
